In a bid to bolster its defence capabilities, Argentina's Defense Minister, Jorge Enrique Taiana, is in talks with India for potential acquisition of Tejas fighter jets. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Minister Taiana revealed that Argentinian pilots have evaluated Tejas but pointed out hurdles over the presence of British parts. He said, "One issue is, for example, that the aircraft doesn't have not one piece of British part because the British don't sell it to Argentina. So, in the case of Tejas, it has 16 parts from the UK. So, the company has to change and replace the parts.". The minister is in India for a 4-day visit and held talks with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday to expand the defence cooperation and Defence Industrial partnership. He also visited BrahMos Aerospace and will also travel to Bengaluru to visit the facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). Asked if his country will be keen to buy BrahMos missiles, he said," I believe that there is a chance of that..". He also spoke on other topics like India's G20 presidency, expansion of BRICS to include his country.

The report, titled 'National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023', reveals that an unprecedented 13.5 crore people moved out of multidimensional poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21. This achievement places India well ahead of its 2030 target for reducing poverty under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</p>

<p>The NITI Aayog's second edition of the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is based on data from the latest National Family Health Survey [NFHS-5 (2019-21)], comparing progress between the surveys NFHS-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21). The MPI measures deprivations across three equally weighted dimensions: health, education, and standard of living, represented by 12 indicators aligned with the SDGs.</p>

<p>Notably, India has witnessed a significant decline of 9.89 percentage points in the number of multidimensionally poor individuals, reducing from 24.85 per cent in 2015-16 to 14.96 per cent in 2019-21. The rural areas have shown the fastest decline, with poverty decreasing from 32.59 per cent to 19.28 per cent, while urban areas experienced a reduction from 8.65 per cent to 5.27 per cent. Uttar Pradesh, in particular, stands out, with 3.43 crore people successfully escaping multidimensional poverty during this period. States like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan also demonstrated substantial progress in reducing poverty rates.</p>

<p>The report highlights that the MPI value has nearly halved from 0.117 to 0.066 between 2015-16 and 2019-21, and the intensity of poverty has declined from 47 per cent to 44 per cent, signaling India's significant progress towards achieving SDG Target 1.2 well before the 2030 deadline.</p>

<p>The success in combating multidimensional poverty can be attributed to the government's strategic focus on ensuring sustainable and equitable development while eradicating poverty. Various flagship programs have played a crucial role in this achievement. Initiatives such as the Poshan Abhiyan and Anaemia Mukt Bharat have contributed to improved health indicators. At the same time, the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) have resulted in enhanced sanitation and access to clean drinking water.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which provides subsidized cooking fuel, has transformed lives with a 14.6 percentage point improvement in cooking fuel deprivations. The Saubhagya, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), and Samagra Shiksha programs have also played instrumental roles in reducing multidimensional poverty across the country.</p>

<h2><strong>A threatening phone call</strong></h2>

<p>The news agency PTI quoted an official as saying that the traffic control room of Mumbai Police received a call from an unidentified person, who apparently warned of a 26/11-like terror attack if the Pakistani woman Seema Haider did not return to her country. The official said that the call was received on July 12.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police official also said that the caller spoke in chaste Urdu and said that there would be a terror attack, like the Mumbai attacks&nbsp;in November 2008, when 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai, killing at least 166 people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police official said that the threat call is being probed by Mumbai Police and a crime branch team has also been roped in for the investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah received Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and party leader, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav at the venue of the Opposition dinner meeting in Bengaluru.</p>

<p>The meeting, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, is currently underway at Taj West End Hotel in Bengaluru.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, it will commence at about 11 am and will continue till 4 pm.</p>

<p>Congress has mustered support from 26 parties for the second opposition unity meeting to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The first opposition unity meeting was held in Patna last month.</p>

<h2><strong>Siddaramaiah slams BJP</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier in the day, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of the country, the economic condition of the country deteriorated.</p>

<p>While talking to reporters, he said, "BJP is the party which destroyed the economy of the country, not Opposition parties. After Narendra Modi became PM, the economic condition of the country was destroyed, prices were raised, farmers poor are in distressed condition and because of communal issues people are living in scary situations."</p>

<p>"BJP and PM Modi will not get a mandate this time, they will lose this time," he said.</p>

<p>He also claimed that the influence of PM Narendra Modi is weakening and that the decline of the BJP has begun in Karnataka.</p>

<p>"Didn't we defeat Modi in Karnataka, BJP's loss in all the places, where Modi campaigned? During the Karnataka assembly elections, PM Narendra Modi visited the state 28 times. The decline of the BJP has begun in Karnataka. We'll win the majority of seats in Lok Sabha 2024 polls, and BJP and NDA alliance parties will lose."</p>

Till now opposition have not shown any leader, no determination, no power to take decisions, no program, when it is done then we will talk."</p>

<p>"We never contest elections on other's weaknesses. Our ideology is based on the fact that if we find any trouble, we find our weakness and we try to win on our strength," he added.</p>

This is the second time the Opposition parties are meeting before the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, in order to draft a roadmap to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The meeting, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, is currently underway at Taj West End Hotel in Bengaluru. On Tuesday, it will commence at about 11 am and will continue till 4 pm. Congress has mustered support from 26 parties for the second opposition unity meeting to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The first opposition unity meeting was held in Patna last month. <p>According to the aforementioned official readout, the 105 artefacts represent a wide geographical spread in terms of their origin in India: 47 of these are from eastern India, 27 from Southern India, 22 from Centra India, 6 from Northern India and 3 from Western India.</p>

<p>"Spanning a period from 2nd-3rd century CE to 18-19th century CE, the artefacts are made of terracotta, stone, metal and wood. Around 50 artefacts relate to religious subjects (Hinduism, Jainism and Islam) and the rest are of cultural significance," the readout added.</p>
