Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has broken his silence on Pakistan's historic 10-wicket loss against Bangladesh at home in the first Rawalpindi Test. This is the first time Pakistan have lost by 10 wickets in a Test at home. It was also Bangladesh's first red-ball victory over Pakistan.

"I will fix the issues in Pakistan cricket, God willing. And changes are on the way," Naqvi said while talking to media.

It is to be noted that Naqvi had promised the same in the aftermath of recently-concluded T20 World Cup where they lost to host USA - a minnow team.&nbsp;

"Initially, I believed a minor surgery would suffice, but after this poor performance, it's clear that a major overhaul is needed. The nation will soon witness substantial changes,” Naqvi had said.&nbsp;

There, however, have been no changes so far, as the regular players are still very much part of the set-up, with most of them playing the first Test against Bangladesh as well.

Many of the former Pakistan players have criticised the PCB for failing to provide supportive pitch to the bowlers, especially after Pakistan opted for an all-pace attack - a rarity in the subcontinent.

Pakistan lost the Test by 10 wickets on day 5 after being bowled out for 146 in their second innings with most of their wickets falling to Bangladesh spinners.

In addition of that, the home team has also been fined for slow over rate as well. Pakistan were found six overs short, while Bangladesh were three overs short. The home team was fined 30 per cent match fee along with six WTC points.

The fines and point-deduction were in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.&nbsp;

Former India assistant coach Sanjay Bangar has said that Virat Kohli could have continued to be the Test skipper for a bit longer. Kohli quit the captaincy in January 2022 as not only India's but one of the world's most successful skippers. He led India in 68 Tests and won 40 of them - &nbsp;the most by an Indian skipper and the fourth most overall.

"Captaincy of the Indian team is a 24/7 job. Lot of on and off the field things happen like selection, non-selection and team performance. So, it does take a toll (on individual performances). Him giving up captaincy at that time means he is now playing with lesser responsibilities. Even though I personally feel he could have continued a bit longer as Test captain," Bangar said while speaking on The Rao Podcast.

Bangar also revealed how Kohli tweaked his game a bit during the dip in form to get back to scoring double tons.

"It is humanly impossible to sustain at the level at which he was playing between 2014 and 2019. The dip had to come. When you play with that sort of passion he was scoring daddy hundreds. But he told me that he wasn't scoring a double hundred. After a while he realised that there is a process to which he can make double hundreds and once he tasted that he made four or five in one season," shared Bangar.

Kohli is India's one of the prolific batters of all time having also gone past Sachin Tendulkar's record of most ODI centuries. He now has 50 ODI centuries - one more than Tendulkar. Overall, he's just second to Sachin (100) with 80 international tons.

Among the runs scored, Kohli has most runs (26,942) among the active batters while being fourth overall in history behind Sachin (34,357), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016) and Ricky Ponting (27,483).

Former India batter Shikhar Dhawan, days after announcing his retirement, has informed that he's joining Leagues League Cricket (LLC). It is a tournament played by retired players all around the world for their respective countries. Apart from India, Pakistan, Australia, England and West Indies are also part of it.

"My body is still conditioned for the demands of the game, and while I'm at ease with my decision, cricket is an inseparable part of who I am, it will never go out of me. I am eager to regroup with my cricketing friends and continue to entertain my fans as we create new memories together," said Dhawan in a statement.

Dhawan, 38, announced his retirement on August 24 via a video message. Dhawan played in a total of 269 international matches for India, scoring 10,867 runs.

“I always had one goal in mind that was to play for India and I achieved it thanks to a lot of people. First of all my family, my childhood coach Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under their guidance, I learnt cricket. Then my entire team with whom I played for years, got another family, fame and everyone’s love and support. As it’s said that to move ahead in the story you need to flip over the pages. Hence, I’m also doing that, I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket," said Dhawan in the video.

Known for his attacking style of play upfront, Dhawan made his ODI and Test debuts against Australia. Though he got out early on his One-Day debut, Dhawan slammed a brilliant 187 on his Test debut in Mohali – a then highest-score by an Indian.&nbsp;

Besides, Dhawan is also the only Indian batter to score a hundred in his 100th ODI match, scoring 109 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2018.&nbsp;

"Not many teams go to lose a Test match after declaring their first innings with 400+ runs and 4 wickets to spare. At Home. Pakistan cricket is a gift that keeps giving," Chopra wrote on X.

Afridi, on the other hand, went one step up and criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for failing to make a pitch to assist the all-pace attack.

“A 10-wicket defeat raises serious questions about the decision to prepare this type of pitch, select four fast bowlers and leave out a specialist spinner. This to me clearly shows a lack of awareness about home conditions,” wrote Afridi on X.

The former Pakistan all-rounder, however, congratulated Bangladesh for the brilliant display of cricket.

“That said, you cannot take the credit away from Bangladesh for the brand of cricket they played throughout the Test,” he added.

Skipper Masood did acknowledge the all-pace attack factor but sided with assistant coach Azhar Mahmud on pitch behaviour and said: "I mean, never to make it an excuse, but, uh, It didn't play the way we thought it would."&nbsp;

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is in legal trouble following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government. Shakib is named as one of the 146 people in an FIR in an alleged murder case which took place during the protest.

It is to be noted that Shakib was a Member of Parliament (MP) in Bangladesh, representing the ousted Hasina government's party.

BCB chief Faruque Ahmed, meanwhile, has said that a decision on the same will be taken after the first Test against Pakistan, which ended on Sunday (Aug 25).

"Let me say about Shakib. A case has been lodged. We are yet to get any legal notice. FIR (first information letter) was given in the case and later there will be an investigation and following that, the case will move in one direction or the other," Faruque told reporters following the meeting with BCB directors.

"Look, the FIR is just the first information letter and they are yet to claim any charge as far as I know, so before that, it is difficult to take a decision. The relationship between BCB and Shakib Al Hasan is like a player and an employer according to the contract. After tomorrow, we can think exactly after getting the legal notice and based on that. I cannot withdraw him from the middle of the Test match," he said.

"The second Test match is from August 30, so there is a gap between the games. During this period, we can think about what can be done in this regard," he added.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan lost his cool on day 5 of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi and threw a ball towards Mohamad Rizwan. It was the 33rd over of Pakistan's second innings as they tired to avoid an innings defeat.

Rizwan was not ready to face the ball by Shakib and stopped him in the tracks following which the bowler threw the ball over Rizwan's head in frustration. Shakib was scolded by the on field umpire for his behaviour. Have a look at the video below:

Chasing a sub-standard target of 30 runs, Bangladesh went through the runs in just six and a half overs after bowling Pakistan out for 146 in the second innings.

The day started with Pakistan 94 runs behind Bangladesh's first innings lead, with skipper Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique on the crease. The visitors turned the screws quickly on a fifth day pitch, taking all&nbsp;five wickets in the first session.

This is the first time Pakistan have lost by 10 wickets at home. Their decision to declare in the first innings on 448/6 would surely haunt them, especially with Rizwan at 171 not out.&nbsp;

It was, however, their decision to play an all-pace attack - a rarity in the subcontinent - that is going to be criticised more. Pakistan assistant coach Azar Mahmud although blames the pitch for not playing as they expected.

Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 191 in the first innings and helped the team take the lead, was named Player of the Match.

This is also Bangladesh's first Test win over Pakistan and the first 10-wicket loss for Men in Green at home in Tests.

Shakib was scolded by the on field umpire for his behaviour. The day started with Pakistan 94 runs behind Bangladesh's first innings lead, with skipper Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique on the crease. The visitors turned the screws quickly on a fifth day pitch, taking all five wickets in the first session. This is the first time Pakistan have lost by 10 wickets at home. Their decision to declare in the first innings on 448/6 would surely haunt them, especially with Rizwan at 171 not out.

Pakistan fielded an all-pace attack in Rawalpindi, surprising fans and former players alike. Their assistant coach Azar Mahmood, however, backed the decision and said it was the pitch which didn't behave properly.

"The reason we didn't play a spinner was there was grass on the pitch and we thought it would favour the seamers," Mahmood said as reported by cricket news outlet ESPN Cricinfo.

"We were hoping for that. But the three hours the pitch was sunned before the game started on the first day may have made a difference. The wicket dried out; we didn't think it would dry out so quickly, and that made it play differently."

"The best thing about Rohit is that he gives you freedom. However, if you don't meet his expectations, his reactions start to show a bit. He'll tell you that you should have done this or needed to do that. India are currently enjoying a brief free period with no international cricket planned until next month. India recently came back from the limited-over tour of Sri Lanka where they won the T20I series 3-0 but lost the three-match ODI series 2-0.

India's next assignment is a two-Test series against Bangladesh at home before facing New Zealand in a three-Test series - also at home. India will then travel to Australia for a five-match Test series.

Shami, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury, is expected to make a comeback during the New Zealand home series. The pacer had gotten injured during the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.

India will be hoping for Shami to get back to full fitness at least ahead of the Australia series if not New Zealand as they aim for a third straight series victory Down Under.

Nicholas Pooran smashed an unbeaten 65 from 26 balls as the West Indies defeated an experimental South Africa side by seven wickets in their T20 international at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium on Friday.

West Indies put the visitors in to bat, in the first of the three match series, and made a strong start with the bowl.

The Caribbean side limited South Africa to 42-5 from the opening eight overs, with seamer Matthew Forde picking up the wickets of Ryan Rickelton (4) and skipper Aiden Markram (14).

But Tristan Stubbs led the fightback with a superb 76 from 42 balls including three sixes.

Stubbs was well supported by Patrick Kruger who struck 44 from 32 balls as South Africa recovered to 174-7 from their 20 overs.

The game had been delayed for over an hour by heavy rain but as the game went on conditions for batting improved and the home side took full advantage.

West Indies went on the attack from the outset with the opening pair of Alick Athanaze (40) and Shai Hope (51) putting on 84 from the opening wicket before Athinaze was removed in the eighth over, caught by keeper Markram off Ottneil Baartman.

Pooran then took the game away from the Proteas with a brilliant display of power hitting, including smashing Burger for four sixes in a row in the 12th over.

Although South Africa gave themselves some chance with the removal of Hope and skipper Rovman Powell (7) the outcome was never in doubt as the home side passed the target with 13 balls to spare.

The positive note for South Africa was the sight of left-arm seamer Kwena Maphaka -- the youngest man to make his international debut for the country at 18 years and 137 days --&nbsp;taking the wicket of Powell.

"He has a lot of X-factor and is really young," said Markram.&nbsp;

"He has hunger when you speak to him off the field and he wants to win games for South Africa," he added.

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi is all set for his return to the side having been out of action for more than a month. According to Messi’s Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino, Messi is not far from a return having taken part in light training as the Major League Soccer (MLS) season reaches the business end. The legendary Argentina player has been out of action since the Copa America final in the United States in July where his side won its second consecutive continental title.

<h2>Messi nearing MLS return</h2>

"I wouldn't be able to give an approximate number of days that he returns to training, but it is not a situation that is too far away," Martino said while speaking to ESPN.

"There is a part of the injuries that have to do with the physical, and there is a part that has to do with the mental. We have to overcome them both ways, and I think he is going through that process," he added.

Despite Messi not being part of the team, Miami have done reasonably well having scalped 53 points in 25 matches and leading the Eastern Conference. They are all but qualified for the MLS playoffs and will cement their place in the coming days.

It has been a year of revolution for the Florida-based club having gone from bottom of the league to now potential winners of the MLS.

Despite the hints, there is no return date yet set for the 37-year-old who could feature in September for the side. Earlier in the week Messi was omitted from Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The Argentina squad will be the first since 2013 when neither Messi nor Angel di Maria feature in the squad.

While Messi is out due to injury, Di Maria called time on his international career having played a pivotal role in the South American nation’s recent international accolades.

Australia's bowling attack has been dealt a huge blow in their preparations for the T20I series against Scotland with veteran bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out due to a calf injury. Hazlewood who plays a key role in the Australian bowling department in all three formats will miss all the three T20I matches after an announcement was made on Saturday (Aug 24). While the extent of the injury remains unidentified he will be expecting to return for the England series later in September.

<h2>Hazlewood to miss Australia tour of Scotland</h2>

Having been selected for the entire United Kingdom tour, Hazlewood’s injury comes as a minor setback for the ODI World champions. He sustained niggle in his right calf and was unable to pass the fitness test which left the management to rest him ahead of a busy period in the Australian summer. The veteran speedster, however, is expected to be back for the England white-ball tour.

Considering Australia need a full-strength bowling attack during the summer when they face India in a five-match Test series. Australia’s team management is keeping an eye on all the developments in the bowling department having excluded Pat Cummins altogether from the UK tour while Mitchell Starc will only feature in the white-ball series in England.

Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando rocked England with three top-order wickets before Harry Brook's unbeaten fifty left the first Test at Old Trafford interestingly poised on Thursday. &nbsp;

After rain washed out the morning session, England were 176-4 -- 60 runs behind Sri Lanka's first innings 236 -- at tea on the second day.

Asitha Fernando had figures of 3-46 in 10 overs, having dismissed opener Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for just six in his first innings as England captain before also removing key batsman Joe Root for 42.

But the 25-year-old Brook was 53 not out, with fellow rising star Jamie Smith unbeaten on 22 in an unbroken stand of 51 in 11 overs.

Sri Lanka had collapsed to 6-3, losing their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls on Wednesday's opening day of this three-match series.

But their bowlers still had runs to play after Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva top-scored with 74 after winning the toss and Milan Rathnayake made 72 as he set a new record for the highest score by any Test debutant batting at No. 9.

Play got underway Thursday with the floodlights on full beam in conditions favouring Sri Lanka's quicks.

Asitha Fernando thought he had Dan Lawrence lbw for 10 but the batsman, opening after Zak Crawley was ruled out with a broken finger, successfully reviewed umpire Paul Reiffel's decision on height.

Two balls later, however, the paceman's inswinger to Duckett, who added just five to his overnight 13, had the left-hander leg before with Sri Lanka overturning former Australia seamer Reiffel's original not out verdict on this occasion.

<h2>Pope bowled</h2>

Asitha Fernando's day got even better when he dismissed Pope, leading England after Ben Stokes was ruled out due to a torn hamstring, with a ball that knocked over the off stump after nipping back through the gap between bat and pad.

Lawrence, however, pulled successive Asitha Fernando deliveries for four as the bowler dropped short.&nbsp;

But just as he was getting into top gear, Lawrence edged a ball angled across him from left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando and was well caught by diving wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal for 30.

The makeshift opener's angry swish of the bat made clear how much Lawrence felt he had contributed to a dismissal that left England 67-3.

Pope's exit, however, had brought in Root, with the former England captain boasting a superb record against Sri Lanka of more than a 1,000 runs, including four hundred, in 11 previous Tests at an average of nearly 60.

Root was soon into his stride, with an onside clip for four off the expensive Rathnayake (0-45 in seven overs), before both he and Yorkshire team-mate Brook drove the paceman down the ground in near-identical textbook fashion.

Asitha Fernando, though, ended a promising stand of 58 in 11 overs when Root inside-edged an intended drive and a diving Chandimal held a fine low catch.

But new batsman Smith confidently advanced down the pitch to drive left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya for six before Brook completed a 59-ball fifty.

ALSO READ | India tour of Australia: Cameron Green ready to bowl during BGT, says 'I am in a really good place' Pope bowled Asitha Fernando's day got even better when he dismissed Pope, leading England after Ben Stokes was ruled out due to a torn hamstring, with a ball that knocked over the off stump after nipping back through the gap between bat and pad. Lawrence, however, pulled successive Asitha Fernando deliveries for four as the bowler dropped short.

CEAT Cricket Awards: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid win big - Full list of awardees

Rahul Dravid opened up on the importance of creating and maintaining a vibrant team atmosphere that helped India during the home ODI World Cup last year. While Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost in the final, to Australia on Nov 19, the Dravid-led coaching staff continued to work tirelessly to carry&nbsp;forward the same energy during the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA, which resulted in Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s historic win.

At the CEAR Cricket Rating Awards, Dravid revealed, "Honestly, I didn't want to do anything different. I think we ran a fantastic campaign in the one-day World Cup, Rohit and the team, everyone involved in that one-day World Cup, we ran a superb campaign. There's nothing we could have done more in terms of our preparation, the planning, the execution of what we needed to do for 10 games in a row to dominate, to win the game we did, play the game we did."

Ahead of the T20 WC, Dravid mentioned that he didn't want to bring in a lot of changes. He further opined, "I did not want to change anything. If you'd asked me and we had a discussion with our support staff, we'd get together with the coaches and say, what do you think we should do differently?

"The common consensus (among the team) was we need to do exactly what we did. We need to create the same energy, create the same vibe, the same team atmosphere that we had and then just hope that on the day, we'll have a little bit of luck," he added.

Initially, Dravid was roped in to coach India from late 2021 until the 2023 ODI WC, in mid-Nov. However, seeing India's dominance in the mega event despite ending as runners-up, the BCCI and captain Rohit insisted him to extend his tenure until the T20 WC, which kicked off in early June. The decision proved a masterstroke as Dravid-led coaching staff stayed and helped India win their first-ever ICC title after 11 years during the recently-held&nbsp;T20 WC.&nbsp;

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has refreshed the memories of the 2021 Test win for India in Brisbane as the two nations will once again lock horns later in the year. India, who beat Australia for the first time in 40&nbsp;years at the Gabba, saw Rishabh Pant play a match-winning knock as Ajinkya Rahane’s side won the series 2-1. The match that went down in the folklore of Indian cricketing history was recalled by Hayden during the CEAT Cricket Awards on Thursday.

<h2>Matthew Hayden recalls Rishabh Pant moment</h2>

"Guys like Rishabh Pant have got a muscle memory and the thirst for victory. He was such a key player last time he played there and the Australian public loved him as well, because of the nature of the way he played his game," Hayden said while speaking at the&nbsp;CEAT Cricket Awards on Thursday.

Playing at the Gabba, India needed 328 runs to win in the final innings of the final Test match of the series. With the series 1-1 and Australia having not lost at the Gabba for four decades against any opponent, Rishabh Pant was the architect of the win. He scored an unbeaten 89 and helped India to back-to-back series wins Down Under. According to Hayden, Rishabh’s innings was one of the best, which even the home supporters adored.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Matthew Hayden revisits Rishabh Pant's match-winning knock at Gabba

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is ready to make his mark in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he opened up on his bowling stance while speaking on Thursday (Aug 22). Green, one of the ace all-rounders in the Aussie side, reckons he is ready to bowl in the red-ball format after struggling with&nbsp;injuries in the past. According to Green, he and Mitchell Marsh are good options for the side in the bowling department as they take on India in the five-match Test series.

<h2>Green ready for BGT</h2>

“Physically, I am in a really good place to be able to do that. We always laugh and joke between me and Mitch about who bowls those graveyard overs between the 70th and the 80th overs when the ball is not doing anything. We'll wait and see how we do it this summer,” the 25-year-old stated, dismissing any immediate plans to scale back his dual responsibilities.

Green will be ready to step up with both bat and ball as the series will have huge bearings on the World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification. Australia currently sit second in the WTC standings with eight wins in 12 matches and have lost three games in the cycle so far.

Australia had a good last summer, having beaten Pakistan and then drawing against West Indies in two home series. They will rely heavily on the services of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the bowling department. The likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will have to come good with the bat if the Aussies are to win the BG Trophy in almost a decade.

India tour of Australia: Cameron Green ready to bowl during BGT, says 'I am in a really good place'

New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee lauded India pacer Jasprit Bumrah during the just-held CEAT Cricket Rating Award ceremony on Wednesday (Aug 21) in Mumbai. On the sidelines of the event, Southee lavished huge praise on Bumrah for making a successful international return after a long layoff, due to back surgery, and termed him 'tremendous' across formats.

Bumrah was out of cricketing action in late 2022 due to a recurrent back issue. He, thus, missed a plethora of series and returned before last year's home ODI World Cup, where he ended with 20 wickets (fourth-most). He has been in roaring form since then. The speedster claimed 19 scalps in the India versus England home Tests early this year and played a key role in the Rohit Sharma-led side's T20 WC title-winning run, in the West Indies and the USA, in June. Bumrah returned with the Player-of-the-Tournament award in the T20 WC, accounting for&nbsp;15&nbsp;scalps at an economy rate of 4.17.

<h2>'We are just seeing a great version of Jasprit Bumrah'</h2>

On the sidelines of&nbsp;the award ceremony, Southee said, "To be able to firstly bounce back from the major injury and come back, he's even better than what he was beforehand. Throw in on top of that, having to juggle multiple formats, can be difficult at times as well. He seems to have been able to do that with ease as well. He's probably more experienced and understands his game a bit more. He probably had that time where he was injured to come back and be recharged, refreshed."

Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since India's glorious win in the T20 WC final, beating South Africa by 7 runs at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29. Chris Woakes has struggled to replicate his home form on England's overseas tours but the fast bowler said he is ready to answer the call if selected for tours of Pakistan and New Zealand later this year. Woakes has taken 127 wickets in 32 test matches on home soil but picked up just 36 wickets in 20 matches abroad. His last overseas tour was in 2022 and he was criticised for his performances in England's 4-0 drubbing in Australia during the 2021-22 Ashes.

England travel to Pakistan for a three-test series in October, before playing three matches in New Zealand in December. "I'll play for England where I'm picked to play for England. I certainly wouldn't rule myself out," Woakes, who took 3-32 on the first day of England's opening test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, told reporters of the upcoming tours.

"The selectors will have their plans, but I'm certainly not going to turn down a tour if selected. "I haven't played an away test for a little while, but that might be a good thing because it can give you a fresh look on things. I wouldn't shy away from it."

Woakes also said he has worked hard on his batting, which could boost his chances of selection. "That's a bonus, isn't it? It's certainly something which I've always worked on," said the 35-year-old, who has a batting average of 27.76. "I've put in some hard yards to make sure that I'm capable of doing that. "It's an extra string in the bow which allows you to potentially be selected ahead of someone else who maybe can't quite fulfil that role."

England trail Sri Lanka by 214 runs after day one of the first Test.

Eng vs SL: England pacer Chris Woakes not shying away from selection for overseas tours

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden refused to pick a favourite between India and Australia for the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, to be held later this year in Australia. Since the 2016/17 edition, India have not lost the BGT and Rohit Sharma-led side will be eager to make it three successive Test series win on Australian soil when they tour Down Under in the upcoming Aussie summer. Hayden, the former left-handed batter, didn't pick a favourite and stated that had Cheteshwar Pujara been a part of the Indian batting line-up, he would've given the edge to India.

On the sidelines of the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards, held in Mumbai on Wednesday (Aug 21), Hayden told PTI, ""You look at the lineups, and it's hard to really tell who has the edge. I sense that it's going to be runs that are going to be the point of difference. Guys that are sure bets have retired, like (Cheteshwar) Pujara was a sure bet in Australian conditions."

He further opined, "Was he exciting? No. Was he effective? Heck, yes. When you look back over the years, guys like Raul Dravid, VVS Laxman... they were really sure bets in our market. The best need to stand up in this series, runs are going to be at a premium."

Notably, Pujara was the difference between both sides when Virat Kohli-led India created history by becoming the first-ever Asian side to win a Test series in Australia in 2018/19. The right-hander, who last played for India during the WTC 2023 final, ended as the Player-of-the-Series with 521 runs in four Tests at 74.42, including three centuries and one fifty.

In the 2020/21 BGT in Australia, Pujara once again played a valuable hand by scoring 271 runs at an average of 33.87 with three half-centuries. He was also among runs in the home Tests in the 2016/17 edition, with a best of 202.

Pujara, a veteran of 103 Tests, has 7,195 runs in the purest format, at an average of 43.60. He, however, hasn't been in India's scheme of things in Tests since mid-2023 and also not been named for the upcoming Duleep Trophy tournament.&nbsp;

At the CEAT Awards, held in Mumbai on Wednesday (Aug 21), India's Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma won the&nbsp;Men's International Cricketer of the Year award. Post his win, Rohit lauded the 'three pillars', ex-head coach Rahul Dravid, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Secretary Jay Shah, for their constant support and labelled them as the reason behind India's historic 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, in June.&nbsp;

Post India's win in the T20 WC, held in West Indies and the USA, Rohit issued a warning to world cricket saying that he remains desperate to win more titles for India.

In the mega event, Rohit said, "It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, the results, to make sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much. That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and the) chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. That was very critical for me to do what I did and obviously not to forget the players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved."

Rohit further mentioned that he has won five IPL titles, as Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper, due to his hunger to keep winning. Hence, he warned world cricket that India will continue to improve and aim to win more ICC events. Hitman added, "There is a reason I won five IPL trophies. I'm not going to stop, because once you get the taste of winning games, winning Cups, you don't want to stop and we'll keep pushing as a team. We'll keep striving for better things in the future."

Under Rohit and Dravid, India won the 2024 T20 WC in Barbados on June 29, beating South Africa in a thrilling final. Post that, the Dravid-led coaching staff stepped aside as Gautam Gambhir took over as India's coach, until the 2027 ODI WC.

Talking about the next ICC event, India are now focused on the 2025 Champions Trophy, to be held in Pakistan early next year. Moreover, the Asian giants have a solid chance to once again enter the WTC final of the ongoing 2023-25 cycle. The finale will be held in June 2025.

Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant fast bowler Milan Rathnayake both made fine fifties as Sri Lanka recovered from a dramatic top-order collapse on the opening day of the first Test against England at Old Trafford Wednesday.

Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 6-3 after skipper De Silva won the toss, losing their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

Yet they recovered to 236 all out, De Silva top-scoring with 74 and tailender Rathnayake, with only his third first-class fifty, close behind in making 72.

The pair checked England's progress during an eighth-wicket partnership of 63, with no other Sri Lanka batsman making more than Kusal Mendis's 24.

Chris Woakes struck twice in an over on his way to 3-32 in 11 overs. &nbsp;

De Silva's impressive innings ended when he turned a quicker ball from off-spinner Shoaib Bashir straight to Dan Lawrence at leg slip, with the 20-year-old taking 3-55 in 23 overs.

Ben Duckett and Lawrence, recalled in place of the injured Zak Crawley, guided England to 22-0 before bad light ended play for the day at 5:52 pm (1652 GMT).

Sri Lanka's initial collapse ensured a dream start for stand-in England captain Ollie Pope, leading his country for the first time after Ben Stokes was ruled out with a torn hamstring.

The tourists came into their first Test in England in eight years on the back of just a solitary warm-up fixture -- a defeat by the second-string England Lions -- with De Silva insisting Tuesday that Sri Lanka had wanted at least one more game before the series started.

"The conditions are quite different to Asian countries," he said. "We wanted to play a few matches, but that's what we get."

<h2>Stunning slump</h2>

Sri Lanka's collapse began in the sixth over when Dimuth Karunaratne top-edged a hook off fast bowler Gus Atkinson to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Woakes then took two wickets in the next over, with Nishan Madushka, the other opening batsman, driving loosely at an outswinger and edging to Joe Root at first slip as he fell for four.

Five balls later, Angelo Mathews was plumb lbw for a duck, playing no shot to a Woakes delivery that nipped back off the pitch.

Mendis was undone by express fast bowler Mark Wood, with Mendis gloving a superb 93 mph (150 km/h) delivery that reared up from short of a length to second slip.

De Silva, however, pulled Atkinson for a commanding four and completed an impressively quick fifty off just 56 balls.

He was reprieved on 65, when Smith missed a difficult stumping chance off Bashir, but was out shortly afterwards to leave Sri Lanka 176-8.

But the 28-year-old Rathnayake, undaunted by the loss of his skipper, went on to score a 96-ball fifty in style when the left-handed batsman drove Bashir for a straight six that also took Sri Lanka past 200.

With the floodlights piercing increasingly gloomy skies, Pope turned to part-time spinner Root in a bid to snatch a wicket at a time when deploying the fast bowlers might have seen the umpires halt play for bad light.

Rathnayake, however, responded by launching Root for six over long-off. He also drove Bashir through extra cover before hitting him to Woakes at mid-on.&nbsp;

Before play started, there was a minute's applause in honour of Graham Thorpe, the former England batsman and assistant coach, with both teams, as well as the match officials, wearing black armbands in his honour.

Thorpe died, aged 55, earlier this month after being hit by a train. His wife, Amanda, confirmed he had taken his own life after suffering from depression for several years.
