According to a new study, the proliferation of face coverings in order to keep a check on Covid-19, isn`t keeping children from understanding facial expressions.

According to a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it is quite easy to understand the emotions of people around. Just by taking in all the hints, they`re dropping, whether on purpose or not. Yet when people cover some of their facial expressions, they take some of those cues away.

"We now have this situation where adults and kids have to interact all the time with people whose faces are partly covered, and a lot of adults are wondering if that`s going to be a problem for children`s emotional development," says Ashley Ruba, a postdoctoral researcher in UW-Madison`s Child Emotion Lab.

The researchers showed more than 80 children, ages 7 to 13, photos of faces displaying sadness, anger, or fear that were unobstructed, covered by a surgical mask, or wearing sunglasses. The kids were asked to assign an emotion to each face from a list of six labels.

The faces were revealed slowly, with scrambled pixels of the original image falling into their proper place over 14 stages to better simulate the way real-world interactions may require piecing things together from odd angles or fleeting glimpses.

The kids were correct about the uncovered faces as often as 66 percent of the time, well above the odds (about 17 percent) of guessing one correct emotion from the six options. With a mask in the way, they correctly identified sadness about 28 percent of the time, anger 27 percent of the time, and fear 18 percent of the time.

"Not surprisingly, it was tougher with parts of the faces covered. But even with a mask covering the nose and mouth, the kids were able to identify these emotions at a rate better than chance," says Ruba, who published results today in the journal PLOS ONE with co-author Seth Pollak, a UW-Madison psychology professor.Variations in the results reflect differences in the way emotional information is conveyed by the face.

Sunglasses made anger and fear difficult to identify, suggesting the eyes and eyebrows are important to those facial expressions. Fear, often confused with surprise, was also the trickiest for children to spot behind a mask -- which may have complicated matters by covering clues like surprise`s signature mouth shape. : OIf children can do better than guessing at emotions even with a mask in place, they`re likely to do even better in real-life situations."Emotions aren`t conveyed solely through your face," Ruba says.

"Vocal inflexions, the way that someone positions their body, and what`s going on around them, all that other information helps us make better predictions about what someone is feeling."It all adds up to kids growing in their emotional capabilities, even if some of their interactions with others are happening through face coverings."I hope this settles some nerves," Ruba says. "Kids are really resilient. They`re able to adjust to the information they`re given, and it doesn`t look like wearing masks will slow down their development in this case."

There is a time in perhaps most boys' life when his collection of Hot Wheels is his most prized possession. The nicely made toy cars zoom and whizz past the loops and whatnot. But these cars sometimes can cost a fortune, or if you are on the right side of the deal table, can even earn a fortune.

Bruce Pascal is one such guy. He is a commercial real-estate executive based in Washington DC area. He owns a Hot Wheels that has a value of 150,000 US Dollars.

The car in question isn't a supercar or miniature version of Batmobile but a 1969 version of 'beach bomb' Volkswagon bus.

Value of a collectible increases with its rarity and how old it is.

But before you dig up your closet to unearth you childhood toy collection, hear why Pascal's car is fetching the amount.

The 'beach bomb' car he owns was not sold in the open market. It was only made for testing inside Mattel's corporate offices.

The thing with Hot Wheels is, it is not just supposed to look slick but is also supposed run smoothly on the tracks Mattel provides.

Thing with the 'beach bomb' car is, the model flipped every time it was sped up rubber loops. To solve this problem, Mattel made modifications to the design and made the base heavier. But it didn't work during the testing.

However, this base-heavy version of the beach bomb car with two tiny surfboards protruding from the back has become stuff of legends. Only 50 models are believed to be there in the world.

Mattel eventually made more modifications to the car and the model that finally made its way to the market had surfboards coming out from its sides.

Staying overnight at an airport isn`t unheard of, especially if you miss a flight. But choosing to spend your holidays there in a tent is something entirely different.

With the coronavirus pandemic severely limiting trips abroad, some in Singapore this holiday season are going "glamping", or glamourous camping, staying overnight in luxury tents at the retail and leisure wing of the city-state`s Changi Airport.

"Usually we go out of the country every holiday but since we can`t travel much and it`s a school holiday, I thought why not do something different for the children," said Fadlina Musa, standing under twinkling fairy lights.

Her husband, Khairil Anuar Malek, said it was nice to get out of the house. "It has been very tough for all of us, so we wanted to experience closeness at a different level," he said.

Glamping isn`t cheap. Guests spend up to S$360 ($269) a night for queen-sized beds, shopping discounts, a cool box for picnics and plenty of festive Christmas lights. Private bathroom facilities are not provided.

Air-conditioned gardens, walking trails and an indoor waterfall provide a sense of the great outdoors, minus the bugs, rain and humidity.

Serene Beh, an accounting manager visiting the mall with her family, said she liked the idea, at the right price.

"I will look at the package," she said. "If it`s worth it, then I think it`s a good experience for the children who have never been camping before."

The `glamp-cations` at Changi Airport were sold out until Dec. 28, reflecting appetite among Singapore residents for creative distractions that have included flights and cruises limited to the country`s airspace and waters.

Actor Henry Winkler says he started writing childrens books about learning challenges because he also has the same problem.

"I started writing books for children about learning challenges because I have the same. Once I started writing, it was easy for me to remember what it felt like to be eight and fail all the time," Winkler said in an episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show".

When Barrymore brought up the importance of being empathetic to everyone, the actor-comedian said: "During my first act on stage, at break time, I had no one to tell me where to go and I felt really alone. I swore, I would never let anybody on a set that I was on, feel that way ever again."

Recalling her first meeting with the star, Barrymore said: "When I met you for the first time when I was young, you changed my life forever because `The Fonz`, the most important man on the planet was nice to me. I would clock the way you treated people and there was something about your kindness that made me think that was the marching order of life."

Winkler was accompanied by "MasterChef" judge Aaron Sanchez and singer Nico Santos on the show. "The Drew Barrymore Show" airs on Zee Cafe in India.

During winters, the resultant heat loss demands compensatory strategies resulting in increased food intake for its thermic effect. Cold weather leads to a drop in our body temperature, stimulating our appetites. This is because intake of food helps to generate internal heat, subsequently leading to a rise in body temperature.

Shweta Mahadik, Clinical Dietician, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan shares a list of some nutritious and easily available ingredients which are a must in winters:

TIL SEEDS (SESAME): Til seeds are super foods that should be part of your diet during winter. They are full of good fats mainly Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) that reduces blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and plays an important role in preventing cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Regular intake of Til seeds makes the body warm and it is a winter super food. It also contains active, and health promoting phytochemicals such as Sesamin, Sesamolin, Tocopherols, Phytosterols, Phytates and other Phenolics which lowers the risk of diseases by strengthening the immune system.

Til is also rich in Calcium and keeps the bones strong. The Zinc helps to strengthen the bones and increase bone density. It also contains Magnesium which helps to maintain normal blood pressure levels. Til can be consumed in the form of: Til ladoo, Til chikki, Til poli also in the form of chutney, and roasted til seeds can be sprinkled in salads

During winters, some people are more susceptible to catching common diseases cold and flu, coughs, respiratory ailments, sinusitis etc. Having Jaggery in your diet is a very good option during winter - as a cleansing agent. It cleanses the lungs, stomach, intestines, respiratory tract, and esophagus. Jaggery is far complex than sugar, as it is made up of Sucrose. It is rich in minerals like Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron etc. Some studies found that Jaggery digests slower than sugar, and releases energy slowly - not spontaneously. This provides energy for a longer time which makes the body warm. the minerals and antioxidants in Jaggery can support the immune system and help people recover from illnesses like the common cold and the flu. Have Groundnut chikki, dryfruits ladoo, Gulpapadi, Groundnut ladoo, Halim ladoo, Gulpoli, Jaggery and dates chutney, etc.

GINGER TEA: On a cold morning, most of us enjoy Ginger tea. However, Ginger does a lot than just adding a hint of flavour to your favourite beverage or dishes. In traditional Chinese medicine, Ginger is used for its warming effect. Ginger increases body temperature, which is ideal if you are suffering from a cold. It can be used for throat infections and to relieve congestion in Sinusitis. Consumption of Ginger reduces cold and conquers a dry, irritating cough by increasing human Bronchial Smooth Muscle Cell (BSMC) migration and proliferation and reversing phthalate ester-mediated airway remodelling. Gingerol, which is a major bioactive compound found in Ginger is capable of preventing Asthma. Some studies reveal that Ginger has many therapeutic properties, including antibiotic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Have Ginger tea, Ginger kadha, Ginger wadi, add Ginger in soups & veggies, and in chilli pickles, etc.
Gigi Hadid used the few days of freedom getting a hair cut. The supermodel and new mom shared a selfie on her Instagram revealing her new hair as she sat sans makeup inside her home. The 25-year-old sported a wispy fringe framing her face while watching the snowfall from inside the comfort of her cosy New York City apartment. Gigi looked at ease while relaxing on her couch in Manhattan after a busy day out with her newborn daughter and sister Bella. She threw it back to the '90s with a short-sleeved white blouse with a small collar and two tortoiseshell buttons. Hadid added a host of golden necklaces to match a pair of sparkling hoop earrings fastened to her ears. She simply captioned the snap: 'Fresh snow fresh cut.'
From safety and effectiveness to who should use sunscreen and how to apply it, Canadian dermatologists review the latest evidence and guidelines on the use of sunscreen.

The review, published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), recommends that everyone older than six months of age should use sunscreen to protect against skin cancer. Most skin cancers develop because of long-term sun exposure. Sunscreen reduces the risk of developing skin cancer by blocking solar radiation through chemical or physical sunscreen filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

"Exposure to ultraviolet radiation is directly harmful and has been associated with the development of skin cancers, which are common in Canada. High-quality evidence has shown that sunscreen reduces the risk of developing both melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer," writes Dr Megan Sander, a dermatologist and clinical lecturer at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, with coauthors.

Some key points:-

Prevention

Evidence from randomized controlled trials indicates that sunscreen is effective at protecting against skin cancer as well as premature ageing of the skin.

Non-White populations

There is a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of sunscreen in people with darker skin. Current evidence is mostly limited to White people, who have a higher rate of skin cancers.

Babies

Sun avoidance and protective clothing are recommended for babies. Sunscreen is not recommended for use before age 6 months because of the potential for systemic absorption of sunscreen ingredients.

SPF

Sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher are recommended in cream or lotion format. Spray-on sunscreens are not recommended as they can be dispersed, are flammable and their effects if inhaled are unknown.

Harms

Some people can have skin reactions such as contact dermatitis, especially to chemical sunscreens, and there is evidence these sunscreens can be systemically absorbed, although the clinical importance of the absorption is not known.

Environmental impact

Recent evidence indicates that chemical sunscreens can be detected in water and fish and may contribute to the bleaching of coral reefs. "Sunscreen is only one part of a comprehensive photoprotection strategy. It is important to counsel patients regarding behaviours for avoiding ultraviolet radiation, including the use of wide-brimmed hats, eye protection (e.g., "wrap-around" sunglasses with ultraviolet radiation protection) and seeking shade when the ultraviolet index is above 3 (usually 11 am-3 pm, April to September in Canada)," write the authors.

Research into the safety of sunscreens and of new technologies continues.

Including more wine and cheese, in diet, may help reduce cognitive decline, suggest the findings of a new study. Daily consumption of alcohol, particularly red wine, is related to improvements in cognitive function. Weekly consumption of lamb improves long-term cognitive prowess.

Excessive consumption of salt is bad, but only individuals already at risk for Alzheimer`s Disease may need to watch their intake to avoid cognitive problems over time. These are some of the most significant findings of a study by Iowa State University, highlighted in an article published in the Journal of Alzheimer`s Disease.

The study, spearheaded by principal investigator Auriel Willette, an Assistant Professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition Department, and Brandon Klinedinst, a neuroscience PhD candidate, is a first-of-its-kind large scale analysis that connects specific foods to later-in-life cognitive acuity.

Willette, Klinedinst and their team analysed data collected from 1,787 ageing adults (46 to 77 years of age) in the United Kingdom through the UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing in-depth genetic and health information from half-a-million participants. The database is globally accessible to approved researchers undertaking vital research into the world`s most common and life-threatening diseases.

Participants completed a Fluid Intelligence Test (FIT) through touchscreen questionnaire at baseline (compiled between 2006 and 2010) and then in two follow-up assessments (conducted from 2012 through 2013 and again between 2015 and 2016). The FIT analysis provides an in-time snapshot of an individual`s ability to "think on the fly."Participants also answered questions about their food and alcohol consumption at baseline and through two follow-up assessments.

The Food Frequency Questionnaire asked the participants about their intake of fresh fruit, dried fruit, raw vegetables and salad, cooked vegetables, oily fish, lean fish, processed meat, poultry, beef, lamb, pork, cheese, bread, cereal, tea and coffee, beer, cider, red wine, white wine, champagne and other forms of liquor."I was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that responsibly eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current COVID-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down," Willette said. "While we took into account whether this was just due to what well-off people eat and drink, randomised clinical trials are needed to determine if making easy changes in our diet could help our brains in significant ways.

"Klinedinst added depending on their genetic factors, some individuals seem to be more protected from the effects of Alzheimer`s, while others seem to be at greater risk. "That said, I believe the right food choices can prevent the disease and cognitive decline altogether. Perhaps the silver bullet we`re looking for is upgrading how we eat. Knowing what that entails contributes to a better understanding of Alzheimer`s and put this disease in a reverse trajectory."

Significantly increased use of social media in youth may lead to developing of depression within six months, suggest the findings of a new study.Young adults who increased their use of social media were significantly more likely to develop depression within six months, according to a new national study.

The study was authored by Dr Brian Primack, dean of the College of Education and Health Professions and professor of public health at the University of Arkansas.Compared with participants who used less than 120 minutes per day of social media, for example, young adults who used more than 300 minutes per day were 2.8 times as likely to become depressed within six months.

The study, which will be published online December 10 and is scheduled for the February 2021 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, is the first large, national study to show a link between social media use and depression over time." Most prior work in this area has left us with the chicken-and-egg question," said Primack.

"We know from other large studies that depression and social media users tend to go together, but it`s been hard to figure out which came first. This new study sheds light on these questions because high initial social media use led to increased rates of depression. However, initial depression did not lead to any change in social media use," added Primack. In 2018, Primack and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh sampled more than 1,000 U.S. adults between 18 to 30.

They measured depression using the validated nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire and asked participants about the amount of time they used social media on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, and SnapChat.Their analyses controlled for demographic factors like age, sex, race, education, income and employment, and they included survey weights so the results would reflect the greater U.S. population.

"One reason for these findings may be that social media takes up a lot of time," said Dr. Cesar Escobar-Viera, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and co-author on the study."Excess time on social media may displace forming more important in-person relationships, achieving personal or professional goals, or even simply having moments of valuable reflection," added Escobar-Viera.

The authors suggest that social comparison may also underlie these findings." Social media is often curated to emphasise positive portrayals," said Jaime Sidani, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and co-author of the study."This can be especially difficult for young adults who are at critical junctures in life-related to identity development and feel that they can`t measure up to the impossible ideals they are exposed to," Sidani added. The findings are of particular importance given that depression was recently declared to be the leading global cause of disability by the World Health Organization and accounts for more disability-adjusted life-years than all other mental disorders."These findings are also particularly important to consider in the age of COVID-19," Primack said."Now that it`s harder to connect socially in person, we`re all using more technology like social media.

While I think those technologies certainly can be valuable, I`d also encourage people to reflect on which tech experiences are truly useful for them and which ones leave them feeling empty," added Primack.

Excessive use of social media maybe linked to developing depression, suggests study

Art portraying French revolutionaries replaced with cartoon cats and birds might not be controversial in many countries, but it is a potentially touchy subject for Thailand`s monarchy.

For artist Yuree Kensaku, 40, the political environment is a factor shaping her work as protesters call for reform of the monarchy alongside other changes.

"People have started their political awakening," said Yuree, whose latest works are being shown at the Bangkok Art Biennale.

Her art melds her Thai background with her experience as a resident artist in La Rochelle, France, where she was inspired by historical works portraying times of revolution.

Talk of revolution is sensitive in Thailand, where royalists accuse protesters of seeking to bring down the monarchy with their calls for reforms to curb its powers - an accusation that protest leaders reject. The protesters seek to remove Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former junta leader, and demand a new constitution.

Yuree, who is half-Thai and half-Japanese but was born and raised in Bangkok, said Western and Thai contexts were different and she did not intend to send a message about the monarchy through her work.

"We must learn about the past to understand the present but I`m not saying that we have to go that way necessarily," she said. "I don`t think our country will reach the point of abolition but reforms should be possible."

The central figure of one large art piece bearing the head of a chicken, echoes Eugene Delacroix`s painting "Liberty Leading the People", with a woman representing Liberty holding up the tricolour flag, in a commemoration of France`s July Revolution of 1830.

The title "Blue, Blanc, Rouge" contrasts the French and Thai flags, which use the same blue, white and red colours to represent different things: freedom, equality and fraternity for France. In Thailand, the same colours stand for monarchy, religion and nation.

The other work by Yuree on display at the biennale is a sculpture titled "Broken Victoria", modelled on the Winged Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre.

The work, with the head of a cat with green hair and a broken wing, is recreated as another revolutionary flag bearer. The white ribbon tied around its waist refers to a symbol of the Thai protests, Yuree said.

"In order to achieve victory you have to fight for it and it`s not going to be easy," she said. "You can get bruised and battered."

Yuree said the oblique symbolism in her work, with meaning often shrouded within the piece, made it possible to exhibit in public without risk of trouble from the authorities in a country where insulting the monarchy can lead to a 15-year jail sentence.

"The nature of my work is already self-censoring because it is hiding the truth behind it. It`s less risky than other artists out there," she said.

It`s that time of the year when you say hello to all your jackets, hoodies and warm clothes. Winter is finally here and so are your winter skincare routines. Though people often wonder why they need to wear sunscreen during the winter if they are not exposed to the bright sun.

Having said so, it is wrongly believed that the sunscreen is more of an option than a necessity during the winter months. While we conveniently associate cold weather with dry skin and windburns, most people are unaware that the winter UV rays can be every bit as damaging as the summer sun.

Megha Asher, Co-founder and COO of Juicy Chemistry, explains: "The ozone layer acts as Earth`s sun-shield and absorbs harmful UV rays. The ozone layer is actually at its thinnest in the winter. Windburn and sunburn also act in unison during the rough winter months. The freezing temperatures and vicious winds that leave your skin dry and agitated allow for UV rays to have a better shot at your skin."

Wearing sunscreen on exposed skin, especially when the sun`s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will keep you protected from these damaging rays, she says.

If you`re planning to be outdoors applying sunscreen is very important. For adequate protection, select broad-spectrum sunscreens and lip balms with a minimum of 30 SPF with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the active ingredient, for those looking for a chemical-free, reef-safe option, choose sunscreens, Asher suggests.

As there is less humidity in the winters, your skin is constantly stripped of moisture. Dryness reveals every wrinkle and a fine line in the skin`s surface, and it makes your skin more likely to crack or tear, exposing you to infection risk. Using sunscreen in the winter can help restore some of your skin`s depleted moisture, she says.

"Having said that the sun`s rays are known to accelerate the skin`s ageing process. Sunscreens protect skin from the sun`s rays and add moisture back into dry skin, addressing two concerns at once. The daily application of the right sunscreen slows the ageing process and making the skin looking more youthful."

The majority of UV exposure in our entire life is UVA which contributes to skin cancer and premature ageing. We are exposed to UVA rays every time we step out of our house. UVA penetrates through clouds and also window glass, therefore it is imperative to wear sunscreen even when your indoors, Asher points out.

This season be ready with your healthy and ever-glowing skin with the right sunscreen to bring that winter glow!
Why using sunscreen is important during winters

It's the season of cold and cold waves. Winter is harsh on our skin — harsh winds, indoor heating, cold rain — and there's nothing worse than being constantly dry, flaky and uncomfortable.

So here's an easy guide to getting your best, most hydrated, and healthy shin, to endure the winters and still be its glowing self.

Cleanse your skin

Clean your skin with a cream or oil-based cleanser as foaming or soap-based formulas can be too harsh on Winter skin.

Exfoliate the layer

Sloughing off your dead skin cells helps to increase circulation and encourage cell turnover.

Serum is a must

A hydrating serum will deeply moisturise your skin, the small molecules allow for more penetration and therefore hydrate more than just the top layer of your skin.

Sunscreen should never be forgotten

Even in winter, you must wear some SPF. Clouds and rain don't stop UV rays coming through and damaging your skin.

Night-time nourishment

Stepping up your moisturiser in Winter can give you extra nourishment. Use an even thicker, richer formula at night when your skin is in rejuvenation mode.

Protect that skin

Using a barrier cream for any extra sensitive bits (think dry nose), will stop the Winter cold and wind from doing more damage.

Lip-care is required

Keeping a lipbalm in your pocket, car and handbag for constant applications will keep chapped, dry lips at bay.

Lock in water

As soon as you jump out of your shower or bath, towel dry and apply your moisturiser quick-smart. This will help the moisture stay on and in your skin.

Turn down the temperature

A hot shower or bath seems like one of Winter's most sought after luxuries, but don't make it too scalding, hot water actually dries out your skin more.

Care for feet and hands

Don't forget your extremities! Slather on a rich moisturiser and then slip on some socks and gloves before hitting the hay for a deeply nourishing treat.

Tips to keep your skin healthy during harsh winter season

In an analysis of women with early breast cancer, black women had higher rates of obesity and other health conditions that can affect survival, compared with white women. The findings are published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Obesity is a known risk factor for various cancers, and its rise over the past few decades has contributed to a rise in breast cancer rates that is greater in Black women than white women.

At the same time, as breast cancer mortality rates have declined, the decline has been less pronounced in black women, producing a 40 per cent mortality gap.To investigate further, Kirsten Nyrop, PhD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her colleagues analysed information concerning 548 patients treated at their hospital for early breast cancer.

The team found that 62 per cent of black patients and 33 per cent of white patients fell within the obese weight range, and higher percentages of black women had obesity-related comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol than white women.

Yet, despite significant differences in the prevalence of obesity and comorbidities, there were no differences between black and white patients in treatment decisions with regard to the type of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or endocrine therapy."Early breast cancer is highly treatable, and survival rates have improved steadily due to treatment advances and early detection through mammograms; however, the high rates of obesity, overall comorbidities, and obesity-related comorbidities observed among women with early breast cancer--especially among black women--can contribute to disparities in overall survival of these patients," said Dr Nyrop.

"Findings from this study need to be considered within the larger context of the cancer-obesity link and the disparate impact of the obesity epidemic on communities of colour in the United States," added Dr Nyrop. Dr Nyrop noted that rates of many cancers that are impacted by obesity are higher in Black women as are rates of numerous obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension."As the COVID-19 pandemic has glaringly underscored, there is an urgent need to address the systemic and socioeconomic aspects of obesity that disproportionately affect minority communities in the US if we are to reverse health disparities," added Dr Nyrop.

An accompanying editorial stresses that clinicians should "take advantage of the breast cancer diagnosis as an opportunity for interventions that can be far-reaching."The authors note that several lifestyle interventions can not only address obesity but also potentially prolong survival in patients with cancer.

Art Basel is typically one of the busiest times for Miami, and the jolt could not have come at a worse time for this tourism-and-hospitality driven city hit hard by COVID-19.
