Indian web series Kaala Paani is one of the best we saw this year. The survival drama based against the backdrop of the islands of Andaman & Nicobar told the story of a new illness (much like COVID-19) that took everyone by surprise after the islands started witnessing strange occurrences of death. With a unique plot and credible performances, Kaala Paani was among the finest we saw this year. As we wrap up the year, WION got in touch with Rakesh Yadav who worked as a production designer on the set of the show.

Rakesh Yadav spoke about the visual style of the series, shooting in Andaman islands and the challenges that came with it.

Here are the edited excerpts of the chat:

WION: We thoroughly enjoyed watching Kaala Paani. Can you share some insights into the collaboration between the production design team and the director/cinematographer to achieve the desired visual style?

Rakesh: Filmmaking is all about collaboration. To achieve the desired visual style and atmosphere, every department must bring on their A-game to the shoot. A film first originates in the director’s mind. To create the universe that the director has imagined, a very close collaboration between the cinematographer and production designer is needed because what looks real to the eye, looks unreal to the camera and vice-versa.

WION: Kaala Paani has received critical acclaim for its production design. Are there any specific moments or set pieces that you are particularly proud of?

Rakesh: Kaala Paani is very close to my heart so to pick any particular scene would be cruel to other scenes but since you asked, I would say that the final look and feel that we achieved with the creation of the interiors of a Japanese bunker is something I am very proud of. Andaman has this World War II-era Japanese bunkers scattered around the island to keep a close watch on the Indian Ocean. They were built on higher grounds to watch over as much area as possible. When we set about creating the interiors of the bunker in the studio, we had to make sure that we keep in mind the elevation and architectural feel of the World War II Japanese bunkers. We went through as much documentary evidence as possible to grasp the intricacies of a bunker.

Difference between Indian and Western productions

WION: What are some of the key differences in production design between Indian and International cinema, and how do you navigate those differences?

Rakesh: The differences between Indian cinema and International cinema are mostly two-fold. Firstly, the amount of preparation that an international crew does to achieve the specific look is something still missing from our side. We sometimes leave a few things for the last minute or want something new on the day of shooting. Secondly, budget constraint is an issue because it makes us compromise on a lot of elements which would have made our cinematic world more authentic.

I would also like to add -- with the coming of international OTT platforms, we are closing this gap very rapidly.

Technology in Filmmaking

WION: With technology making inroads within the film industry, how has this affected the way you approach production design, especially with the use of CGI and special effects?

Rakesh: A lot of things were impossible to do till a few years back. CGI and special effects have supplemented the effort of a production designer to achieve those things. Though some people suggest that CGI will one day take over the production design department, I strongly disagree with it. A good CGI is only possible when the production design team has created the foundation upon which CGI can work. I am actually looking forward to that day when CGI will become a part of the production design department and not something external.

WION: How do you manage to create stunning visuals while working within budget limitations? Did you face any such limitations with Kaala Paani?

Rakesh: Budget limitations will always be there because we need to have those boundaries to set the rules of the game. It only tends to disfavour us when things are not planned accordingly or when some last-minute hiccups come up. For example, in Kaala Paani we wanted to shoot inside the Cellular Jail but when we were denied the permission to do so, we needed to create a new sequence in the series because making the set of Cellular Jail for one sequence was not feasible.

WION: Is there any creative person from your field that you look up to for inspiration?

Rakesh: In India, it was late Nitin Desai. His work will inspire every filmmaking student in India forever. The other two production designers that I look up to is Rick Carter and Nathan Crowley.

Future of Production Design in India

WION: Could you share any insights into the future of production design in Indian cinema and how it might evolve in the coming years?

Rakesh: I feel that in the coming years, production design will get the attention it deserves and will go on to become the one of the most talked-about aspects of filmmaking among the general masses.

Rakesh has been associated with a multitude of projects including Tumbbad, Laal Kaptaan, Serious Men, and Ship of Theseus, among others. Kaala Paani season one featured a stellar cast including Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker, Amey Wagh, Sukant Goel, Vikas Kumar, Arushi Sharma, Radhika Mehrotra, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Poornima Indrajith, among others. The second season will also be available on Netflix soon.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to get digital premiere soon

Exactly a week left for Christmas and if you haven’t started planning for the big day already, here’s your cue to bring out all of last year’s supplies and give them a unique spin with us for a whole new Christmas vibe.

Since ‘organic’ is the word for 2023 and also ‘sustainable’ and ‘earthy’, we have a list of things you can do to amp up the festive fever.

It’s the year to focus on wood-themed decor items. Think pinecones, rustic wooden ornaments for home, garlands made of twigs and berries.

This year we continue to push the real vs anything plastic. So we suggest you buy a real Christmas tree vs the plastic ones. They need not be huge. You can start with a baby tree too.

Pink and Barbie go hand in hand, much like the cliche. But since the Mattel doll-based story made a resurgence this year, why not bring the pink decor to your homes? Think ribbons, wreaths, flowers.

Vintage toys and classic holiday motifs never go out of style. Dig in a little and you might find something at home that will automatically add to the theme, unless you’re a minimalist and have given away all things vintage.

Last but definitely not least, be original in your decor and theme ideas. Nothing spells holiday and Christmas like spontaneity and originality.

A Guide to Christmas Decor 2023 Trends

If you’re someone who watched all Twilight films, you’d know Taylor Lautner’s fandom at the time when the films were a rage, was real. Taylor Lautner played the role of Jacob Black in the first Twilight film. According to the Lautner, he was supposed to have been recast by another actor, someone who was bulkier and more muscular than him for the role.

Taylor revealed this on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast. “My character in the first book is supposed to be like a 16-year-old little scrawny boy, and in the middle of ‘New Moon,’ he transforms into this 25-year-old looking built, muscular man,” he said.

So while Taylor Lautner fit the profile of the character in the first book, the makers wanted to recast for his role so that they could rope in a more muscular guy. Taylor revealed that they were to “cast like a mid-20s guy to carry on and be Jacob for the rest of the franchise.” “I had to fight for my role back,” he said.

Taylor was determined to keep the Twilight role with him and hence began “hardcore working out for about nine months.” This led to him gaining 20-25 pounds. “I was ready, so when we got that call, my team was like, ‘Have you seen him recently?'” he said.

Taylor still had to re-audition for the role.

Later in the podcast, Taylor Lautner discussed how growing up in the limelight affected his body image. “I dealt in the last five to seven years with a lot of body image issues because in the franchise, not wearing that many clothes, you know. And I also was 17, 18, 19 years old, and it was a lot easier to have a body like that, but that’s what most of the world knows me as,” he said.

The Barbie Q&A saw many stars come together. The last time actors from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants got together was when America Ferrera welcomed her first child in 2018.

As for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, there were talks of a third film but it has not materialised so far. In 2022, Amber Tamblyn explained that there were complications in getting a third instalment made, primarily because the four women have families to consider when taking on any new projects, joking that between all of them, they had like “870 children.”

Previously Tamblyn said, “There’s a lot going on with the project. We’ve been working on it for, I don’t know, it feels like a decade at this point. My hope is that it’ll get made at some point.
WION: How was it like sharing the screen with Pankaj Tripathi?

Jaya: He’s not only a good artist but a very good human being which is why I think genuinity reflects in his work. He takes utmost delight in his work and is fuss-free on the set. I loved working with him. In the beginning, I was a bit nervous to collaborate with him but he made me very comfortable. Pankaj Ji makes things very comfortable. He is very fond of good food. We had a lot of talking points as he’s quite abreast with Bangladesh’s political, social issues. We also shared a common interest in gardening. We bonded over that.

WION: On another note, do you often come to India?

Jaya: India feels like home. I have been working in India for sometime now in Bengali films. So there was no real difference working in Kadak Singh apart from being a project in a different language. On the set, everyone was very welcoming.

WION: If given a chance, would you like to do a masala entertainer with any Indian actor in the industry?
