Notably, Foxconn already operates a 40,000-person iPhone manufacturing in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

In August this year, the Karnataka government said that Foxconn intends&nbsp;to invest $600 million in two projects to produce chip-making machinery and iPhone case components.

Earlier this month, Young Liu, Chairman and CEO of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) said that India will play a significant role in manufacturing in the future.

A PTI report quoted him as saying it took China 30 years to build the entire supply chain ecosystem but&nbsp;it will take an "appropriate amount of time in India". He added the process will be shorter in Asia's third-largest economy.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the South Asian nation will be able to purchase the India-made iPhone 15 on the day that it goes on sale globally, according to previous reports by Bloomberg.

According to experts, muted wholesale inflation may prevent nominal GDP growth from exceeding the 10.5 per cent Union Budget target for this fiscal year.

The Economic Times cited Gaura Sengupta, an economist from IDFC First Bank, who indicated that their projection for nominal GDP growth in FY24 is tracking around 9 per cent with a downside risk. Compared to 9.6 per cent the year before, she forecast wholesale inflation to average at 0.2 per cent for this fiscal year.

As per the data released last week, the wholesale price index (WPI), which makes up 70 per cent of the GDP deflator used to compute nominal GDP, experienced deflation for the fifth consecutive month in August.

Compared to a 1.36 per cent deflation in July, WPI-based inflation dropped by 0.52 per cent in August.

As the base effects diminish, experts claim that WPI will start to trend upward starting in September, but they predict that inflation will remain low for the remainder of the fiscal year.

A rating company called CareEdge expects wholesale inflation to be between 1 per cent and 2 per cent in FY24.

Sengupta stated that tax receipts are showing the effects of the muted nominal growth.

“The impact of the slowdown in nominal GDP growth is already visible with gross tax collection growth slowing to 2.8 per cent YoY in FYTD24 (Financial Year-to-Date) (Apr to Jul), with a decline in corporate tax collections and a slowdown in income tax growth. Even GST tax collections where compliance is improving, a slowdown is seen in nominal growth rates to 11 per cent in FYTD24 (Apr to Aug) from 33 per cent in FYTD23,” The Economic Times quoted Sengupta as saying.

Others claim that low or negative wholesale price increases may prevent that, notwithstanding Sengupta's optimism that the government will be able to achieve its 5.9 per cent fiscal deficit objective with moderate expenditures.

According to Bank of Baroda chief economist Madan Sabnavis, deficit ratios might increase by as much as 0.2 percentage points if nominal growth approaches the real growth rate of 6.5 per cent.

Real GDP growth in the first quarter of FY24 was 7.8 per cent, while nominal GDP growth was just slightly higher at 8 per cent.

The delay in reaching the goal of a $5 trillion economy, according to Sabnavis, is another obstacle.

"This (6.5 per cent nominal growth) will push forward the year when we can hope to touch the $5-trillion mark," The Economic Times quoted Sabnavis as saying.

By 2026–2027, India is expected to surpass Japan as the third-largest economy in the world, according to the IMF, when its economy will reach $5 trillion.

In FY24, Sabnavis projects a nominal GDP growth rate of 8–9 per cent.

"Transgender individuals were facing numerous difficulties in accessing our hospital's services. I spoke to some transgender groups and found that they feel stigmatised. They feel uncomfortable in availing medical care along with other people in public spaces," Dr Shukla said.

"Their numbers in the hospital were negligible, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination. Hence, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, we have initiated this special OPD dedicated to their healthcare needs," he added.

"Government hospitals need to be accessible for every section of society and this is the motivation behind opening a separate OPD to provide healthcare services for the transgenders," Dr Shukla said.

In this story, we trace the journey of India’s flag carrier that started out with a transporter of mail to India’s national carrier owned by the Indian government to how it was privatised and taken over by the TATA Group.

From a Transporter of Mail to a Transporter of Passengers

Air India's remarkable journey from being a mail carrier to a global passenger airline is a testament to the vision and determination of its founder, JRD Tata. It all began in 1932 when Tata Air Services was founded. Initially focused on transporting mail for Imperial Airways, the airline quickly expanded its operations to include passenger services. Within its first year, Tata Air Services had not only transported 10.7 tons of mail but had also carried 155 passengers, showcasing its efficiency and punctuality.

In 1938, the airline was renamed Tata Airlines and took its first step into international aviation by adding Colombo, Sri Lanka, to its route map. The profits grew tenfold by 1937, underscoring its success. However, World War II temporarily halted civilian aviation as Tata Airlines' planes were repurposed for military use.

Post-independence, the Indian government acquired a 49 per cent&nbsp;stake in the airline, which was then rebranded as Air India. In 1948, Air India made its historic inaugural long-haul flight from Mumbai to London Heathrow, marking a significant milestone in its transformation into a global airline.

From TATA Airlines to Air India

The evolution from Tata Airlines to Air India was a pivotal moment in the airline's history. Despite the government's nationalization of Air India in the 1950s, JRD Tata returned as its chairman to ensure that the airline's high standards were maintained. His commitment to excellence and dedication to Indian aviation was unwavering.

Air India continued its modernisation and expansion efforts, acquiring cutting-edge aircraft like the Boeing 707 in 1960 and the Boeing 747 in 1971. These acquisitions marked the beginning of a new era, enabling Air India to serve long-haul destinations with unparalleled comfort and efficiency. The airline expanded its global footprint, adding destinations across Europe and Asia, becoming a familiar sight in airports around the world.

Merger with domestic carrier – Indian Airlines

The merger of Air India with Indian Airlines in 2007 was a significant development in the history of Indian aviation. It aimed to consolidate both carriers under the Air India brand, streamlining their operations and creating a more competitive and efficient entity. Flawed aircraft configurations, the inability to offer direct flights, and the failed merger with Indian Airlines compounded its challenges. Labour unions secured extravagant salaries, diminishing cost competitiveness, while poor adaptability in a liberalised economy and leadership changes further aggravated the problems.

TATA’s takeover

The Tata Group finally assumed control of Air India in January 2022, embarking on a mission to revive the struggling carrier. This transition marked a significant shift in the airline's ownership.

The arrival of the new logo which features a contemporary design in the colours of gold, red, and purple; replacing the former red and saffron, and speculations about Air India’s famous mascot, the Maharajah retiring, sets the tone for a drastic change that the airline is about to witness in the coming years. Just like the country it serves, Air India has had a rich history which has changed quite a lot over time. In this story, we trace the journey of India’s flag carrier that started out with a transporter of mail to India’s national carrier owned by the Indian government to how it was privatised and taken over by the TATA Group. From a Transporter of Mail to a Transporter of Passengers Air India's remarkable journey from being a mail carrier to a global passenger airline is a testament to the vision and determination of its founder, JRD Tata. It all began in 1932 when Tata Air Services was founded. Initially focused on transporting mail for Imperial Airways, the airline quickly expanded its operations to include passenger services. Within its first year, Tata Air Services had not only transported 10.7 tons of mail but had also carried 155 passengers, showcasing its efficiency and punctuality. In 1938, the airline was renamed Tata Airlines and took its first step into international aviation by adding Colombo, Sri Lanka, to its route map. The profits grew tenfold by 1937, underscoring its success. However, World War II temporarily halted civilian aviation as Tata Airlines' planes were repurposed for military use. Post-independence, the Indian government acquired a 49 per cent stake in the airline, which was then rebranded as Air India. In 1948, Air India made its historic inaugural long-haul flight from Mumbai to London Heathrow, marking a significant milestone in its transformation into a global airline. From TATA Airlines to Air India The evolution from Tata Airlines to Air India was a pivotal moment in the airline's history. Despite the government's nationalization of Air India in the 1950s, JRD Tata returned as its chairman to ensure that the airline's high standards were maintained. His commitment to excellence and dedication to Indian aviation was unwavering. Air India continued its modernisation and expansion efforts, acquiring cutting-edge aircraft like the Boeing 707 in 1960 and the Boeing 747 in 1971. These acquisitions marked the beginning of a new era, enabling Air India to serve long-haul destinations with unparalleled comfort and efficiency. The airline expanded its global footprint, adding destinations across Europe and Asia, becoming a familiar sight in airports around the world. However, in 1977, JRD Tata was removed as chairman, and Air India came under government control, marking a significant shift in its management and operations. Merger with domestic carrier – Indian Airlines The merger of Air India with Indian Airlines in 2007 was a significant development in the history of Indian aviation. It aimed to consolidate both carriers under the Air India brand, streamlining their operations and creating a more competitive and efficient entity. The merger brought together two distinct facets of Indian aviation—Air India's international operations and Indian Airlines' domestic network. While the merger held promise, challenges soon emerged. The aviation landscape in India was changing rapidly with the emergence of new private carriers like Jet Airways. Despite Air India's historical successes, it faced growing competition and financial difficulties. The merged entity struggled to overcome these challenges, leading to a complex financial situation that persisted for almost two decades. Mounting debt Air India, once India's aviation pride, faced a crippling debt burden of Rs 61,000 crore. However, the government retained a portion of the debt, leaving Air India's finances in dire straits with just Rs 2,750 crore in cash. The airline's financial crisis stemmed from a series of missteps, including an ill-advised order of 111 Boeing aircraft driven by political considerations, leading to equity erosion. Flawed aircraft configurations, the inability to offer direct flights, and the failed merger with Indian Airlines compounded its challenges. Labour unions secured extravagant salaries, diminishing cost competitiveness, while poor adaptability in a liberalised economy and leadership changes further aggravated the problems. TATA’s takeover The Tata Group finally assumed control of Air India in January 2022, embarking on a mission to revive the struggling carrier. As mentioned above, the day commemorates the birth of the Hindu god Ganesh. Devotees on this day bring clay idols of the god to their homes while others display them at extravagant pandals (temporary stages).&nbsp;

The observance of this day includes chanting Vedic hymns, and Hindu texts, offering prasada from the daily prayers such as modaka.&nbsp;

Although the day when Ganesh&nbsp;Chaturthi was first observed is unknown, it has been publicly celebrated in Pune since the time of King Shivaji.&nbsp;

On the same day, the Chaurchan festival is also celebrated in the Mithila region of Bihar, related to Ganesh&nbsp;and the moon god Chandra.
