India and Australia are set to lock horns in a five-match Test series, i.e. the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting later this year Down Under. Notably, this will be the first time since the 1991-92 season that the two heavyweights will square off to play five Tests in a series. Ahead of the marquee series, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting made a bold early claim, backing Pat Cummis & Co. to beat India 3-1 and reclaim the BG Trophy for the first time since 2014-15.

'Australia's got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia'

Ponting told ICC Review Show, "It's going to be a competitive series and as I said I think Australia's got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia on the back of what's happened the last the last two series here. We are back to five Tests as well, which is the other really important thing about this series. It’s only been four Tests the last couple of times. Five tests, I think everyone's really excited by that and I don't know if there'd be too many drawn games."

He added, "I'm obviously going to tip Australia to win and I'm never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I'm going to say 3-1 to Australia."

England Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland could explore the opportunity to represent as one nation at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Talks are still at the initial stage as both nations could combine to represent Team Great Britain at the Los Angeles Games in 2028. With four years still to go, there is a firm belief that Scottish and English players could come together to form Team Great Britain at the Los Angeles Games where cricket will return to the list of games after an absence of 128 years.

It is worth noting that, at the Olympics, England and Scotland are not represented separately instead Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) form the core of the team. While not many cricketers are expected to come from Wales, both Scotland and England could be represented heavily if either team meets the qualification criteria (yet to be revealed).

BGT 2024-25: '3-1 to....,' Ricky Ponting makes BRAVE early prediction for India vs Australia five-Test series

Former India team coach Rahul Dravid has praised current skipper Rohit Sharma after enjoying a stellar spell in the last three years. Dravid, who became the coach in 2021, had seen Rohit as his captain for the entire tenure as they achieved success on multiple fronts. During the duo's successful spell, India won the T20 World Cup and were runners-up in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.

Dravid praises Rohit

"I believe the teams are really led by the group of senior players, led by the captain. So, I think it was a privilege to work with Rohit. In these two and a half years, I think he was a fantastic leader. People really gravitated towards him, the team. I think that makes a big difference,” Dravid told Star Sports.

The duo’s finest achievement was the T20 World Cup success in June when India ended the 17-year drought to clinch the title. The win was also the only ICC title India won during Dravid’s tenure as coach. Overall, the national team enjoyed a successful spell and was praised for the style of play in the three years Dravid was in charge.

The T20 World Cup win was Dravid’s last tournament as coach after which he stepped down from his role.

Start of a new era

With Dravid’s departure, the Indian cricket team started a new reign as Rohit along with Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the T20I format. Ravindra Jadeja too later joined them with youngsters getting promoted in the T20I format. Dravid praises Rohit "I believe the teams are really led by the group of senior players, led by the captain.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that players should be dropped, whether seniors or juniors, if they are not performing well in the side. Harbhajan made the comments on the topic of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future with the Indian cricket team.

Both the batters had recently announced retirement from 20-over cricket after taking India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. Both players will next be seen in home Test against Bangladesh next month after playing in ODI series against Sri Lanka early this month.

"Red ball cricket, you really need these two guys to play a little bit more than what people are asking. You need experience in all formats whether its limited overs cricket and Test cricket. Selectors need to see, that if someone is not performing well, they should be dropped. Whether they are senior player or juniors," Harbhajan said in a conversation with new agency PTI.

The former cricketer also said both the senior batters, who are in their mid-thirties, have a lot of cricket left in them.

“Rohit can easily play for two more years. You never know with Virat Kohli's fitness, you can see him competing for five years. He is probably the fittest guy in the team,” he said.

“You ask any 19-year-old competing with Virat (on fitness). Virat will beat him. He is that fit. I believe Virat and Rohit have a lot of cricket left in them and it is entirely up to them. If they are fit enough, they are performing and the team is winning, they should continue to play. As simple as that,” the spinner added.

India's next assignment is home Test and T20I series against Bangladesh. They will be playing three T20Is and two Tests with the tour kicking off with first Test starting on September 19.

'It’s finally time....' Aussie Marnus Labuschange on his 2023 ODI World Cup final prized possession

Former England captain Graham Thorpe passed away last week. The 55-year-old played 100 Tests and 82 ODIs, scoring 6744 and 2380 runs, respectively. The England and Wales Cricket Board said on X, "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham’s death. More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world." However, his family has revealed that Thorpe committed suicide, succumbing to his battle against depression.

'He really did believe that we would be better off without him'

Thorpe left behind his wife Amanda and their two daughters Kitty, 22, and Emma, 19, as well as his first wife Nicky and their two children, Henry and Amelia. Amanda told The Times, "Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life."

Amanda further opined, "For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit."

"Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work," she added.

Thorpe's daughter Kitty stated, "We are not ashamed of talking about it. There is nothing to hide and it is not a stigma. We were trying to help him get better before and trying to protect him, which is why we said nothing. This is the time now to share the news, however, horrible it is. 'He really did believe that we would be better off without him' Thorpe left behind his wife Amanda and their two daughters Kitty, 22, and Emma, 19, as well as his first wife Nicky and their two children, Henry and Amelia. Amanda told The Times, "Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life." Amanda further opined, "For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit." "Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work," she added.
The first Test between West Indies and South Africa ended in a draw, at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Sunday (Aug 11). The two-match Test series opener was a riveting affair where Temba Bavuma-led Proteas set a challenging 298-run target on the final day as Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies ended at 201-5. The rain did enough damage in the opening Test to not allow a result in the contest, however, it showed a lot of fight from both teams.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has said that the pitches in Sri Lanka were tough to bat on. The comments come after India lost the three-match ODI series 0-2 with the first ODI being tied.
Karthik was responding to a question about India batter Virat Kohli's lack of runs and LBW dismissal in the series when he made the comments. Kohli scored 24 runs in the first ODI while managing only 14 and 20 runs in the next two games.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has compared the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the Ashes as he made a bold statement on the upcoming series between the nations on Saturday (Aug 10). India will face Australia in a five-match Test series later in the year as the nations compete in a repeat of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final. The two nations are top contenders to reach the 2025 WTC final but a lot will depend on the outcome of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Nick Hockley makes a bold comment on BGT

“The Border Gavaskar Trophy and the Ashes are both massive tours on the Australian cricket calendar and are largely comparable in commercial terms, with fantastic crowds and huge broadcast audiences for each. Ticket sales from India are already six times greater than for the previous non-COVID series,” Hockley told Hindustan Times.

The series will start on November 22 as the sides will square off the first Test match in Perth. It will also break the tradition of a four-match series as it will move into a five-match cycle starting from the upcoming tour. This will mean that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be in power with the Ashes as both tournaments will consist of the same number of matches.

The series will be new coach Gautam Gambhir’s first big test away from home as he tries stamping authority on the side. Gambhir took over as the coach of the side during the Sri Lanka tour where India lost the ODI series 2-0 while they had earlier won the T20I series 3-0.

The tour is likely to be Rohit Sharma’s last away assignment as captain (unless they reach the WTC final) in the Test format. It is also likely to be Virat Kohli’s last away tour to Australia in the Test format as he reaches the twilight of his career. He did not participate in the entire Test series having opted to return to India for paternity leave. Ajinkya Rahane would then help India win the series Down Under in 2020-21 while Ravi Shastri was still the coach.

IND vs AUS: Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley compares BGT to Ashes, says 'it has same commercial value'

On Wednesday (Aug 8), Rohit Sharma-led India lost the third and final ODI versus hosts Sri Lanka, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, to lose the three-match series 2-0. Bangladesh unrest: SHOCKING! Former captain Mashrafe Mortaza's house set on fire as country in chaos

Rohit Sharma-led India lost to Sri Lanka by 32 runs in the second and penultimate ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday (Aug 4). Chasing 241, India were 97 for no loss before the visitors collapsed in the run-chase courtesy of Jeffrey Vandersay's 6 for 33. The defeat came as a shock to many, given the strong start given by the Indian openers. It became the second successive instance where India's middle-order struggled to capitalise on a good start and fell flat in the ongoing three ODIs. After the match, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was asked if this was a 'shock defeat'. He stated that the loss was no less than a surprise.

At the post-match presser, Nayar said, "Was it a shock? I would say yes, there is a surprise. But you anticipate and understand that in these conditions, the game can turn on its head because there is so much spin on offer. Even if you look at the last game, it was relatively easy to score against the new ball. As the ball got older, the conditions when batting second got slightly tougher. Sometimes, in tough conditions, especially in the 50-over format, this happens."

I feel today we should give more credit to Sri Lanka."

With enough on offer for the spinners, Indian batters will have to apply themselves in the middle and try to get a win in the series decider.
