Lionel Messi dazzled in his return from injury Saturday, scoring two goals in the space of four minutes and adding an assist in Inter Miami's 3-1 Major League Soccer victory over the Philadelphia Union.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner hadn't played since injuring his right ankle during the Copa America final on July 14, when he helped Argentina to victory over Colombia.

Since then he had missed eight MLS games for his club and this month's World Cup qualifiers for his country.

Messi hadn't played for Inter since June 1, but he didn't miss a beat as he was inserted into the starting lineup.

"The truth is that I'm a little tired," he said after the match. "The heat and humidity in Miami don't help much either, but I really wanted to come back, I had been off of the field for a long time.

"Little by little I was training with the group, feeling good and that's why we decided that I would start, and I'm very happy -- very happy."

Miami coach Gerardo Martino was delighted to see his star come out "feeling good" after 90 minutes.

Philadelphia seized the advantage in the second minute on Mikael Uhre's left-footed shot from outside the area.

Messi grabbed the equalizer in the 26th minute, collecting a pass from Luis Suarez and beating defender Kai Wagner before unleashing a right-footed shot to cap a sequence launched by Jordi Alba on the left.

Ecstatic fans were still celebrating when he fired Inter ahead in the 30th, connecting again with Alba and firing a left-footed shot from the center of the area into the bottom right corner.

Inter thought Suarez had made it 3-1 before halftime, but his goal was overturned on a VAR review.

But Suarez added a goal deep in second-half injury time with Messi --&nbsp; who also picked up his first yellow card in MLS for lingering on a corner kick -- providing the assist.

Martino said the late goal vindicated his decision to leave both players in the game until the end, saying "both played the whole game because they were fine to finish the game".

The victory extended Inter Miami's lead at the top of the MLS standings to 62 points, 10 points clear of their closest Eastern Conference challengers FC Cincinnati with six games remaining in the regular season.

Messi is also pleased that despite his lengthy absence they lead the race for the Supporters' Shield awarded to the team that tops the overall standings.

Mohammed Shami calls India favourites to win the 2024 Border-Gavaskar series, backing the travelling side to complete a hat-trick of wins Down Under this time. India won the last two away editions in Australia, beating them in 2018-19 and 2020-21, respectively, in addition to winning at home several times.&nbsp;

Shami, who continues to recover from the ankle injury that kept him away since the ODI World Cup last year, feels the five-match series will be competitive but expects the Indian Team to stand tall once again.

"I believe India are the favourites to win the series. In the last series in Australia, we played with a young team, with many senior players absent, yet we still proved we were the best. I expect the next series to be highly competitive, but I'm confident that India will come out victorious," Shami said, as quoted in Cricbuzz.&nbsp;

Shami was part of the 2018/19 tour when India beat Australia in Australia across four matches for the first time in history but missed out on playing three Tests the last time after breaking his wrist during the Adelaide Test, which Australia won by 10 wickets.

Shami’s last appearance against the Aussies in a white jersey came during the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) Final, which Australia won for the first time.

<h2>‘I don’t want to rush myself’</h2>

Shami is currently training at the NCA in Bengaluru, with the selectors keeping a close tab on his fitness. Though the BCCI planned to name him in the squad for Bangladesh Tests starting September 19 in Chennai, they decided against doing so at the last minute, considering Shami didn’t attain full fitness by then.&nbsp;

With New Zealand Tests and a tour Down Under next, Shami wants to be completely fit and thus take more time to recover.

"I've already started bowling. I want to ensure there are no doubts in my mind and that I must not feel any discomfort. Unless I'm 100 per cent in every aspect - both mentally and physically - I won't consider returning to action. It doesn't matter which format I play or which team I'm selected for. If needed, I'll even play domestic cricket,” Shami continued.

<h3>India to beat Bangladesh at home</h3>

As India readies for the home season with two Tests against Bangladesh, Shami feels despite them winning against Pakistan in Pakistan, Bangladesh stand no chance against India in their conditions.

"It's fine if Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan, but we're playing at home. Bangladesh should consider our record, current form, and the strengths of the Indian team,” Shami added.

‘We are favourites to win Border-Gavaskar series’ – Shami confident of India completing hat-trick Down Under

The BCCI selectors could rest star opener Shubman Gill for the upcoming Bangladesh T20Is starting October 7, while Ishan Kishan could return to the Indian Team for the first time since his fallout with BCCI. Per the latest reports, the selectors will rest several big names, including the pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, for the T20Is as part of the workload management.

India’s home season begins with the Bangladesh series, including two Tests and three T20Is, followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand. Ahead of the five Tests Down Under&nbsp;from mid-November, India will also travel to South Africa for four T20Is.&nbsp;

With Gill playing a pivotal role at number three for India in Tests, resting him ahead of New Zealand Tests proves to be the right justification for the call.&nbsp;

With the selectors relying on Gill to deliver against Australia during the crucial away tour, the India opener must remain fit. Also, considering India will host England for a white-ball series early next year, with the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan for the February-March window, next in line, Gill’s fitness and form will determine India’s chances.

"Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16."&nbsp;

"So, with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, with veterans Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja announcing their T20I retirements earlier, the selectors are tasked to bring in their replacements for the future. However, as India are playing Bangladesh and South Africa in the shortest format this year, the selectors have time to try specific players for specific positions.&nbsp;

<h2>Ishan in for Pant</h2>

Rishabh Pant made an emphatic return to international cricket by winning his maiden T20 World Cup in the Americas in June this year. With him being a vital cog in the wheel of India’s Test Team, especially Down Under, the selectors might also rest him.

In his place, they might bring back Ishan Kishan, who recently scored a hundred for India C in the ongoing second round of the Duleep Trophy.&nbsp;

With Sanju Samson failing to make the most of the chances in domestic and international cricket, the selectors will look to give Kishan another chance. &nbsp;

India and Pakistan might not have played bilateral cricket for over a decade, but if the latest reports are to be believed, they might play together in the same team. Yes, you read it right.&nbsp;

For cricket fans worldwide, watching ace players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah play in the same team alongside Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi would be a dream. Considering grand changes happening within the ICC and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Shah winning the race to head the apex body and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi assumed to replace Shah as ACC head, the return of this intercontinental competition is on the cards.

Damodar also revealed its business model, where 80 per cent of the revenue generated from this tournament would go to the African continent, with the remaining sum distributed among the cash-rich Asian board.&nbsp;

However, per the new plan discussed, the Asian and African cricket boards aim to engage at multiple levels, with matches between the continents to be played in three stages - development (primarily at the under-19 level, seen as an investment), emerging, and pinnacle levels, with the latter involving current international players.

"That is the plan. We have yet to decide on the frequency - whether it will be annual or biennial. Much will depend on the calendar, the Future Tours Programme (FTP), and the international commitments of the players," Damodar continued.

Kohli, Bumrah to pair up with Babar, Rizwan? Reports say now-discarded Afro-Asia Cup could return soon

UEFA has warned the UK government that England risk a ban from the Euro 2028 tournament they are co-hosting if Prime Minister Keir Starmer goes ahead with existing plans for a men's football regulator, British media reported on Saturday.

In a letter to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, obtained by The Times and the BBC, European soccer governing body UEFA's General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis said there should be "no government interference in the running of football".

According to the letter, Theodoridis cautioned against plans outlined in the King's Speech to give the new regulator the power to oversee clubs in England's top five leagues, saying the game's independence was a "fundamental requirement".

Former South Africa great Jonty Rhodes broke his silence at missing out on Team India’s fielding coach role despite having Gautam Gambhir’s backing. Rhodes, regarded as the best fielder ever, has a long association with India and Indian cricket, having played handy leadership roles with several IPL franchises before. Moreover, he even named his daughter India.

Rhodes worked with Gambhir at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before Gautam returned to his former franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, ahead of the last season, which they won.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, before accepting Team India’s head coach role, Gambhir reportedly put out a few conditions, which included having the backroom staff of his choice. Though the BCCI accepted most of his conditions, with Gambhir bringing in Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, they retained T Dilip as the bowling coach.&nbsp;

T Dilip was India’s fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, with BCCI preferring to retain an Indian coach for the said position.

However, Rhodes, who now resides in Goa, detailed how he felt about missing out on the coveted job.

“Yeah! Can you believe it? I mean, they didn't want an international coach, and I'm so local. I mean, mera naam Jonty Rhodes! (I'm Jonty Rhodes) Come on. I'm based in Goa. Maybe because I'm based in Goa. Maybe I need to be in a metro (city),” the South African said during a podcast on Aleena Dissects YouTube channel.

<h2>Rhodes on Team India’s fielding standards</h2>

Rhodes has been following Indian cricket closely for the longest time, and upon being asked what he thinks of the team’s fielding standards, he said under two captains – MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, the Men in Blue have maintained fitness and fielding standards, something he’s proud of.

“I've taken my hats off to the last two Indian fielding coaches. And it comes from captaincy. Under Dhoni… he had a lot of senior guys, and he just showed his physical ability, he still does at the end of his IPL career. Running between the wickets.... amazing, and he's 40. It's incredible. He certainly showed, just through his example, the importance of fitness and strength,” said Rhodes.

“Then Virat Kohli took over, and it was a part of the selection criteria. If you don't pass the fitness standards, it doesn't matter how good you are. Everybody was treated equally, and it took India to becoming a good fielding team,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir, with his new-look backroom staff and the Test Team, assembled in Chennai on Friday (Sep 13), beginning the preparations for the Bangladesh Tests starting September 19 in Chennai.&nbsp;

Kanpur will host the second Test&nbsp;September 27 onwards.&nbsp;

Jonty Rhodes ‘surprised’ for being overlooked for India’s fielding coach role despite Gambhir’s backing

England all-rounder Liam Livingstone capped off his 50th T20I game with a stunning show, with both bat and ball, against Australia to level the three-match series 1-1 on Friday (Sep 13). The right-handed batter, dropped from the ODIs, continues his Midas touch with the ball in hand, picking two wickets in the first innings, and later crushed Australia’s chances of winning the series with his brilliant knock of 87 off 47 balls. England won the second T20I by three wickets.

Besides, fellow all-rounder Jacob Bethell, playing only his second international game, slammed a stunning 44 off just 24 balls, taking down one of Australia’s white-ball greats, Adam Zampa, for 20 runs off one over. Captain Phil Salt powered the run chase with 39 off 23 upfront.

France crashed out of the Davis Cup Friday when&nbsp;world No.3 Carlos Alcaraz beat Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-3 in the second rubber in Valencia with a convincing display. Davis Cup 2024: Carlos Alcaraz powers Spain to Last 8, USA, Australia and Germany also qualify

New United States coach Mauricio Pochettino said he has enough time to prepare for the 2026 World Cup on home soil, and implementing his philosophy to turn the team into genuine contenders is a challenge he is ready to embrace.

The Argentine manager, who left American-owned Premier League side Chelsea in May after one season, has been tasked with leading the team onto the global stage, with less than two years remaining until the finals, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

The 52-year-old, who formerly managed Paris St Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, said he has arrived at the helm at the right time, and American soccer fans need to believe that his side can emerge as champions despite the challenges they will face in adhering to his methods.

"Everyone thinks that there is no time to prepare and to arrive in our best condition to the World Cup. What I wanted to tell you is that I am on the opposite side. I believe that there is time enough," Pochettino told reporters on Friday. "I don't want to create an excuse for the player to say, 'We don't have time to buy the new idea, the new philosophy'. No, football is like this, it's to touch the right button and start to perform. "The players are so intelligent and so talented and they can, I think, play in a different way. USA coach Pochettino vows to transform team for 2026 home World Cup, says he's ready to embrace challenge

India men's hockey team beat Pakistan 2-1 on Saturday (Sep 14) in the Asian Champions Trophy. This was India's fifth straight win in the tournament as they entered the semis unbeaten. A total of six teams are participating in the tournament in round-robin format.

All the goals were done in the first half itself with India skipper Harmanpreet Singh scoring both of India's goals. It was Pakistan who drew first blood as Ahmad Nadeem scored in the 8th minute for them.&nbsp;

Harmanpreet scored the equaliser five minutes later on a penalty corner and scored another one in the 19th minute to give India eventually a decisive lead.

As with any Indo-Pak hockey match, the first quarter saw end-to-end action with both the teams giving their all to gain the bragging rights.

Prior to beating Pakistan, India had beaten host China, Japan, Malaysia and Korea as well. India won against China 3-0 in their first match before beating 5-1. India then annihilated Malaysia 8-1 and won over Korea 3-1 before beating Pakistan.

The semi finals are scheduled on September 16 and the final will be played on September 17.

The match also witnessed a heated encounter between Harmanpreet and Pakistan's Ashraf Waheed Rana after the latter shouldered Jugraj Singh inside the Indian circle.

Jugraj was felled by the impact and was seen grimacing in pain. Harmanpreet and Jarmanpreet Singh were quick to counter the offender.

The on-field umpires and Pakistan captain Butt and other players of both teams rushed in to control the situation but Rana was shown a yellow card, which resulted in a 10-minute suspension after the umpire went for a referral for serious misconduct.

Meanwhile, in the first match of the day, Malaysia and Korea played out a 3-3 draw.

Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: India beat Pakistan to enter semis unbeaten

Armand Duplantis was left basking after a victorious end to what he said had been his "best-ever" season at the Diamond League finals in Brussels.

But the US-born Swede said he would not necessarily be rushing into any more mid- or end-season exhibition races.

Duplantis beat Norwegian hurdles star Karsten Warholm in an exhibition 100m on the eve of last week's Diamond League meet in Zurich.

It was an event that he said had left him "wrecked". At least he made the competition the following day. Warholm pulled out with a hamstring niggle.

"I don't know if it's finished," he said of the concept. "But there's not going to be races anytime soon.

"If anything, it would be a relay with the Swedish squad if I think we had a chance to break the Swedish record."

Duplantis, who clocked 10.37 seconds to beat Warholm's 10.47, said he felt "pretty beat up right now".

"I don't think the timing was also maybe so perfect for us.

"Coming off the Olympics I haven't trained that much, I haven't trained for probably four weeks. Realistically I haven't done any sprint training so it was such a shock to my body and my energy.

"I don't think it would be as much of a problem as it was now, but it's the end of the season and you're already kind of just hanging on and I put my body through a lot.

"I don't regret it, it was amazing and we'll see what happens after this."

Warholm, he added, was "doing okay. He says it was nothing serious".

<h2>15th win of unbeaten season</h2>

Duplantis only vaulted three times in Brussels, at 5.62, 5.92 and 6.11m, the latter a new meeting record. It was his 15th straight win.

But a tilt at a fourth potential world record this season was never on the cards, having won Olympic gold in Paris with a new best of 6.26m.

"I just really prayed I'd make it on that first attempt," he said of the meeting record vault in Brussels.

Duplantis admitted he didn't have his mind set up for a world record.

"I just take it as it comes," he said. "I don't think my body was really going to allow me to take another jump honestly, at least my hamstrings.

"I didn't have the speed all the way to jump 6.27... I did what I had to do and I got the most out of what my body could do.

"Not every day is going to be like that when it comes to world records, and I'm aware of that, but it was not going to happen today."

Duplantis said he was looking forward to tasting a variety of Belgium's world-renowned beers before hitting the dancefloor.

"I have rhythm and I can dance a little bit, but it just depends on who you're comparing it to," he said, highlighting the disco skills of French 110m hurdler Sacha Zhoye.

"If I have some liquid courage then I think I'm better than him probably."

Duplantis was not keen to look too far ahead, with four weeks off training to come.

"I'm just like enjoying the present moment and I'm just living right now," he said. "I'm just going to enjoy, try to soak in the whole season and then go from here."

Diamond League: Armand Duplantis basks in 'best-ever' season, not rushing for more exhibitions

Ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah knows a thing or two about impressing anyone with his skillset, and new Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel is the latest to applaud him. Probably already a fan of Bumrah for his on-field antics, especially for his signature ‘Yorker’ delivery, Morkel admitted the Indian pace attack blew him away with their professionalism during his first training session with Team India in Chennai on Friday (Sep 13).

The BCCI appointed Morkel as the new bowling coach, with the former South African joining the camp ahead of the Bangladesh Tests starting September 19 in Chennai.&nbsp;

Having played and worked (in different capacities) with most Test-bound players, Morkel wishes to build on the camaraderie with the players to ensure a smooth and better working environment, eventually leading to success across formats.

“For me, it's just important to connect well with the guys. I've played with and against some of these players, and watched them in the IPL. Jasprit Bumrah-led India pace attack impresses new bowling coach Morne Morkel in training - WATCH

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta refused to rule captain Martin Odegaard out of Sunday's north London derby at Tottenham despite fears the key midfielder could be sidelined for weeks.

Odegaard suffered an ankle sprain on international duty with Norway earlier this week that looked set to also rule him out of tough away trips to Atalanta in the Champions League and a Premier League visit to Manchester City on September 22.

However, Arteta, who signed a new three-year deal on Thursday, said further tests were needed to discover the extent of the injury.

"We need some more tests," said the Spaniard at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"Let’s see the extent of the injury and how quickly we can get him back. Martin wants to be here every day but we have to wait and see. I leave that to the doctor. He’s willing and he wants to be present in every game. We need to make sure we know first how good he is or not.

"Players with 48 hours are always available. Let’s see what happens."

Arsenal are already depleted in midfield for the north London derby due to Declan Rice's suspension for a harsh red card in a 1-1 draw with Brighton before the international break.

New signing Mikel Merino is also currently sidelined after breaking a bone in his shoulder.

However, Arteta could unleash another fresh face in Raheem Sterling, who joined in the final hours of the transfer window on loan from Chelsea.

The former England international had been outcast by Blues boss Enzo Maresca due to Chelsea's bloated squad.

Sterling previously worked with Arteta during their time together at Manchester City and the Gunners boss believes the winger is fired up to silence his critics.

"He looks great. First of all because he has a big smile on his face, a lot of energy. He's at it and he wants to prove a point," added Arteta. "When someone has got that in his belly you sense it straight away. Obviously, I don't need to discover anything about his quality and what he can bring to the team."

Gabriel Jesus has returned to training in a timely fitness boost for Arteta, but Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt after picking up a calf injury on international duty.

PL: Mikel Arteta hopes injured Martin Odegaard returns sooner than expected as Arsenal gear up for Spurs trip

Former keeper-batter and Pakistan great Moin Khan has come out in support of his son, Azam Khan, saying the team management’s treatment of him during the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas completely shattered his confidence. Azam Khan was the number one pick in the XI in the lead-up to the tournament, and just after his only outing (during the game against the USA), the management dropped him.

Azam Khan, who kept wickets in his maiden T20 WC game versus the USA, got out on a first-ball duck in the first innings. Agreeing on his mediocre outing, which saw Pakistan losing the match in the super-over, Moin said regardless of that, management showed no faith in him as the youngster warmed benches for the remainder part of their campaign.

"I watched the entire World Cup and the matches leading up to it, and it seemed like Azam was the number one choice for wicketkeeping and batting," Moin told news agency&nbsp;PTI.&nbsp;

"Then suddenly, after just one match, the entire strategy was changed."

"Azam wasn't given a chance to keep wickets after one match and was dropped after getting out on the very first ball [against USA]. Any player can get out on the first ball, but here, the tradition of developing players that used to exist is no longer there. Whether it's the captain or the management, if they make such quick changes to players, how can we produce good players?" he continued.&nbsp;

After that game against the USA, Pakistan faced arch-rivals India next, losing that game too, but instead of Azam, seasoned campaigner Mohammad Rizwan kept wickets.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, two losses in two matches meant Pakistan had to win the remaining two to cruise ahead, and although they did beat Canada (far from convincing), their final game (against Ireland) getting washed out crushed their hopes, as they got ruled out of the tournament.

<h2>Azam working on his fitness</h2>

Down and shattered following the T20 WC episode, Azam Khan has returned to the training ground, working on his fitness, for which he suffered the wrath for a major part of his professional career, says his father.

"I'm not saying that all the blame lies with the team management and the captain; Azam has his own shortcomings too. He needs to make himself physically and mentally stronger and follow the fitness routines of other sportsmen.

"For the past month or so, I've noticed he's been working hard to improve his fitness with his trainer, Shehzar Mohammad, even taking him along to the Caribbean [Premier] League. I hope Azam has learned a lot from this experience,” he added.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is pleased that the club's long-awaited hearing into 115 charges brought by the Premier League is set to start on Monday.

City face 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The English champions stand accused of failing to provide accurate financial information between 2009 and 2018, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing and Guardiola has backed his superiors when pressed about the charges in the past.

"Start soon, and hopefully finish soon," Guardiola said of the hearing at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Brentford's trip to the Etihad. "I am looking forward to the decision.

"I'm happy it's starting on Monday. I know there will be more rumours, new specialists about the sentences.

"We're going to see. I know what people are looking forward to, what they expect. I know what I read for many, many years. Everybody is innocent until guilt is proven. So we'll see."

If found guilty on some or all of the charges, City face a severe points deduction and possibly even expulsion from the Premier League.

The hearing is set to last at least two months, with a decision not expected until 2025.

The Premier League brought the charges in February 2023 but there has been a lengthy wait for the case to proceed before an independent commission.

In the meantime, City have lifted two more Premier League titles and the club's first-ever Champions League last year.

Since a 2008 takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of the United Arab Emirates royal family, City have been transformed into the dominant force in English football.

They have won eight of the last 13 Premier League titles, including a record four consecutive league crowns in the past four seasons.

Pep Guardiola ‘happy’ that Manchester City’s hearing into 115 charges to begin on Monday

The Indian Cricket Board&nbsp;(BCCI) needs more time before announcing the revised IPL retention rules.

The decision, expected to be made public by the end of August, could be delayed until September end, around the 29th, when the Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place in Bengaluru. Although BCCI&nbsp;hasn't officially announced the decision release date, recent reports suggest that the information has been circulated&nbsp;among team owners and stakeholders.&nbsp;

According to Cricbuzz, there is no direct link between the AGM and IPL policies, but an earlier announcement wouldn't be surprising either. However, the growing belief in the IPL circuit suggests that BCCI might take at least ten days or two weeks to announce their decision. BCCI officials have hinted at the delay to franchise owners, who have been inquiring about the retention rules.&nbsp;

Regardless of when BCCI makes the announcement, all ten IPL teams have until November 15 this year to finalise their retention lists. The next mega IPL auction, scheduled for December this year, will feature the Right to Match (RTM) card option, which was absent in 2022.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanath revealed that the BCCI proposed considering retired players (who retired at least five years ago) in the uncapped category, potentially boosting MS Dhoni's chances of playing another season.&nbsp;

Dhoni announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020, and with five years completed, he could be retained as an uncapped player with a lower value if BCCI implements this policy.&nbsp;

However, allowing retired players to join the IPL auction might not significantly impact its budget. The BCCI will adjust the budget based on the number of players each team retains, enabling teams to determine player prices without assigning a specific value to each retained player.

Besides, some IPL teams have altered their leadership groups, with Rajasthan Royals appointing former captain and mentor Rahul Dravid as their new head coach. Delhi Capitals have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting, while IPL 2024 winners Kolkata Knight Riders are seeking a high-profile replacement for Gautam Gambhir as their new mentor.&nbsp;

Hundreds of mourners, including celebrities like David Beckham, gathered in the small Swedish town of Torsby on Friday as football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was laid to rest in his hometown.

Eriksson, who during a long career most notably became the first foreigner to coach England, died in late August at the age of 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Swede, who guided England to World Cup quarter-finals in 2002 and 2006, announced in February 2023 he was stepping back from public life due to "health issues".

His funeral service at the Fryksande church in Torsby in the western region of Varmland where the internationally renowned coach grew up began at 10:00 am (0800 GMT) on Friday.

A giant screen and benches were set up outside the church, showing the funeral live for local residents and other fans.

Among the 600 guests present inside the church were Beckham, who was a pivotal figure in Eriksson's England team, and another former England boss Roy Hodgson, Eriksson's family and his former partner Nancy Dell'Olio.

"Despite his illness, Sven-Goran's last days were full of life. He received tributes from all over the world. Many of you carry his commitment as a coach in your hearts," pastor Ingela Alvskog said in her eulogy.

"So much joy, so much laughter. In the midst of grief, there is room for gratitude," she continued.

Outside the church, several hundred people gathered, some dressed in their Sunday best while carrying roses in their hands.

"Sven-Goran loved routine and discipline. But he was also a great bon vivant who enjoyed good food, drink and travelling in first-class," added the pastor, who was close to "Svennis" -- as he is commonly called in Sweden -- and his family.

Eriksson had requested that the ceremony be a joyful event and should include New Orleans jazz.

In the autumn of his life, Eriksson, born on 5 February 1948 in Sunne, could already see time slipping away.

Eriksson wrote in a column for the newspaper The Telegraph that was published after his death that his life as football manager had "been a dream."

"Do not give up, is my message for life. And please don’t forget this: life is always, always to be celebrated," Eriksson wrote.

New Zealand’s first-ever Test against Afghanistan resulted in a washout, with head coach Gary Stead labelling it as a ‘lost opportunity’ in preparing for the upcoming Sri Lanka and India Test series. Stead admitted he, alongside the group, is ‘frustrated’ with the game’s outcome despite it not affecting their World Test Championship (WTC) final chances.&nbsp;

New Zealand is scheduled to play six Tests in Asia, starting with one against Afghanistan, two against Sri Lanka and three against India, respectively. With this game washed out without a ball being bowled, the Kiwis will fly to the Island Nation for the first Test beginning Sep 18 in Galle.

"The most disappointing part for us is that we lost the opportunity to be match-hardened and match-ready when we go into our Test match [against Sri Lanka] next week," Stead said at the post-match press conference.&nbsp;

"The guys are really disappointed. It was an opportunity to play Afghanistan. It doesn't come around that often.

"They have some unique bowlers - it's always good to get your head around how you face them. The way they play is a little bit different to other countries. It's always learning what you can do when you get in those match situations,” he continued.

<h2>‘Test cricket is dear to us’</h2>

With New Zealand cricketers vouching for Test cricket being dearest to them, Stead said despite this game not falling under the current WTC Cycle, they were looking forward to five-day cricket against Afghanistan, with a beautiful-looking pitch on offer.&nbsp;

“We were frustrated,” Stead continued.

“We have come here to play cricket and play a Test match, and as Jonathan [Trott, Afghanistan head coach] said, Test cricket, certainly to our group of players that is here, that's very, very dear to their hearts and every Test you get to play in is a big one.

"So, regardless of whether it has World Test Championship points or not, that opportunity to get out there for five days, it looked a great surface. The whole block looked fantastic, so it would have been a great match of Test cricket,” he added.

<h3>Ready for Galle challenge</h3>

For New Zealand to qualify for the WTC Final, they need to win their remaining matches in the ongoing cycle, with five out of six Tests to be played in Asia.&nbsp;
Speaking of the conditions in Galle, Stead said the pitches on offer will be different than the ones in India, and they are ready to roll on them.

"The World Test Championship is alive and well, and we're currently in third place, and we want to make the finals again," he said. "We've been there once in the past, and we are desperate to get there again. So every test match we play will be an important one.

"The conditions that we face in Galle will be, I'm sure, different to Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai when we come back here again. So, it's still about adapting to the different surfaces where I'm learning from those. But also banking the knowledge you have created in the past even though it's been a couple of [sessions of] trainings out there, we'd still bank on what we've learnt on those sort of pitches,” he concluded.

New Zealand’s first-ever Test against Afghanistan resulted in a washout, with head coach Gary Stead labelling it as a ‘lost opportunity’ in preparing for the upcoming Sri Lanka and India Test series. Stead admitted he, alongside the group, is ‘frustrated’ with the game’s outcome despite it not affecting their World Test Championship (WTC) final chances. <h2>An Ode to the Great Man</h2>

Shane Warne made his international debut against India during the 1992 Sydney Test. Though he picked just one wicket across two innings during that game, Warner ended up with 708 Test wickets – second-most by any bowler in Tests.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, considering how fast bowling dictated terms during those eras, Warne’s leg-spin surprised cricket fans, who enjoyed watching him destroy the opposition at will for the next 15 years.&nbsp;

Warne’s emergence on the international stage brought the onus back on spin, and alongside Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan – Test cricket's highest wicket-taker (800), both revolutionised spin bowling.&nbsp;

Of all the bowlers to ever grace this game, Warne is the only one to bowl two ‘Ball of the Century’ – to former England captains Mike Gatting and Andrew Strauss, respectively. While the one to Gatting came during the 1993 Manchester Test, Warne’s second ‘Ball of the Century’ to Strauss came during the famous 2005 Ashes Test series – dubbed by many as the greatest Test series since 2000.

Shane Warne’s Birthday: Daughter Brooke pens heartfelt note, sends ‘heavenly greetings’ to late father

Cristiano Ronaldo says Erik ten Hag's attitude is too negative, urging the Manchester United manager to target the Premier League title even though the club need to "rebuild from the bottom".

The Portugal star, who now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, fell out with Ten Hag before his second spell at Old Trafford ended late in 2022.

Ronaldo believes his former club needs sweeping changes but that Ten Hag should not rule out winning major trophies in the meantime.

The Dutchman has said he is "quite confident" of claiming more silverware this campaign after lifting the League Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

But he said in July his team are a "long way away" from being ready to win the Premier League, which they have not won since Alex Ferguson's final season in charge in 2013.

"Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion," Ronaldo said in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, due to be released on Thursday. "The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try."

United upset Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but they endured their worst Premier League campaign last term, finishing eighth, and the 20-time English champions have lost two of their opening three matches this season.

"This club needs time to rebuild because it's still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change," Ronaldo said. "They understand that. This is the only way. This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything. The owners of the club."

<h2>'Bright future'</h2>

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe completed his purchase of a minority stake in the club in February and has since overseen major changes in the club hierarchy after taking control of football operations.

"I believe that the future will be bright," said Ronaldo. "I believe, but they don't depend only on the talents. It's more than that. It's all club, all, not only players, club, everything as a unit, united.

"They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible."

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who spent six seasons with United earlier in his career, scored 27 goals in 54 appearances during his second spell at Old Trafford after signing from Juventus in 2021.

Following his exit just over a year later, he claimed he felt "betrayed", while saying of Ten Hag: "I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me."

However, the 39-year-old said he still loves the club.

"I'm not happy the way it all happened but, in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it's done, already done," he said. "To prove that I'm right or wrong, this is not my issue any more. I say what I have to say and for me it's done."

He added: "I love that club. I'm not that kind of guy that forgot the past."

India's para-javelin thrower Navdeep Singh presented a cap to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the interaction, PM Modi also signed his kit. The Indian contingent of the Paris Paralympics met PM Modi at his residence in the national capital on Thursday. While interacting with PM Modi, Navdeep presented him with a cap.

PM Modi sat down as Navdeep gently put the cap on PM Modi's head. He went on to ask PM Modi to sign the left side of his jacket, which is his throwing arm as well. PM Modi humbly agreed and signed an autograph on his left arm. "A very touching gesture by my friend and India's pride, Navdeep Singh," PM Modi captioned the video on Instagram.

During the interaction, PM Modi also asked Navdeep about the video that went viral following his triumph, "Have you seen your video or not. How do you perform with such aggression."

To which, Navdeep replied, "Last time (Tokyo Paralympics), I had finished fourth. Before leaving for Paris, I had promised you, so the promise has been fulfilled."

In the men's javelin F41 event, Navdeep's silver medal was upgraded to gold after the initial winner, Islamic Republic of Iran's Sadegh Beit Sayah, got disqualified from the final. Navdeep had initially finished second with a season-best throw of 47.32m, while Sadegh, before the disqualification, stood at the top with a Paralympic record of 47.64m. In the jam-packed Stade de France, it was a redemption arc for Navdeep after he finished fourth in Tokyo.

'Very touching gesture': Gold medallist Navdeep Singh presents cap to PM Narendra Modi

Spain's Jon Rahm wants to play three European golf events before the end of the year to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility, but said Wednesday he won't pay fines levied by the DP World Tour over his LIV golf participation. The two-time major winner, who joined LIV Golf last December, is facing a deadline to pay the fines imposed by the DP World Tour on golfers who failed to obtain releases to play in the Saudi-backed league events that conflict with tour events.

As he prepared for the LIV Golf tournament in Chicago this week, Rahm said he hoped to play two events in his homeland -- the Spanish Open and the Andalucia Masters -- and in the Dunhill Links Championship.

But he acknowledged that he wasn't sure if he would be allowed to tee it up. "We entered a long time ago,” Rahm said. “Whether they let me play or not is a different thing. I’m not a big fan of the fines. I think I’ve been outspoken about that. "I don't intend to pay the fines and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen," he added.

"I've said many times, I don't go to the Spanish Open for the glory or anything else. I think it's my duty to Spanish golf to be there and I also want to play in Sotogrande."

There is an apparent avenue for Rahm to play, if he appeals the sanctions. LIV Golf's Tyrrell Hatton competed at the British Masters after appealing his sanctions, with the penalties to be resolved at a later date.

One person likely watching the situation closely is Luke Donald, who will captain Europe in next year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Rahm was one of Europe's star performers in their victory over the United States last year in Rome in the most recent edition of the biennial match play showdown.
