The United States is backing Ukraine, a nation pushing hard to become a NATO member, against Russia in the ongoing war that caused massive food and fuel crises globally. The US is providing Ukraine with advanced military weapons and aid to fight Russia, but its attention is also diverted to the simmering tensions in the Taiwan strait and Korean Peninsula. The US military said in a strategy document released on Thursday (October 27) that China is apparently the "most consequential" challenge for Washington, but Russia presents "acute threats". ALSO READ | Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow warns it may target Western satellites helping Ukraine in battle The unclassified version of the US National Defense Strategy 2022 said: "China presents the most consequential and systemic challenge, while Russia poses acute threats -- both to vital US national interests abroad and to the homeland." "The most comprehensive and serious challenge to US national security is (China's) coercive and increasingly aggressive endeavor to refashion the Indo-Pacific region and the international system to suit its interests and authoritarian preferences," the strategy document said. China-Taiwan tensions The document says that Chinese actions may act as a destabilising factor and threaten peace in the Indo-Pacific region. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and tensions recently flared up between Beijing and Washington. China claimed that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories. The document further emphasised the need for collaboration with allied countries and other partners to counter the dangers posed by China and Russia. The US claims that such cooperation is "foundational for US national security interests." It said, "The most comprehensive and serious challenge to US national security is (China's) coercive and increasingly aggressive endeavor to refashion the Indo-Pacific region and the international system to suit its interests and authoritarian preferences." The Pentagon also said that it will advance its Major Defense Partnership with India to "enhance its (India's) ability to deter People's Republic of China (PRC) aggression and ensure free and open access to the Indian Ocean Region." The Department (of Defense) will support robust deterrence of Russian aggression against vital US national interests, including our treaty Allies." Amid the ongoing Ukraine war, fears of nuclear weapon use are rising. The strategy document noted that the US intends for its nuclear arsenal to deter "all forms of strategic attack," including those involving conventional weapons. UK foreign secretary to arrive in India on Friday: 'India is a natural partner for the UK in the Indo-Pacific'

Tuberculosis has rebounded after years of decline, killing an estimated 1.6 million people in 2021, up 14 percent in two years, new World Health Organization figures showed Thursday.

TB, which was overtaken by Covid-19 during the worst of the pandemic as the world's biggest infectious killer, claimed an estimated 1.5 million lives in 2020 and 1.4 million in 2019.

And the WHO blamed the resurgence of the disease on the pandemic, saying the crisis had had a huge and ongoing impact on access to diagnosis and treatment.

"Globally, the annual estimated number of deaths from TB fell between 2005 and 2019, but the estimates for 2020 and 2021 suggest that this trend has been reversed," the UN's health agency said in its annual Global TB report.

Most of the estimated increase in TB deaths globally was accounted for by four countries: India, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines.

The report said it was possible that TB would "once again be the leading cause of death worldwide from a single infectious agent, replacing Covid-19".

But Mel Spigelman, president of the non-profit TB Alliance, told AFP last week that that had already happened, comparing the annual TB death rate to the latest Covid-19 figures.

An estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with TB in 2021 -- a 4.5 percent increase on 2020, the WHO said.

"This is the first time in many years an increase has been reported in the number of people falling ill with TB and drug resistant TB," the WHO said.

And the incidence rate -- new cases per 100,000 population per year -- increased by 3.6 percent between 2020 and 2021, after declining by around two percent a year for most of the last two decades.

Progress dented

"The overarching finding of this report is that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to have a damaging impact on access to TB diagnosis and treatment and the burden of TB disease," the WHO update said.

"Progress made in the years up to 2019 has slowed, stalled or reversed, and global TB targets are off track.

"Intensified efforts backed by increased funding are urgently required to mitigate and reverse the negative impacts of the pandemic on TB."

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria that most often affects the lungs. Like Covid, it is transmitted via the air by infected people, for example by coughing. It is preventable and curable.

The WHO said conflicts around the world, the global energy crisis and associated risks to food security were likely to worsen the situation further.

"The top priority is to restore access to and provision of essential TB services, so that levels of TB case detection and treatment can recover to at least 2019 levels," the report said.

Eight countries accounted for more than two thirds of the global total of cases: India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that with solidarity, determination, innovation and the equitable use of tools, we can overcome severe health threats," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"Let's apply those lessons to tuberculosis. It is time to put a stop to this long-time killer. Working together, we can end TB."

Tuberculosis firmly on the rise after years of decline: WHO

Turkey secretly assisted Pakistan in creating a cyber-army to "shape public opinion" that was disguised under the bilateral agreement and utilised to attack India and the United States, says a Nordic Monitor report. It apparently also pursued internal political objectives to disprove criticism directed at Pakistan's leaders.

The report published on October 24 (Monday) noted that the proposal to create such a unit was initially brought up in private discussions between the then-interior minister of state Shehryar Khan Afridi and the visiting Turkish interior minister Suleyman Soylu on December 17, 2018.

The interior ministry in Islamabad held a senior-level discussion about the issue while keeping it a secret from the majority of the staff, the report stated, adding that the same day, during a meeting with Soylu, Imran Khan, the then-prime minister and interior minister, gave the proposal his approval as well.

This is not the first time a such report has surfaced, the first public admission of this clandestine operation was made by Soylu during an interview on October 13, 2022, with a local TV station in Kahramanmaras.

Although, he did not name the country, but made clear he was talking about Pakistan when he referred to a country that was a five or six-hour direct flight from Turkey.

Did Turkey assist Pakistan in setting up a 'secret cyber army' to attack India and US?

British energy giant Shell on Thursday announced net profit totalling $6.7 billion in the third quarter, as oil and gas prices remain strong despite recent slides on easing supply fears.

The result compared with a loss after tax of $447 million in the July-September period last year, Shell said.

Flush with cash from revenue surging to almost $100 billion, Shell said it would buy back shares at a cost of $4 billion.

"We are delivering robust results at a time of ongoing volatility in global energy markets," said Shell's outgoing chief executive Ben van Beurden.

The latest profit, however, was far lower than its second-quarter net income of $18 billion.

Shell alerted the market on the comparison earlier this month, blaming the drop on a slump in refining margins.

Although oil and gas prices have surged from a year ago following the invasion of Ukraine by major energy producer Russia, hydrocarbon values have seen some recent cooling as the northern hemisphere experiences mild temperatures and countries shore up supplies.

Shares rally

Shell's share price jumped 3.5 percent following the results, which also included a raised dividend following underlying profits ahead of analyst expectations.

The group's latest earnings reignited calls for the UK government to slap a much bigger windfall tax on energy companies as millions of Britons struggle with a cost-of-living crisis.

"A proper tax on Shell's reported Q3... profits as well as the billions made in Q1 and Q2 by all the fossil fuel giants would already have generated enough cash to insulate thousands of homes," Greenpeace UK's senior climate advisor Charlie Kronick said.

"Responding to the cost-of-living crisis is well within the government's control."

Britain's new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, unveiled a windfall tax on the profits of British energy companies earlier this year in his role as finance minister, but it was deemed as far too small by campaigners.

Van Beurden recently indicated that governments should "probably" tax energy firms more to help protect the poorest from rocketing energy bills amid decades-high inflation, although critics said the comments did not carry much weight ahead of his departure.

Shell last month announced that van Beurden would step down as CEO at the end of the year, as the energy major looks to reinvent itself under group renewables boss Wael Sawan.

Towards the end of his nine years at the helm, van Beurden slashed thousands of jobs after Shell slumped into a huge loss on Covid lockdowns.

A Shell veteran with almost 40 years at the group, he departs having carried out a major corporate overhaul that saw the company ditch "Royal Dutch" from the start of its name.

The Tesla CEO said that he wants the platform to be "warm and welcoming to all", adding that "much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes."

'That is why I bought Twitter': Elon Musk's latest message for advertisers

The eight-month-old Russia-Ukraine war raised concerns that a nuclear weapon could be deployed that would lead to massive destruction. In the past couple of months, the issue has been raised by world leaders, who are urging Moscow and Kyiv to end the conflict peacefully.

In a recent report, US-based media outlet POLITICO cited United States diplomatic cable and two people familiar with the issue who said that the nation is apparently speeding up its plan to store a more accurate version of its mainstay nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Europe.

The cable revealed that the US officials informed NATO allies this month that the arrival of the upgraded B61-12 air-dropped gravity bomb, which was originally scheduled for next spring, is now planned for this December, the report added.

As quoted by POLITICO, Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said via an email, "While we aren't going to discuss details of our nuclear arsenal, modernisation of US B61 nuclear weapons has been underway for years and plans to safely and responsibly swap out older weapons for the upgraded B61-12 versions is part of a long-planned and scheduled modernisation effort. It is in no way linked to current events in Ukraine and was not sped up in any way."

Rising fears of nuclear weapons' use

On Wednesday, Russia's strategic forces carried out drills, including a test launch of a ballistic missile from a submarine. Not just in the Ukraine war, similar tensions have been simmering in the Korean Peninsula as well, with North Korea continuing with its record pace of weapon testing this year, including the firing of a short-range ballistic missile.

The United States, Japan and South Korea warned Wednesday that a North Korean nuclear test would warrant an "unprecedentedly strong response". They also promised unity after a blitz of missile launches by North Korea.

Is United States accelerating plans to upgrade its nukes at NATO bases in Europe?

Since motorbikes are one of the cheapest forms of transportation in Singapore, it has earned a reputation as one of the most costly cities in the world, Bloomberg reported.

According to figures from the Land Transport Authority, the cost of a 10-year motorcycle permit in the city-state reached a record S$12,801 ($8,984) this month, up over 200 per cent in four years and more than the price of a new, entry-level bike in the Southeast Asian country.

Singapore regulates the number of certificates of entitlement, also known as permits, in order to reduce the number of motorbikes and cars on the road.

The city's motorbike fleet is limited to roughly 142,000 as of September. There can only be roughly 650,000 automobiles in total.

Drivers would require over S$20,000 at the present permit price in order to purchase and operate a $5,000 entry-level motorcycle.

As quoted by Bloomberg, Nathan Peng, a political science lecturer at the Singapore Management University, said it would eventually trickle down to delivery riders who zigzag the island on cheap motorcycles.

Currently, it costs more than S$11,000 to renew an existing permission. This is less than the cost of a new permit but about six times what it did a decade ago.

Renters' costs are anticipated to increase, while individuals who own their bikes will pay the higher rates directly. A lot of delivery drivers rent their cars, either from a private owner or from a meal delivery service like Grab.

New research claims that cutting meat consumption will help in tackling the climate crisis. If the world wants to avoid the worst effects of the climate problem, consumption should be decreased to the equivalent of around two hamburgers a week in the developed world.

As per the study, the consumption and production of meat contribute significantly to climate change, accounting for around a third of the UK's diet-related carbon emissions.

In order to reduce the environmental impact of food production, a report commissioned by the government last year found that people must eat 30 per cent less meat by the end of the decade.

In regions where meat consumption is high, daily meat consumption must drop to 79 kcal per person by 2030 (equivalent to two beef burgers per week) and 60 kcal by 2050 (1.5 beef burgers per week).

Apart from meat consumption, additional measures include accelerating the phase-out of coal as an energy source and a six-fold faster expansion of public transportation.

The new 200-page report, states that we need a five-fold increase in the rate at which we transition to healthier, more sustainable diets.

As quoted by Daily Mail, Ani Dasgupta, president and CEO of World Resources Institute, said: "This year, the world has seen the devastation wrought by just 1.1 degrees Celsius of warming."

"Every fraction of a degree matters in the fight to protect people and the planet. We are seeing important advances in the fight against climate change, but we are still not winning in any sector," Dasgupta added.

"The State of Climate Action 2022 is an urgent wakeup call for decision-makers to commit to real transformation across every aspect of our economy," Dasgupta said.

There is good news for those who are afraid of needles. China had been working on coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines that can be inhaled through the mouth. The news agency The Associated Press reported that in what appears to be a world's first, the Chinese city of Shanghai started administering an inhalable Covid vaccine on Wednesday (October 26). As per an announcement on an official city social media account, the oral vaccine is being offered for free as a booster dose. It is available for those who are previously vaccinated. The report by AP mentioned a video that showed how a community health centre was putting a short nozzle of a translucent white cup into the mouths of people. The video was posted by an online Chinese state media outlet. The text with the video explained that after slowly inhaling the content, people hold their breath for five seconds and let the entire process complete in 20 seconds. When I breathed it in, it tasted a bit sweet." × In China, the inhalable vaccine was developed by the biopharmaceutical company CanSino Biologics Inc. It is an aerosol version of the company’s one-shot adenovirus vaccine. Notably, the effectiveness of this oral vaccine has not been fully explored. Not just China, India has also approved a nasal vaccine, but it has not been rolled out yet. The vaccine is given through the nose. It is developed in the United States and has been licensed to Indian vaccine maker Bharat Biotech. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around a dozen nasal vaccines are being tested worldwide. China's zero-Covid policy, which includes strict measures and quarantine policies, has had several negative impacts on the economy. China rolls out inhalable coronavirus vaccine, offers it for free as booster dose: Report

In a BBC broadcast, a word cloud on new UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak included foul and swear words to describe the Indian-origin premier. The clip of the same went viral online.

On Tuesday, Sunak was appointed as the prime minister by the British monarch King Charles III as he scripted history by becoming the first British-Asian to hold the post. A practising Hindu, the 42-year-old Sunak is the nation's youngest leader since 1812.

But there are certainly mixed opinions on Sunak becoming the UK prime minister—some racist remarks have also been made. A video of a British radio show is going viral in which a caller is explaining why a non-white person becoming the PM of the UK is not good.

The caller said: "Can you imagine me becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan? People of England would like to see someone who looks like them."

Now, this gaffe by UK's national broadcaster is quite concerning. In the word cloud, BBC missed some swear words when they appeared on TV screens during its coverage of Downing Street developments.

Britons were asked about their opinion on Sunak becoming prime minister. It appeared when BBC presenter Joanna Gosling asked: "How would you describe Rishi Sunak in one word?"

The word cloud, which was created by polling research company Savanta ComRes, contained the words "rich", "capable", "okay", "good", "clever", etc. But some swear words were also displayed.

Mr Sunak was referred to as a "c**t" and "t**t", but the graphic censored part of the word.

Apart from some positive words like "smart", "intelligent", "safe" and "strong", the word cloud also had words like "boring", "slimy", "idiot", "backstabbing" and "liar".
