Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant fast bowler Milan Rathnayake both made fine fifties as Sri Lanka recovered from a dramatic top-order collapse on the opening day of the first Test against England at Old Trafford Wednesday.

Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 6-3 after skipper De Silva won the toss, losing their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

Yet they recovered to 236 all out, De Silva top-scoring with 74 and tailender Rathnayake, with only his third first-class fifty, close behind in making 72.

The pair checked England's progress during an eighth-wicket partnership of 63, with no other Sri Lanka batsman making more than Kusal Mendis's 24.

Chris Woakes struck twice in an over on his way to 3-32 in 11 overs. &nbsp;

De Silva's impressive innings ended when he turned a quicker ball from off-spinner Shoaib Bashir straight to Dan Lawrence at leg slip, with the 20-year-old taking 3-55 in 23 overs.

Ben Duckett and Lawrence, recalled in place of the injured Zak Crawley, guided England to 22-0 before bad light ended play for the day at 5:52 pm (1652 GMT).

Sri Lanka's initial collapse ensured a dream start for stand-in England captain Ollie Pope, leading his country for the first time after Ben Stokes was ruled out with a torn hamstring.

The tourists came into their first Test in England in eight years on the back of just a solitary warm-up fixture -- a defeat by the second-string England Lions -- with De Silva insisting Tuesday that Sri Lanka had wanted at least one more game before the series started.

"The conditions are quite different to Asian countries," he said. "We wanted to play a few matches, but that's what we get."

<h2>Stunning slump</h2>

Sri Lanka's collapse began in the sixth over when Dimuth Karunaratne top-edged a hook off fast bowler Gus Atkinson to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Woakes then took two wickets in the next over, with Nishan Madushka, the other opening batsman, driving loosely at an outswinger and edging to Joe Root at first slip as he fell for four.

Five balls later, Angelo Mathews was plumb lbw for a duck, playing no shot to a Woakes delivery that nipped back off the pitch.

Mendis was undone by express fast bowler Mark Wood, with Mendis gloving a superb 93 mph (150 km/h) delivery that reared up from short of a length to second slip.

De Silva, however, pulled Atkinson for a commanding four and completed an impressively quick fifty off just 56 balls.

He was reprieved on 65, when Smith missed a difficult stumping chance off Bashir, but was out shortly afterwards to leave Sri Lanka 176-8.

But the 28-year-old Rathnayake, undaunted by the loss of his skipper, went on to score a 96-ball fifty in style when the left-handed batsman drove Bashir for a straight six that also took Sri Lanka past 200.

With the floodlights piercing increasingly gloomy skies, Pope turned to part-time spinner Root in a bid to snatch a wicket at a time when deploying the fast bowlers might have seen the umpires halt play for bad light.

Rathnayake, however, responded by launching Root for six over long-off. He also drove Bashir through extra cover before hitting him to Woakes at mid-on.&nbsp;

Before play started, there was a minute's applause in honour of Graham Thorpe, the former England batsman and assistant coach, with both teams, as well as the match officials, wearing black armbands in his honour.

Thorpe died, aged 55, earlier this month after being hit by a train. His wife, Amanda, confirmed he had taken his own life after suffering from depression for several years.

ENG vs SL, 1st Test: Dhananjaya de Silva, Milan Rathnayake revive Sri Lanka after batting collapse

Pakistan skipper Shan Masood's dismissal on day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh on Wednesday (Aug 21) in Rawalpindi left him furious. Masood was given out caught behind in the seventh over of the inning but the ball didn't hit the bat.

Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam bowled a good length ball, which squared Masood, and he was given out on the field. The batter promptly asked for a review, but much to his dismay, third umpire Michael Gough gave him out in a jiffy. Upon replay, it was visible that the ball had hit the pad and not the bat. Only 41 overs were possible on a day marred by rain and Bangladesh did make good use of bowler-friendly conditions early on before Pak struck balance.

The home side made a horrible start, losing three wickets for 16 runs before Saim Ayub (56) and Shakeel added 98 runs for the fourth wicket. After Ayub's departure, Mohammad Rizwan (24 not out) continued to lead rebuilding for Pakistan as they ended day on 157/4.

During the play, Saud Shakeel equalled 65-year-old record in country's Test batting history.&nbsp;

Shakeel reached 1000 runs in Test cricket in his 20th innings of 11th Test - the joint fastest for Pakistan, along with Saeed Ahmed, who had made the record back in 1959 in same number of innings of 11 Tests.

On his way to equalling history, Shakeel surpassed Pak great Javed Miandad, who had scored 1000 Test runs in 23 innings of 14 Tests. He also went ahead of second-placed Sadiq Mohammad, who had reached 1000 test runs in 22 innings of the first 13 games he had played.

PAK vs BAN 1st Test: Pakistan skipper Shan Masood FURIOUS after controversial out decision - WATCH

India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that the focus to do well outside India is one of the reasons that ability to play spin has taken a back seat. Doeschate made the comments while speaking to TalkSport Cricket after India's recent ODI series loss in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

India lost the ODI series 2-0 after the first match ended in a tie - the first ODI series loss against Sri Lanka since 1997. They lost 27 wickets to spin in three matches - the most by any team in history.

"One of the challenges I wasn't expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters," ten Doeschate said. "We got undone in Sri Lanka."

The assistant coach and former Dutch player also elaborated on his thoughts, saying: "The mindset of India has been such that they've been so desperate to do well overseas. The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England [so] that we've kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength of the Indian team, fall back a little bit."

Doeschate, meanwhile, said that he's looking forward to help the batters with spin during the upcoming assignment - two-Test series against Bangladesh and three-Test series against New Zealand - both at home.

"That's one thing I'm looking forward to helping with, getting to that position where Indians are the best players of spin in the world again," said assistant coach.

"I don't think much of what we're going to bring is technical knowledge to these guys. It's more about mindsets, situational awareness, how we think they can control certain phases of the game," he added.

"[It's about] throwing ideas out there, de-briefing and keeping the mental space really good. That's going to be really important."

Doeschate is one of two assistant coaches of India along with Abhishek Nayar under new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

PAK vs BAN, 1st Test: Saud Shakeel equals 65-year-old Test batting record in Pakistan history

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has confirmed his choice for India's opening slot for the 2025 Champions Trophy, to be held in Pakistan early next year. After the ODI series loss to Sri Lanka, early this month, Rohit Sharma-led India have only three more ODIs -- versus England at home -- ahead of the next ICC event. Thus, Karthik believes India will stick to their tried-and-tested opening pair of Rohit and Shubman Gill, with Yashasvi Jaiswal as an backup option.

Karthik explained his choice&nbsp;on&nbsp;Cricbuzz and said, "Why? Rohit and Shubman are a very good combination. Yes, Jaiswal has a great opportunity to be the backup opener and will get his opportunity soon if Shubman doesn't go as well as expected. And India has a very solid middle order as well."

"In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, they are just going to be playing three more games. And I am pretty confident it's going to be Rohit and Shubman opening for the Champions Trophy," he added.

Gill and Rohit have forged a successful opening pair in&nbsp;ODIs (with Jaiswal partnering Hitman at the top in whites). The duo opened the innings for India in the 2023 home ODI World Cup, where the Men in Blue ended as the runners-up. In the ODI WC, Rohit ended with 597 runs and Gill managed 354 runs despite missing the initial games due to dengue. The pair managed to put up four 50-plus stands and one century partnership.

Talking about Jaiswal, the southpaw&nbsp;has&nbsp;scored 1,028&nbsp;runs in 9 Tests, including three tons, and 723 runs at a strike-rate of 164.31&nbsp;in 23 T20Is. However, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter is yet to make his ODI debut. Given he was part of Rohit-led India's victorious 2024 T20 WC squad, he is likely to continue as a backup opener at the forthcoming Champions Trophy.

India are placed in Group A along with hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand whereas Group B comprises South Africa, Afghanistan, Australia and England.

Champions Trophy 2025: Dinesh Karthik picks his Indian openers, no place for RR star

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the BCCI for India's lack of preparations heading into the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), to be held in Australia. The five-match Test series is set to get underway on Nov 22, in Perth, and the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team will head into the marquee series after playing just one practice game, i.e. a two-day affair at Manuka Oval, Canberra. Hence, this has left Little Master Gavaskar worried given Australia are looking to regain the BGT for the first time since 2014.

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "The news that the regular match for touring teams against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI has been reduced to a 2-day game is a disappointing one. By all means, rest the seniors and let them not even travel to Canberra for the game but give the newer younger players a proper first-class game rather than a 2-day game which will be neither here nor there. After all, the team are going there to play cricket and not to take rest."

<h2>'There's still time to change it to a 3-day game'</h2>

Gavaskar further insisted, "The Australians are thirsting for revenge and the Indians will have to be razor sharp to get a hat-trick of series wins there. There's still time to change it to a 3-day game and give the younger inexperienced players a better chance to succeed against the World Test Champions. C'mon BCCI, you can do it."

Pat Cummins-led Australia are desperate to win their first-ever BGT since 2014/15 edition, at home. Since then, Aussies have lost two away and home series each to their fierce rivals India.&nbsp;

Rohit-led India will have to be on their toes to make it three successive Test series win on Australian soil by winning the forthcoming BGT. However, it won't be an easy task against the reigning Test world champions.

After all, the team are going there to play cricket and not to take rest." Also read: 'Get back to the high standards...': Sunil Gavaskar questions Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma missing Duleep Trophy 'There's still time to change it to a 3-day game' Gavaskar further insisted, "The Australians are thirsting for revenge and the Indians will have to be razor sharp to get a hat-trick of series wins there. There's still time to change it to a 3-day game and give the younger inexperienced players a better chance to succeed against the World Test Champions. C'mon BCCI, you can do it." Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting believes that India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is currently the best all-format bowler in the world. Ponting made the comments after Bumrah's Player of Tournament performance in the recently-concluded 2024 T20 World Cup. India won the tournament and Bumrah took 15 wickets at an economy of 4.17.

"I've said it for a long time, he's probably been the best multi-format bowler there's been in world cricket for the last five or six years,” Ponting said while talking to ICC Review.

“And when you talk to opposition batsmen about him (Bumrah) in particular, it's always, 'No, he's a nightmare! You never know what's going to happen. One's going to swing, one's going to seam, he's going to bowl an in-swinger, he's going to bowl an out-swinger. And the consistency is there'.”

“So when you've got that skillset and the consistency that he has, then you're going to be a great player," he added.

The former Australia skipper also said that Bumrah has come back better since his lower back injury in 2022.

“There might have been some fears a couple of years ago when the injuries come in and ‘would he come back the same?’, but I think he's actually come back better,” Ponting said.

“If I watch what he did in the T20 World Cup – the pace is still there, there's nothing that's changed with the accuracy or what he can deliver. The skillset is all the same. He's getting better year on year. So, he would rank right up there.”

Bumrah would be a key bowler for India when they tour Australia in November later this year for a five-Test series. for a possible third Test consecutive series win Down Under.

England’s stand-in skipper Ollie Pope is all set to take charge of his first Test match as the leader of the side when they face Sri Lanka on Wednesday (Aug 21). With Ben Stokes being ruled out of the English summer after injuring his hamstring during The Hundred, Pope was installed as the skipper of the side. However, according to Pope, the current England side is influenced by Stokes but he&nbsp;has been given the license to tweak the team.

<h2>Pope speaks on Stokes</h2>

“I am sat next to [Stokes] in the changing room and it will be great to have him around. It is still Stokesy's team and if I want to lean on him I can, but I think he will let me do my own thing. He will be watching and chat with Baz [Test coach Brendon McCullum] so I can have those conversations in the intervals if I think something needs to change,” Pope said on the eve of the opening Test match against Sri Lanka.

"I know how well he has managed our bowlers, especially, so I have picked his brains on it, but it will be a lot of the same messages with a different voice and in my way."

"It's about not overcomplicating it for me. I think I read the game fairly well and Stokesy and I have often been of the same mindset. As the series goes on, it will let itself out for me,” Pope further added.

India’s Jay Shah could become the leading candidate for the post of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman&nbsp;after current head Greg Barclay withdrew from the race on Tuesday (Aug 20). Shah, the current Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) could become the new chairman if he files a nomination in the coming days. Shah is yet to comment on his stance but with Barclay withdrawing, the Indian administrator remains a firm favourite as the deadline for filing nominations closes on Tuesday (Aug 27).

<h2>Shah to contest elections after Barclay withdraws?</h2>

"ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022," the ICC stated in a media release.

“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”

Speculations are high that Shah could file his nominations before the weekend as he intends to take charge of the apex cricketing body in the world. Unlike the BCCI President, where a candidate must have played international cricket, ICC does not have specific criteria making Shah eligible for the chairman’s position. The role of the chairman is to chair the directors of the ICC during its meeting with equal power given to members after the President’s position was abolished in 2016.

Shah, if he files nomination before the deadline of Aug 27 and becomes the chairman of the ICC will join the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012) to have worked in the top office of the ICC. Both Dalmiya and Pawar were the Presidents of the ICC when the term existed.

Ahead of the start of the three-match Test series opener versus Sri Lanka, at Old Trafford, Manchester, Ollie Pope-led&nbsp;England will pay tribute to former batter Graham Thorpe, who passed away&nbsp;early&nbsp;this&nbsp;month. Before the national anthems&nbsp;on Day 1 of the first Test, on Wednesday (Aug 21), England players will remember the celebrated cricketer and&nbsp;a&nbsp;tribute video will also be played on the big screen at the iconic&nbsp;ground.

Notably, Thorpe -- who represented England in 100 Tests and 82 ODIs and ended with&nbsp;6,744 and 2,380 runs respectively -- committed suicide on Aug&nbsp;4 after battling 'major depression and anxiety'. His widow Amanda confirmed that the former English cricketer took his&nbsp;life -- succumbing to injuries sustained after being struck by a train in Surrey --&nbsp;despite his close ones&nbsp;helping him battle mental health issues.

Prior to the Manchester Test versus the Lankans, stand-in captain Pope said, "We'll have our black armbands on throughout the game and there'll be a tribute to him before. It has hurt a lot of people in that changing room. He was a great man. I probably had two or three years playing with him as a batting coach. I really admired him."

While the Ashes&nbsp;is considered the best rivalry in cricketing history, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy *BGT) has also turned out to be one of the most-anticipated Test series in recent times due to India and Australia's fierce rivalry. Ahead of the 2024/25 BGT, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc feels Ashes and the India-Australia Tests are on par with each other, especially since the latter will now be a five-match series.

Speaking to the Wide World Sports website, Starc said, "Being five matches now it's probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team."

Both India and Australia occupy the top two spots, respectively, in the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table, with high chances of meeting once again in the upcoming WTC final (to be held next year). In this regard, many believe the upcoming BGT will be a treat for ardent cricket fans.

Starc stated, "As we're placed at the minute we're the top two teams on the Test ladder... so a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players. "Hopefully when we're sitting there on the 8th of January we have that trophy back on our shores," he&nbsp;further added.

Notably, Australia have not won the BGT since 2014/15 edition, at home. Since then, they lost two successive Test series to India at home, in 2018/19 and 2020/21, whereas also fell behind in Indian conditions in 2016/17 and 2022/23 (all by 2-1 margin). Thus, Pat Cummins-led Aussies will be desperate to settle scores this time around in home conditions.

Rohit Sharma-led India will kick off their away series versus Australia on Nov 22 with the five-match Test series opener at Perth. The five Tests will also comprise a day-night match, in Adelaide, as India will look to retain the BGT for the fifth time in a row.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Adam Gilchrist admits Australia 'under pressure' against India

Pakistan speedster Naseem Shah has opened up on his team’s defeat to India at the T20 World Cup in June as he was left speechless. Speaking on Tuesday (Aug 20) ahead of Pakistan’s home series against Bangladesh, Naseem opened up on the defeat to India where his side was in the driving seat until a late collapse cost them the two points and ultimately a place in the Super 8. After the defeat, the entire Pakistan squad along with Naseem were questioned by the fans for their poor mentality.

<h2>Naseen opens up on defeat to India</h2>

"Though I was not being targeted by the fans or the media, one cannot be satisfied and say I did my bit after your team loses. I am a person who wants to win. I get disappointed even when I lose while playing at home or in my street. I play to win and the World Cup exit pained me a lot," the tearaway fast bowler said Cricbuzz in an interview.

"People come up to me in restaurants and ask me why we lost. Even my relatives have asked about it. I understand their sentiments are driven by social media and, as a player, all I can do is listen to them," he further added.

The Men in Green will now look to stamp their authority over Bangladesh as they take on a two-match Test series which starts on Wednesday (Aug 21). The series will be of huge importance as vital points in the World Test Championship (WTC) will be up for grabs for both sides.

Naseen opens up on defeat to India "Though I was not being targeted by the fans or the media, one cannot be satisfied and say I did my bit after your team loses. Pakistan would later get knocked out of the tournament after they finished third in the group stage. The Men in Green will now look to stamp their authority over Bangladesh as they take on a two-match Test series which starts on Wednesday (Aug 21). The series will be of huge importance as vital points in the World Test Championship (WTC) will be up for grabs for both sides.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has changed the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision comes amid unrest and ousting of the government in Bangladesh. The tournament, however, is scheduled to be played on original dates from October 3-20.

The tournament will be hosted across two venues: Sharjah and Dubai, announced the ICC on Tuesday (Aug 20). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), meanwhile, will continue to host the event, just now in the UAE.

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” the statement added.

Ever since the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government was toppled, the country has been in the midst of political turmoil despite an interim government being named by the Bangladesh Army.

The ICC has been monitoring the situation since the beginning and has even approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as a potential replacement. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had categorically rejected the idea though.

"They [ICC] have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no," Jay Shah said to the Times of India, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "We're in the monsoon, and on top of that, we will host the Women's ODI World Cup next year. I don't want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups.”

Some of the participating countries, including India, Australia, and the UK, had already issued advisories against travelling to Bangladesh amid the unrest.

"We have heard about multiple people, who have ended their lives due to depression. I personally have been there as well. It's heavy, that's how it feels. I have often felt when I was going through clinical depression, to be burden. I was seeking answers," added the former India batter.

Australia batter Steve Smith has denied any plans of retirement from international cricket and instead is hopeful of playing in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as well. The LA 2028 games will see cricket returning to the fold in the shortest format, that is, T20s.

"I don't have any plans," said Smith, as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.&nbsp;

"I'm just enjoying playing at the moment, I'm pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer," he added.

The batter also hoped for wearing the Baggy Green at the next Olympics but would have to do a lot for that to happen. The 35-year-old has been ignored in the shortest format by Australia as he was excluded&nbsp;from the recently concluded 2024 T20 World Cup squad.

Smith, however, has signed a fresh three-year deal with Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), which will ensure he plays in&nbsp;the format till 2026-27 at least.

"I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know," he said. "It's a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I've signed on here for three years so it's only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics."

<h3>Hazlewood desperate to beat India</h3>

Josh Hazlewood, who debuted during Australia's victorious 2014-15 home series win against India, recently claimed that Pat Cummins &amp; Co. are desperate to settle scores versus the Asian giants.

In the 2014/15 series, Australia beat India 2-0. Since then, they have lost all four series (two in India, two at home). India beat Australia in a Test series on Australian soil for the first time in 2018/19 and replicated that feat, sans many key players, in 2020/21.

Tamil Nadu spinner R Sai Kishore thinks he's one of the best spinners in the country at the moment and ready to play Test match cricket. His comments came days before the domestic red-ball tournament Duleep Trophy where he's part of Team B alongside Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Rahul Chahar.

"I feel I am one of the best spinners in the country. Put me in a Test match, I am ready. So, I am not worried too much. Jadeja is there, I have never played alongside him. I have been with him in CSK, but never played together in red-ball format. So, it will be a good learning experience in terms of what he does. In saying that, I feel confident. So, I am ready more than ever," he said while talking to news outlet The Indian Express.

Sai Kishore suffered a season-ending injury at the IPL 2024 after making his side (Gujarat Titans) win with a performance of 4/33. He most recently played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) as a pure batter.&nbsp;

The spinner, however, feels confident of his training and practice done ahead of the Duleep Trophy.

"I feel so confident because I have never trained in the block I have now. Maybe before getting into the IPL, I would have trained like this. Waking up at 4 am, training and then, bowling. I haven't put in as many hours as I have this pre-season in the past four-five years. During the IPL, you don't get time, you focus on recovery. After TNPL, I had a 15-20 day break, and used it to the best," noted Sai Kishore.

'I am one of the best,' YOUNG Tamil Nadu spinner asks to be put in Test matches for India

India's T20I batter Rinku Singh has opened up on his snub from the upcoming Duleep Trophy - domestic red-ball tournament between four teams selected from top Test prospects.

The move from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that Rinku isn't on the selector's radar for a red-ball debut as of now. The left-hand batter, however, seems okay with it and blames his own form for the snub.

"Nothing...I didn't perform that well (in the domestic season). I didn't play many matches in the Ranji Trophy...I played 2-3 matches. I wasn't selected because I didn't play that well. I might get selected for next-round matches," Rinku said while talking to Sportstak.

The left-hander, meanwhile, has become a permanent fixture in the shortest format for India and is touted as the next finisher after MS Dhoni.

Rinku rose to fame with his calmness during some big chases in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His most notably cameo came in 2023 when he smashed five sixes in a row in the last over of the match to take his team through.

LSG Look For Gambhir's Replacement

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan is in negotiations with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the mentor's role. The northern IPL franchise, who came into the scene in 2022, has been without a mentor since Gautam Gambhir left the position vacant ahead of IPL 2024, to become Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s mentor. Thus, LSG is looking for Gambhir's successor.&nbsp;

Interestingly, Zaheer's name had cropped up as a likely candidate to become India's next bowling coach after the resignation of the Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff. However, Morkel pipped the former Indian speedster.&nbsp;

If the talks materalise, Zaheer -- the ODI World Cup winner -- could become Lucknow's mentor and also provide his expertise to the bowlers. Morne Morkel, LSG's bowling coach, also vacated the post recently after being roped in as India's bowling coach on newly-appointed head coach Gambhir's recommendation. If Zaheer comes into the picture,&nbsp;the veteran will&nbsp;be a key interlocutor&nbsp;for players and the management of the franchise.

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali thinks that India pacer Jasprit Bumrah should not be thinking about captaincy but focus on bowling instead. Basit made the comments days after Bumrah picked himself as the 'best captain.'

“There are great captains, but I’ll take my name — I am my favourite captain,” Bumrah had said while speaking at the Express Adda.

Reacting to Bumrah's comments, Ali, while speaking on his YouTube channel, said: "About Jasprit Bumrah's statement, it's just like how Babar Azam likes captaincy. In my opinion, he should not chase captaincy. He is a top-class bowler and should be focusing just on that."

Bumrah had also called for bowlers to be looked at as captaincy options, citing examples of Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Pat Cummins.

"He gave the examples of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan's captaincy. However, they had become all-rounders, which is why they succeeded as captains. They were not appointed captains when they came into their teams as bowlers. This is the difference between a bowler and an all-rounder," Ali said.

"He also spoke about Pat Cummins. Yes, Cummins is a good captain, but there are very few fast bowlers who can become a good coach or captain. My best wishes to Jasprit Bumrah. There is a chance that he could be made the captain after the Champions Trophy," Ali added.

Bumrah has played under MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for India and said that all three have their own style of captaincy.

Explaining the difference between the captaincy styles of these Indian skippers, Bumrah said, “Rohit (Sharma) is one of the few captains who has empathy towards bowlers, despite being a batsman. “MS (Dhoni) gave me a lot of security, quickly. He has a lot of faith in his instinct and doesn’t believe in a lot of planning. Virat (Kohli) is energy-driven and passionate and wears his heart on his sleeve."

'Difference between a bowler...,' Former Pak cricketer says Jasprit Bumrah shouldn't chase captaincy

The forthcoming India-Australia Test series is keenly awaited. Since 2014/15, Australia have not won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, including losing two successive home series. Thus, the players who have worn the Baggy Green for the first time following Australia's last Test series triumph over India are yet to lift the elusive Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Hazlewood, who debuted during Australia's victorious 2014-15 home series win against India, recently claimed that Pat Cummins &amp; Co. are desperate to settle scores versus the Asian giants.

<h2>'Last time, we&nbsp;bowled them out for 36&nbsp;and&nbsp;thought here we go.....'</h2>

As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, Hazlewood said, "There are quite a few players who have never beaten India in a Test series. It's quite astounding to say that. That's one we need to tick off, definitely, in particular at home - we should pretty much win every series here at home."

"That last series we obviously bowled them out for 36 in Adelaide and we thought here we go, [we are] back at home [and] confident on these grounds. People say we played India B in that last Test, but they can sometimes be stronger than the best team. They've got unbelievable depth in all formats and we are starting to see that now."

In the 2014/15&nbsp;series, Australia beat India 2-0. Since then, they have lost all the four series (two in India, two at home). India beat Australia in a Test series on Australian soil for the first time in 2018/19 and replicated that feat, sans many key players, in 2020/21. The 2020/21 series marked a historic win for India, who were led by Ajinkya Rahane after then regular captain Virat Kohli's early return home due to paternity leave.&nbsp;They overcome a 1-0 deficit -- being all-out for 36 in the&nbsp;series opener in Adelaide, i.e. was a pink-ball contest -- to eventually win 2-1.&nbsp;

The last Border-Gavaskar series saw Rohit Sharma-led India beat Cummins' Australia 2-1, in India, early in 2023.

The upcoming India-Australia Tests get underway on Nov 22 in Perth. This will be a five-match Test series, including a day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.
