Supreme Court puts release of Annu Kapoor’s Hamare Baarah on hold, calls the teaser 'offensive'

Trouble continues to mount for Annu Kapoor's movie Hamare Baarah. On Thursday (June 13), the apex court of Indiaput a stay on the release ofthe movie that was to hit theaters next day, Friday (June 14).
The bench of JusticeVikram Nathand JusticeSandeep Mehta imposed a stay on the film while hearing a plea that was filed againstBombay High Court’s decision, giving a green signal to therelease of the film.
The Supreme Court took the decisionafter taking note of allegations that the film is derogatory to the Islamic faith and married Muslim women.

Suspending the screening of the movie, the Supreme Court has called the teaser of the movie, ''offensive.''
"We have seen the movie trailer in the morning and all the offensive dialogues continue in the trailer," the bench said.

Reacting to the Bombay High Court decision of givinggreen signal to the movie release, the apex court has to takeexpeditious decision on the petition challenging the CBFC certificate of the movie.

During the hearing, the counsel representing the makers of the filmsaid that they had removed the changes that Bombay HC asked. Rejecting the claim, the judges said, “We saw the teaser today morning and all scenes are there.”
“If teaser is so offensive then what about the whole movie… Prima facie it seems you have failed since you yourself deleted the scenes from the teaser," the bench further said.
Reacting to the stay order, thelawyers representing the movieargued that the makers would have to facehigh losses.
Earlier, theKarnataka Governmentbanned therelease of the filmunder sections of the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1964. The state government has alleged that the release of the film may create communal disharmony in Karnataka.
