How often are you guilty of buying over-the-counter pills without any prescription? Almost all of us have done this without taking any precautions and thinking of how it could affect our bodies. While OTC (over-the-counter) medications may seem harmless, the indiscriminate use of these drugs can have profound consequences on women's health, raising important questions about their impact on fertility and future pregnancies.

Over-the-counter pills, readily available, offer a quick solution to common ailments such as headaches, colds, and pain. However, the ease of access and the absence of a healthcare professional's guidance often lead individuals, especially women, to self-prescribe without understanding the potential risks involved.

Discussing what this could do to women’s bodies, Dr. Manisha Ranjan, Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida shared some important points concerning this matter:

Hormonal disruptions

One of the lesser-known dangers of random OTC pill consumption is the potential for hormonal disruptions. Certain medications, even the ones you think are harmless, can interfere with the delicate balance of hormones in a woman's body. This imbalance may manifest as irregular menstrual cycles, disrupted ovulation, or even more severe reproductive health issues.

Impact on fertility

For women trying to conceive, the implications of abuse of OTC pill usage can be significant. Studies suggest that certain medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may contribute to ovulatory dysfunction, potentially hindering the ability to get pregnant.

Unseen threats to pregnancy

The journey of pregnancy is delicate, and the random ingestion of OTC pills can pose unseen threats to both the developing foetus and the expectant mother. Some medications may increase the risk of birth defects, complications during pregnancy, or even miscarriage.

Why consulting a healthcare professional is necessary

Seeking advice from healthcare professionals before taking over-the-counter (OTC) pills, especially when planning a pregnancy, is a prudent and indispensable step. Healthcare professionals have the expertise to assess an individual's health history, identify potential contraindications, and offer personalised guidance tailored to specific needs.

This is crucial in the context of pregnancy planning, as certain OTC medications may have subtle yet impactful effects on reproductive health, hormonal balance, and foetal development. By consulting with healthcare professionals, individuals can make informed decisions, mitigate potential risks, and create a solid foundation for a healthy and successful pregnancy journey. T

To address the growing concern of random OTC pill usage among women, there is a pressing need for educational initiatives. Informative campaigns should highlight the potential risks associated with uninformed medication practices, emphasising the importance of consulting healthcare professionals for appropriate guidance.

A lot goes through a pregnant woman’s body as hormones bring about a myriad of changes including weight gain, mood volatility, imbalances and much more than what we see on the surface level.

As we discuss what goes in a pregnant woman’s body, thyroid gland deserves special attention. In January, which is worldwide known as Thyroid Awareness Month, which raises awareness to thyroid-related diseases and thyroid cancer, we take a look at how expecting mothers can keep the gland in check.

Thyroid imbalances, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, can significantly impact both the expectant mother and her unborn child. We spoke to Dr Sonal Singhal, Senior Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Gurugram who told us about how expecting mothers can manage their thyroid health for a smoother pregnancy journey.

Hypothyroidism: A call for Hormonal Harmony

Hypothyroidism, characterised by an underactive thyroid gland, can present challenges during pregnancy. Insufficient production of thyroid hormones may lead to complications such as preeclampsia, anaemia, and low birth weight. The cognitive development of the baby is also at risk.

For expectant mothers, the key lies in early detection and management. Regular check-ups with healthcare providers, including gynaecologists and endocrinologists, ensure that synthetic thyroid hormones are administered to maintain optimal levels. Continuous monitoring through thyroid function tests is crucial throughout pregnancy to adapt treatment plans as needed.

Hyperthyroidism: Striking the Right Balance

On the flip side, hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid gland, comes with its own set of challenges for expectant mothers. Increased risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, and potential cardiovascular complications necessitate vigilant management.

Gynaecologists work hand-in-hand with endocrinologists to prescribe antithyroid medications that keep hyperthyroidism in check. Regular monitoring and open communication with the healthcare team are vital to ensure both maternal and foetal well-being.

Antibodies and Miscarriage Risk: Establishing the Connection

Thyroid antibodies, specifically anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, can indicate autoimmune thyroid disorders. Elevated levels of these antibodies may increase the risk of miscarriage, underlining the importance of thorough preconception evaluations. Expectant mothers should consider having their thyroid function evaluated before conception, allowing for necessary adjustments to medication and treatment plans.

Empowering Through Knowledge

Knowledge is paramount. Understanding the intricate relationship between thyroid health and pregnancy complications allows women to take an active role in their well-being. By staying informed and proactive, expectant mothers can navigate the challenges of thyroid imbalances, promoting the well-being of both themselves and their precious little ones.

Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston reveals that he was once accused of “copping a feel” by an A-lister with whom he was shooting a sex scene. Calling it an “abuse of power”, Christopher said, “I did a sex scene with an A-list actress – not Nicole Kidman, who was brilliant – and she implied, in front of the crew, that I was copping a feel. Because she didn’t like me.”

Upset with how things played out, Christopher revealed that he was “fortunate that it happened to me before the Harvey Weinstein stuff came to light, so I wasn’t put in the stocks for it. But I’ve never felt more betrayed by a fellow actor than I did that day.”

Celebrating Ramayana's Wisdom With Devdutt's Suno Ramayana

As the world turns its gaze towards India for the consecration ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya today, let us take a moment to reflect on the teachings of the age-old tale of the Ramayana. Devdutt Pattanaik offers a fresh take on the timeless teachings and invaluable lessons of the cherished Indian epic in his Audible podcast, Suno Ramayana Devdutt Pattanaik ke Saath.

The purpose of life is not just to feed yourself, but it is also to feed others

Devdutt discusses how Lord Ram, following his return from the tirth yatra, found himself contemplating the purpose of life. Amidst this, he sought guidance from Yog Vashishth. It was then that he learned a profound truth - the purpose of life is not merely self-sustenance but also contributing to others.

Whoever gives a hundred percent commitment, is worthy of praise and appreciation

When reflecting on the construction Ram Setu bridge, he points out that many creatures and friends of nature, including a humble squirrel, joined forces to support the monumental task. Lord Ram's acknowledgment of every contribution, irrespective of size and strength, became a profound teaching.

When we search for God within us, it leads us to path of becoming dharmic

According to Devdutt, there is a divine presence within every being. In his podcast, via examples from Ramayan, he encouraages individuals to seek God within themselves and follow a righteous path.

What Is Melanoma, Skin Cancer Duchess of York Has Been Diagnosed With?

The Duchess of York has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma following the removal of a cancerous mole during treatment for breast cancer. Sarah Ferguson had several moles removed and investigated while having reconstructive surgery which followed a mastectomy.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body. It starts in the melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that make the pigment that gives skin its colour. The pigment is called melanin.

The main cause of melanoma is ultraviolet light, which comes from the sun or sunbeds.

Factors such as age, pale skin, a large number of moles, and a family history of skin cancer can increase one’s chances of getting melanoma.

You should look for signs of a new mole/s developing on your body. Also, check for changes in existing moles, large moles, and even moles that are either an uneven shape or a mixture of colours.

You can lower their chances of developing melanoma by covering your arms and legs when exposed to the sun and by wearing sunscreen.

The Berlin Film Festival 2024 is out with its lineup. Some of the films that find a place in this year’s lineup are Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios’s English-language feature debut La Concina, German director Andreas Dresen’s From Hilde with Love and more. The 74th Berlin International Film Festival unveiled its full lineup at its official press conference in the House of World Cultures in Berlin. Berlinale managing director Mariëtte Rissenbeek and artistic director Carlo Chatrian presented the films that will compete for this year’s Golden and Silver Bears both in the competition and encounters sections. Among others in the lineup include Berlin regulars like Olivier Assayas’ Suspended Time, Russian documentarian Victor Kossakovsky’ Architecton, and Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey which will compete for this year’s Golden Bear. We will also get to see Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy open the 74th Berlinale on February 15 with the Irish drama Small Things Like These from director Tim Mielants. Murphy will be seen playing a man living in 1980s Ireland who discovers the shocking abuse taking place in “Magdalene laundries”, asylums run by the Roman Catholic Church for “fallen women.” The full lineup for the 74th Berlinale: COMPETITION Small Things Like These by Tim Mielants (Opening Night Film) Another End by Piero Messina Architecton by Victor Kossakovsky Black Tea by Abderrahmane Sissako La Cocina by Alonso Ruizpalacios Dahomey by Mati Diop A Different Man by Aaron Schimberg L’Empire (The Empire) by Bruno Dumont Gloria! by Margherita Vicario Hors du temps (Suspended Time) by Olivier Assayas In Liebe, Eure Hilde (From Hilde, With Love) by Andreas Dresen Keyke mahboobe man (My Favourite Cake) by Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam Langue Etrangere by Claire Burger Me el Ain (Who Do I Belong to) by Meryam Joobeur Pepe by Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Arias Shambhala by Min Bahadur Bham Sterben by Matthias Glasner Des Teufels Bad (The Devil’s Bath) by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz Vogter (Sons) by Gustav Moller Yeohaengjaui pilyo (A Traveler’s Needs) by Hong Sangsoo Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon have been "texting" each other about Big Little Lies S3 ENCOUNTERS Arcadia by Yorgos Zois Cidade; Campo by Juliana Rojas Demba by Mamadou Dia Direct Action by Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell Dormir de olhos abertos (Sleep With Your Eyes Open) by Nele Wohlatz The Fable by Raam Reddy Une famille (A Family) by Christine Angot Favoriten by Ruth Beckermann Ivo by Eva Trobisch Khamyazeye bozorg (The Great Yawn) by Aliyar Rasti Kong fang jian li de nv ren (Some Rain Must Fall) by Qiu Yang Maos no fogo (Hands in the Fire) by Margarida Gil Matt and Mara by Kazik Radwanski Through the Graves the Wind Is Blowing by Travis Wilkerson Tu me abrasas (You Burn Me) by Matias Pineiro 2024 Berlinale Sidebar Lineups (Previously Announced) Panorama Afterwar by Birgitte Stærmose Panorama Dokumente | World premiere | Documentary Form Alle die Du bist (Every You Every Me) by Michael Fetter Nathansky Germany / Spain 2024 Panorama | World premiere All Shall Be Well by Ray Yeung Hong Kong, China 2024 Panorama | World premiere Andrea lässt sich scheiden (Andrea Gets a Divorce) by Josef Hader Austria 2024 Panorama | World premiere À quand l’Afrique? Berlinale 2024: Cillian Murphy’s Irish drama to open; full lineup out

Big Little Lies is coming closer to season 3 release as actor Nicole Kidman confirmed to Variety that she has constantly been messaging castmate Reese Witherspoon about it. Kidman attended the premiere of her new series Expats as she discussed Big Little Lies season 3.

Speaking to Variety on what's happening with Big Little Lies, the actress said, “We’re at work on it. She also said that she and Reese Witherspoon are “texting every day” about the third season.

"And there’s a timeline and we’re doing it," she added.

Comedian Dave Chappelle is miffed with what Katt Williams is doing. Dave recently spoke about Katt Williams’ recent Club Shay Shay interview in which he insulted other Black comedians.

Dave recently took the stage at the Hollywood Improv and said, “What part of the game is this? He only ethered niggas. He didn’t say anything about any of these white boys. None of these white boys function like that. Katt is one of the best painters in the game. So why are you drawing ugly pictures of us? Stop.”

On Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Katt Williams made comments about Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer, Tiffany Haddish, and Steve Harvey, among others. The interview went viral and was even included in a recent Saturday Night Live skit.

Taking a dig at Williams, Dave Chappelle said, “Hurt people hurt people, but I am a hurt person that never hurt people, and he does it all the time: ‘Fuck this one, and fuck that one, and fuck this one’. But, nigga, I didn’t hear anything that you did wrong. He didn’t do anything wrong? Katt didn’t do anything wrong?… Katt was talking about shit that niggas did to other niggas, but not about anything that niggas did to him.”

The comedian added that Katt should stop doing this since “all of us are trying to be in a better situation.”
