A new study has found that anti-Hindu hate is quite prevalent in British schools. The report titled 'Anti-Hindu Hate in Schools' stands out at the time when a Hindu, Rishi Sunak, is the prime minister of the country.

UK-based counter-terrorism think-tank Henry Jackson Society released a report on the study on Wednesday (April 19). It stated that 51 per cent of Hindu parents surveyed reported that their child had suffered anti-Hindu hate at school.

Teaching Hinduism was reported by some participants of the study as fostering religious discrimination towards Hindu pupils.

It mentioned that incidents such as Hindu pupils being bullied to convert to Islam, beef being thrown at another student, etc are among some examples that have been recorded and were faced by Hindu students.

The survey, which covered 988 Hindu parents and more than 1,000 schools around the country, concluded, "This report highlights the prevalence of discrimination against Hindus in British schools, with 51 per cent of Hindu parents surveyed reporting that their child has suffered anti-Hindu hate at school."

UK study finds massive anti-Hindu hate in schools

The crisis in Sudan continues to escalate as a new ceasefire attempt between Sudanese troops and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum was unsuccessful. The situation has worsened as food provisions are diminishing and there is also a breakdown of essential medical services. News agencies reported that explosions and gunfire resounded in Sudan's capital even on Thursday as fighting entered the sixth day.

Nations trying to evacuate their citizens from the conflict zone lobbied for a 24-hour ceasefire, which was supposed to come into effect at 16:00 GMT and the paramilitary forces had said that they would "fully commit to a complete ceasefire", and so did the army. But it didn't happen as the eyewitnesses in Khartoum said the fighting continued on Wednesday.

As quoted by AFP, Alawya al-Tayeb, 33, on her way out of the city, said, "Life in Khartoum is impossible if this war does not stop. I tried to make children not see the slain bodies on the streets," she said, adding that her youngsters are already suffering from trauma and will need treatment.

A statement released on Wednesday from embassies in Khartoum said that the ongoing violence killed at least 270 civilians in the last five days. The US Embassy wrote in a statement signed by 14 other diplomatic missions that the "toll has been high, with initial estimated civilian deaths of more than 270". It is assumed that the real toll is thought to be far higher with many wounded unable to reach hospitals.

Egyptian soldiers evacuated

The Sudanese armed forces stated that the 177 Egyptian soldiers captured by the paramilitary forces were evacuated on four Egyptian military transport planes Wednesday. The statement comes after the Egyptian army had earlier said it was "coordinating efforts with various Sudanese authorities for a safe return of all its soldiers to the country".

Both armies said that the soldiers were captured by RSF forces Saturday in the northern city of Merowe. The Egyptian soldiers were holding joint exercises with the Sudanese military.

News agency AFP detailed the situation noting that evacuation plans have been difficult to carry out as foreign diplomats have been attacked and the UN received reports of sexual violence against aid workers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced he would meet Thursday with the heads of the African Union, the Arab League and the regional bloc the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, his spokesman told reporters.

Explosions and gunfire resound in Sudanese capital as situation worsens

Western media reports on China's population being overtaken by India deliberately ignores China's development, using the topic to "bad mouth" it and advocate decoupling, state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday.

CCTV's sharply worded commentary said the subtext from Western media in recent years was that China's development was in "big trouble" and that when China's demographic dividend disappears, it would decline, and the global economy would also suffer.

"They slandered all the way and China has developed all the way, creating a miracle of sustainable and stable economic development with a huge population."

India is overtaking China as the world's most populous nation, and will have almost 3 million more people than its neighbour by the middle of this year, data released on Wednesday by the United Nations showed.

"The United States is stepping up efforts to contain China's development and advocate further decoupling and found new hype points from the United Nations report," CCTV said, adding that the West simply equated population size with development achievements.

"Such hype lacks a basic understanding of the law of population development. With the development of human society today, the decrease in birth rate and decline in willingness to bear children are common problems faced by the whole world," CCTV said, adding that Western developed countries generally faced problems such as labour shortages.

Last year, China's population fell for the first time in six decades, a historic turn expected to usher in a long period of decline in citizen numbers, with profound implications for its economy and the world.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said population dividends did not only depend on quantity but also on quality.

"Population is important but talents are also important...China has taken active measures to respond to population aging," Wang told reporters on Wednesday.

In Beijing's Guomao business district, Liu, a 40-year old working in finance, said it was an "inevitable phenomenon" that India's population has exceeded China but that his country's economic strength would dominate.

"Our economic strength will still exceed," he said adding that India's population growth "does not have any major impact on us. It doesn’t affect us much."

China slams Western hype of its population decline

The majority of us dye our greying hair, which is the first few prominent signs of ageing. We can't stop or reverse the natural phenomenon of ageing (the Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a dream, not the real world), but we can definitely work on preventing the signs to some extent.

A group of scientists believe they have found a mechanism for greying hair and according to them, treatment could help develop a treatment to alter cells so that the process can be reversed or halted. In a new study, scientists say that stem cells may get stuck and lose their ability to maintain hair colour as time passes.

Previously, experts noted that greying hair is caused when melanin-producing stem cells stop functioning properly. Some experts also said that reversible hypopigmentation of the hair can be seen in nutritional deficiencies protein-energy malnutrition and diseases of chronic loss of protein. It is also known that copper and iron deficiency also can cause greying of hair.

But what if we can stop the greying of hair?

Stem cells, which can differentiate into many different cell types, have an unusual ability to switch between growth compartments in follicles. With age, these cells lose their ability to move, resulting in greyness. Published Wednesday in the journal Nature, a new study in mice chalks out the issues that are linked to greying of our hair. The story is done on mice, but it has implications for people as the research was focused on cells called melanocyte stem cells, or McSCs.

A quoted by The New York Times, Mayumi Ito, an author of the study and a dermatology professor at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine: "This is a really big step toward understanding why we grey." Scientists have suggested that there could be a way in future to reverse or prevent grey hair if the findings hold true for humans.

As quoted by The Guardian, the study's lead investigator, Qi Sun, who is a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Langone Health, said: "The newfound mechanisms raise the possibility that the same fixed-positioning of melanocyte stem cells may exist in humans."

"If so, it presents a potential pathway for reversing or preventing the greying of human hair by helping jammed cells to move again between developing hair follicle compartments," Qi added.

Anurag Maloo: Missing Indian climber found alive in critical condition on Nepal's Mt Annapurna

The director of the Pentagon's new unidentified flying object (UFO) office said that the United States government is tracking more than 650 potential cases of so-called "unidentified aerial phenomena," but the official also noted that there's no proof of aliens yet.

There are several unproven claims of UFO sightings, but the Pentagon director quashed the buzz over unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) linked to claims of extraterrestrial life or of alien visits.

Sean Kirkpatrick, who is the director of the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), told a Senate Armed Services subcommittee on Wednesday that so far, there's "no concrete evidence of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology or objects that defy the known laws of physics".

Kirkpatrick noted that even so, UAP cases frequently "resolve into reasonably explainable origins" when a plethora of scientific evidence is available.

Kirkpatrick said during the hearing that "I want to underscore today that only a very small percentage of UAP reports display signatures that could reasonably be described as anomalous."

Pentagon: 'No credible evidence' of aliens yet, but tracking over 650 potential UFO cases

A "mysterious" spiral was spotted in Alaska as aurora watchers and photographers were intrigued to see the huge bluish-white shape in the sky early morning on Saturday (April 15). The shape looked mesmerising with the northern lights in the background.

The images and videos went viral on social media platforms, with people speculating what is it but scientists from The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks have said that the mysterious shape, which later faded away, could be linked to a SpaceX rocket launch that took place earlier on that day in California.

As quoted by the Independent, geophysicist Don Hampton said: "We learned that SpaceX had launched one of their Falcon 9 rockets into a polar orbit about two hours earlier, and watching a replay of their live feed showed the trajectory going right over Alaska."

Here's the video:

A "mysterious" spiral was spotted in Alaska as aurora watchers and photographers were intrigued to see the huge bluish-white shape in the sky early morning on Saturday (April 15). The shape looked mesmerising with the northern lights in the background. The images and videos went viral on social media platforms, with people speculating what is it but scientists from The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks have said that the mysterious shape, which later faded away, could be linked to a SpaceX rocket launch that took place earlier on that day in California. As quoted by the Independent, geophysicist Don Hampton said: "We learned that SpaceX had launched one of their Falcon 9 rockets into a polar orbit about two hours earlier, and watching a replay of their live feed showed the trajectory going right over Alaska." Here's the video: #SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from California. It carried the mission known as Transporter-7. Sudan unrest: Jaishankar appreciates his Saudi Arabian counterpart's assessment of situation

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered officials to go ahead with the launch of the first spy satellite as planned, state media reported on Wednesday (April 19).

Kim said that the satellite launch will boost the nation's capability of military observation of a region to locate an enemy or ascertain strategic features, in order to counter "threats" from the United States and South Korea.

News agency Reuters mentioned that a state media photo showed Kim, accompanied by his daughter, talking to officials in front of a blurred image of an apparent satellite.

Last year in December, North Korea conducted what it called an important "final phase" test for a spy satellite. It also said it would complete preparations for the launch by April.

State news agency KCNA said that during a visit to the National Aerospace Development Agency on Tuesday, Kim demanded that the satellite be launched on time and that other reconnaissance satellites be launched in various orbits to improve the nation's monitoring capabilities.

"Securing real-time information about the hostile forces' military scenario" is the "most important" task," Kim said, also denouncing the deployment of US strategic assets in the region as an attempt "to turn South Korea into an advanced base for aggression and an arsenal for war."

"He (Kim) said that possession of such satellites is a primary task to be indispensably fulfilled to bolster up the armed forces of the DPRK ... and belongs to its sovereignty and legitimate right to self-defence," KCNA said, using the initials of the country's official name.

According to the state media, Kim also said that "as the US and South Korea are scheming to further tighten their military posture against the DPRK ... it is quite natural for the DPRK to develop its military deterrence strong enough to cope with the serious security environment at present and in the future."

China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean has become a matter of concern for New Delhi and Western allies, and now a new report shows that Beijing is increasing its Antarctic footprint.

A Washington-based think tank has gathered information based on new satellite imagery, which suggests that construction has resumed for the first time since 2018 on China's fifth station in the southern polar region.

The report released on Tuesday by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) showed that China is making "significant progress" in Antarctica after a several years-long gap in construction.

China wants to develop new shipping routes in the Arctic and further expand its research in Antarctica, and in doing so, it is not alone as countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea have research stations in the region.

But Western governments have raised concerns over China's increasing presence in the polar regions, which could provide the People's Liberation Army (PLA) with better surveillance capabilities.

The CSIS said in its report that the new station, on Inexpressible Island near the Ross Sea, is expected to include an observatory with a satellite ground station.

Experts and analysts believe that the observatory should help China "fill in a major gap" in its ability to access the continent.

Satellite images taken in January helped the CSIS team to identify new support facilities, temporary buildings, a helicopter pad, and foundations for a larger main building at the 5,000 square metre station. The report suggests that the construction could be done by 2024.

CSIS said, "While the station can provide tracking and communications for China's growing array of scientific polar observation satellites, its equipment can concurrently be used for intercepting other nations' satellite communications."

Satellite images show China increasing construction on new Antarctic station

The world is quite fascinated with the British monarchy. Not just Britons, but people around the world are intrigued by the castles and jewels owned by kings and queens, and their net worth can be jaw-dropping. New reports on the British monarchy have shed light on how rich is King Charles III is, as his personal fortune is now public information.

The Sunday Times Rich List showed that King Charles is significantly wealthier than his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, as the monarch's fortune is around £600 million, which is a significant increase over the late Queen's estimated £370 million fortune from the previous year.

The Times list, which will be published next month and will include 350 names, showed that the wealth of King Charles will surpass that of Sir Elton John the musician and footballer-musician couple David and Victoria Beckham.

UK-based media outlets, citing one of the monarch's former aides, revealed how the 74-year-old rebuilt his finances after his multi-million-pound divorce from Princess Diana in the 1990s.

King Charles and his projects

The report also mentioned that King Charles raised the Duchy of Cornwall's annual profits by 42.6 per cent between 2011 and 2022. The total now stands at £25.4 million. As quoted by Express, the former advisor said that Charles was "tucking away some money" from the Duchy and the exact amount has never been revealed, although the sum has been described as "several tens of millions".

Reports also mentioned that the King also introduced his Duchy Originals line more than 30 years ago, releasing goods from his Highgrove House estate that were first offered through Harrods and Fortnum & Mason, and eventually made available in Waitrose. Products from his line included biscuits, beer, herbal medicine and garden tools were later added.

King Charles also created a sustainable development in Dorset before starting a similar project in Cornwall. The Times report mentioned that during this time, the duchy increased its revenue by renting out commercial assets in Cornwall, Milton Keynes, and London.

King Charles is also the owner of the Crown Estate, which is an organisation with £15.6 billion in royal fortune that cannot be sold because it is not part of the Royal Family.

As quoted by the Mirror, Royal author Robert Hardman said: "A lot of people do get confused about the royal finances — wrongly thinking that [the royal family] personally own the Crown Estate and the duchies."

Hardman added: "In all honesty, their financial arrangements really aren't as complex as [those of] many royal families and rulers in other countries, which are often far more opaque. Our monarchy really isn’t as wealthy as many people would believe. I certainly don't think the King is a billionaire."

What did King Charles inherit?

Charles became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, died last September. The formal coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6. The moment he ascended the throne, he not only assumed the position for which he had been training his entire life, but also he received the inheritance of a priceless collection of real estate, jewels (some stolen, some controversial), artwork, heirlooms, and money.

Blue-chip stock market shares and bonds made up a large portion of the late Queen's extensive financial portfolio, which is estimated to be worth about £100 million. Prince Philip's will was not made public, which makes it unclear exactly how much was handed to Charles by the prince.

Almost 30 other senior royals' sealed wills who passed away since 1910 were kept in a safe in London with Queen Elizabeth's. King Charles also likely inherited the Queen Mother's £70 million fortune, which passed to the Queen when the Queen Mother passed away.

'The Firm'

As we learn about King Charles's personal wealth, it is also important to know about 'The Firm' (also known as "Monarchy PLC"), which exists independently from King Charles. The Royal Firm is not King Charles's personal money and a report by Forbes mentioned that the firm holds around $28 billion in assets (the report was published at the time of the Queen's death).

The firm includes the Crown Estate, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Duchy of Cornwall, the Duchy of Lancaster, and the Crown Estate of Scotland. King Charles uses these resources to carry out his duties as king, but he is not allowed to sell them because they belong to the Crown and will be given to Prince William when he succeeds him as king, and so on. But notably, The Sovereign Grant is a mechanism whereby the royals receive a personal percentage of income from the firm's assets.

As we are talking about millions worth of wealth, we must mention the inheritance taxes, and in the case of King Charles, he doesn't have to pay any—a different matter of discussion.

'The Firm' As we learn about King Charles's personal wealth, it is also important to know about 'The Firm' (also known as "Monarchy PLC"), which exists independently from King Charles. The data comes after the UN's World Population Prospects 2022 had projected India to surpass China as the world's most populous country in the mid of 2023.

The latest data by the UNFPA's "The State of World Population Report, 2023" stated that India's population is 1.4286 billion while China's stood at 1.4257 billion. The report is titled - "8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: The Case for Rights and Choices".

As quoted by news agencies, Andrea Wojnar, the representative for UNFPA India, said in a statement: "The Indian survey findings suggest that population anxieties have seeped into large portions of the general public."

She added, "Yet, population numbers should not trigger anxiety or create alarm. Instead, they should be seen as a symbol of progress, development, and aspirations if individual rights and choices are being upheld."

Status of women in the country

The report also highlighted the issues of women's decreased right to bodily autonomy. According to the SWOP report, 44 per cent of partnered women and girls in 68 reporting countries do not have the right to make informed decisions about their bodies on matters of sex, contraception and seeking health care. Close to 257 million women worldwide have an unmet need for safe, reliable contraception.

Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director at Population Foundation of India, said in a statement: "So many women lack control over their bodies, including the right to have children - to decide when they want to have them and how many."

The UNFPA has recommended that governments must create policies with "gender equality and rights at their heart, such as parental leave programmes, child tax credits, policies that promote gender equality in the workplace, and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights."
