During his visit to the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiri mountain ranges, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Dindigul C Sreenivasan was caught on camera making tribal boys remove his footwear before he could enter a shrine.

The video sparked a flurry of criticism and raging comments against the minister on social media.
In the video, the minister is seen walking along with members of the district administration and other officials while signalling tribal boys to come and "undo the buckle” of his footwear.

A source told WION that the boys in the video were members of the tribal community and that their parents worked with the forest department.

The 72-year old minister was in the Reserve to inaugurate a 48-day rejuvenation camp for captive elephants, where they would be given special care and rest.

After the incident caused a furore online, the minister issued a clarification saying, “I had gone to the elephant camp along with the officials and later we went by walk to the nearby Ganesha temple. Two kids who were playing there were the age of my grandchildren. I called him and asked him to help me undo my buckle. I called him nearby only because he was a small child and there was no ulterior motive to this. I called him considering him as my grandson”.

Speaking to WION, senior journalist and political analyst Sumanth C Raman said, “The act that he committed was wrong, as he had asked a third person to help remove his footwear. He must have provided a justification about his intentions containing no malice, but that does not justify what he has done with the child was right. In the case that he was unable to bend and remove his footwear due to a medical condition or physiological impediment, he could very well request for a chair and could have done it on his own, while being seated. Even in the clarification issued, he doesn’t speak of a medical issue that was preventing him from being able to bend”.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said Uttar Pradesh will play an important role in turning India into a five trillion dollar economy and also be counted among the three largest in the world by 2030.

Singh was addressing a seminar on UP's defence manufacturing corridor at DefExpo 2020.

"By 2030, India will be among the top three economies of the world. UP will have important role in it," he said.

"The PM has fixed a target of making India a five trillion dollar economy by 2024," he recalled. He said some economists are asking how the country will achieve this target when there is an slowdown in the world.

But despite the slowdown, India is the "fastest growing" economy, he said.

"If there is a decline in one quarter, it is not the matter of concern," the minister said.

He said World Bank has also predicted a revival.

That means there is no doubt that India will achieve the target of becoming a five trillion dollar economy, he said.

Singh said Uttar Pradesh will pay a major role in achieving the target and praised the steps taken by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

He said there is a single-window system for investors and connectivity through air, rail and road is very good in the state.

"We will not let you face any problem," he said, asking investors to choose UP. Chief Minister Adityanath made the same pitch to them.

Adityanath said the state has already prepared its defence manufacturing policy and has a large land bank.

"Organising the investors' summit in 2018 was like a big dream. We have received investment of Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the past two years," the CM said.

Eyeing two mega fighter jet deals worth over $25 billion, US aerospace major Boeing on Thursday said it is ready to bring transformative capability and contemporary warfighter technologies to India.

Boeing is a strong contender for Indian Air Force's proposed deal to acquire 114 fighter multi-role fighter jets and Indian Navy's proposal to procure 57 carrier-borne aircraft.

The company has already announced that it is ready to set up manufacturing facilities for its F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft if it bags the IAF contract.

"An important part of our India strategy is ensuring our defence customers have the most advanced platforms and capabilities, supported by a services model that optimises mission readiness, high performance and safety," said Boeing India president Salil Gupte.

"Another element of our strategy is to harness talent, innovation, engineering and productivity advantages that India offers to build a globally competitive aerospace and defence ecosystem that creates jobs and industrial capacity with Make in India," he said at the DefExpo.

On the Navy's plan to induct 57 jets, he said the F/A-18 on offer to India will be fully compatible with Indian Naval carriers.

At present, the Indian Navy has one aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, which is a Russian origin platform. The Navy's long-term plan is to have three aircraft carriers. Indigenously built aircraft carrier (IAC) INS Vikrant is expected to be fully operational by 2022.

At DefExpo, Boeing highlighted future investments to accelerate its "Make in India" efforts and the capabilities being proposed for the Indian armed forces, specifically the next generation F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet fighter that the company said will bring transformative capability and contemporary warfighter technologies to the country.

In April last year, the Indian Air Force issued an RFI (Request for Information), or initial tender, to acquire 114 jets at a cost of around $18 billion. It was billed as one of the world's biggest military procurement programme in recent years.

The top contenders for the deal include Lockheed's F-21, Boeing's F/A-18, Dassault Aviation's Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russian aircraft Mig 35 and Saab's Gripen.

In 2018, the Indian Navy kick-started the process to procure 57 multi-role combat aircraft for its carriers.

At present, six planes are compatible for the aircraft carrier -- Rafale (Dassault, France) F/A 18 Super Hornet (Boeing, US), MIG-29K (Russia), F-35B and F-35C (Lockheed Martin, US) and Gripen (Saab, Sweden).

While F-18, Rafale and MIG-29K are twin-engine jets, the other three have a single engine.

Surendra Ahuja, managing director of Boeing's India operations, said the company is ready to expand its operation in the country and referred to the recent induction of

Boeing's Chinook heavy-lift and AH-64E Apache attack helicopters by the Indian Air Force.

He said the company will also focus on establishing local rotorcraft training and support facilities.

"We are committed to working with our customers to provide holistic solutions for their defence aircraft and services with the right capability, advanced technologies and cost structure. Eyeing two mega fighter jet deals worth over $25 billion, US aerospace major Boeing on Thursday said it is ready to bring transformative capability and contemporary warfighter technologies to India.

Surendra Ahuja, managing director of Boeing's India operations, said the company is ready to expand its operation in the country and referred to the recent induction of Boeing's Chinook heavy-lift and AH-64E Apache attack helicopters by the Indian Air Force. He said the company will also focus on establishing local rotorcraft training and support facilities. "We are committed to working with our customers to provide holistic solutions for their defence aircraft and services with the right capability, advanced technologies and cost structure. We have accelerated our efforts to set up a local sustainment support footprint in India to be more responsive to our customers' needs," said Ahuja. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took repeated digs at opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi of the Congress whom he dubbed as "tubelight" saying that it took him 30-40 minutes to respond to his speech in Lok Sabha.

Without naming Rahul Gandhi, Modi in his reply to the discussion on the presidential address referred to the Congress leader's comments he had reportedly made about "youth beating Modi with sticks over the lack of jobs", and said he would increase the number of Surya Namaskars (a yoga exercise) so that his back can bear the sticks.

"In 70 years, no Congress leader has ever become self- sufficient. I heard one leader's manifesto yesterday. He said 'we will beat Modi with a stick in six months'. I can imagine that it is a difficult prospect, so it will take six months to prepare.

"In these six months, I will do more surya namaskar so that my back is ready for the beating...I have been subjected to abuses in the past 20 years, I will make myself gaali-proof (abuse-proof) and also danda-proof (stick-proof)," Modi said.

When Rahul Gandhi got up from his seat and questioned Modi on the issue of unemployment, Modi said he was waiting for the Congress leader's reaction but it took him 30-40 minutes.

India's biennial DefExpo has started in Lucknow on Wednesday and this is perhaps one of the largest defence expos that India has ever organised.

More than one thousand companies are there. For the sake of comparison — the last edition had 700 odd companies — it was held in Chennai.

This time, defence ministers from 38 countries are attending. 172 foreign companies are making their pitch-- last time, there were 160 but — the emphasis is not on foreign companies.

It's on the Indian ones. The idea is to showcase India. The theme is India — an emerging defence manufacturing hub.

More than 800 Indian defence companies are participating. Companies like the Mahindra group, Adani defence aerospace, Hinduja group and reliance defence also have experience in building defence equipment.

But India is far from a manufacturing hub, much less for defence. Make in India for the defence was a great idea. But it has failed to take off.

As of December, last year projects worth more than Rs 3.5 lakh crore had not been cleared. This includes contracts for fighter jets, infantry combat vehicles, transport aircraft and more.

They are all stuck at different stages. Some of them are just waiting for a final contract to launch production. So no major "Make in India" defence project has taken off in the last six years.

According to experts, Indian defence companies are not yet ready to take up big-ticket projects. Bureaucratic delays and long processes are holding back defence deals.

There is also a fund crunch. India's defence budget got a marginal increase of nine per cent this year. But, most of it goes towards paying pensions and salaries of personnel.

The armed forces might not have enough money left to pursue modernization plans. This, in turn, impacts the Indian government's plans to push more indigenous defence projects.

Morning News Brief: Trump's State of the Union address, Coronavirus death toll shoots up, and more

The Justice Aruna Jagadeesan commission that is probing the May 2018 violence that erupted in Tuticorin during the anti-Sterlite protests which resulted in 13 deaths after police opened fire, has summoned actor Rajinikanth for his remarks on the protests. The superstar has been asked to depose before the commission on February 25th.

Speaking to the media in Tuticorin on May 30th, after visiting the protestors who were injured in the violence, Rajini had asserted that, anti-social elements had managed to infiltrate into the protests and unleashed violence, which led to police firing. Despite drawing flak for his comments from the protestors and political parties, the actor stood his ground.

When he has demanded a clarification on the evidence behind his remarks, Rajini said, “Don’t ask me how I know, I know all of that.”

The commission led by retired Madras High Court Judge Aruna Jagadeesan was set up by the Tamil Nadu government after protests against Vedanta’s Sterlite copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi district took a violent turn on May 22 with at least 13 people were killed in alleged police firing.

Thirty others were injured as a mob of thousands of people went on a rampage demanding the polluting factory be shut down.

The commission has summoned police officers, employees of Sterlite and doctors as part of its investigation.

During an appearance before the commission in October last year, fringe outfit leader Seeman had said that Rajinikanth should be summoned before the commission for deposition, as the evidence that the actor had might have driven to make the statement.
