Brazilian authorities said that at least three people were killed and several were injured in a shooting incident on Friday (November 25) when a gunman opened fire on two schools in the southeastern part of the nation.

As quoted by news agencies Luis Carlos Coutinho, the mayor of the town of Aracruz, in Espirito Santo state, told the radio network CBN that a group of "criminals attacked the first school".

A man opened fire on several teachers, killing two women. The group then went to another school, where the same man again opened fire and killed an adolescent girl. More than 10 were injured in both schools.

As per the report, the incident happened around 10am (local time) in Aracruz, a small town which is located around 80 kilometres north of the state capital Vitoria.

Initially, the local police thought that the gunman was a student but Marcio Celante, Espirito Santo's head of public security told reporters that the shooter had not been confirmed.

President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the shooting and called it an "absurd tragedy". He said, "I extend my support to Governor Casagrande in investigating the case and comforting the communities surrounding the two affected schools."

After the deadly shooting, Geraldo Alckmin, the vice president-elect of the nation, expressed grief. He wrote on Twitter: "I send my solidarity to the school communities, the families and the victims' friends. Brazil: At least three killed and several injured in school shooting

A group of United Nations experts said on Friday (November 25) that the way the Taliban are treating Afghan women and girls could amount to a crime against humanity. The assessment by the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett and nine other experts says the treatment of women and girls may amount to "gender persecution".

They say that the Taliban's targeting of women and girls deepens "flagrant violations of their human rights and freedoms that are already the most draconian globally and may amount to gender persecution -- a crime against humanity".

Last year in August, the Taliban regained control of Kabul from the Western-backed government, with a vow of rebranding themselves, also attempting to improve foreign relations and boost trade and the economy.

However, it appears that the Taliban 2.0 is quite similar to their previous version. And per the analysts, the new version of the Taliban is not willing to make significant changes to its extremist ideology.

Their latest decisions, especially relating to women and their freedom, indicate that the Taliban are far away from changing their harsh social policies.

After taking control, they said that they respect women's rights as per their interpretation of Islamic law, and ever since, a majority of women who work for the government have lost their jobs. There are also restrictions regarding women's mobility, education, schooling for young girls, attire, etc.

The UN experts said in a statement: "In recent months, violations of women and girls' fundamental rights and freedoms in Afghanistan, already the most severe and unacceptable in the world, have sharply increased."

"Confining women to their homes is tantamount to imprisonment and is likely leading to increased levels of domestic violence and mental health challenges," the statement added.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Host nation Qatar knocked out after second straight defeat

England suffered a sobering reality check as they were outplayed for long periods by a youthful United States side in a tense 0-0 draw in their second World Cup Group B game on Friday. A 6-2 thrashing of Iran on Monday sent fans' hopes soaring but Gareth Southgate's side were fortunate not to suffer a repeat of their 1950 World Cup calamity against the Americans.

They will still qualify for the last 16 if they avoid a heavy defeat by Wales in their final group game, but the team was greeted with ‘boos’ at the final whistle and will need a vast improvement if it wants to have a deep run.

The U.S. produced a high-tempo display but may live to rue not putting away an England side stuck in second gear, although they will reach the last 16 for the fifth time since 1994 if they beat Iran.

"A draw's not the worst thing, but I felt for stretches of the game we showed dominance," Chelsea's Christian Pulisic, one of five England-based players in the U.S starting line-up, said.

He struck the crossbar in a first half his team dominated while the outstanding Weston McKennie tormented England and spurned a glorious first-half chance.

England captain Harry Kane sent a late header wide that would have given England a first World Cup win over the U.S. at the third attempt but it would have been a travesty.

While the result, and performance, was desperately disappointing, England top the group on four points and remain in the box seat to reach the last 16.

Iran, who snatched a late win over Wales, have three points with the U.S. on two points and Wales on one. All possibilities are still open in the group next Tuesday.

"Wasn't the best performance for sure," Kane, who remains two behind Wayne Rooney's England record 53 goals, said.

"Good spells with the ball, but we didn't quite have the final product. A draw isn't bad for us. We were playing a tough team and we move on."

For the first time in 54 games, England manager Southgate named an unchanged starting line-up but they were unrecognisable to the free-flowing side that had demolished Iran.

NO IMPACT

They lacked zip and the sight of teenage midfielder Jude Bellingham, who earned rave reviews against Iran, making no impact and being replaced by veteran Jordan Henderson in the second half just about summed it up.

A day after Thanksgiving, there was a carnival atmosphere in tent-like Al Bayt Stadium before kickoff.

The Americans took a while to settle and were fortunate when Kane's shot from Bukayo Saka's cross was blocked by Walker Zimmerman and flew just wide.

After that a nimble and smart U.S. side took charge.

Haji Wright, the only change to Gregg Berhalter's line-up from the opening draw with Wales, headed wide and England had a huge let-off when McKennie half-volleyed over.

Juventus's McKennie, sporting a red, white and blue hairdo, then instigated another move with a surging run before the ball was worked across to Pulisic who crashed an angled left-foot drive against the bar in the 33rd minute.

The chances kept flowing for a slick American side before halftime with Sergino Dest threatening after a weaving run and Pulisic scuffing a header wide.

England finally awoke from their slumber just before the break with Bukayo Saka scooping a shot over before U.S. keeper Matt Turner was forced into his first save of the match, pushing Mount's drilled low shot around the post.

Southgate resisted the temptation to make changes at halftime but the pattern quickly resumed with Pulisic having a shot deflected wide and from the corner England defender Harry Maguire made a crucial intervention with Tim Ream lurking.

He finally turned to his bench for inspiration and brought on Henderson and the mercurial Jack Grealish but to little effect as the game fizzled out into England's 12th goalless draw at the World Cup, the most of any nation in the history of the tournament.

President Vladimir Putin on Friday (November 25) spoke to a group of mothers of Russian soldiers, who were sent to fight in Ukraine, and died. He also offered condolences to one of the women, stating that her son did not die "in vain". Putin told the mothers that Moscow will achieve its goals. But the estimate by the West is far less than what Russia claimed. As per Moscow's last publicly disclosed report on September 21, a total of 5,937 soldiers had been killed. Ahead of Mother's Day, which will be celebrated in Russia on Sunday, Putin told the mothers: "I want you to know — I personally and the entire leadership of the country share this pain. The critics have even accused the Russian authorities that they are hiding the real number of dead Russian troops. Putin offers condolences to mothers of soldiers killed in Ukraine, says Russia 'will achieve' its goals

A telephonic conversation between Pope Francis and a senior cardinal, who is currently on trial for fraud, has been apparently taped secretly. It emerged that during the conversation, Pope was asked to confirm whether or not he had authorised payments to help free a kidnapped nun in Africa.

Just days before the trial of Cardinal Angelo Becciu began, the recording, which was actually done in July 2021, emerged at a hearing on Thursday (November 24).

A transcript of the same was later published by the Italian news agency Adnkronos. And the journalists were not given permission to listen to the recording.

The court was told that the recording was made without the Pope's knowledge by someone in a room with Becciu. The conversation was secretly taped just days before the trial began.

All of this started when Becciu hired co-defendant Cecilia Marogna in 2018. He was the third most powerful person in the Vatican. And Marogna was a security analyst.

Becciu was removed from office and stripped of his cardinal privileges in September 2020 because of the scandal involving the Vatican's loss-making purchase of a posh London house and also the misappropriation of church funds.

Becciu strongly denies any wrongdoing, but together with nine other defendants, he went on trial in July last year. He faces charges ranging from fraud to money laundering and extortion.

Among the defendants is a woman named Cecilia Marogna. She is accused of misspending $667,000 she received from the Vatican. The money was given allegedly to freeing captive priests and nuns abroad. Marogna has been hired as a security consultant by Becciu.

The transcript published by Italian media read: "Did you or not give me the authorisation to start the operations to free the nun?"

It added, "For the ransom, we had fixed 500,000, we said no more because it seemed immoral to give more money... that would go into the pockets of the terrorists... I think I had informed you about all this... do you remember?"

The transcript published by Italian media read: "Did you or not give me the authorisation to start the operations to free the nun?" It added, "For the ransom, we had fixed 500,000, we said no more because it seemed immoral to give more money... that would go into the pockets of the terrorists... European Space Agency (ESA) is intending to help millions of people by building space-based solar farms that will harvest energy from the Sun and transmit it down to receiving stations on Earth with the so-called SOLARIS plan.

European Space Agency (ESA) is intending to help millions of people by building space-based solar farms that will harvest energy from the Sun and transmit it down to receiving stations on Earth with the so-called SOLARIS plan. In an attempt to understand it, ESA is likely to approve a three-year study this week to examine if the plan of building massive solar farms is feasible or not. They will check whether or not it would work, along with being cost-effective. A BBC report said the idea will be considered at a Paris meeting on Tuesday by the research ministers. The main objective is to place enormous satellites in orbit, with the capability of producing the same amount of electricity as a power plant. With the SOLARIS initiative, ESA is planning to probe what are the key technologies needed to make this ambitious Space-Based Solar Power a working reality. The report added that the SOLARIS programme would be the first to provide the foundation for a workable strategy to construct a space-based renewable energy generation system. ESA's director general Josef Aschbacher told BBC News that he believed that solar power from space could be of ''enormous'' help, aimed at tackling the energy shortages in future. He said: ''We do need to convert into carbon neutral economies and therefore change the way we produce energy and especially reduce the fossil fuel part of our energy production." ''If you can do it from space, and I'm saying if we could, because we are not there yet, this would be absolutely fantastic because it would solve a lot of problems," he added.
