New Zealand beat India by eight wickets to win the first Test in Bengaluru on Sunday (Oct 20), ending 36-year wait of bagging a Test victory in the country. Chasing a mere 107 on the final day, the Kiwis lost both openers to Jasprit Bumrah, but Will Young and Rachin Ravindra ensured a smooth ride afterwards. Besides, this is New Zealand’s third Test win in India, with the first two coming in Nagpur (1969) and Mumbai (1988).

A win in Bengaluru sees New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Meanwhile, the first Test had everything a cricket fan would wish for - from drama to action, from a team getting all out under 50 to the same side smashing the most runs in an innings in this match. Besides, three players scored centuries of the highest order.

After day one got washed out due to the rain and wet outfield, New Zealand seamers made merry with the new ball inside the first two sessions on the second day, dismissing India on 46 – their lowest Test total at home and third-lowest overall.

In reply, the Kiwis took a 134-run lead before stumps were called on day two. Day three was all about New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who hit a fantastic 134, helping his team take a massive 356-run lead in the first innings.

Though the lead was daunting, Rohit Sharma’s men ensured they remained unbothered by it. Unlike how it panned out in the first innings, both openers began with the onslaught, with the skipper charging and completing a fifty soon. Following his wicket, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan added 136 for the third wicket before Glenn Phillips picked up Kohli on the last ball of day three to dent India’s momentum.

Day four drama and Pant’s masterclass

Day four was a dream day for the Indian fans. While Sarfaraz was inching closer to his maiden Test hundred in the first session, Pant was waiting at the other end to unleash himself. The pair wreaked havoc, adding 177 for the fourth wicket, with India’s scorecard reading 408 for three at one stage.

The situation, however, changed soon after with the introduction of the second new ball, with the seamers making the most of it. While the rookie seamer William ORourke returned with three wickets, including removing Pant on 99 – his seventh score in the 90s in Tests, Henry picked as many wickets to wrap up India’s innings on 462, with them needing 107 runs to win.

Although the bad light forced the umpires to call off play late on day four, Bumrah made early inroads in the final innings by removing Kiwi skipper Tom Latham, trapped in front on a duck.

Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj kept beating the edges, with Bumrah later picking Devon Conway similarly. That, however, was the last wicket of the day, with Rachin and Young stitching a 75-run partnership for the third wicket to see New Zealand through.

IND v NZ 2024: New Zealand win in Bengaluru, bags first Test victory in India in 36 years

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold is not disturbed by the growing speculation around his future at the Premier League club and is fully focused on matters on the pitch, head coach Arne Slot said.

The 26-year-old England right back has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid with his Liverpool contract running out at the end of the season. Alexander-Arnold last month said his contract situation will not be played out in public.

Having come through the ranks at Anfield and captaining the club across its youth levels, Alexander-Arnold has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and the Club World Cup among other major honours since making his senior debut for Liverpool in 2016.

Captain Virgil van Dijk and winger Mohamed Salah are also out of contract at the end of the campaign.

"I think you underestimate our players. These players are used to being linked with all the top clubs on a daily basis, if they have contracts or not," Slot told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League home clash against Chelsea.

"If you think they're disturbed by this interest then you don't do justice to how strong they are mentally. This is part of our job. This is part of this world we are living in. You just focus on what you have to do.

"Maybe if you're 17 or 18 years of age it could be difficult for you. But Trent has won the league, has won the Champions League; Virgil and Mo the same. I don't think that is a problem for them to perform and that's what we see at the moment because they're playing really well."

Liverpool, who top the Premier League table with 18 points from seven matches, suffered a blow with first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker facing a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Slot said he expects the 32-year-old Brazil international to return before Christmas.

"But you never know. It is always difficult to know how an injury will go in the first stages, so we can answer that question better in two or three weeks' time," the Dutchman added.

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min and forward Richarlison are fit to face West Ham United in the Premier League after recovering from injury, manager Ange Postecoglou said on Friday.

Son has missed the last three games after injuring his hamstring against Qarabag in the Europa League late last month. The 32-year-old also sat out of South Korea's two World Cup qualifying matches during the international break.

Richarlison, who picked up a calf injury in training in August, could feature for just the third time this season, Postecoglou said.

"Sonny is good and worked hard the last two weeks. Good for him the two weeks, he's had a solid week and looking to get back out there," Postecoglou told reporters ahead of Saturday's match.

"We've taken our time with Richy and we have taken time to build his fitness base up. He has worked hard, trimmed down, and looks lean. He's good to go now."

The north London club have come through the international break with no fresh injury concerns, with midfielder Lucas Bergvall also doing well after pulling out of Sweden's squad earlier this week.

Spurs, who are ninth in the standings, threw away a two-goal lead at Brighton & Hove Albion in their final match before the international break, ending a run of five wins in a row, and Postecoglou gave a scathing assessment of that performance.

"The question is 'why were we so good in the first half (against Brighton) and so poor in the second?'" the Australian said. "We were really passive with and without the ball. We lacked real conviction and courage in everything we did. It was almost like we felt like we had done enough."

Returning to the principles that served Spurs so well before the Brighton defeat would be key to getting a positive result in the London derby, he added.

"An important game... a good challenge for us," Postecoglou said. "The emphasis has to be on us reproducing the form we've shown in recent times and more importantly sticking to principles of our game."

The Dodgers, who were hoping to close out the series at the Mets' Citi Field, instead will host game six on Sunday, again with a chance to return to the World Series for the first time since they won it all in 2020.

"We'll be ready," Alonso said. "We love opportunities."

Andy Pages homered twice for the Dodgers, including a three-run blast that cut New York's lead to 10-5 in the fifth inning. Mookie Betts's solo homer in the sixth pulled the Dodgers within four, but the Mets held on.

Starling Marte belted three doubles, driving in three runs on four hits for New York. Francisco Lindor had three hits and Francisco Lindor and Jesse Winker both plated runs with triples for the Mets, who had 14 hits with no strikeouts.

"I think it's just an incredible effort from the whole group," Alonso said. "I mean, it was just unbelievable execution."

The winner of the series will take on either the New York Yankees or Cleveland Guardians in the World Series.

The Guardians were aiming to level the best-of-seven American League Championship Series when they hosted game four later Friday.

Cleveland clawed a game back to make it 2-1 with a thrilling come-from-behind triumph on Thursday.

The Yankees are trying to return to the World Series for the first time since winning their record 27th title in 2009.

The Guardians, who last reached the World Series in 2016, haven't captured the crown since 1948.

The Mets, with their backs against the wall, came out firing.

They seized a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Alonso's towering home run to center field that also scored Lindor and Brandon Nimmo -- who had singled and walked.

Mets show up

The Dodgers pulled a run back with two out in the second when Enrique Hernandez raced home on a wild pitch from Mets pitcher David Peterson to Shohei Ohtani.

But the Mets poured it on in the third when Marte made Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty pay for walking Alonso and Winker to open the frame, belting a double up the left field line that scored both.

Flaherty retired two batters before the Mets put together three straight run-scoring hits: Alvarez's single, a Lindor triple to the right field corner and a single by Nimmo that made it 8-1.

Peterson surrendered a solo home run to Pages with two outs in the top of the fourth. The Dodgers continued to press, loading the bases before Mets reliever Reed Garrett struck out Freddy Freeman to end the inning.

The Mets pushed their lead to 10-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Dodgers just couldn't close the gap.

"We showed up today," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "Obviously Pete setting the tone in the first inning was important. We just continued to add on. "And we needed to continue to add on because we saw it. They're not going to shut down. They're going to continue to put pressure on you."

They're going to continue to put pressure on you." Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. IND v NZ 1st Test: Sarfaraz Khan hits maiden Test hundred in Bengaluru as India cuts deficit, internet reacts

Nathan Lyon admits feeling responsible for carrying on the craft of spin bowling left behind by late veteran cricketer Shane Warne. Speaking ahead of the marquee Test series against India starting late November (22), Lyon said he felt his duty to keep the spin bowling ‘cool’ after Warne’s sudden death two years ago.

With 530 Test wickets to his name, Lyon, 36, insists he has no plans to retire soon, with him eyeing a series win in India and England before hanging his boots.

Although Lyon admitted he is not worried about spin bowling after he goes or who takes over his place in the Test side, the right-arm spinner wants to be the flag-bearer of this section of bowling till he’s actively playing.

"I do see the responsibility of flying the flag for the spinners around the country, there is no hiding behind that," Lyon said. "Especially with the passing of Warnie, I feel like there is a big role for me to ensure that spin stays cool.

"I am not cool in any way, but if I can try and promote spin bowling and promote how great it is to be a spin bowler ... it's pretty cool,” he continued.

Meanwhile, much like Warnie, who was known for his unbelievable skillset and more so for his longevity, having played and dominated in the pace-bowling era since his debut, Lyon falls under the same bracket, having played 100 Tests straight, although he missed a few Tests during the away Ashes last year with a rare calf injury.

Lyon revealed a close-net conversation with his father helped him realise the duty to promote spin bowling since Warne’s death.

"Just having that conversation and understanding we're role models in so many different ways to so many different people around the world," he said. "And if we can do our little bit to hopefully make people better cricketers or people, we're doing our job."

Lyon up for Border-Gavaskar series

Having last won the BGT nearly a decade ago at home, Lyon is keen on tasting success against the high-flying Indian Team again. Given India beat Australia in Australia twice in the past two outings, an unbelievable feat, they will enter the contest this time as firm favourites.

The first Test begins in Perth, with Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney scheduled to host the remaining ones.

Meanwhile, India and Australia are leading the World Test Championship (WTC) standings in the current cycle.

Australia’s Nathan Lyon happy to carry spin legacy following Shane Warne’s death

Pakistan beat England by 152 runs to win the second Test in Multan, their first home win in four years and under Shan Masood’s captaincy. The protagonists, however, were the two spinners, Sajid Khan and Noman Ali, who were included in the side following Pakistan’s embarrassing loss in the first match, alongside debutant Kamran Ghulam, who slammed his maiden Test ton.

Following the formation of the new selection committee, chaired by ex-cricketer Aaqib Javed, the PCB and Pakistan Cricket took some stern calls after the first Test loss by dropping Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah. Though it made headlines worldwide, this decision paid dividends, as three of the four changes for the next game helped them win a home Test after a long time.

‘Please end these petty talks’ – Amir tears into Babar Azam’s critics after Pakistan end win drought vs ENG

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka's injury is not serious and they are hopeful he will be available for their Premier League trip to Bournemouth on Saturday after picking up a problem on England duty, manager Mikel Arteta has said.

The 23-year-old was forced off during England's shock 2-1 loss to Greece in the Nations League at Wembley last week with a slight hamstring issue. Saka returned to Arsenal for further assessment, missing England's 3-1 win away to Finland.

Saka has scored two goals and provided seven assists in seven Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season.

"(Saka) is not a serious injury," Arteta told reporters on Friday. "He is evolving really well. He has done a few things in the last two days. He wasn't fit enough to play with the national team in the second game, but we are hopeful.

"We have a training session this afternoon. He did some bits yesterday, let's see if he can make it on time."

Another injury concern is Kai Havertz after the forward missed Germany's Nations League matches against Bosnia and the Netherlands due to a knee problem. Brazilian left winger Gabriel Martinelli is also doubtful for the Bournemouth match.

Havertz, 25, has been enjoying a fine campaign, netting four times in seven Premier League games.

"He had a few issues, and we have been dealing with that. He has been absolutely brilliant. He has very good communication with the national team and the manager," Arteta said. "We have modified everything we could do here and if he trains well today, he has a good chance to be fit and available.

"Gabi landed yesterday afternoon here, so we had a very short time to be with him," added the Arsenal coach. "Yesterday he went outside to do a little bit and see how he is feeling, and today will be another step. (We will see) if we want to take the risk if he is fit because I know what the player is going to say."

Captain Martin Odegaard will miss Saturday's game as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, but Arteta said next week will be crucial to see how close the Norway midfielder is.

Last season's runners-up Arsenal are third in the standings with 17 points from seven matches and trail leaders Liverpool by a point. Bournemouth are 13th on eight points.

England Manager

Arteta was also asked about the appointment of German Thomas Tuchel as England manager.

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel is the first German to manage England and only the third foreigner after the late Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden and Italian Fabio Capello.

Arteta described Tuchel as one of the best coaches in the world.

"I understand it can feel sad for some people not to have an English manager there and the history tells you as well how important this could be but I think I would take a lot of pride that a lot of managers ... would do anything to become the England manager," Arteta added.

"I can say personally that you feel so related to where you are even though you are not from here and I think that is a huge thing. I think very few countries can say that."

Premier League: Bukayo Saka expected to be fit for Bournemouth game, confirms Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists new England manager Thomas Tuchel deserves to be supported "unconditionally" after criticism of the Football Association's decision to hire a foreign coach.

The German is the third non-English coach to take charge of the Three Lions, with his appointment sparking an intense debate over whether the role should have gone to a homegrown manager.

Tuchel, who will officially start the England job on January 1, jokingly apologised for having a German passport at his unveiling press conference on Wednesday and admitted he is yet to decide whether to sing the national anthem before matches.

The most patriotic sections of England's fanbase have accused the FA of betraying their heritage by hiring the former Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss.

A report this week said Guardiola could sign a contract extension even if City loses their ongoing legal battle against alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial rules.

Pep Guardiola throws weight behind FA’s appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England’s head coach

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed any reports of India-Pakistan cricket talks resuming following foreign minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Islamabad with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 looming.

“Whether any conversation regarding cricket happened or not, I would say nothing of that sort happened. And the reports that you saw were not accurate,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, the latest report by Cricbuzz claims something else. Per the publication, during multiple talks between Jaishankar and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, this issue was raised several times, with Mohsin Naqvi, current PCB chairman and a government minister, reportedly joining this conversation at some point.

Given the Indian government will have the final say in deciding the team’s status of travelling to Pakistan, the BCCI and PCB cannot confirm anything yet.

The PCB has reportedly written to the BCCI, offering assistance should the Men in Blue decide against staying in Pakistan, citing security reasons, and return to India after their scheduled matches – with Chandigarh and New Delhi as options. An unnamed PCB official has confirmed this development, citing nearly a week-long gap between India’s final two games.

Meanwhile, per the proposed schedule shared with all stakeholders, including the eight participating teams, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi are zeroed in as the final venues, with the PCB scheduling all of India's games in Lahore. The city is close to the Indian border, making it easier for the fans to travel across for India’s matches against Bangladesh (February 20), Pakistan (February 23) and March 2 (New Zealand).

Changes to the schedule

As first put out by Cricbuzz, a few developments have emerged regarding the schedule, with local reports claiming that the broadcaster has requested the ICC to relocate one India game, especially the India-New Zealand match. The PCB provided Rawalpindi as an alternative.

However, the ICC officials and the broadcaster have denied any knowledge of such a request.

Besides, the ICC and PCB have chalked out a contingency plan of staging India’s matches outside of Pakistan should the BCCI deny permission to travel.

On the other hand, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) bosses are confident of India, Pakistan and the ICC coming to the same page over this issue.

"There are lots of different alternatives and contingencies available if that doesn't happen. I wouldn't have thought (it would be played without India), because if you play the Champions Trophy without India the broadcast rights aren't there, and we need to protect them," Reuters quoted ECB Chair Richard Thomson as saying.

PAK v ENG: Ben Stokes’ bat ‘goes flying’ as Noman Ali outfoxes England captain in flight – WATCH

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Hasan Murad has replaced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for their first Test against South Africa next week, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Friday. Shakib had earlier said he was almost certain he will not return home for a farewell test following public anger over his silence during deadly protests in the country.

Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, whose 15-year rule as prime minister ended in August with her fleeing to India.

Shakib, 37, apologised for his silence last week and asked fans to be present for his final Test at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

He has not been home since protests erupted in July but the BCB had assured him he will not be harassed on his return for the test in Mirpur, which starts on Monday.

The BCB said 23-year-old Murad, who has taken 136 wickets in 30 first-class matches since his debut in 2021, will replace Shakib in the squad.

"We have been informed that Shakib is unavailable for the first test," the BCB said in a statement. "He is at the end of his Test career but along with his experience, we still do not have someone of that calibre with both bat and the ball to replace him.

"However, Hasan Murad has performed consistently in first class cricket and has been in our system. He will lend balance to our bowling, especially in home conditions. We believe he has the potential to deliver at this level."

Bangladesh chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain had said in a press conference on Wednesday they had not received any further instructions from the BCB or the cricket operations committee.

"It is a paused status at the moment. He is in transit in Dubai," Ashraf Hossain added.

Shakib is considered the greatest cricketer Bangladesh has ever produced but his political past places the former captain in a tricky position as an interim government supervises a power transition.

Shakib announced his intention to retire from tests in September.

He played 71 tests, 247 One-Day Internationals and 129 Twenty20 Internationals, amassing 14,730 runs and claiming 712 wickets to establish himself as one of the leading all-rounders of his era.

Political unrest in Bangladesh forces Shakib al Hasan to miss farewell Test series vs South Africa

New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra continued his love affair with scoring runs in India, this time against India, as he smashed a brilliant 134 off 157 balls in the first innings, helping the Kiwis take a massive 356-run-lead. After India got bundled out on 46 – their lowest team total at home and third-lowest overall in Tests, New Zealand amassed 402 in reply in the first Test in Bengaluru.

Day one didn’t see any play due to consistent rains and a wet outfield, but come day two, the New Zealanders were all over the hosts. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat first on an overcast morning without knowing what was to follow.

Matt Henry (5) and rookie seamer William ORourke (4) picked nine wickets among each other to stun India inside two sessions on day two, while Tim Southee also returned with a wicket.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand’s first innings, the openers began cautiously, with Devon Conway hitting a brilliant 91. The Kiwis ended day two with a 134-run lead with seven wickets remaining and Ravindra at the crease.

The next morning (day three), the Indians picked up four wickets for 53 runs to put New Zealand’s back against the wall. That, however, brought Southee and Ravindra to the spotlight, who dominated the hosts for the next couple of hours. While Rachin stood his ground and continued smashing boundaries on even good deliveries, Southee opened his arms soon after.

The veteran Kiwi bowler completed his fifty, hitting 65 off 73 balls, including four sixes and five fours.

The pair added 137 for the eighth wicket – the second-highest partnership for this wicket against India in India.

Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picked up their wickets to end New Zealand’s innings on 402, with the visitors leading by 356 runs.

India has resumed batting in the second innings.

New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra continued his love affair with scoring runs in India, this time against India, as he smashed a brilliant 134 off 157 balls in the first innings, helping the Kiwis take a massive 356-run-lead.

ALSO READ: Noman Ali and Sajid Khan put up colossal effort to see Pakistan through in second Test vs ENG, level series Meanwhile, in New Zealand’s first innings, the openers began cautiously, with Devon Conway hitting a brilliant 91. Here is how the internet reacted - Very few knocks by visiting batters have disdain for bowlers in India. Especially a full strength spin bowling line up. This Rachin Ravindra knock is right up there amongst the best and the classiest there have been. IND v NZ 2024: Rachin Ravindra smashes 134 in Bengaluru as New Zealand take 356-run-lead in first innings

Spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali picked up all 20 wickets among each other to help Pakistan win the second Test against England in Multan by 152 runs, levelling the three-match series 1-1. After going down horrendously in the first Test despite amassing 556 in the first innings, Pakistan made wholesome changes to their playing XI for the next game, which eventually favoured them.

Sajid and Noman were among the four changes to Pakistan’s XI for the second game at the same venue, with both putting up colossal efforts to revive the side’s chances of beating England in a Test series at home.

Though debutant Kamran Ghulam slammed his maiden Test ton (118) in the first innings, with Saim Ayub and Salman Agha also impressing with the bat, the bowlers won the game for Pakistan.

The off-spinner Sajid picked up seven wickets in the first innings, and the left-arm orthodox Noman Ali returned with his career-best figures of eight for 46 in the second, wrapping England up on 144 in the chase of 297. It is also the second-best bowling figure for a Pakistani bowler against England in an inning in Tests and the third-best match figure.

Besides, this is the eighth instance in Test history when a pair bagged all 20 wickets, the second time for Pakistan after Fazal Mahmood and Khan Mohammad picked up 13 and seven wickets, respectively, against Australia during the Karachi Test in 1956.

Batting let England down

Meanwhile, England failed to replicate their last game performance despite Captain Ben Stokes returning to the playing XI. Although opener Ben Duckett hit a hundred (114) in the first innings, the decorated pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook failed to cross the 50-run-mark across both innings.

Sajid, the player of the match award for his overall performance, said, “We lost the last two series; we just backed our process. Thanks to the Multan crowd for all the support.

“Noman is one of the most experienced players, he shares his experience, and he's played everywhere. First innings, I got out early, and he scored. In the second innings, I batted below him and gave support to Salman,” he said after the game.

However, for Shan Masood, who won his first Test as the Pakistan Test captain, this win was special in several ways.

“The first one is always special; it has come after some hard times. A lot has happened over the last week. You have to applaud the group. You can't doubt the effort. It'll be special for everyone. We were able to pick 20 wickets and post decent totals,” Masood reflected on the second Test win.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi will host the final Test starting next Thursday (Oct 24).

Rohit Sharma owned up to misjudging the Bengaluru pitch following the second day’s play, where the Indian batters surrendered to top-notch bowling from the New Zealand seamers in the first session of the first Test. With day one called off due to rain and the pitch remaining covered for the most part since yesterday, India decided to bat first, only for them to register their lowest Test total at home – 46.

The Kiwi seamers made merry on this Bengaluru surface, with all three of Tim Southee (1), Matt Henry (5) and William O'Rourke (4) picking ten wickets among each other. New Zealand reduced India to 13 for three before the first rain interruption, with Rohit, Virat Kohli (0), and Sarfaraz Khan (0) returning to the pavilion.

Soon after the game resumed, the left-handed pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant tried saving the sinking ship but failed, with Henry and rookie pacer O'Rourke tearing into India’s middle order. KL Rahul and the all-rounder pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin got out without troubling the scoreboard.

It was about time before New Zealand wrapped up India’s first innings on 46 – their third-lowest Test total.

“You see and you try and make the judgment. Sometimes you make the right call, sometimes you don't, and I was on the other side of it this time around,” Rohit Sharma admitted after the second day's play in Bengaluru.

“I'm hurting a little bit because I made that call. But see, for us as a team, I think these are the challenges.

“So, what if we put ourselves under pressure a little bit? We want to play well. We want to challenge ourselves. This time around, it didn't come off, the challenges that were thrown at us. We didn't respond well, and we found ourselves in a situation where we got bowled out for 46 runs. As a captain, it definitely hurts to see that number, but in 365 days you'll make two or three bad calls. That's okay,” he continued.

Rohit wants India to fight back

New Zealand openers were on target in their first innings, adding 67 for the first wicket. Though they lost three wickets before stumps on day two, including their top-scorer Devon Conway on 91, the Kiwis took a lead of 134 runs with seven wickets remaining.

With India on the backfoot as things stand, Rohit admitted India will not let New Zealand get away with the lead or any momentum. He said the hosts would fight back, and with the wicket looking like settling down, they could up the ante and push for a result in their favour.

“I think for us to stay in the game, we want to not let them get away,” he said.

“[They've scored] Way too many runs, clearly they're 180, so that's about 140 runs [134], so [keep them] as less as possible. The wicket seems to be settling down a little bit, so we expect the pitch to play like that. We got to bat really big in the second and try and see if we can make a game out of that,” Rohit continued.

South Korean international footballer Hwang Ui-jo faces four years in jail after pleading guilty in court to illegally filming sexual encounters.

The former Nottingham Forest striker asked the judge to show leniency after being charged with recording himself having sex with women without their consent, a trial transcript seen by AFP said Thursday.

Prosecutors asked the Seoul Central District Court for a four-year jail term for the 32-year-old when they made their closing arguments in the case this week.

Hwang, who now plays for Turkish club Alanyaspor, had initially claimed he was innocent before admitting the offences in the court.

"Though he now acknowledges the wrongdoing, he had denied the allegations leading up to the trial," prosecutors said. "We question whether Hwang is sincere in his reflections... for the irreparable damage inflicted upon the victims."

Hwang said in a prepared statement to the judge: "I offer my sincerest apologies to the victims who have suffered because of my wrongdoings. I sincerely plead for the utmost leniency."

He said he would use the incident as a "mirror of reflection" to live diligently as an athlete.

The scandal came to light when his sister-in-law posted private explicit videos of Hwang in an attempt to blackmail him in June 2023. She is now serving three years in prison for blackmail.

One of the victim's attorneys, Lee Eun-eui, welcomed the prosecutors' demand for a four-year prison sentence.

"It is at least comforting that the prosecution is seeking a four-year imprisonment," she told reporters after the trial, noting her client had been "deeply battered" through the entire affair.

Hwang has been suspended from the national team since November last year when the allegations were made.

He has scored 19 goals in 62 appearances for South Korea.

Hwang is due to be sentenced on December 18.

Several changes

SRH has made several changes to their coaching staff over the years. While Tom Moody was SRH’s head coach in 2021, under whom they signed Steyn, the 2016 IPL winners replaced Moody with Brian Lara in 2023. The former West Indies legend was in charge for just one season before SRH roped in Daniel Vettori as his replacement ahead of the last edition.

Under Vettori, SRH reached the IPL final for the first time since 2018, eventually losing to the winners – Kolkata Knight Riders.

Under Steyn’s guidance, Eastern Cape won SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024.

Meanwhile, in the IPL, the ace seamer played for a few teams, including SRH, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and now-defunct Gujarat Lions and Deccan Chargers.

SRH’s list of retentions

The last season’s runners-up have zeroed in on their retentions, with two overseas players – Heinrich Klassen (INR 23 crore) and Captain Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore) alongside India batter Abhishek Sharma (INR 14 crore) headlining the list.

Per the latest reports, the franchise is willing to add Travis Head and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to this list.

Meanwhile, the mega IPL auction will take place later this year, though the final date and venue are yet to be disclosed.

Dale Steyn steps aside as bowling coach for SunRisers Hyderabad before IPL 2025

The Indian Team registered their lowest Test total at home and third-lowest ever after getting all out on 46 in the first innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand. After the first day got called off due to rain, the proceedings began on day two, with India captain Rohit Sharma winning the toss and electing to bat first. With overcast overhead conditions, the Kiwi bowlers made the most of it, picking early wickets upfront.

Former Test captain Tim Southee drew first blood by removing Rohit bowled on two. Batting at number three this time, Virat got out a nine-ball duck, with rookie seamer William ORourke picking his wicket. Fellow pacer Matt Henry made things worse for India by removing Sarfaraz Khan out on zero, with India’s scorecard reading 13 for three before rain interrupted play again.

Things didn’t change enough for the hosts after the play resumed.

Henry and ORourke tore into India’s middle order to reduce their total to 39 for eight soon after. Of the top eight, five batters got out on zero, including Virat, Sarfaraz, KL Rahul and the two all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Although India got off to a horrible start, they still managed to surpass their lowest Test total—36 against Australia in Adelaide.

Six of India’s lowest team totals in this format have come in Australia and England, and their lowest at home before this came against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old ORourke, who impressed everyone with his tight line and length and nippy incoming deliveries in Sri Lanka, continues doing so, picking four for 22 in 12 overs.

On the other hand, Henry picked five wickets for 15.

The FA's decision to appoint German Thomas Tuchel as head coach of the national team raises serious questions about English coaching, former England defender Gary Neville said.

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel, 51, is the first German to manage England and just the third foreigner to take charge after Sweden's Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.

Newcastle United's Eddie Howe, one of only three English managers in the Premier League, and former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter were among those linked with the job before the FA named Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's successor on Wednesday.

"They probably got the best available coach in the world at this moment in time," former Manchester United captain Neville told Sky Sports News. "Fitting that criteria they are absolutely spot on.

"I am not sure it meets the criteria of St George's Park and the belief in English coaches and the growth in the English teams' performances over the last few years.

"Everybody in our country including myself will wish him all the best and hope we can get over the line and win a trophy, but I think there are some serious questions for the FA to answer in respect of English coaching.

"I do think we are damaging ourselves accepting Tuchel is better than any of the other English coaches."

Tuchel, who will be assisted by English coach Anthony Barry, will begin the role in January ahead of England's qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup.

England reached the final of the European Championship in 2020 and 2024, as well as the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, under Southgate but are still without a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

"I'm not the most patriotic of people, the England manager has to be this or that — it's not about England," former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky. "It's international football. The whole point of it, certainly with the major nations who compete for titles, is it's our best versus their best."

Gary Neville questions FA’s call to appoint Thomas Tuchel as England’s new coach

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is eager to return to football after having his doping ban reduced from four years to 18 months and said he dreams of playing at the 2026 World Cup with France.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport cut the 31-year-old's ban earlier this month after he was provisionally suspended by Italy's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADO Italia) in September 2023 following a positive test for DHEA, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels.

Pogba, who appealed to CAS arguing his ingestion of DHEA was not intentional, will be eligible to return to play for Juventus in March - and he said he was stronger, wiser and even willing to take a pay cut.

"I am ready to return to normal in 2025. I only have one desire, to play football. The reality is that I am a Juve player and I am preparing to play for Juve," Pogba told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday.

"I don't have to speak, the pitch will speak and then (coach) Thiago Motta will judge with his own eyes, based on what he sees. I'm ready to give up even money to play for Juve again. I want to come back," the player, who has a contract with Juventus until June 2026, added.

Pogba, who last played for Juventus over a year ago in a 2-0 win at Empoli, said that getting the initial ban was the most difficult moment of his career.

"It was a very difficult year and what hurt the most was spending every day outside the stadium and (Juventus's training centre) Continassa taking my children to school without being able to go inside to train or play for Juventus.

"Many past and current teammates have always supported me. (Juan) Cuadrado called me every other day and always made me laugh. (Paulo) Dybala sent me many messages. And then (Dusan) Vlahovic, (Weston) McKennie, (Timothy) Weah, (Moise) Kean... I didn't expect so many."

Pogba added that as well as getting back to his best for the Serie A side, he also wants to return to Didier Deschamps' France squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

"The dream of the World Cup is there, but Deschamps hasn't opened the doors for anyone. It's up to me to open them he told me to work," the midfielder said.

Returning Paul Pogba eyes spot in 2026 World Cup squad after doping ban reduction

Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya obliterated the women's world record by almost two minutes Sunday as she won the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:56, taking inspiration from the late Kelvin Kiptum.

The 30-year-old Chepngetich, who became the first three-time women's winner of the Chicago race, broke the previous world record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa last year in Berlin.

"I feel so great, I'm proud of myself. This is my dream that has come true," said Chepngetich, the 2019 world marathon champion. "I've fought a lot, thinking about the world record and I have fulfilled it."

Chepngetich, who also won in Chicago in 2021 and 2022, dedicated her latest victory to Kiptum, who set the men's world record at last year's race just four months before he died in a car accident at the age of 24.

"The world record has come back to Kenya, and I dedicate this world record to Kelvin Kiptum," said Chepngetich.

Runners observed a moment's silence on the start line in honour of Kiptum. Organisers also handed out stickers displaying Kiptum's record-breaking time of 2:00:35 for the 50,000 participants to put on their race bibs.

In the absence of Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, the 2023 Chicago winner, Chepngetich set a blazing early pace and reached the halfway point in 1:04:16, the fifth-quickest time in history for a half marathon by a woman.

"The weather was perfect and I was well prepared. The world record was in my mind," said Chepngetich, runner-up to Hassan 12 months ago.

Ethiopian Sutume Kebede, a former training partner of Kiptum's, battled valiantly to stay within sight of Chepngetich but gradually lost ground on the leader.

At one point, Chepngetich was on track to shave more than three minutes off the world record. She slowed slightly in the closing kilometres but still had plenty in the tank and beat her own personal best by four-plus minutes, which she had clocked when winning the race two years ago.

Kebede came second on Sunday in 2:17:32, with Kenyan Irine Cheptai third in 2:17:52.

Joyciline Jepkosgei, a former winner in London and New York, struggled to keep up early on and trailed home a distant fifth (2:20:51).

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich shatters women’s world record to win Chicago Marathon

Spain forward Lamine Yamal will miss Tuesday’s Nations League Group A4 match against Serbia to avoid any risk of injury after suffering a muscle strain, the Spain national team said on Sunday.

The 17-year-old was substituted in the 93rd minute during Spain's 1-0 win over Denmark in a Nations League Group A4 match on Saturday. Yamal endured several tackles from the Danish side and was spotted limping back to the team bus after the match.

After undergoing an MRI scan in Madrid on Sunday, the Barcelona player was withdrawn from the Spain training camp and will return to his club.

"The tests did not reveal any structural injury, and the medical staff of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed it is a case of muscle strain," the Spain national team said in a statement on Sunday. "Prioritising the player's health and to avoid any risk of injury ahead of the upcoming match against Serbia, it has been decided to withdraw him from the squad."

Spain coach Luis De la Fuente said in a news conference after the Denmark game, "The referee has to protect these talented players, but Lamine has to get used to it. I would love it to be a bed of roses, Flower Power, but this sport is like that.

"Lamine displayed an exceptional attitude and generated a lot for us from the right flank. He has a special talent. I had a teammate who used to say: 'What do you want, kisses (from the opponents)?' Teams will use the weapons they can within the rules."

Yamal was a key player in Spain's 2024 European Championship win. He has scored five goals and registered five assists from 11 games for Barcelona across all competitions this season.

Atletico Madrid's Rodrigo Riquelme has been called up to replace Yamal for Tuesday's match against Serbia in Cordoba.

Spain lead the group at the halfway mark with seven points from their three games, followed by the Denmark on six and Serbia on four, with Switzerland bottom with no points.

Nations League: Spain’s Lamine Yamal to miss Serbia tie with muscle strain

Lee Carsley admitted England deserve a "world class coach" with a winning habit after Sunday's 3-1 victory against Finland left the interim manager's future unresolved.

Coming just days after England's shock 2-1 defeat against Greece at Wembley, Carsley could not afford another setback in the Nations League trip to Helsinki.

Carsley had been heavily criticised for playing five attacking midfielders and no recognised striker against Greece and he selected a more conventional line-up this time.

England were still far from impressive for long periods, but they mustered enough quality to grind out a third win in four games since Carsley replaced Gareth Southgate.

Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the first half and Trent Alexander-Arnold's superb free-kick doubled the lead after the interval before Declan Rice's tap-in wrapped up the points.

It was another day of mixed messages both on and off the pitch for England as the Football Association (FA) take their time hiring a permanent successor to Southgate, who quit after the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

Carsley had woken to reports on Sunday that the FA are in talks with former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

And the former Everton midfielder, who had been working as England Under-21 coach before stepping up, appeared to distance himself from the job during a post-match television interview.

"My remit was six games and I'm happy with that. This is a privileged position," Carsley said. "People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I'm in the middle. My bosses have made it clear what they need from me.

"This job deserves a world class coach who has won trophies and I am still on the path to that."

It was the second time in a week that Carsley had been curiously coy about declaring his interest in the job.

But he backtracked a little in a separate media briefing when pressed on whether he was ruling himself out of the permanent position.
