Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview published on Tuesday (May 2) that he wasn't informed about the leaks of secret US documents. In an interview with the Washington Post, Zelensky said: "I did not receive information from the White House or the Pentagon beforehand."

He added, "It is unprofitable for us. It is not beneficial to the reputation of the White House, and I believe it is not beneficial to the reputation of the United States."

In the aftermath of the leak of the documents, which remained in the headlines last month, US officials said they were investigating the matter. The Pentagon had said that the leak presents a "very serious" risk to national security.

When the documents appeared online, they become an embarrassment and also a headache for the US authorities as highly sensitive military and defence documents were shared and circulated on multiple social media platforms. The leak released details of secret information linked to the Ukraine war, Israel's spy agency Mossad, South Korea, and more.

The set of leaked documents, labelled as "Secret" and "Top Secret", included materials related to Ukraine and its military, telling a partial tale of the ongoing war. The Ukrainian defence minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said on April 12 that the Pentagon document leaks contained a mixture of true and false information about his country's military and downplayed its negative impact.

One document suggested that the Ukrainian air defences are in deep crisis. The air defence systems have emerged as one of Ukraine's key strengths to counter Russian missile and drone strikes. Ukraine even urged the allies to supply fighter jets to help in its fight against Russian aggression.

Documents show that the munitions for Soviet-era air defence systems deployed by Ukraine will soon run out and a document dated February indicates that the S300 missile defence system is expected to run out of munitions by May this year and the SA-11 Gadfly system at the end of March.

Volodymyr Zelensky says White House did not warn him about secret documents’ leak

The first day of the fifth month of 2023 should have been normal for a Minnesota lawmaker, but the technology had to intervene and make him viral for reasons he won't like.

Minnesota's Office of the Legislative Auditor was to hold a vote as the members met virtually, but little did State Senator Calvin Bahr know about the faux pas that technology could lead to as he briefly appeared on screen topless.

In the small clip of the virtual meeting on Zoom, viral on social media platforms, Bahr of East Bethel can briefly be seen voting with the Legislative Audit Commission. In the call, a School House Rock "I'm Just a Bill" character was seen on the wall behind him.

After the voting, he quickly turned the camera off and left the black screen, which kept showing his name.

French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire's novel is grabbing the world's attention, but definitely not in a positive way. An erotic passage from the novel has gone viral and is being widely mocked.

The contents of the novel titled - Fugue Américaine (American Fugue) - have become a controversy, a situation that probably will not be liked by French President Emmanuel Macron amid the ongoing protests.

The issue has also forced people to ask the government to explain how the minister finds the time for such penmanship at a time when the nation is facing economic trouble.

The American Fugue portrays a world different from Frace's current picture, also seen by Le Maire as he has been on the front line of defending Macron's controversial pension reform.

The plan led to months of sometimes violent protests but the government says is necessary to balance the books.

His novel tells a different story in the fictional world, but the minister in the real world faces pressure to help the French deal with the rising cost of living due to surges in fuel prices and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The novel is based on the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz and tells the story of two brothers, Franz and Oskar Wertheimer. The brothers travel to Cuba to attend one of his concerts, following which their lives turn upside down.

One single page of the novel has gone viral and has taken all the attention as it describes Oskar having sex with a woman named Julia in excitedly erotic and also deeply explicit terms. MP for the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party Francois Ruffin said the minister should not have "a minute, an hour, a week of his time to devote to writing a book" when the French are experiencing "big worries about inflation".

Amid the criticism, his colleague Olivier Dussopt defended him by saying that he has the right to write but also admitted that he had not read the new novel.

He told BFMTV, "This shows that there are feelings... behind the suits of the ministers." He further added that he had seen the erotic passage and it "made him smile".

Novel by French minister mocked for containing breathlessly erotic passage

A tragic shooting incident took place at a school in Serbia's capital Belgrade on Wednesday (May 3), killing a total of nine people, including eight students and a security guard. A teacher and some other students were injured, said the interior ministry.

The ministry added that a 14-year-old boy shot his teacher in the classroom, and after that, he opened fire on other students and security guards. The seventh-grade student had been arrested, the police said.

As reported by news agency Reuters citing a local channel, Milan Milosevic, the father of one of the students at the Vladislav Ribnikar elementary school, said his daughter was in the class when the shooting incident took place. As quoted, Milosevic told broadcaster N1: "She managed to escape. (The boy) ... first shot the teacher and then he started shooting randomly."

The shooter had a 'detailed' plan and list of people he wanted to kill, police said.

The school is located in the central Vracar district and the mayor from there, Milan Nedeljkovic, said doctors were fighting to save the teacher's life. Six children had been hospitalised along with the teacher.

Milosevic, who rushed to the school after the shooting, said, "I saw the security guard lying under the table. I saw two girls with blood on their shirts. They say he (the shooter) was quiet and a good pupil. He recently joined their class."

A girl who attends a high school adjacent to Vladislav Ribnikar told state TV RTS: "I saw kids running out of the school, screaming. Parents came, they were in a panic. Later I heard three shots."

Security in the surrounding region has been beefed up and officers in helmets and bulletproof vests have cordoned-off the area around the school.

Ukraine's Zelensky in surprise visit to Finland for Nordic PM summit

Is mind reading possible? An age-old question with multiple unproven answers. Those who study psychology often claim that they can understand what the other person is saying as they study mental processes, brain functions, and behaviour, but even they can't be 100 per cent accurate.

A study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, attempts to address it as scientists have said that they have come up with a way to decode a stream of words in the brain using MRI scans and artificial intelligence.

The study titled — "Semantic reconstruction of continuous language from non-invasive brain recordings" — noted that the system won't replicate each word but it reconstructs the brief of what a person hears or imagines.

Alexander Huth, a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of neuroscience and computer science at The University of Texas at Austin, said: "It's getting at the ideas behind the words, the semantics, the meaning."

Of course, the system won't be able to read minds as it only works when a participant is actively cooperating with scientists.

In the study, published on May 1, it was mentioned that a system of a non-invasive decoder, which reconstructs continuous language from cortical semantic representations recorded using functional MRI, has been introduced.

"Given novel brain recordings, this decoder generates intelligible word sequences that recover the meaning of perceived speech, imagined speech and even silent videos, demonstrating that a single decoder can be applied to a range of tasks," part of the study mentioned.

The authors have also stated that they have tested the decoder across the cortex and found that continuous language can be separately decoded from multiple regions.

They added that we tested whether successful decoding requires subject cooperation and found that subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder — as brain–computer interfaces should respect mental privacy.

They said, "Our findings demonstrate the viability of non-invasive language brain–computer interfaces."

To derive the result, the researchers trained decoders for three subjects. They evaluated each subject’s decoder on separate, single-trial brain responses that were recorded while the subject listened to novel test stories that were not used for model training.

The researchers said that as their decoder represents language using semantic features rather than motor or auditory features, its predictions should capture the meaning of the stimuli.

"Results show that the decoded word sequences captured not only the meaning of the stimuli but often even exact words and phrases, demonstrating that fine-grained semantic information can be recovered," the study mentioned.

MRI scans and AI to decode what we think? This study has answers

Twitter chief Elon Musk has "threatened" to reassign National Public Radio's Twitter account to another company, the U.S.-based broadcaster said on Tuesday.

Musk suggested that he would reassign the network's main account, under the @NPR handle, to another organization or person, NPR said.

NPR stopped posting content to its 52 official Twitter feeds last month in protest against a Twitter designation that implied government involvement in its editorial content.

Musk, in an email to an NPR reporter, asked about its engagement with Twitter, the public broadcaster said.

"So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?" NPR quoted Musk as saying.

"Our policy is to recycle handles that are definitively dormant," he said in another email. "Same policy applies to all accounts. No special treatment for NPR."

NPR and Twitter did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for comment.

According to Twitter's policy, users should log in to their account at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.

PBS and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation followed NPR and stopped posting on Twitter following similar labeling.

Twitter later dropped the labels but the outlets that were targeted have not resumed activity, their profiles showed on Tuesday.

Elon Musk threatens to reassign NPR Twitter account, NPR says

Keir Starmer, Britain's opposition leader, said that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has "questions to answer" after reports emerged that his wife holds a stake in a company that was given public money.

Sunak's spouse, Akshata Murty, reportedly controls an investment company called Catamaran Ventures Ltd and a report by the Sunday Times mentioned that Catamaran has a stake in Study Hall, which is an education start-up that was given almost £350,000 of UK grant money.

The Times reports noted that Study Hall was founded by Sofia Fenichell, who previously ran a company called Mrs Wordsmith which collapsed in 2021.

On the grant award by Innovate UK, the Study Hall has been termed as a firm that is "developing a cutting-edge AI-based adaptive learning and assessment platform that can accelerate student progress".

"I think there are questions to answer in relation to this, there seems to be an emerging pattern of behaviour here, so I think the sooner those questions are answered, the better," Labour leader Starmer said while speaking from Blackpool as he campaigned ahead of Thursday's local elections.

This update comes amid Sunak facing a probe into concerns that he did not properly declare Akshata's shares in a childcare agency that benefited from the Budget.

Innovate said that the adaptive learning and assessments being developed by Study Hall could "help optimise the large sums of public and private funds invested in high-dosage tutoring and school intervention programmes" when it also announced the funding for the 12-month period between August 2022 and August 2023.

UK PM Rishi Sunak has ‘questions to answer’ on wife Akshata Murthy’s financial interests: Keir Starmer

A truce along the Israel-Gaza border appeared to be holding on Wednesday morning following a brief bout of fighting triggered by the death of a jailed Palestinian hunger striker.

After Palestinian militants fired rockets at Israel through the night and Israeli jets struck in Gaza, a ceasefire mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations appeared to hold as the sides signalled little interest in further escalation.

The exchange began on Tuesday soon after the announcement of the death of Khader Adnan, a political leader of the Islamic Jihad faction, designated by the West and Israel as a terrorist group.

Adnan had been on hunger strike for 87 days as he awaited trial on security charges. He was found unconscious in his cell and taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead after efforts to revive him, Israel's Prisons Service said.

Palestinian leaders accused Israel of causing the death of Adnan, the first Palestinian hunger striker to die in Israeli custody in more than 30 years.

In Gaza, armed Palestinian factions including Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rocket salvoes fired towards Israel, where one person was seriously injured.

The Israeli military said that in response it attacked Hamas posts and weaponry sites.

'WEAK RESPONSE'

A 58-year-old man died in northern Gaza city as a result of an Israeli air strike on a Hamas training camp near his house, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

His son Adam, 16, said a brick that flew dozens of yards away from the bombed site hit the zinc ceiling of one room, where he and his father slept and a large stone fell on his father's chest.

"He was unable to breathe properly. We took him to the hospital, they said he suffered an internal bleeding and died at dawn," the son said, pointing at a hole in the ceiling and bricks on the floor.

Exacerbating tensions in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, Jewish Power, the party led by far-right police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, said the strikes were "a weak response."

But with explosions rocking Gaza and rocket sirens sending Israelis fleeing to their bomb shelters, residents on both sides were weary of yet another round of fighting.

"The children were terrified. This makes no sense," said Gaza resident Sufian Kaskeen.

The Sudan crisis continues to escalate and considering the current security situation in the African country, India has temporarily relocated its embassy from the violence-hit capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday: "In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan."

"The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments," the MEA further added. Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan and is located at a distance of around 850 kilometres from Khartoum.

The embassy was shifted after news agency Reuters reported that India's embassy in Khartoum was stormed and looted, Sudan's army said in a statement, citing a report from the ambassador. But the incident hasn't been conformed by India yet.

The report further added that Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said early on Wednesday that its building in Khartoum that houses its cultural mission was similarly vandalised and looted by an armed group.
