Gujarat Director General of Police Vikas Sahay on Monday refuted reports that a two-year-old boy on board the Nicaragua-bound flight that was sent back to India from France had gone missing.

The Nicaragua-bound aircraft, an Airbus A340, carrying 276 passengers, was grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking. It landed in Mumbai in the early hours on December 26.

"The news report (claiming the child is untraceable) is incorrect. Our officers checked the records of passengers and found out the boy had already returned home with his parents," said Sahay.

As per news reports that appeared during the day, the two-year-old boy was not accompanied by anyone during the flight and had gone untraceable.

Some 60 passengers are from Gujarat and many of them have been questioned by the CID-Crime in a bid to unearth a suspected illegal immigration network operating from the state, officials had said earlier.

They are being questioned to find out whether they had any plans to cross into the USA illegally after reaching Latin America, officials had said some days ago.

Further investigations revealed the call's origin from a mobile phone, allowing for immediate location tracing, he added.

The individual is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment, as per the official.

Responding promptly, the police conducted searches at various key public places and installations across the city. Fortunately, no explosive devices or suspicious items were discovered.

In a related incident on December 27, the Jaipur airport authorities received a threatening email, claiming an intent to blow up the airport.

Terminal manager Anurag Gupta subsequently complained to the Jaipur Airport police station.

Following the receipt of the threat email, the airport authority alerted the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) and other security officials, leading to a thorough search operation at the airport.

Some Pakistan watchers believe that his premiership is "not a done deal" but most experts interpret his return from exile, dropping of cases against him, and his growing proximity to the Army leadership as evidence that he will wear the crown of thorns once again.&nbsp;

Assuming this scenario comes through, the likely equation between Pakistan and India through 2024 will be of wider interest. Perceptions differ.

A former Indian high commissioner believes that Sharif’s return to power and Narendra Modi’s expected victory in elections in India may open the doors for a limited rapprochement. Others are sceptical, citing divergences on the Kashmir issue, the hawkish attitude of the Army Chief, and New Delhi’s firm policy against&nbsp;Pakistan’s continued adherence to cross-border terrorism as an instrument of policy.&nbsp;

Yet, it is committed to profiting from China's largesse and remains prone to Beijing’s strategy to sow seeds of dissension in Nepal-India ties.

Bhutan, enjoying unique and close relations with India, has triggered new concerns, of late. These emanate from reports about progress in border delimitation discussions between Bhutan and China, and China's keen interest in establishing diplomatic relations with Bhutan.

Doklam situated at the trijunction boundary of India, Bhutan, and China remains a big question mark, given the absence of dialogue among the three concerned parties. However, a major positive development was the visit of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to India in November 2023. New Delhi conveyed “full support to the socio-economic development in Bhutan,” including the plan for a smart city at Gelephu and its road connectivity with Kokrajhar (Assam). Further developments will be worth watching.&nbsp;

<h2>In the South and East&nbsp;</h2>

Sri Lanka showed signs of a slow but steady recovery from the economic crisis it has faced since May 2022. The nearly $4 billion assistance from India made a significant difference.

"If we are stable today," President Ranil Wickremesinghe told the visiting Indian finance minister last November, "it is because of the assistance." New Delhi’s collaboration with Colombo on debt management continues unabated. So do its endeavours to enhance cooperation in connectivity, infrastructure development, energy, trade, and investment.

Maldives hogged much attention following the election of Mohamed Muizzu as the president in September 2023. His election showed a swing from his predecessor’s pro-India policy orientation to the ‘India Out’ campaign. Three measures taken by the new government – request to India to withdraw its military personnel, refusal to renew the MoU on the joint hydrographic survey, and Maldives’ absence from the latest Colombo Security Conclave meeting in Mauritius – caused much disquiet in New Delhi. But the meeting between PM Modi and President Muizzu on the sidelines of COP28 seemed a good beginning. The early months of 2024 will witness a calibrated Indian response. A series of high-level discussions may be on the cards.

India's anti-terror agency declared a significant breakthrough in identifying 43 Khalistan supporters linked to acts of vandalism against Indian high commissions in the UK, US, and Canada. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) attributed its success to an innovative approach to crowd-sourcing information.

In its comprehensive year-end review for 2023, the agency said it conducted more than 50 raids and searches.

It examined 80 individuals in India suspected of involvement in the conspiracy behind overseas attacks on Indian interests. In total, more than 1,000 raids were conducted.

As part of its achievements in 2023, the NIA boasted a remarkable conviction rate of 94.7 per cent.&nbsp;

With 625 arrests and the attachment of 240 assets valued at approximately ₹56 crore (about $7 million), the NIA&nbsp;continued to combat&nbsp;acts of terrorism, gang activities, drug smuggling, human trafficking and other criminal operations that pose threats to India's national interests.

The NIA's operations saw a 28 per cent rise in arrests, reaching 625 compared to 490 in the previous year, said the annual review.&nbsp;

On terrorism, while 65 accused were arrested this year for links to Islamic State,&nbsp;114 were arrested for jihadi terror cases, 45 in human trafficking cases, 28 for terrorist and organised criminal activity, and 76 in Left-wing Extremism-related (LWE) cases.

The number of people chargesheeted and convicted in NIA cases stood at 513 and 74 respectively, as against 459 and 79 in 2022.

The NIA managed to track down and arrest 47 accused in 2023, 14 more than last year.

Also, arrests were made upon deportation and extradition, including those of Amritpal Singh alias Ammy, Amrik Singh, Manpreet Singh alias Peeta, and Mandeep Singh who was deported from the Philippines. Most of these are Khalistan supporters.

Vikram Brar, a Punjabi gangster,&nbsp;was arrested upon deportation from the United Arab Emirates.

India's anti-terror agency declared a significant breakthrough in identifying 43 Khalistan supporters linked to acts of vandalism against Indian high commissions in the UK, US, and Canada. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) attributed its success to an innovative approach to crowd-sourcing information. In its comprehensive year-end review for 2023, the agency said it conducted more than 50 raids and searches. It examined 80 individuals in India suspected of involvement in the conspiracy behind overseas attacks on Indian interests. In total, more than 1,000 raids were conducted. As part of its achievements in 2023, the NIA boasted a remarkable conviction rate of 94.7 per cent. With 625 arrests and the attachment of 240 assets valued at approximately ₹56 crore (about $7 million), the NIA continued to combat acts of terrorism, gang activities, drug smuggling, human trafficking and other criminal operations that pose threats to India's national interests. On terrorism, while 65 accused were arrested this year for links to Islamic State, 114 were arrested for jihadi terror cases, 45 in human trafficking cases, 28 for terrorist and organised criminal activity, and 76 in Left-wing Extremism-related (LWE) cases. The number of people chargesheeted and convicted in NIA cases stood at 513 and 74 respectively, as against 459 and 79 in 2022. The NIA managed to track down and arrest 47 accused in 2023, 14 more than last year. Also, arrests were made upon deportation and extradition, including those of Amritpal Singh alias Ammy, Amrik Singh, Manpreet Singh alias Peeta, and Mandeep Singh who was deported from the Philippines. Most of these are Khalistan supporters. Vikram Brar, a Punjabi gangster, was arrested upon deportation from the United Arab Emirates. What does it mean? The NIA report shows a considerable escalation in investigations throughout 2023. The focus on investigations of attacks on Indian missions in the United States and Canada shows the way the corresponding diplomatic showdown between India and these countries, especially in the second half of 2023.

Both countries exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen every year on the 1st of January and 1st of July through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad as per the agreement.

"Pakistan has been requested to ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Indian and believed-to-be Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India," stated the MEA.

India reciprocated by sharing lists of 337 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, identified as Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan provided lists of 47 civilian prisoners and 184 fishermen in its custody, presumed to be Indian.

"The Government of India has called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel, and fishermen along with their boats, from Pakistan's custody," the statement emphasized.

The MEA highlighted successful efforts, mentioning that 2,639 Indian fishermen and 67 Indian civilian prisoners have been repatriated from Pakistan since 2014. This includes 478 Indian fishermen and 9 Indian civilian prisoners repatriated from Pakistan in 2023.

"India remains committed to addressing, on priority, all humanitarian matters, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other's country", according to the MEA statement. New Delhi urged Islamabad to confirm the nationality status of 65 believed-to-be Pakistani prisoners, including fishermen, whose repatriation is pending due to a lack of confirmation from Pakistan.

Both countries also exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities, marking the 33rd consecutive annual occurrence under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities signed on December 31, 1988. The diplomatic exchange, mandated by the agreement entered into force on January 27, 1991, involves informing each other of covered installations on the first of January each year.

In 2023, India witnessed the emergence of 54 new space startups, thereby taking the total number of fledgling firms in the sector to 204. Until the space sector reforms, the private firms and startups remained as mere suppliers of components to the Indian Space Research Organisation. Reforms enabled private firms and startups to seek the government's support to carry out a wide range of space activities, with approvals from the sectoral regulator, the government-run IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre).

Outlining the highlights of the year, ISPA emphasised the announcement of the New Space Policy 2023, by the Indian government.&nbsp;

Hyderabad-based Launch vehicle firm&nbsp;Skyroot Aerospace inaugurated India’s largest private integrated rocket development facility under a single roof. It also unveiled Vikram-1, a multi-stage launch vehicle that stands seven stories tall, with a payload capacity of approximately 300 kg and the ability to deploy satellites into lower earth orbit (LEO).

Chennai-based rocket firm Agnikul Cosmos&nbsp;Agnikul announced the completion of ground tests and unveiled their rocket, at their private launch facility within the ISRO spaceport at Sriharikota.&nbsp;
