Taraji P Henson broke down while promoting her new film The Color Purple. She appeared on a SiriusXM interview with Gayle King when he asked if she was considering quitting acting. There have been rumours that Taraji is contemplating quitting showbiz.

In response, Taraji said, “I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost. I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ Well, I have to. The math ain’t math-ing. When you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone. It’s a whole team behind us. They have to get paid.”

“When you hear someone go, ‘Such and such made $10 million,’ that didn’t make it to their account. Off the top, Uncle Sam is getting 50%. Now have $5 million. Your team is getting 30% of what you gross, not after what Uncle Sam took. Now do the math. I’m only human. Every time I do something and break another glass ceiling, when it’s time to renegotiate I’m at the bottom again like I never did what I just did, and I’m tired. I’m tired. It wears on you. What does that mean? What is that telling me? If I can’t fight for them coming up behind me then what the f*** am I doing?”

Taraji broke down into tears during this part of the interview. She explained how she has gone on to do great roles, and shatter stereotypes but that has never translated to money in her account.

She said that she is tired of being told that there is not a lot of money on the table because Black actors and stories “don’t translate overseas.”

The actress added, “I’m tired of hearing that my entire career. Twenty-plus years in the game and I hear the same thing and I see what you do for another production but when it’s time to go to bat for us they don’t have enough money. And I’m just supposed to smile and grin and bear it. Enough is enough! That’s why I have other [brands] because this industry, if you let it, it will steal your soul. I refuse to let that happen.”

Animal has been sensational at the box office. The Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial opened to massive numbers and has been consistent with its collections amid a raging debate on typification of women, sexual dynamics between a man and a woman, toxic masculinity perpetuated by the society and the universal language of love between a father-son duo. Animal is led by Ranbir Kapoor and stars other prominent names from the industry including Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor.

We got in touch with actress Charu Shankar who featured in Animal in the role of Ranbir Kapoor’s mother even though in real life, she is only a year older than the actor. Charu who was convincing in her role spoke to WION exclusively about the debate around the age-gap with her co-star Ranbir and her experience working with him and Anil Kapoor.

Edited excerpts from the chat:

Q: How do you feel about people reacting to you playing Ranbir Kapoor’s mother even though you’re just one year older than him?

A: The age gap debate is a very old one, and a very valid one. But this is really not a question I can comment on. This is a larger question for the powers that be in Bollywood, Hollywood, and in every industry. What I can comment on is my own role in the film where my character Jyoti establishes the central conflict of the story right at the start of the film – when RK’s character is still a young boy. Sandeep believed I was the right choice for this crucial part of his story. That’s how I came on board.

Q: What was your experience working with Anil and Ranbir Kapoor?

A: RK and AK are both huge superstars, and I was very nervous on my first day on the set. Both of them immediately put me at ease. Both are very collaborative actors, generous with their craft and time, and it was a pleasure working with them.

Interview | Ticket sales an unfair parameter to compare two films: Sam Bahadur actor on clash with Animal

Q: What was the vibe like on the sets of Animal?

A: We shared many laughs on the set. Shakti Sir, Rashmika, Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and I had many scenes together. One day, the sun was directly shining into our eyeline, and Ranbir taught all actors a technique to look into bright sunlight without squinting (and it works!). As for Anil Kapoor, he is so fit and so serious about his workouts and diet. Even when we had a 5 am call sometimes, AK would be in the hotel gym, getting his workout for the day done.

Edited excerpts from the chat: Q: How do you feel about people reacting to you playing Ranbir Kapoor’s mother even though you’re just one year older than him? A: The age gap debate is a very old one, and a very valid one. But this is really not a question I can comment on. This is a larger question for the powers that be in Bollywood, Hollywood, and in every industry. What I can comment on is my own role in the film where my character Jyoti establishes the central conflict of the story right at the start of the film – when RK’s character is still a young boy. Sandeep believed I was the right choice for this crucial part of his story. That’s how I came on board. Interview: Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan talks about debut Hindi film Kadak Singh and more Q: What was your experience working with Anil and Ranbir Kapoor? A: RK and AK are both huge superstars, and I was very nervous on my first day on the set. Both of them immediately put me at ease. Both are very collaborative actors, generous with their craft and time, and it was a pleasure working with them. Interview | Ticket sales an unfair parameter to compare two films: Sam Bahadur actor on clash with Animal Q: What was the vibe like on the sets of Animal? A: We shared many laughs on the set. Shakti Sir, Rashmika, Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and I had many scenes together. Looks like we missed out on something really great. Ace filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and Star Trek producer JJ Abrams were supposed to work together on a Star Trek film but it never materialised. Reportedly they had ironed out differences with screenwriter Mark L Smith for a Star Trek film but the idea ultimately got scrapped. Now speaking in an interview, Mark Smith revealed that if it had been made, it would have been the “the greatest Star Trek film”.

Mark said, “Quentin and I went back and forth, he was gonna do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films. I remember we were talking, and he goes, ‘If I can just wrap my head around the idea that ‘Star Trek’ could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?’ And I think that was the bump he could never get across, so the script is still sitting there on his desk.”

For the unversed, Quentin Tarantino has insisted that he will only make 10 films and will retire post his 10th film. He has so far made nine films. This means only one Quentin Tarantino directorial is left to be made.

“I know he said a lot of nice things about it. I would love for it to happen. It’s just one of those things that I can’t ever see happening. But it would be the greatest ‘Star Trek’ film, not for my writing, but just for what Tarantino was gonna do with it. It was just a balls-out kind of thing,” Mark added.

Postpartum recovery can take months for some, and years for others. The deciding factor is usually the care given to the mother in the first stage after delivery which is worldwide rightly called the fourth trimester. One of the most important factors that greatly aids in a mother’s recovery from childbirth is post-pregnancy nutrition. A new mother's diet should contain all the necessary nutrients and vitamins just as it was throughout pregnancy.

The new mother's body not only has to provide for the baby with milk but also needs to bounce back for the sake of the woman. Knowing what to eat and what to avoid gives the infant the nutrition they need while also assisting in energy restoration for the mother. If you are someone who needs postpartum care personally or know someone who needs it within your circle, here are some nutritious food choices to incorporate into your diet, as recommended by Nisha, Consultant Dietician and Nutritionist at Motherhood Hospitals, Gurugram.

1. Moringa

Mothers are advised to take moringa leaves as soon as possible after giving birth. Together with a variety of other nutrients and minerals including calcium, iron, and protein, they are known to include healthy amounts of vitamins A, B, and C. To incorporate fresh moringa leaves into your diet, you can add them to soups, fried vegetables, and other dishes.

2. Ragi or Finger Millet

Finger millet also known as ragi in India, is high in iron and calcium and can improve your health. Finger millet is particularly beneficial for lactose-intolerant people as it helps restore strength after childbirth and provides necessary nutrients. You can consume it either in the form of rotis or porridge.

3. Dalia

Dalia has a tonne of health advantages. Made from broken wheat, Dalia has a high nutritional content and is easily digested. It is thought to be among the finest foods for energy levels because of its high fibre content.

4. Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables (raw and unprocessed) come at the top of every nutrition diet chart for obvious reasons. For a postpartum diet too, fruits and vegetables are your best bet. Vegetables are full of nutrients, fibre, and vitamins that help support digestive health, boost energy, prevent constipation, and are excellent for nursing mothers.

5. Soaked Nuts

Packed with vital minerals like iron, calcium, and zinc, as well as vitamins K and B – nuts are another nutritional powerhouse. They're a good source of protein and important fatty acids as well. In addition to being incredibly nutritious, nuts are also thought to be lactogenic.

6. Black Sesame Seeds

These small flat seeds are rich in calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorus. All these nutrients may be found in black sesame seeds which makes them good for restoring the body's supply of essential minerals. Controlling bowel movements is another common benefit associated with black sesame seeds.

7. Edible Gum

Gondh, also known as edible gum or acacia gum, holds significant nutritional value, particularly beneficial for pregnant women. Rich in calcium, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, it aids in strengthening bones, supporting foetal development, and boosting overall immunity. Consuming it during pregnancy can help alleviate common issues like joint pain, promote healthy digestion, and contribute to the mother's overall well-being. Its natural properties make it a valuable addition to a balanced diet, offering pregnant women a wholesome and nourishing supplement to support their health and the growth of their unborn child.

Many people think that consuming foods high in sugar or clarified butter increases milk production and gives a new mother more strength and endurance. But it’s not true. You can, however, have a moderate amount of sugar and ghee with your meal and stay away from spicy and deep-fried items that can upset your stomach and cause indigestion.

This was the year of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The film based on the life of Robert Oppenheimer clashed with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and created mayhem at the box office with humongous box office numbers. It not only broke previous records but also set the stage for a super successful year at the cinema, as it managed to get audiences to the theatres.

As the year draws to a close, Christopher Nolan, the director behind the film Oppenheimer, reflected on the effect his film had on cinema lovers. The film beat major Hollywood tent[poles like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and every superhero movie that released in 2023 to maintain a rock-solid stand at the box office.

Speaking about the phenomena that his latest film was, Nolan said, “I’ve just made a three-hour film about Robert Oppenheimer which is R-rated and half in black-and-white – and it made a billion dollars. Of course, I think films are doing great.”

He added, “The crazy thing is that it’s literally the most successful film I’ve ever made. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and in the United Kingdom it’s my highest-grossing film. So I feel great about the state of the movie business, based on my own experience. But also based on seeing other movies break out, seeing audiences come back. The audience’s desire to be surprised, to see something new, to see something they did not know they wanted, that’s always been the most powerful force in theatrical film. So it was wonderful to see that this year.”

And there were two screens – one five-perf 70mm, one 15-perf – and we went from one to the other. When we walked into the back of the IMAX screen, it was just as the Trinity test was coming to its conclusion. It was absolutely packed; every seat was filled. To be in the back of that theatre in that moment of silence, before the sound washes over the audience… you could hear a pin drop. It was a really remarkable experience. Quite overwhelming, really.”

Cameron Diaz recently appeared on a podcast and rubbished all rumours of co-star Jamie Foxx being “crazy” on the set of their Netflix film Back in Action. It was during the filming of this movie when Jamie was hospitalised for a medical emergency. Soon after he was hospitalised, there were reports that the actor was “making everyone miserable” and that Cameron had told everyone, “I was never gonna make another movie again because of him.”

Cameron appeared on a recent episode of the podcast Lipstick on the Rim.

Rubbishing these rumours, Cameron said on the podcast, “I really hate all of the things that were being said about our set at the time. You just want to scream at the top of your lungs, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ … Jamie is, like, the cheerleader for the entire crew. Everybody loves him. We have so much fun on the set with him and he’s just a professional on every level.”

Cameron defended Jamie and said that, unlike these baseless rumours, she “had a blast” working with him on Back in Action. The actress makes her return to films after nearly a decade of staying away from cinema.

She said, “Jamie is the best. I love that guy so much. He’s such a special person and he’s so talented, so much fun. The hiccups that happened throughout production are the natural kinds of things that happen. But nothing got delayed other than, obviously, toward the end. And that’s something that is not my place to speak about.”

She added, “When I see and hear people trying to take another person down like that … [Jamie is] so classy. He’s like, ‘Nope. Just let them [talk]’. Still, it just really made me angry.”

She did not mention Jamie’s medical incident but added that he is “thriving” now.

The Netflix film Back in Action will have Cameron Dian reunite with Jamie Foxx. They worked together in the 1999 sports drama Any Given Sunday and 2014’s Annie remake, which was her final film role until now. The film is expected to be released in 2024.
