The three-team race for the last two National League playoff berths will be decided Monday in a hurricane-delayed double-header between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. The Mets and Braves lead the hunt while the Arizona Diamondbacks kept themselves in contention with a victory in their final regular-season game on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks will only be able to watch as their rivals clash in two games postponed from Wednesday and Thursday because of the approach of Hurricane Helene. The delayed games mean San Diego's Luis Arraez will have to wait to officially celebrate his National League batting title -- which denied Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani the National League triple crown of most home runs, most runs-batted-in and best batting average.

Atlanta's Marcell Ozuna, like Ohtani, came into the weekend with a chance to catch Arraez for the best batting average in the NL. But even with the Braves' makeup games to come, Arraez appeared to have locked up the honor after a sixth-inning double in the Padres' 11-2 loss to the Diamondbacks, which gave him a .314 batting average for the season.

It's his third batting title in three seasons after he claimed it in 2022 with Minnesota and in 2023 with Miami. The 27-year-old is the first player to win the title with three different teams.

Ohtani indeed led the NL with 54 homers and in RBIs with 131, but after going 1-for-4 in the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Rockies, he finished the season with a .310 batting average. "I didn't even think about the triple crown," Ohtani said through a translator. "I wasn't aware of how close or far I was from it."

The last MLB player to nab a triple crown was Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in 2012. The treble hasn't been achieved in the National League since St. Louis' Joe Medwick did it in 1937. But Ohtani heads into the first post-season of his career with plenty to celebrate -- notably the establishment of the 50-homer, 50-stolen base club.

MLB heads into bonus day as Padres' Luis Arraez denies Shohei Ohtani triple crown

Spaniard Angel Hidalgo emerged victorious against compatriot Jon Rahm in a play-off to win the Spanish Open in Madrid on Sunday. Hidalgo needed two extra holes to beat three-time champion Rahm and claim play-off victory by sinking a two-foot putt after both players had birdied the first.

"Two or three years ago, I was in the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon -- without playing, I just come here to Madrid to see the tournament," said Hidalgo. "To be here and win the tournament is unreal. Oh, my gosh, it's amazing."

The duo started the day together in an all-Spanish final group with David Puig. But Hidalgo's two-shot overnight lead evaporated as his group-mates birdied the first hole -- which he bogeyed.

The 26-year-old recovered his composure to complete his final round with a score of 70. When Rahm birdied the 17th and 18th, his final 68 meant the two Spaniards were tied on 14-under, forcing a play-off.

After the pair both birdied the first extra hole, Rahm hit a wayward tee-shot on the second and then chipped through the green. Hidalgo kept his nerve to nurse the ball close to the pin and then made no mistake from close range to seal his maiden win at his local open.

"May he (Hidalgo) enjoy it," said Rahm. "Winning at home, winning a Spanish Open with all the support that there has been. You could tell how much he felt it and how important it was for him."

But Hidalgo's two-shot overnight lead evaporated as his group-mates birdied the first hole -- which he bogeyed.
The MotoGP could return to India in 2026 after a three-year gap as the top riders in the world are likely to gather for the biggest racing carnival. With the race likely to take place in 2026, WION caught up exclusively with Arjun Nohwar who played a key role in bringing the race back to the Indian audience. Arjun currently works as the Managing Director, South Asia, Warner Bros. Discovery and with the groups sports offering, Eurosport, will bring the MotoGP’s live and exclusive coverage for Indian audiences through Eurosport.

Arjun spoke on the challenges he faced while also understanding that they intend to be in the MotoGP broadcast market in the long run. The premier event was skipped from the MotoGP calendar in 2024 and 2025 but could feature in 2026 if sponsors are available for the event. An agreement in August saw Eurosport, the official broadcaster of the event in India announce a new three-year agreement with MotoGP, until 2026 inclusive. In addition, Dorna also confirmed a new contract between MotoGP and the government of Uttar Pradesh reaffirming the Indian Grand Prix for the calendar from 2026.

Question: What is the long-term vision of Eurosport as you face stern competition?

Eurosport India is committed to expanding its presence in Indian sports broadcasting by focusing on a diverse range of sports beyond cricket, like motorsports, football, and wrestling. We aim to build long-term partnerships for consistent fan engagement and are investing in both TV and OTT platforms for wider accessibility. With key sports rights like MotoGP and a growing interest in Indian sports, we are positioning ourselves to challenge established broadcasters while shaping India's sports ecosystem.

Question: With India being a cricket-dominant nation, what is your take on it and will you be able to get a good reach for MotoGP?

Yes, cricket is the bread and butter of Indian sports and we have a strategy in place to get things going. Part of the project included broadcasting the Afghanistan-New Zealand one-off Test in September.

However, at the same time, we want to create a different identity as we bring the Eredivisie Dutch League in football. With Moto GP we have now strengthened our motorsports offering as well while MMA and other popular sports continue to be part of our offerings.

We could even explore bringing back Formula One on television, but that is another debate for the time being.

Rishabh Pant is one name that is on everyone’s lips, and why not - he just scored perhaps the best comeback hundred in the game (against Bangladesh in the Chennai Test). However, the ex-India gloveman, Dinesh Karthik, says hold on, reminding everyone of Dhoni’s credentials in this format.

Karthik, who, all his life, was compared to MS Dhoni, knows what it takes to surpass the great man in Tests, a format that wasn’t Dhoni’s favourite in the first place.

Asking fans to hold their horses for now regarding Pant’s status in Test cricket, Karthik said, “It’s very unacceptable to say that he’s played 34 Tests and he’s already India’s greatest wicketkeeper batter. Let’s take time, let’s not jump to conclusions, but definitely, he’s on course for sure, and he will finish as India’s greatest ever wicketkeeper.”

“Don’t discount Dhoni’s credentials as a wicketkeeper as well. He not only kept brilliantly, batted and scored runs when it mattered very, very well for India, but also, he led India to a World Test Championship mace, which is becoming number one. So, you got to give all that weightage as well when you speak about a player all round,” the former India player said in a chat on Cricbuzz.

Comeback hundred for Pant

Rishabh Pant was enjoying his cricket and life when a horrifying car crash almost killed him. Though with God’s grace, he came out of it alive, and despite being sidelined for more than a year, he returned to playing competitive cricket, Pant made his chances count since.

He captained Delhi Capitals upon his return, ending up as their highest scorer this season (448 runs in 13 matches), and almost a month later, won his maiden T20 World Cup for India in the Americas.

Picked for the first time in the Test squad since December 2022, Pant got out early in the first innings against Bangladesh but slammed a brilliant hundred in the second.

Meanwhile, unlike MS Dhoni or any other Indian gloveman earlier, Pant already has a Test hundred in Australia, England and South Africa, with Australia being his favourite venue.

Let’s take time, let’s not jump to conclusions, but definitely, he’s on course for sure, and he will finish as India’s greatest ever wicketkeeper.” “Don’t discount Dhoni’s credentials as a wicketkeeper as well. He not only kept brilliantly, batted and scored runs when it mattered very, very well for India, but also, he led India to a World Test Championship mace, which is becoming number one. So, you got to give all that weightage as well when you speak about a player all round,” the former India player said in a chat on Cricbuzz. Comeback hundred for Pant Rishabh Pant was enjoying his cricket and life when a horrifying car crash almost killed him.
Bangladesh T20Is next in line for Pandya

Hardik Pandya has had a mixed-match 2023. While his return to his former IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, this time as a skipper, was no short of a troublesome run for him and the team as they finished last on the points table, the right-hander played a handy role in helping India win the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas in June.

Out of the team since the Sri Lanka T20Is, for personal reasons, Pandya is all set to return to the squad for the Bangladesh T20Is.

With Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja having retired from the shortest format, and the BCCI selectors said to be resting some key players from this series considering workload management, Pandya could be among the few high-profile names to be picked.

India is scheduled to travel to South Africa for four T20Is just before the start of the five-match Test series against Australia and the selectors will consider Pandya’s case for the tour Down Under.

Meanwhile, premium seamer Mohammed Shami will also be fit before the Australian series, per the latest reports, with Team India benefitting from more seam bowlers.

Ace India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is in line to make a shock return to Test cricket for the first time in six years. Having last appeared in the whites for the country in 2018, Pandya is now gearing up for the five-match Test series Down Under starting November 22.

Having last appeared in the whites for the country in 2018, Pandya is now gearing up for the five-match Test series Down Under starting November 22. Per the latest reports, Pandya has put in hard yards under the watchful eyes of Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Amin at the Mighty Willow Cricket Academy in London lately, with his training video doing rounds on social media. We worked on several things, and I’m excited to see his progress in the future,” Amin wrote on his Instagram post. “Working with a player at the highest level can teach you so much. The insights have been invaluable, and it’s also been great fun. As with all of the high-profile players I have worked with, I’m very appreciative that Hardik has trusted me to provide input on his game. Well done, and all the best, brother,” he continued.
Bangladesh could be without their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the second Test against India in Kanpur starting September 27, the team management hinted ahead of their departure from Chennai. The travelling side is trailing (0-1) in the two-match series after going down in the first game by 280 runs. However, Shakib’s absence from the second game would hurt their chances of making a comeback against India in this series.

Shakib hurt his finger (while batting) in his bowling hand (left) during the first Test in Chennai, with Bangladesh Captain Najmul Shanto deciding against bowling him enough in the second innings to avoid it getting aggravated.

Per the latest reports, Bangladesh’s medical staff has put Shakib under observation for at least two days before taking a final call on his participation in the second Test.

"We are heading to Kanpur tomorrow (Tuesday), and today is a day off. We will have two sessions afterwards, and we will judge after that (regarding Shakib's availability in the second Test), and we don't want to make a decision yet," Hannan Sarkar, a member of the BCB's selection panel, said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"These two days, the physio has kept him under observation. When we get back to the ground, we will get the physio's feedback. We have to think before picking Shakib for the next match, and there is time before the next match. We will see what condition he is in," he said.

Shakib was fit before Chennai Test

Although Shakib batted in both innings, he bowled just 21 overs in the game, eight of which came in the second innings. For Bangladesh’s oldest Test cricketer, he went wicketless in the match for the fifth time in his Test career.

With Shakib’s injury rumoured to be troubling him even before the series began, Hannan put these speculations to rest by admitting that Shakib was declared fully fit before the start of the series.

"We know the pain in his hand is being discussed. It was not there before the match, and many have tried to explain it in different ways. But before the match, we got a 100 per cent clearance from the physio before taking him. He was a 100 per cent fit then," said Hannan.

"You can't say it's an injury. The discomfort he felt in that finger was not there before the match. He felt that when he started to bowl," he continued.

Arsenal played the entire second half a man down after Leandro Trossard was sent off but was seconds away from inflicting City's first home defeat since November 2022.

Erling Haaland's 100th City goal had given Pep Guardiola's men the perfect start.

Arsenal turned the game around thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's wonder strike and another set-piece header from Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Gunners lost Trossard for a second booking just before half-time. However, Mikel Arteta's men produced a stunning rearguard action to hold out until the final seconds when Stones bundled in after Arsenal failed to clear a corner. The powder keg for an explosive encounter was lit within the first few seconds when Kai Havertz charged into Rodri to leave the Spaniard needing treatment.

John Stones' 98th-minute equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw for Manchester City against 10-man Arsenal in a bad-tempered clash between the two favourites for the Premier League title on Sunday. Arsenal played the entire second half a man down after Leandro Trossard was sent off but was seconds away from inflicting City's first home defeat since November 2022. A draw is enough for City to retake top spot, two points clear of Arsenal in fourth. Guardiola said City had been handed an advantage by having an extra day's rest and not travelling for their Champions League draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday. Arsenal, by contrast, were in Italy on Thursday for their 0-0 stalemate against Atalanta.
