At least nine people have died of monkeypox in Congo in 2022 and Nigeria has recorded its first death from the disease, as more than 20 countries struggle with the recent disease outbreak.

Dr Aime Alongo, chief of the Sankuru health division in Congo, said Monday that 465 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the nation, making it one of the worst-hit in West and Central Africa, where the disease is endemic.

The persistence of the disease in Congo is due to the consumption of dead monkeys and rodents, Dr Alongo said.

"The residents enter the forest, pick up the corpses of monkeys, bats and rodents which are the reservoirs of monkeypox," the official added, urging those with monkeypox symptoms to visit a health centre to isolate themselves.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced that in 2022 it has confirmed 21 out of 66 suspected cases of the disease, which is usually endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa.

&nbsp;
A spike in monkeypox cases reported in Europe and the U.S. has generated concerns among those countries, many of whom have not recorded a single case of the disease in years. Over 250 cases of the disease have been reported in more than 20 countries not usually known to have outbreaks, the World Health Organization said.

Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic.

"The biggest challenge that you have with a disease such as monkeypox is that it is uncommon and the perceived risk by the population about how dangerous this condition is has been very low ... that is why ... we have conducted awareness training and advocacy training to increase the level of awareness of health care workers," Adetifa said.

The Pakistani authorities and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have decided to extend the current ceasefire for an indefinite time period till the current peace talks between the two sides that have been going on in Kabul since the start of this month conclude.

The talks, facilitated by the Afghan Taliban regime, have resulted in the extension of the ceasefire between the forces and the Taliban on two occasions.

Both the parties continue to hold the dialogue and have formed a three-member committee, with representatives from each side to iron out the differences. These talks will be moderated by Haqqani network chief Sirajuddin Haqqani.

In contrast to previous failed negotiations, the Pakistan government delegation expressed and demonstrated its seriousness this time, as it agreed to some of TTP demands, which would work better towards confidence-building measures for formal and more structured negotiations.

In the peace talks, the TTP is represented by Mufti Ghofran, Commander Zarar and Omar Khalid Khorasani while the Pakistani delegation comprises senior military and intelligence officials.

Since the government of the Taliban came to power, the attacks on Pakistani forces from across the border increased considerably, resulting in the loss of dozens of lives. In a bid to stop these attacks, Pakistan had conducted a drone strike inside Afghanistan as well.

A UN report released last week claimed that the TTP was the militant group that benefitted most from the Afghan Taliban’s ascent to power. According to the report, TTP had a strength of about 3,000 to 4,000 fighters in the neighbouring country.

Pakistan government and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan agree on indefinite ceasefire

The new legislation would require women in Japan to seek their partner’s consent before being prescribed the abortion pill, which will reportedly be approved late this year. Under Japan’s 1948 Maternal Protection Law, consent is already required for surgical abortions, with very few exceptions.

This move comes three decades after abortion pills were approved in the United Kingdom.

“In principle, we believe that spousal consent is necessary, even if an abortion is induced by an oral medication,” Yasuhiro Hashimoto, a senior health ministry official, told a parliamentary committee earlier this month, according to Bloomberg.

Kumi Tsukahara, a founding member of Action for Safe Abortion Japan, said: “‘Spousal consent’ becomes an issue when there is a disagreement with the spouse or the spouse is forcing the woman to give birth against her will.

“For women, being forced into a pregnancy they do not want is violence and a form of torture.”

Cases have been seen where doctors in Japan refused to approve an abortion for women who had been sexually assaulted, forcing health ministry officials to write to the Japan Medical Association to clarify that consent is not required in rape cases.

The delay in approving the pill tramples women’s reproductive rights, and the possible $780 cost, reflects the priorities of the male-dominated parliament.

Oral contraceptives were only legalised in 1999 after a drawn-out nine-year legal debate, Japanese politicians took just six months to approve Viagra, the erectile dysfunction medication produced by Pfizer Inc.

"In principle, we believe that spousal consent is necessary, even if an abortion is induced by an oral medication," said Yasuhiro Hashimoto, the head of the ministry's child and family policy bureau.

But Mizuho Fukushima, a politician from the opposition Social Democratic Party, was critical of the ministry's position, asking the hearing, "Why should a woman need her partner's approval? It's her body."

"Women are not the property of men", she added. "Their rights, not those of the men&nbsp;should be protected."

Around 145,000 surgical abortions were carried out in Japan in 2020, which is one of only Il nations that still require the consent of the woman's partner for the procedure to go ahead. This requirement has been criticised by the World Health Organisation.

Two killed and 20 injured as two colliding cars ram into crowd in Nebraska

President of Georgia’s breakaway region, South Ossetia, on Monday, scrapped plans to hold a referendum on joining Russia which his predecessor Anatoly Bibilov had scheduled for July 17.

South Ossetia was at the centre of the Russian-Georgian war in 2008 after which the Kremlin recognised the territory as an independent state and stationed military bases there.

In a decree issued Monday, the Moscow-controlled enclave's president Alan Gagloev invoked "uncertainty of the legal consequences of the issue submitted to a referendum".

The decree also stressed "the inadmissibility of a unilateral decision of a referendum on issues affecting the legitimate rights and interests of the Russian Federation".

Gagloev ordered, "to hold, without delay, consultations with the Russian side on the entire range of issues related to the further integration of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation".

On May 13, Gagloev's predecessor, Anatoly Bibilov, signed a decree on holding the referendum, citing the region's "historic aspiration" to join Russia, his office said at the time.

&nbsp;

Bibilov lost his bid for re-election earlier this month. Russia has expressed hope that Gagloev will preserve "continuity" in ties with Moscow.

Tbilisi has previously denounced as "unacceptable" plans by South Ossetia to hold a referendum on joining Russia.

In August 2008, Russian forces launched an all-out invasion of Georgia, which was battling pro-Russian militia in South Ossetia, after they shelled Georgian villages.
<img alt="South Ossetia on Map" data-align="center" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d2bf4cd9-b281-487f-9cab-a7e3e021085d" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/FMiJ8paWQAEJRB5.jpeg" />

The fighting ended five days later with a European Union-mediated ceasefire but claimed more than 700 lives and displaced tens of thousands of ethnic Georgians.

The war's aftermath saw the Kremlin recognise the independence of South Ossetia and another separatist region, Abkhazia, which have since remained under Russia's military control.

The conflict marked the culmination of tensions with the Kremlin over staunchly pro-Western Tbilisi's bid to join the European Union and North Atlantic&nbsp;Treaty Organisation.

In March, the Hague-based International Criminal Court prosecutor, Karim Khan, applied for arrest warrants for three current and former South Ossetian officials in connection with war crimes committed against ethnic Georgians.

The alleged crimes included torture, inhuman treatment, illegal detention, violation of personal dignity, hostage-taking and illegal transfers of people.

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia was responsible for human rights violations in the war's aftermath.

The conflict marked the culmination of tensions with the Kremlin over staunchly pro-Western Tbilisi's bid to join the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia ditches referendum on joining Russia

The Union government intends to develop a framework to check fake reviews on e-commerce websites, after a meeting to gauge the magnitude of fake reviews on e-commerce platforms which mislead consumers into buying online services or products and to prepare a roadmap ahead by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) on Friday.

“Traceability by ensuring the authenticity of the reviewer and the associated liability of the platform are the two key issues here. Also, e-com players must disclose how they choose the “most relevant reviews” for display in a fair and transparent manner,” said Secretary DoCA, Shri Rohit Kumar Singh said.

The meeting involved concerned stakeholders like E-Commerce entities, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), Consumer Forums, Law Universities, Lawyers, FICCI, CII, and Consumer Rights Activists.

All the stakeholders agreed that fake reviews are a big challenge and concrete steps need to be taken to prevent this and to protect the interest of the customers.

E-commerce company stakeholders claimed that they already have a mechanism in place to check fake reviews, but added that they wouldn’t mind collaborating with the government to develop a framework.

Consumers rely heavily on e-commerce website reviews to see the opinion and experiences of users who have already purchased the good or service while purchasing a product as it is a virtual shopping experience without any opportunity to physically view or examine the product.

Singh also shared a Press Release of the European Commission dated January 20th, 2022 highlighting the results of an EU-wide screening of online consumer reviews across 223 major websites.

The screening results underline that at least 55% of the websites violate the unfair commercial Practices Directive of the E.U. which requires truthful information to be presented to consumers to make an informed choice.&nbsp;

Further, in 144 out of the 223 websites checked, the authorities could not confirm that traders were doing enough to ensure that reviews were authentic, i.e., if they were posted by consumers who had actually used the product or service that was reviewed.

It has been 50 days since the protests first began in front of the Presidential secretariat at Galle Face greens, an oceanside urban park in Colombo raising the slogan ‘Gota Go Gama.’

To mark the 50th day of the protest a march from Liberty Junction in Kollupitiya to Galle Face started at 2 pm. As per the police, the government has issued an order barring the entry of&nbsp;protesters on several roads and state institutions in the fort area.

People from all walks of life including doctors, and lawyers&nbsp;among others&nbsp;gathered at Galle Face to join the protest.

Sri Lankan protesters have been&nbsp;demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Rajapaksa administration amid deepening economic crisis in the country. Earlier this month Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had resigned amid mass protests.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis with the country’s inflation rate reaching 33.8 per cent&nbsp;in April 2022, while it still awaits funding from the International Monetary Fund. Till then Sri Lanka intends to depend more upon India’s help, with India having provided aid close to $3 billion to Sri Lanka since the crisis began.

The protests have been going on 24/7 since it began on April 9, despite bad weather conditions. On May 9, the protests turned violent after government supporters attacked peaceful-anti government protestors&nbsp;resulting in human rights violations by the government.

The island nation is suffering its worst economic meltdown since independence&nbsp;with shortages of fuel and other vital goods amid large scale protests in the country.&nbsp;
