Israel’s recent strike on Iran’s Bandar Anzali naval base in the Caspian Sea disrupted a key Russia-Iran clandestine weapons supply route, according to reports. It was both an expansion of the conflict and a message from Israel. Here is what happened, according to reports

Israel recently attacked a crucial weapons supply line at sea between Russia and Iran, in the first such strike on Iranian naval assets in the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Sea is a crucial area for the transfer of weapons between Iran and Russia, according to reports citing Israeli defence sources. Israel attacked Iran’s Bandar Anzali port and the 4th Artesh Naval District Headquarters on March 18, said the reports. Scroll down for the video. Israel struck main base of Iran's northern naval base Bandar Anzali, located on Iran’s northern Caspian coast in Gilan Province, is the main base for Iran’s northern naval fleet and a critical node in the clandestine Tehran-Moscow weapons supply corridor, according to Israeli officials cited in the reports. The attack area hosted dozens of Iranian naval vessels, including the Moudge-class frigate IRIS Deylaman, missile ships, and patrol boats. It is home to naval facilities, shipyards, and the command centre of the 4th Artesh Naval District. It has affiliated defence sites such as Shahid Tamjidi Offshore Industries, linked to Iran’s marine logistics and weapons production. The area also includes port infrastructure, customs buildings, and shipping facilities. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that more than five of the vessels destroyed had anti-aircraft capabilities. Israel claimed the attack “degraded Iran’s capabilities while impairing control of the Caspian Sea”. https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-iran-war-report-iran-rejects-witkoff-kushner-talks-wants-jd-vance-to-lead-wion-1774430982478/embed Caspian Sea clandestine supply line and Iran-Russia military cooperation Unconfirmed open-source reporting suggested that nearly half of Iran’s Caspian fleet was affected in the Israeli attack, along with port infrastructure and the supply corridor. The strike temporarily disrupted both military and civilian logistics, including food and wheat imports, the reports claimed. Satellite imagery showed smoke plumes over Bandar Anzali port after the strike. The Caspian Sea has been a clandestine maritime corridor for Iran-Russia arms transfers since at least 2022, during the Russia-Ukraine war. A route that bypasses international scrutiny and sanctions According to reports, ships routinely switch off their tracking systems to evade detection while transporting Iran-made Shahed drones, ammunition, missiles, and other military equipment to Russia. The weapons move both ways. From Iran to Russia, they include Shahed drones, ammunition, and missile components used in the war in Ukraine. The Israeli strike of March 18 directly targeted the Iranian hub of the corridor, according to the IDF, degrading naval control of the covert supply line. No Russian territory was hit, but analysts view the strike as a signal that the Tehran-Moscow axis faces growing operational vulnerability. Iran Israel war: US seeking a month-long ceasefire? Israeli and American media claims say...

Iran war impact on ASEAN: Oil and gas price rises are roiling the economies of Southeast Asian nations, with the Philippines declaring a national energy emergency in a sign of how the global energy crisis caused by Iran war is rippling through ASEAN. Most ASEAN member states are net importers of oil and gas, and the ongoing Iran–Israel–US conflict, alongside the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has triggered sharp spikes in global oil prices, LNG costs, and regional energy markets. Several Southeast Asian governments have rolled out fuel conservation measures, including work-from-home policies, four-day workweeks, and limits on air conditioning and private vehicle use. Fuel subsidies, export curbs, diversification of fuels and suppliers like Russia, and increased use of domestically produced biofuels are also on the cards. Here is a roundup of how Southeast Asia is responding to the fuel crisis.

Philippines, worst-hit in ASEAN, declares national energy emergency amid oil price shock

A net importer of oil, the Philippines is among the worst hit in Southeast Asia’s energy crisis, with nearly 98 per cent of its crude oil imports sourced from the Gulf region. Significant volumes of LNG imports also come from the same corridor, leaving it highly exposed to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The government declared a national energy emergency on Tuesday (Mar 24), citing “imminent danger” to energy supply. Fuel reserves have dropped to roughly 45 days, while domestic gas prices have doubled since the crisis began. Authorities are boosting coal output, cracking down on hoarding, and considering measures such as flight groundings and four-day workweeks. Economists warn the Philippines faces heightened risks of inflation, energy shortages, and slowdown due to its heavy import dependence.

Also read: Iran begins charging up to $2 million per voyage transit fee in Strait of Hormuz: Report

Thailand ramps up energy-saving measures as reserves tighten

Thailand is one of the hardest-hit ASEAN economies as it depends on imports for nearly 60 per cent of its crude oil demand. More than half of these imports — along with over a quarter of LNG supply — come from the Gulf. With reserves covering only about two months, Thailand has suspended petroleum exports to protect domestic supply. Rising fuel costs are feeding into inflation and posing risks to GDP growth. The government has introduced visible energy-saving campaigns, including encouraging lighter office attire (T-shirts instead of suits), limiting air conditioning to near-ambient temperatures, reducing elevator usage, and promoting carpooling.

Singapore: Global refining hub under pressure from supply disruption

Singapore, a key global oil refining and trading hub, is 100 per cent dependent on energy imports. Around 70 per cent of its crude oil supply originates from the Gulf, alongside significant diesel and LNG imports. The disruption in global oil supply chains is affecting refining margins, trade flows, and financial activity. As a result, Singapore’s economy is feeling the secondary effects of higher energy prices, even as it maintains stable domestic supply through strategic reserves and diversified sourcing. Conservation measures are being implemented to manage demand.

https://www.wionews.com/videos/hormuz-risk-could-fast-track-ev-adoption-1774411188193/embed

Vietnam faces low reserves and industrial impact

Vietnam imports about 88 per cent of its crude oil from the Gulf and currently holds strategic reserves for less than 20 days — one of the lowest buffers in the region. It is also heavily reliant on LNG imports, with nearly half sourced from the Gulf. Amid Iran - Israel - US war, Southeast Asia faces a deepening energy crisis as oil prices surge. This moment is exposing ASEAN’s fuel import dependence, triggering shortages at pumps, inflation risks and urgent policy measures

Philippines, worst-hit in ASEAN, declares national energy emergency amid oil price shock A net importer of oil, the Philippines is among the worst hit in Southeast Asia’s energy crisis, with nearly 98 per cent of its crude oil imports sourced from the Gulf region. Also read: Iran begins charging up to $2 million per voyage transit fee in Strait of Hormuz: Report Thailand ramps up energy-saving measures as reserves tighten Thailand is one of the hardest-hit ASEAN economies as it depends on imports for nearly 60 per cent of its crude oil demand. Singapore: Global refining hub under pressure from supply disruption Singapore, a key global oil refining and trading hub, is 100 per cent dependent on energy imports. Conservation measures are being implemented to manage demand. https://www.wionews.com/videos/hormuz-risk-could-fast-track-ev-adoption-1774411188193/embed Vietnam faces low reserves and industrial impact Vietnam imports about 88 per cent of its crude oil from the Gulf and currently holds strategic reserves for less than 20 days — one of the lowest buffers in the region. It is also heavily reliant on LNG imports, with nearly half sourced from the Gulf. The government has activated its fuel price stabilisation fund and is seeking alternative crude supply from partners such as Japan and South Korea. Manufacturing, electricity generation, and industrial output have been hit. Did Donald Trump just blame Pete Hegseth for Iran war? With defence secretary seated nearby, US president says...

Iran war, Strait of Hormuz, and NATO troop withdrawals: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said he was “absolutely convinced” that an international effort would soon secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the Iran-US-Israel war. He expressed the need to protect global trade and freedom of navigation in the strait, through which 20 per cent of global oil trade flows. Just a couple of days before his interviews with US broadcasters, a quieter development unfolded: NATO troops were filmed leaving positions in Iraq, reportedly for “safer locations”.

NATO completes relocation of personnel from Iraq

The troops of the alliance, of which the US is a key member, moved to safer positions in Europe, including Joint Force Command Naples. It was described as a temporary “posture adjustment” in response to escalating regional threats linked to Iran. This is essentially due to the growing risk of Iranian drone and missile attacks on Western facilities in the region.

NATO’s dual narrative: Talking about strength but acting with caution

Rutte spoke about a newly formed 22-country coalition, comprising several NATO members alongside Japan, South Korea, Australia, and Gulf states such as UAE and Bahrain. Their objective was to coordinate naval escorts, patrols, and minesweeping operations to stabilise shipping lanes in the Hormuz corridor. At the time of writing, however, not a single military deployment has taken place from this coalition to secure the strait.

Also read: Russia urges political, diplomatic solution as Trump’s 48-hour Hormuz deadline nears

Despite Trump’s initial appeal, NATO has not acted on Article 5

In his remarks, Rutte was accommodative of US President Donald Trump’s appeal to nations to help secure the strait. However, in reality, there has been no invocation of Article 5, the so-called “one for all, all for one” clause of NATO. There is no unified alliance deployment in the region either.

Against this backdrop, NATO’s withdrawal from Iraq reflects a different reality. The alliance is sensitive to direct risk exposure of its troops in volatile theatres. Iran war: NATO talked about securing the Strait of Hormuz with a coalition of nations, while quietly withdrawing its troops from Iraq. A calculated strategy of risk management? NATO's differing signalling is part of coalition diplomacy and strategic ambiguity amid an ever-changing war

NATO completes relocation of personnel from Iraq The troops of the alliance, of which the US is a key member, moved to safer positions in Europe, including Joint Force Command Naples. It was described as a temporary “posture adjustment” in response to escalating regional threats linked to Iran. This is essentially due to the growing risk of Iranian drone and missile attacks on Western facilities in the region. NATO’s dual narrative: Talking about strength but acting with caution Rutte spoke about a newly formed 22-country coalition, comprising several NATO members alongside Japan, South Korea, Australia, and Gulf states such as UAE and Bahrain. Their objective was to coordinate naval escorts, patrols, and minesweeping operations to stabilise shipping lanes in the Hormuz corridor. At the time of writing, however, not a single military deployment has taken place from this coalition to secure the strait. Also read: Russia urges political, diplomatic solution as Trump’s 48-hour Hormuz deadline nears Despite Trump’s initial appeal, NATO has not acted on Article 5 In his remarks, Rutte was accommodative of US President Donald Trump’s appeal to nations to help secure the strait. NATO’s physical footprint has been reduced in the region, and the advisory and training mission continues remotely. https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-war-tehran-blames-us-for-closure-of-strait-of-hormuz-1774251885773/embed Risk management is central to NATO approach The dual approach is partly because Iraq presented an immediate and direct threat environment for stationed NATO personnel.
