The 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez, a Texas inmate suspected of murdering five people after he escaped from a prison bus was killed by authorities on Thursday.

He escaped the prison bus on May 12 after stabbing the bus driver and later he killed a family of five and stole their truck from a rural weekend cabin.

Lopez crashed the vehicle and then engaged in a firefight with officers, he said.

"He fired several rounds at officers and was armed with an AR-15 and a pistol," Clark said, adding they believe the firearms were likely stolen from the home in Centerville where the family was killed.

The officers fired at Lopez and disabled the bus by shooting the rear tire, the department said. The bus then travelled a short distance before leaving the roadway, where Lopez got out and ran into the woods.

Lopez had been convicted of capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was serving two life sentences for those convictions.

Authorities had said Lopez was allegedly affiliated with the Mexican Mafia.

An Argentinean foundation rescues sea lions tangled in the garbage and raises concerns about ocean pollution. The Mundo Marino Foundation Rescue Center provides assistance and treatment to all sea lions affected by fishing nets and human pollution.

Biologist and head of Mundo Marino Rescue Center, Sergio Rodriguez Heredia said the origin of the pollution affecting sea lions and other species is not only marine waste but also the waste people leave at the beaches.

“In some way, if human actions such as resource extraction and the continuous resources exploitation aren’t handled in an appropriate context, they end up affecting the marine wildlife, and in the long term, as has already been seen, it will end up affecting us," Heredia said.

It is important to highlight the origin of this waste, not only marine waste, it’s not only caused by the improper handling of ships’ waste but also the waste left out by people who have the opportunity to visit the beach, it’s also the urban waste of big cities.&nbsp;

The wounds the animals suffered had to do with nets and in the case of the sea lion in Villa Gesell, it was due to straps (plastic seals), which are those ties usually put on boxes wrappers packed in the ports. These boxes and those types of ties are usually broken when arriving at the port, they are often made of hard plastic, and they end up in the animals’ necks many times.

The distribution of sea lions goes from Isla de Marco, in Uruguay, to Isla Mayorca, in Peru. There are large groups of this species on Uruguayan islands such as Isla de Lobos, Islas de Torres, and Islas de Castillo Grande, in the north of the Rio de la Plata.

Argentinian foundation rescues sea lions from garbage, raises concerns over ocean pollution

Tesla CEO Elon Musk intends to cut about 10% of jobs in the company as has a "super bad feeling" about the economy, he said in an email to executives on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Musk told staff to return to the workplace or leave the company, a demand that has already faced pushback in Germany where the company has a new factory.

"Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week," Musk wrote in that email."If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned."

Inflation in the United States is hovering at 40-year highs and has caused a jump in the cost of living for Americans. At the same time, the Federal Reserve faces the difficult task of dampening demand enough to curb inflation while not causing a recession.

In late May, when asked by a Twitter user whether the economy was approaching a recession, Musk said, "Yes, but this is actually a good thing. It has been raining money on fools for too long. Some bankruptcies need to happen."

Musk's stark warning of a potential recession and the knock-on effect for automakers is the most direct and high-profile forecast of its kind in the industry.&nbsp;

While concerns about the risk of a recession have grown, demand for Tesla cars and other electric vehicles has remained strong and many of the traditional indicators of a downturn - including increasing dealer inventories in the United States - have not materialized.

But Tesla has struggled to restart production at its Shanghai factory after COVID-19 lockdowns forced costly outages at the plant.

Last week, &nbsp;the Shehbaz Sharif government in Pakistan raised fuel and electricity prices, which is a key IMF demand for releasing funds. The government decided to hike the electricity prices by PKR 7, and petrol and diesel by PKR 30 per litre in order to stabilize the country’s economy amid a deepening political crisis.

The Pakistani government is expected to make a fiscal adjustment of around 2.5 per cent of GDP, by increasing the revenue and decreasing the expenditure in the next budget. The agreement on payout will only be made after the next IMF compliant budget, as indicated by Pakistan Finance Minister Miftah Ismail.

It is a tough decision to implement such a budget for the Shehbaz Sharif government, as it could affect their party’s performance in the general assembly elections scheduled for next year.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s government had also applied for a bailout package from IMF but had failed to meet loan conditions. Mr Khan was ousted from the position in April 2022, on grounds of mismanagement through a no-confidence motion.

It has become a regular feature of the Pakistani economy to receive funds and bailout packages from China, but this raises geopolitical security concerns for India as Pakistan, one of its neighbouring countries succumbs to the Chinese ‘debt-trap policy.’

A survey on 'the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and uptake of COVID-19 antiviral treatments during the BA.2/BA.2.12.1 surge, New York City' suggests that the true burden of&nbsp;infection in the United States is 30 times more than in government data.

“It would appear official case counts are under-estimating the true burden of infection by about 30-fold, which is a huge surprise,” said Denis Nash, an author of the study and a distinguished professor of epidemiology at the City University of New York School of Public Health.

“It’s very worrisome. To me, it means that our ability to really understand and get ahead of the virus is undermined,” Nash said.

<div class="ui-state-default" contenteditable="false">
<div class="twitter-block" draggable="false"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZEi2UhNIQAw" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>
<a class="close-mark close-div" href="#" id="jqclosemark">×</a></div>

&nbsp;

During the first covid surge the estimated numbers were 3 to 4 times larger than the official numbers.

“We’ve always known there were undercounts. We didn’t always know by how much they were under-counted,” Dr Nash said.&nbsp;

This severe undercounting could be because most people nowadays are home testing and some others do not get tested at all.

In the past few months, the focus has been on returning to what is being called ‘the normal’, and the focus has mostly shifted to uplifting economies that were badly affected due to first the covid-19 pandemic, and now the Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

The emphasis on advisories and precautions has reduced and people are being told not to worry, as the infection is mild. And this can be a reason for a surge in cases, as untested or asymptomatic people are also carriers of the virus.

A survey on 'the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and uptake of COVID-19 antiviral treatments during the BA.2/BA.2.12.1 surge, New York City' suggests that the true burden of infection in the United States is 30 times more than in government data.

A survey on 'the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and uptake of COVID-19 antiviral treatments during the BA.2/BA.2.12.1 surge, New York City' suggests that the true burden of infection in the United States is 30 times more than in government data. × During the first covid surge the estimated numbers were 3 to 4 times larger than the official numbers. “We’ve always known there were undercounts. We didn’t always know by how much they were under-counted,” Dr Nash said. This severe undercounting could be because most people nowadays are home testing and some others do not get tested at all. In the past few months, the focus has been on returning to what is being called ‘the normal’, and the focus has mostly shifted to uplifting economies that were badly affected due to first the covid-19 pandemic, and now the Russia-Ukraine war. The emphasis on advisories and precautions has reduced and people are being told not to worry, as the infection is mild. And this can be a reason for a surge in cases, as untested or asymptomatic people are also carriers of the virus. US Covid cases likely to be 30 times more than official figures

The World Health Organisation warned on Wednesday that outbreak of endemic diseases such as monkeypox has become more frequent, and it is likely that monkeypox has been spreading undetected for a while now.

More than 550 cases of the disease have been confirmed in over 30 countries.&nbsp;

"Investigations are ongoing, but the sudden appearance of monkeypox in many countries at the same time suggests there may have been undetected transmission for some time," World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.

As climate change contributes to rapidly changing weather conditions like drought, animals and humans are changing their behaviour, including food-seeking habits. As a result of this "ecologic fragility", pathogens that typically circulate in animals are increasingly jumping into humans, he said.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately, that ability to amplify that disease and move it on within our communities is increasing - so both disease emergence and disease amplification factors have increased."

His commentary comes as cases of monkeypox continue to rise outside Africa, where the pathogen is endemic.

But monkeypox, which spreads through close contact, is much less severe, with symptoms typically including a high fever and a blistery chickenpox-like rash that clears up after a few weeks.

WHO warns monkeypox spreading ‘undetected’ for a while now

American multinational pharmaceutical Pzifer completed its emergency use application to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to administer its COVID-19 vaccine to children under the age of 5 on Wednesday.

Pfizer said that its vaccine called ‘Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine’ is 80% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 for younger children.

"Pfizer and BioNTech completed a rolling application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization (EUA) of the 3-µg [microgram] dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years of age (also referred to as 6 months to under 5 years of age) on June 1, 2022," the company said in a statement.

Children under 5 are the last to get vaccines, but it also requires safety measures in place as it is a very sensitive target age group.

"We recognize parents are anxious to have their young children vaccinated against COVID-19 and while the FDA cannot predict how long its evaluation of the data and information will take, we will review any EUA request we receive as quickly as possible using a science-based approach," the FDA said.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, a lot of parents are hesitant to vaccinate children as young as 5, with 27 per cent saying they will "definitely not" get their children in this age group vaccinated. Only 18 per cent plan to vaccinate their kids right away, while 38 per cent say that they would like to wait and see before they decide.

Crude oil prices fell on Thursday following an expectation that Saudi Arabia may sharply increase oil production on demand by the United States, as sanctions on Russia, which is a major oil producer, have led to a diminished supply of oil in the global markets.

Brent crude was down $2.07, or 1.8%, at $114.22 a barrel at 0649 GMT, having risen 0.6% the previous day. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped $2.21, or 1.9%, to $113.05 a barrel, after a 0.5% rise on Wednesday.

Analysts had expected Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries+ (OPEC+) &nbsp;producers to likely stick to their policy of only increasing output modestly, as they have done since May 2021.

But, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that some OPEC members were considering suspending Russia from the agreed production plan, to allow other producers to pump significantly more crude oil, as sought by the United States and European nations. The recent shuttle diplomacy between Saudi Arabia and Russia indicates the same.

"Russia has now transformed into a pariah," Seb analyst Bjarne Schieldrop commented, saying OPEC+ may break up or the agreed quota system will be placed on hold amid Moscow's international isolation.

"More oil from Saudi and the UAE will allow the West to implement sharper bans forcing Russian oil exports lower while not blowing up the oil price," Schieldrop added.

Stephen Brennock, an analyst at PVM Energy, said, "Such a move would effectively bring a premature end to the group's supply agreement and pave the way for an unrestricted increase in output,"&nbsp;

The 13 members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, chaired by Saudi Arabia, and their 10 partners, led by Russia, drastically slashed output in 2020 as demand slumped because of the coronavirus pandemic and worldwide lockdowns.

Recently, the soaring oil prices have stimulated the Gulf region's economies, with Saudi Arabia recording its highest growth rate in 10 years in the first quarter of 2022.

“Out of 36 districts in Maharashtra, only Mumbai and Pune are seeing a rise in the number of cases, but nothing to worry as such since the rate of hospitalisation is low,” he added.

Tope said, “The necessary arrangements are in place and there is no harm in keeping everything ready. The health department is monitoring the situation.”

The Maharashtra government had lifted all Covid restrictions, including the mask mandate, on 2 April, when the state celebrated ‘Gudi Padwa’.

Mumbai sees five-fold increase in covid cases

In order to get the first payout from the $6 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Shehbaz Sharif government in Pakistan has raised fuel and electricity prices, which is a key IMF demand for releasing funds.

The government has decided to hike the electricity prices by PKR&nbsp;7, and petrol and diesel by PKR&nbsp;30 per litre in order to stabilize the country’s economy amid a deepening political crisis.

This comes after IMF expressed concern over the PKR&nbsp;2,600 billion power tariff.

The Fund had suggested the government immediately privatize the public-owned profitable DISCOs, reported ARY News.

As reported by ANI, keeping in mind the debilitating state of loss-making DISCOs, the fund advised the handover of these DISCOS to the provinces. "The hike in power tariff will be applicable from July 01," said the sources privy to the matter.

The decision may cost the new coalition government popular support adding to the political uncertainty that has taken over the country since Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament early last month.

Last week Mr Khan held a huge political rally, drawing huge crowds and heavily criticizing the current coalition government and the military. At least 1,700 protesters were arrested by the police in Punjab.

Some officials now fear that the government’s move to appease the I.M.F. could hand Mr Khan a wave of public outrage that he could manipulate on the streets.

Mr Khan’s government had also applied for a bailout package from IMF but had failed to meet loan conditions.

Mr Sharif had been reluctant to end government electricity subsidies and oil subsidies fearing a public backlash that could affect his party’s chance of success in the next general elections.

Those elections are scheduled to be held next year, but the new government has come under mounting public pressure from Mr Khan’s supporters to hold them earlier.

This fuel and electricity price hike will badly affect the common man and raise the country’s inflation rate.
