Super Mario Galaxy Movie first reactions are in - critics are saying THIS

It’s time to get back into the world of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the follow-up to 2023’s blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which brings back our beloved characters: Mario (Chris Pratt), Bowser (Jack Black), Luigi (Charlie Day), Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), among others.

After much anticipation, the movie has finally arrived, and the first reactions suggest that the second instalment has the same fate like the first one. It has received mixed reviews from the critics. But meets the expectations of fans.

Following its stunning predecessor, the movie is garnering strong reactions from both critics and audiences. In 2023, the animated adaptation of Nintendo’s video game franchise broke several box office records. Although it received mixed reviews, it went on to earn over $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year.

Now, the sequel is set to take things further, introducing more iconic characters from the franchise as they join Mario on a new adventure. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel returning as the screenwriter. And interestingly, the movie has scored 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is lower than the first film.

First Reviews are out: Does it live up to expectations?

Much like the first instalment, the sequel is also receiving mixed reviews from critics.

Owen Gleiberman, Variety, who called the first movie, one of the best animated films in years, called the second part, one of the worst.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is full of scenes of running, leaping, chasing, falling through the air, falling into lava, fighting and more fighting, but nothing in the movie is sustained. It’s a mad jumble, an eager product-tie-in mess. It’s one of the only animated features I’ve seen since the “Pokémon” films that seems to be wearing its Easter eggs on the outside. Owen wrote.

Wilson Chapman, Indiewire, says the movie offers a similar mind-numbing experience.

Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter, wrote in the reviews that the, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is “more,” as in more action, more characters, more Easter eggs, more everything.

''If I digress, it’s probably because there’s not a lot to say about the film, which basically involves the plumber brothers, accompanied by Princess Peach and Toad, venturing into space to rescue Rosalina. Cue the endlessly frenetic actions sequences, rendered in eye-popping, color-saturated animation that feels like the visual equivalent of sugary sweets, punctuated by the occasional jokes and gags that played well with the audience at the children-packed press screening.''
