Uncertainty remains around the 2025 Champions Trophy's venue. Pakistan, the defending champions, are scheduled to host the mega event early next year. However, the bigger question is whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will send Team India to Pakistan. Given the prevailing political tensions and security considerations, BCCI remains reluctant. India have not travelled to Pakistan since 2008 and the two teams have not met each other in any bilateral series since early 2013, due to the political tension between the Asian nations. While a final call is yet to be taken, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria admitted that India should not go to Pakistan and advised Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to go for a hybrid model, with India to play their games in Dubai.

Kaneria urged PCB to consider the broader implications and consult with the ICC before going ahead with any decision.

Suryakumar Yadav gets injured in domestic competition ahead of key Bangladesh series

Former India World Cup winner Suresh Raina has slammed the star pairing of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after they opted to skip the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024. Both Virat and Rohit along with Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin were given special permission to miss the domestic tournament which starts on Friday (Sep 5). However, according to Raina, they should have opted to play in the Duleep Trophy considering India are set to face Bangladesh and Australia in an important Test series before the end of the year.

Raina slams Rohit, Virat

“Yes, they should’ve played, you see we haven’t played red-ball cricket ever since the IPL ended. Since we’re heading towards a crucial Test series, one must play 4-day cricket and get used to how the wicket will behave on Day 4. I think they’re mature enough when they will regroup for 4-5 days and start practicing. Sometimes, family time is also important,” Raina told Sports Tak.

India are set to host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in September and their biggest test will be the five-match series in Australia. With important points up for grabs in the World Test Championship (WTC), Raina has urged the duo to take part in the premier domestic competition which could help them warm up for the upcoming series.

Currently, Virat is in the UK spending time with his family while Rohit has also opted to stay away from action. However, they are likely to return for the Test series against Bangladesh in September and are also expected to play in the ODI series.
Shan Masood-led Pakistan lost the two-match Test series opener versus Bangladesh, in Rawalpindi, on Sunday (Aug 25). Following their shocking loss, the entire Pakistan team was trolled left, right and centre. Many also criticised star batter Babar Azam as he returned with 0 and 22 in the series opener. Babar has not been in form for quite sometime, managing only 122 runs at a woeful strike-rate of 101.66 in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In addition, the right-hander is without a half-century in the last 14 Test innings, scoring 289 runs at an average of 20.64 with a high score of 41. Pak vs Ban: 'Anybody can criticise and ridicule anyone', Ramiz backs underfire Babar Azam amid poor form

It will be a new era in the International Cricket Council (ICC) administration starting December 1 as India’s Jay Shah will officially take charge as the new Chairman of the Board. As announced on Tuesday (Aug 27), Shah will succeed Greg Barclay in a two-year term which could come as bad news for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and their ambitions to host the Champions Trophy. The feature ICC tournament is set to take place in Pakistan in February and March 2025, but now the equations could change massively.

Why Shah’s rise is bad news for PCB?

As revealed in the past, Shah, the youngest ICC Chairman at 35 has an anti-Pakistan stand and was reluctant to send the Indian team to Pakistan during the 2023 Asia Cup. While in charge as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shah’s stand to not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 saw the tournament held in a hybrid model with Sri Lanka being chosen as co-host for India’s matches including final.

If the same stand continues for the upcoming Champions Trophy, India won’t travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. This could see the coveted tournament either held in a hybrid model or completely outside Pakistan.

The ICC in the coming days will have the ball in their court to decide the fate of the tournament, but with Shah in charge, the decision will likely favour India. If this is the case, Pakistan could lose out on a huge chunk of matches being hosted in their land or could even completely miss the tournament.
Pakistan axe Shaheen Shah Afridi

"Shaheen's missed out this game," Test coach Jason Gillespie said. "We've had a good conversation with him, and he fully understands and appreciates the thinking behind it. Shaheen's been given some feedback. He's working on some things with his bowling to be as effective as he possibly can be. He's working really well with Azhar Mahmood. We want to see Shaheen at his best because we've got a lot of cricket in all formats and Shaheen's going to play a really big role in that."

Having returned to the Test set-up for the first time since the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, Shaheen was ineffective overall, having scalped two wickets in both innings combined. He ended with figures of 88/2 in the first innings and was not needed to bowl much in the second innings as Bangladesh needed just 30 runs to win.

IPL 2024 saw Hardik Pandya returning to Mumbai Indians (MI) camp and replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain. Meanwhile, there was a lot of drama in the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise as well. KL Rahul had a forgettable run as a captain with LSG ending seventh and failing to make the playoffs. As a batter, he ended with a mediocre strike-rate of 136.12 despite making 520 runs. In addition, a clip went viral with LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka having an animated discussion with Rahul amid LSG's struggles in the business end of this year's edition. With Rohit's removal as MI captain and Goenka-Rahul's video going viral, many thought Hitman might enter the IPL 2025 auction and LSG can aim for Rohit to succeed Rahul (with reports even claiming that they have kept aside a whopping INR 500 million, i.e. INR 50 crore, for the Mumbaikar). Goenka has finally reacted on this possibility.

Virat Kohli has always been very supportive of the young Indian players. In Team India, he shares a great rapport with youngster Shubman Gill. Gill, who is often touted to be the next Virat Kohli, has formed some memorable partnerships with his senior, especially in Tests and ODIs, during his brief career. Recently, a video went viral where the 35-year-old Kohli is seen berating Gill's success in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar, in Australia (where the right-hander made 259 runs in 3 Tests). The former Indian captain stated that the youngster has a 'long way to go' and 'cannot be the next Kohli'. However, the video has turned out to be fake.

In addition, Kohli arrogantly claims, 'In Indian cricket, there's god (Sachin Tendulkar) and then there's me'.

Ollie Pope has asked Joe Root for guidance on how best to balance the demands of batting and captaincy after an awkward first outing as stand-in England skipper against Sri Lanka.

Pope, in the first of three matches deputising for the injured Ben Stokes, led England to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Old Trafford last week as they went 1-0 up with two Tests to play.

Nevertheless, No 3 batsman Pope was himself twice out for six in Manchester -- the second time to an ill-judged reverse sweep.

England batter Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket as he dropped the curtains on his illustrious career on Wednesday (Aug 28). Having represented England in all three formats, he retires with a unique distinction of having scored a hundred in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. His last international appearance was at the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 and was since overlooked for the international set-up.

Malan calls time on international career

Having busted on the scene late in his career, Malan made his debut in June 2017 when he was 30. He got rewarded for his excellent form during the South Africa series as he made his Test debut. He was part of the England squad during the Ashes in 2017 in Australia and was the fourth-best batter during the tour. Despite his excellent run in the T20I and Test format, it was not until 2019 that he was handed an ODI cap.

However, he missed out on England’s squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup, where Eoin Morgan’s side emerged victorious. Till 2021, he played his second ODI match, thereby, limiting his stay in the ODI set-up.

Malan, however, did not miss out on glory at the T20 World Cup in 2022, where England were relentless and won the tournament Down Under.
Despite playing in 22 Tests for the national team, he regretted not being a regular in the Test team under the captaincy of Joe Root and Alastair Cook.

"Test cricket was always the pinnacle for me growing up," he said. "At times I played well but in between just wasn't good enough or consistent enough, which was disappointing because I felt I was a better player than that.”

Pakistan have announced their squad for the second Test match against Bangladesh as they get ready to gain parity in the two-match Test series. Star names like Babar Azam and Abrar Ahmed have returned to the squad having missed the opening Test against Bangladesh. The announcement made on Wednesday (Aug 28) also saw the return of Aamir Jamal to the team, as they bid to win the second Test in Rawalpindi. Pakistan earlier lost the opening Test by 10 wickets against Bangladesh in what was also their first loss against their Asian counterparts.

Babar, Abrar return to squad

"Abrar Ahmed and Kamran Ghulam were released from the Test squad before the start of the first Test match and featured for Pakistan Shaheens in a four-day game against Bangladesh ‘A’ at the Islamabad Club from 20 to 23 August. Also, Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was released from the squad at the conclusion of the first Test, has rejoined the squad on Tuesday evening," a PCB release said.

"Meanwhile, Aamir Jamal, who had been released from the squad to work on his fitness at the NCA, has been recalled. Aamir’s participation in the second Test will remain subject to fitness clearance," it further added.

Pakistan will go for a change in strategy in the second Test with the inclusion of Abrar who is likely to be included in the Starting XI. The hosts went a pace attack during the opening Test which backfired completely. Despite having scored 448 runs, a poor show in the second innings saw them lose by 10 wickets.
