Chinese defence minister Li Shangfu met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Sunday (April 16) and hailed ties between the two nations, state media reported on Monday.

Li said that Beijing is willing to work with Russia to have close strategic communications between their militaries. He also said that China pursue the strengthening of multilateral coordination and cooperation with Russia.

The defence minister further noted that the Russia-China ties have "already entered a new era". He said, "This is my first overseas visit since taking over as China's defence minister."

"I specifically chose Russia for this in order to emphasise the special nature and strategic importance of our bilateral ties," Li said.

News agencies reported that Putin welcomed military cooperation between Russia and China during the meeting, which was also attended by Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Emergency services were called to rescue a Canadian man who was trapped inside a piece of Edmonton public art made of large shining silver spheres, Canada-based CBC News reported. He was charged with one count of mischief after the firefighters helped him to escape the structure and also slapped a fine of $5,000. Earlier this month, firefighters were called to the Talus Dome sculpture in Edmonton, Alberta around 8:30pm (local time) to rescue 26-year-old Wakeem Courtoreille. Reports three teams of emergency responders, including a technical rescue team from the fire department, spent about an hour and a half removing him from the dome. The Talus Dome is made from 1,000 handcrafted stainless steel spheres. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services chief Troy Brady told CTV News Edmonton: "It's definitely a first for me. It's definitely different than what we would typically use it [the jaws of life] for." Canada: 26-year-old rescued from Edmonton public art, charged with mischief

In Sudan, the clashes between the army and the main paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have escalated and left dozens of people dead, including civilians during an apparent struggle for control. According to the reports citing pro-democracy medics, the death toll increased to 56 on Sunday (April 16). The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors said that "the total number of deaths among civilians reached 56" and it also said that there were "tens of deaths" among security forces but they were not included in that death toll.

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, an eyewitness described the violence in Kharkoum as sounding like a "thunderstorm". American tourist Lakshmi Parthasarathy told the news agency: "We woke up and went outside, there were fighter jets. There's just a lot of chaos going on. There was smoke everywhere."

Gunmen killed six adults and a child in central Mexico on Saturday, local authorities said as reported by news agencies. The officials further noted the incident, which took place in a resort in the small town of Cortazar (about 65 km south of Guanajuato city), caused panic among those who were present there.

A statement from City Hall in Cortazar read that police "arrived at the scene where they found...three dead women, three men and a seven-year-old minor, in addition to one person seriously wounded".

The authorities said the attackers went directly toward a group of people and opened fire. The local authorities also mentioned that attackers had removed the security cameras from the site before retreating.

The incident happened in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, which has seen a rise in drug-related violence in recent years. The region is increasingly plagued by drug cartel violence.

Brazilian president Lula says US should stop ‘encouraging’ Ukraine war

China has unveiled a new electromagnetic gun, aimed at controlling riots, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Sunday, citing a programme aired on the state broadcaster CCTV on March 28.

The reports mentioned that the gun fires coin-shaped bullets and could minimise the risk of causing fatal injuries. The speed and force of the bullets can be controlled and it can allow the authorities to disperse crowds. Authorities will be able to suppress riots without causing serious harm to civilians.

The product shown in a military technology programme was described as "non-lethal". However, it could reportedly penetrate wood and shatter glass bottles.

The China-based Global Times reported that the electromagnetic gun was comparatively superior to traditional firearms when it went through a firing test. It has low noise, little muzzle flash and low recoil.

The gun is known as the CS/LW21 and it is a handheld electromagnetic launcher. As mentioned by the news outlet, experts believe that technology marks a development trend for future weapons.

The gun was jointly developed by China North Industries Group Corporation Limited and other technology teams.

As quoted by SCMP, the gun's designer, Lei Fengqiao, told CCTV: "The gun is designed like coil guns, which use electric power to accelerate the projectile. When the nine-level coil is electrified, corresponding magnetic fields are formed, which allow the bullet to be sucked out by a relay race method."

"It is powered by a built-in lithium-ion battery that can continuously fire hundreds of rounds when fully charged. The charging time is also very short, with little influence from temperature," Lei added.

Thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday (April 15) against the government's planned judicial overhaul. People waved Israeli flags as they took to the streets of Tel Aviv and chanted "democracy" and "shame". Local news outlets reported that smaller protests took place in the northern port of Haifa and also outside the home of Justice Minister Yariv Levin in Modiin.

Mass protests erupted after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a "pause" to allow for dialogue on the reforms which were moving through parliament. As quoted by the news agency AFP, one demonstrator, Nadav Tamir, 61, said: "We are fighting for our democracy. We have no other country."

Karen Baron, a 45-year-old Tel Aviv psychiatrist, said: "I didn't want to come today but my sister told me, 'We have no choice', and it's true. We have no choice -- we can't lower our guard. We have to defend our country."

The proposed plan would give Netanyahu and his allies in the government the final say in appointing the nation's judges. Experts and analysts have warned that the judicial plan will wreak havoc on the country's economy and isolate Israel internationally. The plan is yet to be written into law.

But Netanyahu says the judicial reform will strengthen democracy and boost business. The Israeli prime minister is on trial for corruption charges he denies.

A day before, US rating agency Moody's announced it was lowering Israel's rating, which was made "stable" from "positive". It said the change "reflects a deterioration of Israel's governance, as illustrated by the recent events around the government's proposal for overhauling the country's judiciary".

It noted that "while mass protests have led the government to pause the legislation and seek dialogue with the opposition, the manner in which the government has attempted to implement a wide-ranging reform without seeking broad consensus points to a weakening of institutional strength and policy predictability".
