A court in Texas, USA on Friday (August 4) issued a temporary order to support group of women and doctors who brought a lawsuit to challenge the state's abortion bans.

The ruling however, was stayed just hours later after Texas attorney general's office filed an appeal. Judge Jessica Mangrum's decision has been blocked until the lawsuit is decided on its merits in a trial slated to begin next March.

The case was filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights. It argued that the way medical exceptions are defined under Texas law is confusing. This, it said stoked fear among doctors and caused a "health crisis.

Mangrum wrote in her judgment that she agreed that the women were "delayed or denied access to abortion care because of the widespread uncertainty regarding physicians' level of discretion under the medical exception to Texas's abortion bans."

Judge Mangrum ordered that doctors can't be prosecuted for exercising their "good faith judgment."&nbsp;

She said that doctors should be allowed to decide what they thought constituted medical emergencies which would risk a woman's "life and/or health (including their fertility)," she said.&nbsp;

First Assistant Attorney General Brent Webster said in a statement that the state filed an appeal that "stays an activist Austin judge's attempt to override Texas abortion laws pending a ruling by the Texas Supreme Court."

Last month, the court in Austin, Texas heard harrowing testimony from the plaintiffs last month.

Amanda Zurawski, after whom the case is named, said she was denied an abortion despite her water breaking very early in her pregnancy, meaning a miscarriage was inevitable.&nbsp;

She said that her doctor told her that she "couldn't intervene, because the baby's heart was still beating and inducing labor would have been considered an illegal abortion."

Zurawski went into life-threatening septic shock and the fetus was stillborn.

This lawsuit is the first that was brought on behalf of women who were denied abortions since the Supreme Court in the US overturned a landmark judgment that previously guaranteed constitutional right to abortion.&nbsp;

In Texas, if a physician is found guilty of providing abortions, they may get handed up to 99-year prison sentence. In addition to this, a fine of up to USD 100,000 may be slapped and their medical license may be revoked.

A state "trigger" ban went into effect when Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, prohibiting abortions even in cases of rape or incest. Texas also has a law that allows private citizens to sue anyone who performs or aids an abortion.

A Judge has ruled that, for now, abortion pills will remain legal in the United States of Wyoming. The judge's ruling means that while a lawsuit proceeds, the state's first-in-the-nation law banning access to medical abortion medicine won't take effect on July 1st as planned. The ruling was given by Teton County Judge Melissa Owens.

This comes as Wyoming became the first US state to specifically ban abortion pills. Before this, many states have banned the medication de facto by prohibiting abortion.

<h2>Why did the judge stay the implementation of the abortion ban?</h2>

As per an AP news agency report, attorneys for Wyoming failed to show that allowing the scheduled ban would not harm the plaintiffs of a lawsuit currently in court.&nbsp;

Two nonprofit organisations, including a Casper-based abortion clinic along with four women — including two obstetricians — have sued to challenge the law banning abortion pills. They asked the judge to suspend the ban while their lawsuit plays out.

AP reports that they are also suing to stop a new, near-total ban on abortion in Wyoming state.

Judge Owens has reportedly combined the two Wyoming lawsuits against new restrictions into one case. The Judge had suspended the state's general abortion ban just days after it took effect in March of this year.

In March 2023, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed into law America's first explicit ban on abortion pills.

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, medical abortions had emerged as the predominant choice for abortion in the nation. A two-pill combination of mifepristone and another drug is as per CBS News, the most common form of abortion in the US.

In 13 US states, there are blanket bans on all forms of abortion, including abortion bills, 15 other states have limited access to medical abortions.&nbsp;

US: Wyoming judge stays state's first-in-nation ban on abortion pills

The Catholic-majority country of Malta, enforcing its strict ban on abortions, on Thursday charged a woman for having terminated a pregnancy. The woman, reportedly, had a medical abortion at home which goes against the country's complete ban on the practice.&nbsp;

Local media reports stated that she was granted a conditional discharge for three years after attending the court proceeding. No additional information was provided. However, women's rights activists have dubbed it a black day in the history of the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“What should have never happened [has] happened today: a Maltese woman was brought to court facing charges of having a medical abortion at home," the Women’s Rights Foundation of Malta said in a statement.

Although the woman was treated with respect during the hearing, the foundation said the fact that she was charged "should have never, ever happened in the first place”.

Notably, the Mediterranean nation, located off the coast of Sicily, is the only country in the 27-nation European Union bloc that does not allow women to receive an abortion, including in cases of rape or incest.

Malta: Woman accused of having abortion at home charged by court

A judge has issued a temporary halt to South Carolina's new law that bans most abortions at around six weeks of pregnancy. The Friday ruling by Judge Clifton Newman came shortly after Governor Henry McMaster signed the bill into law. As a result, South Carolina will revert back to a ban on abortions at approximately 20 weeks after fertilisation until the state Supreme Court reviews the measure.

Judge Newman stated that the status quo should be maintained until the Supreme Court has an opportunity to review the law. "It's going to end up there," he said.

The newly passed law is similar to a previous ban on abortions once a heartbeat is detected, which was passed in 2021.&nbsp;

However, the state Supreme Court in a 3-2 decision ruled that the 2021 law violated the right to privacy outlined in the state constitution.&nbsp;

As per AP, legislative leaders believe that the new law makes some technical tweaks and that these may influence at least one justice to reconsider their position, especially since the author of the previous ruling has retired.

However, abortion rights group Planned Parenthood contends that the new law is so similar to the previous one that it would harm clinics and women seeking treatment if it remains in effect until a full court review.

Planned Parenthood immediately filed a lawsuit against the new law upon its signing, arguing that it created uncertainty for South Carolina's abortion clinics, resulting in cancelled appointments for patients in the later stages of pregnancy and requiring doctors to give careful consideration to the new regulations.&nbsp;

The majority opinion in the state Supreme Court ruling that struck down the 2021 law highlighted the authority of lawmakers to protect life but ultimately recognised that the privacy clause in the state constitution grants women the time to decide whether to have an abortion.&nbsp;

It stated that most women are unaware of their pregnancy at six weeks after conception.&nbsp;

Justice Kaye Hearn, who authored the opinion, has since retired, leaving the South Carolina Supreme Court as the only high court in the country without a female justice.

The changes made in the new law specifically target Justice John Few, who was part of the majority in the previous ruling. Justice Few expressed concerns about the poorly written nature of the 2021 law and suggested that a full ban on abortion would likely be constitutional.&nbsp;

He compared a ban to child abuse or rape laws and said that it would not violate privacy rights if a fetus is granted the same rights as a person.&nbsp;

The new law includes exceptions for fatal fetal anomalies, the life and health of the patient, and cases of rape or incest within the first 12 weeks. Violating the law could result in felony charges for doctors, carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Friday's decision comes after the Justice Department filed an emergency appeal asking the Supreme Court to block the lower court rulings that would have banned or limited the use of mifepristone from 5 GMT on Saturday.&nbsp;

In its emergency filing, the Justice Department argued that the lower court orders would upend the status quo and scramble the complex regulatory regime governing mifepristone.

"That disruptive result would profoundly harm women, the nation's healthcare system, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and the public interest," the filing added.&nbsp;

The legal battle started last week when a conservative federal judge in Texas ordered a nationwide ban on mifepristone, in response to a lawsuit by an anti-abortion coalition challenging the FDA's approval of the pill in 2000. Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk adopted language used by abortion opponents, saying mifepristone was used to kill the unborn human.&nbsp;

Apart from the Justice Department, Danco Laboratories, the manufacturer of mifepristone, asked the Supreme Court in a separate filing to stay the lower courts' rulings pending an appeal, saying they risked creating "regulatory chaos across the country."

Danco Laboratories noted that a separate federal court in Washington ruled in response to a suit by 17 Democratic-ruled US states that access to mifepristone should be maintained, AFP reported.&nbsp;

Wyoming district court judge halts abortion ban days after it came into effect

Wyoming became the first US state to outlaw abortion pills after the state's Republican-controlled legislature passed a law on this earlier this month.

On Friday, Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill that made prescribing or selling abortion pills illegal.

Those violating the rule will be jailed for six months and a $9,000 fine will be imposed. The law is scheduled to take effect on July 1.

The Wyoming bill does not cover morning-after pills or treatment to protect a woman whose health or life is in danger.

It also exempts treatment of a "natural miscarriage according to currently accepted medical guidelines".

After signing the bill, Governor Gordon urged legislators to make sure that a total ban on abortion is added to the state constitution and then place&nbsp;it before voters for approval.

"I believe this question needs to be decided as soon as possible so that the issue of abortion in Wyoming can be finally resolved, and that is best done with a vote of the people," the Republican governor said in a statement.

It comes at a time when a Texas judge was considering a lawsuit that could effectively ban a common abortion pill nationwide.

It is expected that Texas judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, might order that the abortion pill be taken off the market across the country, reports AFP news agency.

Moreover, Texas legislators are also considering a proposal to ban access to websites where such pills are for sale by mail.

Wyoming only has one clinic that provides abortions - the Women's Health &amp; Family Care Clinic in Jackson.

Missouri already had some of the nation's more restrictive abortion laws and had seen a significant decline in the number of abortions performed, with residents instead travelling to clinics just across the state line in Illinois and Kansas.&nbsp;

Their lawsuit specifically highlights the Jewish teaching that a fetus becomes a living person at birth and that Jewish law prioritizes the mother's life and health.&nbsp;

A court ruling siding with the women was appealed by the Indiana attorney general's office, which is asking the state Supreme Court to consider the case.&nbsp;

In Kentucky, three Jewish women sued, claiming the state's ban violates their religious rights under the state's constitution and religious freedom law.&nbsp;

They allege that Kentucky's Republican-dominated legislature "imposed sectarian theology" by prohibiting nearly all abortions. The ban remains in effect while the Kentucky Supreme Court considers a separate case challenging the law.&nbsp;

But Banker said Missouri's lawsuit is unique because while plaintiffs in other states claimed harm, "we are saying that the whole law violates separation of church and state and we're seeking to get everything struck down."&nbsp;

Missouri Republican attorney general, Andrew Bailey, said in a statement that he will "defend the right to life with every tool at my disposal."&nbsp;

It was also found that few employees spoke to their spouses and partners about the draft opinion.&nbsp;

The report found no evidence to identify the culprit&nbsp;after examining court computer devices, networks, printers and available calls and log texts.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is allowing retail pharmacies to offer&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;pills in the United States for the first time, the agency said on Tuesday (January 3), as more states seek to ban medication&nbsp;abortion. Pharmacies can apply for certification to distribute&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;pill mifepristone with one of the two companies that make it, and if successful they will be able to dispense it directly to patients upon receiving a prescription from a certified prescriber.

The FDA had first said it would be making those changes in December 2021 when it announced it would relax risk evaluation and mitigation strategies, or REMS, on the pill, that had been in place since the agency approved it in 2000 and were lifted temporarily by the government in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, the two companies that make the drug in the United States, submitted supplemental applications that have now been approved by the FDA.

"Under the Mifepristone REMS Programme, as modified, Mifeprex and its approved generic can be dispensed by certified pharmacies or by or under the supervision of a certified prescriber," the agency said on its website on Tuesday.

Mifeprex is the brand name version of mifepristone, which in combination with a second drug called misoprostol that has various uses including miscarriage management, induces an&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy in a process known as medication&nbsp;abortion.

The regulatory change will, however, not provide equal access to all people, GenBioPro, which makes the generic version of mifepristone, said in a statement.

Abortion&nbsp;bans, some targeting mifepristone, have gone into effect in more than a dozen states since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to terminating pregnancies when it scrapped its landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling last year.

Retail pharmacies will have to weigh whether or not to offer the pill and determine where they can do so.

The so-called LIFE legislation has been reinstated barely one week after the Fulton County Superior Court declared it to be unconstitutional and invalidated it.

On November 15, Fulton county superior court judge Robert McBurney ruled that the state ban was invalid.&nbsp;

According to the verdict, the prohibition was unconstitutional since, at the time it was enacted in 2019, US supreme court precedent under Roe v. Wade and another ruling permitted abortions for pregnancies that have crossed the six-week mark.

McBurney in his ruling wrote that the Act may one day "become the law of Georgia", however that can happen "only after our legislature determines in the sharp glare of public attention that will undoubtedly and properly attend such an important and consequential debate whether the rights of unborn children justify such a restriction on women’s right to bodily autonomy and privacy."

Georgia Supreme Court reinstates six-week abortion ban, just a week after it was deemed 'unconstitutional'

Outrage built in Poland over the weekend after the ruling party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, was accused of being out of touch following his remarks made on Saturday which partly blamed the country's low birth rate on young women drinking too much alcohol.&nbsp;

“If, for example, the situation remains such that, until the age of 25, girls, young women, drink the same amount as their peers, there will be no children,” said the 73-year-old politician. He also claimed that for an average man to become an alcoholic, he would have to “drink excessively for 20 years” but “a woman only two.”

Poland: Politician blames low birthrate on young women drinking alcohol, sparks outrage

The first attempt to do a countrywide count of abortions after the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision found that in the first two months following the decision, legal abortions decreased by more than 10,000, or nearly 6%, throughout the US.

According to thorough calculations done by a group of academics and abortion providers, legal abortions in 13 states—mostly in the South—banned or severely limited abortion during those months, with the number of abortions performed there falling to almost zero.

The accuser called Walker "a hypocrite" unfit to be a US senator, even as the high-profile GOP candidate seeks to unseat the Democratic incumbent in Georgia in the mid-term elections next month. 
 
The ex-NFL star, who had denied an earlier accusation also, called the latest one "foolishness". 
 
Walker, who is being strongly backed by former US president Donald Trump, is contesting against Democrat Raphael Warnock in November's mid-term race.

The fresh allegations came to the fore when the second woman, who spoke anonymously over Zoom to reporters, said that Walker pressured her into ending her pregnancy. She also did not appear on camera during the virtual news conference in Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Both women have not revealed their identity publicly.&nbsp;The second woman, named only as "Jane Doe" by her lawyer, told reporters on Wednesday that she had a six-year-long relationship with Walker and that he had driven her to a clinic, reported CBS News. 
 
"He has publicly taken the position that he is about life and against abortion under any circumstance, when in fact he pressured me to have an abortion and personally ensured that it occurred by driving me to the clinic and paying for it," she told reporters. 
 
The woman’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, cited exhibits including alleged love letters, a 1992 voicemail and a hotel receipt that she said proved the two had a relationship in the late 1980s and 1990s.&nbsp;

Speaking at a campaign event in Dillard, Georgia, just before the news conference, Walker, who has taken a strong anti-abortion stance, called the latest accusation a "lie". 
 
"I'm done with this foolishness. I already told people this is a lie, and I'm not going to entertain, continue, to carry a lie along," he said.&nbsp; 
"And I also want to let you know that I didn't kill JFK either," he joked while accusing the Democrats of playing dirty tricks against him ahead of polls. 
 
The new accuser claims that she is an independent voter who supported Donald Trump, and said she became pregnant in 1993 by Walker while he was playing for the Dallas Cowboys. 
 
She said Walker "encouraged" and gave her money for the abortion, but after she became emotional on her first visit to the clinic and left without the procedure, he returned with her the next day and "waited for hours in the parking lot until I came out". 
 
"I was devastated because I felt like I was pressured into having the abortion," she said. 
 
Walker had earlier this month denied similar accusations from another anonymous woman who claimed that he had pressured her and paid for her to get an abortion in 2009.

Interestingly, Walker is challenging the incumbent, Warnock, a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta who supports abortion. The close contest could determine which party controls the US Senate after next month's elections. 
 
In a statement on Wednesday, Warnock campaign spokeswoman Rachel Petri said: "Today's new report is just the latest example of a troubling pattern we have seen play out again and again and again." 
 
Warnock has also been assailed over reports of church evicting low-income tenants from the apartments it owns, and for running over his ex-wife's foot in a car during a domestic dispute.

Near-total abortion ban approved in West Virginia

On Tuesday (September 13), Lindsey Graham, a well-known Republican senator, unveiled a bill that would outlaw abortion after 15 weeks in all 50 US states.&nbsp;

The bill has been heavily criticised by the White House and lawmakers and has very little chance of passing in the Democratic-held Senate.

White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre, referring to the bill, said it "strip away women's rights in all 50 states" and will be "wildly out of step with what Americans believe," AFP reported.

Abortion has been an eventful debate topic ever since the US Supreme Court scrapped&nbsp;the constitutional right to the procedure in June this year, leaving it up to individual states to decide whether to permit it or not.&nbsp;

A country-wide ban would be imposed on abortion after 15 weeks would be imposed as per Graham's proposed bill, with the exception of rape, incest, and situations when the mother's life is in danger.&nbsp;

One of the congressmen who supported the original six-week ban is very troubled by the news that South Carolina is exploring a new, nearly absolute abortion ban.

Now that the consequences of the abortion ban are coming to light, State representative Neal Collins as per Jezebel regrets voting for it.&nbsp;

The law came into effect in June but was temporarily blocked on August 17.

A video is now going viral on social media, and in it, Collins appears to be fighting back tears.

Apparently, just two weeks after the law came into effect Collins was contacted by a doctor regarding a 19-year-old who was receiving treatment at a nearby emergency room.

When the pregnant teen's water broke at 15 weeks, she went to the emergency department. However, due to the six-week limit, doctors were unable to perform a dilation and evacuation surgery, which could have spared her a great deal of pain and potential infections.

"The attorneys told the doctors that because of the fetal heartbeat bill, because that 15-week-old had a heartbeat, the doctors could not extract [the fetus]. So their only choices were to admit the 19-year-old until that fetal heartbeat stopped" or discharge her.

The doctor told Collins that the heartbeat could've continued, for "seconds, minutes, hours, maybe days."

"What we do matters," said Collins, appearing to hold back tears.

The 19-year-old was eventually discharged by the doctors, to deal with the loss "on her own"&nbsp;even as she faced a 50 per cent risk of losing her uterus. She also had a 10 per cent chance of developing sepsis and dying.

“That weighs on me. I voted for that bill. These are affecting people,” Collins added. “That whole week I did not sleep.”

Davis has retained an attorney as she becomes the most recent personification of the agonising choices some women are facing in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to abolish universal access to abortion in June. With very few exceptions, most states have prohibited abortion, including Davis’s native state.

Davis, after a 10-week scan, revealed that the foetus was missing the top of its skull, acrania, a condition which generally kills within minutes or hours of delivery. Davis admitted publicly aborting her child. The hospital treating Davis refused to end her pregnancy as acrania was not listed on Louisiana’s list of ailments requiring an exception for abortion.

He also claimed that it caused emotional and physical damage to his client and other women in Davis’s position. Following a request from attorneys for Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and hours after the August 1 appeals court ruling, Oakland County Judge Jacob Cunningham issued a restraining order against the county prosecutors, as reported by CBS news.&nbsp;

Republicans in Kent, Jackson, and Macomb counties have stated that they should be authorised to enforce the 1931 legislation, despite the fact that the majority of prosecutors in counties with abortion facilities have said they will not enforce the prohibition.

Before issuing the preliminary injunction, Cunningham heard to arguments Wednesday and Thursday in Pontiac. This is intended to make abortion lawful throughout the state until the Michigan Supreme Court or voters may decide in the autumn.

"We can't expect doctors to read the minds of a prosecutor and to try to figure out what a prosecutor thinks that life saving exception means. That is precisely what would happen if the preliminary injunction is not issued," Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said during closing arguments Thursday.

In closing remarks, David Kallman, a lawyer for two Republican county prosecutors, argued that granting a preliminary injunction isn't the best way to amend the law.

"It's the right of all the people of the state of Michigan to weigh in and vote or go through their representatives and do it through the proper legislative and elected process to change a law," Kallman said.

The future of abortion access in Michigan is anticipated to be determined by a ballot measure that collected 753,759 valid signatures in July and sought to incorporate abortion rights into the state constitution. The state's Board of Canvassers must still give the amendment its final approval before it can appear on the ballot in November.

Because Whitmer and Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel have made abortion rights a key part of their reelection campaigns, the state's abortion laws are expected to have a significant impact on the general election in Michigan in November.

Two months after the United States took away women's right to safe abortion, now a case involving a Florida teen is sparking anger.&nbsp;

The unidentified 16-year-old girl had approached the court seeking abortion on the grounds that she was still in school and "not ready to have a baby", reports AFP. &nbsp;

However, upholding an&nbsp;earlier ruling by a lower court, an&nbsp;appeals court in Florida denied&nbsp;an abortion to the teen, saying she isn't "sufficiently mature" enough to terminate her "baby".

In the state of Florida, a minor seeking an abortion must obtain consent from at least one parent. However, as per court documents, the girl is "parentless" and lives with a relative and court-appointed guardian.

The lower court had denied her request for a waiver of that rule as it deemed that she "not established by clear and convincing evidence that she was sufficiently mature to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy."

The appeal court's ruling upholding the lower court's decision has&nbsp;infuriated US legislators, many of whom took to Twitter to voice their criticism.
