Bayern Munich kick off their Bundesliga campaign at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday with the spotlight firmly on new coach Vincent Kompany as he looks to guide the club back to the top of German football.

The Bavarians, record German champions and the country's wealthiest club, were upstaged last season by Bayer Leverkusen, who stormed to a domestic league and cup double without defeat.

Former Belgium international Kompany, who replaced Thomas Tuchel in the dugout, has been working to restore order in the Bayern ranks and instil confidence among his players.

"Last year they had the same quality in the team but communication between the coach and players was not perfect," former Bayern and Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus told an international media round table earlier this week.

"Bayern means 'we are a family' and this we have to live by day after day. Kompany is the coach who can bring that atmosphere back to the team."

Bayern spent around 100 million euros ($111 million) to bring in winger Michael Olise from Crystal Palace and defensive midifielder Joao Palhinha from Fulham.

They also signed defender Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart to shore up a backline that leaked goals during last season's trophy-less run.

"I have a positive feeling regarding this team that seems again to be inspired and ready to attack once more," said Bayern sports director Max Eberl.

But Leverkusen, who have largely kept their squad intact and retained coach Xabi Alonso, will not simply roll over.

The never-say-die attitude that served them so well last season was evident once again on Saturday when they scored a late equaliser in the German Supercup against VfB Stuttgart before winning the title on penalties.

"They have less pressure in Leverkusen than Munich this season," said Matthaeus. "Leverkusen don't have to win. Bayern, after their last two seasons, not only have to win but have to perform as well. Now that is pressure."

Leverkusen officially open the Bundesliga season with Friday's game at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

For last season's surprise runners-up VfB Stuttgart, it will likely be a tougher ride than their previous campaign having lost Ito to Bayern and top scorer Serhou Guirassy and defender Waldemar Anton to Borussia Dortmund.

The arrivals of Germany internationals Anton, Pascal Gross and Maximilian Beier could restore Dortmund's credentials as title contenders, though they will have to hope Guirassy fills the gap left by Niclas Fuellkrug following his departure to West Ham United.

New era begins at Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany as fight for Bundesliga title resumes

‘Why fix something that is not broken’- a quote often used in cricket for various contexts seems to come to life in Steve Smith’s case.

A Test veteran averaging beyond 60 batting at number four opened for Australia in the last eight innings. With the India Test series looming, the former batting great Matthew Hayden expressed displeasure over this decision, preferring to watch Smith return to his favourite position in the marquee series.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai, Hayden said he understands George Bailey’s (chief selector) comments on why they preferred Smith over specialists Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw.

While Smith’s highest score batting at the top is 91, his total tally reads 171 runs from eight outings, and Hayden, who opened in Tests all his life, admitted it’s never easy to adapt against the new ball, even for the best of batters.

"The rationale that [national selector] George Bailey gave was correct in so far as that he was choosing his best top six batsmen," Hayden said.

"Now, you can't argue with Steven Smith, he is averaging 65 [57] in Test-match cricket.... 32 Test-match hundreds.

"But, the role of an opening batsman compared to a middle-order batsman is very different. And it didn't take long to discover that when you get into challenging conditions like they faced in the first series outside of Australia, which was in New Zealand, that opening the batting is very difficult," the former batting legend added.

‘Not the right message to send’

Hayden admitted not liking this idea in the first place and adding this doesn’t set a correct example for domestic players either.

"I, personally, as I said at the time, was on record saying that I didn't like changing," Hayden added. "I think it's crazy to think that you have the world's best-in-class batter in a certain position. And then you change to a completely different position. For a few reasons, I think that's crazy. Firstly, why? Such a gun in that position, such a coveted player.

"And then it also is not a great nod to the first-class set-up, which is very much in the Australian culture, been driving great results towards key roles, be that any one of the roles - wicketkeeping, batting, spinners, fast bowlers, opening batters. So the [batting positions of] one, two and three is a category, which needs to be protected, in my opinion. It sets up play."

Lacks security

Hayden didn’t mince his words in admitting how massive a void David Warner’s absence has left and if Smith, in any capacity, could fill it.

"For the first time, it doesn't feel as secure. David Warner gave a great service to Australian cricket. He gave a service that was extremely competitive and wonderfully dynamic.

"He really took that legacy that I'd created through the 2000s to a new level, strike rates in excess of 80 [70] and gave great momentum to the top order, which otherwise is quite a conservative, very good, but very conservative batting line-up. So I think he's an enormous loss in terms of how do you replace him,” Hayden continued.

Rohit Sharma-led Indian Team has a chance to create history and win their first-ever five-match Test series in England. Although India drew (2-2) the last time they toured England for five matches (played across two years due to Covid-19), they have won just one of the past five series in the UK (in 2007, under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy).

However, when England tours India in Tests, the results are almost similar, with India maintaining domination (at home) in the past five home series and England winning just once in 2012.

Meanwhile, the Indian Test Team is at the top of the current World Test Championship (WTC) standings, with a PCT of 68.52. To maintain their first position, they must beat Bangladesh and New Zealand in their upcoming home season, starting September 19 in Chennai.

India’s challenge will be the away five-match Test series Down Under from November 2024 to January 2025. While Australia is in the second spot with 62.50 PCT, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and South Africa are next in line.

The England-India Test series in 2025 will fall under the next WTC cycle.

Indian Women’s Team to also tour England

Not only the men’s team, but the Indian women’s cricket team will also tour England next summer, playing five T20Is and three ODIs.

Besides, Richard Gould, the ECB's chief executive officer, said the Indian women’s team will also play their counterparts in the first-ever women’s Test at the Lord’s in 2026.

Lord’s, Manchester among five venues locked in for India’s tour of England 2025

Former batting great Matthew Hayden feels neither of the two teams – Australia nor India, are outright favourites in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Though his ex-teammate and captain Ricky Ponting predicted the hosts would win the series 3-1 this time, ending their dry run against India in Tests, Hayden says the hosts have let go of the home advantage quite a few times recently.

Hayden’s remarks have come after Australia lost twice at the Gabba in Brisbane in the last few years (first against India in 2021 and then to a lower-ranked West Indies team the last time), a fortress never breached in around 40 years.

Although Australia maintained its domination against all visiting teams all this time, India beat them twice at their home - in 2018 and 2022, besides thrashing them in two away series in the past decade.

Meanwhile, Hayden confirmed that the nature of the pitches in three of the five venues – Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, will have drop-in pitches.

"One is a day-night Test match [in Adelaide] - the second Test match," Hayden said.

"Again, once you get those overhead conditions under that twilight zone, they can be really difficult [to bat on]. I would go as far as to say that the home advantage in Australia has been taken away quite a lot, simply on the basis that if you get the wrong side of a certain session, be that you're 4 for 130, at twilight, you can be 8 for 150.

"So, there's no chance to naturally dominate a game. It's quite even the whole time, so it's a very different type of cricket because you don't have those traditional surfaces,” he continued.

‘He’s a package’ – Hayden on Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise to the top in such a brief period has impressed everyone, and Hayden is no different. Calling Jaiswal ‘a package’, Hayden said he looks forward to watching the Indian opener do well Down Under but cautioned him not to take things lightly against the Aussies.

Hayden, a well-renowned puller of the cricket ball, lauded Jaiswal’s superb stroke play, especially against the spin.

"I think he's a package," Hayden said of Jaiswal. "Yes, his strokeplay is superb. His ability, in particular, to hit on the up through the covers is phenomenal. [But] that'll also have its vulnerabilities. I'm looking forward to seeing how he adjusts on bouncy tracks. We did notice a few times in the IPL that he's a very hard hitter of the ball - [with the] pull shots in particular."

He, however, also put out the warning signs for Jaiswal against the three world-class seamers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

"But that'll be challenged by three world-class speedsters, assuming they're all fit, and on much bigger grounds as well - grounds where it has to almost be the perfect contact for that ball to sail over for six. You can get caught easily, three-quarters of the way in the fence. So they have little adjustments that world-class players like Jaiswal will make for sure,” Hayden added.

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami might miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai. Although he has resumed bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following his ankle surgery, the BCCI decided against accelerating his comeback.

Given India will play five Tests Down Under later this year, the board wants Shami to recover at his pace and return when 100%.

The India fast bowler is said to mark his return with the first Ranji Trophy game for Bengal starting October 11.

Shami was India’s best bowler during the 2023 ODI World Cup – picking 24 wickets in seven contested matches. His performance propelled India to reach another WC Final – the second time at home, but they came short against the eventual winners, Australia, by six wickets.

The right-arm pacer suffered an ankle injury during the ten-team tournament and has been ruled out of competitive cricket since. Although the board named him in the Test squad for the South Africa series later last year, Shami pulled his name out.

Later, he underwent surgery in London in February this year, recovering at the NCA since.

Earlier, several reports claimed that the Indian Cricket Board is hopeful that Shami will attain full fitness in time for the first series of the upcoming home season; that, however, is far from reality as Shami continues to recover from his ankle injury.

The daunting Australian Tour

The BCCI understands the magnitude of this Test series, and to ensure India completes a historic hat-trick of series win Down Under, they need a fully-fit Shami on the board.

If all goes well and Shami fares per expectation during the domestic matches, the board can include him for the second and third Test against the Kiwis.

Per a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI also plans to send Shami with the India-A side to Australia for two four-day fixtures starting October 31 and November 7 to acclimatise and prepare for the marquee Test series.

Meanwhile, the last time India toured Australia, Shami broke his wrist while batting in the first Test in Adelaide, which India lost embarrassingly. They, however, created history by winning the series 2-1 under stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane and without Shami and their then-captain Virat Kohli.

BCCI to rest Mohammed Shami for Bangladesh Tests, Ranji Trophy opener to mark his return - Reports

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) on Monday (Aug 19) released a detailed statement over Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification during the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh, set to compete for the gold medal bout in the women’s 50kg freestyle category was disqualified for being overweight during the second day of the competition. She would consequently finish bottom of the standings despite having guaranteed a silver medal before the disqualification was confirmed on Aug 7.

CAS releases detailed statement

"A consequence of elimination without ranking from the round for which the Athlete was found ineligible, having been eligible for the rounds for which she competed, would seem to be a fairer solution," the CAS order said.

"The problem for the Athlete is that the Rules are clear as to the weight limit and are the same for all participants. There is no tolerance provided for - it is an upper limit. It does not even allow for the weight of the singlet. It is clearly up to an athlete to ensure that they remain below that limit," the order stated.

The CAS slammed Phogat and claimed that it was the athlete’s responsibility to stay in the weight range. The United World Wrestling's (UWW) policies were not before the arbitrator and there was no evidence or submission against such policies.

After her disqualification, Vinesh launched a complaint at the CAS for a joint silver medal, however, after multiple hearings the decision went against the Indian wrestler. Senior lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania were tasked with helping Vinesh challenge the decision at the CAS, but there was no joy for the wrestler. They raised the following points during the appeal to help the Indian wrestler get at least a silver medal.

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins says he and the management rely on the two all-rounders – Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh to play a handy role with the ball as the hosts aim to win back the coveted Border-Gavaskar trophy. With Team India set to tour Australia for five Tests later this year, Cummins wants both all-rounders to ‘get the job done’ this time.

Australia played with the same bowling attack across seven Tests last summer (against Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand), with the quicks enjoying brief outings.

With none of the matches going till the fifth day and only three times Australia bowled over 78 overs in an innings, the star trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cummins didn’t burn out.

Cummins admitted that the upcoming summer (regarding workload) will be different from the previous ones.

"It's been huge [having the all-rounders]," Cummins said.

"In some ways, we haven't had to use them as much as we thought we would. Which is a great thing. The last couple of summers have been pretty light [with] quick Test matches.

"I suspect this summer might be a bit different at the time. We'll be drawing on Cam Green and Mitch Marsh a bit more. Even someone like Cam basically started in Shield cricket as a bowler but hasn't had to bowl heaps in Test matches. Now he is a few years older, I think we will be leaning on him a bit more," the Test captain noted.

Uncertainty over batting order

Although talks are going on about Steve Smith’s batting position since he moved up the order after David Warner’s departure, Cummins confirmed that irrespective of uncertainty around the batting order, Green and Marsh will play the first Test this summer.

"The first point is they both absolutely make the top six on their batting alone, which is a luxury," Cummins said at the launch of Play Cricket Week.

"We're really lucky that Nathan Lyon bowls plenty of overs, so you don't necessarily have to have an all-rounder, but it makes a big difference to have that fifth bowling option. And with someone like Cam and Mitch, we have six bowling options. It's a really nice thing to have. Top six should always make the team on their batting,” Cummins continued.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia rested the ace seamer for the upcoming UK Tour with an eye on managing his workload.

Pat Cummins relies on Green and Marsh to ‘get the job done’ against India in Border-Gavaskar series

West Indies have rested some big names like all-rounders Andre Russell and Jason Holder alongside star seamer Alzarri Joseph for the three-match T20Is against South Africa at home, starting August 24. While opener Brandon King also misses out on the cut, as he continues to recover from the side strain he suffered during the T20 World Cup in June, Shimron Hetmyer, who didn’t play a single game in the tournament, retained his place.

Miles Bascombe, CWI's director of cricket, revealed Russell, 36, requested ‘for a period of rest and recovery’. Russell returned to the West Indies squad for the showpiece event and lately completed his stint with London Spirit in The Hundred.

Russell and Holder will work closely with the CWI science and medicine team, and Joseph - recently appointed the Test vice-captain, will continue to take his time off. West Indies' Test coach Andre Coley also spoke about managing Joseph’s workload in a chat with ESPNcricinfo.

"As far as Alzarri is concerned, it always helps to have a period of time away from the game to work on your individual skills because you could get drawn into moving from one tournament to the next and might actually lose some of your skills.

"So, it's building in the right amount of rest time where he does nothing, but then also have little periods where he is not in competition. That way, he will be able to create more control around his bowling,” the Test coach noted.

Star-studded Team

Meanwhile, Rovman Powell continues to lead the star-studded T20I side, with Shai Hope tipped to open alongside Johnson Charles, while rookie Alick Athanaze is a backup. The biggest plus, however, is to have superstar batters Nicholas Pooran and Hetmyer in the middle order, with Romario Shepherd there to take care of lower-order duties.

Though Shamar Joseph retains his place following a superb show in the Test series, CWC picked four spinners in Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, Chase and returning Fabian Allen.

"Facing a strong South Africa side is an excellent opportunity for our team to reset and refocus with our game plan," Daren Sammy, West Indies' white-ball coach, said in a CWI statement.

"We have played them recently and had mixed results, so this should be an exciting and important series. I'm confident in the squad we've selected, and with eyes already on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know the guys will be keen to show their hunger for success,” he added.

Matt Richardson, three-time Olympic cycling medalist, switches to Great Britain from Australia

Jannik Sinner ended his losing streak against Alexander Zverev with a 7-6 (11/9), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) win on Sunday which took him into the final of the Cincinnati Open.

The world number one had lost four of five previous matches in the series, with his only win coming at Roland Garros four years ago.

The tight victory took more than three hours not including a rain interruption.

The match was paused midway through the first-set tiebreaker for nearly 30 minutes while a shower passed over the area -- another episode of the poor weather which has plagued the event in recent days.

Sinner saved two Zverev set points and won the opener on his own third chance, only to fall in the second set as he lost an early break and was broken again in the 12th game as he sent an overhead into the net.

The third set went into a tiebreaker with Sinner taking a 5-2 lead and triumphing on his second match point.

"It was a tough match, a very exciting match," the Italian said. "We played in different conditions: sunny, rain and then night.

Jannik Sinner ended his losing streak against Alexander Zverev with a 7-6 (11/9), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) win on Sunday which took him into the final of the Cincinnati Open.

Tennis: World no 1 Jannik Sinner tops Alexander Zverev to reach Cincinnati Open final

Pep Guardiola’s decision to give many of Manchester City’s star players more time to recover from Euro 2024 paid dividends on Sunday when their stand-ins helped the defending champions to a 2-0 win at Chelsea under new coach Enzo Maresca.

Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden – stalwarts for England in their run to the Euro final in July – were on the bench at Stamford Bridge and Spain's Rodri was out of the squad altogether as he recovers from an injury picked up in Germany.

In came right-back Rico Lewis and winger Savinho who both tormented Chelsea while Mateo Kovacic, Rodri’s under-study, sealed the win with City’s second goal in the 84th minute after Erling Haaland, fresh from a whole summer off, opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

"We didn't expect it. We are away from our best so three points is the good news. For me it is an honour to be in charge of these guys. I'm so fortunate, I could not say more," Guardiola said when asked about the players who stepped up.

He paid tribute to Kovacic for his role in replacing Rodri whose absences last season coincided with City's three defeats in the league.

"His mum and dad gave (us) an incredible human being, he is a top-class person. Top," Guardiola said.

City are seeking a fifth straight Premier League title having already made history by winning the past four in a row although they face the risk of punishment for alleged breaches of financial rules, claims that the club denies.

Unlike City's decision to rest their Euro stars, Chelsea started with Spain’s Marc Cucurella and England's Cole Palmer who both appeared in the tournament final in Berlin on July 14.

The Blues showed flashes of the style that Chelsea’s big-spending U.S. owners – now on their fourth permanent manager since they bought the club in 2022 - hope will bring success back to west London.

But in the end, Maresca’s side were mostly reduced to unlikely penalty appeals and a fluffed attempt by Nicolas Jackson before Kovacic settled the game.

Palmer – Chelsea's runaway top scorer last season with 22 goals – was largely kept quiet by City’s defence, and new signings Pedro Neto and Marc Guiu failed to pierce the visitors’ back line.

Maresca said he saw progress and pointed to some fine margins in the game, with Haaland's opening goal standing after a narrow offside decision went City's way while Nicolas Jackson was adjudged offside when he scored what would have been an equaliser.

"We competed for large parts of the game," the Italian said. "For some moments, we were even better. We created chances. And I think the big difference today between us and them was especially inside the box and the way they managed the ball in the last part of the game."

PL 2024/25: Pep praises youngsters in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea; Haaland completes 100 games

Kylian Mbappe was left frustrated on his Real Madrid La Liga debut on Sunday as a resilient Real Mallorca held the Spanish and European champions to a 1-1 draw in their title defence opener.

The French superstar was thwarted by Mallorca goalkeeper Dominik Greif and after Rodrygo Goes sent Madrid ahead early on the hosts levelled in the second half through Vedat Muriqi's towering header.

Madrid's star-studded side struggled to break down Mallorca, who came closer to winning the game in the final stages at Son Moix stadium.

Los Blancos defender Ferland Mendy was sent off in stoppage time for a high challenge on Muriqi.

"We went ahead, we had chances to score the second, and then in the second half we lacked balance," Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters. "We conceded counter-attacks, it was not a good game, it was quite a clear game to see that we need to defend better and have better balance on the pitch."

Ancelotti selected the same starting line-up which defeated Atalanta to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, with Jude Bellingham in midfield behind the Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo attacking line.

Mbappe scored in that victory but the former Paris Saint-Germain forward was unable to celebrate his first match in his new homeland with another goal.

Ancelotti was not impressed with his team's work-rate.

"We have to do better, with more attitude," continued the Italian coach. "This game can serve us to learn a lot from, it's a game where it was quite clear where we had a problem.

"Mallorca had a very good game in a defensive sense, better than us."

Mallorca coach Jagoba Arrasate was facing his first match in charge of the Copa del Rey runners-up and could not have asked for a tougher challenge on paper than the reigning champions, bolstered by Mbappe's arrival.

However, his team rose to the challenge and earned a creditable point.

Madrid, who lost just once last season as they marched convincingly to the title, started quickly and took the lead after a slick combination between their Brazilian forwards.

Vinicius rolled the ball backwards for Rodrygo to collect in the area and the winger bent a shot into the far corner, beyond the reach of Greif.

The goalkeeper tipped away another Rodrygo effort and Mbappe sent an effort wide as Madrid stayed on top but could not expand upon their advantage.

Arrasate urged his players to stay in the game until half-time and they duly obliged, shutting down Los Blancos' array of stars.

Kylian Mbappe goalless on La Liga debut as Real Madrid denied win in Mallorca

India captain Rohit Sharma is a true leader in every sense. Despite being the most lethal top-order batsman for most of his career, he has always been the bowlers’ captain, and one example of this was visible during the 2024 T20 World Cup Final. When South Africa needed 30 off five overs, Rohit knew taking wickets would only help his team win from there; so, without bothering to keep Bumrah available for the last over, he finished his quota earlier, which eventually helped India win the title and end the ICC trophy drought.

Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour, who sat on the sidelines watching Rohit pull off a masterstroke, lauded the India captain for being intelligent and sensible in his decision-making.

“He is tactically very good as a captain. In the T20 World Cup final, he finished Bumrah's over early. A lot of people must have questioned that decision, but that decision put us in the situation, where 16 was needed in the last over. His tactical decisions on the field are spot on.

“Sitting outside It surprises you as a coach as well. We from outside sometimes think what he is doing, but then you realise what he has done after a while," Rathour said on the podcast 'Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli'.

‘Rohit understands his game’

Rohit was the right successor to Virat Kohli as the India captain, and ever since he donned that hat, Rohit has not failed to deliver.

Although India came close to winning its maiden World Test Championship Final last year and the home ODI World Cup, he got the job done in the shortest format, helping India lift their second T20 World Cup title.

"His first quality is that as a batsman, he is a phenomenal player. I think he is someone who understands his game really well. He always has a clear game plan. Even as a leader, you will have to lead from the front. You have to perform to set the example. And since he has become the captain, he has always led by example," Rathour continued.

During the England series earlier this year, five players - Rajat Patidar, Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan and Akash Deep made their international debuts under Rohit’s captaincy. Everyone praised Rohit for his leadership skills on the ground and how he made them comfortable outside of it,.

Speaking on the same lines, Rathour said, "He is a player's captain. He is invested with the players heavily. I have never seen a captain, who is so invested in team meetings and strategies. He spends a lot of time on the team's strategy. He is part of the bowlers' meeting, batters' meeting. He wants to sit with the bowlers and batters to try and understand what they are thinking. He invests a lot of time with the players,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Rohit will next be seen during the two-match home series against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai.

Pakistan will be without seamer Aamer Jamal and spinner Abrar Ahmed for the first Test against Bangladesh starting August 21 in Rawalpindi. A day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the venue for the second Test shifted from Karachi to Rawalpindi, the news of management releasing Jamal due to fitness concerns broke out.

Jamal suffered a back injury while playing in the English County earlier this year and was picked only for this home Test series subject to fitness clearance. Though the team management expected him to regain fitness by now, Jamal failed to do so, returning to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore to continue his rehabilitation.

Earlier, the team management released spinner Abrar Ahmed and top-order batter Kamran Ghulam over the weekend.

Pakistan bowlers Aamer Jamal and Abrar Ahmed to miss first Test against Bangladesh

Brooks Koepka beat Jon Rahm in a playoff to win the LIV Golf Greenbrier title on Sunday for his record fifth career crown on the Saudi-backed series. Five-time major champion Koepka, made par on the first playoff hole while Rahm made bogey.

Koepka, whose most recent LIV win came in May at Singapore, said it was his most prized because of his day-long fight with playing partner Rahm. "This is probably my favorite one," Koepka said. "It's always good when you have to battle good players. "Jon is a hell of a player. For whatever reason, he has always gotten the better of me a little bit as of late. It feels nice just to get one."

Rahm outdueled Koepka in the final round to win the 2023 Masters for his second major title but Koepka said that didn't add motivation. "I wasn't thinking about it," he said. "Just one of those things. Let's go play golf. It's a good win."

Koepka fired a seven-under par 63 in the final round while Rahm shot 65 to leave both on 19-under 191 after 54 holes at the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. American Jason Kokrak was third on 18-under with England's 51-year-old Richard Bland and Australian Marc Leishman sharing fourth on 17-under.

In the playoff, Rahm's tee shot at the par-3 18th went to the back edge of a bunker. One leg in and the other out of the sand, the Spaniard blasted 20 feet beyond the hole.

Koepka missed his birdie putt but tapped in for par, then Rahm lipped out on his par putt and Koepka had the victory. Koepka's earlier LIV titles came at Jeddah in 2022 and 2023, Orlando in 2023 and Singapore.

Koepka collected major wins at the 2017 and 2018 US Opens and the 2018, 2019 and 2023 PGA Championships.

Rahm, who also won the 2021 US Open, jumped from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf last December and won his first LIV event last month, taking LIV Golf UK at Centurion in England. The 29-year-old Spaniard shared fifth at the Paris Olympics earlier this month. Despite the defeat, Rahm remained second to Chile's Joaquin Niemann in the season standings, with the campaign title to be decided at next month's regular-season finale at Chicago.

Rahm sank a five-foot par putt at the 10th hole to match Koepka for the lead at 16-under and launch the back-nine battle. Bland followed three birdies in a row with an eagle at the par-5 12th to swipe the lead at 17-under.

Koepka made a tap-in birdie at 12 to match Bland then curled in a 15-foot birdie putt on 13 to seize the lead at 18-under, Rahm making birdie at 13 as well to stay one adrift.

- Rahm rallies late -

When Koepka curled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the 14th, he doubled his edge to two strokes. But Rahm birdied 16 and the par-5 17th to grab a share of the lead with Koepka, whose birdie putt at 17 lipped out, and both parred 18 to force the playoff.

Rahm, who fired a 62 on Saturday, opened Sunday with a birdie to reach 15-under and lead by two. Koepka birdied two of his first three holes to pull within a stroke and both birdied the fourth. Rahm made a bogey at six and Koepka first took the lead with a birdie at seven.

Koepka's Smash, with Kokrak in the lineup, won the team competition on 53-under, defeating Leishman and the all-Australian Ripper squad by three strokes.

- Rahm rallies late - When Koepka curled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the 14th, he doubled his edge to two strokes.

South African Dricus du Plessis defended his UFC middleweight title on Sunday after a fourth-round submission win over bitter rival Israel Adesanya in a blockbuster bout at Perth Arena.

In the main event of UFC 305, du Plessis appeared to be flagging against the two-time former champion before a spectacular takedown of Adesanya solidified his 185-pound belt.

Du Plessis (22-2) has now won 10 fights in a row, having originally claimed the belt after beating polarising Sean Strickland in January.

"I came in here to die for this belt," du Plessis said. "I came here to take it home. Here I am, still the champion."

At a sold-out 15,000 Perth Arena, Adesanya (24-4) enjoyed significant crowd support and seemed to have an edge for much of the fight until he was helpless against du Plessis' rear-naked choke.

"I'm disappointed, but at the same time I'm proud because this is the best I've felt and looked," said the Nigeria-born New Zealander, who made his return after a shock defeat to Strickland in September last year.

"I just had the better man on the night and I'll give him respect for that."

It was a measured start amid a febrile atmosphere with the taller Adesanya, a former kickboxer, using his longer reach to fend off the aggression of du Plessis.

Adesanya aimed to counterstrike and he utilised his favoured kicks to deadly effect, as du Plessis emerged bloodied on his forehead.

Du Plessis unleashed a powerful left-handed punch late in the first round and his momentum continued in the next when he landed a big takedown and had control on Adesanya's back.

But he could not lock in a submission as Adesanya worked his way back into the fight with grappling.

Adesanya's strategy of wearing down du Plessis appeared to take effect by the fourth round as he landed cleaner punches.

But du Plessis mustered energy and a rattling blow wobbled Adesanya as the South African soon emerged triumphant.

Also on the main card, Kai Kara-France stunned the partisan crowd by pummelling Australian Steve Erceg in a first round-knockout in the flyweight.

The New Zealander was in an aggressive mood and twice dropped a hapless Erceg with a flurry of powerful punches.

"I knew Steve was going to be crafty and smart, so I had to set it up... and be smart and that's when I went for the finish," said the 31-year-old Kara-France.

India wrestler Vinesh Phogat said that she'd like a girl from her village to break her Olympic record set in recently-concluded Paris Games 2024. Phogat, who created history by becoming first women wrestler from India to enter a wrestling event final, was disqualified on the morning (Aug 7) of the bout in Paris.

She was found 100 grams over the permissible limit and was not allowed to participate in the 50kg freestyle gold medal bout. She, however, received the 'gold medal' from community leaders in her native village upon her arrival on Saturday (Aug 17).

"Whatever I have learnt in wrestling, I don't know if that is god-gifted or my hard work but whatever I have I would like to share with my sisters from this village and I wish they achieve greater heights than me," said Vinesh as reported by news agency PTI.

"I can then say with pride that she is from my village and I have trained her. I want that (my) records are broken by wrestlers from this village. Thank you all for staying up so late in the night for me.

"It would be disappointing if no wrestler emerged from this village. We have paved the way, given hope with our achievements. I request you all to support the women in this village. They need your support, hope and trust if they have to replace us in future.

"They can achieve a lot. All they need is your support. I will always be indebted to this nation, this village for giving me so much love and respect," added the wrestler.

Vinesh had appealed in Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) against her disqualification but her case was dismissed by the sports body on August 14.

She, nonetheless, received a hero's welcome upon her return to the country.

World number ones Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek both turned around losing situations on Saturday to move into the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open.

Sinner prevented rival Andrey Rublev from repeating a triumph from last Saturday in Montreal as he defeated the sixth seed in a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 fightback. Swiatek did the same in the women's draw as she worked to overcome teen Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Sinner will square off in the semis against third-ranked 2021 champion Alexander Zverev, who got past rain interruptions in the final set to defeat Ben Shelton 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5.

The third set was start-stop but the German advanced to his third consecutive Cincinnati final-four spot.

"Conditions and the interruptions were tough, but Ben was the toughest part of the match," Zverev said. "He has played amazing tennis all week. It was tough to find my comfort zone today, but it's great to get the win."

In the bottom of the draw, Fances Tiafoe will play Holger Rune.

The American advanced 6-3 after half an hour when fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz who underwent knee surgery a month ago, had to retire with a calf injury.

"At 2-2 I felt he was a little off," said Tiafoe, who claimed his 200th Tour match win. "I know how it feels dealing with pain, rehab... he did come back pretty quick."

Rune, who had never won a match here until this week beat Briton Jack Draper 6-4, 6-2 in 75 minutes.

Rune broke twice in the second set to take the win in 75 minutes.

"The scoreboard was not how the match felt," Rune said. "It was very difficult, Jack was going after it," he said.

Top seed Sinner took to the court for only his second match of the week after a first-round bye and a walkover on Friday.

Sinner -- whose fitness has been compromised in recent months by a hip niggle, illness and the tonsillitis which forced him to miss the Olympics -- stormed back to win the second set and break Rublev to start the third.

He clinched victory in a set where five of the 10 games were breaks of serve. His match point ball was caught by a gust of wind and put out of the reach of his opponent.

"There was a lot of mental strength required today," Sinner said. "It was tough conditions, very, very windy," he said.

Sinner ended with 31 winners, including 10 aces, while Rublev, the runner-up at Montreal, committed 47 unforced errors.

Poland's Swiatek grabbed a break in the penultimate game of a match lasting more than two and a half hours to finally advance past Andreeva at the US Open tuneup, which concludes on Monday.

Swiatek moved through on her first match point, her opponent driving a return long, and won a 30th match this season at the WTA 1000 level. She stands 53-6 for the season and has won 25 matches on hardcourt.

Robert Lewandowski struck twice for Hansi Flick's Barcelona to deliver a battling 2-1 win at Valencia in their La Liga opener on Saturday.

The German coach celebrated his first competitive match at the helm with three points as Barca came from behind against Ruben Baraja's solid Valencia side.

Hugo Duro sent the hosts ahead after 44 minutes but veteran Polish striker Lewandowski levelled from close range before the break and netted a penalty early in the second half.

With champions Real Madrid, led by new superstar Kylian Mbappe, in action on Sunday at Real Mallorca, Barcelona started their bid to steal the crown with an impressive result at Valencia's rowdy Mestalla stadium.

Barca were without key players, including Frenkie de Jong, Gavi and Ronald Araujo and Flick selected three 17-year-olds in his starting line-up.

They were Spain's Euro 2024 star Lamine Yamal, whose father was stabbed earlier this week in a violent attack, Pau Cubarsi and midfielder Marc Bernal, the latter making his debut.

"In the second half I think we played much better and with three or four very young players -- I think this match is very important, to win at the beginning of the season, especially at this stadium in Valencia, it's very difficult," Lewandowski told Movistar.

"My aim is always to score goals, I don't know how many goals by the end of the season, but it is very important for me that as today was the first game, (I got) goals for confidence."

Barcelona's summer signing Dani Olmo is not yet registered to play and Flick said the playmaker still needs to get up to speed in terms of fitness.

The coach was happier with his team's second-half display than their performance before the break.

"The second half was much better than the first half (where) we made a lot of mistakes," Flick told Movistar. "We came back at the end of the first half and in the second half, we did much better."

An even first half burst into life as the break beckoned after the teams managed to create few clear chances in the first 40 minutes.

Duro nodded the best of them over the bar from a corner, while Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a fierce Raphinha drive.

Valencia took the lead in the 44th minute, with Duro nodding home Diego Lopez's cross after losing Inigo Martinez, who played him onside.

La Liga: Robert Lewandowski’s brace earns new manager Hansi Flick his first Barcelona win

Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen beat Stuttgart 4-3 on penalties in the season-opening German Super Cup on Saturday, winning the trophy for the first time. Victor Boniface's 11th-minute goal was cancelled out four minutes later when Stuttgart's Enzo Millot levelled.

Leverkusen were then reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time when Martin Terrier saw red for a dangerous tackle.

Deniz Undav gave Stuttgart the lead in the second half but Patrik Schick scored with two minutes remaining to equalise for Leverkusen and send the match to penalties.

Bayern Munich loanee Frans Kraetzig and Silas Mvumpa missed from the spot while Leverkusen converted all of their penalties.

"What we did in the last 10 or 15 minutes, with a man down, to score the equaliser -- it was unbelievable," Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said after the match, praising his side's "huge spirit".

"I'm happy with the way we kicked off the season -- we've got this spirit back".

The season curtain-raiser, which puts the Bundesliga champions up against the Cup winners or league runners-up, was the first not to feature either Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund since 1993.

Stuttgart's stunning effort last season, where the club went from a narrow relegation escape to second place ahead of Bayern, preceded a summer of upheaval as several star players left.

"Before the game, we didn't really know where we stand this season," Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness told reporters after the game.

"So for us it was a clear sign that we're again going in the right direction."

Unbeaten winners of the Bundesliga and German Cup double last campaign, Leverkusen had managed to avoid any major departures and started stronger on Saturday.

Boniface tapped in a goal-bound header from Edmond Tapsoba after 11 minutes.

The visitors levelled just four minutes later, French Olympic silver medallist Millot cutting a pass from Chris Fuehrich through a crowded penalty area and into the bottom right corner.

The sides traded chances before off-season addition Terrier dug his studs into Ermedin Demirovic's ankle and was swiftly sent from the pitch.

Coach Xabi Alonso hooked Boniface for Germany defender Jonathan Tah almost immediately but Stuttgart dominated before half-time, Millot and Pascal Stenzel both going inches away from scoring a second.

Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness brought on Undav and Kraetzig from the bench and the duo combined to give the visitors the lead one minute later when the former Brighton striker tapped in on the counter.

Known for turning matches with late goals last season, Leverkusen again broke through in the dying stages, Alex Grimaldo finding Schick who powered the ball home with just two minutes remaining.

The match went straight to penalties without extra time and Leverkusen -- who have not lost a match domestically since May 2023 -- were faultless.

The Australia pacer just completed his stint in the USA's Major League Cricket (MLC), with Cricket Australia (CA) handing him extended rest for the next two months to manage his workload.

"Everyone that comes back after a break is a little bit fresher; you never regret it," Cummins said during a chat with Fox Sports.

"I've basically been bowling non-stop since the World Test Championship final, nearly 18 months ago. This gives me a good seven or eight weeks completely off bowling so the body can recover, then you start building up again for the summer. "It means you can hopefully bowl for a little bit longer, maintaining pace is a bit easier, makes you less susceptible to injuries," he added.

Over the past year, Cummins has been part of multiple away bilateral tours, twin home Test series against Pakistan and West Indies and three ICC tournaments – WTC Final 2023 (England), ODI World Cup 2023 (India) and T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean; not to forget the away Ashes last year.

Though he has been on the winning side most times, Cummins admits feeling soreness in his body.

"I'm very sore today after a week of the gym. Hamstrings, even ankles, kind of build up over months of bowling, but you can't really nail it while you're in the midst of the season," Cummins noted. "I'll be doing lots of gym, some running, a lot of rehab exercise that you just can't really fit in the middle of the season."

Cummins on Border-Gavaskar series

Looking forward to the India Tests, Cummins said it (BGT) is one trophy he and most of his current teammates haven’t won, something he wishes to tick off.

"It's the trophy I haven't won before... this is the one trophy a lot of our group haven't ticked off," Cummins said.

"We've achieved some amazing things over the last few years as a Test group. You kind of back yourself to win every series at home. I think you need to try and be up there in the upper echelon of teams. "That's what lies ahead of us this summer. They (India) are a really good side. We play them quite a lot, we know them really well, but we feel like we're really well placed also," he added.

Australia last won the BGT almost ten years ago, in 2014/15, when they beat India 2-0 at home. Since then, they have lost twice at home, in addition to suffering beatings in India.

Pat Cummins has won mostly everything since becoming the Australian Test captain, but one eluded from his decorated trophy cabinet is a Border-Gavaskar series. With Team India travelling Down Under for five Tests later this year, Cummins has his eyes set on beating them.

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins outlines plan for home Tests against India - ‘We are well placed this time’

Ace spinner Nathan Lyon admits Australia has ‘ten years of unfinished business’ to deal with against the superstar-studded Indian Test Team. Australia last won the Border-Gavaskar trophy at home in 2014/15, when they beat India 2-0; however, since then, they have failed to put their hands on the trophy, having lost at home twice, in addition to facing hammering on a couple of away tours.

Admitting that the touring Indian Test side is perhaps the best in world cricket, Lyon said he is as hungry as ever to let the monkey off his back and win a Test series against them this time.

India will tour Australia for five Tests starting in late November.

"It's been ten years of unfinished business; it's been a long time, and I know we're extremely hungry to turn things around, especially here at home," Lyon said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"Don't get me wrong, India is an absolute superstar side, and extremely challenging, but I'm extremely hungry to turn things around and make sure we get that trophy back.

"Feel like we are a different team to a couple of years ago, we are on a journey of becoming a great Australian cricket team. We're definitely not there, but we are along that journey and have been playing some decent cricket,” he continued.

Lyon lauds Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brief run at the top in Tests has left Lyon stunned by his cricketing abilities, and despite him picking 530 Test wickets, the traditional off-spinner knows the challenge while going against the emerging superstar.

Lyon also admitted speaking to England spinner Tom Hartley, whom he shared the dressing room with during their latest stints with Lancashire in the County Championship, about how he planned bowling against this daunting Indian Test side during the away series early this year.

"I haven't come across him [Jaiswal] yet, but that will be a massive challenge for all us bowlers," Lyon said.

"The way he played against England, I watched that quite closely and thought that was quite amazing. I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways he went about it to different guys, which I found quite interesting."

"I love talking about cricket, so if I can talk to someone who has played Test cricket, I might be able to pick up something I'm not aware of. There's so much knowledge floating around this game that we can always tap into," he continued.

U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025: India placed with hosts Malaysia in Group A, Pakistan in Group B

The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host the one-off Test between the game’s oldest rivals, Australia and England, in March 2027 to celebrate this format’s 150th anniversary, Cricket Australia announced in a statement on Sunday (August 18).

MCG and Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) are locked in to host the Boxing Day and New Year’s Test, respectively, till 2031, while Adelaide Oval will host the pre-Christmas Test in either day and night or day format for the next seven years.

A standalone celebratory match at MCG will honour the inaugural Test played at this venue from March 15-19 in 1877.

"The 150th anniversary Test match at the MCG in March 2027 will be a wonderful celebration of the pinnacle format of the game at one of the world's great sporting arenas, and we can't wait to host England on that occasion,” Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Nick Hockley said.

Meanwhile, this one-off match will replicate the Centenary Test held in 1977 (from 12-17 March) to mark 100 years of Test cricket, which Australia won by 45 runs. Veterans Rod Marsh and Derek Randall hit hundreds, while Dennis Lillee picked 11 wickets in that match.

Besides, in conjunction with respective state and territory governments, CA finalised the venues for home fixtures till 2031.

The newly-built Optus Stadium in Perth will play the kick-off of the home fixtures for the next three seasons.

"We are delighted to confirm long-term hosting rights, which provide certainty around the locations of some fantastic cricket over the next seven years.”

"We are confident this schedule ensures the best cricket will be played in the best venues at the right times across the country, including a fantastic mix of iconic Test matches, new blockbusters such as the West Test and Christmas Test and exciting day-night fixtures,” Hockley continued.

Gabba loses spot

This decision means the iconic Gabba in Brisbane, which hosted the season’s curtain-raiser for over four decades, will not host the opener from now. While Perth will host the 2025-26 men’s Ashes first Test, Gabba is guaranteed a pre-Christmas day-night Ashes Test besides being scheduled to host a Test match against India later this summer.

Given Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Olympics, the Gabba will be redeveloped, meaning it will not host a Test match for a considerable period after the next men’s Ashes Test there.

"In Brisbane, it is harder [to plan] because of the infrastructure," Baird, CA chairman said.

"There is just uncertainty, so we're not sure of the long-term solution. What we do know is the Gabba has a use for life that ends in 2030. We need a solution and are working with the AFL as well on a long-term solution.

"We want a great venue in Brisbane that can support Queensland Cricket and Australian cricket for years to come,” he continued.

MCG locked in to host Australia-England one-off Test to celebrate format’s 150th anniversary in March 2027

Carlos Alcaraz let loose his frustrations with a violent racquet smash in a 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 defeat on Friday at the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open that he called the "worst match" of his career.

The reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion could not match the wily skills of 37-year-old French opponent Gael Monfils, two decades in the game and a threat to any young gun.

"It was the worst match that I ever played in my career," Alcaraz said. "I couldn't play.

"I don't know what happened. Honestly, I couldn't, I couldn't control myself. I couldn't be better. It was impossible to win, and that's all."

The Spaniard added: "I came here thinking I'm going to feel good. I'm going to put in a good tennis, because I know how to play on this court."

Alcaraz said he had never before broken a racquet in anger but this match was the exception.

The ATP number three and 2023 Cincinnati runner-up heads to the US Open starting a week from Monday without a hardcourt win and only one second-round summer cement match in his legs.

"It's really difficult to find some goodstuffs from this match -- I want to forget it and try to move on to New York," he said. "I'll try to practice well, to get used to those courts. And I will forget this match."

Monfils then started a third-round catch-up match only hours after his victory, but ran out of puff as Holger Rune scraped out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory.

While frustrated second seed Alcaraz was fuming at his form and occasionally screaming at his team, world number one Jannik Sinner celebrated a quiet 23rd birthday, with fate handing him a present in the form of a walkover.

The Italian advanced effortlessly into the quarters when Australian opponent Jordan Thompson withdrew before their match with a rib injury.

Sinner next gets a rematch of last week's quarter-final in Canada, which he lost to Andrey Rublev. The Russian finished a rain-delayed match over Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.

Third seed Alexander Zverev advanced into the last eight over Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5, 7-6 (8/6).

Number five Hubert Hurkacz continued his quick return from July knee surgery with a 6-3,3-6, 6-1 defeat of Italy's Flavio Cobolli.

The poor run of form for seventh seed Casper Ruud continued as the Norwegian went down 6-3, 6-1 to Felix Auger-Aliassime in 68 minutes, with the Canadian sending down 14 aces.

No.1 Swiatek cruises

Women's top seed Iga Swiatek defeated Marta Kostyuk for the second time this season, powering into the quarter-finals 6-2, 6-2.

The Pole backed up her win over the Ukrainian at Indian Wells last March and now stands 3-0 in the rivalry without the loss of a set.

Due to the morning of rain, Swiatek stepped onto the court without her usual pre-match routine, but showed no ill effects.

Top-ranked Swiatek was able to finish off victory efficiently after struggling through three sets in the previous round to defeat Varvara Gracheva.

Swiatek secured the opening set in 31 minutes and was untroubled as she rolled through the second.

"I'm happy that I kept my intensity, in the first match, it got a little bit down," Swiatek said. "But I was ready in every game. "I'm happy I was solid. I was disciplined with all the things that I wanted to take care of."

Three-time semi-finalist and third seed Aryna Sabalenka beat Monfils's wife, Elina Svitolina, 7-5, 6-2 for her fourth quarter-final here.

Sixth seed Jessica Pegula won a delayed second-round match over 2023 runner-up Karolina Muchova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Pegula's second win of the day was a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over US compatriot Taylor Townsend to book a quarter-final against former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.

Mother-of-two Caroline Wozniacki continued her WTA comeback effort but lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-4.

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen beat Poland's Magdalena Frech 6-1, 7-5. Teenaged Mirra Andreeva put out Italy's Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
