In a major push to strengthen sports infrastructure, Maharashtra Chief MinisterDevendra Fadnavishas announced plans to build a world-class cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 1 lakh spectators.
The proposed stadium, which will be developed in collaboration with theMumbai Cricket Association, is expected to come up in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region or its vicinity. The state government has assured that suitable land will be allocated for the ambitious project, marking a significant step towards expanding Maharashtra’s cricketing footprint.
If completed as planned, the venue will rank among the largest cricket stadiums in India, second only to theNarendra Modi Stadiumin Ahmedabad, which currently holds the record as the world’s biggest cricket stadium with a seating capacity of over 1.3 lakh.
Officials indicated that the project is being envisioned as a next-generation sporting hub, equipped to host international matches, high-profile tournaments like theIndian Premier League, and other large-scale events. The move is also seen as a response to the growing demand for larger venues, as existing stadiums in Maharashtra—such as theWankhede Stadium—often operate at full capacity during marquee matches.
The timeline for the project is likely to align with the centenary celebrations of the Mumbai Cricket Association around 2030, although detailed project reports and execution plans are yet to be finalised.
Beyond cricket, the proposed stadium is expected to boost tourism, generate employment, and position Maharashtra as a key destination for global sporting events.
