Carlos Alcaraz said he will be "at 100%" for the U.S. Open despite stopping his training in New York on Saturday as a precaution after twisting his ankle. Four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz has dealt with a number of injuries in recent times, including an ankle injury that forced him to withdraw in the first round of the Rio Open earlier this year.

Alcaraz's injury worries returned on Saturday, leading him to suspend his training session with Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo. However, the Spaniard said he never feared for his participation in tournament.

"I just stopped my practice for precaution. I didn't feel comfortable enough to keep practising just in case if everything is going to be worse," Alcaraz told a news conference. "A few hours later, I feel good, tomorrow I will try to be practising again without thinking about it.

"I wasn't worried at all for my U.S. Open participation. Obviously, I was angry because I don't want to stop the practice, to respect Cerundolo, as well.

"Tomorrow or in two days I'm going to be my at 100%, for sure. It's about time."

The 21-year-old begins his tournament at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday against Australian Li Tu as he chases a second U.S. Open title after winning in 2022.

Alcaraz said he hoped to approach important matches with a better mentality following his disappointment at losing to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Olympics earlier this month.

"It was a difficult moment for me, losing the gold medal in a really close match that I had opportunities," he said. "But in front of me I had a really good player and he deserved it. So, days after the Olympics I realize that I won the silver medal, a great achievement that I have to be proud of.

"I try to keep going and learn about this. The next important matches of my career I will deal in a different way or a better way than I did in Olympics."

Alcaraz, who last week lost to Gael Monfils in the Cincinnati Open Round of 32, said he is not worried about having played few hard-court matches ahead of the year's final Grand Slam.

"Heading into Roland Garros, I hadn't played too many matches on clay, and it was a pretty good result. In Wimbledon, same thing," added the Spaniard who has won the last two majors.

US Open 2024: Carlos Alcaraz confident of being 100% for 1st round despite injury scare in training

Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic called for "clear protocols" and "standardized approaches" to tennis doping cases on Saturday in response to the announcement that top-ranked Jannik Sinner had escaped a ban despite two positive tests this year.

Djokovic, speaking to reporters as he prepared to defend his US Open title, said players who have bemoaned a lack of transparency in the Sinner case make a valid point.

"I understand the frustration of the players is there because of lack of consistency," the 24-time Grand Slam champion said. "As I understood, his case was cleared the moment basically it was announced. But, you know, I think five or six months passed since the news (of the positive tests) was brought to him and his team.

"So, yeah, there is a lot of issues in the system," Djokovic said. "We see lack of standardized and clear protocols. I can understand the sentiments of a lot of players that are questioning whether they are treated the same."

Several players have suggested Sinner received special treatment because of his ranking, asking why he was not provisionally suspended as the investigation that exonerated him played out.

Sinner insisted on Friday that he was treated the same as any other player.

"There is no shortcut, there is no different treatment, they are all the same process," Sinner said.

The 23-year-old Italian was notified earlier this year he had tested positive for low levels of the banned anabolic agent clostebol during the Indian Wells Masters in March.

An out of competition test eight days later was also positive.

Sinner said he was, in fact, provisionally suspended for several days, although that fact was not made public at the time.

But he and his camp quickly appealed on grounds the drug entered his system when his physiotherapist used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.

He was allowed to continue playing as investigators studied the case, with the International Tennis Integrity Agency announcing on Tuesday he had been cleared of wrongdoing.

He said he had fired physio Giacomo Naldi and trainer Umberto Ferrara -- who supplied Naldi with the spray -- citing a loss of confidence in them.

World number three Carlos Alcaraz, indicated Saturday he thought there was more to the case than had been made public, but he declined to criticize the ITIA decision.

<h2>'Things we don't know'</h2>

"You know, I am pretty sure that there are a lot of things that we don't know, you know, inside the team or inside everything," Alcaraz said. "But if they let Jannik to keep playing, (it's) for something. They said he's innocent, so that's all I know and that's all I can talk about."

Djokovic said the case was a prime example of why the sport needs the controversial Professional Tennis Players Association, which he helped found to give players a greater voice in the sport.

He wondered whether some such cases could be resolved with little publicity, like Sinner's, because the player had the funds to hire expensive, efficient legal representation while other players lacked that ability.

"I don't know," Djokovic said. "Is that a case or not? That's something really I feel like we have to collectively investigate more, to look into the system and understand how these cases don't happen, meaning not the case itself, but how we can standardize everything so that every player, regardless of his ranking or status or profile, is able to get the same kind of treatment."

Novak Djokovic calls for 'clear protocols' in wake of Jannik Sinner’s doping episode

Robert Lewandowski shrugged off a string of missed opportunities to earn Barcelona a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday in La Liga. The 36-year-old striker twice hit the woodwork, among other wasted chances, but kept his cool to slot home a 75th-minute winner for the Catalan giants.

Teenage starlet Lamine Yamal put Barcelona ahead with a deflected effort but Oihan Sancet pulled Athletic level from the penalty spot before half-time.

Lewandowski's strike earned Barcelona their second win from two league matches under new coach Hansi Flick.

"Especially in the first half he could have scored one or two goals... but in the end this is a goal getter, a striker, who scores goals," Flick told reporters. "The second goal was the winner, three points, perfect."

The former Germany and Bayern Munich boss had hoped to utilise new arrival Dani Olmo but with Barcelona unable to register him because of their financial difficulties, the former RB Leipzig playmaker could only watch from the stands.

Pedri started in midfield after injury, along with 17-year-old Spain star Yamal, who shared a joke with his compatriot Nico Williams, a Barcelona target this summer.

The winger is set to stay with Athletic this season and some Barcelona fans whistled him during his engaging battle with Jules Kounde.

Barcelona drew first blood, with Yamal's effort from the edge of the box deflecting home off Inigo Lekue's head.

"I'm very happy for the win, it's important to win at home," Yamal told DAZN. "(For my goal) I saw a bit of space, I saw Nico coming, who is not very intense when it comes to defending, and when I found the space, I shot."

Williams whipped a dangerous cross inches wide of the far post at the other end as Athletic threatened.

Barca striker Lewandowski, who netted twice at Valencia in their La Liga opener, struck the post after more good work by Yamal and Raphinha.

Athletic pulled level shortly before the break when young centre-back Pau Cubarsi clumsily fouled Alejandro Berenguer in the area.

Sancet sent Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way from the penalty spot to send the teams in tied at the break.

Polish veteran Lewandowski hit the woodwork a second time, heading Raphinha's free-kick against the far post from point-blank range.

The Brazilian teed up the forward again with an inviting cross but Athletic goalkeeper Alex Padilla made a superb save.

Barcelona were turning the screw and got their reward when Lewandowski fired home his third goal of the campaign in the 75th minute.

Raphinha played in Pedri, whose cross was palmed out by Padilla into Lewandowski's path and this time he made no mistake.

Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal on scoresheet as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao in La Liga

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick to fire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday and lift the champions to the top of the Premier League table.

They lead on goal difference from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who defeated Manchester United 2-1 with a last-gasp goal, and Arsenal who struck twice late on to earn a gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur handed last-placed Everton more misery with a 4-0 victory and West Ham earned their first win of the season, 2-0 over Crystal Palace.

Manchester City scored three times in less than four minutes after conceding a shock early goal to crush Ipswich and remain perfect in their quest for a fifth consecutive league title.

Haaland kicked off City's trio of goals in 191 seconds with a penalty in the 12th minute. Kevin De Bruyne netted less than two minutes later and Haaland struck again to all but seal the victory at Etihad Stadium.

"Last season (Haaland) struggled a lot, especially at the beginning," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time with the rest with no Euros, he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable."

<h2>Late Winner</h2>

Brighton earned a dramatic home victory over United at the Amex when Joao Pedro scored in the fifth minute of added time.

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored the opener against his former club before Amad Diallo drew Erik ten Hag's men and the game looked destined for a draw.

Brighton's pressure paid off, however, when Simon Adingra chipped the ball over United's defenders for an unmarked Pedro who headed home.

"It was very emotional, always when you get the win in the last minute, it is," Brighton manager Fabian Huerzeler said. "I think we deserved to win, we had a good game not a perfect game."

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured Arsenal's win at Villa.

The victory was a measure of revenge after Villa beat the Gunners twice last season, losses that ultimately ended Arsenal's chances of winning the title.

Ollie Watkins missed two gilt-edged chances before substitute Trossard scored in the 67th minute with his first touch and Partey doubled the lead.

"A strong start is always good, especially for the feeling, how you go into a new season," Trossard said. "It's so early on so it's hard to predict what it's going to be at the end of the season, but it's definitely what we're aiming for, is to win games."

Keeper Jordan Pickford's error and Son Heung-min's brace helped Spurs to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over struggling Everton.

Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored as Tottenham eased to their first win of the campaign against a visiting side who have conceded seven times in two games.

"The performance was good," Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. "It's really encouraging for us."

Second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham to victory at Selhurst Park.

The visitors broke the deadlock when Palace struggled to clear the ball and Soucek steered the ball home.

Hammers captain Bowen added the second, latching on to a brilliant pass by Max Kilman before lashing a left-footed shot into the net.

There were more heroics from the goalscorers when West Ham's fans charged down to celebrate Soucek's goal, causing an advertising hoarding to collapse, trapping a ball boy.

Soucek held the hoarding so the child could wriggle out, with Bowen pulling the boy through his teammate's legs to safety.

"I just managed to grab him out as quick as possible, it was just instinct, just to do it," Bowen said.

Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by Fulham and early struggles continued for fellow league newcomers Southampton who lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

The North Korean table tennis pair of Kim Kum-yong and Ri Jing-sik, who won the silver medal in the mixed team event at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, could face disciplinary action for smiling while clicking a selfie with rivals – the gold medallist Chinese team and third-placed South Korean team at the podium.&nbsp;

As per a report in The Telegraph, Kim Kum-yong is under scrutiny for smiling during the victory photo with South Korean athletes, whom North Korea consider their fierce rivals.

The photo of athletes from two rival nations clicking selfies and smiling on the Olympic podium went viral on social media, with fans worldwide calling it a ‘beautiful moment in Olympic history.’&nbsp;

However, that didn’t sit well with North Korea, where leader Kim Jong Un’s regime strictly controls interactions with neighbours South Korea and others.

Besides, since the team returned home on August 15, they have been subjected to a month-long ‘cleanse’, done on purpose to remove any influence of ‘non-socialist’ culture, per reports in the Daily NK. This process, however, is managed by North Korea’s Ministry of Sport, including a three-stage ideological assessment designed to ensure the athletes align with state-approved values.

The North Korean athletes were asked to avoid any interaction with their South Korean counterparts or athletes from other countries at the Summer Games in Paris. Violation of these directives would lead to punishments, although the degree of penalties remains unclear.

However, historical precedents suggest severe consequences for disobeying orders.&nbsp;

Earlier, following North Korea’s lacklustre show during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the players were subjected to a six-hour public criticism, while their coach was sent to labour construction.&nbsp;

Joe Root continues his purple patch with another fifty in a successful run chase against Sri Lanka during the Manchester Test on Saturday (Aug 24). Root completed his 64th Test fifty, hitting an unbeaten 62 in the fourth innings and helping England win by five wickets late on day four. With that, he closed the gap with Test greats like Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sachin Tendulkar for most fifties by a batter.

Root is now two fifties away from equalling Chanderpaul’s record (66), three from surpassing him and five from going past the legendary Tendulkar (68) to become the Test batter with the most half-centuries.

The right-handed batter has been at the helm of things for England for the longest time. Root's unbeaten 62 was his 10th fifty-plus score in the fourth inning, equalling Geoffery Boycott’s tally, while former captains Michael Atherton and Alastair Cook are ahead with 11 fifties each. Root also surpassed Ian Bell and Denis Compton to become the player with the most fifties (8) at Old Trafford in Manchester.

<h2>Win at Trafford</h2>

England suffered a blow early on day four after late-night reports suggested that Mark Wood would not take any further part in the game due to a right thigh injury. The Sri Lankans made most of this chance, with Kamindu Mendis smashing a brilliant hundred in the third innings, his third in only his fourth Test, taking a lead of 204.

With around four sessions and ten wickets left, England fancied their chances of winning this series opener. Though Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence began scoring swiftly, England lost two wickets, including Captain Ollie Pope on six.&nbsp;

Root joined Lawrence in the middle with the scorecard reading 56 for two.

Lawrence departed soon after on 36, while&nbsp;Root partnered with Harry Brook and first-inning centurion Jamie Smith to help England get closer to the target. Both got out in their thirties but Root stood tall at one end, completing his fifty.

“It was a tricky one today. It was a long, slow grind, but we got there in the end. The outfield is as long as I've seen for a long time in England, and the wicket itself obviously lost a lot of pace throughout.&nbsp;

“So, it was quite hard to time the ball, and I didn't really feel comfortable trying to muscle it. It felt like that would bring the catchers in front of the bat into the game, so just had to accumulate in a slightly different way,” Root said.&nbsp;

Alongside Chris Woakes, who scored eight runs, England completed the run chase with five wickets remaining.

However, the hosts will likely be without Wood for the remainder of the series, with the next Test starting at Lord’s on August 29.&nbsp;

Joao Pedro's 95th minute header handed Brighton a 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday as 31-year-old boss Fabian Hurzeler enjoyed a dream home Premier League debut.

United looked to have snatched a point when Amad Diallo's deflected effort cancelled out Danny Welbeck's first half opener for Brighton.

The visitors could even have won it had Alejandro Garnacho's effort not clipped team-mate Joshua Zirkzee, who was in an offside position, just before the ball crossed the line.

Instead it is Brighton who have a maximum six points from their opening two games under Hurzeler as Pedro was left completely unmarked to head in Simon Adingra's cross deep into stoppage time.

Defeat puts the spotlight back on United boss Erik ten Hag with Liverpool set to visit Old Trafford next weekend.

Ten Hag survived at the end of last season, despite finishing eighth in the Premier League, thanks to winning the FA Cup.

The former Ajax coach got a much-needed 1-0 win against Fulham to open the season last weekend thanks to Zirkzee's late winner.

But the performances in both United's first two league matches of the new campaign have done little to suggest there will be a marked improvement from a dismal season in 2023/24.

Ten Hag kept faith with the side that started against Fulham with Zirkzee and Garnacho again only used as impact substitutes.

Brighton thrashed Everton 3-0 away in Hurzeler's first match in charge and showed they will be a contender to get back into European football next season.

The Seagulls took the lead on 32 minutes when Harry Maguire failed to cut out a dangerous cross and Kaoru Mitoma rolled the ball back across goal for Welbeck to tap in for his 100th career goal.

Within seconds the visitors thought they were level when Marcus Rashford bundled in at the back post after Jason Steele brilliantly saved his initial effort.

However, the offside flag denied the England international.

Brighton flew out of the traps after the break but failed to build on their advantage.

James Milner had an effort cleared off the line by Diogo Dalot before Welbeck headed off the bar.

United had barely been in the Brighton half since the restart until Diallo drove forward, cut inside onto his left foot and found the net via a deflection off Jan Paul van Hecke.

Zirkzee had replaced Mason Mount at the break but after a hero's debut the Dutchman was the villain for what should have been a second United goal.

In a blistering counter-attack, Diallo fed Bruno Fernandes and his low cross was fired goalwards by Garnacho.

However, the ball clipped Zirkzee's knee on its way in and the forward was ruled offside after a VAR review.

That proved to be the turning point as it was Brighton who got the decisive third goal.

Questions will be asked of United's defending as Pedro easily pulled away from Scott McTominay and Matthijs de Ligt to find the space to head back across Andre Onana into the far corner.

The WWE fans might have to wait longer for the dream match between behemoths of The Bloodline – The Rock and Roman Reigns, discussed internally to happen at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Going by the latest reports, the two biggest crowd pullers will face at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ but not at the next one, as the current WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes is set to headline Night 2.

The Rock vs Roman Reigns was penned for WrestleMania 39, but because Rock and the WWE failed to work on the dates, it couldn't happen. One year later, for WrestleMania 40, the creative again pushed for this marquee match, but with the crowd turning on the Rock and Triple H (the COO) for not giving Cody his chance against Roman despite him winning the Royal Rumble, it led to the scrapping of this idea again.

Per Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the two matches that could headline WrestleMania 41 are probably Roman Reigns vs Solo Sikoa &amp; The Rock vs Cody Rhodes. Per his words, the creative team floated this idea since this year’s Mania.

Star Indian cricketers KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya appeared on a now-deleted infamous ‘Koffee with Karan’ episode that aired in 2019, which later led to their suspension from Indian Cricket over some of their remarks being deemed inappropriate and offensive by viewers. Five years later, a changed and more mature KL Rahul recalls what happened after the episode aired and how his life turned upside down.

At that time, when that episode made headlines within the Indian cricket fraternity and fans, KL and Pandya were in Australia. The controversy erupted, cutting short their stay Down Under as BCCI recalled the pair home.

Appearing on Nikhil Kamath's YouTube podcast, featuring guests Kriti Sanon and Badshah, KL Rahul candidly discussed how that episode profoundly impacted his life. The India keeper-batter Rahul admitted that the interview left him deeply scarred and changed him as a person.

"I used to be good with trolling. I used to think I don't care. I was much younger back then. A couple of years back, I was exposed to a lot of trolling. If I sat I got trolled, if I stood I got trolled," Rahul said.&nbsp;

"The interview was a different world. That changed me. Completely changed me. I was a very soft-spoken person growing up. Then I played for India and became very confident. People will know I have been in a room of 100 people.”

"Now I don't because that interview scarred me massively. Getting suspended from the team. I have never been suspended in school, or punished in school. I don't know how to handle it. I did mischief in schools, but nothing to get me expelled from school or my parents have come," Rahul noted.

<h2>Life afterwards</h2>

Meanwhile, KL and Hardik have come a long way since that episode. While Hardik was appointed the ODI vice-captain for the 2023 World Cup, later replacing Rohit Sharma as the new captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, Rahul became the first-choice keeper-batter in the One-Day format.&nbsp;

Both played handy roles in the ODI World Cup last year, helping the hosts reach the final. Though Pandya got ruled out during the Bangladesh tie, KL Rahul was among the runs, besides getting acknowledged for his wicket-keeping.

I did mischief in schools, but nothing to get me expelled from school or my parents have come," Rahul noted. Life afterwards Meanwhile, KL and Hardik have come a long way since that episode. While Hardik was appointed the ODI vice-captain for the 2023 World Cup, later replacing Rohit Sharma as the new captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, Rahul became the first-choice keeper-batter in the One-Day format. Both played handy roles in the ODI World Cup last year, helping the hosts reach the final. Though Pandya got ruled out during the Bangladesh tie, KL Rahul was among the runs, besides getting acknowledged for his wicket-keeping. KL and Pandya are in the fray for spots in the ODI side for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. (With inputs from agencies)

England premier seamer Mark Wood is ruled out of the ongoing day four of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester, the ECB confirmed on social media. Wood pulled up two balls into his 11th over of the second inning later on day three, with the latest reports suggesting he suffered a right thigh injury. Wood left the field immediately after that.

With the tourists sitting in a comfortable position early on day four, they would like to bank on Wood’s absence and snatch an unlikely win out of England’s jaws with a handy lead.

However, if Wood is ruled&nbsp;out of the second Test at Lord’s, Olly Stone will return to the playing XI for the first time in three years.

Meanwhile, Wood, 34, has been the first name on England’s Test side following his return during last year’s Ashes. Having made headlines for bowling rockets over these years, Wood was on the top of his game this summer against West Indies in three Tests and the ongoing one versus Sri Lanka.

Alongside veteran batter Joe Root and emerging superstar Harry Brook, Wood was the only third player to be handed a three-year central contract - meaning he will be on that flight to Australia for next year’s away Ashes.

England’s pace bowling department has undergone significant uproars recently. The veteran duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson retired, and Ollie Robinson got dropped. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the fourth day in Manchester, Test legend Broad said he would be shocked to see Wood playing the next match at Lord’s, adding England must take calculated risks and avoid putting Wood under scrutiny.

"Unconfirmed what the grade is, I suppose,” Broad said. "When we say Ben Stokes do his hamstring, here is was a grade two, and he was in immediate pain.

"Mark Wood actually ran into bowl.

"I would be amazed if it is anything too serious, but with his style of bowling, you don't want to push it too far or cause any more damage.

"I would be shocked if they risked him at Lord's on Thursday. Then you try and get him fit for the Oval,” he continued.&nbsp;

Two former India keeper-batters, Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni, are again back at making headlines. Karthik, who picked his all-time India XI from past eras on Independence Day (August 15) this year, not only omitted ex-captain and batting great MS Dhoni but also didn’t name an outright gloveman, with netizens taking a dig at him on social media. Days after putting out his best XI, Karthik apologised for ignoring MS Dhoni on the list.

Here is Dinesh Karthik’s revised all-time XI –&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (newest addition), Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Jasprit Bumrah and Zaheer Khan

Taking to Cricbuzz, Karthik said, “Bhai log. Bada galti hogaya (Guys, I made a big mistake.) Genuinely it was a mistake.”

Although there was no wicketkeeper in Karthik’s initial all-time XI, Rahul Dravid’s presence saved his day, as Dravid, back in the day, kept wickets for a couple of years, including during the 2002 Champions Trophy and 2003 ODI World Cup. However, Karthik admitted he realised not picking any keeper only after the episode came out.&nbsp;

“I realised only when the episode came out. There were so many things happening that when I put this 11, I forgot the wicketkeeper. Luckily, Rahul Dravid was there, and everybody thought I was going with a part-time wicketkeeper.&nbsp;

But, genuinely, I didn’t think Rahul Dravid was a wicketkeeper, 'Can you believe being a wicketkeeper; I forgot to have a wicketkeeper? It is a blunder,” Karthik issues clarification.

<h2>‘Thala Dhoni is a lock-in for all formats’</h2>

Speaking on missing out on picking MS Dhoni in his all-time XI, Karthik said Dhoni is a lock-in as a keeper-batter across all formats, not just in India XI but also in World XI.&nbsp;

Karthik, who made his international debut before MS Dhoni and having shared the dressing room with the Thala, as most fans call MS, called him ‘one of the greatest cricketers to have played the game.’

“And for me, let’s be clear. Thala Dhoni is a lock in any format, not only in India. I feel he is one of the greatest cricketers to have ever played the game. If I had to redo that team, one change I would make is Thala Dhoni in at 7. And he will be the captain of any Indian team that is there,” Karthik added.

Meanwhile, Karthik also retired from the IPL, where he last represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024. On the other hand, MS Dhoni's IPL future stays in limbo, as he is yet to confirm his participation for the next season.&nbsp;

American Coco Gauff begins her U.S. Open title defence on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, headlining a wide-open women's field that includes world number one Iga Swiatek and last year's runner-up Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff plays France's Varvara Gracheva in the opening round and hopes to put a series of frustrating performances behind her - including early exits from Toronto and Cincinnati - to recapture the magic of her run to a maiden major title.

"I feel like it was a blessing in disguise I lost so early (in Cincinnati), because I was able to actually train, which I hadn't been able to," said Gauff, who competed in the Paris Games. "I do my best results when I come off a training block. I was able to train for a good week and a half and obviously still have a couple more days to do that."

Gauff could meet Sabalenka in the semi-finals, with the Belarusian hungry for the trophy after coming close but never quite getting the title within her grasp.

She reached at least the semi-final stage of the tournament over the last three years and has learned lessons from tough defeats in New York.

"Those tough losses definitely motivated me a lot to hard work and to improve things which didn't work in the previous years," said Sabalenka.

After retaining her title in Australia, Sabalenka endured a rough mid-year stretch as she suffered a back injury and skipped Wimbledon with a shoulder injury.

She arrived in New York confident and fit, however, after skipping the Olympics to focus on her health and winning the Cincinnati tune-up tournament.

"I was really happy with the level I played. It's not like it's weight out of my shoulder. It just little, like, happy moment before going to the U.S. Open," said Sabalenka, who closes out Monday night's programme at Louis Armstrong Stadium against Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon.

Poland's Swiatek hopes to add another title to a memorable year, after she picked up her fifth major at the French Open and won in Qatar, Indian Wells, Madrid and Rome, as well.

She picked up bronze at the Paris Games and admitted that it has taken some adjustment going from the clay courts of Roland Garros to the hard courts of North America, as she lost to Sabalenka in the Cincinnati semi-final.

"It's been a really intense season, and after the Olympics, it hasn't been kind of, you know, easy. So I feel the best when I'm just focused on practising and grinding on the court," the 2022 winner told reporters.

"I'm just going to try to keep that mindset and that attitude."

She opens her campaign against lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova on Tuesday on Ashe.

Contenders lurk around every corner in New York, as a gruelling year has left the title vulnerable for those hoping to capture a maiden major title.

Italian Jasmine Paolini made a name for herself as a runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, while China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen is ready to make an impact after reaching her first major final in Australia.

"I don't want to let myself slip again. I really want to improve one more time in my mental side," said Zheng. "If I'm able to do that, I think I will really break through some wall that I have for myself."

The U.S. Open begins on Monday.

Tennis: Coco Gauff, Swiatek and Sabalenka headline tough US Open 2024 draw

Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho has the potential to become a world-class player if he keeps working hard, manager Erik ten Hag said ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.

Garnacho, 20, assisted United forward Joshua Zirkzee's debut goal in their 1-0 league opener win against Fulham and scored in the Community Shield against Manchester City, which United lost on penalties.

The Argentina international, alongside Kobbie Mainoo, also scored in United's 2-1 FA Cup victory over City and provided many bright moments with seven league goals in United's lacklustre season, as they finished eighth.

"To make that jump to being a world-class player, he has a long way to go. It starts with hard work," Ten Hag told reporters. "That has brought him to where he is now and that will bring him to being a world-class player because I agree he has the potential."

"We need (exciting players) but I think every team at the top needs a player with the X factor. Garnacho definitely has it in him to become that player. If you want to be that player - world class - then you have to do it consistently and he has a high potential, 100%."

United's 19-year-old midfielder Mainoo wrapped up England's Euro 2024 campaign as a key player in former England manager Gareth Southgate's squad and Ten Hag said the experience has honed Mainoo's skills.

"Those experiences will only help him become a better player (this season). A perfect midfielder is one who is very good in attacking and very good in defending. He is a player who can do it, and he can play as an attacking midfielder and as a holding midfielder."

Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho has skills to become world-class player: Ten Hag

A verdict expected in coming months on Manchester City's alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations will not affect the players' performance, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town.

City were charged in February 2023 with 115 counts since their acquisition by City Football, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group. The club could face penalties such as a points deduction or relegation if found guilty.

Nottingham Forest and Everton were docked points last season for their breaches of the league's profit and sustainability rules.

City deny the charges and are contesting them. An independent commission will review allegations dating back to 2009. Guardiola said City will accept the verdict.

The Times of London said a hearing in the case is to start next month with the outcome known early next year.

"I am happy it starts soon and hopefully it finishes soon for the benefit of all of us," Guardiola told reporters. "Especially for the club, but for all the other Premier League clubs, like for all the people that don't wait for the sentence.

"I wish from deep in my heart to go to the trial, the independent panel - and I say it again, independent panel - and as soon as possible release what happened, and we will accept like always we have done."

Even with the lingering concerns around the club, City added a record fourth-straight Premier League title last season after winning the treble in the 2022-23 season.

Asked about the effect of the case on his team, Guardiola said: "No, we have been three or four years talking about that. We know it is going to happen, we accept it and focus on our matches."

Manchester City’s charges hearing will not affect form, Pep Guardiola says

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois announced on Thursday that he would no longer play for the Belgium national team under current coach Domenico Tedesco.

Courtois, widely regarded as one of the best keepers in the world, was left out of the Belgium squad for the European Championship following a row with Tedesco last year. He was replaced by Koen Casteels for the Euros.

"I feel privileged to have had the honour of wearing the national jersey. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being able to do so more than 100 times," Courtois posted on his social media accounts. "Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management.

"In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality."

The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who suffered an injury but recovered in time to help Real Madrid win the Champions League in June, added the Belgian FA has accepted his position and the reasons that led to the decision.

"I regret possibly disappointing some fans but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals. Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding," Courtois said.

Tedesco's tactics raised questions about whether he was the right man for the job after Belgium were eliminated by France in the last 16 of the Euros.

The Italian-born German manager began his tenure in February 2023 and signed a contract extension before the start of the Euros.

However, the team that spent nearly three years at the top of the world rankings and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup has endured mediocre results under Tedesco.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois announced on Thursday that he would no longer play for the Belgium national team under current coach Domenico Tedesco. Star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to not play for Belgium under coach Domenico Tedesco

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is looking for a big improvement from his side when they play their first home game of the LaLiga season, against Valladolid on Sunday, with Kylian Mbappe making his Santiago Bernabeu debut.

Ancelotti was left fuming after last weekend's start to the season -- a lacklustre 1-1 draw at Mallorca -- telling reporters: "We had to do better, show more attitude."

Mbappe and most of Real's so-called "New Galacticos" put on a dreary performance at Mallorca, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois working his magic a couple of times to salvage a point.

"It was a game we could have lost because we didn't have balance," Ancelotti said. "It wasn't a good game. We are a very attacking team and defensive balance is a fundamental part of the way we are built."

At Mallorca, and in their UEFA Super Cup 2-0 win against Atalanta last week, the Italian manager started Mbappe in a central role as a forward just in front of a three-man line formed by wingers Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo either side of Jude Bellingham, with only two pure midfielders in Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.

With the departure of German midfielder Toni Kroos, who retired after a remarkable decade with the Spanish giants, Ancelotti decided he was better off giving up stability in the centre of the pitch to gain more ammunition in attack.

However, against Mallorca and in a large part of the Atalanta clash, Mbappe was not the factor he was expected to be and Real were vulnerable to counter attacks, suggesting they may need to work harder than anticipated to fit their blockbuster signing into the squad.

"We struggled to steal or press after losing the ball," Ancelotti said. "Defending is a collective commitment. The balance is found with the players thinking about the same thing. It is a problem of a team that did not understand that this was a key aspect of the match."

Under the shiny new roof that will shield a sold-out crowd from the relentless sun on a scorching summer afternoon in Madrid, Real face a newly-promoted Valladolid who are fired up after kicking off their campaign with a deserved win against Espanyol.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona also began the season well, with a Robert Lewandowski double allowing them to fight back to win 2-1 at Valencia despite them missing several key players and featuring three 17-year-olds from the start of last Saturday's game.

Coach Flick will still be unable to count on new signing Dani Olmo, who has yet to be registered with LaLiga due to Barca's breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, for Saturday's match against last year's Copa del Rey champions Athletic Bilbao.

Barca are running against the clock to try to negotiate the sale of players such as Vitor Roque, Ilkay Gundogan or Clement Lenglet so they can profit on the balance sheet and be allowed to register the versatile attacking midfielder who stood out in Euro 2024, helping Spain to win the title.

In Madrid on Sunday, Atletico will host last year's surprise package Girona after both sides were held to draws in disappointing openings last weekend. Manager Diego Simeone will have at his disposal new signings Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham sustained an injury during training, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday.

The 21-year-old England international was a key player last season when Real won the Champions League and Laliga titles.

"Bellingham had a blow, he is being assessed," Ancelotti told a press conference when asked whether Bellingham would be available for Sunday's LaLiga clash against Real Valladolid.

Ancelotti, who usually talks to the media one day before each Real game, decided to change the schedule so he could hold his final training session behind closed doors at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Ancelotti said his unusual move had nothing to do with Real's drab performance in a 1-1 draw at Mallorca last weekend which left the usually calm and collected Ancelotti fuming at his players' effort.

"It's nothing special, I'm doing it just to test the pitch, because it has changed compared to last year. I want the players to try the new pitch to see how they feel there. There is nothing superstitious or anything else behind it," Ancelotti said.

The Italian insisted, however, that he needs a better performance in order to play with four attacking players in Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Bellingham up front and only two conventional midfielders.

"It was a pretty clear game to evaluate, we lacked balance, it's not very complicated. There is a clear solution," Ancelotti said. "With such an attacking team, the forwards have to work a bit harder. We have tried to fix it with a lot of work this week."

Ancelotti expects a warm welcome by Real's fans for Mbappe's home debut which is expected to be sold out.

"It's going to be a beautiful day for Mbappe, playing for the first time at the Bernabeu wearing Real's jersey... The fans are going to enjoy it a lot, I'm sure of that," Ancelotti said.

FIR lodged against Shakib Al Hasan over alleged murder charges during Bangladesh unrest

Cricket’s apex body – the International Cricket Council (ICC), is said to be mulling over creating a multi-million dollar fund ($15m) to save the dying format – Test Cricket, per the latest reports. With the growth of franchise-based T20 cricket worldwide, mainly for two reasons – the money flow that comes with that and the exposure that players get by playing in different conditions, the ICC felt the need to take the required measures to preserve Test cricket.

Per a report in The Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Australia (CA) were the first to float this plan in January early this year, which later got the backing of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who might become the next ICC chairman.

The funding pool will serve several purposes, from bearing the costs of overseas tours for financially struggling countries to increasing the minimum wage for all Test players to USD 10,000 per game. It will help boards like Cricket West Indies (CWC), which has struggled to confine their talent to represent the country across formats, instead of getting distracted by the lucrative offers from franchise-based league cricket.

"The fund would ensure a minimum Test payment for all players, thought to be USD 10,000, and pay the costs of overseas tours for struggling countries," the report stated.

"It's fantastic to see some momentum behind the Test match fund," CA chairman Mike Baird said.&nbsp;

"We need to take away the barriers and encourage Test cricket to be the best of the best. To retain that history and that legacy, which goes alongside the newer forms of white ball cricket," he added.

<h2>BCCI, CA and ECB not to be benefitted</h2>

Meanwhile, the top three wealthiest cricket boards – BCCI, CA and ECB, are unlikely to reap the rewards of this as their players already receive hefty salaries to represent their Test teams.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the BCCI also introduced an incentive program for the senior men’s cricket team to motivate them to focus on Test cricket, with the board offering increased salaries for those abiding by it.&nbsp;

Per that scheme, an Indian Test cricketer, in addition to receiving INR 15 lakh as a match fee, will pocket a whopping INR 45 lakh match-wise under this program if he participates in at least 75 per cent&nbsp;of Tests within a yearly cycle that runs from September to October.

Besides, the players who feature in between 50-75 per cent&nbsp;of matches would receive a bonus of INR 30 lakh per match. Those picked in the squad but not selected in the playing XI will receive half of the amount under both brackets.

However, the players who appear in less than half of the matches (less than 50 per cent) scheduled during a window will not be eligible to get paid extra.&nbsp;

ICC mulls creating multi-million dollar fund to save Test cricket; players minimum wage to increase- Reports

Former England opener and one of their assistant coaches, Marcus Trescothick, admits being undecided over considering the white-ball head coach role. In the absence of Matthew Mott - former ODI and T20I head coach, who parted ways following the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the Americas, Marcus will be England’s interim coach for the white-ball series against Australia starting next month.

Marcus is working with England’s Test side for their ongoing home series against Sri Lanka, and although he admits to enjoying his role while planning for the upcoming series, Marcus hasn’t sat and thought about pouncing on the opportunity to become England’s white-ball head coach.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, because of the tight scheduling, where England will play their first T20I against Australia on September 11 in Southampton – just a day after England and Sri Lanka’s scheduled close of play on the fifth day of their third and final Test at the Kia Oval, Marcus will leave the Test set up after the second game to linkup with the white-ball squad.

“It's not something I'd ever thought about before until I got this opportunity now,” Trescothick said. “I'm not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I've been very much focused on the job we're doing here [with the Test team].

“You plan your winter: we're off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I'm so ingrained in that at the moment, I've not really sat down and said, 'Right, this is where I'll try to go, this is what I'll try to do'. I'm looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I'm really excited about doing the job. We'll work it out a little bit more from there,” he continued.

<h2>ECB has a decision to make</h2>

The ECB is yet to advertise the white-ball head coach role vacated by Mott, and Marcus could become the lead contender if England does well against Australia at home.

Besides, his former teammate Andrew Flintoff is also in the race to become their white-ball coach, although chances of that are lesser because he hasn’t ‘gelled’ with Jos Buttler, per a report in the Telegraph.&nbsp;

Outside of these two, another contender for the head coach role is former Sri Lanka captain and batting great Kumar Sangakkara, who is yet to confirm applying for the post.&nbsp;

ECB has a decision to make The ECB is yet to advertise the white-ball head coach role vacated by Mott, and Marcus could become the lead contender if England does well against Australia at home. Besides, his former teammate Andrew Flintoff is also in the race to become their white-ball coach, although chances of that are lesser because he hasn’t ‘gelled’ with Jos Buttler, per a report in the Telegraph. Outside of these two, another contender for the head coach role is former Sri Lanka captain and batting great Kumar Sangakkara, who is yet to confirm applying for the post. A court in Peru has acquitted the country's former football federation president Edwin Oviedo of the murder of two trade unionists in a long-running case, his lawyer said Thursday.

"Edwin Oviedo's innocence has been proven," his lawyer Cesar Nakazaki told reporters following the Superior Court's decision in the northern region of La Libertad.

"The court decided to acquit him after verifying that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence," he added.

Oviedo was accused of ordering the murder of two trade union members working for a sugar business he controlled, who were shot dead in 2012 and 2015.

The public prosecutor had requested in 2019 a 52-year prison sentence for Oviedo, who has always maintained his innocence.

The legal case forced him to resign as president of the Peruvian Football Federation in December 2018.

Peru's national football team thrived under Oviedo's stewardship, which began in January 2015, qualifying three years later for the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Oviedo spent 18 months in pre-trial detention and then another year-and-a-half under house arrest after being accused of being the ringleader of a "corruption network" and the mastermind behind the murder of the two unionists.

The prosecution claimed that Oviedo had ordered the killings in retaliation for protests organized against him at his sugar company.

Peru court acquits former football federation president Edwin Oviedo of two murder charges

New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee admits he doesn’t have answers to how and when this long-standing club vs country debate can end but has urged all cricketing boards and the franchise leagues to come together and find a solution. With plenty of first-team players deciding against signing a central contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to make themselves available for franchise-based leagues worldwide, Southee feels ‘something’ needs to be done to bring in balance and help players take a call based on their preferences.

Key players like former all-format captain Kane Williamson and speedsters Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne have opted out of the central contract list offered by NZC in recent years. Moreover, attacking opener Finn Allen, who signed a two-year deal with Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, and Devon Conway, who signed a casual contract with NZC, are the latest to join the list.

Though Conway will remain available for all nine Tests this season, he will miss the white-ball competitions in January 2025, like Williamson, to feature in the SA20 tournament.&nbsp;

"Yeah, I think that's decisions that each individual board are taking into account," Southee said on the sidelines of the CEAT cricket rating awards in Mumbai.&nbsp;

"So, at this stage, obviously, the franchise leagues and the franchise world are growing. It would be nice to see the international [boards] and the leagues working together in some way because, especially Test cricket, I think for a lot of players, is still the pinnacle of the format.

"I guess it's the way that cricket is going and then the amount of T20 leagues that are popping up. To look at it from Kane and Devon's point of view, they're still committed to New Zealand cricket, and we've got nine Test matches coming up. So, they're committed to those Test matches,” he continued.

<h2>A problem in the hindsight</h2>

Although all these players not signing a central contract with NZC is not the biggest problem within their cricket structure as of now, Southee doesn’t discount the chances of it creating havoc in times to come.&nbsp;

Committing to Test cricket, a format he calls his favourite and ‘closest to the heart’, Southee admits he doesn’t have answers to how one solution can solve this growing issue within the cricket circuit worldwide.&nbsp;

“I don't have the answers. Right now, I don't think many people do. So I think it's about working out what's best for each individual board and their players. New Zealand Cricket seems to think that's the best way for the next 12 months.&nbsp;

“I don't think Kane and Devon will miss a lot of cricket for New Zealand. So for them to have the flexibility in doing that, but still also be committed to New Zealand, which I think that's where the casual playing agreement comes in,” the NZ Test skipper said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will travel to Asia to play six Tests - one against Afghanistan in India, two against Sri Lanka and then three against India. Upon returning home, New Zealand will host England for the three Tests.&nbsp;

Ace Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was back on the track during the Lausanne Diamond Meet on Thursday (August 22), shortly after his Paris Olympics 2024 heroics, where he settled for the silver medal. Neeraj began the fourth round in fourth place and moved up in the top three with an impressive 89.49m in his fifth attempt, only to keep his best for the last. On his sixth and final attempt, he recorded his SB, which was 0.4m more than the one he clocked at the Paris Games (89.45m). Germany’s Julian Weber finished third with the best throw of 88.37m.

After falling just short of a US&nbsp;Open title last year, a fully fit and confident Aryna Sabalenka returns to New York hoping a mid-year break to focus on her health will allow her to break through at the year's final Grand Slam.

Sabalenka suffered a lower back injury this year, struggled with illness at the French Open where she lost in the quarter-finals, skipped Wimbledon with a shoulder injury and then sat out the Paris Olympics to get ready for the hard-court season.

The reigning twice Australian Open champion has since said the much-needed break allowed her to properly rehabilitate her injuries and has left her feeling fresh mentally.

She now finds herself coming off a dominant run in Cincinnati where she did not lose a set all week, including in a semi-final clash with world number one Iga Swiatek and in her convincing win over Jessica Pegula in the final.

Now the 26-year-old Belarusian heads to New York for the August&nbsp;26-September&nbsp;8 US&nbsp;Open feeling confident given it is her favourite Grand Slam and she has performed well there before.

Sabalenka has reached the second week in four of her six US&nbsp;Open main draw appearances, including each of the last three years as she made the semi-finals in 2021 and 2022 before finishing runner-up to Coco Gauff a year ago.

"I would say that I'm really playing great tennis," said Sabalenka. "Probably not like the best tennis I can play, but I'm definitely getting there.

"And with every match I play I feel better, better and better, and hopefully at the US&nbsp;Open I can keep building the level and I can reach maybe an even higher level than I used to play."

There is little to suggest world number two Sabalenka is not poised to make another deep run in New York given she is one of the most physically dominating players in the world and has a game tailor-made for hard courts.

Sabalenka, who showcases a strong-willed mentality whenever she takes to the court, boasts not only a powerful serve but also aggressive baseline play and explosive groundstrokes and is perfectly comfortable at the net.

At last year's US&nbsp;Open she dropped one set in her march to the final, where she broke Gauff three times en route to grabbing the first set before the American forced a decider in which her own game reached another level.
