Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior has called for Spain to be stripped of its 2030 World Cup hosting duties unless it makes progress on the issue of racism in stadiums.

The Real Madrid star, who has repeatedly been the victim of racist abuse from opposition fans at La Liga matches, said during an interview broadcast on CNN on Tuesday that more needs to be done to change attitudes in Spanish society.

"Until 2030, there is a lot of room for improvement, so I hope that Spain can evolve and understand how serious it is to insult someone because of the colour of their skin," the 24-year-old striker said.

"If by 2030 things don't improve, I think we have to move the location because if a player doesn't feel comfortable and safe playing in a country where they can suffer racism, it's a bit difficult."

His comments caused an uproar in Spain, which will host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco, with three matches also taking place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

"Spain is in no way a racist country," Vinicius's Real Madrid teammate Dani Carvajal told a news conference on Wednesday, adding Spain "does not deserve to be deprived of the World Cup".

"I know what Vinicius has to put up with but La Liga is improving and protocols are being drawn up so that these people can no longer take part in sporting events," the defender said.

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente agreed with Carvajal.

"There are always undesirables but Spain is not racist, it is an example of coexistence and integration," he said.

Madrid's conservative mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida condemned Vinicius's comments, calling them "deeply unfair", and said he should apologise.

A Spanish court in June handed three Valencia fans eight-month jail terms for racist abuse towards Vinicius Junior at a La Liga match last year, the first such conviction in Spain.

In July, another person was given an eight-month suspended jail term for online racist abuse targeting Vinicius and his German Real Madrid teammate Antonio Rudiger.

Ace India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant acknowledges Bangladesh’s rise after their maiden series win over Pakistan, admitting India is not taking them lightly. As India and Bangladesh face off in two Tests starting September 19 in Chennai, Pant downplays discounting Bangladesh, saying because the pressure is so much more in international cricket, no one can afford to underestimate any opposition.

The stylish left-handed batter returned to international cricket after&nbsp;spending more than a year on the sidelines due to multiple yet severe injuries suffered during a road accident on December 30, 2022. Although he missed all the cricket action last year, Pant gears up for the upcoming hectic schedule, where India plays ten Tests in the next five months, including two against Bangladesh and three versus New Zealand at home before flying Down Under for a five-match series against Australia.

Selected to play in the first round of the Duleep Trophy, which began on Thursday (September 5), Pant reflected on the importance of playing domestic cricket and how India is preparing for the first series of the home season.

“Asian teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka excel in their home conditions because they are familiar with the wickets,” Pant said during a chat with Jio Cinema.&nbsp;

“As the Indian team, we focus on maintaining our own standards and looking at how we can improve. We play with the same intensity regardless of the opposition and aim to give 100 per cent every day.

"There's always pressure because, in international cricket, you can't afford to underestimate any series. The margins between winning and losing are very fine, and nowadays, the gap between international teams is quite narrow," Pant continued.

<h2>‘Playing domestic is crucial’</h2>

Playing his first red-ball game since December 2022, Pant got out cheaply on seven, playing for India B against India A in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

It took a stunning catch from India A captain Shubman Gill to dismiss him.

In a game that lasted only 65 balls, Singapore wrapped up Mongolia on just ten runs in ten overs – the joint-lowest total in T20I cricket ever, during the T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier A game in Bangi on Thursday (Sep&nbsp;5). Mongolia matched the Isle of Man’s record, which they registered against Spain last year.

Meanwhile, of the five lowest T20I team totals ever recorded, three belong to Mongolia – two of which (12 against Japan and 17 against Hong Kong in Kuala Lumpur) came earlier this year.&nbsp;

Singapore took just five balls to complete the run chase of 11 after losing their only wicket on the first ball. While this is Singapore’s second win in this competition, Mongolia is winless, with four losses in as many games, placed at the bottom of the points table.

The 17-year-old Singapore leg-spinner, Harsha Bharadwaj, picked his career-best figures of six for three in four overs, also the second-best bowling figures in T20Is. The rookie spinner picked two wickets in his opening over, later resulting in five of Mongolia’s six wickets lost in the Powerplay.&nbsp;

Besides, five Mongolian batters registered ducks during the innings. Their partnerships for the fourth and fifth wicket, respectively, lasted only 11 balls - the longest during the game.&nbsp;

While chasing, Singapore batter Raoul Sharma slammed a six off his first ball, with William Simpson sealing a nine-wicket win for Mongolia with a four off the penultimate delivery of the first over.

Per the standings in Asia Qualifier A, Hong Kong leads the chart with four wins in four contested matches thus far, while Kuwait and Malaysia are placed second and third, with eight and six points, respectively.

Mongolia will face Maldives next on Friday (Sep&nbsp;6) in Kuala Lumpur.&nbsp;

Pakistan was to host England for three Tests in October later this year; however, due to construction delays at three venues – Multan, Karachi and Rawalpindi, the PCB could be forced to move the series out of the country. Per the latest reports, the UAE and Sri Lanka are being discussed as two potential alternatives, as dark clouds also loom over television rights for this series.

As per the reports in the Express Tribune, due to ‘incomplete preparations of the cricket stadiums’, which were under construction for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, the organisers could be forced to host this series elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Karachi was supposed to host the second Test of the recently concluded Pakistan-Bangladesh series. However, due to the redevelopment programme at the National Stadium, both matches took place in Rawalpindi. Following the series, which Bangladesh won 2-0, creating history, construction work resumed in Rawalpindi.

And with two venues in the Gulf—Dubai and Sharjah—hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from October 3 to 20, after the tournament was moved out of Bangladesh due to political unrest in the country, Abu Dhabi is the only option remaining.&nbsp;

Considering Abu Dhabi has hosted countless Pakistan Tests for the larger part of the last decade, it can host the entire series this time. However, knowing that the third Test is scheduled after the Women’s T20 WC Final, either Dubai or Sharjah can host the final match of the series.

The other option is Sri Lanka, a country with more venues. But, given the monsoon season, PCB is less likely to opt for it despite Sri Lanka's ground staff gaining a reputation for making a ground match-ready regardless of the rainfall.

<h2>Past may haunt Pakistan</h2>

The Shan Masood-led Test side suffered an embarrassing home defeat against Bangladesh, and is considering what England did to them when they last toured during the 2022 winters (beating Pakistan 3-0 in an away series), they have a lot to ponder as to how to return to the winning ways.

Though they still have a chance to play the World Test Championship (WTC) Final next year at the Lord’s, with their PCT reading a mere 19.5 (placed in the eighth position), Pakistan know they have a mountain to climb in the upcoming Test series.

England, however, has been on a rampage during the home summer, winning five out of as many contested matches. After they beat West Indies (3-0 at home), they clinched the Test series win over Sri Lanka (2-0), with the final Test scheduled on Friday (September 6) at The Oval in London. &nbsp;

In the absence of England’s regular white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, who received a setback in his recovery from a right calf injury, keeper-batter Phil Salt will lead the side in the three-match T20Is against Australia starting September 11. While Buttler is said to miss the remaining home summer, including the five ODIs against the Aussies beginning September 19, emerging star player Harry Brook is expected to lead the One-Day team.

Buttler sustained this injury in July earlier this year while preparing for The Hundred, which later ruled him out of the competition. Buttler, however, targeted Lancashire's Vitality Blast quarter-final against Sussex on Wednesday (September 4) for a comeback but got ruled out.&nbsp;

Now, after having aggravated the injury, Buttler could miss the remaining home games, having not played any cricket for the country since the T20 World Cup semis loss against India on June 27. Salt, yet to captain in international cricket, had only led Manchester Originals during The Hundred, filling in for Buttler.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Jamie Overton is named Buttler’s replacement in the T20I squad, and though if picked in the XI, he would only play as a specialist batter as he continues to recover from a back stress fracture. Following the T20Is and ODIs, England will travel to Pakistan for three Tests before heading to the Caribbean for three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies.&nbsp;

England will then travel to New Zealand for three Tests before returning to Asia for the India series and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

India at Paralympics 2024, Day 8 schedule: Everything you need to know

Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has died in Kenya four days after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Ugandan athletics officials said Thursday.

"We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei... following a vicious attack by her boyfriend," the president of the Uganda Olympic Committee Donald Rukare said in a post on X.

"This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure," he added.

According to police, a man identified as Cheptegei's partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her with petrol and set her alight on Sunday at her home in Endebess in the western county of Trans-Nzoia.

The incident took place just weeks after Cheptegei, 33, had taken part in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she placed 44th.

Cheptegei suffered burns to 80 percent of her body and had been fighting for her life at a Kenyan hospital since, the acting head of the facility told reporters on Tuesday.

"All her organs failed last night," a medic at the facility, the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), told AFP on Thursday.

Kenyan media had reported that one of Cheptegei's daughters witnessed the assault at her mother's home.

"He kicked me while I tried to run to the rescue of my mother," Kenya's The Standard reported her as saying. "I immediately cried out for help, attracting a neighbour who tried to extinguish the flames with water, but it was not possible," said the girl, who has not been named.

Marangach was also wounded in the incident, sustaining 30 percent burns on his body.

<h2>'We call for justice'</h2>

The Uganda Athletics Federation also reported Cheptegei's death in a statement on X.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence," it said.

"As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace."

The attack on Cheptegei has again thrown the spotlight on domestic violence in Kenya.

The assault comes two years after Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was found dead in Iten, a world-famous running hub in the Rift Valley.

And in 2021, record-breaking Kenyan runner Agnes Tirop, 25, was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten in 2021. Her estranged husband is on trial over her murder and has denied the charges.

Latest figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics published in January 2023 found that 34 percent of women in the country had experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

Paralympics 2024: The ongoing Paralympics in Paris, France has been one of the greatest shows by Indian athletes on the world’s biggest sporting stage. India achieved its highest-ever medal tally on Tuesday (Sep 3) with 20 medals, crossing the mark of Tokyo haul at 19.

But what makes this medal tally even more cathartic are the Indian medal winners, each of who has a story to tell, a story that can inspire an entire generation. One such story is of Deepthi Jeevanji, who clinched the 16th medal for India with a bronze in the 400m T20 race.&nbsp;

Deepthi made history at Paris 2024, becoming the first intellectually impaired Indian athlete to win a Paralympic medal on Tuesday. The 20-year-old finished the race in 55.82 seconds, behind Ukraine’s Yulia Shuliar and Turkiye’s Ayser Onder.&nbsp;

“I was very tired during the race," Deepthi said after the race. "My body was not used to the time difference (with India).”

For India, this might be its 16th medal in the tally, but for Deepthi it means much more than just a medal.&nbsp;

This is Deepthi’s story.

<h2>Once called a ‘monkey’, Deepthi defies all odds to clinch the sweetest victory at Paris 2024</h2>

Deepthi was born in a small village in the Warangal district of Telangana. Her parents owned a half acre of agricultural land; which was not enough to make ends meet, so they also used to work at others’ farms as daily wage labourers.&nbsp;

Deepthi was born with intellectual disability, a certain cognitive disease that hampered her communication as well as adaptive skills. Since her birth, Deepthi was considered a disgrace and was ridiculed by villagers when she was barely a month old.&nbsp;

“She was born during the solar eclipse and her head was very small at birth along with the lips and nose being a bit unusual. Every villager who saw her and some of our relatives would call Deepthi pichi (mental) and kothi (monkey) and tell us to send her to an orphanage.” Deepthi's mother told The Indian Express in May.

According to the interview, her mother said that&nbsp;Deepthi was always a calm child who spoke very little. Despite this, the village kids used to tease her, and she would come home crying, said Deepthi’s mother in the interview.&nbsp;

But Deepthi’s talent was recognised in Class 9 by her PET teacher in Warangal. She was a born athlete but lacked skill and support. Deepthi finally trained under coach N. Ramesh and began her journey of relentless progress.&nbsp;

Later on, she was also supported by Pullela Gopichand, who suggested that she be tested at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disability in Hyderabad. There, Deepthi was certified under the mentally impaired category, after the relevant tests, and that allowed her to participate as a para-athlete.&nbsp;

Dipthi was first selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, where she won the gold medal with a new Asian Para record and the Games record in October 2023 in the 400m run in the T20 category.

She was then selected to the Indian team that took part in the 2024 World Paralympics Championships in Kobe, Japan Championships in May in the 100m and 200m (Category F). Earlier, she qualified for the finals setting a new Asian record with a time of 56.18 seconds and secured a Paris 2024 Paralympics quota.

Now in 2024, Deepthi added one more feat to her name and won her first medal at the Paralympics.

“I am very happy, so happy for this first medal at the Paralympics," Deepthi said. “My parents are also so very happy and very proud.”

India at Paris Paralympics, Day 7 full schedule: All you need to know including Arshad Shaik, Jyoti Gaderia

India has registered its best-ever medals tally at the ongoing Paris Paralympics as para-athletes continue to make the nation&nbsp;proud. With five medals on a superb Tuesday, India now has 20 medals at the Paris Paralympics, surpassing the 19-medal tally from the Tokyo 2020 Games (held in 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19). However, with fewer gold medals than the Tokyo Games, technically Paris Games is India’s second-best return in the quadrennial event.

<h2>India surpasses Tokyo tally</h2>

On Tuesday (Sep 3), Deepthi Jeevanji and Sharad Kumar were the stars of the show as they won medals in their respective events. Mariyappan Thangavelu, Ajeet Singh and Sundar Gurjar would then put icing on the cake taking India’s tally to 20 with a key medal addition.

India could have added more medals on the day had Bhagyashri Mahavrao and Avani Lekhara not narrowly missed out. Bhagyashri finished 5th in the Women's Shot Put while Avani took fifth position in the Women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 final.

So far India has collected three gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals at the Paris Paralympics marking a historic run. With Para Games coming to a close on Sunday there is still time for India to add to their tally of medals as a historic run awaits.

<h2>India awaits for more history</h2>

As things stand, despite most medals at a single Para Games in Paris technically India is yet to better their Tokyo Para Games performance. With gold medals followed by silver medals deciding the order of standings, the Asian giants need two more medals to match their Tokyo Paralympics gold medal tally. India won five gold medals in Tokyo compared to Paris and needs at least two more gold medals in the remaining five days.

At the time of writing, India needs three outright gold medals or two gold medals and a silver medal to better their tally at the Tokyo Games.

India has registered its best-ever medals tally at the ongoing Paris Paralympics as para-athletes continue to make the nation proud. With five medals on a superb Tuesday, India now has 20 medals at the Paris Paralympics, surpassing the 19-medal tally from the Tokyo 2020 Games (held in 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19).

India registers best-ever medals tally after late show on Day 6 of Paris Paralympics Games

Two French rugby players held in Argentina for almost two months on rape charges headed home Tuesday after a court allowed them to return to France pending the conclusion of their case.

Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou arrived at Buenos Aires airport on Tuesday evening and headed for passport control without speaking to the press.

The players were due to board a flight to Paris shortly before midnight and were expected to arrive on Wednesday at 5:45 pm (1545 GMT), their lawyer Rafael Cuneo Libarona said.

Earlier in the day a court in Mendoza, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) west of the capital Buenos Aires, ruled that the duo can leave the country "from this moment," it said in a statement.

The prosecution had recommended that the players be allowed to travel because the accusation had "lost its initial force."

Jegou and Auradou, both 21, were arrested in July, two days after winning their first international caps against Argentina in Mendoza.

They were charged with the aggravated rape of a 39-year-old woman who alleged they viciously assaulted her in a hotel room after a nightout following the match.

The men deny the accusation, saying sex with the woman had been consensual.

They were released from detention into house arrest on July 17, and freed under supervision last month.

The pair were allowed to travel from Mendoza to Buenos Aires last week pending a hearing into a request for the charges to be dropped.

A date for that hearing has yet to be set.

Tuesday's ruling requires the pair to "appear if they are summoned to the Argentine consulate in France," to report virtually "as often as required," or return "to appear in Mendoza if requested."

A judge also rejected a request from the accuser for further psychological examinations of the rugby players.

<h2>Like a brute</h2>

Late Tuesday, the plaintiff gave an account to the press of what she said happened the night she met Auradou in a nightclub in Mendoza.

"When he asked me to go and have a drink at his hotel, I said yes," she told journalists from France 2's Envoye Special, in clips released ahead of the program's September 12 broadcast.

Once in the hotel room, she said she asked to leave, but alleged the rugby player prevented her from doing so.&nbsp;

"He grabbed my neck. He put me on the bed. He stripped me like a brute," she said, before choking her "so that I had no oxygen left".

"I tried to react by slapping him. Instead of stopping him, this slap only encouraged him to carry on."

According to the complainant, Jegou then entered the room.&nbsp;

But instead of helping her as she believed he would, she alleges he went on to assault her as well.

<h2>Joy and relief</h2>

The French Rugby Federation (FFR) welcomed Tuesday's ruling, and underscored the men must be considered innocent until proven otherwise.

Auradou's club in the French city of Pau expressed "joy and relief" at the news that he would be returning home.

According to the complainant's lawyer, Natacha Romano, her client suffered injuries to her face, back, breasts, legs and ribs, as well as bite and scratch marks.

Defense lawyers have pointed to witnesses and cameras allegedly detecting no injuries on the woman as she left the hotel.

The plaintiff's lawyers filed a motion on Monday for the recusal of the prosecutors in charge of the case, alleging a "lack of objectivity" on their part.

The woman, her representatives say, recently tried to commit suicide and would continue to suffer "irreparable harm" while the men she accuses resume their lives in France.

A Ugandan Olympian was in intensive care in Kenya on Tuesday, suffering 80 per cent burns after being doused with petrol and set on fire allegedly by her partner, the latest horrific incident of gender-based violence in the East African country.

Long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei was assaulted after her Kenyan boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach reportedly snuck into her home in Endebess in the western county of Trans-Nzoia at around 2:00 pm on Sunday while she and her children were at church, police said.

The attack took place just three weeks after the 33-year-old took part in the women's marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she was placed 44th.

"Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring (it) on Rebecca before he set her ablaze," a police report said Monday, adding that he was also injured by the flames.

It said that neighbours had put out the fire and taken the pair to nearby Kitale County Referral Hospital, where they were admitted with "multiple burns".

They were later transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in the Rift Valley city of Eldoret, where Cheptegei was admitted to the intensive care unit on Monday.

<h2>- Fighting to save her life -</h2>

"She sustained more than 80 per cent burns in the attack," the hospital's acting CEO Owen Menach told reporters.

"The burns were really, really severe, some of them are really deep, especially right to the muscles in the back," he said.

"We're doing all we can to save her life."

A member of staff at the hospital, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media, told AFP that Cheptegei's condition looked "serious with facial burns and bandages".

The police report did not mention if Cheptegei's children were hurt in the attack. Local media reported that her father and sister were at the hospital.

The Ugandan athlete and Marangach were a couple who "constantly had family wrangles", the police report said.&nbsp;

Acting hospital CEO Menach said that Marangach had also been admitted for treatment after sustaining burns to 30 per cent of his body.

Cheptegei is believed to have bought land and built a house in the Trans-Nzoia area, which lies on the border with Uganda, according to local media.

<h2>- 'Totally uncalled-for attack' -</h2>

Donald Rukare, president of the Uganda Olympic Committee, said the athlete was "viciously attacked" and wished her a full recovery.

"Let's all say NO to violence especially against women. This is totally unacceptable and we condemn this totally uncalled for attack," he posted on X.

The Ugandan Athletics Federation also expressed regret over the incident, saying on X that Cheptegei had "suffered severe injuries".

Latest figures by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics published in January 2023 found that 34 per cent of women in the country have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

It said women who had "been married are much more likely to have experienced violence", noting that 41 per cent of such women reported incidents compared to 20 per cent of unmarried women.

The assault on Cheptegei comes two years after Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was found dead in Iten, a world-famous running hub in the Rift Valley in the west of the country.

Her death followed the murder of record-breaking runner Agnes Tirop, 25, who was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten in 2021.

Tirop's estranged husband, Emmanuel Ibrahim Rotich, went on trial over her murder in 2023. He has denied the charges. His trial is ongoing.

Paralympics 2024: Indian shuttler Nitesh Kumar enters men's singles final

Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, the world's second-tallest man at 8 feet 1 inch (2.46 meters), has been forced to sleep on the floor during the Paris Paralympic Games. No, it's not any maltreatment or punishment, but because of&nbsp;his exceptional height,&nbsp;he has been unable to find a bed in the Paralympic Village that accommodates him.

The 36-year-old athlete, who has acromegaly— a rare condition causing excessive growth, continues to face numerous challenges, but his determination remains strong.

<h2>Determination over comfort</h2>

The team’s head coach Hadi Rezaeigarkani, praised Mehrzadselakjani’s focus and resilience &nbsp;“He doesn’t have a special bed, but he has got the most important aim in his mind. It doesn’t matter to him whether he will lie on the floor or he’s not going to have enough to eat. In any way, he has the mind to become a champion.”

<h2>Early life and health struggles</h2>

Born on September 17, 1987, in Kelachay, Iran, Mehrzadselakjani was diagnosed with acromegaly early on, leading to his extraordinary height by the age of 16. A bicycle accident in his teenage years caused a pelvis fracture, which resulted in his right leg stopping growing, making it shorter than his left and making it difficult for him to walk.

“I have always been called the ‘tall boy’ even before joining the national team or the Paralympic Games,” he told AFP following a training session at Iran’s Sports Federation for the Disabled in Tehran.

<h2>
Adapting to mobility challenges</h2>

Today, Mehrzadselakjani uses crutches or a wheelchair due to the variation between his legs. Despite these difficulties, he has made a significant impact on Iran's sitting volleyball team, earning the nickname "Fatal Weapon." The Paris Paralympics is his third appearance at the games.

Mehrzadselakjani and his team are aiming to secure their eighth Paralympic title in sitting volleyball. Iran has a strong track record in the sport, having won seven of the nine tournaments they have competed in since their debut in Seoul in 1988.

Scheffler, who began the season finale on 10-under, an advantage reflecting his top spot in the FedEx Cup standings, now sits on 21-under after his 5-under 66.

The Masters champion had begun the day with a seven-stroke lead but it was not only Morikawa who closed the gap ahead of the weekend. Xander Schauffele bounced back from his disappointing 70 in the opening round, to card 64 and move within five strokes of Scheffler.

Scheffler was as solid as ever with five birdies, his sole blemish coming on the par-4 13th where he found two bunkers before missing a nine-foot putt for par. The American was happy with his performance even if he felt he had been unlucky on the greens.

"I feel like my swing is in a good spot. I've hit it nice last couple days. Really felt like I've hit a lot of lips on the greens, but hitting a lot of quality putts," he said. "Today the putts that did not go in did not -- a lot of them did not miss the cup by very much. A lot of quality stuff out there, and I'm in a good spot going into the weekend," he added.

But while the handicap system gives Scheffler a buffer of protection from his rivals, Morikawa appears determined to push the favorite all the way. The American reached the turn 4-under and while he bogeyed the 11th he bounced back with birdies on the 13th and 14th.&nbsp; A late suspension of play for a storm warning threatened to disrupt his momentum, but Morikawa came out and birdied the last two holes to send a clear message to Scheffler.

"For me, it's just bringing energy and just kind of staying alive out there. I've got a game plan that I've set out, and I'm really going to stick to that, just knowing that we've got two more rounds left of the season," he said.

Being paired with Scheffler allowed Morikawa to see his rival close-up but he said he remained focused on his own task. "He's such a good player that you just know he's going to keep going low and making birdies. I saw that firsthand. I've seen it for years. For me, it's just keep my foot on the gas," he said.

Schauffele put his Thursday struggles out of mind as he produced a bogey free round and came back out in the late evening, after the delay, to make birdie on the last. "It was better. It was nice to finish off with two big putts. Pretty dark out, so happy those two went in. Keeps the momentum from what was a pretty good round," said this year's British Open and PGA Championship winner.

Schauffele said that Scheffler's lead meant there was no room for caution. "(Scottie's) been killing everyone at that all year. I know he's not going to let up, so there's only one way to get him," he said.

Australian Adam Scott and American Sahith Theegala and Wyndham Clark are all tied in fourth place on 12-under, nine behind Scheffler. Clark said there was no question of giving up the chase. "It's going to be very tough to catch up with him. He'd have to not play his best and I'd have to play unbelievable. I'm still chasing after that top spot, but I need some help. But a good round tomorrow, if I go shoot something 6-, 7-, 8-under, maybe he shoots even par and we're right in it," he said.
