Pakistan political crisis: Govt deploys army to quell riots; PTI leaders, activists arrested

Indian Supreme Court ruled on Thursday (May 11) that the New Delhi government has legislative and executive powers over services, a massive boost to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s government in the capital of the nation, which trmed the verdict a "victory of democracy".

SC heard the Centre versus the Delhi government case over the demarcation of power. A constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said an elected government needs to have control over the administration — a decision opposite to Justice Ashok Bhushan's 2019 judgment that the city government has no power over the issue of services.

The constitution bench was set up to hear the legal issue concerning the scope of legislative and executive powers of the Centre and the National Capital Territory government over control of services in Delhi.

AAP's leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hailed the decision, as he said, "Heartfelt thanks to the Hon'ble Supreme Court for doing justice to the people of Delhi." Kejriwal added in a tweet in Hindi, "With this decision, the pace of development of Delhi will increase manifold. Democracy won."

The officials have said that Kejriwal will go to the Delhi Secretariat for the first time in many months and hold a meeting with his cabinet after the top court verdict. The party said that the Lt Governor will have no power over the officers to stop the work of the people of Delhi.

Nepal-based media outlets reported that Amaresh Singh, who is an independent member of the House of Representatives, removed his shirt when the Speaker did not allow a slot for him to speak when the meeting started. Concerns have been raised about the scam in Nepal after the police recently arrested former parliamentarian Indrajit Rai — a case linked to sending Nepalis to the United States in the guise of Bhutanese refugees. Rai was an advisor to former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa. He has been charged with issuing fake documents to Nepali citizens, identifying them as refugees. The process helped them go abroad easily. The matter came into the limelight after Kantipur published multiple reports highlighting his involvement in the document forgery. After the reports, an arrest warrant was issued.
China's Ministry of Public Security has used a controversial video of blackfaced Chinese performers dancing to Bollywood tunes, supposedly to teach people about road safety. However, the video has sparked outrage for its "racist" content.

The official account of the Chinese ministry posted the video on its Weibo account on Saturday, South China Morning Post reported. The one-minute clip was also shared on Twitter by a user.

In the video, the Chinese performers can be seen wearing turbans and colourful clothes as seen in an Indian song from the 1990s.

As quoted, the ministry's Weibo post accompanying the video read: "Motorcycle da da da #Police reminder: Seat belts should also be worn in the rear seats. Remember when riding a motorcycle, you can't go on the road without a helmet!"

The video has garnered over 190,000 views on Weibo in China but faced massive flak from Indian users on Twitter as they labelled it racist and inappropriate.

The report has mentioned that the video has been picked from a popular Chinese video-sharing platform called Bilibili. In the video, the performers were seen dancing, while the man can be seen asking the girl to ride on his bike.

Chinese users liked and shared the post, but some defended the video, saying that the famous song was "monumentally" popular in China and an example of "Indian soft power".

One user wrote on Twitter, "This is hilarious at best. From Chinese colleagues know for sure that Chinese people are more into Indian movies & accept Indian movies as better.
A schoolboy reportedly went missing on Tuesday (May 9) when in Northland, New Zealand. News agencies reported citing officials that the boy was on a school trip to caves, and at the same time heavy rain and thunderstorms caused flash flooding and landslides across the upper North Island.

As quoted by news agency Reuters, New Zealand police Superintendent Tony Hill said in a statement that a group of high school students got into difficulty and one person was missing at the Abbey Caves, near Whangarei.

Hill said that at about 10.35 am (local time), it was reported the group was in difficulty. Some of the group had "made it out" safely, but one student remained unaccounted for. He added, "Our thoughts are with the 'whanau' (family) of the missing child, as well as all those involved in the group outing and the school."

Hill said: "The incident is still very much developing and we will provide further updates as they become available. Our thoughts are with the whānau of the missing child, as well as all those involved in the group outing and the school."

Issuing a safety advisory, the city's mayor, Wayne Brown, said that "Auckland is experiencing widespread flooding and torrential rain. Please take care and follow advice."

Authorities have informed that a search and rescue operation is currently underway with crews from the police and the fire service being deployed in the area.

Local media reported that the group was apparently from Whangarei Boys High School. A source told the New Zealand-based Herald that the trapped group was a Year 11 outdoor education class. The school authorities announced on its Facebook page that the school would close early on Tuesday but did not specify the reason.

In recent days, the area has received heavy rains. The local civil defence authority said that the region is under a severe thunderstorm warning.

New Zealand: Student missing during school trip to Abbey Caves amid poor weather condition

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday (May 9) that Beijing is expelling Canada's consul in Shanghai — a tit-for-tat move after Ottawa announced it was sending home a Chinese diplomat, who is accused of trying to intimidate a lawmaker. China also warned Canada to stop "unreasonable provocations".

Beijing retaliated and promised to take "resolute countermeasures" when Canada expelled Chinese diplomat, Zhao Wei, declaring him "persona non grata" and further ordering her to leave the country. The incident has triggered a new diplomatic row between the nations amid persisting unsolved issues. Zhao has been asked to leave Canada within five days.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that the government will "not tolerate any form of foreign interference" in its internal affairs. She said, "We remain firm in our resolve that defending our democracy is of the utmost importance." Joly added that the foreign diplomats in Canada "have been warned that if they engage in this type of behaviour, they will be sent home."

China sees it as a provocation as it said that the move had "sabotaged" relations between the two nations. A statement from the Chinese embassy in Canada said: "The Chinese side will take resolute countermeasures and all consequences arising therefrom shall be borne by the Canadian side." The statement further called on Ottawa to "step back from the brink".

What was the case?

The row erupted when reports in local media emerged alleging that China's intelligence agency had planned to target parliamentarian Michael Chong and his relatives in Hong Kong with sanctions for voting in February 2021 for a motion condemning Beijing's conduct in the Xinjiang region as genocide.

The Globe and Mail newspaper last week cited a Canadian Security Intelligence Service document as saying that this was "almost certainly meant to make an example of this MP and deter others from taking anti-PRC (People's Republic of China) positions."

Trudeau's reaction to the whole incident

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the nation won't be intimidated by China's move. Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa: "We decided that we needed to move forward in a responsible way to send a very clear message that we will not accept foreign interference and whatever next choices they make, we will not be intimidated."

Escalating tensions between China and Canada

Tensions have been escalating between the nations ever since Trudeau was asked to take strict action against Beijing in the aftermath of reports that China apparently attempted to sway Canada's 2019 and 2021 elections.

In an unveiled reference to China, several critics have also pointed out the rumours of foreign meddling in elections. As quoted by news agency AFP, Genevieve Tellier, a politics professor at the University of Ottawa, said, "There was a real political risk for the Trudeau government in this affair, which is taking a gamble by showing its muscles in this way."

Tensions between China and Canada have been simmering for a long time, and several incidents worsened the situation. One such incident was Canada's arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in 2018 and the detention of two Canadian nationals, Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor, in China in apparent retaliation. All three have been released, but the ties remain strained.

Beijing was accused of using the two men in a bout of "hostage diplomacy" to pressure Ottawa into releasing Meng. Reconciliation efforts were must less than the issues that kept embroiling both sides.

In September 2021, Meng, who is also the daughter of the Chinese telecom giant's billionaire founder, was allowed to return to China, thanks to a deal with US prosecutors. The two Michaels were also released immediately after that. All charges against Meng were also dropped by the US Justice Department in December 2022.

Uyghur "genocide" is another matter of contention between both nations as Canada has been vocal about China's alleged human rights violations. The accusations have worsened relations.

In fact, Canadian lawmakers even voted overwhelmingly in 2021 to declare China's treatment of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities in its northwestern Xinjiang region as "genocide".

In February 2023, the Canadian parliament unanimously passed a non-binding proposal to take in 10,000 Uyghur refugees who have fled China but are now facing pressure to return.

Fuel was added to the fire after Chinese President Xi Jinping scolded Trudeau on camera at the G20 summit in Indonesia last year in November — an incident which became quite popular. Video recorded by reporters at the summit showed Xi slamming Trudeau over the leaked details of talks between them.

The comments came after Trudeau raised with Xi the issue of what he called Chinese "interference" with Canadian citizens and Beijing's alleged meddling with Canada's democratic and judicial systems.

Not just diplomatic rows, both nations have also engaged in tech battles, with Canada moving to curb the presence of Chinese firms in its communications infrastructure. Canada even banned a few Chinese apps over national security concerns.
