In the second incident of thwarted Ecstasy smuggling via foreign post in a week, Chennai Customs have seized a parcel containing 100 pills of MDMA, worth over 3 lakh Rupees. In both these cases, based on intelligence inputs, the parcel was seized at the foreign post office and also arrests were made from other states.&nbsp;

The parcel which was addressed to a person in Erode, Tamil Nadu had arrived at the Foreign Post Office in Chennai, from Frankfurt, Germany. It was found to contain light yellow coloured pills and a few light pink coloured pills. The pills tested positive for MDMA (3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), a narcotic substance.

Of the Seized pills, yellow hexagonal-shaped ones, with ‘Philipp Plein’ aka PP SKULL marking have been around since 2017 and contain 225 mg of MDMA, whereas the light pink pills with ‘CNN’ &nbsp;marking contains 285mg of MDMA. Samples have been sent to the laboratory.&nbsp;

In order to apprehend the recipient, when Customs Officials had visited the cosigned address, they learnt that it was his parent’s house. His mother had informed the Officials that he was living in Bengaluru and hadn’t returned home since the lockdown started.&nbsp;

As a follow-up action, searches were carried out at his apartment located in the upscale Koramangala locality of Bengaluru, by a team of Air Customs, Chennai and Bangalore City Customs. The accused, a 25-year old Malaysian national of Indian origin, working with a leading firm was apprehended and brought to Chennai by road. He was arrested under the NDPS Act and was produced before the judicial magistrate and was remanded to judicial custody.

When asked about a majority of contraband (in pills) coming in from Europe, Commissioner of Customs, Rajan Chaudhary said that it was due to the high quality. “Tablets manufactured there are of very high quality, unlike the ones that are locally sourced. &nbsp;Pills coming from Europe are found to have a high percentage of MDMA and it is used in parties. This individual received it from a friend who was living abroad”, he told WION.&nbsp;

MDMA is commonly known as Ecstasy, a party drug that alters mood and perception and is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens which produce feelings of increased energy and pleasure. The seized pills are extremely potent as they contain a very high dosage of MDMA. Dosage above 120 mg is considered to be quite high and can be fatal.

Last Thursday, Ecstasy pills worth Rs.12lakhs were seized and a person living in Andhra was arrested. In March as well, Air Customs had seized ecstasy pills worth Rs. 30 Lakhs at Foreign Post Office, Chennai and arrested a Mysore based person.

Sivan elaborated on the vision and the way ahead.&nbsp;

WION had earlier reported about how Private players were welcome in India’s Space journey, but ISRO needs an organizational revamp to enhance focus on R&amp;D.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/private-players-welcome-in-indias-space-journey-but-isro-needs-an-organizational-revamp-to-focus-on-rd-301484">Also read:&nbsp;Private players welcome in India’s Space journey, but ISRO needs an organizational revamp to focus on R&amp;D</a>

In a televised address, Dr Sivan said that, as India transits into a new space era start-ups and private industries are enabled to play a significant role in the space sector. “Private companies can play a bigger role than just supply of parts and components. They will be enabled to perform end-to-end space services, from building and launching rockets and satellites to owning satellites and providing space-based services. These activities will be open to big and small industries, start-ups and academia”, he said.

While adding that the IN_SPACe board may take 3-6 months to become operational, Dr Sivan said that Private companies could apply even now for different functions and get their requests processed in fast-track mode. He also said that the existing policies would be modified to make this system function effectively to provide fair and equitable space for Private enterprises.&nbsp;

In an Exclusive Interview, Dr Sivan, Chairman ISRO &amp; Secretary Department of Space shared the vision behind the reforms that are being rolled out and elaborated on the progress of various current and future missions.&nbsp;

WION: Currently private players manufacture and supply components for our rockets and satellites, but what is your long-term vision and when can they perform end-to-end operations?&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: As you said private players are supplying components and modules. But space activities involves making the rockets, spacecraft, providing services and other things. This reform that we are talking about is enabling them to carry out space activities such as rocket-building, satellite building, owning spacecraft and providing services. That is the vision and purpose of this reform.&nbsp;

WION: By when are we expecting this to materialize, because this seems to be a long term plan, as also the Minister had specified yesterday.&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: We are providing the platform for the private players to do the work. When and how they will be able to come into these activities, we have to wait and see. Already some start-ups have been working on these activities.

WION: Space is one field that involves extremely high investment, high risk and also the return on investment is quite slow. How do you think our private sector and start-ups will be able to match up to this level of investment?

Dr Sivan: They (private players) have to take high risks. For high investment, we are supporting them in this aspect by allowing them to share our facilities. So they need not establish high-cost facilities on their own. That way some easing of the burden will be there. Regarding the return of investment, there are some sectors that offer a lot of return, such as applications, ground-segment of satellites. Returns may be very small in rockets or spacecraft and they are risky also. I am sure that the private sector will take care of all these things and do the needful to become entrepreneurs in this area.&nbsp;

WION: Many decades from now, when this vision becomes a reality, are we looking at ISRO purely focusing on R&amp;D and routine launch operations being outsourced to private companies?&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: This plan is not about giving any work of ISRO to private companies. We must keep in mind that we are allowing private people to do the job, it is not that some job of ISRO is removed and given to private players. Industries will be enabled to carry out these activities and ISRO will continue its duties. ISRO will have to spend more time and energy on advanced technology development, advanced missions and national missions, in addition to existing duties. We are asking industry to get involved in space activities and that is our vision.&nbsp;

WION: Is this reform an attempt to replicate a Western model of a Military-Industry-Academia nexus? Because, that is what led to success of their space programmes?

Dr Sivan: Definitely it will finally involve the industries to get more and more involvement in the activities and these reforms will pave the way for that.&nbsp;

WION: Would ISRO be charging the private industries for offering them training and resources? How will this be worked out?

Dr Sivan: It may be charged basis only, but specifics such as how much would be charged, would be decided on a case-to-case basis.&nbsp;

WION: In the case of rocket launches by private firms, will private companies be operating the entire launch apparatus or will they hand over complete rockets for ISRO to do the launching?&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: We have to see their requests, what they are expecting us to share and contribute. We need to discuss that aspect and it is all based on their requests. We will decide based on what they (industry) come up with.&nbsp;

WION: There are apprehensions raised about sensitive, dual-use nature of rocket and specifically launch vehicle technology. How are we going to deal with it as very few countries have this technology?

Dr Sivan: One of the directorates as a part of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre) will be Safety and Security, legal directorates. We are thinking of 5 directorates in total such as, technical, safety&amp;security, legal, monitoring and promotion. These directorates will take care of all the aspects that we are referring to.&nbsp;

WION: When it comes to having launches by private firms, we should be having multiple contingency plans in place. Rocket science is risky and there could be mishaps. Who takes up responsibility in such cases?&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: That is the discretion of the particular arm called IN-SPACe and they have to have a mechanism. We will also be having the Space Act Bill and that will define the responsibilities.&nbsp;

WION: Pertaining to the development of India’s Semi-Cryogenic engine, how far have we come and how many years until we have a more powerful engine? Will private players be allowed to build sophisticated components such as thrusters and engines?

Dr Sivan: Private players will definitely be allowed to build rocket engines, but it requires a lot of investment. If they are ready to do it, we welcome them to invest work on the task. ISRO’s Semi-cryogenic engine development is going on and soon we will be getting the test results. Because of the lockdown and Covid-19 scenario, our activities were affected for some time. I’m sure that things will be relaxed and in better shape after some time.&nbsp;

WION: We are curious to know how India’s top scientists are perhaps working from home during these unprecedented times. How much is ISRO able to WFH, without the labs and equipment?

Dr Sivan: Our activities involve many things including software development, documentation, review, and lab-work among others. Many activities such as reviewing, designing, documentation etc we could easily work from home. Once the partial unlock began, we start making use of our labs also.&nbsp;

WION: 2020-21 is a busy year for ISRO with a lot of big-ticket projects. We have Chandrayaan 3, Gaganyaan, Aditya L1, and NI-SAR. How are we going to catch up once normalcy resumes?

Dr Sivan: It is a difficult question. We need to pick up the pace, once the situation becomes normal. We will work out a strategy and wait for things to become normal.&nbsp;

WION: Around November 2019, ISRO had a record 3 launches in a span of 35 days. Do you think we will scale up the capability to that limit hereafter?

Dr Sivan: Definitely, always we have been making records and here also we will do it.&nbsp;

WION: We are talking about the vision of Self-reliant India. When can we expect Indian rockets to compete in the big league of rockets and lift over 10tons to geostationary orbit?&nbsp;

Dr Sivan: Rocket development requires and huge investment and another testing.&nbsp;

If private players are willing to invest such money, we welcome them to produce huge rockets. Otherwise, ISRO has a plan to develop huge rockets that are meant to launch the heavy payload.

WION: Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) was to make its debut this year. In what stage is the SSLV project and when can we expect the launch?

Dr Sivan: We are very close to achieving the mission, but we are waiting for Covid-19 and its related issues to come to a better situation.

We are asking industry to get involved in space activities and that is our vision. WION: Is this reform an attempt to replicate a Western model of a Military-Industry-Academia nexus? Because, that is what led to success of their space programmes? Dr Sivan: Definitely it will finally involve the industries to get more and more involvement in the activities and these reforms will pave the way for that. WION: Would ISRO be charging the private industries for offering them training and resources? How will this be worked out? Dr Sivan: It may be charged basis only, but specifics such as how much would be charged, would be decided on a case-to-case basis. WION: In the case of rocket launches by private firms, will private companies be operating the entire launch apparatus or will they hand over complete rockets for ISRO to do the launching? Dr Sivan: We have to see their requests, what they are expecting us to share and contribute. We need to discuss that aspect and it is all based on their requests. We will decide based on what they (industry) come up with. WION: There are apprehensions raised about sensitive, dual-use nature of rocket and specifically launch vehicle technology. How are we going to deal with it as very few countries have this technology? Dr Sivan: One of the directorates as a part of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre) will be Safety and Security, legal directorates. We are thinking of 5 directorates in total such as, technical, safety&security, legal, monitoring and promotion. These directorates will take care of all the aspects that we are referring to. WION: When it comes to having launches by private firms, we should be having multiple contingency plans in place. Rocket science is risky and there could be mishaps. Who takes up responsibility in such cases? Dr Sivan: That is the discretion of the particular arm called IN-SPACe and they have to have a mechanism. We will also be having the Space Act Bill and that will define the responsibilities. WION: Pertaining to the development of India’s Semi-Cryogenic engine, how far have we come and how many years until we have a more powerful engine? Will private players be allowed to build sophisticated components such as thrusters and engines? Dr Sivan: Private players will definitely be allowed to build rocket engines, but it requires a lot of investment. If they are ready to do it, we welcome them to invest work on the task. ISRO’s Semi-cryogenic engine development is going on and soon we will be getting the test results. Because of the lockdown and Covid-19 scenario, our activities were affected for some time. I’m sure that things will be relaxed and in better shape after some time. WION: We are curious to know how India’s top scientists are perhaps working from home during these unprecedented times. How much is ISRO able to WFH, without the labs and equipment? Dr Sivan: Our activities involve many things including software development, documentation, review, and lab-work among others. Many activities such as reviewing, designing, documentation etc we could easily work from home. Once the partial unlock began, we start making use of our labs also. WION: 2020-21 is a busy year for ISRO with a lot of big-ticket projects. We have Chandrayaan 3, Gaganyaan, Aditya L1, and NI-SAR. How are we going to catch up once normalcy resumes? Dr Sivan: It is a difficult question. We need to pick up the pace, once the situation becomes normal. We will work out a strategy and wait for things to become normal. WION: Around November 2019, ISRO had a record 3 launches in a span of 35 days. Do you think we will scale up the capability to that limit hereafter? Dr Sivan: Definitely, always we have been making records and here also we will do it. WION: We are talking about the vision of Self-reliant India. When can we expect Indian rockets to compete in the big league of rockets and lift over 10tons to geostationary orbit? Dr Sivan: Rocket development requires and huge investment and another testing.

ISRO welcomes Private Cos in Space Research, they have to take risks and get returns: Dr K Sivan

Russia will deliver on India request for defence equipment in 2-3 months and is waiting for an official listed to hand over from New Delhi. During Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's Russia earlier this week visit, India had requested for defence supplies, mostly daily requirements for the armed forces.&nbsp;

Russia was positive on Indian request and assured of early delivery. Russian Govt Sources said, "we will soon get the exact list and we will try our best to deliver at earliest, most probably within 2-3 months".&nbsp;

While the request is for daily requirement defence equipment, the sources said no urgent request for delivery of S400 or SU 30 by the India side. The Russian side has already "speed up" the delivery "as much as possible" but for that kind of a "sophisticated system, we are making it as early as we can, because India's ministry of defence long back requested us to speed up", the source explained.&nbsp;

During the visit, Defence minister Rajnath Singh had met the Russian deputy PM Yury Borisov. After the meeting, Singh said, “All our proposals have received a positive response from the Russian side. I am fully satisfied with my discussions." The Russian side also assured that ongoing contracts "will be maintained and not just maintained, in a number of cases will be taken forward in a shorter time", he added.

Raksha Mantri was on a 3-day visit to Moscow from Monday at the invitation of the Russian Defence Minister to attend the 75th Anniversary of Victory Day Parade. The parade saw the participation of 75 members’ strong Indian contingent.

Nearly 250 Indians stranded in Pakistan due to coronavirus lockdown return home

Striking a conciliatory tone after raising tensions in eastern Ladakh to a fever pitch, China on Thursday said it was ready to work with India to properly deal with the border standoff while noting that "suspicion and friction" was a wrong path that goes against the fundamental aspirations of people of the two countries.

In an interview to PTI, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidon said India and China are able to properly manage their differences, and called upon New Delhi to avoid taking actions that may "complicate" the situation in eastern Ladakh. He went on to add that at present, the overall situation in the China-India border areas is "stable and controllable."

"We hope the Indian side meets the Chinese side halfway, avoids taking actions that may complicate the border situation and takes concrete actions to maintain stability in the border areas," he said.

The Indian and Chinese armies are locked in a bitter standoff in multiple locations in eastern Ladakh for the last six weeks, and the tension escalated manifold after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent clash in Galwan Valley on June 15.

The Chinese ambassador said "mutual respect and support" is a sure way and meets the long-term interests of both countries, but at the same time, largely put the onus on India to ease tension in the region.

"China and India are both large developing countries and emerging economies with more than one billion people, and both have the historic mission of realising our own development and revitalisation," he said.

He further said: "China and India are willing and able to properly manage differences. In the last few weeks, both sides have held a series of diplomatic and military talks to cool down temperature even as Chinese military has increased its presence in all sensitive areas along the 3,500 km Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de-facto border.

At a weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday said Chinese side departed from previously agreed understanding in respect the Galwan Valley area and sought to erect structures just across the LAC.

"When this attempt was foiled, Chinese troops took violent actions on June 15 that directly resulted in casualties," the spokesperson asserted.

He said the conduct of Chinese forces this year has been in complete disregard of all mutually agreed norms.

The ambassador said:"Mutual respect and support is a sure way and meets the long-term interests of both countries; suspicion and friction is a wrong path and goes against the fundamental aspiration of the two peoples."

"Under the guidance of the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, we are ready to work with the Indian side to properly deal with the current situation, jointly uphold peace and stability in the border areas, and ensure a sound and steady development of bilateral relations," Sun said.

In their historic informal summit in Chinese city of Wuhan in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in all areas of the India-China border region in the interest of the development of bilateral relations.

The summit had taken place months after a 73-day military face-off between the two armies in Doklam that raised fears of a war between the two Asian giants. In the course of the interview, Sun repeated the Chinese government's stand -- which has been rejected by India -- that Indian troops are responsible for the Galwan Valley clashes, and indicated that the onus was on India to improve the situation in eastern Ladakh.

"The onus is not on China. The Indian side crossed the LAC (Line of Actual Control) for provocation and attacked the Chinese border troops. The Indian forces seriously violated agreements on border issues between the two countries," he said.

After the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in Galwan clashes, India called it "a premeditated and planned action by China" and sent a veiled warning to China saying "India wants peace but if provoked, India is capable of giving a befitting reply".

Referring to talks between foreign ministers of the two countries on June 17, the envoy said both sides agreed to "fairly address" the serious situation caused by the Galwan conflict and vowed to jointly follow the consensus reached at the commander-level meeting on June 6 to ease the situation as soon as possible.

Sun said China would not like to see a similar situation like the Galwan clashes, repeating Chinese foreign ministry's allegations that India was responsible for it.

The Ambassador said the two sides kept peace for decades in Galwan Valley, adding since the beginning of 2020, the Indian side has built facilities at or the crossing of the LAC in the Galwan Valley, "constantly changing the status quo of ground control.

On May 6, he claimed the Indian troops crossed the LAC in the Galwan Valley by night and trespassed into Chinese territory.

"They resorted to violent means to create a standoff between the two sides and built infrastructures in an attempt to maintain a permanent presence," he alleged.

India has been maintaining that Galwan Valley belongs to it and has strongly rejected China's claim of sovereignty over it.

Sun said Chinese side lodged representations on multiple occasions to the Indian side through military and diplomatic channels following the incident and that India agreed to withdraw its personnel from the area.

The two sides held Lt General-level talks on June 6 during which they agreed on disengagement of troops from all the standoff areas.

The ambassador said the Indian side promised in the talks that they would not cross the estuary of the Galwan river to patrol and build facilities, adding the two sides agreed to build observation posts on either side of the Galwan river mouth.

"However, after the commander-level meeting, when the situation on the ground was already easing, the Indian border troops copped out on the consensus reached at the commander-level meeting, demanded that China dismantle its observation post," he said.

India has been consistently maintaining that Galwan Valley clashes had taken place on the Indian side of the LAC. The envoy said actions taken by the Indian side are not in consonance with the spirit of several agreements signed by the two countries.

According to a report, Pakistan plans to link the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with the Eurasian Economic Union.

This is an alliance between Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. There is also a plan to expand the capacity of the Gwadar port.

Russia is reportedly ready for deals with Pakistan, and is keen on participating in gas pipelines, electricity and other energy projects.

In 2019, Russia had announced plans to invest $14 billion in Pakistan's energy sector.

Also, what keeps Russia and Pakistan together is Afghanistan. Islamabad has been playing broker between the Taliban and world powers.

Russia, which is party to the Afghanistan conflict, actively engages with Islamabad.

In fact, earlier this month, Pakistan participated in consultations with China, the United States and Russia. It was a video conference to speed up the intra-Afghan talks.

Russian news agency Tass carried a press release about the virtual meeting.

To be precise, Pakistan wants to shape the Russia-China-Pakistan axis. Beyond plans to sell military hardware, Russia has also been conducting joint military exercises with Pakistani troops. They are called friendship drills.

These military exercises have been happening since 2016. But such friendships may prove to be expensive for Russia. A crumbling Pakistan and a cornered China can only add to Vladimir Putin's problems.

Why India must be wary of Russia's engagement with Pakistan

The clout of China, or the authoritative regime of Xi Jinping to be precise, is growing over modern day Russia, standing to hamper its alliance with India. And New Delhi should be worried.

The China-Russia axis is not just about economics. Both countries have similar origins and the same ideological core.

In Russia, it was Joseph Stalin who rose to power.

Stalin's Russia then actively helped Mao Zedong to take power in China.&nbsp;

In fact, Mao even trained both communist leaders.

Both had a cult of personality -- that gave them complete control over their countries.

Several years later, the Soviet Union collapsed, but communism didn't die.

China took lessons from the fall of the Soviet Union, and created a new and uglier brand of communism.

Today, the Communist Party has complete control on China. It wants to bring weaker nations under its sphere of influence, and mould international institutions using Chinese characteristics.

Russia, which forgot a pandemic on Wednesday to celebrate the success of Stalin against the Nazis, has found an old best friend in China.

Both China and Russia share similar values on the global stage. They are lead by strong leaders -- just like the times of Mao and Stalin -- Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin respectively.

Both leaders enjoy a cult of personality that is unrivalled. Their grip on power is absolute, and their friendship is there for the world to see.

Last year, at Xi's birthday, Putin had arrived bearing gifts -- a giant box of ice cream to be exact.

There are many such moments that stand out in the friendship of Putin and Xi. They have done photo-ops together; they have unveiled pandas at the Moscow zoo together; and they have cooked together, and that too not once, but twice.

In 2018, Putin made dumplings with Xi Jinping during a visit to China.

And when Xi came to Russia, they made pancakes together.

This bromance has resulted in a strong Russia-China partnership. And this is one friendship that India needs to be wary of.

The economic ties are the foundation of the Russia-China relationship.

China is Russia's biggest trading partner, and its largest Asian investor. As of September last year, Russia had a little over 12 per cent of its foreign currency assets in the Chinese currency.&nbsp;

Considering the various American sanctions on Russia, Moscow had shifted its reserves to the Euro and Yuan.

But despite being the best of friends, both countries don't see eye to eye on all issues. For example, China does not recognise Crimea as part of Russia.

Russia too hasn't backed China's claims over the entire South China sea.

And it is these differences that New Delhi needs to leverage -- if it wants to keep Russia on its side.

The clout of China, or the authoritative regime of Xi Jinping to be precise, is growing over modern day Russia, standing to hamper its alliance with India. And New Delhi should be worried.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday there was nothing wrong in imports to spur growth but wondered why even Ganesha idols should be bought from China.

Importing raw materials that were not available in the country and needed for our industries was not wrong, she said addressing the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit workers via a virtual link.

"There is nothing wrong in imports that would spur production and create job opportunities and it can be done definitely," she said while speaking on the Centre's Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan initiative.

However, imports that could not bring benefits like employment opportunities and support growth would not help self-reliance and the Indian economy, she said.

Ganesha idols made of clay have been traditionally bought from the local potters during Ganesh Chaturthi festival every year, she said.

"But today, why even Ganesha idols are imported from China. Why such a situation can't we make a Ganesha idol from clay, is it the situation?" she asked.

She wondered if importing household products used every day like a soap-box, plastic items or incense sticks used for pooja purposes would support self-reliance especially when such products were made locally by Indian firms and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Such a situation of importing things that are locally made and available should change and self-reliance is the basic idea behind the Aatmanirbhar Abhiyan, she said.

Self-reliance was practised in India for long, but it faded subsequently and now the Abhiyan initiative stood for local manufacturing, she said.

"Self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan) does not mean that imports should not be done at all.

For industrial growth and creation of job opportunities here, you may please do whatever imports that are needed.

“In her speech in Tamil, she referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "Modi Ayya (sir)," and listed out the "achievements" of the government in the past one year after her party returned to power at the Centre.

She praised the valour of Havildar K Palani from Tamil Nadu who was among the 20 soldiers killed in a clash with Chinese troops at Ladakh on June 15.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the nationwide emergency to save her PM's chair as her election to Lok Sabha from Raebareli was set aside by Allahabad High Court on the ground of malpractices.

"Today we recall the draconian day of 25 June 1975, when the then Congress Government led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed emergency to save her PM chair as her election to Lok Sabha from Raebareli was set aside by Allahabad High Court on the ground of malpractices," said Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

"During the emergency period, prominent leaders like JP Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Chandrashekhar, LK Advani, and George Fernandes were arrested and tortured," he added.

The Union Minister elaborated saying "even media was not spared and censorship was imposed. Even judiciary was not spared, those whose judgment Congress party found uncomfortable were superseded. Even the unmarried people were forcibly sterilized."

Ravi also slammed the slogan of "India is Indira and Indira is India," which was started by the then Congress leader Debakanta Baruah.

"Debakanta Baruah coined the sycophantic slogan, "India is Indira and Indira is India." Back then, there was no limit to such sycophancy, he further said.

"Our leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Ananth Kumar, Sushma Swaraj, JP Nadda, and I opposed it and fought against the emergency as student leaders," he added.

Lastly, he slammed the functioning of the Congress party, saying that whoever goes against the party leader Rahul Gandhi is sidelined in the party.

"To date, Congress party has continued with its 'darbar' culture where Gandhi family calls all the shots at the party. Even to this day, whoever suggests anything against Rahul Gandhi is sidelined in the party," he added.

Emergency in India: When Indira Gandhi's dark move galvanized the Opposition

India is considering imposing an import tax of 20-25% on solar modules and 15% on solar cells for a year beginning in August, its power minister said on Thursday.

India does not currently levy a customs duty on imports of solar cells and modules, but has a safeguard duty to protect its local industry which expires in July.

“In the second year, we are looking to impose a 40% tax on solar modules,” R.K. Singh, India’s Power Minister said in a virtual news conference on Thursday, adding that cells will be taxed at 25% in the second year.

The energy hungry nation imports most of its solar cells and modules from China, in a bid to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of installing 100 gigawatts of solar energy by 2022.

Electricity generation from non-fossil fuel sources has been steadily rising and is expected to reach 40% by 2022, and over half of total output by 2030, Singh said.

Tensions between India and neighbouring China have been rising since May. Soldiers from the nuclear-armed countries fought with rocks, metal rods and wooden clubs at the Galwan Valley this month after a weeks-long standoff.

Major Indian traders have called for a boycott of Chinese goods, while some trade associations and stakeholders have argued that it may not be feasible.

Singh also said that there was a “good case” to extend a deadline for emissions standards, which involve installing Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) units that cut emissions of sulphur dioxide - known to cause lung diseases.

India’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected a request by power producers to extend a deadline to install equipment to cut emissions by two years to 2024. Power producers had asked the government to join them in asking the supreme court for an extension earlier this month.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta today informed the Supreme Court that the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) has decided to cancel 10th and 12th exams scheduled for July 1 to 15.

"As soon as conditions will be conducive, we could conduct the CBSE class 12 examinations for students who opt for it," India's Solicitor General said.

"Scheme has been formulated for assessment of class XII students on the basis of last exams," the government told India's top court.

The ICSE board also cancelled class 10th and 12 board exams. However, ICSE doesn't agree to give the option to students to write exam later, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court.

CBSE had announced the date sheet for the pending class 10 and 12 board exams in May after it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic as a lockdown was imposed on March 25. The CBSE had said that class 10th exams would be staggered on four dates, starting July 1.

Several schools had resorted to online classes as the coronavirus cases began to climb in March in India. The Delhi government had earlier requested the central government to promote Class X and XII students based on internal exams.

An Indian businessman and his wife were brutally murdered by a Pakistani man inside their villa in Dubai during a break-in and robbery bid, according to a media report.

Hiren Adhiya and Vidhi Adhiya, both in their 40s, were killed inside their villa at the Arabian Ranches.

Dubai Police arrested the Pakistani man in less than 24 hours, Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

Brigadier Jamal Al Jallaf, Director of Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police, said the daughter of the couple called the Dubai Police command room to report the incident.

"Patrols and forensic experts went to the two-floor villa. The father who worked as an executive manager at a company and his wife were killed. They are survived by their two daughters aged 18 and 13," the newspaper quoted Brig Al Jallaf said.

Indian Consul General in Dubai has identified the couple.

The police said the suspect broke into the villa on June 18 while the family was sleeping. He took a wallet containing Dh 2,000 (Rs 41,229) and went into the bedroom searching for more valuables.

"When the man woke up, the attacker stabbed him. The wife also woke up and the suspect stabbed her. He kept stabbing them until they died. When their 18-year-old daughter woke up and saw her parents in a pool of blood, the attacker stabbed her in the neck and escaped," Brig Al Jalaf added.

The daughter sustained minor injuries and she managed to call Dubai Police.

Officers found the knife one kilometre away from the villa and identified the suspect who was staying in another emirate.

Colonel Adil Al Joker, the assistant of the director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police, said that the suspect admitted to the crime and that he planned to break into the villa.

"He claimed that he used to do maintenance work in the villa over a year ago and had seen a large amount of money on the table, which was what lured him to break into the villa. He bought the knife on the day of the crime," Col Al Joker said.

Consul General Vipul told Gulf News, "The incident is very unfortunate and the consulate is in touch with friends of the couple."

He said some jewellery had also been stolen from the villa but it has been recovered.

Vipul said the couple ran their own business with an office in Sharjah.

Consul General Vipul told Gulf News, "The incident is very unfortunate and the consulate is in touch with friends of the couple." He said some jewellery had also been stolen from the villa but it has been recovered. Vipul said the couple ran their own business with an office in Sharjah.

India-China border tensions: Chinese troops begin withdrawal from Indian territory

India and China on Wednesday agreed to ensure expeditious implementation of the understanding on disengagement of troops from eastern Ladakh as decided in a meeting of senior military commanders on June 6.

The two sides held diplomatic talks through video conference. The talks were held between Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs Naveen Srivastava and Director General in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wu Jianghao.

However, China has significantly ramped up its military presence in several other key sectors along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

On Sunday, the Indian government gave the armed forces "full freedom" to give a "befitting" response to any Chinese misadventure along the LAC.

The Army has already sent thousands of additional troops to forward locations along the border in the last one week.&nbsp;The IAF has also moved a sizeable number of its frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar, Mirage 2000 aircraft and Apache attack helicopters to several key air bases including Leh and Srinagar following the clashes.

Meanwhile, the Chinese regime is still blaming India for escalating tensions and it has once again claimed sovereignty over the Galwan valley.

Amid China's rhetoric and lies also came a confession. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian accepted that construction of roads and bridges on the Indian side of the border was the reason behind China's aggression.

These contrasting statements only discredit everything that China has been saying.

China has been in occupation of Tibet since 1951 and the Tibetan government is in exile in India. Now with China's unprecedented aggression towards India, there's a growing sentiment among Indian citizens to call the border by its rightful name - the Indo-Tibet border.

From anti-China sentiments to anti-China decisions, reports have emerged that custom officials in Chennai have held Chinese shipments for extra checks. However, there is no official order from the government yet.

The Galwan clash has indeed been a turning point in India-China relations. If the anti-China sentiments in India are anything to go by, it may very well be a breaking point.

India-China standoff: Situation along the LAC continues to remain grim

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday attended the 75th Anniversary of Victory Day Parade in Moscow, where a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces was also participating.

Singh arrived in Moscow on a three-day visit on Tuesday at the invitation of the Russian Ministry of Defence to attend the 75th Anniversary of Victory Day Parade.

Singh is the first senior union minister to undertake a foreign visit in four months as international travels were restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic. He travelled by an Indian Air Force aircraft, while strictly following all laid precautions against the coronavirus infection.

Pictures showed that social distancing being maintained at the Red Square where the parade will take place.

The Tri-service 75-member Indian military contingent participated alongside armed forces personnel from at least 11 countries, including China.

On Tuesday, he called on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov and the two leaders held discussions on the bilateral relationship, regional issues, and reviewed the India-Russia defence cooperation.

Singh also conveyed his greetings for the solemn ceremonies of the 75th Victory Day and congratulated the "friendly" people of Russia, specially the veterans, who have contributed to the common security of India and Russia, an official statement said on Tuesday.

Russia postponed its military parade traditionally held on Moscow's Red Square on May 9 for a later date due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On May 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Victory Parade would be held on Moscow's Red Square on June 24, TASS news agency reported.

He explained that this was chosen because on June 24, 1945 the legendary historic parade of victors took place, when soldiers, who fought for Moscow and defended Leningrad, who stood their ground for Stalingrad, liberated Europe and stormed Berlin, marched on Red Square.

All this happened in the wake of India China clash at the LAC border.

And despite China's growing influence in Russia, Moscow chose to not take sides.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, had said, when asked about the India China standoff: "You know, we have never had such a goal to help India and China to develop bilateral relations. They have every opportunity to solve and consider any problems that arise in relations between them, and problems arise between any countries, including, of course, in between neighbours."

Such a calibrated response seen alongside India's participation in the victory day parade is a signal -- that the India-Russia relationship remains strong.
