In Iran, at least 15 people were killed and over 40 were wounded in a terrorist attack on a major Shiite holy site in the southern city of Shiraz on Wednesday (October 26), the state-run media reported.

Several women and children were among those who lost their lives, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said. So far, there's no official confirmation.

The state media further mentioned that "three terrorists attacked the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz". The agency quoted witnesses as saying that the attackers were in a car and shot at pilgrims and staff at the entrance to the shrine.

Two assailants were arrested and the police were looking for the third.

A media outlet associated with Iran's judiciary said the armed men had entered the shrine at 5:45pm (local time). A local media outlet also reported that the attackers were not Iranian nationals.

So far, no one has taken responsibility but IRNA said the attackers acted as "Takfiri terrorists" — a reference to the hardline, armed Sunni Islamist groups.

The attack happens on the same day when Iranian security forces opened fire at mourners who gathered at Mahsa Amini's Kurdish hometown of Saqez.

Violent protests sparked in Iran and abroad after 22-year-old Amini's death in the custody of morality police. Reports have suggested that she was detained for wearing her headscarf in an "improper" way.

After Britain's new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took charge on Tuesday (October 24), several Tory MPs handed in their resignations amid the cabinet reshuffle. Amid a massive economic crisis in the country, Sunak kept the finance minister Jeremy Hunt in the crucial post. His predecessor Liz Truss appointed Hunt just 11 days ago. The first British-Indian prime minister has made his close ally Dominic Raab deputy PM and justice secretary. Meanwhile, Suella Braverman is back as interior minister in Sunak's new UK cabinet. Recently, the hardline right-winger Braverman was forced out of Truss's cabinet. Grant Shapps, who had briefly replaced Braverman at the Home Office, was named business secretary with partial oversight of climate policy, instead of Johnson loyalist Jacob Rees-Mogg. Meanwhile, Ben Wallace has been retained as the defence secretary. Sunak has also retained James Cleverly as foreign secretary. Over the last few days, Russia has repeatedly claimed that Ukraine is planning to detonate a 'dirty bomb'. In recent telephonic conversations between Moscow and the West, the country's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed Ukraine situation and made the allegations. Shoigu talked about the ongoing war that caused massive food and fuel crises globally. Russia's defence ministry said in a statement that Shoigu discussed Ukraine with UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace following earlier calls with his French and Turkish counterparts. "Shoigu conveyed to his British colleague his concern about possible provocations by Ukraine with the use of a 'dirty bomb'," the ministry said in a statement. While responding to the claims, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised Shoigu's accusations. Zelensky said on social media: "If Russia calls and says that Ukraine is allegedly preparing something, it means one thing: Russia has already prepared all this. I believe that now the world should react as harshly as possible." What is a "dirty bomb"? The so-called "dirty bomb" is a conventional explosive device that is laced with toxic nuclear material. Instead of producing an atomic explosion that would level a whole city, dirty bombs are made to disperse poisonous waste. Security experts have been more concerned about them as a type of terrorist weapon that may be deployed in cities to terrorise civilians than as a tactical tool for use by opposing sides in combat. Since the majority of people in an impacted area would be able to flee before receiving lethal quantities of radiation, experts believe the immediate health impact would likely be minimal. But the need to flee metropolitan areas or even abandon entire cities could cause significant economic harm. WATCH | Russia pushes dirty bomb claims, submits formal letter to UN × An evacuation of several city blocks would likely be necessary for the event that a bomb made of radioactive cesium from a lost or stolen medical device was detonated, making the area dangerous for decades. In a background article on dirty bombs, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an independent agency, said: "A dirty bomb is not a weapon of mass destruction but a 'weapon of mass disruption', where contamination and anxiety are the major objectives." In the United States, early voting began on Monday (October 24) with people voting in the midterm elections. In his recent meeting with six young "change-makers", President Joe Biden stressed the need for voter turnout.

In the meeting, they talked about several issues dominating the election such as abortion access, trans rights, criminal justice reform, gun safety, economic instability and climate injustice.

Targeting the opposition on abortion, Biden said the Senators on the Republican side have made it clear what they want to do. He noted that Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina "wants to federally pass a law that they'd expect the President to sign that would in fact outlaw the right to choose in most cases, no matter whether it's incest or rape or any criminal act".

But Biden also mentioned, that if Republicans succeed in blocking abortion in every state, then he is going to veto it. "It's not going to happen as long as I'm President," he said.

The US president told activists Monday at his party headquarters in Washington: "We just have 15 days until one of the most important elections in our lifetime. And it's going to shape the way the country looks... for the coming decade." He predicted a late surge.
