Widespread flight chaos has been witnessed last week at airports across Europe, management struggled to cope with a post-pandemic rebound in demand, but British airports have been particularly hit by major disruption over the past week, which requires urgent intervention.

Schools were on a half-term break and the country also had a long public holiday weekend to mark Queen Elizabeth's 70 years on the throne.

Shapps, who said earlier this week airlines should stop selling tickets for flights they could not staff, said the industry had to sort out the problem.

"The industry itself needs to solve it," he told BBC TV. "The government doesn't run airports, it doesn't run the airlines. The industry needs to do that."

Airlines had hoped for a bumper summer for passengers after two years of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

But they have struggled to recruit staff after the turmoil of the pandemic, and complain it is taking longer to recruit new employees and vet them for security clearance.

Shapps said staff cuts during the pandemic had gone too deep.

"We'll work with the industry very hard ... to make sure we don't see a repeat of those scenes," he said.

A change in the law was making it easier to deal with the administration needed for security clearance, he said, adding he did not envisage a need for the army to be called in to help speed up the security checks.&nbsp;

Post-pandemic rebound in demand leads to aviation chaos in Europe

Mercedes-Benz, a luxury German automotive brand is recalling nearly one million older vehicles worldwide due to a potential problem with the braking system, the German federal transport authority, Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) said.

The KBA said in a statement dated June 1 and reported late Saturday in German media that the recall affected cars built between 2004 and 2015, the SUV series ML and GL and the R-Class luxury minivan.

"Corrosion on the brake booster can in the worst case lead to the connection between the brake pedal and the braking system being interrupted," the KBA added.

As a consequence, the service brake can stop functioning.

The KBA said that worldwide 993,407 vehicles were being recalled, including around 70,000 in Germany.

Mercedes-Benz confirmed the recall later, saying the move was based on an "analysis of isolated reports for certain vehicles".

In rare cases of very severe corrosion, it might be possible for a particularly strong or hard braking manoeuvre to cause mechanical damage to the brake booster, whereby the connection between the brake pedal and brake system would fail.

In such a very rare case, it would not be possible to decelerate the vehicle via the service brake. Thus, the risk of a crash or injury would be increased.

The company said it would "start with the recall immediately" and contact the owners of the "potentially affected vehicles".

The recall process will involve inspecting potentially affected vehicles and, depending on the results of the inspection, replacing the parts where necessary. Until the inspection takes place, the company advised their customers not to drive their vehicles.

A rare albino Galapagos giant tortoise born on May 1 &nbsp;made its public debut at the Tropiquarium zoo in Servion, &nbsp;Switzerland on Friday.

Two of the tortoises were born last month at the Tropiquarium in the western town of Servion as part of a programme to preserve the endangered species.

One is black like its parents and the other is albino. Their gender is yet to be determined.

Thomas Morel, a staff member at the Tropiquarium zoo says, “At Servion’s Tropiquarium, we have three Galapagos tortoises, one male and two females that have currently reached their sexual maturity, they are about 30 years old, a bit more, they are 33. The success rate of mating is around 2 to 3 per cent because these species are very big, and mating is complicated, this is why there is very little mating for this species, so we are very happy that our male is very active and succeeded. They live around 200 years.”

“Regarding albinism, what we found out is that for tortoises, it's about one in 100,000, so it’s something very special that we are lucky to see,” He added.

The mother, who weighs more than 100 kilograms (220 lb), laid five eggs on Feb. 11 and the albino baby hatched on May 1. The other baby hatched on May 5 after the eggs spent two-and-a-half months in an incubator.

The male weighs around 180 kg. Baby turtles weigh about 50 grams at birth and fit in the palm of the hand.

Morel says, “After several months of incubation, we had the chance to see the first hatching, it was the second hatching in the Servion’s Tropiquarium, we already had one last year, and this is the second. We were quite surprised by the tortoise’s colour. It can happen at birth, but after two days, we were sure it was an albino when it pointed the tip of its head, so it was really surprising, for this species, it’s quite extraordinary.”

Rare albino Galapagos giant tortoise debuts at Servion Tropiquarium

In a study by Emission Analytics, a leading independent global testing company it was revealed that almost 2,000 times more particle pollution is produced by tyre wear than is pumped out of the exhausts of modern cars.

To measure tire wear mass emissions, Emissions Analytics used high-precision scales to weigh all four wheels – tires and rims together, without detaching – over at least 1,000 miles on real roads. &nbsp;

This is coupled with a proprietary sampling system that collects particles at a fixed point immediately behind each tire, which is, via a sample line, drawn into a real-time detector measuring the size of distribution of particles by mass and number.&nbsp;

Typically, this measures particles from 10 microns down to 6 nanometres. &nbsp;This combination allows the real-time signal to be calibrated to the mass loss, and, by using the size distribution, the proportion of the particles likely to be suspended in the air can be estimated.&nbsp;

<img alt="Graph" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b1834985-2481-4b69-8ac6-b78d0a29a917" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/3_2.png" />

Nick Molden, a researcher at Emissions Analytics said, “Tyres are rapidly eclipsing the tailpipe as a major source of emissions from vehicles. Tailpipes are now so clean for pollutants that, if you were starting out afresh, you wouldn’t even bother regulating them.”

“We came to a bewildering amount of material being released into the environment – 300,000 tonnes of tyre rubber in the UK and US, just from cars and vans every year.” He added.

The smaller the particles get, the more volatile and harder to measure repeatably they become. &nbsp;Growing scientific evidence suggests that these ultrafine particles more easily enter the human bloodstream and lungs, and cross into the brain. &nbsp;

Study reveals car tyres produce more particle pollution than exhausts

The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi tweeted his response to the release of the United States State Department 2021 Report on International Religious Freedom,&nbsp;a day after United States’ secretary of state Anthony Blinken spoke of “rising attacks on people and places of worship” in India, on Friday, June 3.

Bagchi said, "We have noted the release of the U.S. State Department 2021 Report on International Religious Freedom, and the ill-informed comments by the senior U.S. officials.

It is unfortunate that vote bank politics is being practised in international relations. We would urge that assessments based on motivated inputs and biased views be avoided.

As a naturally pluralistic society, India values religious freedom and human rights. In our discussions with the US, we have regularly highlighted issues of concern there, including racially and ethnically motivated attacks, hate crimes and gun violence."

In May 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 50 per cent higher than during the pre-industrial era, reaching levels not seen on Earth for about four million years, the main US climate agency said on Friday.

Global warming caused by humans, particularly through the production of electricity using fossil fuels, transport, the production of cement, or even deforestation, is responsible for the new high, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

May is usually the month with the highest carbon dioxide levels each year.&nbsp;

In May 2022, the threshold of 420 parts per million (ppm) -- a unit of measurement used to quantify pollution in the atmosphere -- was crossed.&nbsp;

In May 2021, the rate was 419 ppm, and in 2020, 417 ppm.&nbsp;

The measurements are taken at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii, ideally located high on a volcano, which allows it to escape the possible influence of local pollution.&nbsp;

Before the Industrial Revolution, levels of carbon dioxide&nbsp;held steady at around 280 ppm, a level maintained for approximately 6,000 years of human civilization that preceded industrialization, according to NOAA.&nbsp;

The level now is comparable to what it was between 4.1 and 4.5 million years ago when carbon dioxide&nbsp;levels were near or above 400 ppm, the agency said in a statement.&nbsp;
