Documentaries and history books have told us about King Tutankhamun, who was one of the most prominent pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Now, scientists have reconstructed his face after 3,300 years, unveiling what he would have looked like during his reign.

A new study published in the Italian Journal of Anatomy and Embryology mentioned that teams from Australia, Italy and Brazil utilised a digital model of his mummified skull and managed to re-create the face of King Tut.

As quoted by reports, Brazilian graphics expert and co-author Cicero Moraes said, "He looks like a young man with a delicate face. Looking at him, we see more of a young student than a politician full of responsibilities, which makes the historical figure even more interesting."

Moraes said that the team's lack of direct access to the former pharaoh's head made modelling extremely challenging.

But fortunately, the researchers were able to access documents from prior studies that included references to skull measurements as well as photographs of King Tut.

Moraes explained, "It was detective work, where traces of information were concatenated in order to provide us with a three-dimensional model of the skull."

"With the proportion data and some important cephalometric measurements, it was possible to take the digital skull of a virtual donor and adjust it so that it became the skull of Tutankhamun," Moraes added.

About King Tutankhamun's life

Tutankhamun is a vital part of ancient Egyptian history. He accomplished a lot in his short life after he ascended to the throne around the age of nine and reigned until his death around the age of 19.

Tutankhamun (also known as Tutankhamon, Tutankhamen or, Tutankhaten) was the antepenultimate pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of ancient Egypt.

Sarcophagus of Pharaoh Ramses II unveiled in Paris

Last month, the sarcophagus of ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II was unveiled to reporters in Paris on Thursday following its rare journey outside of Egypt. The ornate coffin will be on show to the public in the French capital from April 7 to September 6. Benedicte Lhoyer, a scientific advisor to the exhibition, told AFP the "exceptional" loan was thanks to "an unprecedented cooperation between France and Egypt".

The Ramses II exhibition is on a tour that includes the United States and Australia, but only France is receiving the sarcophagus, in recognition of the assistance from French scientists who helped save the mummy from decay following a previous visit to Paris in 1976. The mummy itself has stayed behind this time, since Egyptian law now forbids transporting royal mummies abroad.

A Boeing 777 aircraft of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was seized by authorities in Malaysia reportedly over a lease dispute on Tuesday.

Pakistan-based news outlets reported that after a court order, the aircraft, which was acquired on lease from Malaysia, was seized at Kuala Lumpur International Airport over non-payment of dues worth $4 million.

However, the airline refuted the claims, stating that it owned the aircraft. It noted that the leasing company only owned one of the mounted engines.

As reported by DAWN, PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez Khan said that the actual due amount is $1.8mn and it has been apparently paid to the company.

Notably, for the same issue, the same aircraft was seized by the airport authorities in 2021 as well. However, it was released later after an assurance from Pakistan.

AerCap Holdings NV, which is reportedly the lessor, didn't comment on the matter yet.

DAWN report mentioned that the passengers of the flight were accommodated on an alternative aircraft. The PIA spokesman concluded that the disputed aircraft will operate as a normal commercial flight from Kuala Lumpur.

The leasing business said the Pakistani flag carrier stopped making payments in July 2020, according to a report in Simple Flying.

It stated that it had launched a case against PIA in the London High Court in October for failure to pay a lease fee of around $14mn, which had been outstanding for six months.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday that actions will be taken against rival Sudanese leaders in the aftermath of the collapse of a US-brokered truce. This comes after the army announced its withdrawal on Wednesday.

While speaking to reporters, Blinken said that the US is "looking at steps that we can take to make clear our views on any leaders who are moving Sudan in the wrong direction, including by perpetuating the violence and by violating ceasefires that they've actually committed to".

The power struggle continues to rage in the North African nation between the army and the main paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which started in April.

However, Blinken did not mention what actions will be taken by the US. He is currently in Oslo for NATO talks, where he reaffirmed that the US would remain engaged.

Blinken also acknowledged wide violations of a series of ceasefires brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

Blinken said, "We did see the provision of humanitarian assistance going forward. But it has been incredibly imperfect and incredibly fragile."

"Now we're seeing actions -- again, by both sides -- in clear violation of the commitments they made," he added.

US imposes sanctions

On Thursday, the US imposed sanctions on companies it accused of fueling the conflict in Sudan. The sanctions were announced as the West puts pressure on the warring parties to bring an end to the fighting.

The US Treasury Department said in a statement it targeted two companies affiliated with Sudan's army and two companies affiliated with the rival RSF, accusing them of generating revenue from the conflict and contributing to the fighting.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in the statement: "Through sanctions, we are cutting off key financial flows to both the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces, depriving them of resources needed to pay soldiers, rearm, resupply, and wage war in Sudan."

"The United States stands on the side of civilians against those who perpetrate violence towards the people of Sudan," it added.

The announcement of sanctions came after a number of US lawmakers and activists criticised President Joe Biden's administration for not taking action earlier. US diplomats have argued that it was more useful to preserve relationships to negotiate between them.

US considering action against Sudan leaders: Antony Blinken

The ongoing Ukraine war continues to escalate with the recent Russian aggression, with Western calls to provide Kyiv with advanced weapons and long-range missiles.

Now, French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday (May 31) called on the West to offer Ukraine "tangible and credible" security guarantees.

He added, "That is why I'm in favour, and this will be the subject of collective talks in the following weeks... to offer tangible and credible security guarantees to Ukraine."

Macron said that various NATO members could provide these guarantees to the war-torn nation, Macron said, "We have to build something between the security provided to Israel and full-fledged membership."

Latest Russia-Ukraine war development

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told CNN on Wednesday that the Kremlin is concerned about the situation in Belgorod.

Peskov said, "We are indeed concerned about this situation, shelling of civilian objects continues there. In this case, too, by the way, we have not heard a single word of condemnation from anyone from the collective West, so far. The situation is rather alarming. Measures are being taken."

It appears that the war, which majorly remained in Ukrainian territories, is gradually reaching Russia, as recently Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram that four people were injured in a "massive strike" on the town of Shebekino in Russia's southwestern region.

Gladkov said, "Two were promptly taken to a hospital in Belgorod. The man has shrapnel wounds to the neck and back, the condition is serious, and the woman has shrapnel wounds to the arm and forearm. Doctors are now conducting all the necessary examinations."

Putin jolted NATO

While speaking to reporters in Bratislava, Macron said that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had jolted NATO awake by invading Ukraine last year. The French president said that he had a "harsh word for NATO in December 2019".

He recalled how he had called the Western defence alliance "brain dead" at the time. He added, "I can say that today Vladimir Putin jolted it awake with the worst of electric shocks."

Macron also said that a European defence structure was "indispensable" for the bloc's credibility in the long-term. He said, "A Europe of defence, a European pillar within NATO, is indispensable. It's the only way to be credible... in the long-term."

He also added that it was "up to us Europeans to in the future have our own ability to defend ourselves."

Macron calls on West to offer Ukraine 'tangible and credible' security guarantees

An Indian official has been slapped with a fine of $640 (Rs 53,092) by the government after he recently ordered to drain a reservoir in the Chhattisgarh state to find his lost phone — an incident that happened a few days back. The official Rajesh Vishwas was posted at Pakhanjur town in Kanker district as a food officer, and he now faces allegations of misusing his position.

He was suspended on May 26 after he allegedly asked that water from a reservoir be pumped out to retrieve his lost phone which had fallen down while taking a selfie.

Media reports have mentioned that around two million litres (440,000 gallons) of water was drained out for a phone worth about $1,200. The water of the Kherkatta Dam was emptied in over two days starting Tuesday.

Vishwas’ suspension was confirmed by Kanker Collector Priyanka Shukla, who said as mentioned by media reports: "The official had no authority to drain the water. Hence, he has been suspended."

Shukla said, "He has been suspended until an inquiry. Water is an essential resource and it cannot be wasted like this."

India: Official fined $640 for ordering to drain reservoir water to retrieve phone he dropped

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) grabbed headlines last year after reports emerged that it has dropped a few important chapters from the Class 10 syllabus.

Hence, those who have reached class 10th this year will find it a bit different to what their seniors read — a change that will impact some 134 million 11–18-year-olds in schools across the nation.

A report, first published by Nature, stated that a chapter on evolution would be cut from the syllabus after people protested last month, but in addition to that the periodic table has also been dropped from the syllabus of class 10th. The report also mentioned that topics such as sources of energy and environmental sustainability have also been dropped.

In recent months, NCERT has focused on the rationalisation of syllabi to bring about necessary changes. The process means the board removes certain topics from its textbooks.

In June 2022, NCERT deleted certain topics from Class 10 textbooks, saying, "In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to reduce the content load on students." Reports say that the changes were announced last year, but the books with updated chapters are only now circulating in the market.

Initially, it was meant for children studying online, but now NCERT has decided to continue with the deletions of topics.

Why did NCERT remove those topics?

In a document, titled "List of Rationalised Content in Textbooks for Class X", the government organisation gave an explanation for the action.

On its website, NCERT also stated that it considered whether content overlapped with similar content covered elsewhere, or in the higher class. They also considered the difficulty of the content, and whether the content was irrelevant. The government organisation also noted that the change will help provide opportunities for experiential learning and creativity.

The move means those who would opt for science as a subject in class 11, will study the periodic table in Chemistry in NCERT books.

The NCERT document mentioned that "it is imperative to reduce the content load on students" in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. "The National Education Policy 2020, also emphasises reducing the content load and providing opportunities for experiential learning with creative mindset," it added.

"In this background, NCERT has undertaken the exercise to rationalise the textbooks across all classes. Learning outcomes already developed by the NCERT across classes have been taken into consideration in this exercise," he further said.

NCERT drops references to Khalistan

The NCERT has dropped references to the demand for a separate Sikh nation Khalistan from the class 12 Political Science textbook following objections from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), according to top education ministry officials.

The SGPC had last month alleged that the NCERT misrepresented historical details about Sikhs in its Class 12 political science textbook.

The Sikh body's objection pertained to the mention of the Anandpur Sahib resolution in the book "Politics In India Since Independence".

Read the document here × The NCERT document mentioned that "it is imperative to reduce the content load on students" in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fuss over evolution theory & periodic table: Know why NCERT dropped key chapters

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered an investigation after some idols of the Mahakal Lok corridor were damaged in a storm in Ujjain — a famous city in the central Indian state.

Despite an official inquiry, the "political storm" over the incident continues to rage as the opposition party has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of corruption in the Mahakal Lok corridor, whose first phase was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Mahakaleshwar temple premises in October 2022.

Over the last weekend, gusty winds knocked down six of the seven idols of 'Saptarishis' which were installed at a corridor developed on the temple premises.

While speaking about the incident, Chouhan told reporters: "I am getting the matter inquired and have sought a report."

Allegations of corruption

The opposition Congress in the state has levelled allegations against BJP and constituted a committee to conduct a probe, a party leader said on Monday. Piyush Babele, who is the media advisor to MP Congress chief Kamal Nath, told news agency PTI that the party has constituted a seven-member committee, which includes five party legislators.

Nath said, "When the then Congress government of Madhya Pradesh had resolved to make a grand construction of the Mahakal temple complex in Ujjain, it could not have imagined that the subsequent government would commit serious irregularities in the construction of Mahakal Lok."

Mahakal Lok corridor: Political storm rages after wind knocks down idols in Ujjain temple

A mass wedding in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh grabbed headlines after condoms and contraceptive pills were found inside make-up boxes given to brides as gifts. Media reports have mentioned that the ceremony took place in Jhabua district on Monday.

As many as 296 couples tied the knot at the mass wedding organised under Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana. The scheme is basically for women who come from economically weaker sections.

When the controversy because of these items in the gift pack started snowballing, a senior district official Bhursingh Rawat laid the blame on the state health department.

As quoted by the Indian Express report, Rawat said that the health officials might have planned providing condoms and contraceptives to the new couples to raise awareness regarding family planning.

Rawat told The Indian Express: "We are not responsible for distributing condoms and contraceptive pills. There is no provision in the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah for the provision of such a kit."

"We have told the local administration officials to keep a check on this in future and conduct a door-to-door campaign instead of distributing condoms at the mass weddings. This is a tribal area with a low literacy rate. People don’t have a lot of scientific temperament, so keeping that in view we will make sure this doesn’t happen again," he added.

The news outlet quoted Dr Ashok Patel, a district family and welfare officer, as saying: "There was confusion at the event. We saw over 200 newlyweds at one place and thought we could target them. We had over 200 of our own health workers who educated them on the kit."

"But some people could not understand… there were couples who thought this was a part of dowry… It would take us over one month to track them all down and distribute these kits,” Patel added, divulging details about the 'Nai pahal' kit, which is provided to newly married couples by the local ASHA workers.

Was it a well-intended move?

UN's World Population Prospects 2022 had projected India to surpass China as the world's most populous country in the mid of 2023 and the nation will have now more population than China. UN report estimated that India's population is 1.4286 billion while China's stood at 1.4257 billion.

While the population also generates infinite possibilities, experts have called for reforms and policies to control the growth in order to provide a better quality of life to all individuals and sustainable development.

And such a move, aimed at spreading awareness shouldn't become an issue.

Madhya Pradesh: Condoms, birth control pills part of ‘vanity kit’ at mass wedding event

South Korean nuclear safety experts who visited Japan's wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant said on Wednesday that detailed analysis was needed to verify Japan's plan to release tonnes of contaminated water from it into the sea.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station, about 220 km (130 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was destroyed by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011, triggering three reactor meltdowns.

Japan plans to dump more than one million tonnes of contaminated water that was mainly used to cool the reactors into the sea by around this summer, triggering alarm at home and abroad, especially in fishing communities.

"Given our closest location, we are reviewing whether Japan has an appropriate discharge plan from a scientific and technological standpoint," Yoo Guk-hee, chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, who led a delegation on a site visit last week, told a briefing.

The Japanese utility responsible for the plant, and the Japanese government, say the water is safe after being treated, filtered and diluted though it does contain traces of tritium.

Yoo said there had been progress in checking facilities and securing samples and documents but further work was needed to reach any conclusion about the water's safety.

"Additional detailed analysis and checks are required," he said.

During its six-day trip, the 21-member South Korean team had focused on water purification, transport and release equipment, as well as sampling and analysis facilities.

The visit came days after President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a summit in Seoul this month amid a thaw in relations following years of tension between the neighbours, both important U.S. allies.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is also conducting a safety review of Japan's plan to release the water. It is expected to announce its results in the coming weeks.

Space scientists are working hard to find life outside planet Earth, and coming up with theories which suggest that, maybe, we are not alone in this infinite universe. In the same pursuit, European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed that an alien signal has been beamed to Earth from Mars for the first time — which was sent by them only.

The Trace Gas Orbiter, which is an ESA spacecraft orbiting Mars, transmitted a signal and it was received by the Green Bank Telescope (West Virginia), the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station (Italy), the Allen Telescope Array (California) and the Very Large Array (New Mexico).

The transmission is part of "A Sign in Space" project, which is an interdisciplinary project by media artist Daniela de Paulis.

The project stated that decoding an extraterrestrial signal and understanding its message would present unprecedented challenges. Researchers at each institution were then tasked with deciphering the signal.

ESA mentioned on its website: "The Sign in Space project invites participants to delve into the realm of the unknown and grapple with these existential quandaries, expanding our collective understanding of the Universe and our place in it."

De Paulis said, "Throughout history, humanity has searched for meaning in powerful and transformative phenomena. Receiving a message from an extra-terrestrial civilisation would be a profoundly transformational experience for all humankind."

In a statement, ATA Project Scientist Dr Wael Farah, said, "This experiment is an opportunity for the world to learn how the SETI community, in all its diversity, will work together to receive, process, analyse, and understand the meaning of a potential extraterrestrial signal."

"More than astronomy, communicating with ET will require a breadth of knowledge. With A Sign in Space, we hope to make the initial steps towards bringing a community together to meet this challenge," it added.

'A Sign in Space': When Earth received ‘alien’ signal from Mars

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday (May 31) that Iran has apparently significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium in recent months, continuing its nuclear escalation.

However, IAEA has received a "possible explanation" from Iran over nuclear material at an undeclared site and has decided to close the file, news agency AFP reported citing a report it has seen.

In its report, IAEA said that the estimated stockpile of enriched uranium in Tehran had reached more than 23 times what was set as the limit.

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 and Iran agreed to a pact with six major powers (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States + Germany) to limit its nuclear programme. It was harder for Iran to obtain a weapon in return for relief from economic sanctions.

But former US President Donald Trump reneged on the deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. Trump's decision led Tehran to start violating the agreement's nuclear limits about a year later.

But in recent time, there has been negotiations and talks to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but so far, there has not been any breakthrough.

The limit in the 2015 deal was 202.8 kilograms, but the report by AFP mentioned that Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 4,744.5 kilograms (10,459 pounds) as of May 13.

According to the report, Iran is continuing its enrichment of uranium to levels higher than the 3.67 per cent limit in the deal.

The stockpile of uranium enriched up to 20 per cent is now believed to be 470.9 kilograms — up 36.2 kg since the last report in February — while the amount enriched up to 60 per cent stands at 114.1 kilograms, an increase of 26.6 kg.

Notably, enrichment levels of around 90 per cent are required for use in a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, the report seen by AFP has come days before the board of governors of the IAEA is due to meet to review progress in addressing the watchdog's remaining concerns.

And the IAEA said in a separate report that it has decided to close the file relating to the presence of nuclear material at one undeclared site after receiving a "possible explanation" from Iran.

The UN nuclear watchdog "has no additional questions... and the matter is no longer outstanding at this stage", the report said of the site at Marivan in Abedeh County.

Iran's enriched uranium stockpile over 23 times the limit of 2015 deal: Report

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to launch a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination next week, news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday (May 31), citing a person familiar with the matter.

The report also mentioned that Christie will officially launch his campaign at a town hall at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

US-based news outlet CBS News reported that some of his longtime allies have formed a political action committee, which is known as Tell It Like it Is, in order to support him. The group is focused on reflecting Christie's personality.

Christie advised former president Donald Trump's campaign in 2016 and was seen as a close ally of the former president. He had also run for the top job. However, he later became a vocal critic of Trump.

The 60-year-old has now called Trump a "coward" and "puppet" of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Several media reports have mentioned that Christie may emerge as the only candidate in the race who will remain critical of Trump, and speak about him regularly as he has done so far.

Since the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters, Christie has slammed Trump multiple times.

He blamed the former president for the Republicans' disappointing showing in the 2022 midterm elections. Christie even urged his party to move on from Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 election was rigged, including in his book "Republican Rescue."

In March, Christie said at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, "You better have somebody on that stage who can do to him what I did to Marco [Rubio] because that's the only thing that's gonna defeat Donald Trump."

Christie was referring to a 2016 debate when he had mocked Sen. Marco Rubio for "memorised 30-second speeches".

He further noted, "And that means you have to be fearless, because he will come back, and right at you."

What to expect?

Now, his nomination is almost certain, but only one per cent of Republicans in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted May 9-15 said he would be their preferred nominee.

However, some Republicans would want to bank on his anti-Trump narrative and might support him. But there's a massive chance of alienating Trump's still-powerful base of voters.

Christie was also a candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination but was beaten by eventual nominee Mitt Romney.
