Los Angeles pitcher Jack Flaherty dominated over seven scoreless innings and the Dodgers shut out the New York Mets&nbsp;9-0 on Sunday in game one of Major League Baseball's National League Championship Series. Mookie Betts delivered a three-run double. Max Muncy drove in two runs and Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani singled in a run and electrified the Dodger Stadium crowd with a hit that threatened to clear the outfield wall.

But it was more stellar pitching, backed&nbsp;by lockdown defense and a disciplined performance at the plate that propelled the Dodgers to victory to start the best-of-seven series. "It's a lot of fun," Flaherty said. "You can't put it all into words. But the most important part was coming out and setting a tone."

The Dodgers pitchers have now tied the major league post-season record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings, set by the Baltimore Orioles over the first four games of the 1996 World Series against the Dodgers. "Each and every one of the pitchers has been doing their job exceptionally well and it's really setting the tone for the offensive part of the game to be able to feel comfortable and score runs," Ohtani said.

The Dodgers will try to double their series lead when they host game two on Monday. The winner of the series will advance to the World Series to face either the New York Yankees or Cleveland Guardians, who open the American League Championship Series on Monday.

It started with Flaherty, who retired the first nine batters he faced, giving up two hits and two walks with six strikeouts before departing with the Dodgers up 6-0. Meanwhile Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga lasted just four outs, his inability to throw strikes proving costly.

After retiring Ohtani to start the bottom of the first, Senga walked three straight batters to load the bases then gave up a single to Muncy that scored two runs. He walked Gavin Lux to open the second. Lux advanced to second on a sacrifice fly and scored when Ohtani cracked a sharp single to right field, spelling the end of Senga's day.

"He just didn't have it together," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

<h2>- Foot on the pedal -</h2>

The Dodgers put up three more runs in the fourth inning off Mets reliever David Peterson, who walked Enrique Hernandez to open the inning. Hernandez scored on a single by Tommy Edman and Ohtani then belted the ball to center field for a hit that was originally scored a double. Edman raced around for a run as Ohtani reached second on what was later ruled a throwing error -- one of three by New York.

Ohtani, serenaded with chants of "MVP" whenever he was at the plate, scored on a bloop single to left field by Freddy Freeman and it was 6-0 Dodgers. Flaherty got through the fifth without giving up a run with help from the Dodgers defense. Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker led off the inning with a single.

Jose Iglesias followed with a single and when Winker hesitated trying for third he was caught for the first out of another scoreless inning.

Betts boosted the score in the bottom of the eighth, belting a bases-loaded double to left field that scored all three runners and made it 9-0 -- the most lopsided shutout win in Dodgers playoff history.

Flaherty said those kind of statistics were largely irrelevant. "I can look on it and say that we did a good job today," he said.&nbsp; "It's a really good team over there, and we had a good game one, but we've got to come back tomorrow and keep our foot on the pedal, not let up at all."

LA Dodgers thrash NY Mets 9-0 in MLB playoff series opener

Pakistan has made wholesome changes to their playing XI for the second Test against England in Multan on Tuesday (Oct 15). The hosts have altered their bowling attack from the first Test at the same venue, which they lost by an innings and 47 runs. Pakistan lost despite scoring 556 in the first inning, forcing the newly formed selection committee to make drastic changes.

The selectors met twice in two days, dropping the three biggest names in the Pakistan Team for the remaining Tests – Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah. With two frontline seamers out of contention and Abrar Ahmed continuing to recover from high fever, Pakistan included three new faces:&nbsp;left-arm spinner Noman Ali, leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood, and off-spinner Sajid Khan, in the bowling attack, all three being spinners.

Pakistan also handed a debut cap to batter Kamran Ghulam, who will play in the fourth position.

Of the four bowlers used in the first match, only Aamer Jamal has retained his place, playing as the only seamer. If Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan decide against rolling over their arms in the second Test, it would be the first occasion that Pakistan will enter the field with just one pacer.

Meanwhile, with Pakistan’s domestic home season yet to begin, none of the bowlers picked have had any red-ball experience. While Noman last played a first-class game in October last year, Mahmood and Sajid haven’t played one since January 2024.

Such an inexperienced bowling attack could do either of the two things – play in England’s hands, with most of their batters in top-notch form and regular captain Ben Stokes returning to the playing XI, or spring a surprise and turning the tables on the visitors like the first Test defeat never occurred.

Pat Cummins is picked in Australia’s 14-man squad for the Pakistan ODIs starting November 4 in Melbourne. The ace seamer returns to the Australian team for the first time since the T20 World Cup in the Americas, with the selectors also picking pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Regular openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are out on paternity leaves; all-rounder Cameron Green will be away for the whole summer with a back injury.

Considering Pakistan ODIs are Australia’s last scheduled white-ball series before the Champions Trophy next year, the selectors and the management will use this to settle their best XI heading into the eight-team tournament in Pakistan.

While Cummins is unlikely to play a Sheffield Shield game before the India series beginning November 22, he might feature in the only one-day domestic match for New South Wales on October 25 before captaining Australia against the touring Pakistan side.&nbsp;

Cummins, however, might not even feature in all three games, given just a one-day gap between the second and third match and a long-distance flight between Adelaide and Perth.&nbsp;

Cummins’ bowling partners, Starc and Hazlewood, will be rotated for the same reason, but both hope to play at least one Shield match before the Pakistan series.

“This is our last ODI series before the Champions Trophy, and the balance of the squad was focused on that as well as continuing to focus on the preparation of individuals for the upcoming Test summer,” George Bailey said.&nbsp;

<h2>Stoinis returns; new opening pair ready</h2>

While Marcus Stoinis returned to the ODI squad for the first time since the 2023 World Cup in India, Australia will also have a new opening pair in Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk. Josh Inglis is picked as the lone keeper-batter, with the hosts extending all-rounder Aaron Hardie’s run in the coloured jersey.&nbsp;

Following the three ODIs, Australia will face Pakistan in as many T20Is from November 14 to 18, with no Test-bound players likely to get picked.&nbsp;

India lost to Australia in their final Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 group game on Sunday (Oct 13) in Sharjah, denting their chances of directly qualifying for the semis. That loss, however, doesn’t entirely rule out India’s chances of making it to the last four, as Pakistan, India’s arch-rival, can help them achieve their goal. Pakistan, who faces New Zealand in their final league match, must win to help India cruise ahead.

<h2>How can India still reach semis?</h2>

India lost their first match against New Zealand by 58 runs but won their next two against Pakistan and Sri Lanka&nbsp;respectively, to keep their semis hope alive. India needed to beat Australia by a considerable margin on Sunday to make it to the semis alongside the defending champions. But a loss, by a&nbsp;narrow margin,&nbsp;kept them hanging.

So, how can India still make it to the semis? Pakistan must beat New Zealand in the first place for this to become a reality.&nbsp;

If Pakistan wins on Monday (Oct 14), they, alongside India and New Zealand, will have four points each, with the Women in Blue marching ahead on better NRR.&nbsp;

However, for Pakistan to top India and New Zealand and reach the semis with their current NRR reading -0.488, they need a miraculous effort to go through.

But, if New Zealand beats Pakistan, both Asian teams will get knocked out of the tournament, with the White Ferns and Australia reaching the semis.

<h3>Coach Mazumdar wants team to learn after AUS loss</h3>

Australia beat India by nine runs, becoming the first team to qualify for the semis. They maintained their winning run, making it four in four matches in this competition.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India coach Amol Mazumdar reflected on the lost&nbsp;opportunity to make it to the semis with this India squad, saying the team must learn from this loss.

India dropped three catches, missed one stumping and had an LBW call that went against them during the Australia game.&nbsp;

"I think we were in the game right till the last over, just that experience of Australia saw them through," Muzumdar said after the game. "A little disappointed with the loss. I feel we've fielded pretty well. A couple of chances could've been taken and things could've been different."

How Pakistan can help India qualify for Women's T20 World Cup 2024 semis

Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey has ended all speculations over Steve Smith’s batting position against India in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Addressing the media ahead of the Pakistan white-ball series starting November 4, Bailey confirmed that Smith will return to his favourite number four position following his brief stint as a Test opener. He also confirmed that all-rounder Cameron Green will miss the marquee series against India.

Smith replaced David Warner at the top following his Test retirement. In his second match as an opener, Smith hit a gritty 91 against West Indies in Brisbane, although the visitors came on top in a famous win. Against New Zealand in the series after that, Smith struggled, scoring just 51 runs in four innings.&nbsp;

Green, who played at number four in Smith’s place, got ruled out of the summer after deciding to opt for the surgery on his back that troubled him lately.&nbsp;

Bailey confirmed that Captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald decided to bring Smith back to number four in Tests.

"Pat, Andrew and Steve Smith had been having ongoing conversations, separate to the untimely injury to Cameron (Green)," Bailey said as quoted by cricket.australia.au. "Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position, and Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order for the summer."

While Australia has three options to choose from in Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw to replace Smith at the top, Sam Konstas’ fireworks in the Sheffield Shield with twin tons have rocketed his chances of bagging his maiden Australia call-up for the India series.

<h2>Green to miss India series</h2>

On the other hand, a bigger problem lies ahead of the decision-makers in the Australian camp, with whom to replace Green in the playing XI. The lanky all-rounder will undergo lower spine surgery, sidelining him from any on-field cricket for at least six months.

Following lengthy consultations with CA’s medical team over the fortnight after his initial scans in the UK, Green decided to get the titanium cable infused into his lower back to stabilise the stress fracture and prevent future occurrences.

"Cam has a unique defect in an adjacent area to the fracture that is believed to be contributing to the injury," the statement said. "After thorough consultation, it was determined Cameron would benefit from the surgery to stabilise the defect and reduce the risk of future recurrence."

England interim manager Lee Carsley revealed on Saturday that he has not applied to take the job on a permanent basis.

Carsley stepped up from his role as England Under-21 coach on a temporary basis after Gareth Southgate quit following the Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

The 50-year-old had emerged as a front-runner for the post after leading England to victories over Ireland and Finland in his first two games in September.

But Carsley came under fire after his tactical experiment backfired in Thursday's embarrassing 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley.

Immediately after that Nations League tie, Carsley said he will "hopefully" be returning to the under-21s once England have played their next three matches, starting with Sunday's rematch with Finland.

He then appeared to backtrack, suggesting he wasn't ruling himself in or out of contention.

Asked ahead of the Finland game if he had applied for the job, Carsley told talkSPORT: "No, I didn't formally apply for it."

The FA posted an advert for the England men's senior team head coach job on its website shortly after Southgate departed.

The closing date for applications was August 2, with Carsley named interim boss on August 9.

Pushed on why he had not applied, Carsley said: "I have been doing the under-21s and I am really happy with my job.

"I am an employee of the FA and I was asked to take the senior team, which is a privilege. It was the proudest moment of my career.

"I am really honoured with the chance to manage the senior team. I am in a really fortunate position in that I am on the inside and I can see how much potential this team's got. It is one of the best jobs in world football.

"There aren't many jobs where you've got a chance of winning. I believe the coach that comes in has got a really good chance of winning and we deserve the best one that's out there."

England have arrived in Helsinki needing a win to get back on track in their bid to catch Group B2 leaders Greece.

Former Everton midfielder Carsley is not fretting over his future as he focuses instead on preparing his team.

"I don't see this as an audition at all," Carsley said. "I see it as simple as I was asked to take the team for three camps.

"It wasn't with a view to anything, it was literally do your best, try as hard as you can and look after the players and that is what I am doing."

ALSO READ: Ronaldo, Silva on scoresheet as Portugal beat Poland to maintain lead at top in Nations League Immediately after that Nations League tie, Carsley said he will "hopefully" be returning to the under-21s once England have played their next three matches, starting with Sunday's rematch with Finland. He then appeared to backtrack, suggesting he wasn't ruling himself in or out of contention. Asked ahead of the Finland game if he had applied for the job, Carsley told talkSPORT: "No, I didn't formally apply for it." Interim coach Lee Carsley confirms not applying for England head coach job

Portugal's Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo scored first-half goals in a comfortable 3-1 win away to Poland in the Nations League on Saturday as the Group A1 leaders continued their perfect start to the competition with three wins.

Silva put Portugal in front after 26 minutes, netting from Bruno Fernandes' headed assist, before captain Ronaldo got his 133rd international goal when he doubled the lead 11 minutes later with a first-time shot after Rafael Leao hit the post.

Piotr Zielinski pulled a goal back for Poland in the 78th with a powerful strike into the roof of the net before home defender Jan Bednarek netted an own goal in the dying minutes.

Portugal continue to set the pace in League A Group One with nine points, three points clear of Croatia who came from behind to beat visitors Scotland 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Poland, who beat Scotland 3-2 on the road in their opener before losing 1-0 in Croatia, are third with three points while the Scots have none so far.

The Poles started on the front foot and leading striker Robert Lewandowski came close to netting an early opener when he was inches from getting his head to a cross as Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa beat him to the ball.

Portugal, however, were quick to grow into the match and Poland keeper Lukasz Skorupski was put to work early when he blocked Diogo Dalot's effort from close range.

Ronaldo then hit the bottom of the bar as Portugal continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and their chances kept coming.

Fernandes put Skorupski to the test again with a curled shot from just outside the box in the 14th minute and the keeper had to stretch to tip the ball away.

<h2>Portugal Strike</h2>

Poland's vulnerable back line eventually capitulated when Silva struck before Ronaldo made it 2-0 with a calm finish.

Leao had recovered the ball near the halfway line and slalomed past four defenders before striking the post from inside the box leaving Ronaldo to slot home the rebound.

The 39-year-old Al-Nassr forward, who helped Portugal to 2-1 wins against Scotland and Croatia with a goal in each match, scored his 11th of the season for club and country.

He could have added a third after the restart but hesitated to finish from inside the area and instead found Fernandes, who sent the ball flying over the bar.

Poland got a glimmer of hope when Lewandowski had a chance a minute later as he climbed highest in the box to connect with a cross but sent his header narrowly wide of the left post.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez continued to manage Ronaldo's playing time, with Diogo Jota replacing him in the 63rd minute.

After playing practically every minute of every game at this year's Euros, Ronaldo was replaced by Jota late in the game with Croatia and only started in the second half against Scotland.

Zielinski's strike injected some life into the hosts but Poland lacked clear chances to equalise before Bednarek's own goal confirmed the end of their two-year unbeaten home run.

Ronaldo, Silva on scoresheet as Portugal beat Poland to maintain lead at top in Nations League

Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was left red-faced as a second-half strike by midfielder Martin Zubimendi gave an injury-hit Spain a hard-fought and deserved 1-0 win in Nations League Group A4 on Saturday.

Missing seven of the starters that beat England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final in July, Spain dominated proceedings from early on but it was not until the 79th minute that they managed to find the winner as Zubimendi netted his first goal for his country.

The Real Sociedad midfielder unleashed a first-time shot from the edge of the box that deflected off a defender before squirming under Schmeichel, who should have kept it out.

Spain lead the group at the halfway mark with seven points from their three games, followed by the Denmark on six and Serbia on four, with Switzerland bottom with no points.

"We are very happy, especially in such a tight game in which we had to dig deep to open the scoring," Zubimendi told TVE. "In the first half we didn't play our best football, we left some spaces open in the back that they exploited and could have hurt us but we fixed it in the second half, locked them up and got the job done."

Spain were missing Dani Carvajal and Rodri due to serious knee injuries while key players such as Nico Williams, Dani Olmo and Robin Le Normand were also absent.

They controlled the game but were wasteful, missing several chances to open the scoring, and were exposed on the counter, with goalkeeper David Raya making two brilliant saves from efforts by Kasper Dolberg.

Zubimendi and Alex Grimaldo wasted promising half-chances early in the game while captain Alvaro Morata missed a couple of clear opportunities later on.

The hosts should have led at the break but Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal missed an easy chance in the last action of the first half when he took a pass from Pedro Porro in his stride but blasted the ball over the bar.

Spain came out livelier in the second half and took the lead with a little help from Schmeichel who had made two magnificent saves to deny close-range efforts by Morata.

Yet when the ball was flung into the box, Schmeichel appealed for what he thought was a foul by Mikel Merino on Victor Nelsson and was then caught off-guard as Zubimendi's effort deflected off a defender's heel and slipped through the distracted goalkeeper's grasp.

Star Pakistan batter Babar Azam is set to be dropped from the playing XI for the second Test against England in Multan starting Tuesday (Oct 15). Shortly after England humbled Pakistan in the first game at the same venue by an inning and 47 runs, the newly formed selection committee met in Lahore on Friday (Oct 11), recommending Babar’s exclusion from the side for his betterment.

Per the latest reports, the selection committee, consisting of Aaqib Javed, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, the former ICC umpire Aleem Dar and analyst Hassan Cheema, met again on Saturday in Multan, this time in the presence of PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.&nbsp;

Although Test captain Shan Masood backed Babar in the immediate aftermath of the defeat, calling him ‘Pakistan’s best batter’, with Test coach Jason Gillespie sharing the same sentiments, the selection committee collectively felt a break from international cricket would help Babar revive his form.&nbsp;

The former Pakistan captain hasn’t scored a Test fifty since December 2022, with his last hundred across formats coming more than a year ago against Nepal during the 2023 Asia Cup.

As first reported in ESPNcricinfo, the selectors travelled to Multan on Saturday alongside the coach and the captain, with PCB curator Tony Hemming also joining them. At the meeting, some mentors backed Babar to retain his spot in the playing XI, but the majority was against it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, it remains unclear if Babar will return to playing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy beginning October 20, considering the right-handed batter has not participated in that first-class tournament since 2019.&nbsp;

<h2>Babar’s form a worry for him and Pakistan</h2>

Babar hasn’t played his best cricket in a very long time, with Pakistan facing subsequent challenges, the latest being losing a Test match on the flat Multan wicket against England.&nbsp;

Though the English pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook amassed 262 and 317 runs, respectively, in the only inning they batted in, Babar could score just 35 runs across two innings, beaten on the inside edge in the first inning and outside in the second.

It’s been 18 innings since Babar crossed a fifty-run mark, with his average reading just 21 in nine Tests since 2023.

Meanwhile, Babar is not the only one to face repercussions, with spinner Abrar Ahmed, who was hospitalised during the first Test, is highly unlikely to recover. The PCB is understood to be considering Noman Ali and Sajid Khan in his place. Besides, star seamer Shaheen Afridi might also miss the second Test. &nbsp;

India lost their tournament opener against New Zealand by 58 runs but won the remaining two matches against Asian giants Pakistan and Sri Lanka to stay alive in the semis race.

While Australia leads the points table with three wins from as many games, adding up to six points, India and New Zealand are placed second and third, respectively, with four points each and one game remaining.&nbsp;

For India to qualify directly for the last four, they must beat Australia by 61 runs (given India scores 150 by batting first).&nbsp;

In another case, if India beats Australia by 20 runs, they have to hope for a New Zealand win over Pakistan, but not more than 37 runs, for India to stay ahead on the NRR.&nbsp;

If Australia beats India, the women in blue can still cruise to the next round ahead of New Zealand if the margin of defeat is less than 16 runs.

However, if New Zealand wins their last group game, regardless of the margin, they will enter the semis, knocking India out.

On the other hand, Australia would be worried heading into the marquee clash, with Captain Alyssa Healy (acute right foot injury) and Tayla Vlaeminck (right shoulder dislocation) leaving the field in their previous match.&nbsp;

Their inclusion, however, would be a late call on Sunday.

<h3>Result Prediction -</h3>

Though India’s back is against the wall, given their stance on the points table, they can cause an upset in this blockbuster tie.

Predicted Playing XIs –

India - Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav/S Sajana, Arundhati Reddy, Shreyannka Patil, Renuka Thakur, Asha Sobhana

Australia - Beth Mooney (wk), Grace Harris, Ellyse Perry, Phoebe Litchfield, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, Tahlia McGrath (C), Annabel Sutherland, Sophie Molineux, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown/Alana King

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: India vs Australia in do-or-die Sharjah tie; match preview and result prediction

Suryakumar Yadav lauded Sanju Samson for his outstanding hundred in the 3rd T20I against Bangladesh in Hyderabad on Saturday (Oct 12), more so for playing a selfless knock and&nbsp;helping India amass the second-highest T20I total ever (297/6). While SKY slammed a stunning 75 off just 35 balls, Sanju hit his maiden T20I ton, hitting 111 in 47 deliveries, including 11 fours and eight sixes.

After failing to perform in the first two games, Sanju came good in the last match of the series. From 62 runs off 29 balls, Sanju raced to 92 off 35 deliveries after hitting five sixes in one over of Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain. Then on 96, he smashed offie Mahedi Hasan over his head to complete a 40-ball hundred – the second-fastest for an Indian in T20Is.

Reflecting on how Sanju paced his innings and even at a time when he could have carefully got to his century, he smashed one for a boundary, doing it fearlessly and selflessly, Suryakumar said the same approach is what he wants from his team, something the head coach Gautam Gambhir also echoed in the dressing room earlier.

"I think we have achieved a lot as a team," Suryakumar said during the post-match presser.&nbsp;

"Most importantly, as I said at the start of the series, I want to have selfless cricketers in my team. We want to be a selfless team, and as Hardik [Pandya] said, we want to just enjoy each others' performance on the field and off the field and spend as much time as possible, and that camaraderie is carrying on the field, and we're having some fun."

"The chat around the team has been like that. Gauti bhai said the same thing at the start of the series and when we went to Sri Lanka as well: 'No one is bigger than the team'. If you're at 99 or 49 or anything, if you feel you've to hit the ball out of the park for the team, you have to hit it, and Sanju did the same thing. Really happy for him,” he continued.

<h2>‘Flexibility benefitting us’&nbsp;</h2>

Suryakumar also stressed on players being flexible with their roles in the T20I team. With most of the top players rested for Bangladesh T20Is, the Indian Team had several debutants and emerging players in the XI in the three contested matches, with SKY dictating terms on what is needed out of whom.

"We've to be very flexible when it comes to batting and bowling as well," Suryakumar said.&nbsp;

"Everyone has to chip in with few overs who can, and batters have to be very flexible. The way they showed it in the series was very commendable."

"Just [have to] maintain the good habits and continue that on the field and just be the same,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Team India will host New Zealand for three Tests at home, with the first match beginning on Wednesday (Oct 16) in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

In case the batting team loses five wickets before the stipulated overs are finished, the last batter will continue batting, with the fifth batter acting as a runner. The final batter will be on strike till he gets out or the innings is concluded.

Each batter is forced to retire at a score of 31; however, he can return after all other batters are dismissed or retired.

The 12 participating teams will be divided into four pools of three sides, competing in a round-robin format.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the bottom-placed team in each pool will play the Bowl Competition.

A total of 29 matches will be played in the three-day tournament.

Besides, a Women’s Exhibition Match will also take place on November 3 (the last day) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Hong Kong Sixes: Veteran batter Robin Uthappa to lead India’s six-man squad

The Indian Team has been on a winning spree. The Men in Blue were victorious against Bangladesh in the first two T20Is, with the final game scheduled on Saturday (Oct 12) in Hyderabad. Having already pocketed the series, India has only a clean sweep on its mind in the dead rubber. Here is the match preview and result prediction for the final India vs. Bangladesh T20I.

<h2>Match Preview –</h2>

Gautam Gambhir’s tenure has begun with a bang, although the loss to Sri Lanka in away ODIs looked up to as the only dent thus far.&nbsp;

The young Indian Team has delivered fearlessly in the shortest format, setting a different template altogether. Despite a handful of top names rested for this series, the hosts haven’t put a foot wrong, with emerging stars making the most of their chances.&nbsp;

Local boy Nitish Kumar Reddy is one name everyone will look forward to watching in Hyderabad, while Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya will have the onus on them.

Given India has nothing to lose in this game, they can try their bench strength, with Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana getting a game. Though India could give Mayank Yadav an extended run, Arshdeep’s seniority in the attack might work against him, and Rana could play ahead of Mayank.

Ravi Bishnoi could also return to the playing XI, with India resting Varun Chakaravarthy for the final T20I.

On the other hand, Bangladesh would like to cap off this bilateral tour with a consolation win, giving a fitting send-off to their veteran Mahmudullah, who will retire after this match.

Although Bangladesh’s batting failed to fire in the two contested matches, the tourists would continue to bank on their heavy top order to put up a fighting show.&nbsp;

Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed will hold the keys in the bowling department, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz will play a handy role in deciding his team’s fate in Hyderabad.

<h3>Result Prediction –</h3>

Bangladesh might push above their weight in this final game; however, India would enter the match as favourites.

India vs Bangladesh 2024, 3rd T20I: Match preview and result prediction

A strong back nine capped by an eagle on the par-five 17th propelled Japan's Mao Saigo into a one-stroke lead Saturday heading into the final round at Buick LPGA Shanghai.

Saigo carded a seven-under-par 65 to edge out surging home hope Yin Ruoning, the highest-ranked player in the field, who shot a stunning 63 in her third round.

Among Saigo's highlights was lobbing a tricky chip shot from the rough on the par-five fourth hole, landing the ball softly on the fringe and watching it roll straight into the cup for birdie.

"I knew that scores and standings were changing throughout the day," said the 23-year-old Saigo, adding that she "just concentrated on playing (her) best".

"I made some good shots and made that last long putt that put me into the lead," she added, referring to her eagle roll from distance on the 17th green.

Hot on her tail was China's 22-year-old Yin, current world number four and champion of last year's Women's PGA Championship.

Yin started strong, shooting 32 in a front-nine performance that saw her chip in for birdie on the par-three seventh hole.

Yin really pumped up the home crowd at the 17th-hole green, eliciting huge cheers when she sank a mid-length putt for eagle and a brief outright lead.

"Today there was a bigger crowd and I always hear people rooting my name," said Yin.

"I just really, really enjoy playing at home and I hope I can keep the momentum going for the last day," she added.

"I think tomorrow I'm playing as a chaser."

Former world number one Kim Sei-young of South Korea had led after each of the first two rounds but slid to third place after shooting a 69, three strokes behind Saigo.

Behind Kim came Yealimi Noh of the United States at a three-day combined score of 13 under par, followed by a six-way tie for fifth place at 11 under.

Lucy Li of the United States finished with an even-par 72 on the day, falling into the crowded tie for fifth after beginning the day alongside Saigo in second place.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente backed midfielder Martin Zubimendi on Friday to deputise for injured star Rodri Hernandez in the months ahead.

Manchester City's Rodri, a key player for his country, suffered a severe knee injury in September and will be out for the rest of the season.

Rodri was vital in holding midfield as Spain clinched Euro 2024 victory this summer but Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi, 25, also made a big impact in the final.

Zubimendi replaced the injured Rodri at half-time against England in the Berlin final as La Roja triumphed 2-1 with two goals after the break.

"Zubimendi has been playing (brilliant) games for a long time, if Rodri is the best player then Zubimendi is the second best in this position," De la Fuente told a news conference.

"He's got experience under his belt; he oozes security through every pore of his skin. "Martin doesn't get nervous... he's a very mature player, so calm... Zubi is a sure bet, who never fails."

Nations League champions Spain, second in group A4, host leaders Denmark on Saturday in Murcia, before welcoming Serbia to Cordoba on Tuesday.

They are also without Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal, who is also set to miss the season with a knee injury, and explosive winger Nico Williams with a minor knock, among others.

"We're not going to cry, we're not going to make excuses about missing players, the ones who are here are very good too, also the best (players in the world) for me," continued the coach. "Whoever is playing tomorrow in the place of Nico, or Rodri, or Dani, are absolutely great... they will give us more tactical richness.

"We're not going to change anything in terms of our plan or our idea of football... the idea is very clear."

De la Fuente said injuries were the "ugliest" part of football, but they also created opportunities.

"Nobody is irreplaceable... those who get the chance, albeit for unfortunate reasons, it's the time to take advantage of it," added De la Fuente.

Nations League: Spain coach De la Fuente handpicks Rodri’s replacement, says ‘nobody is irreplaceable’

Deniz Undav scored twice as Germany defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 to edge closer to the Nations League quarter-finals on Friday as 10-man Netherlands rescued a 1-1 draw in Hungary.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz laid on a backheel for Undav's opener after 30 minutes in Zenica.

The Stuttgart forward then made it two when he turned in Maximilian Mittlestaedt's cross.

Bosnia hit back with 20 minutes remaining when 38-year-old former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko headed in from a corner for his 67th international goal.

"After they scored, things heated up a bit, but we controlled things confidently," Undav, making just his second international start, told German broadcaster RTL.

The win moves Germany onto seven points from three games, two ahead of the Netherlands with the heavyweights facing each other on Monday in Munich.

"We scored too few goals for the number of chances we had," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

At the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary and Dutch players, as well as spectators, observed a minute's silence in memory of former Netherlands great Johan Neeskens who passed away this week at the age of 73.

Hungary took the lead in the 32nd minute when Roland Sallai scored with a close-range finish after being teed up by Zsolt Nagy.

It was the perfect start to the game for Hungarian coach Marco Rossi who was taking charge of the national team for the 69th time.

<h2>'We were going to score'</h2>

Hungary were looking at defeating the Dutch in the teams' first meeting since they were mauled 8-1 in 2013.

That prospect brightened when Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk was red-carded in the 79th minute.

However, four minutes later, the Dutch made a mockery of their one-man disadvantage when Denzel Dumfries headed in a free-kick from Cody Gakpo.

"Even with ten men, we tried to put pressure forward," said Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman. "I did think we were going to score."

Wales squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Iceland in Reykjavik.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson, scoring for the seventh consecutive game for club and country, and Harry Wilson gave Craig Bellamy's team a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break but Iceland hit back in the second half.

Substitute Logi Tomasson cut the deficit in the 69th minute before Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward allowed a 72nd minute drive from the same player to bounce off his elbow and into the net.

"In the long run, I'm really happy. And this is not me trying to sugar-coat drawing after being 2-0 up, it really isn't," said Bellamy. "What I'm telling you now, I told the players. This was really good."

In the same group, Turkey defeated Montenegro 1-0.

Elsewhere on Friday, Sweden let slip a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 in Slovakia, a result which left both teams on seven points from three games but with the Swedes ahead on goal difference in their group.

Yasin Ayari and Ken Sema had Sweden 2-0 up after 32 minutes in Bratislava but Slovakia battled back for a point thanks to a brace from David Strelec.

Tomas Chory scored twice to give the Czech Republic a 2-0 home win over Albania.

The Czechs are level on six points with pool leaders Georgia who lost 1-0 to Ukraine thanks to Mykhailo Mudryk's 35th-minute cool finish.

Nations League: Germany inch closer to QFs with win over Bosnia; 10-man Dutch draw against Hungary

Australia Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins is clear about his priorities to remain fit and available for his country over any franchise-based league worldwide. Cummins, a leader of the highest quality, helped Australia taste success in two ICC events last year – the World Test Championship Final and ODI World Cup, with both wins coming against India. However, appointed SunRisers Hyderabad captain ahead of the previous edition, Cummins said he is unbothered by new IPL rules surrounding overseas players.

The new IPL ruling allows the governing council to ban any overseas player who decides to skip the following edition after getting picked in the auction for reasons barring health and emergency, from the league for two years. Given several players, mostly English continued this practice over the years, the IPL decision-makers have put a full stop to it.

Meanwhile, part of the IPL set-up for over a decade now, Cummins has never sidelined himself after getting picked in the auction. Though he prioritised playing for Australia ahead of anything else, Cummins has also abided by his commitment to his IPL teams over the years.

During an exclusive chat with the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins showed no reluctance at IPL’s new ruling on overseas players.&nbsp;

“I’ll work out in the next little bit what this season looks like. There’s a bit of a tweak in the rules, but I don’t know whether that would have affected me in the past, I’ve never pulled out after the auction. But it is one more factor to consider with the IPL.&nbsp;

“Test cricket is the absolute No. 1 priority, World Cups are right up there, and then I think you use them as your tent poles and work out what else makes sense around that," Cummins said.

<h2>Cummins readies for Border-Gavaskar series</h2>

With Australia scheduled to play five Tests against India at home, starting in Perth on November 22, Cummins has already begun his preparations.&nbsp;

Cricket Australia rested the star seamer for the UK Tour to have a refreshed Cummins available for the marquee Border-Gavaskar series.

With Australia hosting Pakistan in the white-ball series, it remains to be seen if the selectors pick the pace trio of Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood or rest them for evident reasons.

Meanwhile, with one eye on the IPL retention list, whose submission's last date is October 31, SRH will retain Cummins, with several Indian players in the queue to join the list, including Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Umran Malik. SRH would also like to retain Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen.&nbsp;

The father of Spurs star Son Heung-min has been ordered by a South Korean court to pay a fine of three million won ($2,220) for violating child welfare law at his football school, reports said.

Son Woong-jung is a former footballer who wrote a best-selling memoir detailing how he helped his son become one of the best strikers in the English Premier League.

But earlier this year the parents of a young player at his football academy said their son was hit by coach Son Heung-yun, the brother of the Spurs player, leaving a large bruise on his left thigh.

South Korean court slaps fine on Son Heung-min’s father over football school abuse

England Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes could return to the playing XI for the second Test against Pakistan in Multan starting Tuesday (Oct 15). Stokes missed the first Test after failing to recover from the torn hamstring sustained in August. Ollie Pope captained the team in his absence, guiding them to a historic win in Multan by an innings and 47 runs.

Following England's greatest Test win in Asia, also the biggest (by runs), Pope hinted at Stokes' much-awaited return to the playing XI for the next game, boosting England's chances of bagging successive series win in Pakistan.

Although he did not confirm his participation, Pope revealed Stokes had trained well the past week, showing keenness in getting back.

<h2>Who sits out if Stokes returns?</h2>

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said considering Stokes is returning from an injury, he cannot play as one of the three seamers in case he replaces Chris Woakes in the XI. The right-arm seamer could be an addition to the pace attack of Woakes, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, with Shoaib Bashir and Jack Leach certain to retain their places.

In that case, England will have to leave out a batter, potentially either opener Ben Duckett, who suffered a thumb injury in the first innings, or the stand-in captain Pope.

Hussain feels given how Duckett played through his 84-run knock in the first innings, he might retain his place, leaving England with only one option remaining, dropping Pope for Stokes.

"Pope almost gave things away [in his interview] that Stokes will be fit, but he can't play as one of only three seamers, that is for certain," Hussain said, as quoted by Sky Sports. "He has to be one of four, leaving either a spinner or batter vulnerable.

"If he's playing as a batter only, then Ollie Pope is the most vulnerable. I know he's captain, but he won't be if Ben plays.

"It's a tricky one: if he can bowl a bit, you could maybe bring him in for the second spinner.

"If it's the same sort of pitch, it won't spin much, not until day four or day five, so could Stokes maybe come in for Shoaib Bashir?"

Meanwhile, following the second Test in Multan, the teams will travel to Rawalpindi for the final match of the three-match series.

PAK v ENG 2024: England captain Ben Stokes eyes return in second Test in Multan

Novak Djokovic dug out a 6-7(4) 6-1 6-4 win over Czech Jakub Mensik on Friday to advance to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, where he will face Taylor Fritz.

The four-times Shanghai champion managed to raise his level after losing the first set on a tiebreak and never looked back as he beat his 19-year-old opponent to enter the semi-finals for a ninth time.

The Serb, who played his first match on the ATP Tour over a year before his opponent was born in September 2005, initially struggled to counter Mensik's serve but found his rhythm and broke for a 5-4 lead in the first set.

However, the 24-times Grand Slam champion allowed his unseeded opponent to hit back instantly and with a foothold in the contest Mensik clinched the tiebreak as Djokovic hit a forehand into the net.

The 37-year-old did well to recover, taking advantage of a string of unforced errors from Mensik to hold serve on either side of an early break as he took a 3-0 lead in the second set.

Mensik, playing in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final, had no answer to the relentless accuracy of Djokovic's forehand and was broken once again as the fourth seed levelled the match at a set apiece.

Djokovic won the first point of the decider with a pin-point forehand at the end of an epic 33-shot rally and ran Mensik ragged with his power and precision. He broke for a 3-2 lead, which ultimately proved decisive despite an apparent knee issue for the Serb late in the match.

Djokovic is looking to win a record-extending fifth title in Shanghai, as well as his first ATP Masters 1000 title since his victory in Paris last year.

He will face world number seven Fritz in the semi-finals after the American defeated Belgian David Goffin 6-3 6-4 earlier on Friday.

In the other semi-final, world number one Jannik Sinner will take on Czech Tomas Machac.

Novak Djokovic downs Jakub Mensik to reach Shanghai Masters semis

Nottingham Forest have been fined 750,000 pounds ($979,500) and warned for misconduct in relation to a social media post criticising the referee after their Premier League defeat by Everton last season, the Football Association said on Friday.

Forest were angered at being denied three penalty claims in the 2-0 loss and minutes after the game they issued a statement on social media platform X accusing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Stuart Attwell of being a Luton Town fan.

At the time, Forest were involved in a relegation battle with Luton but they eventually finished 17th while Luton went down.

"The club denied that the comments posted on social media imply bias and/or question the integrity of the match officials and/or the video assistant referee and/or bring the game into disrepute," the FA said in a statement. "An independent Regulatory Commission found the charge to be proven following a hearing and imposed the club's sanctions."

At the time, Forest said on X: "Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept.

"We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn't change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options."

Forest, who said they would appeal the decision, had asked for the fine to be suspended but the FA rejected the request.

"We are particularly concerned that the FA, in its submissions, sought a sanction 'in excess of 1,000,000 pounds'," Forest said in a statement. "We believe that this request, along with the subsequent fine, is wholly disproportionate and the club will be appealing the decision."

FA fines Nottingham Forest £75,000 for social media post targeting VAR last season

The PCB could reportedly sack Shan Masood as the Test captain after Pakistan's embarrassing inning and 47 runs defeat against England in the first Test in Multan. The hosts attained several unwanted records in their shallow performance, becoming the first team in all of Test history to lose a Test by an inning after scoring over 500 runs (556) in the first inning.&nbsp;

Per the latest reports emerging out of Pakistan's Samaa TV, the board might sack Masood ahead of the start of the second Test at the same venue on Tuesday (Oct 15), with Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel and Salman Ali Agha handpicked as options to replace him.

Masood was among the two centurions for Pakistan in the first Test but failed to guide his team to a maiden Test win under his leadership, losing all six matches he led. Besides, Multan's Test result was Pakistan's seventh loss in this format at home since 2022.&nbsp;

Shortly after the PCB removed Babar Azam from all-format captaincy late last year, the board appointed Masood as the new Test skipper. Since his appointment, Pakistan faced Australia in an away series, Bangladesh at home, and now hosting England (with the first Test over), losing all.&nbsp;

With the pressure piling on the captain and the team, who are languishing at the bottom of the current WTC standings, the board is bound to react strongly.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, right after the game was over, Masood reflected on the shocking loss, saying it was a team game and that Pakistan would return to the drawing board working on turning the tables around in the remaining two matches.

"We love playing the game, we're hurt by the results, we're hurt as a nation, but need a quick turnaround. We're not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We have to get this right as a squad," Masood said to the reporters after the first Test.&nbsp;

<h2>England hurt Pakistan in Multan</h2>

After Pakistan scored a whopping 556 in the first innings, England went bonkers in theirs, scoring 267 more than that (823/7 dec), with Joe Root (262) and Harry Brook (317) adding 454 for the fourth wicket – the highest partnership for any pair for any wicket for England in Tests.

Pakistan failed to gain momentum in the second innings, losing six wickets inside 150 at stumps on day four. The first session on day five was a mere formality for the tourists, who wrapped up Pakistan's innings in no time.&nbsp;

Shambles! Pakistan fall to a new low, loses Multan Test against England by an inning

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood reflects on his side's embarrassing performance in the first Test in Multan, which they lost by an inning and 47 runs. Pakistan scored 556 in the first innings yet lost the game with one inning left, becoming the first team in Test history to attain this unwanted record.&nbsp;

"We've spoken about the third innings, but it's a team game, when you put 550 on the board, it's important to back it up with ten wickets, and that's what we didn't do. That's the key, how can the batting and bowling in the first innings contribute to a lead. The onus is to set the game up well and finish it off," Masood said after England wrapped up Pakistan on 220 in their second innings.

Test cricket is the ultimate format, the best teams find a way. Scoring runs and taking wickets are the non-negotiables," he continued.
