Chess Olympiad: India win historic double gold in men's and women's open events

Daniel Dubois retained his IBF world heavyweight title with a brutal fifth-round knockout of Anthony Joshua in an all-British spectacular at Wembley on Saturday.

The 27-year-old dominated the bout from the start in front of 96,000 passionate fans, dropping the former two-time heavyweight&nbsp;champion multiple times.

Dubois had spoken of his determination to "legitimise" his reign as IBF champion after being handed the belt that Oleksandr Usyk vacated in June.

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/football/premier-league-luis-diaz-fires-liverpool-top-spurs-bounce-back-against-brentford-760770">Premier League: Luis Diaz fires Liverpool top, Spurs bounce back against Brentford</a>

He produced a destructive display that raises major questions over Joshua's future, though Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn said he expected his fighter would pursue a rematch.

Underdog Dubois went after his celebrated rival from the start and was rewarded as his big shots wobbled the 2012 London Olympic champion time and again.

In an action-packed fifth round of the breathless clash, Dubois landed the decisive blow, having come through worrying moments himself as Joshua finally found his range.

"Are you not entertained?" he said, speaking to DAZN after the biggest win of his 24-fight career.

"It's been a journey and I'm grateful to be in this position. I'm a gladiator, I'm a warrior until the bitter end.

"I want to get to the top of this sport and reach my full potential."

Oasis's Liam Gallagher fired up the expectant crowd with a live set of three songs before fireworks exploded over Wembley.

The British rivals locked horns in a dramatic opening round that ended with Joshua being saved by the bell after he was floored by a savage overhand right.

<h2>Survival mode</h2>

Joshua, four pounds (1.8 kilograms) heavier than his younger opponent, was in full survival mode in round two and in the following round Dubois had him down again, a left hook causing his legs to buckle.

A standing eight count was followed by the bell and as the fourth round got under way Joshua was floored for the third time, although he protested that it was not a legitimate knockdown.

In a dramatic fifth round, Dubois was momentarily stunned by two right hands and just as Joshua looked to pile on the pressure, the 34-year-old was caught by successive right hands himself and he was down again, this time unable to beat the count.

Both fighters entered the ring intent on earning a shot at becoming undisputed world champion against Tyson Fury or Usyk.

Usyk became boxing's first four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion in May when he beat Fury, simultaneously holding the IBF title along with the WBO, WBC and WBA belts.

The Ukrainian agreed to a rematch with Fury rather than facing mandatory IBF challenger Dubois.

Dubois won the interim IBF title in June and was elevated to world champion status when Usyk vacated the belt.

Joshua was hoping to join an elite group including Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield as a three-time heavyweight champion.

Defeat to Andy Ruiz in 2019 and two losses at the hands of Usyk left his career on the brink.

He then won four straight fights and was aiming to return to the division's top table.

Joshua hinted he would stay in the sport but he will have to do some soul-searching after the devastating loss at Wembley -- a fourth defeat in 32 fights.

"We came up short as a team," he said. "You know I'm ready to kick off in the ring but I'm going to keep it respectful.

"Before I came here, I always say to myself I'm a fighter for life. You keep rolling the dice. I had a fast and sharp opponent, a lot of mistakes from my end."

And Hearn said he was "sure" his man would target a rematch.

"I think that's a given," he said. "But he'll need a rest and it's a dangerous fight. This guy's growing in confidence all the time."

Boxing: Daniel Dubois knock out Anthony Joshua in all-British bout to retain IBF world heavyweight title

Everyone is talking about Rishabh Pant since his return to competitive cricket earlier this year. Even as his sixth Test hundred during the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh made headlines for all right reasons, former Australia captain-turned-broadcaster Ian Chappell reckons Pant would continue being a thorn in the flesh for the hosts during the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series.

Ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah is another name Chappell feels will trouble Australia Down Under; however, he pinpointed India’s goal for the marquee series that begins with the first of the five Tests on November 22 in Perth.

"...India's priority will be to get as many players as possible into form without suffering major injuries. However, the most pressing matters are to achieve those aims with Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant," Ian Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, Pant remains Australia’s top target in the series. Having hammered the mighty Aussies the last time with his two timeless knocks—97 in Sydney and 89* at the Gabba in Brisbane, which eventually denied the hosts a series win over India at home for the second time in a row, Pant would fancy playing in the whites against his favourite opposition.

Impressed with Pant’s ability to deliver and perform following his horrific car crash in December 2022, Chappell said, "Pant's ability to bounce back onto the Test scene is quite remarkable given his horrific car accident. He is a crucial wicketkeeper-batter in the Indian line-up, and he'd give the team a major boost if he's at the peak of his powers for the Australian tour."

Having played in Australia all his life and now looking at things as a cricket analyst, Chappell feels Pant’s wicketkeeping has improved by heaps and bounds, adding that his current technique is suitable for the conditions Down Under.&nbsp;

"If Pant can perform at his best, he's the ideal keeper for Australian conditions. If he's able to continue with his agile performance standing back, that is what is required in Australia. You need a keeper who capably covers a lot of territory to both sides of the wicket."

"Any keeper who fulfils those requirements not only improves the team's fielding but also allows the slip fielders to spread wider to cover extra territory," Chappell continued.

<h2>All eyes on Bumrah and returning Shami</h2>

While Bumrah has been at the centre of things in Indian cricket since his debut, Mohammed Shami, currently recovering from an ankle injury, is also one of the two bowlers who will dictate terms on the upcoming tour, Chappell feels.

The Australian legend continued saying that Team India would aim to have fit enough Bumrah on board for all five Tests, as he remains crucial for his side’s chances of completing a hat-trick of series win in Australia.

"The good form and fitness of both Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj - the two most successful pace bowlers on the last Australian tour - is essential. Of those two, Bumrah is the attack leader."&nbsp;

"A critical part of India's build-up to the Australian tour will be ensuring Bumrah is in form but remains fit to play the bulk of the five Tests,” Chappell continued.

"It would be ideal if the mercurial Mohammed Shami is fit for Australia but the presence of a good left-arm paceman would also improve India's variety in attack,” Chappell said of Shami.&nbsp;

Ian Chappell warns Australia of Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah as visitors chase history Down Under

India has enjoyed being a batting-loving country, but with time, the bowlers have taken the onus and garnered much-needed attention with their sublime outings. Captain Rohit Sharma, who leads perhaps the set of best Test bowlers ever assembled in the country, details how he plans to build a team around bowling. Rohit praised his bowlers for delivering in the first Test against Bangladesh, which India won by 280 runs on Sunday (Sep 22).

Though Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill made headlines for their&nbsp; respective Test tons in the Chennai Test, more so for Pant, who scored a Test century on his return to playing his favourite format, the bowlers still hogged all the limelight, with all-rounder Ashwin returning with six wickets in the second innings.

However, the pacers made the right noises in the first innings, with ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah picking up four wickets and Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj returning with two wickets each.&nbsp;

"No matter what the conditions are, whether we play in India, whether we play outside, we want to build the team around [bowling]," Rohit said after India’s win in the Chennai Test.&nbsp;

"Whatever the condition has to offer, we got to be ready for it. In the last few years, wherever we have played, we have managed to have that in our armoury, whether it is seam bowling options or spin bowling options. You have to give credit to the guys, whenever there is a responsibility, they never shy away from it, and they want to put their hand up and get the job done for the team,” he added.

<h2>Bowling depth pleases Rohit</h2>

With Team India scheduled to play nine more Tests till January next year, with the next being the second one of this series against Bangladesh in Kanpur (from Sep 27 onwards), the selectors, captain, and coach have plenty of options to pick and choose from, considering the workload management.&nbsp;

Though the latest reports suggested that premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami is saved for five Tests Down Under starting November 22, Team India can bank on the newcomers in Akash Deep and uncapped Yash Dayal, retained for the 2nd Test, to play handy roles at some stage during the home season.&nbsp;

Not only in the pace department but even in the spin, India has options like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav to choose from.&nbsp;

Considering that India next faces New Zealand for three Tests, all these players are expected to make it to the playing XI in some games.

IND v BAN: Pressure off batters as India captain Rohit Sharma aims to build team around bowling

Rishabh Pant is back, and back with a bang.&nbsp;

The ace India keeper-batter slammed his sixth Test hundred in the second innings of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh, equalling MS Dhoni’s tally of Test tons. Although he marked his return to cricket earlier during IPL 2024, Pant scored his first hundred since the car crash in December 2022 that sent the cricket fraternity into a frenzy.

Pant missed last year’s IPL, the WTC Final, the Asia Cup and the home ODI World Cup but returned to play this year’s T20 World Cup in the Americas, which India won by beating South Africa in the final.&nbsp;

Away and out with multiple injuries, Pant, in early 2023, was even deemed unfit to play cricket again, let alone do wonders on his Test return.&nbsp;

He underwent several surgeries on his knees, back and shoulder, only to attain full fitness in time for the tight cricket schedule earlier.&nbsp;

Not only did Pant keep wickets for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024 despite Sourav Ganguly (DC’s Director of Cricket) informing that Pant might play only as a batter ahead of the season, but he also captained the side and topped the runs chart, with 446 runs in 13 contested matches.

<h2>Pant stars on Test return</h2>

Meanwhile, against Bangladesh in the first Test of the home season, Pant got out early in the first innings but completed a remarkable hundred in the second to keep India’s nose in front.&nbsp;

Alongside him, number three batter Shubman Gill also hit an unbeaten 119 in the second innings.

“Definitely, it was emotional because coming back, I wanted to score in each and every match, which I couldn't do,” Pant said after the Chennai Test.&nbsp;

“But coming back to Test cricket, where I belong the most, is great. I enjoyed batting out there and just got a little bit emotional. But at the end of the day, just being on the field gives me more pleasure than doing anything else.

"A lot special (equalling Dhoni’s Test ton record) because I love playing in Chennai, first of all. And secondly, after injury, I think I wanted to play all three formats, and this was my first Test match after coming back. Just loving it every day,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Kanpur will host the second Test between India and Bangladesh starting September 27.

Although he marked his return to cricket earlier during IPL 2024, Pant scored his first hundred since the car crash in December 2022 that sent the cricket fraternity into a frenzy. Pant missed last year’s IPL, the WTC Final, the Asia Cup and the home ODI World Cup but returned to play this year’s T20 World Cup in the Americas, which India won by beating South Africa in the final. He underwent several surgeries on his knees, back and shoulder, only to attain full fitness in time for the tight cricket schedule earlier. Pant stars on Test return Meanwhile, against Bangladesh in the first Test of the home season, Pant got out early in the first innings but completed a remarkable hundred in the second to keep India’s nose in front. Carlos Alcaraz hit out at the tennis calendar on Saturday, claiming the schedule is "going to kill us". The 21-year-old French Open and Wimbledon champion is currently taking part in the Laver Cup, his 14th tournament of the year.

Before arriving in Berlin the Spanish star had already played 50 singles matches in 2024, winning three titles and also collecting a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

"Probably they are going to kill us in some way," Alcaraz said Saturday after defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets at the Laver Cup.

Alcaraz said that players had different opinions on the topic, but in his view "the calendar is so tight", adding "Right now there are a lot of injuries."

"Right now a lot of good players are going to miss a lot of tournaments because of that."

He added that the crowded schedule meant he sometimes struggled to motivate himself on the tour.

"Sometimes, you don't want to go to a tournament. I'm not going to lie -- I have felt this way a few times already."

"Sometimes I don't feel motivated at all. But as I've said many, many times, I play my best tennis when I smile and enjoy it on court. That's the best option to keep motivating (myself)."

At the US Open, where he won his first Grand Slam title in 2022, Alcaraz suffered a shock second-round exit to 74th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp.

He admitted he had blundered by not taking a longer break between the Olympics and New York.

At the Paris Games, he lost an emotionally draining gold medal match to Novak Djokovic, just weeks after sweeping the Serb off-court to successfully defend his Wimbledon title.

"I took a little break after the Olympic Games. I thought it was enough. Probably it wasn't enough. Probably I came here without as much energy as I thought I was going to (have)," he said after his US Open horror show.

"I have to think about it and I have to learn about it."

<h2>'ATP doesn't care'</h2>

World number two Alexander Zverev, also playing at the Laver Cup, agreed with Alcaraz and demanded action.

"The ATP doesn't care about our opinion -- it's a money business," said the German. "It's the longest season in sports. It's unnecessarily long. We have an unnecessary amount of tournaments."

Asked if the players would strike, Zverev said "We're not allowed to boycott, we get fined if we don't play tournaments", adding "The tour goes on without you."

"We need to do something about it. It's not an easy solution, but a solution which needs to be made."

Alcaraz and Zverev will not finish their seasons until late November when the Davis Cup Finals take place in Spain.

The 2025 season begins on December 27 with the United Cup in Australia.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz said he hopes he and Jannik Sinner can carve out a storied rivalry like that of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

"I hope so," Alcaraz said when asked if he and world number one Sinner could emulate the dominance of the "Big Three" who amassed 66 Grand Slam titles between them.

"A lot of people talk about it. And I hear it, I'm not going to lie. I hope that our rivalry is going to be almost like what the big three had during their whole career."

In 2024, Alcaraz and Sinner each won two Grand Slams, making it the first year since 2002 when neither one of Federer, Nadal or Djokovic won a major.

"Hopefully we're going to keep going like that, fighting for the great tournaments, sharing great moments. He has pushed me to become a better player every day," added Alcaraz after a 6-4 6-4 win over Shelton that drew Team Europe level on points with Team World at the Laver Cup.

‘Sometimes, you don't want to go to a tournament’ – Alcaraz on players feeling heat due to ‘tight schedule’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels critics of the Premier League champions want the club wiped "from the face of the Earth" over their alleged breaches of financial rules. City, who have dominated English football since Guardiola's arrival in 2016, face a hefty points deduction or even expulsion from the league if found guilty on some or all of the 115 charges relating to financial regulations.

A long-awaited hearing into charges brought by the Premier League in February 2023 finally began at the start of the week.

Guardiola has claimed previously that some of the club's rivals hope to see them found guilty and he appears in no doubt they would expect punishment to be severe.

He brought up the matter unprompted ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium while talking about the tendency of people to overly criticise isolated bad performances.

"During a season, you can say, 'Oh, it was a bad season'," said Guardiola. "But for performances, some people say, 'Oh, it's a disgrace, it is a disaster, it's unacceptable'. No, during 90 minutes it's one bad afternoon when they were better.

"But I would say - I'm sorry, I want to defend my club, especially in these modern days when everyone is expecting us not to be relegated, to be disappeared off the face of the Earth, the world - that we have better afternoons than the opponents. That's why we win a lot."

City faces 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The club is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

However, City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau said Friday a decision to allow LIV Golf players into the US Ryder Cup team and PGA Championship will spark a return to more events by talent from the upstart series.

The PGA of America announced its decision on Thursday, saying it wanted to ensure the best US talent for the Ryder Cup squad and top fields for the PGA.

Since Saudi-backed LIV Golf launched in 2022 and lured away several big name PGA Tour stars, the US tour has banned LIV players from its events, making it difficult for LIV players to earn world ranking points and qualify for majors.

The PGA of America decision ensures LIV eligibility for major spots at the PGA Championship and on US Ryder Cup squads. LIV's Brooks Koepka played for the Americans last year after he won the PGA Championship.

DeChambeau, the 2020 and 2024 US Open champion, expects more opportunities to come for LIV golfers.

"I think it's a great first step."

Talks continue between PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) about a merger deal, but stumbling blocks remain over how to reinstate LIV players and impose punishments on PGA defectors.

'Great first step,' says Bryson DeChambeau on LIV players' inclusion in US Ryder Cup and PGA Championship

Barcelona will be under-strength when they make a LaLiga trip to Villarreal, having lost several players to injury, but coach Hansi Flick said on Saturday he is confident his squad is strong enough to adapt to the challenges it faces.

The injury misery at Barcelona showed no sign of easing up after midfielder Fermin Lopez suffered a new muscular problem in his right thigh while training on Tuesday.

The Catalans were already without new signing Dani Olmo, who is sidelined for up to five weeks with a right hamstring injury, and fellow midfielders Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal, as well as defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen.

"When we started the season, I said there would be no excuses," Flick told reporters ahead of Sunday's fixture. "We're going to be able to manage the game, although we'll be careful with some players carrying a lot of load.

"Tomorrow we'll manage this, although I'm sure that those who come on will be at 100%. The medical team is helping us and we are taking special care with (Pau) Cubarsi, who has been recovering."

Barcelona have made a perfect start to the LaLiga season under the German, with five straight wins putting them top of the standings, four points ahead of defending champions Real Madrid.

Villarreal are fourth in the table with three wins and two draws in five matches.

"We have a great team, and we have shown it," Flick said. "Every season it's the same, there are weeks when you lose several players, but as a coach, it's something you have to accept.

"Now we have to focus on those who are available to prepare them for the next game."

Barcelona's only defeat so far this campaign came in their Champions League opener to Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, where they lost 2-1.

La Liga: Latest injury to Fermin Lopez mounts pressure on Flick as Barcelona gear up for Villarreal visit

Nicolas Jackson fired Chelsea to a 3-0 win against West Ham as the Senegal striker repaid his manager's faith with a decisive double at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Jackson struck twice in the first half before Cole Palmer wrapped up Chelsea's third win in five Premier League games under new boss Enzo Maresca.

It was a well-timed brace from Jackson, who was Chelsea's first-choice striker by Maresca on Friday, despite Christopher Nkunku's match-winning impact against Bournemouth last weekend.

Although Jackson signed a contract extension earlier in September that will keep the Senegal star at Stamford Bridge until 2033, there were calls for Nkunku to start after the French forward came off the bench to net in the 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Jackson scored 17 goals in an inconsistent debut season with the Blues and was guilty of missing a number of big chances.

But the 23-year-old has been in fine form at the start of this season and already has four goals in six games in all competitions.

Chelsea have won all three away league games this season, losing only once, against champions Manchester City, in their five top-flight matches.

Despite a reported power struggle between Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali behind the scenes, former Leicester boss Maresca, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the close season, has made a strong first impression.

After disappointing sixth and 12th-place finishes in the last two seasons, there are encouraging signs that the Italian could be the manager to turn Chelsea's expensively assembled squad of underachievers into top-four contenders.

The Hammers' dismal start to the season has already put new boss Julen Lopetegui under pressure, with the former Spain and Real Madrid boss jeered by the few frustrated fans who hadn't fled the ground well before the final whistle.

West Ham have won just one of their five Premier League games this term, losing three in a row at home to start a league campaign for the first time.

<h2>Rampant Chelsea</h2>

Chelsea made a flying start after just four minutes when West Ham switched off at a free-kick, allowed Jackson to take Jadon Sancho's pass and surge down the right flank.

Jackson cut into the penalty area and beat Alphonse Areola's weak attempted save with ease.

Nicolas Jackson fired Chelsea to a 3-0 win against West Ham as the Senegal striker repaid his manager's faith with a decisive double at the London Stadium on Saturday.

ALSO READ: Lionel Messi escaped yellow card in exchange for jersey during 2007 Copa America, reveals former referee But the 23-year-old has been in fine form at the start of this season and already has four goals in six games in all competitions. Rampant Chelsea Chelsea made a flying start after just four minutes when West Ham switched off at a free-kick, allowed Jackson to take Jadon Sancho's pass and surge down the right flank. Jackson cut into the penalty area and beat Alphonse Areola's weak attempted save with ease. It was Chelsea's earliest goal in a Premier League London derby since Daniel Sturridge netted against QPR in 2012. Nicolas Jackson hits brace as Chelsea win against woeful West Ham in Premier League

With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, Delhi Capitals have zeroed in on the players leading the retention race, with Captain Rishabh Pant first on the list. Shortly after Pant hammered his sixth Test hundred against Bangladesh in Chennai – the joint-most by an Indian keeper-batter in Tests, the latest reports began surfacing, claiming the management locked in Pant as the number one pick.

Per Cricbuzz, the Delhi Capitals’ ownership group confirmed that Pant is the first name on the retention list, while all-rounder Axar Patel and ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav are next in line. Though the BCCI has yet to release the revised retention rules, with the announcement expected shortly, this decision came following a constructive meeting between franchise co-owner Parth Jindal and Pant in Mumbai.

Pant’s current IPL salary is $1.91 million (INR 16 crore), which is likely to increase based on the total player purse allowed to a team and the retention fee guidelines set by the apex cricket body in India.

Meanwhile, Pant returned to on-field cricket in IPL this year, having missed the last edition following his horrific car crash. Though ahead of the start of the tournament, Ganguly – DC’s Director of Cricket, claimed that Pant might only play as a batter, the India gloveman attained full fitness and kept wickets throughout the tournament.

In IPL 2024, Pant scored 443 runs in 13 matches, with an impressive strike-rate of 155.&nbsp;

Participating in the T20 World Cup in the Americas, Pant guided his team to their second title. Currently, on his Test return against Bangladesh in Chennai, Pant completed a hundred (109) in the second innings.

<h2>Overseas options for DC</h2>

Going by the general narrative of five retentions allowed to each of the ten franchises, DC are sure of picking the abovementioned three Indian players, with rookie top-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs leading the race for the remaining two spots in the overseas players category.

In the case of BCCI allowing provision to retain uncapped players, the Delhi team might retain keeper-batter Abishek Porel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the BCCI is closing in on finalising the revised retention rules, with a number of retentions and clarity surrounding bringing back the Right to Match (RTM) card being the top highlights.&nbsp;

Delhi, earlier this year, parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven seasons, with the Australian joining Punjab Kings in a similar capacity ahead of IPL 2025.&nbsp;

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel on top of retention list for Delhi Capitals - Reports

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan admits playing the ongoing Chennai Test with a swollen finger on his bowling hand and a suspected shoulder injury. On day three of the first Test, Shakib became Bangladesh’s oldest Test cricketer, bowling just seven overs and being uncharacteristically poor, with centurion Rishabh Pant hitting him for six fours and two sixes.

Shakib finished with his most expensive Test figures of 129 runs in 21 overs, where, for the fifth time in his Test career, he went wicketless despite bowling over 20 overs.&nbsp;

Visibly struggling to bowl in rhythm, former India cricketer-turned-commentator Murali Karthik – a slow left-armer, approached him and later got to know Shakib was bowling with a swollen yet rigid finger.&nbsp;

“Having seen him and known him for such a long period of time, I did go up to him and ask the reason why he has not bowled enough,” Kartik said.&nbsp;

“And the thing which he said to me is something I completely resonate with. He's had finger surgery on his bowling finger, which is the point of his finger of his left hand. It is swollen, it is rigid, there's no movement, no suppleness to it. So, he feels he is not getting any feeling out of it.&nbsp;

“As a spinner, you need the feeling. Also, he is having issues with his shoulder, so it's a combination of both, and it's tough to bowl in Test cricket where you need that feel as a spinner,” Karthik said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Shakib suffered a left index finger injury during the Sri Lanka game in the 2023 ODI World Cup, missing the game against India earlier with a shoulder injury. The finger injury kept him away from the game for the remainder of 2023, while the left-handed all-rounder suffered an issue in his eyes that prolonged his absence.

<h2>The management must have informed – Tamim</h2>

Former Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal, part of the commentary box, said on air that if Shakib is not 100 per cent fit and playing with an injury, the management should have informed it by now instead of waiting for it to get aggravated.

"Murali Kartik said that Shakib is having trouble gripping the ball due to this finger injury. If that's the case, Bangladesh are playing with four frontline bowlers. The team management should inform whether they knew about this injury or not," Tamim said.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has lost four wickets in the chase of 515, with Captain Najmul Shanto and Shakib at the crease.&nbsp;

While Shanto completed his fifty, batting on an unbeaten 51, Shakib is playing on five off 14 balls.

Bangladesh needs another 357 runs to win this Test.&nbsp;

Argentina great Lionel Messi once escaped a yellow card in exchange for his jersey. Former football referee Carlos Chandia admitted informing Messi of not charging him for a handball offence during the 2007 Copa America semis clash against Mexico. Messi was already booked (with one yellow card) for an offence, and if he had gotten another, he could have missed the final. &nbsp;

In a chat with ESPN on the FShow, the former referee revealed telling Messi of getting away from a second yellow but at his jersey’s cost.

‘This is a yellow card, but it will cost you your jersey,’ and I didn’t show him the yellow card,” Chandia said per multiple outlets.

During the semis clash, Argentina led the game by 3-0, with goals coming from Gabriel Heinze, Roman Riquelme and Messi. However, just before the final whistle, Messi fouled with a handball, with Argentina facing a potential threat of losing their emerging superstar for the final.

“There were two-and-a-half minutes left, and the score was 3-0. Showing him a yellow card would have taken away his chance of playing in the Copa America final,” the former referee said while noting the importance of the second yellow card.

Detailing what happened further and if Messi even obliged&nbsp;the referee's offer, Chandia said Messi gave him his jersey inside the dressing room; in fact, he wanted to give it on the field, but the referee denied it for obvious reasons.

“He gave me the shirt in the dressing room afterwards. In fact, he wanted to take it off on the pitch, and I told him: ‘No, no, no, no; take it to the dressing room’. And he came to the dressing room with the jersey and left it there for me,” Chandia continued.

<h2>Argentina lost, and so did Chandia</h2>

Fortunately, Chandia’s decision to let Messi escape his second yellow card did not directly impact the final’s result as Brazil proved costly for Argentina, with Julio Baptista, Roberto Ayala and Dani Alves scoring for the eventual winners.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, several years later, Lionel Messi emerged as the most decorated footballer ever, with 45 trophies – the most by any player in the game’s history.&nbsp;

Besides winning Copa America several times since, Messi guided Argentina to its third World Cup title in 2022, where they beat France in a penalty shootout.&nbsp;

Pant returned to competitive cricket in IPL this year, later winning the T20 World Cup with India in the Americas. Picked into the squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, Pant got out on 39 in the first innings but completed another Test hundred in the second.

India captain Rohit Sharma declared the innings 287 for four, setting a target of 515. While Gill remained unbeaten at 119, KL was on 22 and not out.

Rishabh Pant hits memorable hundred on Test return against Bangladesh, fans call it ‘greatest comeback’

LIV Golf players will be eligible for the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced Thursday in a move made to ensure access to top talent. Since the early days of the upstart Saudi-backed series, the US PGA Tour has banned LIV players from competing in its events, making it hard for LIV players to earn world ranking points and qualify for majors.

But PGA and LIV players have faced each other at major tournaments in recent years, with LIV's Brooks Koepka winning last year's PGA Championship for his fifth major crown and receiving a captain's pick place on last year's US Ryder Cup team.

"To ensure the PGA Championship will continue to deliver the strongest field in golf and that the US Ryder Cup team will continue to have access to the best American players, the PGA of America board has determined that LIV Golf players will be eligible for both," the PGA of America statement said.

"Going forward, all LIV Golf players are eligible for the PGA Championship and any American player who qualifies for the Ryder Cup on points or is added to the US team as a captain's pick is eligible to compete."

The PGA of America decision solidifies spots in events although several LIV players had been granted special invitations to certain majors in past seasons and Koepka was welcomed into the Ryder Cup squad. Some LIV players have been able to compete in majors thanks largely to wins before LIV began, many competing as past winners of specific majors.

The move shows tensions could be easing in golf's civil war even as talks continue between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, LIV's backers, and the PGA Tour about a merger agreement, negotiations that have stretched well beyond their original deadline of the end of last year.

Talks were conducted last week in New York but among the sticking points remains how to punish former PGA players who defected to LIV should they return and what LIV's future might become.

Golf: LIV golfers to be eligible for US Ryder Cup team, PGA Championship

Arsenal wrap up a gruelling week on the road with a third straight-away game when they face champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and manager Mikel Arteta said his squad had been preparing for the clash since pre-season.

After beating Tottenham Hotspur away in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal flew to Bergamo and got a goalless draw at Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday. They have little time to rest, however, with City next up at the weekend.

Pep Guardiola's side have edged Arsenal to win the title in the last two seasons and once again the two clubs are first and second in the league after four games, with City two points clear at the top.

"We've been preparing for this since pre-season. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it's extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days," Arteta said. "But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally and tactically.

"We're making sure that everyone is ready for it because we're going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break."

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder's return date.

"We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he'll be out for," the Spaniard said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

"We wanted the same as them, we're not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game," he said.

Although City have had Arsenal's number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta's side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at The Etihad Stadium.

"We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances," he said.

"This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we've made another step and we can compete."

Premier League - Arsenal preparing for Manchester City game since pre-season, says Arteta

Newly-appointed Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting revealed what attracted him to accept their offer despite interests from several teams ahead of IPL 2025. Ponting, who previously coached Delhi Capitals for seven seasons, detailed what he told his new team owners and shared his thoughts on retention plans as the mega auction date nears.

Of all the IPL teams since the inaugural edition, Punjab Kings is among the three franchises (DC and RCB) that are yet to put their hands on the trophy. However, Ponting, who expressed keenness in taking over the job, with the willingness and aim to turn the tables around come next season, revealed plenty needs to be done behind the scenes to ensure PBKS takes home the IPL trophy.

In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, Ponting revealed why he chose this unit when other, perhaps former winners, unnamed yet, approached him for the head coach role.&nbsp;

Putting it under ‘Project Punjab’, Punter, as cricket fans call him, revealed the youngsters and the talent pool in PBKS dressing attracted him and that working with them to come on top looked like a challenge, which he willingly accepted.

“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was 'Project Punjab'&nbsp;which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge.&nbsp;

“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL.&nbsp;

“I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL,” Ponting said.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Picking a captain is a priority for me’ – Ponting</h2>

Ricky was blunt and honest in his acceptance of informing the owners to interfere less, letting the coaches and the captain take charge of what would happen on the field. Though he openly talked about having accountability and autonomy within the group, Ponting feels picking the right man to lead does half of the job.

When asked about his role in picking a captain at the upcoming mega auction, Ponting said irrespective of whether the player is an Indian or overseas, he needs the right man for the right job.

“With this mega auction coming up, either we have to decide to retain someone in our current group that we think is the best person for the job, or we have to go into the auction looking for the best possible candidate, whether that's an Indian or overseas player.&nbsp;

“And make sure that him and I work together. If the captain and coach are on the same page and work together, that's when the magic happens,” he continued.&nbsp;

<h3>Ponting on IPL retention rules</h3>

The BCCI will formally announce the revised retention rules ahead of the mega auction, and Ponting feels plenty of work needs to be done to have a settled unit at the helm. Although Ponting disagrees with the ‘more retention is better for the team’ policy, he still backs the current lot of players to help PBKS realise its dream of winning the title.

“It is going to depend on the retention numbers. Say, if it's eight players, then all of a sudden that's 80 players [retained, if all ten teams retain that many].&nbsp;

“There's not going to be a lot of quality players left in the auction, so putting together a squad then would be more difficult. The more the numbers come down on retention, the easier it's going be to put a squad of players together.&nbsp;

“In this current Kings group, you think of some of the young Indian players they have: Prabhsimran [Singh], Ashutosh [Sharma], Shashank [Singh], Jitesh [Sharma], Arshdeep [Singh], Harpreet Brar, Harshal [Patel]. Then among the overseas lot, we have [Liam] Livingstone, [Sam] Curran, [Kagiso] Rabada, [Jonny] Bairstow - there's enough quality,” he noted.

IPL 2025: Ricky Ponting reveals why he chose Punjab Kings over other teams; details on essentials

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani made Major League Baseball history on Thursday, becoming the first player ever to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. Ohtani officially established MLB's 50-50 club with a seventh-inning homer in the Dodgers' 20-4 victory over the Marlins in Miami.

The win clinched the Dodgers' post-season berth -- a first for Ohtani, who never made the playoffs even as he earned two American League Most Valuable Player awards while with the Los Angles Angels. The Dodgers had runners on the corners when Ohtani came to the plate with two outs in the seventh. He launched a curveball from Mike Baumann over the left centerfield wall.

His second home run of the contest gave him 50 for the season, after two stolen bases earlier in the game pushed his tally of steals to 51. The Japanese standout had smashed his 49th home run of 2024 in the sixth, a 438-foot blast that tied Shawn Green's record for most by a Dodger in a single season, set in 2001.

And to cap a monster offensive performance, Ohtani added a third home run in the ninth inning, finishing the game with 51 homers and 51 steals so far this season.

He had six hits in six at-bats, including two doubles for a total of five extra-base hits. He drove in 10 runs and scored four and could only laugh as he returned to the dugout after his final blast, the cheers of fans at LoanDepot Park ringing in his ears.

"To be honest, I'm the one probably most surprised," Ohtani said through a translator of the spectacular show. "I have no idea where this came from, but I'm glad I performed well today."

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, addressing his players in the clubhouse as they celebrated the victory, noted the achievement. "This is a game that has been played for over 200 years," Roberts said. "And this is something that has never been done."

- Something to cherish -

But Ohtani himself tried to keep the focus on the team. "I'm glad that the team won," he said, admitting that with so much attention focused on his 50-50 pursuit, it "was something I wanted to get over as quickly as possible.

"It's something that I'm going to cherish for a very long time." Already the fastest player to reach 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in a season, Ohtani had nabbed his 50th steal in the first inning when he belted a leadoff double and stole third, his well-timed slide allowing him to evade a tag by Marlins third baseman Connor Norby.

Ohtani scored on a sacrifice fly and one inning later he notched his 51st steal, swiping second after a single. With his 50th stolen base, Ohtani surpassed Roberts for the second most by a Japanese-born player in MLB history, a list led by Ichiro Suzuki, who stole 56 in 2001.

Ohtani had earlier this season become MLB's all-time leader in home runs among Japanese-born players when he surpassed the 175 of Hideki Matsui. The 30-year-old, who signed a record $700 million free agent deal with the Dodgers in the off-season, now has 222 career home runs.

Meanwhile, Ohtani is ramping up his rehabilitation from surgery on his throwing elbow. Unable to showcase his pitching prowess this year, he has been throwing bullpen sessions and could face hitters soon.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, addressing his players in the clubhouse as they celebrated the victory, noted the achievement. "This is a game that has been played for over 200 years," Roberts said. "And this is something that has never been done." Also read: Barcelona stunned by Monaco as Arsenal held in UEFA Champions League stalemate What a night. What a ballplayer. Relive Shohei Ohtani's historic performance 👏 pic.twitter.com/0dntraRhXB — MLB (@MLB) September 20, 2024 × - Something to cherish - But Ohtani himself tried to keep the focus on the team. UNBELIEVABLE! LA Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani makes MLB history with first 50-homer, 50-steal season - Watch

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany and his Bayer Leverkusen counterpart Xabi Alonso on Friday joined the growing chorus calling for action on player workload, amid talks of strikes.

Kompany said a cap should be introduced on the amount of games a player can play each year, while Alonso said players must have greater involvement in decisions about the fixture calendar.

Concern about the load on players has grown in recent years, particularly as the number of fixtures has been increasing.

This year's Champions League adds fixtures while FIFA's expanded 32-team Club World Cup will take place this summer, a time when players would normally have a break from games.

Top clubs with European and domestic cup commitments could play up to 75 games this season.

At a press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to Werder Bremen, Kompany said that "it was already a theme during my (playing) career" and labelled it "a very important topic".

"To play 75, 80 games, it gets to a point where it's not realistic anymore," he said. "The solution I've always wanted is to put a cap on the amount of games a player can play as an individual. Put a cap, put a compulsory period of holidays (for players)."

Rodri, the current midfield general of Manchester City where Kompany spent many years as a player, said on Tuesday the "general opinion of the players" was that "we are close to a strike".

"If it keeps going this way, there will be a time when there's no other option," the Spaniard added.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and Real Madrid goalie Thibaut Courtois have made similar statements in recent days.

Speaking before Leverkusen host Wolfsburg in the league on Sunday, Alonso told reporters: "I understand Rodri and the other players.

"Professional players must be involved in these decisions because we want to see good football.

"The schedule is very tight. They have to be heard."

Kompany has previously spoken out on the issue and was a member of the FIFPro players union during his time on the pitch, where he captained Manchester City and the Belgian national team.

The 38-year-old said the cap would be "the best of both worlds" as it would "take away the pressure on the clubs". He also said the model should "always include exceptions for finals -- we can't take that away from players".

Kompany promised squad rotations in the coming weeks as Bayern manages midweek football commitments.

"We are talking about a crowded schedule and stress on the players. Our squad is not a luxury, we need it to achieve our goals."

The coach said a decision on whether veteran captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer would be fit to face Bremen "would be made after training".

The goalie was subbed off at half-time in Tuesday's 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb after falling on his back.

Kompany said Bayern "did not want to take any unnecessary risks", but added that "it looks good (for Neuer)".

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has approved the revised schedule of the upcoming England series, with Multan to host the first two Tests, while Rawalpindi will stage the final match of the marquee series. Per the original itinerary, Karachi was to host the second game, but because the renovation work is underway at the National Stadium, the board decided against going ahead with it.

While Karachi, where England completed their historic clean sweep over Pakistan the last time in 2022, was out of the window, Rawalpindi wasn't considered an option due to a major international conference in Islamabad from October 15-16.

However, at one stage, it seemed like the series could be relocated elsewhere, with Abu Dhabi in the UAE considered an option.&nbsp;

"PCB is thrilled to welcome the England men's cricket team back to Pakistan," Usman Wahla, PCB Director, International, said. "Despite minor adjustments, we are committed to supporting fans and ensuring a memorable tour. We look forward to a fiercely competitive Test series and showcasing Pakistan's renowned hospitality."

Meanwhile, England is due to arrive in Pakistan on October 2, with the home side set to assemble in the city on the same date. The first Test begins on October 7, while the second one is scheduled four days later on October 15. Both teams will move to Rawalpindi for the third and final Test starting October 24.&nbsp;

<h2>Uncertainties put to rest&nbsp;</h2>

The announcement ended uncertainties surrounding England’s tour of Pakistan, for which the touring team named a 17-man squad, with regular captain Ben Stokes and opener Zak Crawley returning to the side.&nbsp;
