RF Athletics High Performance Centre’s (HPC) athletes sparkled at the SAFF Junior Athletics Championships in Chennai by winning five medals at the competition. DM Jayaram starred by winning a brace of medals, a bronze in the men’s 100 m event and a silver in the men’s 4x100 m relay event, where he was joined by fellow Odisha-RF HPC athlete Mahendra Santa.

Sabita Toppo claimed silver in the women’s 100 m hurdles event in an eye-catching display and Laxmipriya Kisan also won silver in the women’s 800 m event.

Speaking about the performance, Martin Owens, Head Coach, Odisha-RF HPC said, “The SAFF Junior Athletics Championships was a really good meet and a really good opportunity for some young athletes to represent India for the first time. From our point of view, Jayaram ran exceptionally well. He was up against two very high-quality Sri Lankan sprinters, who like Jayaram had taken part in the Junior World Championships. He ran his best race of the season so far, so I was very pleased with his effort.

“Jayaram and Mahendra also ran really well in the 4x100 m relay team. Mahendra is still recovering from dengue, and he’ll run even better in the future. Laxmi was a big positive, as she only got called up at the last minute. She had a short turnaround but ran really well. The best performance from our contingent for me was Sabita’s as she ran under 14&nbsp;s for the first time. When she is in tip top condition, she does very well. Really proud of the team here in Odisha for preparing the athletes so well."

The Odisha-RF HPC, is a strong collaborative effort of the Odisha Government and Reliance Foundation, with the aim to improve the standard of athletics across the state and produce home-grown athletes who can achieve both national and international success.

Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach brought plenty of expectations. Though the one he replaced, Rahul Dravid, helped India end the ICC trophy drought after 11 years by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas, Gambhir helping KKR win IPL 2024 was seen as a&nbsp;huge&nbsp;milestone.

Two months into his new role, Gambhir oversaw India win the T20I series win against Sri Lanka, but they lost the One-Dayers, with his latest assignment being the ongoing Test series with Bangladesh at home.&nbsp;

Dravid and Gambhir have played together for several years, and having known GG from closed quarters, Dravid sounded pleased with Gautam’s appointment. Although he admitted every coach would have his share of success and failures, Dravid backed Gambhir to taste success only for what he brings. Rahul said the Indian Team would benefit hugely under GG’s leadership.

They reached three finals and one semi-final of three ICC events during his tutelage, with their only success coming in the last one (T20 WC) against South Africa in June earlier this year.

India also won the Border-Gavaskar series and the five-match Test series under Dravid at home, with winning the 2023 Asia Cup Final against Sri Lanka being the highlight.&nbsp;

Team India will play 10 Tests until January next year, with Gambhir’s toughest assignment being the away five-match Test series against Australia starting November 22.&nbsp;

“Always a special feeling to play in front of the home crowd,” Ashwin said.

“This is a ground I completely love to play cricket in. It's given me a lot of wonderful memories. The last time I got a hundred, you were the coach Ravi bhai (Ravi Shastri). It does feel special.”&nbsp;

“Worked on a few things, and on a surface like this with a bit of spice, if you're going after the ball, might as well go after it really hard like Rishabh does. The red soil pitch allows you to play a few shots if you are willing to just get in line and give it a bit of a tonk when there's width,” Ashwin continued.

India batted first after winning the toss, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant returning to the side after a long hiatus. Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud struck gold up front, dismissing four out of the top five batters, starting with Rohit Sharma on just six.

He got Shubman Gill caught behind on a duck before picking his biggest wicket in Tests – Virat Kohli, caught behind on six. Although Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 62 runs for the fourth wicket, Hasan returned to remove Pant on 39, who struggled to get going on this pitch that assisted seamers earlier.&nbsp;

Lanky youngster Nahid Rana dismissed Jaiswal on 56 before Mehidy Hasan Miraz got rid of KL Rahul on 16 to put India’s back against the wall.

<h2>Jadeja, Ashwin got India back on track</h2>

Staring at a low first-inning total, all-rounders Ashwin and Jadeja got the hosts back on track with counter-attacking cricket. While Jadeja deployed a defensive approach, Ashwin took the attack to the opposition from the word go.

In no time, he got past his 50 and by the end of the day, Ashwin completed his sixth Test hundred, putting India in the driver’s seat.

Illness and injuries have hit the Australian camp ahead of the first ODI against England in Trent Bridge on Thursday (Sep 19), as the star trio of Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are doubtful for the series opener.&nbsp;

A virus has swept through the visitor’s dugout, with T20I captain Mitchell Marsh missing the second T20I with a similar illness. Travis Head, who led the side in Marsh’s absence, wasn’t 100 per cent either but played through, per a report in Cricket Australia.

Starc and Maxwell joined the training camp before the first One-Dayer and trained in the nets before catching the virus. With keeper-batter Josh Inglis and opener Jake Fraser-McGurk battling injuries, Australia’s options are reduced drastically within their 17-man squad.

Inglis, who enjoyed limited outings on this UK Tour thus far, hasn’t kept wickets in the nets as he recovers from quad soreness; that, however, opened doors for Alex Carey, who will play his first ODI since getting dropped during the 2023 World Cup.

On the other hand, McGurk, who scored his maiden fifty in the first T20I and last appeared in the second game that the Aussies lost by three wickets, is also nursing a sore hamstring. Following passing the fitness test on Tuesday, the rookie batter batted for a little while in the nets.&nbsp;

<h2>Lack of first-team bowlers</h2>

With regular ODI Captain Pat Cummins rested for the entire England series and Starc and Hazlewood almost confirmed to miss out on the playing XI, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis will play the first One-Dayer; all-rounders Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie will make up for the rest of the bowlers.

Matthew Short, who pressed his case as David Warner’s replacement in the white-ball squad, might start ahead of Maxwell in the Trent Bridge ODI.

With Marsh and Head recovering from the illness, both might start, while the Test pair of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will come into the XI.&nbsp;

"It's certainly a busy schedule, there will be times where we may have to manage guys through," Marsh said at a pre-series press conference before the extent of sickness was fully known. "We'll manage that as best we can and make sure we're fielding teams to win this series."

D Gukesh made headlines for his watchful yet impactful approach despite the marquee match between him and Ding Liren not taking place as China rested the world champion in the crucial tie. In his place, Wei Yi appeared against his Indian opponent, with the World Championship challenger prevailing, getting his chance after over 70 moves.&nbsp;

This win was vital for India as they beat China after the three other matches - Yangyi Yu vs Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi vs Bu Xiangzhi, and Wang Yue vs GM Pentala Harikrishna ended in draws.

Although winning their matches by a single win and opting for draws by resting their players have been the Chinese team’s tactics in this Olympiad, India’s been the opposite, which is to steamroll the opposition by playing for the win on every board.

Considering Gukesh’s form in this Olympiad has been imperious, winning four games before drawing the sixth round against Hungary’s Richard Rapport, to rest the world champion Ding Liren is an understandable call by China.

Liren, however, has had a forgettable Olympiad, losing his previous game with white pieces against Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem. Besides, the Chinese international hasn’t won a single game this time, drawing four before going down in the previous tie.&nbsp;

Liren also admitted that Gukesh is a favourite heading into the World Championship.

“I can see my opponent (Gukesh) playing extremely well in this tournament. Maybe, he is a favourite in the World Championship Match. He also has a higher rating than me. I have dropped a lot since last year, but I will fight my best to try to overcome the rating difference,” Ding Liren said while speaking with FIDE’s social media team earlier.

<h2>Viswanathan Anand unsurprised</h2>

Chess legend Viswanathan Anand also shared his thoughts on China resting Ding instead of making him available against India’s Gukesh.

“Everybody suspected that it could happen. For me, it was not clear if he should duck this one or play. But only he knows how he feels. After losing with white against Liem, he must be slightly annoyed. Maybe he just took the day off. Again, Wei Yi is no slouch by any measure. They can easily field Wei Yi,” Anand said on the ChessBase India broadcast as quoted by The Indian Express.

“If you look at momentum, stats and all, Gukesh is certainly playing much better. But think about it this way, Ding is still working hard. He’s getting through his bad form. I think Gukesh should be happy with how he’s playing. But he still has a match to play,” he added.&nbsp;

English county side Essex have been fined £100,000 ($131,000) after admitting a failure to address "systemic" racist language and conduct at the cricket club between 2001 and 2010.

Half of Essex's fine is suspended for two years and the county have also been cautioned over their future conduct after being reprimanded by the Cricket Regulator (CR).

The CR panel said the length of time covered by the charge and the systemic use of racist and discriminatory language suggested a culture that was "embedded" across most levels of the club.

The panel added: "This conduct continued without meaningful challenge from either Essex's management or other senior playing members of the club even when it was brought to their attention."

The panel accepted in mitigation Essex's early admission of the charge and the punishments handed to individuals arising from the separate independent review commissioned by the club.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)'s own investigation had been prompted by allegations of racism made by former players Jahid Ali, Maurice Chambers and Zoheb Sharif.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould said: "Racism has no place in our sport. I'm appalled by what those who experienced racism at Essex have been through, and the way this behaviour could become normalised.

"It is vital that as a sport we listen and learn from their experiences, and ensure that no one suffers like that again.

"I welcome the action Essex has taken in recent years to address these issues and become a more inclusive club, and the commitment it has shown to make further progress."

Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk was handcuffed at a Polish airport after he became "upset" when his travelling companion was denied boarding for disruptive behaviour, the airline and border guards said Wednesday.

World heavyweight champion Usyk described the incident late Tuesday as a "misunderstanding" while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was "disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen".

The 37-year-old boxer had been planning to fly from Krakow airport to Thessaloniki in Greece along with another man on a flight Tuesday operated by Polish airline Buzz, a subsidiary of Ryanair.

"The passenger travelling with Mr Usyk was correctly refused boarding... by the airport gate agent at Krakow Airport due to his disruptive behaviour," Ryanair said in a statement to AFP on Wednesday.

"Mr Usyk was not refused boarding, however (he) chose not to board," the airline said, adding that the gate agent later called for assistance from airport police.

The two men "were somewhat upset. They didn't want to leave the departure gate. So in accordance with the procedure, our officers intervened," local border guard spokesman Jacek Michalowski told AFP.&nbsp;

"They were issued a warning and released," he said, denying that they had been detained.

Video footage circulating on social media showed officers walking a handcuffed Usyk through the airport.

"As you saw online, one of these people was handcuffed, but that was only for preventative reasons because they were upset and we needed to bring them to the room in peace," Michalowski said.

Usyk on Tuesday tweeted that "a misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved".

Zelensky said Tuesday he spoke with Usyk on the phone after the incident.&nbsp;

"I was disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen and champion," Zelensky added on X.

"Now, everything is fine, our champion has been released, and he is no longer being detained."

Usyk became boxing's first four-belt undisputed heavyweight world champion in May, when he won against Britain's Tyson Fury in Riyadh.

Ukraine boxer Oleksandr Usyk handcuffed at Poland airport, Zelensky criticises incident

After thrashing South Korea in the semifinals on Monday (Sep 16), India will now lock horns with China in the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 final on Tuesday (Sep 17). The Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian hockey team will enter the mega finale as firm favourites and aim to win their fifth Champions Trophy title. Meanwhile, the Chinese team -- who stunned Pakistan 2-0 in their semifinal clash -- will look to shock India and clinch their second title in the tournament's history, after the 2013 edition.

Talking about India, they are unbeaten in the tournament after&nbsp;thrashing&nbsp;China 3-0, Japan 5-1, Malaysia 8-1 and Korea 3-1 in the group stage before once again beating Korea 4-1 in the semifinal encounter. Meanwhile, China&nbsp;lost to India (3-0), Korea (3-2) and Pakistan (5-1) and only beat Malaysia (4-2) and Japan (2-0) to enter the semifinal, where they went past the Men in Green (2-0 via shootout) to book a place in the final.&nbsp;

It will be a shocking result if India lose to hosts China, however, they will not like to take their opposition for granted. The likes of&nbsp;Uttam Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh are coming into this game on the back of goals in the semifinal whereas the defence has done well&nbsp;in the post-PR Sreejesh era. Goalkeepers Krishan Pathak and Suraj Karkera are also brilliant. Thus, India are on the cusp of winning their fifth title on Tuesday.

Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: India beat South Korea in semis, to face China in final

Spain's Jon Rahm fired four birdies -- including a 12-footer at the 17th -- to win LIV Golf Chicago on Sunday and clinch the Saudi-backed circuit's individual season title worth $18 million.

The two-time major winner from Spain, who made the jump to the breakaway league last December, captured his second victory in the past three events, sandwiched around a runner-up finish to Brooks Koepka in a playoff at LIV Golf Greenbrier in August.

Rahm, who hasn't finished outside the top 10 in 11 events, arrived at Bolingbrook Golf Course near Chicago this week with Joaquin Niemann -- a two-time winner this season -- his only rival for the season title.

After a six-under-par second round on Saturday, Rahm took a one-shot lead over compatriot Sergio Garcia into the final round, with Niemann three adrift and needing to finish in front of Rahm to bag the individual champion's bonus.

Rahm had birdies at the third, sixth and 10th holes, and after letting a couple of birdie chances go begging, he sealed it with his birdie at 17, carding a four-under final round for a 54-hole total of 11-under par.

"I woke up really nervous today," Rahm said. "I wanted to do a really good show and get it over the line. Just really happy I played as good as I did.

"To go bogey-free on the weekend, one bogey all tournament, it's quite spectacular," he said. "I'm very proud of the putt on 17, which made 18 a lot, a lot, easier."

In addition to his $18 million champion's bonus he bagged $4 million for the tournament win.

He finished three shots better than Niemann, whose four-under final gave him an eight-under total that left him tied for second with Garcia.

The LIV season concludes next week with the team championship in Dallas.

After that, Rahm has his sights set on playing a trio of DP World Tour events to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility.

He said Wednesday he was unwilling to pay the fines levied by the DP World Tour on golfers who fail to obtain releases to play in LIV events that conflict with tour tournaments.

Rahm has reportedly appealed the fines, and as that process plays out would be eligible to tee up at the Spanish Open later this month.

He also wants to play the Andalucia Masters and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Mikel Arteta lauds Arsenal in ‘ugly’ win over rivals Spurs in Premier League

Barcelona's Lamine Yamal struck twice in the first half to help deliver a commanding 4-1 win at Girona on Sunday that extended their perfect start to the LaLiga season with a fifth consecutive win.

Yamal gave Barca a two-goal lead with strikes in the 30th and 37th minutes while Dani Olmo extended their advantage right after the break with a first-time effort from close range.

Pedri scored the fourth with a tap-in in the 64th minute while Girona substitute Cristhian Stuani netted a consolation goal in the 80th, six minutes before Barca were reduced to 10 men when forward Ferran Torres was given a straight red card for a nasty studs-up challenge on Yaser Asprilla.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona top the LaLiga standings with 15 points, four ahead of Real Madrid and Villarreal. Girona are seventh on seven points.

"It was clear for us that we had to start the season well," Pedri told Movistar Plus. "Coach Flick insisted with us about that in the close season, that from the very first moment we had to push hard because that's how you win leagues, distancing ourselves from our rivals from the start."

It was another dominant performance by Flick's impressive Barcelona who outplayed Girona throughout the match and could have won by a wider margin.

Girona looked overwhelmed in the face of Barca's relentless high-press which caused the home side's defenders to make several mistakes, gifting Barca opportunities.

David Lopez made a schoolboy error when he was pressured by teenager Yamal who stole the ball cleanly on the edge of the box before firing an unstoppable strike past the goalkeeper.

Barca kept pushing and Yamal extended their lead, slotting home a rebound from a free kick just inside the post.

Barca were commanding and working like a well oiled machine, frustrating almost every Girona effort to counter and not allowing the opposition to break the lines with forward passes into pockets of space.

They extended their lead a minute after the break when Jules Kounde delivered a long pass through that Olmo took in his stride, bursting into the box before unleashing a bullet strike past the goalkeeper.

Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made a string of saves to deny efforts by Robert Lewandowski and Yamal but there was little he could do to stop Pedri from scoring the fourth.

Substitute Marc Casado fired a pass through the middle that found Pedri unmarked as he ghosted behind the defence before running past the goalkeeper and tapping the ball into the empty net.

Stuani's close-range finish and Torres's red-card didn't change the script and Barca could have scored another with Casado missing a sitter in added time.

Barca will now turn their attention to the Champions League as they prepare to visit Monaco on Thursday.

It was another dominant performance by Flick's impressive Barcelona who outplayed Girona throughout the match and could have won by a wider margin. ALSO READ: Ajax fans riot in Amsterdam after matches get postponed due to police strikes Girona looked overwhelmed in the face of Barca's relentless high-press which caused the home side's defenders to make several mistakes, gifting Barca opportunities. La Liga 2024/25: Superstar Yamal continues golden run with brace in Barcelona’s win at Girona

Ace Australia spinner Nathan Lyon admits taking six to seven years to acknowledge the pressure he felt playing under the shadow of the late Shane Warne, calling it a privilege. Lyon, 36, has picked up 530 Test wickets but still feels he is playing under Warnie’s shadow, someone he regards the ‘greatest ever to play the game’.

Four years after Warne announced his retirement in 2007, Lyon made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Galle, picking up Kumar Sangakkara on the first ball of his international career. 13 years and 128 Tests later, he stands tall as the seventh-highest Test wicket-taker, and third among top ten after Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563).

"I still feel in the shadow of Shane Warne now, and I'm 129 Test matches in with 530 wickets. The thing is, I'm happy with that, and I'm comfortable with that now. A lot of us felt the pressure of Shane Warne's shadow, and it probably took me a good five, six, or seven years to understand that pressure is a privilege. And if you've got pressure, you're ok, you're doing ok; enjoy it," Lyon said in a chat with Sky Sports Cricket, as per news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, Warne, who would have turned 55 a few days ago, was the greatest bowler, let alone a spinner, the game has seen, something Lyon also echoes.&nbsp;

In an overly decorated on-field career, which spanned 15 years (1992 to 2007), Warne picked over 700 Test wickets, including bowling two ‘ball of the centuries’ – both to former England captains Mike Gatting and Andrew Strauss, respectively.

Though Lyon is closing in on surpassing McGrath to become Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, chasing Warne’s record looks like a far-fetched dream. He, however, wishes to make Warne, who passed away shockingly in March 2022, and his family proud with his on-field exploits.&nbsp;

"I'm never going to be able to do what Warnie did. Warnie's once-in-a-generation, he's the greatest to play the game in my opinion, and all I want to do is make my family proud, and make Shane Warne proud, and just go out there and compete," Lyon added.

<h2>Lyon ready for India challenge</h2>

With the cricket world gearing up for a massive series at the end of this year – India’s tour of Australia beginning mid-November – Lyon aims to end India’s honeymoon run Down Under.&nbsp;

Having suffered twin series defeats in 2018-19 and 2020-21, Australia is hungry to turn the tables and win the home Border-Gavaskar series.&nbsp;

‘Warne is the greatest ever, to play under his shadow is privilege,’ says veteran spinner Nathan Lyon

Indian cricket has thrived on superstars emerging from ground zero, with batting mainstays like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, among others, being the pioneers. Though a few all-rounders and a handful of bowlers have attained legendary status, batters hold the highest value in this batsman-dominant country.

However, with India touring Australia for five Tests in the upcoming winters, all eyes will be on the young guns. The Indian Test batting line-up is undergoing transition, with veterans like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane out of the setup and youngsters vying to fill up their spots.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upon being asked the Australian cricketers about their thoughts on who could headline Team India’s batting in times to come, several players picked openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as their top choices.&nbsp;

Though the rookie left-hander Jaiswal won the most votes, those who played against Gill in the previous series Down Under picked him, knowing his mettle. The right-handed batter plays at number three in Tests, with Jaiswal rocking at the top order alongside Captain Rohit Sharma.

Gill made his Test debut during India’s last tour of Australia in 2020-21, which they won, and Jaiswal emerged in the Test arena during the home series against England earlier this year. The attacking opener impressed one and all with his exploits throughout, registering a mammoth 712 runs in five Tests, including two tons, with Gill scoring as many.

Who will headline Team India's batting in coming years? Australian stars name their picks

After imposing archaic laws on women in Afghanistan, the Taliban is now looking forward to banning cricket, as per the latest reports.&nbsp;

In the world of cricket, Afghanistan has been one of the fastest-growing teams. In the T20 World Cup matches in June, the team made it to the semi-finals of an ICC event for the first time. The Afghan fans celebrated the win with fanfare on the streets of Kabul. The underdog story of Afghanistan-from being a crisis-hit country to winning matches against teams like Pakistan and Australia- has been a delightful journey to watch.

But if the latest reports are found to be true, this is bad news for all cricket fans around the world.

Taliban could now ban all forms of cricket in Afghanistan: Reports

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is known for wearing his heart on his sleeves. Besides his accolades as a top-order batter, where he won two World Cups (T20 and ODI), Gambhir was also famous for his well-documented on-field altercations.

However, his former Delhi teammate and now a well-renowned commentator, Aakash Chopra, revealed an instance when Gambhir got into an altercation with a truck driver early into his career, leading to Gambhir climbing up the truck and grabbing his collar.

In a recent podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Aakash recalled this one intriguing anecdote where Gambhir took matters into his own hands and went after a truck driver after he abused him.

Starting by calling him passionate about what he does, Aakash soon jumped onto revealing what happened on the Delhi roads one day when Gambhir lost his cool.

"Passionate guy. Very hardworking when it comes to his craft. A bit serious but scored a lot of runs. He always wore his heart on the sleeve. Temperament-wise, he can be very short-fused. But everyone has a different character.

"Gautam is someone who once fought with a truck driver in Delhi. He got out of his car and climbed the truck to grab the collar of the driver because he made a wrong turn and was abusing. I was like, ‘Gauti, what are you doing?’ So that's made him Gautam," Chopra said.&nbsp;

Although both have maintained peace with that since Gambhir recently replaced Rahul Dravid as India’s new head coach. He began his three-and-a-half-year stint with the away Sri Lanka series, where India won the T20Is but lost the ODIs for the first time since 1997.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Gautam is overseeing the Indian Test squad, assembled in Chennai, the venue for the first Test against Bangladesh starting September 19. Kanpur will cap off the two-match Test series with the second Test beginning September 27.&nbsp;

Batter Harry Brook will lead England for the first time during the five-match Australia ODIs, with regular captain Jos Buttler ruled out of the remainder of the home summer with the calf injury he suffered in July. Buttler’s injury meant all-rounder Liam Livingstone got a recall to the One-day side following his star showing in the recently concluded T20I series. Liam top-scored in two contested matches with 124 runs and was also the highest wicket-taker (5).

England’s squad for Australia ODIs –&nbsp;Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley and John Turner.

The management has been grooming Brook to lead England across formats for some time now. Having led their Under-19 side during the 2018 World Cup before, Brook captained Yorkshire in four matches during the 2022 T20 Blast and led Northern Superchargers in the Hundred earlier this year, where he won five out of six games.

The ECB named Brook England’s Test vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series, which the hosts won 2-1.&nbsp;

Though the management rested the star batter for Australia T20Is with Phil Salt leading in Buttler’s absence, Brook returned to the ODI setup as the new skipper.

Buttler, who watched Brook grow into a first-team player, wishes him good luck in his first assignment as England captain.&nbsp;

“It's going to be a great opportunity for Brooky to be the captain,” Buttler said.&nbsp;

“He is a pretty laid-back character, but I think he has everything in line. He is a really good thinker about it... I'm sure he'll do that his own way, and he'll get a feel for those moments [in games].&nbsp;

England’s squad for Australia ODIs – Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley and John Turner. The ECB named Brook England’s Test vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series, which the hosts won 2-1. Buttler, who watched Brook grow into a first-team player, wishes him good luck in his first assignment as England captain. “It's going to be a great opportunity for Brooky to be the captain,” Buttler said. “He is a pretty laid-back character, but I think he has everything in line. He is a really good thinker about it... I'm sure he'll do that his own way, and he'll get a feel for those moments [in games]. “That's what we're encouraging everyone as a side - whether that's a player or a captain - is to try and identify those moments that you think can go a long way to you winning the game and going for it and committing to it,” he continued. Ace spinner Ravi Ashwin has labelled India’s premier bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, the ‘most valuable Indian cricketer’ right now. Ashwin said Bumrah deserves all the praise and that the fans should celebrate him more. Chennai-born Ashwin also reflected on how the city loves treating bowlers, with Bumrah receiving a mighty ‘Rajni style’ welcome during an event he attended here recently.

“We Chennai people appreciate bowlers a lot. He was here for an event as a chief guest 4-5 days ago. We gave him a Rajni treatment. We (Chennai people) treat bowlers very nicely. He should be treated as a champion. I don’t want to name, but Jasprit Bumrah is the most valuable Indian cricketer right now," Ashwin said while speaking with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

Bumrah broke onto the international scene in 2016 and has been on a steep rise since. The opening bowler made a name for himself for bowling ‘pinpoint Yorkers’, but soon after, he showed the world that he’s more than that. More so for his unplayable spells with both the new and the old ball, Bumrah is a threat even for the best batters around.

Meanwhile, Bumrah was instrumental in helping India taste success across formats since his debut and played a handy role in ending India’s trophy drought with his maiden ICC title (T20 World Cup in the Americas in June this year).&nbsp;

He won the Player of the Tournament award for his 15 wickets in eight games, including picking two crucial ones against South Africa in the final.

<h2>‘It will never change’</h2>

Known to put up an honest yet brave face in the media, Ashwin said India will continue to remain a batsman-dominated country, but he is happy for Bumrah, who garnered as much attention and importance as batters in the Indian Team.

Calling Bumrah a ‘once-in-a-generation’ bowler, Ashwin said, “India has always been the country that is a batsman-dominated country, and it’s never going to change. But I am so glad and happy that we are celebrating Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler. We should celebrate him even more.”

Meanwhile, both Ashwin and Bumrah are part of Team India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai. The two-match Test series will conclude with the second game in Kanpur on September 27.&nbsp;

India and Bangladesh will face off in three T20Is beginning October 7.&nbsp;

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said his side were not dominant enough to deserve a 2-0 win at Real Sociedad secured with second-half penalties by Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe.

However, Ancelotti praised his players' resilience and was proud of how they were able to endure the home side's pressure and claim three valuable points.

"It was a complicated match. We didn't deserve to win, because Real Sociedad pushed us really hard," he told a press conference. "We held on and suffered, showed character and a lot of commitment. I value that a lot because it's not easy to find commitment in a team with so much talent and quality and today we did it.

"I leave very satisfied and then we have to be self-critical in order to improve. It's a great opportunity for us to assess what we didn't do well, but with three more points in the table."

Real remain second but now have 11 points, one behind Barcelona who visit fifth-placed Girona on Sunday.

Ancelotti acknowledged his side were struggling with fatigue and poor form, but said it was to be expected due to a busy calendar and coming off the back of the international break.

The Italian said he saw improvement in Mbappe's performance as the France captain settles in at his new club, having scored his third goal for Real on Saturday.

"We can talk about all the problems in the world with this match, but the important thing was to get out with a win," added Ancelotti, who was without midfielders Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos and Aurelien Tchouameni.

"We have to take into account that we are not at 100 percent. It's normal, we don't have four midfielders who are injured. I value a lot the work of those who have played.

"I see Mbappe fresher, more active. He's very dangerous and combines well with Vinicius and the other forwards. He is improving a lot. I liked his game a lot."

Real will now turn their attention to the Champions League title defence starting on Tuesday when they host Stuttgart.

La Liga: Carlo Ancelotti unsatisfied with Real Madrid’s result at Sociedad, says ‘we didn’t deserve to win’

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot suffered his first setback as his side surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday but Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the season.

Forest had not tasted victory at Anfield since 1969 but Callum Hudson-Odoi's 72nd minute curler beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson secured the three points as Nuno Espirito Santo's side moved into the Premier League's top five.

Erling Haaland, whose place in Manchester City's side was in doubt after being granted compassionate leave this week, continued his incredible start to the season with two goals as City recovered from conceding after 22 seconds to win 2-1.

Reigning champions City are top with a maximum 12 points from four games, with Liverpool on nine along with third-placed Aston Villa who hit back from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2 thanks to a stunning Jhon Duran winner.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who drew 0-0 at home to promoted Ipswich Town, are on eight points along with Forest.

Manchester United's new signing Matthijs de Ligt grabbed his first goal of the season and Marcus Rashford scored for the first time since March as Erik Ten Hag's side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Southampton who are yet to earn a point.

Liverpool's transition from the Juergen Klopp era had appeared seamless as they began the season with three league victories, but they stumbled badly against Forest.

"The result frustrates the most, and we cannot be happy about how the game went. It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances," lamented Dutchman Slot. "We only have to look at ourselves - we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball."

For Forest, their start offers optimism that they can finally begin to look upwards in the table after two seasons fighting against relegation.

They produced a tactically astute display to frustrate Liverpool and then sent their visiting fans wild as Anthony Elanga found his fellow substitute Hudson-Odoi with a brilliant cross-field pass, and the 23-year-old winger cut inside before bending a tremendous effort past Alisson.

"We are working hard, and it is about building and believing in this idea that you can develop," Espirito Santo said.

<h2>Goal Machine</h2>

Man City, whose 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules will start to be heard by an independent tribunal next week -- charges the club denies - were stunned as Brentford opened the scoring in the first minute at The Etihad.

Yoane Wissa gave the London side the lead but Norwegian goal machine Haaland struck twice before halftime.

He restored parity in the 20th minute when he scored from a tight angle with his second touch of the game and then muscle through from an Ederson clearance to chip what turned out to be the winning goal.

Haaland was denied a third that would have made him the first player since 1946 to score three successive hat-tricks in the English top flight. He has nine goals in four games -- more than any other English top-flight team has managed this season.

City's neighbours United had lost two of their opening three games to once again put the pressure on manager Ten Hag, but they were convincing winners against Southampton on the south coast as they moved to six points.

Things might have been different though had Saints' Cameron Archer not had a first-half penalty saved by Andre Onana when the score was still 0-0.

"Once Andre stopped the penalty, straight after, we scored a goal with Matthijs de Ligt, the game was all ours and we dominate the game from that point," Ten Hag said.

Leicester City were denied a first win of the season as Jean-Philippe Mateta's stoppage-time penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi had put the Foxes 2-0 ahead but Mateta threw the home side a lifeline and then coolly slotted home a penalty at the death.

West Ham United also needed a stoppage-time goal to grab a 1-1 draw at London rivals Fulham -- Danny Ings striking in the 95th minute after Raul Jimenez had given the hosts the lead.
