Chris Murphy, Connecticut's Democratic US Senator, on Sunday expressed doubt over a proposed ban on assault weapons. Murphy's comments suggested that he is unsure that it could pass the upper chamber.

Murphy has been one of the leading gun control advocates in the Senate. His remarks came amid the ban being pushed by President Biden in the wake of the latest mass shootings in the country.

After shooting tragedies in Virginia and Colorado in the last two weeks, questions were raised about the funding of law enforcement agencies in places that refuse to enforce red flag laws.

Murphy said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday: "If you passed an assault weapons ban you would see less mass shootings in this country. You are not going to magically eliminate mass-shootings, but an AR-15, or AR-15 style weapon, is generally the choice of mass shooters."

After shooting tragedies in US, Democrats renew calls for assault weapons ban

Canada's long-awaited Indo-Pacific strategy was launched on Sunday, which describes China as an "increasingly disruptive global power" on the world stage.

The strategy mentions that despite the multiple threats posed by China, there's a need for cooperation on urgent issues such as climate change, global health, biodiversity and nuclear non-proliferation.

With this crucial foreign policy, Justin Trudeau's government would look forward to boosting military spending and further expanding trade ties in the Indo-Pacific region.

The strategy noted: "China is an increasingly disruptive global power. China is looking to shape the international order into a more permissive environment for interests and values that increasingly depart from ours."

The strategy outlined Canada's almost half a billion dollars ($1.7 billion) in spending which includes ramping up the nation's military presence and cyber security in the region.

The policy also mentions strict foreign investment rules to protect intellectual property, in order to prevent Chinese state-owned enterprises from snapping up critical mineral supplies.

Canada launches new Indo-Pacific strategy with focus on 'increasingly disruptive' China

Croatia absorbed an early blow before revving into gear at the World Cup with two goals from Andrej Kramaric securing a 4-1 victory over Canada on Sunday that moved them a point away from the last 16 and dashed their opponents' knockout-stage hopes.

The 2018 runners-up had fallen behind after 68 seconds at the Khalifa International Stadium when Alphonso Davies thumped a header into the net, but a potentially grim evening turned in their favour with two goals late in the first half.

After their dour opening draw with Morocco had instigated a post-mortem into whether this Croatia side lacked a killer instinct, Kramaric and Marko Livaja found the net before the break to take the wind out of Canada's sails.

Kramaric then doubled his tally after the break and Lovro Majer netted in stoppage time to wrap up a victory that moved Croatia to the top of Group F on four points. They now need only a draw in their final game against third-placed Belgium, who are a point behind, to guarantee a knockout spot.

After two defeats, Canada's exit at the group stage was confirmed, leaving them to face Morocco, also on four points, in their final game.

Canada had flown out of the blocks with the fastest goal of the tournament so far and their first in the World Cup, after drawing a blank in their only previous appearance in 1986.

A long clearance from the keeper eventually found its way to Tajon Buchanan, who shaped a superb cross from the right into the box where Davies was arriving like an express train to rise high above his marker and head powerfully down into the net.

Yet it was a half of two halves, as Croatia -- thoroughly outplayed in the early stages -- eventually shifted into gear.

They were level in the 36th minute when Ivan Perisic, a growing influence on the left, slid the ball through to Kramaric who fired first time into the far corner.

They took the lead eight minutes later when a lovely build-up from the back ended with Livaja firing right-footed low into the net from the edge of the area after being fed by Mateo Kovacic.

Canada's hopes of getting back into the contest were dashed when a curling cross from Perisic on the left was controlled by Kramaric, who shifted the ball on to his left foot and dispatched it low into the bottom corner in the 70th minute.

Deep into stoppage time, Croatia added a final blow when Mislav Orsic broke clear and unselfishly squared for Livaja to tap home.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov fulfilled a childhood dream on Sunday as they sealed tennis history for Canada with a first Davis Cup title by beating Australia 2-0 in Malaga.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov fulfilled a childhood dream on Sunday as they sealed tennis history for Canada with a first Davis Cup title by beating Australia 2-0 in Malaga. World number six Auger-Aliassime eased past Alex De Minaur 6-3, 6-4 to give Canada the trophy in Sunday's final at the expense of 28-time winners Australia. Earlier Shapovalov had given Canada, beaten finalists in 2019 to Spain, the first point with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Thanasi Kokkinakis. "The emotions are tough to describe," said 22-year-old Auger-Aliassime. "Denis and I grew up together dreaming of these types of stage, dreaming of winning the Davis Cup. It's a great moment for myself and for the country." De Minaur, ranked 24, paid for failing to convert any of his eight break points, hitting just five winners as Australia played their first Davis Cup final since 2003. Auger-Aliassime relied on his consistent serve with six aces and solid baseline play. Shapovalov meanwhile was fuelled by his desire for a first singles win this week. "Two tough losses this week and I'm very happy with the way I played today to get the win," said the 23-year-old. "It helped me being in the final before. Last time it was all kind of new, we were relieved just to be there but today we're very much going for the trophy." 'Tremendous chemistry' The 18th-ranked Canadian had been out of sorts in a semi-final defeat to Italy on Saturday but hit back against Kokkinakis with 23 winners to the Australian's five. Shapovalov raced to a 4-0 lead after quarter of an hour in Malaga, sealing the first set with his ninth winner after half an hour. The Canadian staved off three break points in the fourth game of the second set. Kokkinakis dug in to convert his first break point of four when Shapovalov was serving for the match and held serve but the Canadian was not to be denied sealing victory on his second match point. "It was tough to lose in 2019, it was an empty feeling and we wanted it badly this time, said Shapovalov. Canada had come a long way since they were eliminated in qualifying by the Netherlands back in March before being handed a wild card into the finals after the exclusion of Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine. Canada then finished second in Group B behind Spain in September, before eliminating Germany in the quarter-finals (2-1) and Italy in the semi-finals (2-1) earlier this week On Sunday, Canada's 2-0 unassailable lead meant that the final doubles rubber did not need to be played. "We've been dreaming about this for several years," said 32-year-old doubles specialist Vasek Pospisil. "To be here as world champions I'm speechless. These guys are not kids any more. They've been crushing it. You can't win this event without tremendous team chemistry."

Messi's magic helps Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 at World Cup

Vladimir Makei, the long-standing foreign minister of Belarus has passed away suddenly at the age of 64, the state news agency Belta reported on Saturday (November 26).

Makei, who held his post since 2012, was supposed to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Minsk on Monday.

Belta state news agency reported citing the foreign ministry spokesman Anatoly Glaz: "The Belarusian foreign minister Vladimir Makei has died suddenly."

Earlier this week, Makei attended a conference of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Yerevan. CSTO is a military alliance of several post soviet states.

Experts had expressed concerns ahead of Russia's "special military" operation in Ukraine that Moscow would send troops to the neighbouring nation via Belarus. But Makei had dismissed claims.

However, the Russians reportedly did it anyway as the Belarusian leadership—a close ally of the Kremlin—allowed Belarusian territory to be used by Moscow's troops in February.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova posted in her Telegram channel: "We are shocked by the reports of the death of the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Makei."

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko also expressed his condolences.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Turkey's minister of foreign affairs tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the news of Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei's passing away."

The tweet added, "He was a good man & a good friend. Extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family & the people of Belarus. May his soul rest in peace."

Russia's retreat from the key strategic city of Kherson two weeks ago marked a tectonic shift in the ongoing Ukraine war but the situation on ground zero is not favourable for the Ukrainians. The head of Ukraine's police claimed on Saturday (November 26) that at least 32 people in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson have been killed by Russian shelling since pro-Moscow forces pulled out. After the retreat, the Russian forces are now stationed on the eastern bank of the Dnipro. From that position, they have been shelling the city regularly, as claimed by Ukrainian officials. National Police chief Ihor Klymenko said in a Facebook post: "Daily Russian shelling is destroying the city and killing peaceful local residents. In all, Russia has killed 32 civilians in the Kherson region since the deoccupation." "Many people are evacuating to seek refuge in calmer regions of the country. But many residents remain in their homes, and we need to provide them with the maximum possible security," he continued. .@ZelenskyyUa: “We have to endure this winter – a winter that everyone will remember. We have to do everything so that we remember it not because of what it threatened us with, but because of what we managed to do to protect ourselves from this threat.”https://t.co/QvzJAcNv8f pic.twitter.com/nqNCVYq6Lt — MFA of Ukraine 🇺🇦 (@MFA_Ukraine) November 25, 2022 × As quoted by news agencies, a senior presidential aide said earlier on Saturday that electricity in the city has been restored. Last week a senior official said Ukraine would soon begin evacuating people who want to leave the region. The latest report by the news agency The Associated Press noted that vehicles stretched a kilometre or more on the outskirts of the city of Kherson as streamed out of the southern Ukrainian city. Moscow has dismissed the allegations its forces have abused civilians but Klymenko again alleged that investigators had recorded a total of 578 of what he described as war crimes committed by Russian troops in the region. Ukraine claims Russian shelling killed 32 in Kherson region since the retreat

The United States on Saturday eased some Venezuelan oil-related sanctions as company Chevron has been allowed to resume some activity in Venezuela.

Certain oil sanctions were eased by the Biden administration to support the negotiations that recently started between President Nicolás Maduro's government and its opposition.

After more than a yearlong hiatus, crucial talks between the Maduro government and the "Unitary Platform" resumed in Mexico City on Saturday as both sides announced a humanitarian agreement on education, health and other social issues.

The Treasury Department said it would allow Chevron to resume limited oil extraction operations in Venezuela. This comes after years of sanctions aimed at restricting oil and gas profits that have reportedly flowed to Maduro's government.

Previously, the California-based Chevron and other US companies were given permission again by the Treasury Department to do the basic upkeep of wells it operates jointly with state-run oil giant PDVSA.

As per the new policies, instead of providing profits to PDVSA, the profits from the sale of energy would be directed to paying down debt owed to Chevron.

A senior administration official said of the talks in Mexico that "we join the international community in welcoming the resumption of negotiations." The official further noted that the accord marked "important steps in the right direction" in Venezuela.

As quoted by the news agencies, Democratic Sen Bob Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement: "If Maduro again tries to use these negotiations to buy time to further consolidate his criminal dictatorship, the United States and our international partners must snap back the full force of our sanctions that brought his regime to the negotiating table in the first place."

Chevron to resume 'limited' energy production in Venezuela after years of sanctions

Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including a late winner, as holders France edged Denmark 2-1 on Saturday to become the first team to reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

A potent French side knew a second victory in as many Group D outings would take them through to the knockout phase and they were well worth the lead that Mbappe gave them when he opened the scoring at Stadium 974 just after the hour mark.

However, Andreas Christensen soon equalised for the Danes and Les Bleus needed Mbappe to deliver again in the 86th minute as he turned in Antoine Griezmann's cross to puncture the Danish resistance once and for all.

Having scored four during France's victorious 2018 campaign and one against Australia, Mbappe now has seven goals in nine World Cup appearances.

Didier Deschamps's side now have the luxury of going into their final group game against Tunisia knowing a draw will guarantee them top spot, and even a defeat may not prevent them finishing first.

Having come roaring back to batter Australia 4-1 in their opening match in Qatar, France were more wasteful in front of goal on this occasion but at least they did not come unstuck against opponents who have caused them problems before.

They were reigning champions when a defeat to the Danes knocked them out of the 2002 World Cup, while the sides played out the only goalless draw in 2018.

More recently Kasper Hjulmand's side beat France home and away in this year's Nations League, and it seemed that Deschamps had learned lessons from those two encounters.

If France were a shadow of their usual selves in Copenhagen in September, they were much better in this match, played in a pop-up stadium made of shipping containers on Doha's waterfront.

Deschamps changed three of his back four, with Theo Hernandez at left-back in place of his injured elder brother Lucas and Raphael Varane coming in for his first game in over a month.

Pace and power

But the French attack was untouched from the Australia game.

If Olivier Giroud took the headlines then, here Ousmane Dembele was electric at times on the right, Griezmann excelled in an advanced midfield role, and Mbappe made the difference.

France's pace, power and passing were all too sharp for the Euro 2020 semi-finalists who were lucky to go in level at half-time.

There were some French appeals for a red card in the 19th minute when Mbappe burst onto a beautiful threaded through ball by Griezmann only to be hauled down by Christensen, but the Danish defender escaped with a yellow.

The holders' best chances in the first half came from headers by Varane and Adrien Rabiot, but when Mbappe turned away from Joachim Andersen just before the hour mark and accelerated away, it was a sign that a goal was coming.

His shot was turned behind by Kasper Schmeichel, and Griezmann then wasted a great chance shortly after, but in the 61st minute Mbappe did score.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar linked up brilliantly with Hernandez on the left and met his teammate's cutback with a shot that beat Schmeichel thanks to a deflection off Christensen.

Denmark had offered little but suddenly they were level midway through the second half as Andersen nodded down a corner and his fellow defender Christensen headed home.

Hugo Lloris was then forced into a key save to deny Jesper Lindstrom and Martin Braithwaite grazed a post as Denmark threatened to turn the game completely on its head.

That would have been extremely harsh on France, even if they could only really have themselves to blame for not making more of their chances.

But Mbappe was not to be denied as he stole in front of Rasmus Kristensen at the back post with four minutes left to meet Griezmann's cross with his thigh for his 31st international goal.

US shoppers spent nearly 3% more online on Thanksgiving Day this year, a report showed, as consumers kicked off the year's biggest shopping event on a strong note and eased worries of a lackluster holiday season.

Adobe Analytics on Friday (November 25) said Thanksgiving sales hit a record $5.29 billion, even as inflation worries and holiday deals starting as early as October were expected to lead to a 1% decline.

With shoppers flocking to online sales, sparse but steady streams of Black Friday customers could be seen fanning out at Macy's flagship store in Midtown Manhattan.

Shoppers weathered the strain put on their household budgets by higher costs of everything from food to rent and continued to spend big heading into the holidays, lured by steep discounts for everything from toys to electronic gadgets.

Products such as strollers, speakers and outdoor grills flew off the shelves, the report said, with more shoppers taking to placing orders through their smartphones. Mobile shopping drove 55% of online Thanksgiving sales.

Black Friday is expected to bring in $9 billion from online sales, a modest increase of 1% from last year, with shoppers now flocking to brick-and-mortar stores after a pandemic-led pause over the last two years.

Adobe Analytics' analysis measures consumer transactions online covering over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail websites.
