She described Kounta's messages and posts targeting Israel in particular "as shocking as they are unacceptable".&nbsp;

The messages have since been deleted.&nbsp;

After deactivating his X account, Kounta reactivated it to post an apology where he introduced himself as "French, Muslim and proud".

"People had fun digging through my tweets and taking some of my comments out of context, portraying me as anti-white, anti-France, anti-Semitic, and so on," said the 29-year-old who ran in the men's and mixed 4x400m relays at the 2024 Olympics.

"I sincerely apologise if anyone felt offended. I am against genocides and any form of racism or injustice, and I don't think I need to prove how much I love my country," he said.

Contacted by AFP, the FFA did not comment specifically on the Kounta case but on "statements by several athletes from the French team on the occasion of the Olympic Games", also in reference to messages of a homophobic nature published 10 years ago by middle-distance runner Hugo Hay, who also participated in the Paris Games.

"The federation reminds all athletes of the French team that the expression of their personal opinions must in no way jeopardise the unity of French athletics and the French team, and must respect republican values," the FFA said.

"It condemns the fact that athletes take the Olympic celebration as an opportunity to expose their personal ideas, some of which constitute an offence," it continued.

"This is why the president of the federation has systematically contacted the competent authorities, in order to shed light on all of these facts, and will continue to do so in the future."

"In light of the order of the CAS, the IOA continues to stand in full support of Ms. Phogat and is exploring further legal options. The IOA is committed to ensuring that Vinesh's case is heard. It will continue to advocate justice and fairness in sports, ensuring that the rights and dignity of athletes and everyone in the sports fold are upheld at all times," it further read.

India’s legendary hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh will receive a big honour from Hockey India after the federation announced its decision to retire jersey no. 16 on Wednesday (Aug 14). Sreejesh, who helped India win back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympic Games in hockey, recently announced his retirement from the sport. Hockey India proposed the initiative of retiring the no. 16 jersey to honour the contribution and achievements of Sreejesh&nbsp;who served the Indian hockey team for almost two decades.

<h2>Sreejesh jersey no. 16 to retire</h2>

"Sreejesh will groom the next Sreejesh in the junior team, who will wear the No. 16 jersey," Hockey India’s Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh remarked during a ceremony honouring the veteran goalkeeper.

The Indian goalie had announced before the Paris Olympics that he would retire from professional hockey after the tournament. Having debuted in 2006 for the national side, Sreejesh was pivotal in India’s run at the Tokyo Olympics which ended the nation’s 41-year wait for a medal in hockey. He again played a crucial role in India’s campaign at the Olympics in Paris producing a Player of the Match performance against Great Britain in the quarterfinal.

The 36-year-old&nbsp;made crucial saves in open play before making valuable saves in the penalty shootout to help India reach the semifinal. Having donned the no.&nbsp;16 jersey during most&nbsp;of his career, his jersey will no longer be available for any senior player.

16 jersey to honour the contribution and achievements of Sreejesh who served the Indian hockey team for almost two decades. Sreejesh jersey no. 16 to retire "Sreejesh will groom the next Sreejesh in the junior team, who will wear the No. 16 jersey," Hockey India’s Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh remarked during a ceremony honouring the veteran goalkeeper. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Sanjay Singh has blamed the wrestler's protest as a key reason for India’s below-par performance at the Paris Olympics 2024. The head of the WFI was speaking on Wednesday (Aug 14) in the national capital as he blamed the wrestlers for hampering their chances in preparations for the quadrennial event. India won a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics in wrestling and could have added one more medal to the cabinet had star wrestler Vinesh Phogat not been disqualified in the 50kg women’s freestyle event.

<h2>WFI chief blames wrestlers</h2>

"If you look at it from the other angle, the protests that took place for 14-15 months, the entire wrestling fraternity was disturbed. Let alone one category, the wrestlers in other categories struggled as they could not practice without national and international tournaments. Hence, the wrestlers could not perform well,” Sanjay Singh said at an event in Delhi.

India sent six wrestlers to the Paris Olympics with five competing in the women’s category while Aman Sehrawat was the sole representative in the men’s category. Aman won bronze in the 57kg men’s freestyle category but there were no medals for the women’s contingent.

According to Sanjay Singh, India could have done better had they not concentrated on the wrestler's protest, which made the headlines in the build-up to the Olympics. For the entire 2023, wrestlers were seen protesting against then-WFI chief and Member of Parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The WFI was banned by the United World Wrestling (UWW) which saw wrestlers get depleted of preparations and participation from several events during the majority of the year.

Despite all the chaos surrounding the WFI, India could yet clinch two medals at the Paris Games which concluded on Sunday. While Aman had already won the bronze, Vinesh, who was disqualified, filed a petition for a silver medal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). If she is successful in her appeal India will bag two medals in wrestling from the Paris Games.

On the flip side, Aman’s medal on Friday also meant that India has won at least one medal in wrestling for the fifth consecutive Olympics having started the tradition in the Beijing Games in 2008.

The Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) has delayed the verdict for Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat&nbsp;in response to her disqualification appeal from 50kg freestyle gold medal bout at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics 2024 till August 16 at 9:30 pm India time.

Phogat was disqualified after being found overweight by 100 grams on the morning of the final bout on August 7. This is the third time that CAS has deferred its decision in the case.

Phogat appealed against her disqualification a day after the incident on August 8. Earlier, CAS had announced the date of the verdict as August 9 before deferring it to August 13.

Indian Olympic contingent's chief physician Dinshaw Pardiwala informed on August 7&nbsp;that the support staff did all they could to bring the weight down but unfortunately failed. She was later hospitalised at a local polyclinic as a precaution on the same day.

Phogat was discharged a day later&nbsp;from the hospital after recuperating from dehydration for trying to lose weight ahead of the final.

The entire Indian sports fraternity was in disbelief as soon as the news broke&nbsp;but Phogat, while speaking to coaches, called it 'part of the game,' reported news agency PTI.

IOC chief PT Usha, meanwhile, has thrown&nbsp;Vinesh under the bus in response to criticism directed towards the IOA medical team, saying in combat sports&nbsp;the athletes are responsible for their weight management.

"The responsibility of weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team. The hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation," Usha said in a statement.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict: Wrestler's appeal for Olympic medal deferred till August 16

British shooter Amber Rutter said Tuesday she was owed an apology from the sport's global governing body after she missed out on an Olympic gold medal in controversial circumstances.

Rutter had to settle instead for silver in the women's skeet final on August 4 at the Paris Games after she was ruled to have missed a shot, even though television replays appeared to show she had clipped the target.

Both Rutter and her coach made a protest at the time, but this fell on deaf ears.

Rutter and Chile's Francisca Crovetto Chadid were tied after three rounds of the four-round shoot-off.

The 26-year-old Rutter has now repeated her call for a "fair playing field" in her sport, either as a result of better judging or the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, which is used in other shooting competitions overseen by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

After Rutter questioned the referees' call, Crovetto Chadid struck with both her next shots to clinch gold.

Rutter wrote on Instagram on Tuesday she did not want to get "sucked into the negativity of what could have been" but said she felt compelled to speak out to help "spark change" in her sport.

"Every athlete, especially at the Games, deserves to compete on a fair playing field," she said. "Whether that be through experienced and exceptional judging, or new technologies such as VAR which we have always had in place previously at ISSF competitions.

"At this point in time, I can't imagine a huge amount will be done, and that is not what I am looking for.

"However, I do believe some accountability needs to be taken to acknowledge and an apology for the incorrect decision ultimately costing me an opportunity of winning an Olympic gold medal. And furthermore a plan to prevent something like this happening in the future."

“I might be in a bit of denial because I’m well aware I won’t play for England again, but I’ve still not made a decision on my actual cricket career,” Anderson told The Press Association.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed ex-badminton player Prakash Padukone's comments criticising Lakshya Sen for failing to win an Olympic medal at the Paris Games. Lakshya finished fourth in the men's individual round after losing to Victor Axelsen in semis and Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match.

"Making excuses is where our country will win gold medals every single time, so the debate around his assessment was more about that than looking without tinted glasses at what he said," Gavaskar wrote in his column for sports magazine Sportstar.

It is to be noted that Lakshya's mentor Padukone had called out the badminton player saying: “Had he lost comfortably, it would have been a different issue. But to have come this far, to have taken the lead…I know he is young, but he cannot give this as an excuse. Take the responsibility and work harder.”

Gavaskar backed Padukone's statements and wrote: "He said that the players today get all the backing and facilities from their Federations and the government too. Therefore, they should take responsibility for their performances too. It was a point well-made and well-articulated too, without pointing fingers at anybody."

"Yet as it invariably happens in our country, which again is a champion at reading between so-called lines and imagining unintended poisoned arrows, we were quick to jump on him and denounce his comments rather than take the time to digest them and then come out with our comparatively uninformed views."

Lakshya, on the other hand, has vowed to come out stronger and win a medal in the next Olympics, scheduled in 2028 in Los Angeles, USA.

"I am determined to reflect on what went wrong and where I need to improve. I sincerely request space and privacy at this time to regroup, come back stronger, and win laurels for India," wrote the history-maker Indian badminton player.

The United Kingdom’s star diver and Olympic flagbearer, Tom Daley, is used to the weight of public opinion. The world remembers a 10-year-old Daley diving gracefully into the pool at the British national junior platform title in 2004, one that he swiftly won. Thus began his long, winding journey to Olympic glory.

One of the world’s most celebrated divers, Daley has one Olympic gold, silver, and three bronze medals to his name apart from being the poster boy of British diving. He once had an 80-foot-tall banner put up at a Cardiff departmental store.&nbsp;

On 12 August 2024, Daley announced retirement, letting the curtains fall on a glorious career in which he saw some highs and lows, even more dramatic than his awe-inspiring dives.&nbsp;

"I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It's the right time to call it a day," Daley reportedly said in an interview with British Vogue.&nbsp;

<h2>Early mornings at the pool</h2>

A young spiky-haired boy diving and then floating back up is a sight that is familiar to people across the globe.

Daley participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished seventh in the individual 10 m platform competition.

At the 2012 Olympics, he won the hearts of Britain and the world by winning an individual bronze medal.&nbsp;

The British sensation finally won the coveted Olympic gold alongside Matty Lee in the men’s 10 M synchronised competition at Tokyo 2020.&nbsp;

A five-minute, twenty-six-second YouTube video clip posted at 10:59 AM, eleven years ago, shows a young Daley looking directly into the camera while resting on a Union Jack-printed cushion.

“I’m dating a guy, and I couldn’t be happier,” says a confident Daley, speaking publicly about his queerness for the first time.&nbsp;

“I feel like now I'm ready and I wanted to do it, and people think, What will your dad say or your dad would have said? I mean, he always said to me, As long as you're happy, I'm happy,” says Daley, while knowingly breaking LGBTQIA+ stereotypes with an uncanny innocence.&nbsp;

The video now has 13,122,502 views, and with the legend’s retirement, the count will only go up.&nbsp;

<h2>Knitting his way to glory&nbsp;</h2>

With deft fingers and intense concentration, Tom Daley was frequent&nbsp;on the stands at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the image of him sitting alone, due to Covid protocols, steadily knitting a scarf went viral. It prompted discussions about the gender binary and led to gender roles being broken across the world.

Hordes of Twitter users rose up against the diver with queerphobic hate. But many also came out in his support, saying that he was breaking boundaries and easing the pressure off young men across the world.

If an Olympic gold medalist can knit and openly wear bright colours, why can’t a young Indian living in New Delhi?&nbsp;

Daley frequently travels the world but also supports queer rights in countries that criminalise it.

At the onset of the Paris Olympic Games, Daley posted a cheekily captioned “Six boys, 5 rings” picture of him surrounded by other decorated divers. The tongue-in-cheek picture was just the latest in the long list of double-meaning yet inspiring pictures that Daley regularly posts from the world’s greatest sporting events.&nbsp;

Daley’s social media provides an insider’s look into the life of an Olympian and frequently features dispatches from his travels across the world.&nbsp;

His life with husband Dustin Lance Black and kids Robbie and Phoenix attracts likes and comments from millions across the world.

People now have an overt example of how queerness and sporting glory intersect.

<h2>Breaking boundaries in a divided world</h2>

Daley’s unique personality, coupled with the echelons of sporting glory, makes the diver increasingly relevant in a world that hates Olympic gold medallists Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting for their gender.&nbsp;

The world today not only requires out and proud queer people but also out-and-proud sportspersons.&nbsp;

<h2>Daley's legacy</h2>

Daley is leaving behind a career that will not only inspire millions of young divers but give countless young queers across the world the courage to come out and demand not sympathy but equity.&nbsp;

The splash that the 30-year-old has made in the world will not only be rainbow-hued but will also create ripples that will echo for generations to come.

One of the world’s most celebrated divers, Daley has one Olympic gold, silver, and three bronze medals to his name apart from being the poster boy of British diving. He once had an 80-foot-tall banner put up at a Cardiff departmental store. On 12 August 2024, Daley announced retirement, letting the curtains fall on a glorious career in which he saw some highs and lows, even more dramatic than his awe-inspiring dives. "I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It's the right time to call it a day," Daley reportedly said in an interview with British Vogue. Early mornings at the pool A young spiky-haired boy diving and then floating back up is a sight that is familiar to people across the globe. Daley participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished seventh in the individual 10 m platform competition. At the 2012 Olympics, he won the hearts of Britain and the world by winning an individual bronze medal. The British sensation finally won the coveted Olympic gold alongside Matty Lee in the men’s 10 M synchronised competition at Tokyo 2020. A five-minute, twenty-six-second YouTube video clip posted at 10:59 AM, eleven years ago, shows a young Daley looking directly into the camera while resting on a Union Jack-printed cushion. “I’m dating a guy, and I couldn’t be happier,” says a confident Daley, speaking publicly about his queerness for the first time. “I feel like now I'm ready and I wanted to do it, and people think, What will your dad say or your dad would have said? I mean, he always said to me, As long as you're happy, I'm happy,” says Daley, while knowingly breaking LGBTQIA+ stereotypes with an uncanny innocence. The video now has 13,122,502 views, and with the legend’s retirement, the count will only go up. Knitting his way to glory With deft fingers and intense concentration, Tom Daley was frequent on the stands at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the image of him sitting alone, due to Covid protocols, steadily knitting a scarf went viral. It prompted discussions about the gender binary and led to gender roles being broken across the world. Hordes of Twitter users rose up against the diver with queerphobic hate. But many also came out in his support, saying that he was breaking boundaries and easing the pressure off young men across the world. If an Olympic gold medalist can knit and openly wear bright colours, why can’t a young Indian living in New Delhi? Daley frequently travels the world but also supports queer rights in countries that criminalise it. At the onset of the Paris Olympic Games, Daley posted a cheekily captioned “Six boys, 5 rings” picture of him surrounded by other decorated divers. The tongue-in-cheek picture was just the latest in the long list of double-meaning yet inspiring pictures that Daley regularly posts from the world’s greatest sporting events. Daley’s social media provides an insider’s look into the life of an Olympian and frequently features dispatches from his travels across the world. His life with husband Dustin Lance Black and kids Robbie and Phoenix attracts likes and comments from millions across the world. People now have an overt example of how queerness and sporting glory intersect. ALSO READ | Tom Daley, former Olympic diving gold medalist, announces retirement Breaking boundaries in a divided world Daley’s unique personality, coupled with the echelons of sporting glory, makes the diver increasingly relevant in a world that hates Olympic gold medallists Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting for their gender. The world today not only requires out and proud queer people but also out-and-proud sportspersons. Daley's legacy Daley is leaving behind a career that will not only inspire millions of young divers but give countless young queers across the world the courage to come out and demand not sympathy but equity. The splash that the 30-year-old has made in the world will not only be rainbow-hued but will also create ripples that will echo for generations to come. UK's Olympic hero Tom Daley retires: The man who busted world records and phobia ‘dai-ly'

The United States pipped China for top spot in the battle of medals on Sunday as Paris prepared to bring the curtains down on one of the most successful Olympic Games in history.

In a thrilling finale that capped 17 days of spellbinding action, the United States women's basketball team squeezed past France 67-66 to clinch the last gold of the Games.

The win -- the eighth consecutive Olympic women's basketball won by the USA -- ensured the Americans finished level with China on 40 golds each as the games drew to a close.

The USA, however, finished on top of the overall medal table with a total of 126 medals, with China in second place with 91.

With the last of the medals handed out, attention turned to Sunday's closing ceremony spectacular at the Stade de France, where Hollywood star Tom Cruise is widely rumoured to feature as the countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics gets under way.

<h2>- Marathon magic -</h2>

Sunday's final day began with a gripping women's marathon victory by the Netherlands' long-distance running star Sifan Hassan.

Hassan had taken on what many considered to be a crazy gamble in Paris, competing in the 5,000m, the 10,000m and the marathon -- the last two events just two days apart.

But in a jaw-dropping sprint finish, Hassan overhauled Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa to take gold by three seconds in an Olympic record of 2hr 22min 55sec.

On Friday, she had taken bronze in the 10,000m after coming away with a bronze in the 5,000m.

She fell to the ground on the blue carpet in front of the golden dome of the Invalides memorial complex in the heart of Paris before grabbing a Dutch flag to celebrate an extraordinary achievement.

"It was not easy," said Hassan, 31. "It was so hot, but I was feeling OK. I've never pushed myself through to the finish line as I did today.

"Every moment in the race, I was regretting that I ran the 5,000m and 10,000m. I was telling myself that if I hadn't done that, I would feel great today."&nbsp;

"From the beginning to the end, it was so hard. Every step of the way. I was thinking, 'Why did I do that? What is wrong with me'?"

Wrestling, weightlifting, water polo, volleyball, modern pentathlon, handball, and track cycling were the other sports to crown Olympic champions on the last day.

Hungary's Michelle Gulyas ran and shot to Olympic gold in the modern pentathlon, with home favourite Elodie Clouvel roared on to clinch silver.

In weightlifting, China's jubilant Li Wenwen lifted her coach into the air instead of the bar, having already secured gold.

At the velodrome, Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen surged to the men's keirin for his third gold of the Games, ending British dominance of the event they had won at every Olympics since 2008.

New Zealand's Ellesse Andrews blasted to the women's sprint title to add to her keirin gold, while American cyclist Jennifer Valente won the women's omnium.

In men's water polo, Serbia won their third straight Olympic gold with a 13-11 victory over Croatia at La Defense Arena and pulled their coach into the pool in the celebrations.

<h2>- 'Precious' -</h2>

As the sport ends, attention turns to the closing ceremony and the next Olympics in Los Angeles in four years.

LA is expected to play heavily on its Hollywood star power and will roll out its big guns, with pop star Billie Eilish, rapper Snoop Dogg, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all confirmed.

The worst-kept secret in Paris is that "Top Gun" star Cruise appears poised to close the ceremony with a spectacular stunt sequence.

Cruise is filming the latest episode of the "Mission Impossible" franchise in Europe and has been a regular feature at Olympic events in Paris.

"On August 11, the Olympic Games will be over, and the Olympic flame will be extinguished," said Thomas Jolly, who masterminded the unique opening ceremony along the River Seine.

"That moment will remind us just how precious are these Olympic Games," added Jolly, whose opening ceremony sparked outrage in some quarters with a scene that appeared to parody the Last Supper.

Paris Olympics 2024: USA edge past China to top medal tally after winning last gold of Summer Games

India concluded their Paris Olympics campaign with six medals—five bronze and one silver. This marks India's third-best performance at the Olympic Games. To wrap up India's journey at the Paris Olympics, WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with Chef de Mission Gagan Narang. Tune in to hear their insightful conversation.

Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra's return to the country after conclusion of Paris Olympics 2024 has been delayed. The reason for Neeraj's delay is his groin injury for which he has travelled to Germany.

Neeraj is expected to consult a doctor in the European country before coming back to India. It is to be noted that Neeraj won a silver in men's javelin throw event at the Paris games with a throw of 89.45 metres on his second attempt.

"Chopra has left for Germany and he will not return to India for another month and a half," reported news agency PTI, citing a family source.&nbsp;

"I am not aware of the much of the details, but for sure he will consult a doctor there (Germany)," the source further added.

Neeraj has been suffering from groin injury for quite some time now and has said that he'll take a decision on surgery after the conclusion of the Paris games.

"I already threw 89.94m (in 2022) with this injury. When I throw, I always focus almost 50 per cent on my injury. We have to focus mostly on technique, but it's really hard for me with this injury," Neeraj had said.

"Doctors told me to go for surgery last year. I have been stretching myself till now... There have been treatments since. But we will have to take a big decision," he added.

During the Olympics, Neeraj had expressed his wish to take part in the Diamond League Final in September. He, however, has to play in at least one of the two remaining DL Meetings to confirm his place in the final. The next two DL meets are in Lausanne on August 22 or in Zurich on September 5.

The source told PTI that Neeraj's team of physio and coach will decide on his participation in the Diamond League Final "according to his condition."

Former Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley said Monday it was the "right time" to retire as Britain's most successful diver walked away from the sport following the Paris Games.

Daley, who won five Olympic medals during his decorated career, revealed the decision to call time on the sport during an interview with British Vogue.

The 30-year-old&nbsp;bowed out after winning silver in the Olympic men's synchronised 10m platform in France, having clinched the gold medal in the same event at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

"I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It's the right time to call it a day," Daley said.

Daley emerged as the star of British diving after first competing at the Olympics in the 2008 Beijing Games aged just 14.

He won bronze at the 2012 Olympics in London in the 10m platform, as well as bronze in the men's synchronised 10m platform in Rio 2016.

Daley had effectively retired after his gold medal success in Tokyo, before deciding to return for a fifth Olympics in Paris in order to compete in front of his two children.

He decided ahead of the event that he would stop diving competitively once he stepped out of the pool in Paris.

"It feels very, very surreal. I felt so incredibly nervous going into this, knowing it was my last Olympics," he told Vogue.

"There was a lot of pressure and expectations. I was eager for it to be done.

"But when I walked out, and saw my husband (Lance) and kids (Robbie and Phoenix) and my friends and family in the audience, I was like, you know what? This is exactly why I did this."

"It was emotional at the end, up there on the platform, knowing it was going to be my last competitive dive."

Daley's gold in Tokyo came alongside Matty Lee and he was back to defend his title in Paris after being convinced by his six-year-old son Robbie to return to the sport.

Daley and partner Noah Williams claimed silver in the competition, finishing behind China a fortnight ago.

Looking forward to spending more time with his family away from the Olympic spotlight, Daley has no fears he will regret retiring.

"I want to be with my family. I'm really excited to be able to spend some time with them and just be able to feel a bit normal for a couple of days," said Daley, who fulfilled a childhood dream by becoming the first diver to be a British flag bearer in the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris.

"It's always hard when you say goodbye to your sport. Lots of things to process, but I think it's the right time.&nbsp;

"This year felt like such a bonus and I got to compete in front of my family, my kids. I got to be flag flagbearer. So yeah, bucket list ticked off on every occasion."

A lifeguard had his moment at the Paris Olympics after he fished out a cap from the bottom of the pool during a swimming event. The crowd cheered him, applauding loudly, as he came out of the pool and showed off the swimming cap. The incident happened when officials spotted something inside the pool. The object led to a delay in the proceedings. While the swimmers put on warm-up jackets, one man took off his clothes to save the day. &nbsp;

The lifeguard came to the rescue and dived into the pool at La Défense Arena on Sunday in front of 15,000 people. Even before he entered the pool, people started cheering him on. Wearing colourful budgie smugglers, he swam down and emerged from the water with a cap in his hand. Turns out, American swimmer Emma Weber had lost one of her swim caps in the pool and didn't even know about it.

Everyone was focused on the lifeguard, who was the man of the moment. As he exited the pool with the cap in his hand, the crowd gave him a standing ovation, and he reciprocated all the love being showered by waving at them.&nbsp;

“As the lifeguards are the only people wearing swimwear, apart from the athletes, a request may be made to fetch an item at the bottom of the pool prior to the next race. In this case, the request was made to the lifeguard closest to the item," a spokesperson of the Paris Olympics told CNN.&nbsp;

The lifeguard was bestowed with several titles by the adoring crowds and even the media following the act, including "dad-bod hero" and “Bob the Cap Catcher”.&nbsp;

“That was an Olympic moment,” one commentator said.

Paris Olympics: Lifeguard saves the day during swimming event

Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis is in the news for not just his record-breaking feat at the Paris Olympics but also for his style of celebration. He won the gold with a 6.25-metre jump in the pole vault final at the Stade de France on Monday. Everyone present at the stadium cheered him on, including his competitors. Right after he made the gold-winning jump, he ran towards his girlfriend, Swedish model Desire Inglander, and kissed her, delivering a heartfelt and mushy moment at the games. He then hugged his teammates and punched one of them repeatedly in jest as he celebrated his win.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It didn't end there, as while greeting his family in the front row, Duplantis delivered a shrug like Michael Jordan. After this, he went on to copy Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec who won hearts with his cool and casual stance while hitting the target for a silver.&nbsp;

Interestingly, Duplantis had already bagged a gold with a 6.10-metre vault on Monday. However, he wanted to aim for a higher mark, and so, came out once again. His move paid off, as he set a new world record.&nbsp;

This was his second straight Olympic gold after winning in Tokyo. In doing so, he beat his own personal best score of 6.24 metres set in April. Before the Paris Olympics, he had won gold in the 2024 World Indoor Championships and at the 2024 European Championships.

<h2>Why does Mondo Duplantis vault for Sweden?</h2>

The Swedish-American pole vaulter was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, but represents Sweden instead of the United States. This is because his mother, Helena, is a former Swedish volleyball player and heptathlete. However, his father, Greg Duplantis, who is an American and a former pole vaulter, might have been the biggest reason why Mondo chose Sweden. His brother&nbsp;Andreas was already a part of the Swedish national pole vault team. Mondo wanted to play for the US. Things changed after&nbsp;Duplantis' father was offered a job as the national team pole vault coach by Sweden's Olympic youth coach. So, they all went towards Sweden.

Mondo also learned Swedish and took lessons over Skype to get better at his fluency. By 2020, he started to get a better grasp of the language. During the Tokyo Olympics, he stated that since his older brother Andreas represented Sweden at a youth level and because he loved Sweden as a child, it was an easy choice. However, he added that he feels a strong bond with Lafayette.&nbsp;

His brother Andreas was already a part of the Swedish national pole vault team. Mondo wanted to play for the US. Things changed after Duplantis' father was offered a job as the national team pole vault coach by Sweden's Olympic youth coach. So, they all went towards Sweden. Mondo also learned Swedish and took lessons over Skype to get better at his fluency. By 2020, he started to get a better grasp of the language. During the Tokyo Olympics, he stated that since his older brother Andreas represented Sweden at a youth level and because he loved Sweden as a child, it was an easy choice. However, he added that he feels a strong bond with Lafayette.
