Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia won the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi on Sunday to complete a weekend double and cut his gap to rival Jorge Martin at the top of the world championship down to 10 points.

The Ducati rider, who qualified in second after dominating practice and won Saturday's sprint, kept Martin at bay for 20 laps to clinch an eighth win of the season for the first time in his career.

Martin's second-place finish moved him up to 392 points while Bagnaia is second on 382, with four races left to go in the season.

"I feel super happy. We managed to gain 11 points during this weekend," said Bagnaia, whose win was the 900th by an Italian in MotoGP history.

The race began in overcast conditions at Motegi's Twin Ring circuit, with pole-sitter Pedro Acosta overtaken before the first turn of the first lap as Bagnaia darted past him into the lead.

Championship leader Martin (Pramac Racing) began in the fourth row after crashing during qualifying, but had a spectacular opening lap as he launched himself off the line and quickly moved up from 11th to fourth.

The battle for the riders' championship came to the forefront in the fourth lap when Martin rose to second as he overtook Brad Binder and rookie Acosta, who crashed in Saturday's sprint, once again went down.

<h2>Managing the race</h2>

Bagnaia managed the race well and kept a healthy distance between himself and Martin.

"Jorge today was much stronger, so I was just trying to manage the gap," Bagnaia added. "I think the pace was incredible. We have to move on to the next one with the same ambition, the same strategy, and try to continue like this."

Alarm bells went off for Ducati in the 22nd lap as the Spaniard cut down the lead to 0.8 seconds with a blistering run. It was too little too late however, as Bagnaia was warned of the danger and upped his pace to shut down Martin's challenge.

"I'm happy about the result today. I think we did an amazing race," Martin said. "For sure, being close to Pecco (Bagnaia), I wanted to give it a try, so I never gave up during that race. I pushed in the end. I'm super happy about this second position."

Gresini Racing's Marc Marquez completed the podium after starting ninth on the grid.

Six-times MotoGP champion Marquez put in a masterful performance to finish on the podium, fending off a string of attacks in a hard-fought battle for third with Ducati's Enea Bastianini.

"Another podium. It was a difficult weekend, but we're on the podium again, so super happy," Marquez said.

Dark clouds came rolling in at Motegi in the tenth lap and race directors waved the white flag, allowing riders to swap their bikes, but the skies eventually cleared without any rain.

Home hero Takaaki Nakagami of LCR Honda, racing in his final Japanese Grand Prix as a full-time MotoGP rider, finished 13th while Aprilia's Maverick Vinales had a race to forget, falling from third to 11th before crashing out midway through the race.

Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia holds off Jorge Martin to seal Japanese Grand Prix double

Australia seems to have run out of options to replace David Warner at the top, especially in Tests, and with the Border-Gavaskar series looming, they are exploring all options available, including replacing Steve Smith with Travis Head. However, the former Australia captain and batting great, Ian Chappell, feels it’s either an extremely desperate ploy or an extraordinarily adventurous move.

Following Warner’s retirement earlier this year, Test giant Steve Smith volunteered to open despite selectors looking for options like Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris. That ploy, however, didn’t pay dividends as Smith fared average against the new ball in limited outings.&nbsp;

With consensus building on the subject, pundits say&nbsp;Smith must return to bat at his usual position at number four, where he scored the bulk of the runs in his career, averaging above 60. Australia would need someone to replace him at the top, with talks of Travis Head being the right man for that position underway.

Although Head has been a star batter for Australia for the past two years, scoring heaps of runs while opening in the shorter formats, he is yet to prove his mettle at the same position in Tests – a format that Chappell calls ‘very different’ from ODIs and T20Is.&nbsp;

“Head opening in Test cricket is based on his unbridled success facing the new ball in both 50-over and T20 cricket. There's no doubt Head, with his ultra-aggressive style, is the ideal player to open in the two short forms of the game. However, Test cricket is an entirely different proposition.”

“Head's promotion to open in Test cricket should be seen as either an extremely desperate ploy or an extraordinarily adventurous move,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

<h2>Head might struggle against Bumrah</h2>

Head has won his battles against some top bowlers worldwide, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami, but despite that, he is unlikely to bluff their bowlers, given what they bring to the table, Chappell feels.&nbsp;

“One big flaw in the argument for Head to open in Test cricket is the opposition he'll face. If it were a lesser opponent, it might have some merit but a strong Indian attack will be hard to bluff.”

“Any move to open with Head that is designed to unsettle Jasprit Bumrah is asking a lot of the batter. Bumrah, and to a lesser extent, Mohammad Siraj, are unlikely to be battered into altering their attacking mentality.”

“As well as fine fast bowlers, Head is also vulnerable against good off-spin bowling. The wily R Ashwin is unlikely to be panicked by an opponent's ultra-aggressive approach. The argument could be mounted that opening with Head means he'd be more settled facing Ashwin with some runs on the board. On the other hand, a smart opposing captain can utilise the off-spinner with a newish ball,” he continued.&nbsp;

Team India T20I Captain Suryakumar Yadav has hinted at Mayank Yadav’s potential debut against Bangladesh in the first T20I in Gwalior on Sunday (Oct 6). Speaking on the eve of the match, SKY called Mayank an ‘x-factor’, adding his express pace separates him from the rest. Though the skipper admitted he hasn’t faced him in the nets yet, he could see the potential in Mayank since his IPL days early this year.

Mayank emerged onto the scene during IPL 2024 when he bowled over 150kmph in his debut game for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against RCB. His back-to-back three-wicket hauls in his first two games earned him the Player of the Match award but he got ruled out of the tournament with an abdominal injury soon after.&nbsp;

"He definitely has the X factor - it was evident when he played franchise cricket," Suryakumar said of Mayank ahead of the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior.&nbsp;

"He has that extra pace. I didn't face him in the nets; our net plan was such that someone else faced him. But I have seen what potential he has and what difference he can make for the team. From that point of view, I feel he is a good addition to the Indian team, and I am hoping he will do well.

"It's important to manage him well because of the amount of cricket being played. Everyone is playing for their state too. There was the Duleep Trophy recently. So it is important to pay proper attention, and the BCCI is doing that,” he continued.

The Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior will host the first of the three matches, and given the stadium is staging its first international match, a surprise element conditions-wise awaits both teams. While Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy expects the surface to play ‘slow and low’, Surya thinks the opposite.

The pitch looks good," SKY said. "We practised on the centre wicket, just two pitches away. We didn't find it that low and slow - we practised all three days. So it [the match pitch] should not be much different.

"For T20 cricket, these are good wickets. There will be good competition [between the bat and ball], but at the same time, it looks good [for run-scoring].

<h2>Captain happy with all-rounders</h2>

Since winning the T20 World Cup in the Americas earlier in June, Team India won their two assignments, against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka since. Rested for the Zimbabwe series, SKY returned for the away SL series as a T20I captain, overseeing budding cricketers trying to make the most of the opportunities.&nbsp;

With Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag and Washington Sundar in the side, besides seam-bowling all-rounders Hardik Pandya and uncapped Nitish Kumar Reddy, SKY feels having more options to try from (all-rounders) is a win-win situation for India.

"It's good if your batters can bowl an over or two. I think there is hardly anyone in this squad who doesn't bowl. That gives you more bowling options on the ground. As you saw in Sri Lanka, Riyan [Parag] bowled four overs. If someone says he can bowl in the pressure situation, then why not,” Suryakumar concluded.

Meanwhile, the first match will begin at 7:30 PM IST.&nbsp;

IND v BAN 2024 1st T20I, Preview: All eyes on ‘x-factor’ Mayank Yadav as India gear up for Bangladesh T20Is

It’s time for another chapter in the India vs Pakistan rivalry in the Women’s T20 World Cup as both teams face off in the marquee clash on Super Sunday (Oct 6). While Pakistan enters this contest after a 31-run win over Sri Lanka in their opener, India is on the back foot after losing their first game to New Zealand by 58 runs. Here is the match preview and result prediction for the India vs Pakistan match in the Women’s T20 WC.

<h2>Match Preview –</h2>

India holds an upper hand against their arch-rivals Pakistan in this competition, having won five out of seven times, with Pakistan last beating them eight years ago in 2016. Even considering the overall tally in the T20Is, India stands tall with 12 wins in 15 contested matches to date.

However, a poor start to the tournament means the Indian women’s team needs to pull up their socks and return to winning ways against Pakistan. Without looking deep into their result against the White Ferns, India had a few positives from which to gain confidence.

While bowling remains India’s best bet against Pakistan, considering the variety of options, mainly in the spin department, their batting needs to step on the day when it matters the most. The onus would again fall on India’s top four to provide the best possible start, with Captain Harmanpreet Kaur holding the key at a new batting position at number three.

On the other hand, Pakistan would keep a close tab on seamer Diana Baig’s injury status, whose selection would be a late call on Sunday. Left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal will hog all the limelight as she leads the wicket-taking chart among all bowlers this year, with 24 wickets from 15 contested games.

Even in the side’s opener against the Asian champions Sri Lanka, Baig picked up three for 17 while defending a low total.

<h3>Result Prediction –</h3>

Knowing India’s back is against the wall, and the only way they can cruise ahead is by winning against Pakistan, they’d be the favourites in Sunday’s mega clash.

<h3>What to expect?</h3>

Considering it’s an afternoon game (3:30 PM IST start), the temperature would be around mid-30, with the one winning the toss would likely bowl first.

Predicted Playing XIs –

Indian Women - Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Deepti Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana and Renuka Thakur

Pakistan Women - Mubeena Ali (wk), Gull Feroza, Sidra Amin, Omaima Sohail, Nida Dar, Fatima Sana (C), Tuba Hassan, Aliya Riaz, Syeda Aroob Shah, Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal

Match Preview – India holds an upper hand against their arch-rivals Pakistan in this competition, having won five out of seven times, with Pakistan last beating them eight years ago in 2016. ALSO READ: IND vs BAN: Blow for India as Shivam Dube gets ruled out of T20I series; Tilak Varma roped in as replacement While bowling remains India’s best bet against Pakistan, considering the variety of options, mainly in the spin department, their batting needs to step on the day when it matters the most. Result Prediction – Knowing India’s back is against the wall, and the only way they can cruise ahead is by winning against Pakistan, they’d be the favourites in Sunday’s mega clash. What to expect? Considering it’s an afternoon game (3:30 PM IST start), the temperature would be around mid-30, with the one winning the toss would likely bowl first. Predicted Playing XIs – Indian Women - Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Deepti Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana and Renuka Thakur Pakistan Women - Mubeena Ali (wk), Gull Feroza, Sidra Amin, Omaima Sohail, Nida Dar, Fatima Sana (C), Tuba Hassan, Aliya Riaz, Syeda Aroob Shah, Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal

Some of FIFA's rules on player transfers go against European Union laws and free movement principles, the EU's top court said on Friday in a ruling that could open the door for players to find a new club more easily after their contract is terminated.

FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) say a player who terminates a contract before its term "without just cause" is liable to pay compensation to the club, and where the player joins a new club they will be jointly liable for payment of compensation.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), ruling on a high-profile case linked to former France player Lassana Diarra, stated these dispositions were unlawful, and the judgment is expected to prompt FIFA to revamp its transfer regulations.

"The rules in question are such as to impede the free movement of professional footballers wishing to develop their activity by going to work for a new club," said the Luxembourg-based CJEU.

"Those rules impose considerable legal risks, unforeseeable and potentially very high financial risks as well as major sporting risks on those players and clubs wishing to employ them which, taken together, are such as to impede international transfers of those players."

In 2014 Diarra left Lokomotiv Moscow one year into a four-year deal and the club took the matter to FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), arguing he had breached the rules when his contract was terminated after the player decided to leave without just cause following a pay cut.

Diarra received an offer to join Belgian club Charleroi but the club backed out after FIFA refused to sign the International Transfer Certificate (ITC), preventing the player being registered with the Belgian federation.

According to the CJEU ruling, it is also unlawful to refuse to sign the ITC.

In 2015, FIFA ordered Diarra to pay 10 million euros ($11.05 million) in damages to Lokomotiv, prompting the former Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid player to sue the world governing body and Belgian FA for damages before a local court.

The CJEU ruling could also lead other players affected by the FIFA regulations like Diarra was to also seek damages.

"All professional players have been affected by these illegal rules (in force since 2001) and can therefore now seek compensation for their losses," Diarra's lawyers Jean-Louis Dupont and Martin Hissel said in a statement.

"We are convinced that this 'price to pay' for violating EU law will - at last - force FIFA to submit to the EU rule of law and speed up the modernisation of governance."

<h2>‘FIFA’s immunity is over’</h2>

Dupont added that the whole transfer system will change with the court's ruling.

"FIFA's immunity is over, there will be a before and after in (football) governance after the EU (court) ruling," Dupont told Reuters.

FIFA said it was "satisfied that the legality of key principles of the transfer system have been re-confirmed in today's ruling. The ruling only puts in question two paragraphs of two articles of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, which the national court is now invited to consider.

"FIFA will analyse the decision in coordination with other stakeholders before commenting further," the soccer body added.

"On behalf of professional football players worldwide FIFPRO welcomes these (ECJ) findings," the international players' union said.

"The ECJ has just handed down a major ruling on the regulation of the labour market... which will change the landscape of professional football."

David Terrier, the president of FIFPRO Europe, said they were happy for Diarra but that he was not the only victim.

"The reality is we are going to see how to repair the damage for all the players who were victims of the (FIFA transfer) system," Terrier told Reuters.

<h3>Reduced Transfer Fees?</h3>

The ruling could result in reduced transfer fees and more economic power for players, according to Ian Giles, the EMEA head of antitrust and competition at global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright.

"It's entirely possible this means players will feel they can now break contracts and sign on with new clubs, without the selling club being able to hold them or demand significant transfer fees," Giles said.

"But over time things will have to stabilise to allow clubs to remain economically viable. Smaller clubs who rely on transfer fees for talent they have developed may well be the losers in this context.

"In terms of free movement, the ECJ recognises that there may be a justification on public interest grounds to maintain the stability of playing squads, but considers the current rules go beyond what is necessary."

The European Club Association (ECA), which represents more than 700 clubs, was not immediately reachable for comment.

Some FIFA player transfer rules go against laws, says European Union top court in jolt judgment

Pete Alonso crushed a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning as the New York Mets worked their comeback magic in a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday to advance in the Major League Baseball playoffs. The victory gave the Mets a 2-1 triumph in the best-of-three National League Wild Card series and sends them into a best-of-five second-round clash with the Philadelphia Phillies starting on Saturday.

New York, who booked their post-season berth with a come-from-behind victory over Atlanta in a make-up game on Monday, showed their grit again. Alonso was the hero, becoming the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead home run with his team trailing in the ninth inning or later in a winner-take-all playoff game.

"I was just looking out over the middle of the plate, just looking to hit something hard forward," Alonso said. "Man, this is something that you practice in the backyard as a kid. I'm just happy to come through for the boys."

The Mets trailed 2-0 after Milwaukee's Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick belted back-to-back homers in the bottom of the seventh to break open a scoreless game.

Unable to make anything happen in the eighth, the Mets finally broke through against Brewers closer Devin Williams, who walked Francisco Lindor to open the ninth.

Williams struck out Mark Vientos, but Brandon Nimmo singled to put runners at first and third and bring Alonso to the plate.

"I had some great at-bats in front of me," Alonso said. "I'm really happy I got to come through for the team right there. "We've worked so hard all year to get to this point," he added. "I'm just so happy I was able to contribute."

The Mets added one more run after Jesse Winker was hit by a pitch from Williams, stole second base and scored on a single by Starling Marte.

Mets starting pitcher Jose Quintana pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

David Peterson pitched the ninth, giving up an opening single to Sal Frelick and striking out one before Brice Turang hit into a game-ending double play.

In the American league, the Cleveland Guardians host the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees host the Kansas City Royals.

New York Mets rally to stun Milwaukee Brewers to advance in MLB playoffs

Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are the two most successful IPL captains, having won five titles each with Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), respectively. Even though both share common leadership traits and have tactical heads over their shoulders, Rohit’s MI had outdone Dhoni’s CSK in three IPL finals.&nbsp;

Harbhajan Singh, the former multi-time IPL winner and among the handful of players who represented both franchises, revealed why Mumbai Indians were better than Dhoni's CSK in crunch situations.

Though CSK’s maiden title came in 2010 when they beat the home side (Mumbai Indians), the Mumbai-based outfit beat CSK in three IPL finals since (2013, 2015 and 2019), with Rohit leading against Dhoni on all occasions.

So, what did they do better to go one step ahead of the genius of MS Dhoni? Harbhajan Singh explains.

“The tricks Dhoni used to come up with, we worked to find a solution,” Harbhajan said in a chat with Sports Yaari. “In pressure situations, MI did better than CSK. When I left MI to join CSK, I got a lot of love. Bowled well and won a championship, got a runners-up medal as well.”

“In that match (IPL 2018), Dwayne Bravo's magical batting and Kedar Jadhav's show earned CSK the title. Else, MI would've won again. To overcome Dhoni, you have to think better, play your cards better. It isn't easy. MI have done it as they had better players, and the planning was also good," Harbhajan noted while recalling the close group stage encounter between both teams in IPL 2018.

<h2>Rohit is no less than Dhoni</h2>

MS Dhoni is by far the only captain in cricket history to win three ICC titles, besides winning the Test mace in 2009. Since he left, first Virat Kohli and now Rohit Sharma have carried forward the legacy; Harbhajan feels like every captain Rohit tasted his share of success and no less than anyone regarding helping strengthen India’s stance on the world stage.

“Why do you compare the two? Dhoni led the team and took it forward; Rohit is also doing the same. Every cup you win, you put hope in others. That is important. The better captain is the one who inspires you to win. If we talk about achievements, Rohit is not lesser than Dhoni. Dada, Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit, everyone has contributed in their own way to take the team forward. Now, the fight is within to take the team even a step further," the former India spinner added.

England Test captain Ben Stokes remains doubtful for the first Test against Pakistan in Multan starting Monday (Oct 10). Opener Zak Crawley, who missed the Sri Lanka series due to a broken finger, is declared fit for the series opener.&nbsp;

Stokes suffered a hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred in August, missing the home Sri Lanka series that followed, which England won 2-1 under the stand-in captain Ollie Pope. If Stokes remains out of contention for the first game, Pope will continue to lead the team, with the seasoned campaigner Chris Woakes expected to come in for Stokes.

Woakes’ inclusion will help him press his case for the next home summer against India (at home) and, more importantly, for the away summer Ashes late in 2025.

Meanwhile, Crawley is confirmed to return to the playing XI for the first game, with the attacking opener admitting that England is placed well in Stokes’ absence.

"We've got a really deep squad, with plenty of options with the ball and with the bat as well. We feel ready. Whatever team comes out, it will be a nice balance either way,” Crawley said ahead of the first Test against Pakistan.

While England might name their final playing XI around two days before the start of the series, as has become customary for them, Crawley said the management will take a late call on Stokes’ inclusion.

"He seems to be going well, recovering well from his injury. We don't know just yet. I think he's got to do a few more tests, but he's been doing some running and stuff,” Crawley continued.

<h2>Crawley suggests a new fielding position post-recovery</h2>

Zak Crawley broke his finger while attempting to take a catch during the West Indies Test series earlier in July, missing all competitive action since. Though he admits not feeling any pain while batting in the nets, Crawley suggested changing his fielding position for the Pakistan series.

"The finger is all right," Crawley said.&nbsp;

"It's as good as it could be at this stage. I've recovered well from it. It was a nasty break at the time, but I've recovered well, and I don't feel it at all while I'm batting. In the field, I haven't done too much. I'm trying to rest it, but I did a few catches there [in training] and it feels fine.

"I won't go at slip, just from advice from the doctor. I feel like I could, but I'm just trying to follow the professional advice. It feels back to normal now, so I'm looking forward to cracking on… I feel brand new. I'm looking forward to getting out there. I've certainly missed it, so I can't wait to get out there again with the boys,” he continued.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Multan will host the first two Tests, and Rawalpindi will host the final match of the series.

PAK v ENG 2024: Ben Stokes doubtful for first Test against Pakistan, Zak Crawley declared fit

Australia great Steve Smith admits being ‘clueless’ over his batting position against India in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series Down Under. Since David Warner’s Test retirement earlier this year, Smith volunteered to open, only for him to become the pale shadow of himself at the top of the order. With the five-match Test series against India looming, Smith and the Australian Team are seeking answers to who would open alongside Usman Khawaja.

Though Smith wanted to challenge himself by playing out of his regular position (number four), where he scored most Test runs and hundreds and averaged above 60, his numbers against the new ball suggest a different story.&nbsp;

Khawaja, however, feels Smith is best at batting at number four for Australia.

“I have no idea, there are conversations happening in the background,” Smith said in a chat with reporters, as quoted by Hindustan Times. “Usman, I think said that he likes me down at No.4. I think Marnus has similar thoughts. We will wait and see. I am happy anywhere, I'll bat wherever for the team, but we'll see what happens,” he continued.

With Cameron Green’s latest injury adding worries for the selectors, they have a hefty task to figure out who could open alongside Khawaja if not Smith. Though Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris were a few names discussed ahead of the past summer, the hosts could either pick any one of them or continue with Smith at the top to accommodate Green (when fit) and Mitchell Marsh in the middle order.

<h2>Smith awaits Indian challenge</h2>

Smith was the Australian captain when Australia last won the BGT (home or away) in 2014/15; having fared against them all this while, Smith knows what challenge awaits them this time. Considering Australia has lost to India twice at home (in 2018/2019 and 2020/2021), they have plenty to play for this time when the series gets underway in Perth on November 22.

Smith feels the five-match Test series gives every player a chance to show up and deliver, restricting them from hiding from anything, which makes it a mouth-watering contest.

“It's great that we are able to play a five-match series against them. You can't really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series. If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It's going to be a wonderful series,” Smith added.

While acknowledging the touring Indian Team’s mettle on the past two occasions, Smith admitted both teams are best in this format, and irrespective of the latest results, both want to qualify for the WTC Final and win it.

“We are probably the two best teams in the world at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They have been great out here the last couple of times and played some really good cricket. Hopefully, we can turn the tables. It's been 10 years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. We need to do that this year,” Smith concluded.

Though Smith wanted to challenge himself by playing out of his regular position (number four), where he scored most Test runs and hundreds and averaged above 60, his numbers against the new ball suggest a different story. Khawaja, however, feels Smith is best at batting at number four for Australia. ALSO READ: Younis Khan overlooks Shaheen, Rizwan for white-ball captaincy, picks Fakhar Zaman to lead Pakistan Down Under “I have no idea, there are conversations happening in the background,” Smith said in a chat with reporters, as quoted by Hindustan Times. Smith awaits Indian challenge Smith was the Australian captain when Australia last won the BGT (home or away) in 2014/15; having fared against them all this while, Smith knows what challenge awaits them this time. ‘I have no idea’ - Steve Smith ‘clueless’ over batting position against India in Border-Gavaskar series

Cricket great Younis Khan has overlooked Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi as Babar Azam's potential replacement for Pakistan's new white-ball captaincy, naming a surprise choice in top-order batter Fakhar Zaman to take over the vacant role. Currently in Adelaide&nbsp;to promote the white-ball series against Australia starting November 4, Khan is surprised that no one is talking about Fakhar, who continues to perform every time irrespective of the format.

Shortly after getting sacked as Pakistan's all-format captain after they failed to reach the 2023 ODI World Cup semis, the PCB reinstated Babar into the leadership group, announcing him as the white-ball skipper ahead of the T20 World Cup in the Americas earlier.&nbsp;

That, however, didn’t change their fortunes, as Pakistan fumbled big time, losing to co-host and debutants USA and arch-rivals India in two straight matches before getting knocked out in the Group Stage.

Speaking on the captaincy drama back home, Younis acknowledged Rizwan and Shaheen’s credentials but backed Fakhar to press his case as the new white-ball leader.

"I think there are some senior players like Mohammad Rizwan, but the one guy nobody mentions is Fakhar Zaman," Younis said of Fakhar Zaman. "He's a fantastic cricketer, and he performs every single year.&nbsp;

A T20 World Cup-winning captain, Younis, understands what it means to deliver with the skipper’s hat on and the pressure that comes with it, saying Babar Azam is right in stepping aside from the captaincy role to work on his batting in his quest to become the country’s best player ever.

"I was the first guy last month to suggest to him that if he wanted to play and spend his career the way he had performed in the past, I think it's better for him to play as a player and to perform for Pakistan team," Younis said.&nbsp;

"Especially if you're losing against India, you're gone. But that is how a leader is born and that is the demand of international cricket. You have to combat these kind of pressures, so I hope the next captain will do a fantastic job.

"When I was captain, for me it was team first, my players first, my country first so I think that thinking and that mindset was my success. If you play for the team, and you play for country and especially if you play for each other that is the main thing and if you do that you will be successful,” he concluded.

Joining Ipswich Town might have seemed unthinkable for Kalvin Phillips when he was one of the first names on the England team sheet and his career was on a steep upward curve.

But now the 28-year-old former Leeds United midfielder is thankful to the Suffolk club for helping rebuild a career that was going completely off the rails.

Phillips played almost every minute of England's run to the final of the delayed Euro 2020 tournament after bursting on to the international scene under former coach Gareth Southgate.

His rapid rise resulted in a 42 million pounds ($55 million) move to Manchester City in July 2022 but rather than take his game to the next level -- Phillips stalled.

City manager Pep Guardiola's comments that Phillips returned from the Qatar World Cup out of shape hardly helped and the following January he was loaned out to West Ham United.

Phillips' stock fell even further there, giving away a goal on his debut, getting sent off in his second league start then being substituted at halftime in his third. He reached a new low in a game at Newcastle United in March when he came on as a substitute with West Ham leading 3-1 and conceded a penalty as the Hammers eventually lost 4-3.

There are positive signs, however, that Phillips has turned a corner since joining promoted Ipswich on loan and Saturday's trip to West Ham offers the chance to prove a few people wrong.

"(When coming to Ipswich) I made a decision that I wanted to play my football, not stress free, but with less stress and less eyes on me maybe," Phillips told former Leeds team mate Patrick Bamford on the My Mate's a Footballer podcast.

"At West Ham I felt like there were quite a lot of eyes on me because it was my first loan move since going to City. Obviously it didn't work out well and I got quite a bit of stick. Sometimes you can handle that well, sometimes you can go the other way and handle it not so well!"

Phillips is full of praise for Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna whose team has earned four draws from six league matches in the club's first top-flight campaign for 22 years.

"The main reason I came to Ipswich was just to get back playing football week in week out, and make sure that I'm fit again, and I'm not getting many injuries," Phillips said. "Every club I'd go to, the manager and nutritionist, they'd always speak about weight before they'd say anything else. At a point it peed me off a little bit.

"Now I've come to Ipswich and the manager is an unbelievable person as well as a manager. We spoke about all the past stuff that happened in my career. He just said he wanted me to get to where I was when I was at Leeds."

Phillips was not even part of the conversation when England's squad was announced on Thursday for next week's Nations League fixtures.

For now though, all that he cares about is playing football again with a smile on his face.

"From day one, McKenna made me feel like I was wanted there and that was going to play a massive part this season," he said.

Manchester City discard Kalvin Phillips thanks Ipswich Town for career revival

Erik ten Hag pleaded to be given until the end of the season as Manchester United boss after needing a late Harry Maguire equaliser to salvage a 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

Ten Hag was under major pressure before the trip to Portugal after just two wins from United's first six Premier League fixtures of the season left them languishing in 13th place in the table.

The Red Devils have also drawn their opening two Europa League games to sit 21st in the 36-team table.

"We will get there, don't judge us in this moment," said Ten Hag. "Judge us in the end of the season. We will improve, we have two seasons where we achieved finals. Just wait, we will develop and progress this team."

Ten Hag has fiercely defended his record after winning the League Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons in charge at Old Trafford -- ending United's six-year trophy drought in the process.

A shock victory over Manchester City in last season's FA Cup final was widely credited with saving his job despite finishing eighth in the Premier League.

But the United hierarchy could be forced to act in the upcoming international break after they travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ten Hag could not have asked for a better start in Porto as goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put United 2-0 up inside 20 minutes

However, the English giants have failed to win any of their last four away European games despite scoring three times in each of them.

Last season they crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages after losing 4-3 at Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen plus a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray.

Another six-goal thriller took place at the Estadio do Dragao as Pepe and Samu Omorodion brought Porto level before half-time.

Omorodion smashed the home side in front early in the second half before United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the second consecutive game.

But Maguire's header from a corner at least salvaged a point for Ten Hag.

"When you get 2-0 away from home you have to be a little bit more solid and there were far too many gaps," said Maguire. "Too many crosses were coming into the box for sure and they ultimately punished us for it."

The England international has lost his regular starting spot in the side to Matthijs de Ligt, who previously worked under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Maguire said the pressure his manager was facing is what comes with the "privilege" of being in the spotlight at one of the world's biggest clubs.

"I've played for this club for six years, I know how it works. When you go on a bad spell players come under pressure and also the manager does," added Maguire. "He's experienced enough and been at this club long enough so I'm sure he knows how to deal with it. It's part of the privilege you have playing for this club."

‘Judge me at the end of season’ - Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag pleads for more time after Porto draw

The time has come for India to take centre stage in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in UAE. As India readies to open their campaign against New Zealand in their tournament opener on Friday (October 6) in the second game of the doubleheader in Dubai, we look at the match preview and result prediction of the marquee T20 WC clash.

<h2>Match Preview</h2>

The Indian women’s cricket team has come close to realizing their dream of lifting the T20 World Cup earlier but failed in their efforts. To ignite the willingness to chase history, the already upbeat Indian squad needs to begin the tournament on a high, and what better than beating New Zealand in their opener?

Though they will have their challenges lined up, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will depend on their batting and bowling openers, respectively, to get the job done, or at least half of it, by beginning well.&nbsp;

Outside of the clear picks in the players to watch out for in star openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues will hog all the limelight. Considering the star-studded batting line-up that would include keeper-batter Richa Gosh, India has a stronger chance of pacing innings anytime in the game.

Much like their batting attack, the Indian women’s team bowling line-up is as lethal. With seasoned campaigners Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh alongside star bowler Radha Yadav, India can challenge any batting side in this tournament.&nbsp;

Though New Zealand’s past five results have all resulted in losses, while India has won four of the past five contested matches, the White Ferns still cannot be discounted for what they bring to the table. In the likes of Sophie Devine (c), Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, and Fran Jonas, the New Zealand women's team has some top players lined up in the XI.

<h3>Result Prediction –</h3>

The Indian women’s team will enter the contest as hot favourites.&nbsp;

India Women - Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Richa Ghosh(wk), Shreyanka Patil, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Asha Sobhana, Radha Yadav and Renuka Singh

At the top of his game, Pakistan fans tipped Usman to carry forward his father’s legacy, only for Shadab Khan to hijack his place in the white-ball side soon after.&nbsp;

Although he began his first-class career 11 years ago in 2013, Usman expressed his desire to represent Australia in international cricket in 2018. He made his Western Australia debut the same year, playing for Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder in the BBL later.

Soon after, his performances dipped, with disciplinary concerns worsening his chances of making his Australia debut. In 2019, Qadir was charged with breaking speed limit rules and summoned to court.

Usman’s father and cricket great, Abdul Qadir, passed away due to a sudden cardiac arrest in 2019, sparking a significant push in Usman's commitment to Pakistan, the country of his birth.&nbsp;

Soon after, even before he publicly declared his interest in returning to Pakistan and playing for them, Misbah-ul-Haq named him in the squad for the Australia series.&nbsp;

Dodgy performances led to his exit from the team, though he lately played for Markhors in the recently concluded Champions One Day Cup.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, last year in May, his relationship with the PCB turned ugly after he accused the Pakistan Cricket Board of mismanaging his injury, stating he had screenshots and other evidence to prove it.&nbsp;

As he parted ways with the game he always loved, Usman further wrote, "As I step into this new chapter, I will be continuing my dad's legacy, embracing both my love for cricket and the lessons he instilled in me. I carry with me the spirit of Pakistan cricket and the cherished memories we created together."

Palmer withdrew from the last England camp through injury but returns after scoring five times in his past two games for Chelsea.

"I've known Cole for a number of years and seen how he's progressed," said Carsley. "Every challenge put in front of him he takes in his stride, he doesn't get too high or too low. It's great to see him doing well."

Nations League: England recall Dominic Solanke for first time in seven years as Parmer, Bellingham return

Bangladesh kicked off the Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a scrappy 16-run win over tournament debutants Scotland in the searing heat of Sharjah on Thursday. After winning the toss and batting first, Sobhana Mostary top-scored with 36 for Bangladesh in a below par total of 119-7.

Their bowlers then strangled Scotland, and in spite of Sarah Bryce's 49 not out, the newcomers could only muster 103-7 in reply, handing Bangladesh their first win in a T20 World Cup in a decade.

It was a tough opener for both sides, with temperatures hitting 38 degrees Celsius and the batters stymied by a sluggish pitch and slow outfield.

There were just 15 fours in the match and no sixes to cheer the sparsely-populated stands.

The Bangladesh innings got off to a solid start with an opening partnership of 26 before Murshida Khatun, dropped on 12, slogged the next ball she faced from Katheryn Bryce to mid-on where Katherine Fraser took the catch.

Shathi Rani then combined with Sobhana Mostary to add 42 for the second wicket before Shathi's attempt to accelerate the scoring resulted in a skied catch to Saskia Horley at mid-on. She scored&nbsp;29 off 32 balls.

Taj Nehar, on her 27th birthday, was run out for a duck before Mostary charged down the wicket to Olivia Bell and was comfortably stumped by Sarah Bryce for 36 from 38 balls.

The end of the innings came with Bangladesh's star batter Nigar Sultana Joty, playing her 100th T20I, falling in the final over for 18, a third wicket for Saskia Horley who finished with 3-13 in two overs.

Scotland's reply began poorly with the early dismissal of Horley, stumped off the impressive Fahima Khatun.

When Marufa bowled Katheryn Bryce with one that nipped back and kept low, Scotland were already behind the pace at 31-2 at the end of the six-over powerplay and they never made that up.

Player of the match Ritu Moni claimed 2-15 from her four overs as Bangladesh chipped away at the Scottish batters, while Sarah Bryce, who also kept wicket, began to feel the effect&nbsp;of the heat.

Her 49 off 52 balls featured just one boundary, which tells the tale of Scotland's innings.

Pakistan play Sri Lanka in the day's second match later in Sharjah.&nbsp;

Following losing to England in the T20I series before the T20 World Cup in the Americas, where they lost to the co-host USA and arch-rivals India in two straight games, leading to them getting knocked out of the tournament in the first round, the pressure started building on Babar. What made matters worse&nbsp;was Babar’s below-par performance&nbsp;throughout.

With the PCB lagging in throwing weight behind their top-ranked batter and Babar differing from the observations mentioned in the report submitted by the coaching group, he decided against continuing in his job despite the ICC Champions Trophy date nearing.

“Babar was not happy with the observations and recommendations of Kirsten and even assistant coach&nbsp;Azhar Mahmood, and felt he was solely being blamed for the disappointing performances," a PCB source close to the information said, as quoted by PTI. "He had indicated to the cricket board after some parts of Kirsten's report became public that he was not interested in remaining captain."

The source further revealed that Babar was unhappy with PCB’s call of not naming him the ODI captain right away while announcing his appointment as the T20 captain ahead of the T20 WC.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in Gary Kirsten’s report submitted to the PCB, he mentioned how the lack of trust and backing in the dressing room and the non-cooperation of some players during the England T20Is and the T20 World Cup led to poor performances and shallow results.&nbsp;

<h2>PCB in no rush to name Babar Azam’s replacement</h2>

Per the latest reports, the PCB is not rushing into naming Babar Azam’s replacement as the new ODI and T20I captain. The selection committee is said to have informally informed Kirsten about them taking time before naming a new white-ball skipper.

“Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear he wants minutes of all official discussions by the selection committee that includes both foreign head coaches to be recorded so that a clear reason is on record for making the appointment," the source added.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin in a money laundering case linked to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). HCA’s former president, Azhar, is accused of misappropriating funds from 2019 to 2022.&nbsp;

The cricketer-turned-politician Azharuddin was required to appear before the ED on Thursday (Oct 4), but he didn’t and sought more time.

The case is related to Azhar allegedly misspending INR 20 crore allocated for the procurement of diesel generators, fire fighting systems, and canopies for the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. However, this is the first time ED has summoned Azhar, with clear directives for him to appear before the probe agency to clarify his name in this money laundering case.

Meanwhile, the ED began an investigation based on three FIRs registered by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Hyderabad, with the corresponding charge sheets filed by the ACB pointing towards criminal misspending of the HCA funds.

The charge sheet also revealed that HCA office bearers, including its then secretary, president, vice-president and others, in fusion with private parties, arbitrarily got various tenders allotted to preferred contractors at higher market rates.&nbsp;

It further stated that those involved went ahead without following proper tender processes, while the advance payments were also made to many without the work being done.

The BCCI banned Mohammad Azharuddin for life for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal during the dawn of the new millennium that rocked Indian cricket. In November 2000, Azhar - the then-Indian captain, admitted his involvement in the wrongdoings, emerging as a ‘key man in the group of Test captains’ who were being investigated.&nbsp;

Alongside him, the BCCI punished several others, including star all-rounder Ajay Jadeja and seamer Manoj Prabhakar.&nbsp;

Although he remained out of Indian cricket since the HCA appointed him as the president in 2019. That year, the BCCI also offered him a chance to be part of the former cricketers honoured with a lap around the ground during the pink-ball Test against Bangladesh in 2019.&nbsp;

The Hyderabad Cricket Stadium also has a stand named after him.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami beat the defending Major League Soccer champions the Columbus Crew 3-2 to clinch the Supporters' Shield awarded for the best regular season record. Messi had been subdued until the 45th minute when he put Inter ahead -- chesting down a long ball into the box and getting a lucky bounce off Crew defender Malte Amundsen before poking home.

Messi, who recently returned from a two-month injury absence, has now scored 17 goals and produced 15 assists in 17 matches

But 20 seconds after the start of the second half, Columbus pulled a goal back when the ball fell to Diego Rossi just inside the box and he cleverly curled his shot into the far corner.

Straight from the restart, Columbus gifted Miami a third when Schulte raced off his line but with defender Rudy Camacho in his way, he dropped the ball to Luis Suarez who headed into the unguarded goal.

The Crew battled back again though and made it 3-2 through a Cucho Hernandez penalty after Noah Allen handled in the box.

But once again, the momentum Columbus had gained was lost when Camacho was sent off for a second yellow card after a studs-up challenge on Federico Redondo.

Seven minutes from the end though, the Crew had a glorious chance to grab a point -- and deny Miami their celebration -- when a penalty was awarded for handball against Ian Fray after a VAR review.

But this time Colombian Hernandez's penalty was weak and Miami keeper Drake Callender dived to his right and saved to secure the Shield for his team.

"I'm happy to achieve the first goal and think about what's coming. Today was a very tough opponent. We knew it, they are the last champion, of the Leagues Cup. They are a great team," Messi told Apple TV. "(Although they were) down a man, we suffered until the end and that shows what this team is," he said.

<h2>Meet again?</h2>

The champion of MLS is determined by the winner of the MLS Cup playoffs -- where Eastern Conference rivals the Crew and Miami could meet again.

Inter Miami have 68 points with two matches remaining, ensuring they'll finish the MLS campaign as the league's best record. If they win both games, they'll establish a new single-season points record.

Inter, the Eastern Conference top seeds, will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Columbus is second in the East with Cincinnati, who lost 3-2 to New York City, in third place. Orlando, who beat Philadelphia 2-1 are fourth.

The eighth and ninth-placed teams in each conference will meet in the wild-card round. The first round of the playoffs are played on a "best of three" basis with the top four teams given two home games. The conference semi-finals and finals are single-elimination games.

Messi said the Shield was a "secondary" prize for his team and said the MLS Cup title remains the main goal for the team.

"The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," he said. "The first round is three games but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home."

Seventh-placed Charlotte, coached by former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, secured the final automatic place in the East with Karol Swiderski scoring twice in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Fire.

Brazilian Gabriel Pirani scored twice in stoppage time as D.C. United came from behind to win 4-3 at Nashville and keep their hopes of a wild-card spot alive.

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi bags 46th career trophy with MLS Supporter Shield title

India is all set to make its debut in a new and unique sport as athletes will compete in surfing at the Asian Games 2026. The Games, which will be held in Japan, will be an opportunity for Indian surfers to showcase their talent. While the focus is on the 2026 Asian Games, the surfers in India got much-needed attention in Chennai’s Kovalam, a small town in India’s South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In an event hosted in sponsorship with Red Bull, popular Irish surfer Conor Maguire helped train 17 surfers while he was in the town for a surfing festival.

<h2>Conor in awe of the Indian coastline</h2>

“India has one of the longest coastlines and has an archipelago on both coasts, so the potential for waves here is awesome. I've noticed surfing hotspots on both coasts, clearly, India is an amazing place to come and surf. Travelling surfers bring a lot to the table. Those from Australia and Hawaii, they do really well,” Conor said while speaking to WION.

Red Bull has put in efforts towards strengthening the surfing ecosystem in India and mentoring young Indian surfers. He also reckoned the current facilities and hunger for success have got them going and helped them qualify for the Asian Games.

“Our end goal is to select an Indian surfer that Red Bull can support and sponsor. There's one girl who started as young as 3, her younger brother started as young as 7 months," Conor said about the Indian surfers he's been training at Kovalam.

The waves in Chennai are perfect for training as they are small and consistent. According to Conor, surfing is all about practice and repetition, contests usually take place in wave conditions like these.

While India prepares for the 2026 Asian Games, for now, the focus stays on the next crop of surfers as the long-term target remains the Olympic Games.

'India is an amazing place for surfing': Conor Maguire praises conditions

The dust is yet to settle on the heartbreaking disqualification that Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered at the Paris Olympics in August. In a shocking revelation on Wednesday (Oct 2), amid the Haryana Assembly election campaign, Phogat revealed that she had refused to speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also confessed that it was an indirect call from the Indian officials on terms that the conversation would be recorded.

<h2>Phogat makes shocking revelation</h2>

“The call had come (from the PM) but I refused to speak. The call did not come directly to me but Indian officials who were there informed me that he (PM Modi) wanted to talk. I was ready. However, they put conditions — no one from my team would be present, while two people from their side would record the conversation for social media,” she said in an interview with The Lallantop.

Phogat was controversially disqualified during the Paris Olympics in the 50 kg women’s category after being found overweight by 100 gm&nbsp;on the day of the final. The Indian wrestler had qualified for the gold medal match and would have scripted history had she won the big prize. However, her disqualification on August 11 came as a big blow to the nation’s hopes as India failed to win a single gold medal.

The 29-year-old then announced her decision to retire from the sport while an appeal was pending at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The appeal was later rejected with Phogat returning empty-handed. It was during this period that Phogat refused to speak to PM Modi and showed her discontent having been at the centre of the wrestler’s protest in 2023.

Immediately after retiring from wrestling, Phogat was approached by the Indian National Congress (INC), the biggest opposition party in India, to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in the state of Haryana. She has been nominated from the Julana seat and will contest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, India’s main ruling party) candidate Yogesh Bairagi, a former commercial pilot.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expects Diogo Jota to feature in their Champions League clash with Serie A side Bologna at Anfield, despite the Portuguese forward's absence from training on Tuesday.

Jota received a knock in the 2-1 Premier League win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday but is set to play instead of Federico Chiesa, who arrived at training on Tuesday with an injury.

The Italian winger joined Liverpool from Juventus in August and grabbed an assist in the 5-1 League Cup third-round rout of West Ham United but will miss out on facing familiar opponents on Wednesday.

"It's a shame for him because he was looking forward to a Champions League night at Anfield, and especially because we face an Italian team," Slot told reporters. "How long is he out? It's always difficult because it happened yesterday but I am not expecting him to be out for a very long period of time.

"We will see if he can be in the team for Saturday (league match at Crystal Palace)."

Liverpool are off to a strong start in Slot's first season in charge. They top the Premier League standings on 15 points, opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over AC Milan, and have booked their spot in the League Cup last 16.

"One of the reasons we can compete is we have a lot of quality. We have a lot of cohesion in the team. Those who are not playing are happy with us scoring and winning so those are two really positive things," Slot added.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister had kind words for how well the Dutchman has done in filling the huge shoes left by former manager Juergen Klopp.

"He's definitely an amazing manager. You can see how he's been from the first day," the Argentine said. "We understand what he wants from us, and I think that's the main thing as a coach -- to get the ideas in the players."

Liverpool are back in the Champions League after a one-year absence and Slot hopes to see the hunger reflected in his team on Wednesday.

"What I want from the players is them to show they missed this. I want to see this, I want to feel this," Slot said. "I am hoping it's the same from our fans. I hope they feel this desire to show Europe that you missed us."

Liverpool’s Arne Slot expects Diogo Jota to be fit for Champions League clash at home

England's aggressive approach will help when they face spin-friendly conditions in Pakistan during their test series in October, the country's former bowler Stuart Broad has said.

England will return to Pakistan for a red-ball series after defeating the hosts 3-0 in tests in 2022 when Harry Brook scored three centuries and spinners thrived.

Brendon McCullum's side, however, failed in similar spin-friendly conditions in India, where they lost a series 4-1 earlier this year.

Broad said England have got the players to deal with spin in Pakistan but will have to play with their ultra-aggressive style to get positive results.

"I think the style will work in Pakistan, for sure," Broad said ahead of the launch of Inside Lord's, Marylebone Cricket Club's (MCC) new digital platform. "I think they're really positive and aggressive, they can find the boundary and don't get tied down by spin.

"England will have to play fast-paced cricket to force results over there because you generally do need five days to make something happen."

England's fast-bowling unit, led by Chris Woakes and including Matthew Potts, Olly Stone, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, will be without experienced Mark Wood, who has an elbow injury, and skipper Ben Stokes, who is not yet fit to bowl.

<h2>Struggling Pakistan</h2>

Broad said Pakistan, who were defeated 2-0 at home by Bangladesh last month, would be looking to take advantage of England's inexperienced fast bowling lineup, but the visitors must capitalise on the hosts' underwhelming form.

"Pakistan have not been playing the best cricket. They've been struggling, so England should see that as a positive and go there trying to apply pressure to that team as soon as they possibly can," Broad said. "But we always know Pakistan, they've got world-class talent and players that can win a game on their own. It won't be an easy challenge.

"The surfaces (in Pakistan) were a bit slower and turned, but in their recent series they've had a bit of green grass on and carried through a bit more.

"I don't know which way Pakistan will lean on their pitches - they might leave a bit of grass on, seeing an inexperienced bowling group from England."

Broad said there had been an inconsistency in results with England's test style, but players must focus on the positives.

The youngsters might take time to adapt to it, but players like Jamie Smith were improving under McCullum and Stokes.

"It's been an amazing style for young players to learn their game and have amazing freedom. The key to it is the consistency in selection," Broad added.

The three-test series against Pakistan starts in Multan on October&nbsp;7.

England veteran Stuart Broad backs ‘Bazball’ to succeed in Pakistan

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has broken the silence on the most-talked-about IPL rule mentioned in the latest regulations issued by the BCCI – the return of the ‘uncapped player rule’. Karthik says this rule, which was there since the tournament’s inception and later discarded in 2021, is brought back by the board for just one man, MS Dhoni.

<h2>What does this ‘uncapped player rule’ mean?</h2>

Per the BCCI and IPL’s latest guidelines issued for the 2025-2027 window, any Indian player who last appeared for the national side at least five years ago to the upcoming auction date will be considered an uncapped player and can be retained under the ‘uncapped player rule’ by each of the ten franchises.

Although not many options are available with each team, the former five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a golden chance to retain their ex-captain and marquee player MS Dhoni under the ‘uncapped player category’ ahead of the mega auction later this year.

Dhoni last played for India during the 2019 World Cup in England, and with him already completing more than five years since, he is eligible to fall under this bracket. What’s more than this? CSK doesn't have to splurge money on his retention since his IPL future remains uncertain and can retain him for INR 4 crore.

<h3>What did Karthik say?</h3>

Dinesh Karthik, who last played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024, said he understands why this rule has been brought back, and that, he understands the dynamics behind it.

"Everybody talks about it. This rule is made for one man, and I am for it through and through. This man has been such a major part of what this IPL has been about. If everybody is in a happy place - be it BCCI, be it any of the teams, be it how the league has performed over the years and how it has kept players so happy over the last 15-18 years, this man has played a major role,” Karthik said during an interaction on Cricbuzz.

"You can ask any TV broadcaster, and you will get the answer that when this man steps on the field, the ratings go up. This is a fact. If you are going to do something that is going to help the league, why not? You don't want to bend and break the rules, but if it's a fair one, where all teams have been informed, and they all feel it's fair, let's go ahead. Why not? He is a special cricketer,” he continued.&nbsp;
