Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood reflects on his side's embarrassing performance in the first Test in Multan, which they lost by an inning and 47 runs. Pakistan scored 556 in the first innings yet lost the game with one inning left, becoming the first team in Test history to attain this unwanted record.&nbsp;

"We've spoken about the third innings, but it's a team game, when you put 550 on the board, it's important to back it up with ten wickets, and that's what we didn't do. That's the key, how can the batting and bowling in the first innings contribute to a lead. The onus is to set the game up well and finish it off," Masood said after England wrapped up Pakistan on 220 in their second innings.

While Pakistan began brilliantly by removing England captain Ollie Pope on a second-ball duck in the second innings, what followed later took them by storm.&nbsp;

England's most decorated pair in this XI - Joe Root and Harry Brook, went bonkers, smashing 262 and 317, respectively. Their 454-run stand for the fourth wicket is the highest for England for any wicket for any pair.&nbsp;

After whacking Pakistan for nearly days, registering a whopping 823/7 declared - the fourth-highest team total ever, England wrapped up Pakistan's six wickets quickly before stumps on day four.&nbsp;

Though Salman Agha and Aamer Jamal delayed the inevitable with a century-plus run partnership, England picked the remaining four wickets early on day five to beat Pakistan in the first Test.&nbsp;

"We should learn from England, they found ways to take 20 wickets. That's the challenge the side has going forward. We're in the middle of the series, we've talked about a squad mentality. Test cricket is the ultimate format, the best teams find a way. Scoring runs and taking wickets are the non-negotiables," he continued.

<h2>'We're hurt'</h2>

With Pakistan losing their sixth consecutive Test under Shan Masood and seventh overall at home since 2022, the fans are hurt evidently, with the Test captain admitting that they will do everything possible to ensure a quick turnaround.

"We love playing the game, we're hurt by the results, we're hurt as a nation, but need a quick turnaround. We're not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We have to get this right as a squad."

'We're hurt as a nation' - Pakistan captain Shan Masood after Multan Test shocker against England

Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma could stay with the franchise for the next three years, but chances of that happening are bleak. With the mega IPL Auction just around the corner and all ten teams preparing hard to finalise their list of retentions, the deadline being October 31, all eyes will be on MI's decision surrounding Rohit.

Rohit's former India and IPL teammate, Harbhajan Singh, opines that if Mumbai decides against retaining their ex-captain, under whom they won five IPL titles, Rohit's name on the auction table will lead to a massive bidding war.&nbsp;

“It will be interesting to see whether he will be retained or not. If he goes into the auction pool, it will be fascinating to see which team bids for him. I’m sure many teams must be thinking along those lines,” Harbhajan said in a chat with Times of India (TOI).

Praising the current ODI and Test captain, Harbhajan said even at 37, Rohit has plenty of cricket left in him and that he is a proven match-winner besides being a standout captain.&nbsp;

With several franchises seeking a top-notch leader to build their team around, Rohit's name on the auction table could cause bidding chaos.&nbsp;

“Rohit Sharma, as a leader and a player, is amazing. He’s a top-quality player, top-quality captain and leader. He is a proven match-winner. Even at 37, he still has a lot of cricket left in him. If Rohit enters the auction, he will fetch big bucks. It will be exciting to see the auction unfold,” he added.

<h2>If not Rohit, then who?</h2>

Although earlier reports suggested that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are chasing Rohit to replace him with Faf du Plessis as the side's new captain, several other teams are keeping a close eye on his development.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Mumbai Indians replaced Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the new captain, sending shockwaves. Though MI fans took longer to accept this change, head coach Mark Boucher called it the need of the hour.&nbsp;

Following Hardik's appointment as MI's new captain, the franchise failed to get going in the past season, ending it with eight points from 14 matches, sitting in the tenth position.

However, with the new season approaching, Mumbai Indians could retain their captain, Hardik, and the ace pair of Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, with young guns like Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma also in contention.&nbsp;

PGA Tour stars Rory McIlroy and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler will face LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in an exhibition event in Las Vegas in December organizers announced Wednesday. The 18-hole, made-for television event between four of the biggest names from the upstart Saudi-backed LIV series and the PGA Tour will be staged at Shadow Creek.

Scheffler, who won the Masters and Olympics among his eight titles this year, and McIlroy, a four-time major winner, will partner against two-time US Open champion DeChambeau, who edged McIlroy for this year's US Open crown, and five-time major winner Koepka -- the only players to win majors while active LIV members.

The PGA Tour and LIV's backers, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), are in merger talks but have been unable to complete a deal to reunite golf's elite players.

The LIV-PGA billed as 'The Showdown', McIlroy said last month at the Irish Open, is less about trying to push those long-stalled negotiations and more about bringing some joy to golf fans annoyed by the three-season split.

"I wouldn't say it's meant to send a message. It's more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about," said McIlroy.

"You've got the best player in the world. You've got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years. You've got me in there who -- I haven't done what those guys have done the last couple years but I've definitely been I feel one of the best players in the world.

"It's a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward."

With LIV players banned from PGA Tour events since the upstart series swiped big-name players from the PGA in 2022, major championships have been the only place where LIV and PGA stars compete against one another.

"It's in the middle of December. There's not a lot going on in the game of golf. So trying to get people excited about something before the season starts again," McIlroy said.

"We all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future."

In June at Pinehurst, McIlroy had a chance to win his first major since 2014 but lost to DeChambeau by one stroke on the final hole at Pinehurst.

Golf: Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau set for PGA-LIV 'showdown' in Vegas

England's rising batting star Harry Brook said he was delighted that he has&nbsp;finally eclipsed his father's highest club score, when he hit a triple hundred against Pakistan in Multan on Thursday. The 25-year-old smashed a career best 317 that, coupled with Joe Root's 262, helped visitors pile 823-7 declared -- the fourth highest total in Test cricket -- England's third best.

With a big 267-run lead over Pakistan in the first innings, England caught the home team napping at 152-6. At close, Pakistan still needed 115 to avoid an innings defeat on the final day.

Brook said his father's highest score was the target.&nbsp;

Brook had missed a chance of surpassing dad's best when he scored 186 against New Zealand at Wellington last year.

"I am lost for words, to be honest, I'm just happy that the team's in a...&nbsp;in a strong position to win the game tomorrow morning. It's an incredible thing."

Brook and Root enjoyed a run feast on a flat Multan stadium pitch, adding 454 runs for the fourth wicket, England's highest partnership in Tests. It eclipsed the 411-run fourth-wicket partnership by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against the West Indies at Birmingham in 1957.

"It was wonderful batting with Rooty," said Brook. "We spoke about the game moving forward and going out there after lunch to try and put the foot down and get a decent lead."

"It makes you feel so comfortable when you're watching him at the other end, he makes the game look so easy, and he's playing the ball so late and making the balls look slow."

Brook completed his triple century with a boundary off part-timer Saim Ayub, reaching the mark off 310 balls before he top-edged a sweep off the same bowler and was caught by Shan Masood.

Brook cracked 29 fours and three sixes in his 439-minute stay at the crease.

It was Brook's sixth Test century and his fourth against Pakistan, following his three in as many Tests when England routed Pakistan 3-0 in 2022.

Golf: Chiara Tamburlini headlines superstar roster participating in Women’s Indian Open 2024

Ace Indian T20 batter Rinku Singh has emerged as a force to reckon with in recent times, and following his latest outing against Bangladesh in the 2nd T20I in Delhi, he cleared any doubts anyone had about his game. Although he seems to tick every box as a finisher in the shortest format, the left-hander reflects on the advice his team's coach&nbsp;Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav&nbsp;gave him that helped him get better at his game.&nbsp;

After Bangladesh reduced India to 41 for three inside the first six overs, the new pairing of Rinku and Player of the Match Nitish Reddy&nbsp;for his magnificent 74 off 34 balls, added 104 runs for the fourth wicket, with Rinku completing a stunning 29-ball 53.

Though Nitish's exploits might have made headlines, Rinku's stable outing gave the batters (to come) the extra cushion to play their natural game. Reflecting on his match-winning knock in Delhi, Rinku revealed how Gambhir and Suryakumar's advice comforted him to play his natural game throughout.&nbsp;

“Coach and captain have asked us to play our game, whatever the situation is," Rinku told reporters after the second T20I, which India won by 86 runs. “I have been told to back myself and hit the ball. Gautam bhai has given us the freedom.”

Even though the BCCI overlooked Rinku in the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Americas, which India won, the selectors have backed him to continue delivering in his role (as a finisher) in the shortest format.

Explaining his batting mantra, Rinku said,&nbsp;“My batting order is such that there is no fixed time when I will come to bat. When the wicket falls early, then my plan is to keep the scoreboard ticking with ones and twos and wait for the poor balls to cash in. If only two and three overs are left, I try to score as many runs as possible and hit fours and sixes.”&nbsp;

<h2>'I see myself as a three-format player'&nbsp;</h2>

Rinku, who will return to playing Ranji Trophy right after India's final game on Saturday (October 12), says he will grind extra in the nets to adapt to the red-ball cricket, adding he considers himself an all-format player.

“I will not get enough chance to prepare for the Ranji Trophy match. October 12 is our last match. I will get a couple of days. It is very tough to play red ball after playing the white ball. When I will go to Lucknow, I will bat more in the nets,” he said. “I see myself as a three-format player."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India has already won the T20I series against Bangladesh, with Hyderabad hosting the dead rubber on Saturday.&nbsp;

Ace Indian T20 batter Rinku Singh has emerged as a force to reckon with in recent times, and following his latest outing against Bangladesh in the 2nd T20I in Delhi, he cleared any doubts anyone had about his game. Although he seems to tick every box as a finisher in the shortest format, the left-hander reflects on the advice his team's coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav gave him that helped him get better at his game. After Bangladesh reduced India to 41 for three inside the first six overs, the new pairing of Rinku and Player of the Match Nitish Reddy for his magnificent 74 off 34 balls, added 104 runs for the fourth wicket, with Rinku completing a stunning 29-ball 53. Though Nitish's exploits might have made headlines, Rinku's stable outing gave the batters (to come) the extra cushion to play their natural game. Reflecting on his match-winning knock in Delhi, Rinku revealed how Gambhir and Suryakumar's advice comforted him to play his natural game throughout. “Coach and captain have asked us to play our game, whatever the situation is," Rinku told reporters after the second T20I, which India won by 86 runs. “I have been told to back myself and hit the ball. Former England manager Gareth Southgate said on Thursday he would not return to coaching for at least the next year and was unlikely to take over a different national team.

The 54-year-old stepped down in July after England's second straight European Championship final defeat, ending an eight-year spell with the Three Lions.

"Sometimes when you are in a big role you don't realise the weight until it's gone," he told the European Club Association's general assembly. "It is one of those jobs where everybody has an opinion.

"I am enjoying my life so there is no rush. For 11 years I committed fully to the national federation. I won't coach in the next year for sure. I am certain of that. When you come out of a big role you need to give your body time, your mind time."

Southgate led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the quarters in 2022, and the finals of the last two European Championships for their best international results in decades.

England are still searching for Southgate's replacement with interim manager Lee Carsley currently in charge. Southgate himself said he was unlikely to take over a different national team and would consider coaching a club only under the right conditions.

The former England coach had been linked with a move to Old Trafford as a potential successor to embattled Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, as well as with a technical observer role at UEFA, the governing body of European football.

"(A return to) club football? Depending on what role that is," he said. "I have been fortunate to have worked with fantastic players. You got to have excitement, passion to go to work every day," he added. "It is unlikely to be another national federation. England was from the heart."

Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed is being treated in a hospital in Multan after he complained of illness during the ongoing first Test against England. After bowling 31 overs on day three, Abrar complained of high fever and body soreness on the morning of the fourth day, taking no further part in the game.&nbsp;

Per the PCB, Abrar has undergone several tests, and everyone awaits updates once the results are received.

Much like every Pakistani bowler, Abrar was taken for cleaners on two days that he bowled. He endured a difficult time against Joe Root and Harry Brook, who scored 262 and 371, respectively, adding 454 for the fourth wicket - the highest partnership by any pair for any wicket against Pakistan in Tests.

With the Multan wicket offering nothing for the bowlers, especially for spinners, Abrar deployed a negative line and length on day three, bowling around the wicket to the batting pair. That strategy, however, didn't pay dividends as England hammered Pakistani bowlers, with six bowlers conceding more than 100 runs in the innings.

Abrar returned with figures of 174/0 in 35 overs.&nbsp;

<h2>Injury haunts Abrar</h2>

Having made his professional debut as an 18-year-old for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL, the right-arm spinner spent several years on the sidelines with a persistent back injury. Ahead of the Australia Tests late last year, Abrar sustained a nerve injury, ultimately missing the three Tests.&nbsp;

Abrar also missed the first Test against Bangladesh in August this year.&nbsp;

Although Pakistan named Noman Ali and Zahid Mahmood in the side for the first Test, they released the pair ahead of the start of the game.

England sits in a commanding position&nbsp;

After Pakistan scored 556 in the first inning, England scored 267 more runs in reply, scoring 823/7 declared, their second-highest team total ever and fourth overall.&nbsp;

While Harry Brook slammed his maiden triple ton, Root completed his highest individual score in Tests (262).&nbsp;

In the second innings, England reduced Pakistan to 152 for six in 27 overs, with the hosts trailing behind by 115 runs, with one day remaining.&nbsp;

Australia has dealt a massive blow in their quest to win back the Border-Gavaskar series as their star all-rounder Cameron Green could miss the entire summer with a back injury. Per the latest reports, Cricket Australia's medical staff has assessed Green's injury, with back surgery emerging as a potential option. In that case, Green will miss the five-Test match series against India starting November 22.

Cricket Australia already has plenty riding on their shoulders, including finding David Warner's replacement at the top. Though Travis Head emerged as the latest option to open alongside Usman Khawaja despite Steve Smith holding onto that spot, Green was one of the names discussed earlier. With Green potentially out of the India Tests, CA must dig in quickly into their domestic setup seeking answers.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Green flew home from the UK in September after complaining of back soreness following the third ODI against England. He underwent scans in England and Australia (upon landing), with CA's medical team taking their time before going public with a final announcement.&nbsp;

Although Green, 25, has had four stress fractures before but none since 2019, CA managed his workload remarkably in the first four years of his international career.&nbsp;

With Green having two options and time seems to run out for him and the hosts, all parties involved will come up with a final decision sooner. In the case of Green undergoing back surgery, he will miss the entire home summer, including the white-ball series against Pakistan; however, if he decides against going for it, Green could play, but only as a batter.

<h2>Australia to reshuffle batting order</h2>

If Green is ruled out of the India series, Australia will have to reshuffle the batting order, bringing Smith back to his original position of number four. In that case, Australia's middle order would have Marnus (at 3) and Smith to follow, with Head and Mitchell Marsh playing at number five and six, respectively. Keeper-batter Alex Carey will play at number seven.

That, however, will continue to leave the door open for an opener's slot, with domestic giants Marcus Harris, Matt Renshaw and Cameron Bancroft leading the race.&nbsp;

The Indian women's team won its second match in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2024 against Sri Lanka on Wednesday (Oct 9), strengthening their chances of qualifying for the semis. Despite starting the tournament with a heavy 58-run loss at the hands of New Zealand, India remained in the race for the top-four finish with two straight wins. So, after improving their NRR with their biggest win (by runs) in this tournament the other night, how can they qualify for the semis?

While India's six-wicket win over Pakistan wasn't enough for them to rise on the NRR ladder because they took longer to complete the chase, their massive victory over the Asian Champions in Dubai saved their stance on the points table. With India is yet to face the defending champions Australia in their final Group Stage game on Sunday (Oct 13), the semis race remains open and exciting.&nbsp;

India batted first, with openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma adding 98 for the first wicket. After the fall of their wickets, Captain Harmanpreet Kaur took the onus upon herself and began with an onslaught, smashing a quickfire fifty. She remained unbeaten on 52 off 27 balls, hitting eight fours and a six, as India scored 172 for three in 20 overs.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Sri Lanka never got going in the run chase, as they kept losing wickets regularly. After India reduced them to 6 for three inside the Powerplay, including picking their captain and star batter Chamari Athapaththu on just one, Kavisha Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani added 37 for the fourth wicket, their best for the day.

However, it was about time before Asha Sobhana and Arundhati Reddy tore into their batting order to wrap up Sri Lanka's innings on 90.

<h2>Indian women's team's chances of qualifying for semis</h2>

India improved their NRR from -1.271 to +0.576, and they will look forward to maintaining their winning run against Australia.&nbsp;

In the case where India beats Australia, both these teams, including New Zealand (three wins in four games, given they beat both Sri Lanka and Pakistan), will be locked on six points each, with teams having better NRR qualifying for the final four.&nbsp;

Considering another situation where Australia beats India, Australia with eight points (four wins in four matches) and New Zealand with six points will qualify for the semis, with India getting knocked out of the tournament.&nbsp;

That, however, still wouldn't close all doors for India to qualify for the last four-finish (with just four points), given one situation where Pakistan and Sri Lanka beat New Zealand and Australia.

Women's T20 World Cup 2024 - How can India qualify for semis after Sri Lanka win?

Europe Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald revealed on Tuesday he has been in talks with LIV golf defector Sergio Garcia about making a possible return to the team for next year's clash with the USA.

Speaking at an event in New York to mark the countdown to next year's Europe-USA Ryder Cup showdown at Bethpage, Donald confirmed he had spoken to Garcia about his availibility.

Garcia, the all-time leading Ryder Cup scorer with 28.5 points in 10 appearances, missed last year's tournament in Rome after opting to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit.

However Donald said on Tuesday that Garcia was now considering applying to rejoin the DP World Tour in a push to be eligible for selection.

"Obviously he resigned his membership a couple years ago," Donald said of Garcia.

"But we have had some chats. He's considering rejoining. He'd have to follow all the rules and regulations like everyone else, and if he does that, again, he will be eligible to partake in the Ryder Cup.&nbsp;

"We chatted on phone a couple weeks ago. He's certainly very interested in doing that. He understands everything that's involved, and again, the decision has to go to him, whether he's prepared to do all that.

"But we have had some chats. He's considering rejoining. He'd have to follow all the rules and regulations like everyone else, and if he does that, again, he will be eligible to partake in the Ryder Cup. "We chatted on phone a couple weeks ago. He's certainly very interested in doing that. He understands everything that's involved, and again, the decision has to go to him, whether he's prepared to do all that. "But certainly, we've had that discussion, yes." Donald said existing regulations meant other LIV players could also be available as captain's picks. Ryder Cup: Captain Luke Donald in talks with Sergio Garcia over possible return to Team Europe

French rugby federation president Florian Grill announced Monday an overhaul of the system of discipline in the France teams after a summer tour of Argentina overshadowed by claims of attempted rape and racism.&nbsp;

"The historical pattern that existed for years, based on empowerment, accountability does not work," Grill told AFP in an interview, revealing that "a plan, in which there will be controls and sanctions" will be unveiled in the coming days.&nbsp;

"The framework was not clear and a form of flexible structure was even admitted," he explained of the approach until now.&nbsp;

"We are setting a clear framework which will then allow sanctions to be imposed. And we will not have a hand that trembles."

In July, France players Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, both aged 21, were charged with aggravated rape after winning their first international caps against Argentina.

The pair were arrested after a 39-year-old woman alleged they viciously assaulted her in a hotel room hours after winning against the Pumas in Mendoza.

On the same night in July, full-back Melvyn Jaminet made racist remarks on social media. He was sent home from the three-match tour and received a 34-week suspension by the FFR.

On Friday, the prosecutor's office in Mendoza recommended that the charges of aggravated rape against Auradou and Jegou be dismissed at a hearing set for October 18.

Grill said he "completely respects" the Argentine justice system and would not comment on the Jegou-Auradou affair.

But the FFR boss said that he wanted to put an end to "the fourth and fifth half" post match celebrations which had preceded these cases.&nbsp;

"There will be financial or sporting sanctions" in the future, he continued regretting in previous years "a form of acceptance of these excesses which could sometimes even be organised".&nbsp;

"We can't imagine that we're doing ultra-elaborate nutrition, personalised hydration for each player, data you don't want to know, and that at the same time, we can, in the middle of a tour, do a fourth or fifth half," he explained.&nbsp;

The details of this plan, which notably includes an overhaul of the international players' charter, should be announced in the coming days.&nbsp;

"We cannot take all the positives from rugby, ask brands and partners to associate their image with our presupposed values and not respect them," he added.

"Today's win is crucial. Finally, the work we've put in over the past few weeks is starting to pay off. Beating Milan can set the stage for a different season," De Gea told DAZN. "It was an incredible night. I want to focus not on the penalties, but on the work the team is doing to give the fans a night like this."

The drama began after 22 minutes when Fiore striker Kean's frustrating night took shape as Frenchman Maignan saved his penalty, which was awarded after Hernandez fouled Dodo.

Minutes later, Kean did find the back of the net but his effort was disallowed as he was clearly offside.

Adli eventually broke the deadlock 10 minutes before halftime with a low shot from the edge of the box that went in off the post but the on-loan Milan midfielder did not celebrate the goal out of respect for his parent club.

<h2>Double Save</h2>

Milan earned a penalty themselves just before the break when Tijjani Reijnders was tripped by defender Luca Ranieri, but Hernandez's attempt was saved by Spaniard De Gea, who made a stunning one-handed stop in the bottom corner.

Kean’s difficult night continued after the break when he had another effort ruled offside before De Gea kept out Abraham’s penalty nine minutes into the second half with a brilliant diving save after Kean fouled Matteo Gabbia.

It was the first time two penalties had been saved by one goalkeeper in a Serie A match since May 2016.

Milan finally scored on the hour mark when Christian Pulisic equalised with a perfect volley from a cross before Gudmundsson's 73rd-minute strike put Fiorentina back in front.

Emotions ran high in the final moments as Fiorentina coach Raffaele Palladino was sent off for protesting, while Kean was again denied when his superb shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced out in the dying minutes.

Milan's France striker Hernandez was celebrating his 27th birthday but received an unwelcome card when he was sent off at the end of the match for arguing with the referee.

The duo appeared together at the start of the second quarter in the Lakers' pre-season game against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert, east of Los Angeles.

Anticipation about when the James duo would make their first appearance together has built since the Lakers picked Bronny with the 55th pick in the NBA Draft in June.

New Lakers coach J.J. Redick, who said last month that the two would play together "sooner rather than later," said in pre-game remarks on Sunday that the prospect of the James' lining up alongside one another was "surreal."

"I'm excited about it," Redick said. "I am very honored that I get to be a part of history. It's going to happen in the flow of the game."

In the event, Redick introduced Bronny James to the floor with the Lakers leading 34-25.

LeBron James has said that the prospect of playing with Bronny on the same team had given him a new lease on life as he enters the 22nd season of a glittering career.

"It's a lot of excitement, a pure joy, to be able to come to work every day, put in hard work with your son every day and be able to see him continue to grow," James said. "We push each other. He pushes me. I push him. We push our teammates, and vice versa. So it's just a very joyous moment not only for myself, but for our family. So it's pretty awesome. Gives you a lot of life."

Bronny meanwhile said on Monday he was fueled by the words of critics who have suggested he owes his place on the Lakers roster entirely to his superstar father.

"I'm just taking all that stuff, that criticism and backlash that people have given me and turning it into something that can fuel me," Bronny James said.

Lakers coach Redick has insisted that Bronny James was drafted by the franchise on merit, pushing back at suggestions that the former University of Southern California player had been "given" a roster spot.

"Bronny has earned this through hard work," Redick said earlier this year. "He's going to have a great opportunity to become an excellent NBA player."&nbsp;

Bronny James is expected to spend most of his rookie season in the developmental G-League rather than the Lakers senior squad.

The Lakers open their 2024-2025 regular season campaign with a home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22.

India gymnast Dipa Karmakar has retired from the sport at the age of 31. She announced the decision on Monday (Oct 7) in a heartfelt letter shared on social media.

"After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from competitive gymnastics. This is not an easy decision, but it feels like the right time," read Karmakar's statement. "Gymnastics has been at the centre of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am grateful for every moment—the highs, the lows, and everything in between."

Karmakar has been an iconic figure in gymnastic in India, as she became the first gymnast to represent India in Olympics since 1964 by qualifying for 2016 Rio games. She is also the first Indian female to represent India in gymnastic in Olympics. She performed brilliantly in Rio games and missed the bronze medal by a whisker.

The athlete hit a setback in October 2021 when she was banned for 21 months for doping. She made a return in Asian Championships earlier this year and won a gold medal as well. Karmakar, however, revealed that she could not push her body anymore.

“My last victory at the Asian Championships was a turning point,” said Karmakar. “Because until then I felt I could push my body, but there are times when the body tells you it is time to rest."

“Even though I am retiring, my connection with gymastics will remain. I want to give back to the sport – be it as a mentor, coach, or by supporting young girls.

&nbsp;"Today I feel proud of all that I have achieved. Representing India at the world stage and winning medals and, most of all, performing the Produnova vault at the Rio Olympics has been the most special moment of my career," she added.

Batting legend Sanath Jayasuriya is appointed Sri Lanka’s new full-time head coach until the 2026 T20 World Cup, the tournament to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya was SL’s interim coach, and following his successful run in this capacity with the national team, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) named him the permanent coach.

Sri Lanka tasted enormous success in the longer format under Jayasuriya. While they beat India in a bilateral ODI series for the first time in 27 years, they won a Test in England for the first in over a decade. Besides, they whitewashed New Zealand in Tests (2-0) at home, giving themselves an outside chance of making the World Test Championship (WTC) Final next year.

"The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team's good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the 'interim head coach'," the board statement said.

Even though Jayasuriya never worked in a similar capacity with any team before, he served as Sri Lankan Cricket’s chief selector on two different occasions.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, his first assignment as the head coach will be the upcoming limited-over series against West Indies in Dambulla and Pallekele.

As things stand, Sri Lanka is placed third on the current WTC standings, with India and Australia occupying the first two slots, respectively. With five wins and four losses in nine contested matches in this latest WTC cycle, Sri Lanka has a PCT of 55.56.&nbsp;

Following the home series against the West Indies, Sri Lanka will travel to South Africa for two Tests starting November 27.&nbsp;

They would then fly to New Zealand for three ODIs and as many T20Is beginning December 28.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka appoint Sanath Jayasuriya as full-time head coach following successful interim stint

England Test team coach Brendon McCullum has defended James Anderson's decision to skip the start of Pakistan to play golf. England’s bowling coach Anderson is participating in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a pro-am golf tournament in Scotland. He missed the preparatory camp ahead of the Multan Test, with reports suggesting that he will join England’s backroom staff on October 8 (the second day of the first Test).

However, despite not being present with the new set of bowlers, Anderson was in constant touch with the players via social media, teaching them over mobile phone, a concept that former England captain and opener Michael Atherton calls ‘coaching by WhatsApp’.

Ahead of the first day’s play in Multan, where England lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, McCullum defended Anderson, saying that we live in a world where you can communicate without being present in person.

“Two months ago, you guys were saying he didn’t deserve to be the coach. Now we are missing him. That’s an affirmation of how good an impact Jimmy Anderson has made in the short period of time [during] his transition from player to coach,” McCullum said to Atherton during a chat on Sky Sports.

Since stepping aside from Test cricket earlier this year, Anderson took over as the bowling consultant role with the England Test team, with McCullum reminding everyone of his transition, adding he’s not in a full-time role.

“It’s a combined decision amongst everyone,” McCullum asserted.&nbsp;

“He [Anderson] has made a huge transition from a 20-odd-year career into his new role, and he is on as a bowling consultant as well, it is not a full-time role,” the head coach continued.

<h2>No one would have a problem with enjoying</h2>

McCullum understands the constraints of a tight international calendar, insisting everyone must find ways to relax and have fun.&nbsp;

In Anderson’s case, McCullum emphasised what he did for England and how he wishes to adapt to his new role, if Anderson wants some time off, so be it, adding he doesn’t think anyone would have problems with that.&nbsp;

“The challenges and demands of the international cricket calendar mean you need to get out and enjoy yourself as well. If he were at home with his family, I question whether anyone would have problems with it," he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan got off to a flyer against England in Multan, with the opener Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood completing respective tons inside two sessions.&nbsp;

IPL franchise Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta finally won a trophy, but elsewhere. Two months after sprinter Julien Alfred won St Lucia’s maiden gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris 2024, former two-time T20 World Cup winner Darren Sammy coached the Kings franchise to their maiden title. That, however, also ended Preity Zinta’s wait for a cricket trophy.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, St Lucia won the toss and elected to bowl first. After getting rid of dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz on a duck, the bowlers three quick wickets in Shai Hope, Moeen Ali and Shimron Hetmyer to dent GAW's run-rate, with Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmed picking two.

The wickets kept tumbling as the inning progressed, putting pressure on the defending champions; however, the two all-rounders Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius saved the day with late cameos, as Guyana scored 138 for eight in 20 overs.&nbsp;

St Lucia lost early wickets inside the Powerplay, including their captain, Faf du Plessis, on run-a-ball 21.&nbsp;

With their scorecard reeling at 51 for four at one stage, St Lucia needed a gigantic effort from its batter to win from that position.&nbsp;

Come in USA’s Aaron Jones and WI's Roston Chase, and the pair pulled the team out of trouble. Instead of deploying a defensive approach, the two batters began with the onslaught, with Jones taking the lead.&nbsp;

An 88-run stand for the fifth wicket saw Jones hitting an unbeaten 48 off 31 balls, including four sixes and two fours, while the experienced Chase played second-fiddle, scoring 39 not out off 22 balls, smashing two sixes and as many fours.

St Lucia won the match in the 19th over, with jubilation beginning in the dressing room.

That's why I don't want to think too much or express too much." Meanwhile, during the first T20I, Varun picked Towhid Hridoy on 12 before removing Jaker Ali and Rishad Hossain later in the innings. IND v BAN 1st T20I: Varun Chakravarthy on India return after three years - 'It feels like rebirth'

World number six Coco Gauff dominated unseeded Czech Karolina Muchova to win the China Open final 6-1 6-3 on Sunday and become the first player to win each of their first seven WTA hardcourt finals in the Open Era.

Gauff fired off 24 winners in a strong performance to add the Beijing trophy to her win in the Auckland Classic this year and win the second WTA 1000 title of her career after her 2023 victory in Cincinnati, where she also beat Muchova in the final.

Gauff, who improved her head-to-head record against Muchova to 3-0, has won eight of her nine WTA finals.

"I want to say congratulations to you, Karolina, it's great to see you back on tour," Gauff said of her opponent Muchova, who spent an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a wrist injury at the 2023 U.S. Open.

"I think you're such an amazing player, and you deserve everything, and hopefully you play many more finals."

The tournament was Gauff's first after adding Matt Daly to her coaching team, following her split with Brad Gilbert last month.

"I would like to thank my team. It's our first tournament together as a full, complete team," Gauff said. "Thank you Matt, this is our first tournament together, and obviously, it's going well, so thank you for helping me throughout this week."

Heading into the final, Gauff had lost the first set in three straight matches and the former U.S. Open champion seemed determined to buck that trend, serving to love in the opening game and breaking early for a 2-0 lead.

The American continued to build on that momentum with two more holds to love, before breaking once again to go 5-1 ahead.

After dropping no points in her first three service games, some doubt crept in as Gauff was forced to defend a break point, but she was able to clinch the set with an emphatic forehand winner.

Gauff's serve continued to falter early in the second set, leading to two double faults in her opening service game as Muchova broke for a 2-0 lead, but the American responded by turning up the aggression and approaching the net to break back immediately.

Muchova, who beat Australian Open and U.S. Open champion Aryna Sabalenka and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in previous rounds, appeared deflated after losing her advantage and won just two points in the next three games as Gauff eased to a 4-2 lead.

The pair traded holds before the fourth seed sealed the win by breaking serve when Muchova's backhand sailed long on match point.

Earlier on Sunday, Paris Olympics gold medallists Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini defeated Chan Hao-Ching and Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 6-4 in the women's doubles final to earn their third WTA Tour title of the year.

Ohtani crushed a 372-foot three-run rocket into right field off Padres starter Dylan Cease in the second inning to help the Dodgers tie it up at 3-3.

They had fallen 3-0 behind following a first-inning onslaught from the Padres' powerful batting line-up.

"The stadium was electric and I was just really able to enjoy the game today," said Ohtani, who is widely regarded as the best player in baseball. "He's a good pitcher and it's not easy to get him, but I really wanted to make sure that I could hit one," added Ohtani, who had never played a postseason game before Saturday.

But Ohtani once again helped spark a Dodgers revival in the fourth inning.

Ohtani's single loaded the bases and set up a scoring run for Tommy Edman to cut the deficit to 5-4 before Teoscar Hernandez drove in two runs with a single to right field to make it 6-5.

Dodgers catcher Will Smith scampered in for a run to make it 7-5 in the fifth inning.

Game two takes place in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Dodgers slugger Hernandez paid tribute to the inspirational Ohtani after the win.

"Shohei is Shohei -- I don't think there's anybody playing like him right now," Ohtani said. "I'm just glad he's on our team."

<h2>Yankees, Mets win</h2>

In other playoff action on Saturday, there were wins for the New York Mets and New York Yankees while the Cleveland Guardians also opened their postseason with a victory.

The Mets, who pulled off a ninth inning comeback to stun the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card round, once again conjured a late rally for a 6-2 win over the Phillies in their National League Division Series duel in Philadelphia.

The Phillies looked to be on their way to victory after Kyle Schwarber blasted a leadoff homer to give the home side an early 1-0 lead.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler then blanked the Mets batters through seven innings, giving up just one hit with four walks and nine strikeouts.

But the Mets jumped on the Phillies relievers with a five-run eighth inning, opening up a 5-1 lead before going on to clinch a win that left Citizen Bank Park in shellshocked silence.

"We know we're good, and we've got good players. And we are executing," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

In the American League meanwhile, the Yankees held their nerve in a see-saw battle with the Kansas City Royals to grab a 6-5 victory and a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five series.

Alex Verdugo was the hero for the Bronx Bombers, driving in a decisive single to score Jazz Chisholm in the bottom of the seventh inning for what turned out to be the winning run in a game that saw no fewer than six lead changes.

In Cleveland, Lane Thomas crushed a three-run home run off Detroit reliever Reese Olson as the Guardians put up five runs without an out in the first inning on the way to a 7-0 victory over the Tigers in their American League divisional series.

"It was awesome," Thomas said. "It started with the guys in front of me, so I think it wouldn't have been possible without those guys."

MLB Playoffs: Shohei Ohtani wins thriller for Los Angeles Dodgers with first postseason home run

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be sidelined for "a few weeks" after the Brazilian suffered a hamstring injury in a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Alisson was injured while making a clearance and was forced to limp off in the second half of the Premier League clash at Selhurst Park.

Czech international Vitezslav Jaros, 23, came on to replace Alisson, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitting he does not expect to have his first choice available for a while.

Alisson has been hampered by hamstring injuries and will miss the Premier League leaders' game against Chelsea following the forthcoming international break.

"What I do know is that when a player walks off like he did, it normally means he's not in the Brazil squad and I don't expect him to be in the team for the first match we play after the break," Slot said after Diogo Jota's ninth minute goal sealed Liverpool's sixth win in seven league games this season.

"We have to wait and see but it will be a few weeks for him to be back. I think it is, yes (his hamstring).

"He's clearly our number one, he's the best goalkeeper in the world. It's always a blow when he gets injured, not only for him but us as a team."

Slot endured another injury blow when Alexis Mac Allister was replaced by Dominik Szoboszlai at half-time due to a groin injury.

Unclear how long Mac Allister will be sidelined for, Slot said: "How bad that is, it's not for me to judge at this moment.

"He felt it and said 'it's not good to keep on playing because it could be made worse'.

"It's difficult for me to say if he can play for Argentina. It was in the groin area."

Premier League: Alisson Becker injured and out for ‘few weeks’ in Liverpool’s win at Palace

Fede Valverde and Vinicius Junior strikes helped Real Madrid bounce back from their first defeat since January with a 2-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday in La Liga. Los Blancos lost in the Champions League at Lille but are still unbeaten in the Spanish top flight and moved level with leaders Barcelona, before the Catalans visit Alaves on Sunday.

Valverde's deflected effort and a rocket from Vinicius allowed Madrid to put a four-point gap between them and their third-placed opponents, who battled well but came up fractionally short in the capital.

Madrid's victory was marred by a late injury to defender Dani Carvajal, who had to be taken off on a stretcher.

"It seems a serious knee injury, it will be looked at in the coming hours," Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters. "The players are sad, worried, because something happened that happens a lot, because of the (busy) calendar, and it happened to a very, very important player for us."

Ancelotti said Vinicius would also have medical tests after being taken off late on with discomfort in his shoulder and neck.

The Italian coach started Kylian Mbappe after the French striker had recovered from a thigh problem.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker could only appear from the bench in Madrid's disappointing midweek display.

Mbappe, who France have not selected for upcoming Nations League fixtures, was quiet at the Santiago Bernabeu as his team ground out victory with a determined, rather than inspiring, performance.

Madrid are still missing German midfielder Toni Kroos, although on this occasion he was watching on from a box.

Mbappe sent an early volley off-target from Luka Modric's corner but it was midfield powerhouse Valverde who broke the deadlock after 14 minutes.

The Uruguayan's drive from distance deflected off Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena and arced beyond the reach of goalkeeper Diego Conde.

The visitors, enjoying a strong start to the season under coach Marcelino Garcia Toral, came close when Nicolas Pepe's header clipped the top of the crossbar.

Mbappe had one further chance, bursting into the area with his electric pace, but goalkeeper Conde managed to dispossess him with an outstretched leg.

Villarreal appealed for a penalty early in the second half when Aurelien Tchouameni, playing at centre-back, pulled down Barry, but the French striker was offside.

Baena hit the side-netting of Andriy Lunin's goal with a free-kick, nearly catching out the Ukrainian goalkeeper standing in for the injured Thibaut Courtois.

Vinicius flashed a shot narrowly wide, before his strike partner Mbappe was replaced with 20 minutes to go by Rodrygo Goes.

Brazil striker Vinicius, who is hoping to win a first Ballon d'Or later in October, netted the second with a superb effort from outside the area, which ripped into the top corner.

<h2>Carvajal hurt</h2>

In stoppage time, Spanish right-back Carvajal suffered an injury while attempting to clear the ball under pressure from Yeremi Pino.

"In the end, the result's a less important thing -- Dani's health is what matters," Valverde told Real Madrid TV. "The game was fine, it was neither very good or bad, it was what we had to do to win, two goals was enough."

Villarreal defender Raul Albiol was also concerned about Carvajal.

"It looked bad... let's hope it's the least (damage) possible, because we all know how important he is for Real Madrid and Spanish football," he said.

The centre-back said Madrid were efficient with their finishing and that made the difference.

"They have a lot of attacking punch and more or less with three chances they had two goals," he said.
