India has officially bettered their Paralympics performance having clinched their sixth gold medal on Friday (Sep 6). India’s Praveen Kumar won the gold medal in the Men's High Jump - T64 event meaning India now has one more gold medal in Paris than they had at their previous best in Tokyo. Praveen with an attempt of 2.08 metres won the gold as India now looks to set a new benchmark at the Paris Paralympics Games.

Praveen takes gold for India

On Day 9 of the Paris Para Games, all eyes were on Praveen. The Indian para-athlete did not disappoint and won gold with a 2.08-metre jump on the second attempt. He started the round with jumps of 2.00m and 2.03 m, followed by 2.06m, before going for his best shot. He had earlier jumped 1.93m at one stage but made sure he held on to the gold medal once he got jumps above 2 metres.

As a result of his gold medal, Praveen joins Avani Lekhara, Kumar Nitesh, Sumit Antil, Harvinder Singh and Dharambir Nain to win the top prize at the Paris Para Games.
Italy went behind after 12 seconds but came back to beat France 3-1 in a highly-entertaining Nations League A Group 2 opening game on Friday.

Bradley Barcola found the net in the opening minute when he caught Giovanni Di Lorenzo napping and raced into the area before curling his shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy levelled after half an hour with Federico Dimarco volleying home a deft back-heel flicked pass from Sandro Tonali, and the sides went in level at the break after a pulsating opening half.

Five minutes after the interval and France were rocked again with Davide Frattesi putting Italy ahead, and Giacomo Raspadori gave the visitors the breathing space they needed in the 74th minute to silence the Parc des Prince crowd.

Both sides came into the game looking for redemption after failing to impress at Euro 2024, but it was Italy who earned the much-needed victory.

Paris to name sports venue after murdered Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel created history nearly three years ago when he became only the third bowler after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble to pick up ten wickets in a Test inning against India in Mumbai. Since then, New Zealand has played 19 Tests, with the left-arm orthodox featuring in just five. Ahead of the Asian leg, where the Kiwis will play six Tests, Ajaz admitted to being excited for the new challenge this time.

Starting with the one-off Test against Afghanistan on September 9 in Greater Noida, Kiwis will travel to Sri Lanka next for two Test matches before returning to India to face Rohit Sharma-led side in three games. Patel, predominantly a sub-continent specialist, is back in the reckoning for a place in the XI, with other contenders like Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips also vying for a spot.

Speaking ahead of the Afghanistan Test, Ajaz said all Kiwi spinners would feel the same about opportunities, given the conditions back home, which assist seamers.

With New Zealand set to play six straight Tests in the Asian conditions, Ajaz feels the hunger to succeed has automatically increased.

“If you ask all New Zealand spinners, it is difficult sometimes. Obviously, you don’t get as many opportunities at home because of our home conditions,” Patel said to reporters in Greater Noida.

“At the same time, I guess it breeds more hunger when you know conditions are spin-friendly, and you’re quite hungry to get out there and play and put your best foot forward and perform. But it’s really important that you prepare accordingly and prepare well. So, it’s just about going into these games and really enjoying the conditions and making the most of it,” he continued.

‘I didn’t stop working on my game’

Any bowler who would pick ten wickets in a Test inning would expect to retain their place in the side regardless of the conditions; that, however, wasn’t the case with Ajaz Patel, who admitted being a little disappointed for being overlooked all this while.

But, with plenty of cricket ahead of him, the 35-year-old revealed he continued working on his game since that Mumbai Test and is now ready to take on the challenge.

“I guess after the 10 wickets, obviously you’re a little bit disappointed because you don’t get as many opportunities, but at the same time, as a player, it’s still about growing your game, and it’s an opportunity to develop and grow,” he said.

“I mean since my 10 wickets, I’ve kind of somewhat remodelled my run up and look to grow myself and try and get better. So, it’s always about improving, making sure that you’re ready whenever that next opportunity comes and putting your hand up. It’s always a privilege to play for New Zealand and certainly playing for your country. It’s never easy to get those opportunities, It’s always quite special,” he added.

Since retiring from Tests in June earlier this year, Anderson and ECB decided on this role for just two series – against West Indies and Sri Lanka. However, both parties have agreed to extend this tenure for the remainder of the year. "At the minute, I'm due to go to Pakistan and New Zealand in the winter," Anderson said in a chat with Sky Sports ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka. "Then nothing concrete after that. "I'm very new to this, I'm still learning as we go. It's partly me trying to figure out if this is where I want to go with the next stage of my career and also for them to figure out if I'm any good at it as well,” he continued. England's Ollie Pope shrugs off critics with record-breaking hundred against Sri Lanka at Oval

Ace England seamer Mark Wood got ruled out of the upcoming Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand due to a bone-stress injury to his left elbow. The premier fast bowler withdrew from the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka on precautionary grounds after suffering a right thigh strain during the first Test in Old Trafford. He, however, underwent a routine elbow scan, and following feeling discomfort in his joints, took to his Instagram handle to announce receiving some ‘pretty rubbish news’.

"During what I thought was routine check on a previously troublesome elbow, I was shocked to learn I've got some bone stress in my right elbow," Wood wrote on his social media handle.

"After the minor groin injury at Emirates Old Trafford, me and the medical team felt it was a good time to get my elbow looked at as it was a bit irritated," Wood added in his Instagram post. "I'd put that down to the normal niggles every fast bowler gets and which I was playing through.

"I'm especially surprised because I've been playing Test cricket and kept my speeds up.

Blow to England as Mark Wood ruled out of Pakistan, New Zealand tours with elbow injury

A small Italian town has banned cricket. Reason? The mayor believes that it is putting the cultural essence of Monfalcone in danger, a BBC report says. Monfalcone is home to just over 30,000 people and one-third of them are foreigners, the majority of them being Bangladeshi Muslims. They reached the town in the 1990s to build giant cruise ships.

If you are caught playing cricket in the town, you can be fined up to €100 ($111).

The mayor is known for having anti-Muslim sentiments. She has removed the benches in the town square which were used by Bangladeshis to sit. She has also spoken out against the attire worn by Muslim women at the beach. Cisint has also received death threats for her views.

The Indian contingent has been on a roll in the Paris Paralympics 2024 edition. India ended Day 8, on Thursday (Sep 5), with 25 medals overall -- i.e. their best-ever haul in a Paralympic edition -- and have a chance to add to their medal tally when their athletes take part on Day 9 events, on Friday (Sep 6). Paris Paralympics 2024: Britain’s Sarah Storey extends gold medal tally to record 19 in road race

England Test captain Ben Stokes has backed underfire stand-in skipper Ollie Pope, who has received severe criticism for his dry run with the bat. Since Stokes got ruled out of the home summer due to a torn left hamstring, Pope, his vice-captain, assumed the captaincy role, winning his maiden series against Sri Lanka. Though he has taken some brave calls as a skipper in the two Tests, Pope has averaged 7.50 from mere four innings.

From former England captain Michael Vaughan calling Pope ‘an insecure human being’ and ill-equipped to lead a national side to several stars putting him down for his lacklustre show thus far, Pope has a chance to turn the tables against SL, when the third Test gets underway at the Oval.

Stokes, who in the past has faced the wrath of the media and fans during his tenure, knows how to counter this.

ALSO READ: No Indian, 2 Sri Lankans named in ICC Player of the Month nominees in men’s and women’s categories

Labelling this as an unfortunate case of English culture towards sports, Stokes hailed Pope for how he led the team in the first two games despite not captaining at this stage.

"Unfortunately, it's just English culture towards sport," Stokes said to ESPNcricinfo ahead of the third Test vs Sri Lanka.

"There's always got to be someone in the firing line, and obviously, when you're captain, you are more exposed to that.

"He's won two games out of two in charge. At the end of the day, I think that's the thing that he's concentrated on the most. He obviously wants to be scoring runs and leading from the front. He's openly admitted that.

"People are very quick to jump on anything, to someone who's in the firing line and obviously Pope coming in and being captain whilst I'm injured, you can say he's the easy target there,” Stokes continued.

He’s led the team fantastically: Stokes

Despite getting ruled out from the on-field cricket, Stokes sat inside the dressing room throughout the series and watched Pope captain England to two straight wins.

"But I think he's done fantastically well in leading the team. He's done it his own way, which is something I encouraged him to do, to keep driving the team forward in the way that I've been trying to do, but make sure that you put your own personal touches to it.

"I think he's tactically he's done very well. Let's not forget before that first Test against Sri Lanka, he'd come off the back of fifty, fifty and a hundred (57, 121 and 51 in consecutive innings against West Indies). And then he doesn't have one good game, and everyone's saying he is out of form. It's like 'short memories people, come on!'"

Meanwhile, if England wins the final Test at The Oval, they will finish the home season unbeaten for the first time since 2004.

ALSO READ: No Indian, 2 Sri Lankans named in ICC Player of the Month nominees in men’s and women’s categories Labelling this as an unfortunate case of English culture towards sports, Stokes hailed Pope for how he led the team in the first two games despite not captaining at this stage. He’s led the team fantastically: Stokes Despite getting ruled out from the on-field cricket, Stokes sat inside the dressing room throughout the series and watched Pope captain England to two straight wins. It's like 'short memories people, come on!'" Meanwhile, if England wins the final Test at The Oval, they will finish the home season unbeaten for the first time since 2004. (With inputs from agencies)

“I am very confident in Buttler as captain. What I want from Jos is for him to enjoy the next few years,” McCullum said during a presser at the Oval ahead of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday (September 6).

“If he retired tomorrow, he would probably go down as the greatest white-ball player England have produced, so there is a chance for however long he plays to not protect anything and play with a smile on his face. My job is to push him towards that.”

“He has been a little bit miserable at times; he is not naturally as expressive as some, but he has done a great job,” he continued.

McCullum, who played against Buttler multiple times in the past decade, calls him a champion player and someone who is gifted and a team leader.

The former Kiwi skipper admitted his job is to allow Buttler to play freely so it could give confidence to the dressing room, motivating them to play better every time.

“He has won a World Cup as captain [the T20 edition in Australia in 2022] and been part of World Cup-winning teams previously. He is a gifted player and a fine leader.”

"My job is to get the best out of him so players in the dressing room feel bulletproof and 10 feet tall and know the skipper is going to give them that extra pat on the back and enjoy the ride with them,” Buttler said.

What will McCullum bring to the table?

Having impressed one and all with his dynamic coaching style, McCullum vows to instil positivity and style into the already daunting-looking white-ball side that has been through a lot since the past decade.

"I will bring the positivity and style I like to operate with across all formats, and I think it will give us a good chance of being successful."

"The white-ball side has been through a dynasty from when [Eoin Morgan] started it. They have won World Cups, and some once-in-a-generation players have come through at the same time."

"Now, a natural regeneration is required, and that's the bit that excites me. I look around at the talent, and they have learnt how to play from those once-in-a-generation cricketers,” McCullum noted.
