Nirmala Sitharaman: A Look At Her Collection Of Handloom Sarees

India’s Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget for 2024, and while there’s a lot of chatter around its key points, here we are taking a look at her sartorial choices for the occasion. The finance minister is known to have an exquisite collection of sarees, a traditional garment worn by Indian women.

Sitharaman wore a blue and cream printed silk saree. The saree had intricate motifs all over with Kantha embroidery. The embroidery is a specialised kind of thread design done mostly by the artisans of West Bengal.

She wore a red and black temple border saree with Kasuti threadwork all over.

Sitharaman wore a rust and maroon handloom Bomkai saree. The work is typically weaved by specialised artisans in Odisha.

She wore a classic red and off-white silk Pochampally sari with ikat patterns around the pallu with a green border.

Sitharaman opted for a bright yellow-gold silk saree. Yellow is often considered a sacred colour which stands for prosperity.

Margot Robbie finally opened up about the much-in-news Oscars snub for her and director Greta Gerwig for their parts in the globally successful film Barbie. Both Margot Robbie and Greta didn’t earn a nod for their film at the Oscars this year. However, the film managed to earn eight nods, including the coveted Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

This is what Margot Robbie said about the Oscars snub

It was during a SAG-AFTRA discussion that Margot was asked about the Best Actress Oscars snub and the outrage around it. Addressing the controversy around it, Margot said, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” before adding that she is more upset about Greta’s non-inclusion.

Margot said, “Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

The actress, who was applauded by fans and critics alike for her role as the Mattel doll in the film Barbie, added that despite all this, she was “beyond ecstatic” with the film’s eight Oscar nominations. She said, “Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

The movie has shifted culture: Margot

“People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience,” she continued. “Whether it’s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much pink I can see in this room right now…I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie has had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.”

When the Oscars nominations were announced, the most notable omissions in the list were Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig (from Best Actress and Best Director lists). This followed backlash against The Academy jury on social media where people dissed them for not including their names.

Margot Robbie dismisses Oscars snub, breaks silence on the outrage

Much has happened in the lives of Rust actors ever since the fatal 2021 episode when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot dead by a misfire from a real gun. In connection with the case, producer and star of the film, Alec Baldwin was charged with a new set of manslaughter charges. Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty.

Alec Baldwin was holding a Colt .45 when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. It was during the filming of Rust in New Mexico.

Alec Baldwin denies all charges

Ever since charges were slapped on several people present on the set, Alec has repeatedly denied responsibility, insisting he did not pull the trigger on the gun, which should not have been loaded with a live round.

After the incident took place, there were calls for tightening of norms and regulations around bringing a live firearm on the set of a film or show. Many also countered this with an argument that it was the sloppy management on the set that led to this and not the lack of rules.

Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin’s lawyers have filed a request for a quick trial to "minimise public vilification and suspicion and to avoid the hazards of proving his innocence that often arise after a lengthy delay in prosecution.”

Initial manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin were dropped in April last year, due to what prosecutors called "new facts" that demanded "further investigation and forensic analysis." This led to calling for a grand jury which handed him fresh charges. If found guilty, Alec could be jailed for up to 18 months.

Alec Baldwin faces two alternative counts of involuntary manslaughter -- one involving "negligent use of a firearm" and one of acting "without due caution or circumspection."

SAG-AFTRA criticises new charges against actor

In all this, the actors' union SAG-AFTRA has taken Alec’s side and criticised the charges. The union said, "An actor's job is not to be a firearms or weapons expert. Firearms are provided for use on set under the guidance of multiple expert professionals directly responsible for the safe and accurate operation of that firearm."

Alec Baldwin is currently on bail.

Alec Baldwin pleads not guilty to new Rust shooting charge

Showtime has been sued by the estate of country star Tammy Wynette’s fifth husband, George Richey over his portrayal in the miniseries George & Tammy. Richey’s heirs claim that the miniseries has projected him as the “villain” of the love story between Wynette and George Jones. This they claim is in clear violation of a previously signed non-disparagement agreement with Georgette Jones, the daughter of the said couple who also happens to play a key part in the miniseries.

In response to the lawsuit, a Showtime spokesperson told Variety, “We see no plausible basis for any claim against Showtime.”

The suit was filed in Delaware court on behalf of Sheila Slaughter Richey, the executor of her late husband’s estate. She married George Richey in 2001, three years after the death of his previous wife, Wynette. George Richey died in 2010.

What is the lawsuit about?

The lawsuit claims that the miniseries George & Tammy defames the late Richey in multiple ways. It claims that it depicts Richey “as a devious husband who abused Wynette and Richey’s prior wife, facilitated and encouraged Wynette’s addiction to prescription painkillers, and engaged in financial and managerial manipulation of Wynette.”

It also objects to how they have shown Richey as someone who got Wynette addicted to prescription painkillers “to create a dependency,” including injecting her with Demerol on their wedding day.

This issue dates back to 2015 when a civil litigation between Georgette Jones and the Richey estate took place. This was when Richey’s third wife and daughter asked for redress as a result of Jones’ 2011 book, The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George. When that dispute was settled in 2019, the attorneys say, Jones agreed not to make disparaging remarks against George Richey or his family members.

They point to interviews Jones did promoting the miniseries in which, asked about Richie’s possible complicity in things going badly in her mother’s life, she would beg off answering the questions, saying things like, “We all had to sign an agreement, all of us together, to say that we will not discuss each other any further, so for my own sake, legally, I’m not allowed to really discuss anything about Richey or his wife after Mom, Sheila.”

The lawsuit now wants Paramount and Showtime to withdraw George & Tammy from any form of distribution, and to be held responsible for restitution in an amount to be determined in a trial.

Elisabeth Moss is going to be a mother soon as The Handmaid’s Tale actress confirmed her pregnancy during an appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live! She looked visibly pregnant as she walked out from the side of the stage and took a seat next to the host.

As soon as she sat down, Jimmy addressed the elephant in the room and asked, “Are you pregnant or just an incredibly committed method actor?” She didn’t even take a moment and replied, “A little bit of both.”

Elisabeth didn’t talk much about her pregnancy aside from the fact that the whole pregnancy is going well for her and that she’s been “really lucky”. She did not name the baby’s father but did ask Kimmel for advice.

On a piece of advice he had to give to the actress, the father of four reiterated what Bill Murray had told him once, “He said, ‘Bring Christmas lights to hang up,'” referring to the delivery room’s lack of soft lighting. He added that Murray also suggested battery-powered candles. “Because the lighting is terrible in the room. It’s Walmart-style lighting for this blessed event that’s going to happen and you don’t want that.”

In the trailer, she faces powerful men and the system which protects them time and again. It highlights Vaishali Singh's relentless fight for justice against the corrupt administration. She is assisted by Bhaskar Sinha, portrayed by Sanjay Mishra.

Bhumi Pednekar on playing a journalist in Bhakshak

Speaking about her role to WION exclusively, Bhumi Pednekar said, "I've always held the profession in very high regard. I've always been in close quarters with the media. When I started researching for my role, I realised that the integrity that the job comes with, the passion the profession requires, and the dedication the community needs, especially when you need to stick to what you believe in and take that forward through the years, making sure that the right version of truth comes out without it being coloured, biased...it's such a powerful medium. It is the only way we the common people can get information. Media has the power to change narratives, and correct narratives, so it comes with so much responsibility. That's why I was thrilled to get this role."

Bhumi is proud of playing such an important role. She added, "Vaishali is a woman journalist in a small town in India. I didn't even know that there is a circuit of such journalists in the country. They are the ones who crack stories before they get picked up. It's a job that requires guts and glory."

James Gunn has managed to get new energy in DC Universe with the addition of House of Dragon actress Milly Alcock but not everyone thinks it's a wise decision to get someone on board without having a director in place for the project.

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn thinks it’s not the best decision to get an actress on board to pilot any project without finalising the director who will give the story its direction. He, however, is happy that the House of Dragon star Milly Alcock has been roped in to play DC’s Supergirl. Her character will take ahead the story of Superman: Legacy.

What Matthew Vaughn has to say

Expressing his interest in helming the project, Matthew Vaughn said, “I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan,” Vaughn said. “Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”

He continued, “I was asked about doing ‘The Flash’ way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing … so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”

It’s time we took the misuse of deepfake technology to target individuals seriously and looks like the US Congress is. After Taylor Swift became a victim of deepfake pornography and her search results on X were polluted with explicit nude deepfake images of the singer, a bipartisan group of US senators introduced a bill that would criminalise the spread of nonconsensual, sexualised images generated by artificial intelligence.

What does this new US bill against deepfake pornography mean?

With the new bill introduced, this would allow victims depicted in nude or sexually explicit “digital forgeries” to seek a civil penalty against “individuals who produced or possessed the forgery with intent to distribute it” or anyone who received the material knowing it was not made with consent.

Among the people involved with this bill are Dick Durbin, the US Senate majority whip, and senators Lindsey Graham, Amy Klobuchar and Josh Hawle. The bill is labelled as the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act of 2024, or the Defiance Act.

In a press release, Dick Durban said, “This month, fake, sexually-explicit images of Taylor Swift that were generated by artificial intelligence swept across social media platforms. Although the imagery may be fake, the harm to the victims from the distribution of sexually explicit ‘deepfakes’ is very real.”

Josh Hawle added, “Nobody – neither celebrities nor ordinary Americans – should ever have to find themselves featured in AI pornography. Innocent people have a right to defend their reputations and hold perpetrators accountable in court. This bill will make that a reality.”

Deepfakes are AI-made images or videos of real people. Over the past few months, these have become increasingly common and many celebrities worldwide have been affected by this. Internet users can remove a person’s clothes or show sexually objectionable activity using the technology. Using AI, people can either swap faces or modify existing images of the celebrity online.
