Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announce first overseas engagement after UK return: Report

1,02,254 on Friday, with 2,988 fresh cases being added, seven months after India's first case was reported from the state, when a Wuhan returned medical student tested positive.

The state needs to maintain "extreme vigil" in the coming days as the daily cases have been crossing 3,000, Health minister K K Shailaja said.

The toll touched 410, with 14 deaths during the past few days being confirmed due to COVID-19, she said.
Of the positive cases, 2,738 were infected through contact and the source of infection of 285 people were not known.

Forty five of those infected had come from abroad and 134 from other states.

Fifty two health workers were among those who tested positive today-- the highest from Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, with 15 each, the minister said in a press release.

While 73,904 have so far recovered from the disease, including 1,326 whose samples returned negative today, 27,877 are presently undergoing treatment.

A total of 2.03 lakh people are under observation,of whom 21,492 are in hospitals, including 2,689 admitted today.

In the last 24 hours 35,056 samples have been tested and so far 20,53,801 samples have been sent for testing.
Thiruvananthapuram reported 494 cases, followed by Malappuram 390, Kollam 302, Ernakulam 295, Kozhikode 261, Kannur 256, Kottayam 221 and Alappuzha 200.

The minister said that for the last seven months, the state has been strongly waging a battle against the pandemic.

Health workers and all government machinery are engaged in tirelessly fighting the disease, she said.
Though the Covid tally touched the one lakh mark, the toll was only 410 and many have recovered, which speaks volumes about the state's excellent health care sector, the minister said, adding this is also due to the sincere work of the health workers.

In many other states, the toll was between 4-10 per cent of the total number of cases, while in Kerala it was only 0.4 per cent, she said.

The first Covid case in India was reported from Thrissur on January 30 when a Wuhan returned medical student tested positive for the virus.

The second and third cases were also Wuhan returnees from the state.

French Defence Minister Florence Parly on Thursday said India will have an edge over its enemies with the induction of Rafale fighter jets, an event she described as a symbol of the relationship between the two countries.

Speaking at the ceremony at Ambala airbase where five France-made aircraft were inducted into the Indian Air Force, the French defence minister said India and France are now writing a new chapter in their defence ties. She said the programme to deliver the 36 aircraft to India meant a lot.

India-China border tensions: Both sides agree on five-points plan to de-escalate situation

The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against unknown persons for fraudulently transferring rupees six lakh from the bank account of the Ram Mandir Trust through two fake cheques and attempting to transfer around Rs 10 lakh with a third cheque that was timely detected as counterfeit by the bank.

A case has been registered at the Kotwali police station on a complaint filed by the Trust's secretary and VHP leader Champat Rai, a senior police official said.

"We have seized the account in which the fund has been transferred. A police team has been sent to Lucknow and another team to Bombay as the account in which the money has been transferred is of Maharashtra," Ayodhya DIG Deepak Kumar told PTI.

He said those behind the crime have withdrawn rupees four lakh from the fraudulently transferred amount while rupees two lakh is still in their account.

Rupees 2.5 lakhs was fraudulently transferred from the Trust's account in State Bank of India (SBI) on September 1 and rupees 3.5 lakh on September 8 through a second fake cheque, the FIR said.

The issue came to light after a senior official of the SBI in Lucknow called Rai to confirm if the Trust had issued a cheque for transfer of Rs 9.86 lakh.

"We give phone calls to all our customers before clearing cheques (with large amounts). I myself called the customer regarding the clearing of cheque for Rs 9 lakhs 86 thousand and the customer (Rai) received the phone after many repeated calls," Mona Rastogi, deputy manager of the clearing department of SBI, told PTI.

She said it was certain that bank officials had called on the Trust's registered phone number to confirm payments for the first two "fake" cheques of Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh each before clearing the payments earlier this month.

"Definitely the bank had called the customer before clearing the cheques of Rs 2.5 lakhs and Rs 3.5 lakh. The call records and details are being checked to ascertain if the customer had received the calls," she said.

Rastogi said had Rai not taken her call, the third cloned cheque would also have been cleared because it appeared as original and the signatures too raised no doubts. "The cheques are cleared if the norms are followed and the signatures are found to be correct," she said.

In his complaint filed with the police, Rai stated that the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has crores of rupees in its bank account and it was earlier unaware that the funds were fraudulently transferred from the account.

Ayodhya DIG Deepak Kumar told PTI that an FIR has been lodged at the Kotwali police station here in this regard and investigation is being done.

"We have seized the account in which the fund has been transferred. Four lakh rupees from the account have been withdrawn but two lakhs rupees are still there," he said.

Continuous communication was maintained with the fisheries department, Tuticorin and the boat owner during the entire operation.

ICGS Vaibhav towed the boat and handed her (Jeraldon-2) along with her nine crew to another fishing boat which was deployed by the owner for assistance. The safe handover took place about 10 nautical miles inside the Indian waters, on Thursday evening.

The IMF on Thursday said that there is a need for another stimulus in India, especially expenditures on health, food and income support for vulnerable households, and support for businesses in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gerry Rice, Director of Communications Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), told reporters at a virtual news conference here that the Washington-based global financial institution supports the Indian government's responses to the pandemic including fiscal stimulus with a focus on low income workers and households.

"We support the monetary easing and liquidity and regulatory measures for the financial sector and borrowers that have taken place.

"We believe further fiscal stimulus is warranted, especially expenditures on health, food and income support for vulnerable households, and support for businesses," Rice said, responding to questions on the massive contraction that the Indian economy has experienced in the latest quarter due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the short term, a detailed well communicated and credible medium-term fiscal consolidation plan is also important, alongside an increase in fiscal transparency, the IMF spokesperson said.

"We hope that would help boost market confidence, thereby helping to reduce the cost of borrowing, as well as help the economy overall," he said.

Noting that the impact of the coronavirus pandemic is significant in India on development, and on poverty, Rice said that given the unprecedented shock, the immediate priority needs to be a coordinated policy response to fight the virus.

After the US, India has the second largest number of people who have been infected by coronavirus with more than 4.2 million positive cases. The US has the largest number with 6.4 million cases and 193,250 deaths.

Over 70,000 Indians have died due to coronavirus, as it has had an unprecedented impact on the India economy.

The preliminary GDP estimate for 2020, second quarter performance in India, came in weaker than expected, around 23 per cent as year on year, reflecting on the severe impact of the pandemic, and the ensuing lockdowns.

"The contraction and economic activity reflected broad base weaknesses in industries and services with construction, manufacturing, hotels and transportation sectors, suffering the most," Rice said.

In its last World Economic Outlook Update, the IMF projected India's growth at minus 4.5 per cent and six per cent for fiscal years 2020-21 and 2021-22 respectively, he said.

"The near-term growth outlook continues to be clouded by the global and domestic slowdown and uncertainties from the pandemic with significant downside risks. Of course, this is true, not just for India but for most countries," he said, adding that the IMF would be revising India's growth projections during the next World Economic Outlook release on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the IMF in October.
