India's schedule at Paris Paralympics, Day 2: Here is everything you need to know

World number one Scottie Scheffler swiftly put himself in a commanding position at the Tour Championship, the finale to the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, with his 6-under 65 giving him a seven shot lead. Under the format for the playoff final, designed to reward players for their position in the FedEx Cup standings, Scheffler started the day at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, on 10-under, combining with his opening round to place him at the top of the leaderboard on 16-under.

His closest challengers are Collin Morikawa, who shot a 5-under 66 to move to 9-under, and Xander Schauffele, who started on eight-under and shot a one-under 70. The Masters champion Scheffler let his advantage slip by a shot on the first hole, where he made a bogey on the par-4 hole, but that was the only blemish on his scorecard.

The American caught fire on the back nine, where he made five of his seven birdies, including three in a row from the 12th hole onwards. "I'm trying not to think much about the starting strokes stuff," said Scheffler. "I think it's still a bit weird with it not being a traditional event. But it was nice to get off to a good start in the first round, and I feel like I did a lot of things well today," he said.

During the previous two years, Scheffler had come into this tournament with a lead, but had been unable to close out and clinch the Cup -- but he said he is now trying to play the event as if it was a regular 72-hole competition.

"Just like any other tournament, if I came out here and shot 2-over par and this was a regular stroke play event, I'd be sitting pretty far back from the lead," he said. "So treating it like I would any other tournament, just staying in my lane and doing the things I'm good at, and that's just trying to focus on the task at hand and let all the other stuff take care of itself," he said.

Scheffler had said before the tournament that the key at East Lake was to keep the ball on the fairways, given the rough would make it tough to control the ball into the firm, new greens.

That point was proven by Schauffele, the PGA Championship and British Open winner this year, who made four bogeys and just one birdie mainly due to his wayward driving.

"Kind of hit it in the rough a lot, and with brand new greens, I think I scored okay actually for how bad I hit it. But yeah, overall it was kind of a 'meh' day. Wasn't something to be proud of or disgusted by," he said. "Scottie was almost in every fairway it looked like. It looked like he was going through wedge practice while he was out there. If you're in the fairway you can attack this golf course," added Schauffele.

If anyone is going to push Scheffler to the wire, the evidence of the opening round suggested it could be Morikawa, who made six straight birdies from the 10th hole onwards, having reached the turn one-over for his round.

"I'm going to use that back nine to hopefully push myself the next three days," he said. "After nine I told myself to start only thinking about my shot and not worrying about if the ball is going to be perfect or not. "(My) game is good enough to come out here and win. I've just got to get out of my own head," he said.

Five players in the 30-man field found themselves tied fourth at 8-under, eight shots behind Scheffler. The most impressive of that quintet was Australian Adam Scott, who continued his recent run of good form with a bogey-free 5-under 66.

For all the pre-tournament talk of how tough the course might be, only one player shot over-par for the round: American Billy Horschel, who made 73.

Also read: US Open 2024: Jannik Sinner on course for semifinal duel with Carlos Alcaraz, Naomi Osaka crashes out "Just like any other tournament, if I came out here and shot 2-over par and this was a regular stroke play event, I'd be sitting pretty far back from the lead," he said.

India's schedule at Paris Paralympics, Day 1: Here's all you need to know

The 2024 Paralympics opened in Paris on Wednesday in a colourful and hope-filled ceremony, starting 11 days of competition in a city still riding the wave of the successful Olympics. French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Games open during a ceremony in a balmy Place de la Concorde in central Paris -- the first time a Paralympic opening ceremony has taken place away from the main stadium.

The 4,400 competitors from 168 delegations paraded into the arena as the sun set with host nation France entering last to a standing ovation from 30,000 spectators packed into the stands around the historic square. The fine weather was in sharp contrast to the heavy rain which fell throughout the Olympics opening ceremony on July 26.

In one of the highlights of the ceremony, French singer Lucky Love, who is missing his left arm below the elbow, performed a moving rendition of his song "My Ability" surrounded by both able-bodied and disabled dancers. International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president Andrew Parsons then told the athletes and spectators he hoped for an "inclusion revolution", before Macron officially declared the Games open.

The Paralympic flag was carried into the square by John McFall, a British Paralympic sprinter who has been selected by the European Space Agency to become the first 'parastronaut'.

French Olympian Florent Manaudou brought the flame into the arena, as the four-day torch relay reached its culmination with five French Paralympians, including 2020 gold medallists Alexis Hanquinquant and Nantenin Keita, eventually lighting the already-iconic cauldron in the Tuileries Gardens.

A total of 18 of the 35 Olympic venues will also be used for the Paralympics, which run until September 8, including the ornate Grand Palais and the Stade de France. Ticket sales have sped up since the Olympics and organisers say more than two million of the 2.5 million available have been sold, with several venues sold out.

- Ukraine send strong team -

Riding the wave of its Olympic team's success, host nation France is aiming for a substantial improvement on the 11 golds it won in 2021, which left it 14th in the medals table. Paralympic powerhouse China dominated the last Paralympics in Tokyo with 96 golds and has again sent a strong delegation.

Ukraine, traditionally one of the top medal-winning nations at the Paralympics, has sent a team of 140 athletes to compete in 17 sports despite the challenges they face in preparing as the war against Russian forces rages at home.

A total of 96 athletes from Russia and Belarus will compete under a neutral banner but are barred from the ceremonies because of the invasion of Ukraine.

Every Games produces new stars, and in this edition look to American above-the-knee amputee sprinter/high jumper Ezra Frech to make the headlines. Away from the track, more established names go in search of glory.

Iranian sitting volleyball legend Morteza Mehrzad, who stands 8ft 1in (2.46m) tall, will attempt to take gold again and Beatrice 'Bebe' Vio, the Italian fencer who had to have all four limbs amputated when she contracted meningitis at the age of 11, is aiming for the third Paralympic title of her career.

The Paralympics always have a far wider message than simply sport and Parsons told AFP earlier this year he hopes the Paris edition will restore the issues that disabled people face to the top of the list of global priorities.

The Brazilian believes the Games "will have a big impact in how people with disability are perceived around the world". "This is one of the key expectations we have around Paris 2024; we believe that we need people with disability to be put back on the global agenda," Parsons said. "We do believe people with disability have been left behind. There is very little debate about persons with disability."

Dhawan announces international retirement

“I always had one goal in mind that was to play for India and I achieved it thanks to a lot of people. First of all my family, my childhood coach Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under their guidance, I learnt cricket. Then my entire team with whom I played for years, got another family, fame and everyone’s love and support. As it’s said that to move ahead in the story you need to flip over the pages. Hence, I’m also doing that, I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket," said Dhawan in the video.

“And now when I’m bidding adieu to my cricketing journey, I have the satisfaction that I played a lot for my country. I’m really thankful to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) for giving me this opportunity and all of my fans for their love and support. I just say this to myself that don’t be sad that you won’t play for your country again but always be happy that you played for your country. And it’s the biggest achievement for me that I played,” he added.

Having last represented India in December 2022 against Bangladesh in Chattogram, Dhawan was out of plans after the emergence of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan as openers for India alongside Rohit Sharma. He also captained India on several occasions when players from the senior team were rested or not available. His last international match for India against Bangladesh saw Ishan score a double hundred, which all but ended his career.

Dhawan was the Player of the Tournament in the 2013 Champions Trophy where India won the title comprehensibly. The title was also India’s last ICC tournament win at senior level until the recent success at the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. In total, he represented India in 167 ODIs and scored 6,793 runs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35 notching up seven hundreds and five fifties.

He also played 68 T20Is and scored 1759 runs at an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 126.36 registering 11 fifties. In the 34 Test matches, Dhawan scored 2,315 runs at an average of 40.61 with seven hundreds and five fifties to his name.

Veteran Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket thus dropping curtains on a two-decade-long career. The announcement was made on Saturday (Aug 24) with Dhawan, 38, bowing out as one of India’s most reliable assets in the International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: ICC unveil revised schedule; India to face Pakistan in marquee clash on October 6

Novak Djokovic's bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title kicked off on Monday with a rusty 6-2 6-2 6-4 win over qualifier Radu Albot in the U.S. Open first round as the defending champion returned to the court after his Olympic triumph.

Three weeks after winning the singles title at the Paris Games, Djokovic toted his rackets and gear in a pair of gold-coloured bags onto centre court where the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd gave him a hero's welcome.

But the Serb's golden touch was decidedly lacking in the late-night match as he struggled with serve and racked up nearly twice as many unforced errors as winners.

For all that, he had more than enough weapons to handle Moldovan Albot in their first tour clash and claim a record 78th win at Arthur Ashe under a closed roof.

"I was not aware of it, to be honest with you," Djokovic said of the centre court milestone. "It's definitely the loudest stadium we have in the history of our sport. The night sessions are the best in the world here."

While having never played Albot before, Djokovic said he had done his homework on the 34-year-old who beat both his younger brothers Marko and Djordje during their playing days.

"They both lost to him so hopefully I can avenge my brothers tonight," he told ESPN commentator Brad Gilbert with a laugh before taking the court.

Djokovic duly avenged the family name in three clunky sets but he will hope for better from his game as he looks to move past Margaret Court on the all-time Grand Slam winners' list.

With 10 double-faults, his serve was wild by his usual standards, and he winced throughout the night as 40 unforced errors piled up.

His coach Nenad Zimonjic was an animated presence, barking instructions in Serbian at the wayward champion, who could convert only six out of 16 break points.

Though Djokovic was well off his best, Albot was unable to make the world number two pay.

After bright starts in the first two sets, he crumbled on serve in each of them before making a better game of the third.

In the twilight of a record-smashing career, Djokovic is eyeing several milestones in New York, including a fifth title at Flushing Meadows to match the professional era record held by Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.

He also hopes to become the first back-to-back winner in the men's singles since Federer's run of five successive titles from 2004-08.

US Open 2024: Novak Djokovic begins quest for record Slam run with rusty first-round win

England have launched a new white-ball era after dropping Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali from their forthcoming clashes against Australia.

Bairstow and Ali have over 400 international appearances between them but the veteran pair have been deemed expendable as England revamp their limited overs line-up following disappointing ODI and T20 World Cup campaigns.

Matthew Mott was sacked as England's limited over head coach last month and the changes continued with Monday's squad announcement.

Five uncapped players have been called up for Marcus Trescothick's first assignment as interim coach.

Left-arm seamer Josh Hull, all-rounder Jacob Bethell and pace bowler John Turner were selected in both formats, while Dan Mousley and Jordan Cox come into the T20 group.

Moeen had been an influential vice-captain to Jos Buttler but is now 37 and has acknowledged his international career was winding down.

His role as a spin bowling all-rounder will be covered by his Warwickshire team-mates Bethell and Mousley.

Bairstow turns 35 next month but there is no such sense that he is ready to bring the curtain down on his England days.

He was an integral part of the white-ball revolution that carried the side to 50-over World Cup glory in 2019, scoring centuries against India and New Zealand in must-win games at that tournament.

Despite having around 14 months left on the two-year central contract he signed last October, Bairstow lost his Test spot earlier this year after winning his 100th cap over the winter.

Chris Jordan has also been axed, while Liam Livingstone has retained his T20 spot but misses out on the 50-over matches.

Durham seamer Brydon Carse was selected after completing a three-month ban for historical betting offences on Wednesday.

He has not played competitively since May 10 due to his suspension but has been offered an instant return by England's selectors.

Jofra Archer, whose only cricket since the T20 World Cup has been in the Hundred, retains his place in both squads.

The three-match T20 series against Australia starts at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton the day after England's third and final Test concludes against Sri Lanka.

Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Matthew Potts will take a short break before joining up with Trescothick's ODI team for the five-match series.

Joe Root is not included in what is believed to be a case of workload management ahead of a busy winter.

Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are all out injured but fast bowler Saqib Mahmood returns after recovering from his own fitness issues.

England axe Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali for white-ball series against Australia

Former champion Dominic Thiem's final appearance at the U.S. Open ended tamely on Monday after he was beaten 6-4 6-2 6-2 in the first round by American Ben Shelton.

The Austrian has struggled to reproduce the form that carried him to the 2020 Flushing Meadows title and announced he would retire from the sport this season after being troubled by a wrist injury in recent years.

Shelton leaned on his powerful forehand and sent over eight aces to open the action on Arthur Ashe Stadium, as the 21-year-old hopes to recapture the magic of his charmed run to the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Despite struggling with his serve, Thiem showed he had some fight left in him as he fended off two break points in the 10th game but a relentless Shelton forced him into an error to break him on the third attempt to take the opening set.

The American extinguished Thiem's lone break point opportunity in the opening game of the second set and the Austrian handed Shelton a break in the second game with a double fault and an unforced error.

Shelton showed he could be a threat over the next two weeks as he broke Thiem again to close out the second set. He ran away with the match in the third set, pummeling 34 winners in a confident performance.

"Not much better atmosphere than being here at Ashe," said Shelton, who will next play Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut. "I'm glad that I had the opportunity to open it up here."

Thiem, who hoisted the trophy in front of empty stands in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, stayed back on court for ages on Monday to sign memorabilia for fans.

"I am super happy I got the chance to play my last U.S. Open match on this court," Thiem said. "I can now spend some time with you guys to say thank you to all of you and to make the time up that we missed four years ago."

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem exits first round after straight-set defeat to American Shelton

Coco Gauff launched her US Open title defence with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Varvara Gracheva on Monday, firing 10 aces and saving eight break points to advance.

The 20-year-old American worked through some tight moments early on to polish off the victory in 66 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where she captured her first Grand Slam title last year.

She was breezing through the second set when France's Gracheva, ranked 66th in the world, mustered a pair of break points in the final game.

Gauff saved both with aces as she booked a second-round meeting with Tatjana Maria of Germany, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Argentina's Solana Sierra.

"I served well," Gauff said. "Can't ask for a better start into this tournament, so hoping to continue to get better as the week, two weeks go by."

Gauff's build-up to the final Grand Slam of the season has been less than ideal. She fell in the third round at Toronto and lost her first match as the defending champion in Cincinnati.

But she said taking the long view was helping her stay steady as she tries for the first time to defend a major title.

"The last couple of weeks were tough, and I was, like, 'I have to do this and do that.'

"But I don't have to prove anything to anyone except myself," she said.

"Just learning and just realizing that I have a lot left to give this game, and whether that's going to happen this year or in the future, I have many more years coming back here," she said. "And I'm not going to win every year."

She said that perspective, "and just having the belief that I can but not the expectation that I should" win had tamped down the pressure.

So did the confidence in her game that had built practice, despite her disappointing recent results.

"I wasn't surprised about my level because I was practicing really well this week," she said.

"It was a really good practice week. So honestly, I was just telling myself that I'm ready, I had a great practice week, I feel like I'm finding my game, whereas the other two tournaments that I played at, even the practice sessions I was doing, I just felt off.

"Can't ask for a better start into this tournament, so hoping to continue to get better as the week, two weeks go by." Gauff's build-up to the final Grand Slam of the season has been less than ideal. She fell in the third round at Toronto and lost her first match as the defending champion in Cincinnati. ALSO READ: Sven-Goran Eriksson, former England manager, dies at 76 after prolonged illness But she said taking the long view was helping her stay steady as she tries for the first time to defend a major title. "The last couple of weeks were tough, and I was, like, 'I have to do this and do that.' "But I don't have to prove anything to anyone except myself," she said. "Just learning and just realizing that I have a lot left to give this game, and whether that's going to happen this year or in the future, I have many more years coming back here," she said. "And I'm not going to win every year." She said that perspective, "and just having the belief that I can but not the expectation that I should" win had tamped down the pressure. "I knew based off how I was practicing I can find my game regardless of the scoreline. Then it's just about executing." Bangladesh Cricket Team players have come out in support of their veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who was charged with the alleged murder of a garment worker during the protests in the country on August 5. Shakib, Bangladesh’s greatest and one of the modern-day game’s best all-format players, played a handy role in helping Bangladesh clinch its maiden Test win over Pakistan in Rawalpindi by ten wickets.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and keeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim took to social media to support their teammate and star player after the first Test win. Shanto said everyone was shocked by such allegations against him and is confident that Shakib will come out of this clean.

Bangladesh captain Shanto, veteran Mushfiqur lend support to Shakib Al Hasan amid murder allegations

Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic still feels the pull of tennis history as he aims to become the first man in 16 years to successfully defend his US Open title.

Second-seeded Djokovic, riding the high of his Olympic triumph in Paris, is chasing a raft of records at Flushing Meadows, where he opens his campaign on Monday night against Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot.

The 37-year-old can join Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer as the oldest Open era winners of the championship, and with a 25th Grand Slam title claim the outright record for most ever -- a mark he currently shares with Australian great Margaret Court.

He would also become the first man to repeat in New York since Federer won five straight US Opens from 2004-2008.

"I didn't know about that," Djokovic said. "I knew it was probably the case for five, 10 years, but I didn't know it was that long.

"Hopefully that changes this year. That's the goal."

ALSO READ: Armand Duplantis sets pole vault world record at Silesia Diamond League

A victory would see Djokovic extend his streak of years with at least one Grand Slam title to seven. From 2011-23 he was shut out at the majors just once, in 2017.

So far in 2024 the majors have gone to a new generation. Spain's Carlos Alcaraz is chasing a third straight Grand Slam after triumphs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Italian Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open on his way to supplanting Djokovic atop the world rankings.

With Federer retired and Rafael Nadal battling injuries, Djokovic said his budding rivalries with the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner keep him motivated.

"These kind of rivalries that I have with Jannik and Carlos are the kind of matchups that still bring that joy of competition to me and inspire me to really push myself to perfect the game," Djokovic said. "People ask me 'now that you have basically won everything with the golden medal, what else is there to win?'

"I still feel the drive. I still have the competitive spirit. I still want to make more history and enjoy myself on the tour."

Djokovic called the medal ceremony after his Paris Games triumph "probably the most intense emotions I have ever had on a tennis court".

"I think the moment of when I achieved it, how I achieved it, after years of trying, the journey... makes it even more unique."

However, he doesn't envision any let-down as he tries to close out the season with yet another Grand Slam title.

That's the goal." ALSO READ: Armand Duplantis sets pole vault world record at Silesia Diamond League A victory would see Djokovic extend his streak of years with at least one Grand Slam title to seven. "People ask me 'now that you have basically won everything with the golden medal, what else is there to win?' "I still feel the drive. I still have the competitive spirit. I still want to make more history and enjoy myself on the tour." Djokovic called the medal ceremony after his Paris Games triumph "probably the most intense emotions I have ever had on a tennis court". "I think the moment of when I achieved it, how I achieved it, after years of trying, the journey... makes it even more unique." However, he doesn't envision any let-down as he tries to close out the season with yet another Grand Slam title. "Grand Slams are the pillars of our sport," Djokovic said. "They are the most important historical tennis events that we have. "So, if you don't get pumped and inspired to play your best tennis at Grand Slams, it's hard to do that anywhere else." Novak Djokovic chases rafts of records in quest to defend US Open title

A late goal by Serge Gnabry secured Bayern Munich a 3-2 Bundesliga victory at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday and gave their new coach Vincent Kompany a winning start.

Wolfsburg began brightly but it was the visitors who made the better chances in the first half, taking the lead after fine work by Frenchman Sacha Boey down the right to set up Jamal Musiala for an easy tap-in.

Bayern made a poor start to the second half, however, as they gave away a penalty when Tiago Tomas was brought down by Boey, and Lovro Majer made no mistake from the spot.

Wolfsburg created all kinds of trouble for the visitors' defence and, in the 55th minute, Patrick Wimmer squared the ball for Majer, who slotted it home to score his second goal.

Winger Jakub Kaminski's own goal brought Bayern on level terms before Gnabry, assisted by Harry Kane, struck into the corner in the 82nd minute to secure all three points for the Bavarians.

"We are very happy and are happy to take it. It's good for morale and self-confidence," Gnabry said. "It was a very exhausting Sunday afternoon. The equaliser straight after halftime knocked our socks off a bit. Then we were down 2-1, which made it even more difficult. But at the end of the day, we were rewarded and won 3-2."

With Kane and new signing Michael Olise looking lively and frequently finding promising positions, Bayern created a host of other chances, but Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara made some brilliant saves to deny the duo.

Thomas Mueller, who equalled a club record with his 709th competitive appearance for Bayern, breathed life back into his side after coming on as a substitute in the 65th minute and was decisive in their win.

The record German champions, who were upstaged last season by Bayer Leverkusen, appointed former Burnley manager Kompany to succeed Thomas Tuchel after their disappointing third-place finish last campaign.

Wolfsburg boss Ralph Hasenhuettl was proud of his side after they produced a spirited performance.

"We had a few chances in the second half. We've developed nicely over the last few months. We played fantastically in the second half," Hasenhuettl said. "What we can do better is to score the third goal. You can't defend everything away against Bayern. We threw ourselves into every duel."

Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg to give Vincent Kompany winning Bundesliga start

Spanish champions Real Madrid earned a 3-0 win over Real Valladolid in La Liga on Sunday as Kylian Mbappe made his Santiago Bernabeu bow without finding the net.

Atletico Madrid comfortably beat last season's surprise package Girona by the same scoreline later on in the capital.

Madrid's French striker Mbappe played at home for the first time in a Los Blancos shirt but was largely frustrated by Valladolid's defence.

Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde opened the scoring after 50 minutes and substitutes Brahim Diaz and debutant Endrick struck late on.

Without the injured Jude Bellingham Madrid created little in the first half but did enough after the break to earn their first win of the season, following an opening draw at Real Mallorca.

Still lacking fluency in attack, Carlo Ancelotti's side stayed two points behind rivals Barcelona, who beat Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

"We were too slow in the first half, the second half we were much more active, there was more movement, much faster with the ball," said Ancelotti.

Real Valladolid set out to frustrate the champions in the summer heat and succeeded for 45 minutes.

Madrid came out with more bite in the second half and Valverde smashed home a vicious low free-kick with the help of a deflection to break the deadlock.

Endrick arrives

Mbappe blew a golden opportunity to get off the mark when Vinicius cut the ball across to him, but Estonian goalkeeper Karl Hein saved well.

The France captain had another chance on the counter-attack but fired wide before being replaced by 18-year-old Brazilian forward Endrick.

Mbappe scored on his debut in a UEFA Super Cup triumph but in La Liga, has failed to score in his opening two matches.

"He's a spectacular forward, very fast, moves well without the ball, attacks in behind, he had three or four chances (which were) created with his movement," said Ancelotti. "In this position, he will score like he always scores, I don't think he needs to play from the left, in the centre in the end he will score goals."

Diaz secured Madrid's win with a neat lobbed finish and then teed up Endrick, who drilled home at the near post to celebrate his first appearance for the club in style.

"(Endrick) has got a lot of potential and for his goal he showed his quality," added Ancelotti. "He's a centre-forward who plays in the box, in small spaces he's very dangerous."

Madrid signed Endrick from Palmeiras in 2022 but he arrived this summer, once old enough to move.

Out-of-favour West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite smashed his helmet like a cricket ball and broke it as he showed dissent over an umpiring howler during the MAX60 Caribbean T10 tournament in the Cayman Islands. Known for his heroic finish in the 2016 T20 World Cup final (against England), wherein he hit Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes to win the tournament for his team, Brathwaite was raging with anger over the faulty call on his dismissal.

Former Mumbai Indians captain and star batter Rohit Sharma could play for another franchise if MI decides against retaining him ahead of IPL 2025. With all teams involved eagerly awaiting BCCI’s decision on changes concerning auction rules, including the reintroduction of the Right to Match (RTM) card and clarity on number of retentions, one specific team – Punjab Kings, has expressed keenness in bagging Rohit’s service, provided they have the balance.

Rohit lost his MI captaincy to Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2024, with the MI management taking this call looking at the future. Though the India ODI and Test captain is yet to break his silence on this, Rohit’s performance and his body language during the last season were enough to reflect how he felt about this transition.

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has rued ‘plenty of errors’ for his team's embarrassing loss at the hands of Bangladesh in the first Test in Rawalpindi by ten wickets. Despite batting first on a pitch that offered no assistance for the bowlers, Pakistan declared late on day two, only for Bangladesh to bat for nearly two days afterwards and take the lead heading into the final four sessions.

Though Masood’s call to declare when they were cruising at 448 for six looked apt for the situation at hand, in hindsight, that became the reason for their loss.

Addressing the media after his country’s first loss to Bangladesh in Tests, Masood admitted his team made plenty of mistakes during the first four days, with the bowlers failing to capitalise with the second new ball hurting them more.

"As a team, we made many mistakes over the four days, and Bangladesh were worthy winners," Masood said during the media chat.

"They were very disciplined in their batting. We gave them a few chances as well when Mehidy and Mushfiqur [Rahim] were playing. As a bowling unit, where we lost the game was the second new ball. That's where we could have imposed ourselves on the game and let ourselves down,” he continued.

Wrong reading of pitch and weather cost Pakistan

Masood honestly admitted how he, the leadership group, and management failed to read the pitch and overhead conditions, adding the weather forecast influenced his decision to declare the innings on day two.

However, he added Pakistan was at least 50 to 100 runs short.

"If you asked me now, we would have liked another 50-100 runs," the Test captain said.

"That would have kept us in the game. The forecast also indicated the weather would be disruptive during the game. Those were our thoughts behind the declaration as well. We only lost six wickets in the first innings. We could have easily scored 550-600 if we'd carried on batting. But we also let ourselves down with the bat today,” he added.

Further commenting on how they strategised their final XI, with Pakistan playing an all-pace attack – only for the second time in 28 years at home, Masood admitted workload management and the pitch conditions were considered before zeroing in on the playing XI.

"I don't want to be commenting on day five because we didn't expect the game to hold up for four or five days. When you play three fast bowlers in this weather that's a lot of workload on the fast bowlers. If you play a spinner, the spinner's probably bowling 30 overs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan and Bangladesh will play the second Test at the same venue starting August 30.

(With inputs from agencies)

The 24-year-old Swede was congratulated by Polish President Andrzej Duda, who came onto the track and shook his hand.

In the 3,000 metres, Ingebrigtsen, who lost his 1500m Olympic crown but won the 5,000m title, held his hands to his face in astonishment, then on top of his head, mouth agape, after posting a time of 7min 17.55sec.

The 23-year-old Norwegian smashed Kenyan Daniel Komen's 28-year-old mark by more than three seconds.

Kenya's Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi had entertained hopes of breaking compatriot David Rudisha's 800m world record of 1:40.91 set as he won Olympic gold in London in 2012.

However, Wanyonyi's thunder was stolen by his great rival over the distance, Canada's world champion Marco Arop, who looked on course to set the record himself until tying up in the final few metres.

Arop, who took silver behind Wanyonyi in Paris earlier this month, finished in 1:41.86.

Another Olympic champion from Africa, Letsile Tebogo, made no mistake in the 200m. The 21-year-old Botswanan swept imperiously past American Kenny Bednarek, who had led into the straight, to win.

Tebogo, who was awarded two houses and a diamond on his return home following the Olympics, timed a meet record of 19.83sec.

Bednarek's compatriot Fred Kerley won the men's 100m, in 9.87sec, his task made easier by Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson sitting out the race even though he was due to run.

Kerley, who finished third behind Noah Lyles and Thompson in the Olympic final in Paris, beat Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala (9.88) with Blake Ackeem of Jamaica third (9.89sec).

Italy's Tokyo Olympic champion, Marcell Jacobs, was fourth (9.93).

Femke Bol and Karsten Warholm both set meet records in the women's and men's 400m hurdles, showing they had shrugged off the disappointment of failing to win the Olympic titles in Paris.

Dutch star Bol had cried after she failed to mount a challenge to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in Paris, finishing third, but with the American absent, she won her second Diamond League race inside a week, timing 52.13sec.

Warholm has had to get over his Olympic disappointment in being dethroned as champion by Rai Benjamin, the Norwegian doing it in the best way possible in a time of 46.95sec.

Marileidy Paulino rubber-stamped her authority over the 400m as she timed a meet record of 48.66sec, the first four filling the same spots they did in the Olympic final in Paris.

Olympic champion Grant Holloway avenged his defeat in Lausanne on Thursday by edging Jamaica's Rasheed Broadbell in the 110m hurdles.

Holloway timed 13.04sec with Olympic bronze medallist Broadbell recording his fastest time of the season, 13.05sec.
