Mandeep Singh batted through the innings just two days after the death of his father to see Punjab Kings XI to a fifth straight Indian Premier League.

Singh hit 66 and Chris Gayle 51 as unfancied Punjab beat Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets and moved into the playoff places for the first time.

Punjab had lost five games before the current winning streak. They have beaten table toppers Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to force their way into contention.

Shubman Gill hit 57 and captain Eoin Morgan 40, but Kolkata managed only 149-9 off their 20 overs.

Singh led the latest Punjab victorious onslaught as they reached 150-2 with seven balls to spare.

He put on 47 for the first wicket with captain KL Rahul and then 100 with Gayle, who smashed five sixes in his 51.

"This was very special. My father always used to tell me you should remain not out in the game. This one is for him," said Singh who pointed to the sky on reaching his 50, in tribute to his athletics coach father.

Singh said he had to convince Rahul to let him play a slower game while the captain and Gayle went for the runs.

"I told Rahul, 'if I play my natural game, I can see this through'. So he was okay with me taking my time and he went after the bowling."

Rahul and Gayle understood Singh's emotions.

"I am just so proud of him, he made everyone emotional," said Rahul.

"It was so good to see him look up to the sky. We knew it was a message to his dad," said Gayle.

The defeat was a double blow for Kolkata who lost fourth place on run rate to Punjab.

Both teams have 12 points from 12 games with two to go.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday (May 28) that it's time to unite around "national goals", after winning a historic runoff election that guarantees his rule at least until 2028. The results were made official late at night and revealed that Erdogan has won the presidency with 52.14 per cent of the votes.

The stunning victory has made Erdogan the most important figure in modern Turkish history, but his political journey, which led him to where he is now, hasn't been an easy one.

He was not projected to win, but the 69-year-old Erdogan emerged to be the ultimate political survivor. He defeated his secular opposition rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, by four percentage points.

He has overcome jail and a bloody 2016 coup attempt, economic development and political strife. Earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks in February posed one of the toughest challenges ahead of the election.

He made several visits to the quake-hit zones where more than 50,000 died and also vowed to implement rapid reconstruction works and to punish builders who skirted building regulations. He accused the opposition of seeking advantage from a catastrophe.

Erdogan claims that he has introduced various reforms, but he is also accused of slipping into authoritarianism reminiscent of the Ottoman sultans and not abiding by Turkey's democratic foundations.

The early life of Erdogan

Erdogan was born in Istanbul on February 26, 1954, and graduated from Kasımpaşa Piyale Primary School in 1965. He completed his high school education at Istanbul Imam Hatip School (Religious Vocational High School) in 1973.

Interest in politics was quite evident as Erdogan became known as a fiery orator in the cause of political Islam when he was in high school.

Apart from politics, he was also actively interested in football — a sport which taught him the significance of teamwork and spirit in his younger years. But his inclination towards politics was definitely more.

After being born in a working-class, Erdogan made his name in nascent Islamic movements that were challenging secular domination, becoming the city's mayor in 1994.

However, he was convicted and jailed for four months for inciting religious hatred when he recited a fiery poem that compared mosques to army barracks and called minarets "our bayonets", which led to cutting short of his mayoral term.

Discussion over Sweden's NATO bid, efforts to reconcile with Syria, and earthquake reconstruction, are some of the burning issues that Erdogan will have to take action on.

Opponents accused him of turning a blind eye to corruption and lax building standards that allowed entire cities to crumble in the February 6 earthquake.

Rise and rise of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan: Name etched in gold, but challenges not over

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko offered, during an interview, that nations will be provided with nuclear weapons if they are willing "to join the Union State of Russia and Belarus".

This comes just days after Lukashenko said that Russia had begun moving nuclear weapons to its territory, which borders the European Union.

The movement and re-stationing of "tactical" nuclear weapons in Belarus led to condemnation from the West and also flared up tensions with The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nations over the Ukraine conflict.

Media reports have claimed that Lukashenko's comment came during an interview with Russia's Pavel Zarubin, which was filmed on Thursday but was released on Sunday on Ukrainska Pravda.

He claimed that any nations who joined the "Union State" pact between Russia and Belarus would be provided with nuclear weapons, calling the prospect a "unique chance to unite".

As quoted by reports, Lukashenko told Zarubin: "If someone is worried... I don't think [President of Kazakhstan] Kassym Tokayev is worried about this, but if something suddenly happens, then no one minds Kazakhstan and other countries having the same close relations as we have with the Russian Federation."

"It's very simple. [Countries] should join the union of Belarus with Russia, and that's it: there will be nuclear weapons for everyone," he added.

For the unversed, Russia and Belarus are formally part of a Union State, which is a borderless union and alliance between the two former Soviet republics.

So far there are details regarding what Lukashenko exactly wanted to say or whether or not there's a formal plan to invite nations to join the "Union State" of Russia and Belarus.

Russia sending nuclear arms to Belarus

Earlier this week, when reports emerged that Russia was sending nuclear arms to Belarus in the Ukraine fight, Lukashenko said, according to state news agency Belta: "It was necessary to prepare storage sites, and so on. We did all this. Therefore, the movement of nuclear weapons began."

While promising the safety of those weapons, he said, "This is not even up for discussion. Don't worry about nuclear weapons. We are responsible for this. These are serious issues. Everything will be alright here."

Lukashenko, who is a close ally of Putin, has allowed his territory, which borders Ukraine as well as EU and NATO members Poland and Lithuania, to serve as a staging ground for Russia's Ukraine offensive.

The Russia-Ukraine war started last year in February when Putin ordered his troops to launch a "special military operation" against the neighbour. Since the start of the war, each have accused the other of nuclear war provocation.

Lukashenko's promise: Nukes for those who join 'Russia-Belarus union state'

In the United Kingdom, the Metropolitan Police officers will stop attending mental health crisis calls in order to focus on crime, The Guardian reported on Sunday (May 28).

The report mentioned that in a letter, seen by the outlet, Mark Rowley, who is the Met's chief officer, said that an order will be issued to his officers not to attend thousands of calls they get every year to deal with mental health incidents.

The letter was reportedly sent on May 24 to health and social care services, with a deadline of August 31. After the deadline, the new scheme will come into force.

The Met chief believes the change is necessary as officers are being sidetracked from their primary mission of combating crime, and patients who require medical professionals are being let down when a police officer attends instead.

In the letter, Sir Mark stated that it takes over 23 hours on average from the time someone is detained under the Mental Health Act until they are given over to medical care.

But BBC has reported that mental health charity Mind raised concerns over the plan and Zoe Billingham said the proposals could create a "vacuum". Billingham was previously Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue.

He writes that his officers spend more than 10,000 hours per month on "what is principally a health matter," and that police and other social services are "collectively failing patients" by not ensuring they receive appropriate help, as well as failing Londoners more broadly due to the impact on police resources.

He mentions in the letter that Humberside Police's right care, right person (RCRP) strategy, ensured that mental health calls were handled by medical professionals rather than officers.

As quoted by news reports, part of the letter mentioned: "It is important to stress the urgency of implementing RCRP in London. Every day that we permit the status quo to remain we are collectively failing patients and are not setting officers up to succeed. In fact, we are failing Londoners twice.

"We are failing them first by sending police officers, not medical professionals, to those in a mental health crisis, and expecting them to do their best in circumstances where they are not the right people to be dealing with the patient," it added.

"We are failing Londoners a second time by taking large amounts of officer time away from preventing and solving crime, as well as dealing properly with victims, in order to fill gaps for others," it further added.

United States President Joe Biden said on Sunday (May 28) that a final bipartisan deal to raise the US debt ceiling now heads to Congress. The deal was struck with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy just a few days before the deadline day.

Biden has urged "both chambers to pass that agreement" and also noted that he did not make too many concessions to end a debt limit crisis.

In a brief appearance before the media at the White House, Biden said, "I think it's a really important step forward. It takes the threat of a catastrophic default off the table."

While speaking to reporters, Biden said that he believed McCarthy negotiated in good faith and had the votes to pass the agreement, which the president said protects his key policy priorities and is "good news" for the American people.

Meanwhile, the deal has given a sigh of relief to millions of people who were to lose jobs, and there was also a risk of a global meltdown.

As reported by US-based news outlets, McCarthy told a presser that it is expected that over 95 per cent of House Republicans will support the 99-page bill. In a statement, he also said that the deal would stop "out-of-control" spending by Biden. He argued that it "forces the Executive Branch to find dollar-for-dollar savings in the government for costly rules and regulations, so that executive overreach is reined in and held accountable".

Top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell urged his colleagues to quickly pass the legislation on the deal. He said, "The Senate must act swiftly and pass this agreement without unnecessary delay."

America was on the verge of default if the government would have failed to agree to raise the borrowing limit from its current 31.4 trillion dollars in order to maintain paying the nation's debts.

Republicans wanted Biden to sign up for spending cuts in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling, but Democratics called for a "clean" increase of the borrowing limit with no strings attached.

Now the basic framework of the deal suspends the federal debt ceiling, for two years — which is apparently enough to get past the next presidential election in 2024 and allow the government to keep borrowing money and remain solvent.

It takes the threat of a catastrophic default off the table." While speaking to reporters, Biden said that he believed McCarthy negotiated in good faith and had the votes to pass the agreement, which the president said protects his key policy priorities and is "good news" for the American people. The Speaker and I made clear from the start that the only way forward is with a bipartisan agreement. This agreement is an important step forward, and now it will go to the United States House and Senate. Delhi: Man stabs minor girl more than 20 times, smashes her 'lifeless' body with stone slab

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Friday (May 26) updated the debt default deadline to June 5 from June 1, as she feared that the treasury may run out of cash. She warned of a possible US debt default if Congress fails to raise the ceiling on borrowing.

In a letter to the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, Yellen said, "Based on the most recent available data, we now estimate that Treasury will have insufficient resources to satisfy the government's obligations if Congress has not raised or suspended the debt limit by June 5."

Yellen stated that the United States is likely to run out of money to clear its bills by June 5.

The recent estimation has provided some breathing room since the Treasury Department has pushed back the date when the government's money will run out.

However, Yellen warned that the deadline extension does not change the urgency to end the standoff in Congress.

America stands on the verge of default if the government does not agree to raise the borrowing limit from its current 31.4 trillion dollars in order to maintain paying the nation's debts.

Republicans say President Joe Biden must sign up for spending cuts in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling, ignoring repeated Democratic calls for a "clean" increase of the borrowing limit with no strings attached.

And if at all the deal gets finalised, it must pass both chambers of Congress and therefore hinges on bipartisan support. Republicans control the House 222-213, while Democrats hold the Senate 51-49.

Notably, there were glimmers of hope as unconfirmed US media reports stated that a compromise in the works would involve an agreement to extend the government's borrowing authorisation for two years, ensuring that the present drama does not repeat itself before the presidential election in 2024.

Meanwhile, McCarthy told reporters that negotiators had "made progress", but he also added: "Nothing is agreed to until it's all agreed to."

If Congress fails to raise its self-imposed debt ceiling before the deadline, it might result in a default, causing financial markets to tremble and sending the nation into a deep recession.

In a recent development, the International Monetary Fund on Friday (May 26) said that the US interest rates will likely need to remain higher for longer to tame inflation, and Washington needs to tighten fiscal policy to bring down its federal debt.

Default would harm military

Top US officer General Mark Milley said on Thursday that a US government default would harm the country's military, hitting readiness and morale. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told journalists at the Pentagon that "there would be a very significant negative impact on the readiness, morale and capabilities of United States military if we defaulted" as well as "reputational damage internationally."

Red-hot Shubman Gill smashed his third century of the IPL season to help defending champions Gujarat Titans hammer Mumbai Indians by 62 runs on Friday and set up a final against Chennai Super Kings.

Red-hot Shubman Gill smashed his third century of the IPL season to help defending champions Gujarat Titans hammer Mumbai Indians by 62 runs on Friday and set up a final against Chennai Super Kings. Gill's 126 off 60 balls powered Gujarat to 233-3, a total they defended by bowling out five-time winners Mumbai for 171 in 18.2 overs in the final playoff which started late due to rain in Ahmedabad. Gill hit 10 sixes in his knock and put on a second-wicket stand of 138 with Sai Sudharsan, who made 43, to tear into the opposition attack at the world's biggest cricket stadium. He became the leading batsman this season with 851 runs, surpassing Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis (730), before he reached his IPL best and the top score of this season. Fast bowler Mohit Sharma took five wickets for Gujarat, who won last year's crown in a fairytale debut season, after a valiant 61 by Suryakumar Yadav. The 132,000-capacity stadium had over 75,000 fans in attendance to witness the home team triumph. The final will played on Sunday at the same venue after M.S. Dhoni's Chennai beat Gujarat in the first playoff earlier this week. Opener Gill, who is tipped as the future of Indian batting, made the most of a reprieve on 30 when Tim David dropped him off England fast bowler Chris Jordan. The 23-year-old Gill brought up his fifty in 32 balls and then exploded to smash sixes and reach his hundred in 49 balls, taking a bow amid a standing ovation. He finally fell to Akash Madhwal and Sudharsan retired out before skipper Hardik Pandya, who made an unbeaten 13-ball 28, and Rashid Khan finished the innings on a high with 19 runs in the final over. Mumbai's worries increased when wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan was injured after he was caught by the elbow of team-mate Jordan. He was later replaced by concussion substitute Vishnu Vinod. Tilak Varma struck 43 off 14 balls as he smashed Mohammed Shami for four fours and a six in an over but was soon bowled by Rashid's leg spin. Suryakumar attempted to mount the chase in his 38-ball knock and put on a key 51-run stand with Cameron Green, who hit 30 in a stop-start innings after being hit on the elbow by Pandya. Suryakumar made his fifty in 33 balls but was bowled Mohit, who struck twice in one over to derail the innings. Rashid trapped David lbw for two and hopes ended for Mumbai, who last won the crown in 2020. Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans: 233 for 3 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 129; Piyush Chawla 1/45). Mumbai Indians: 171 all out in 18.2 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 61; Mohit Sharma 5/10). WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IPL 2023: Shubman Gill shines as GT storm into final after beating MI by 62 runs

European Sleeper, a startup railway company launched the first direct sleeper train between Berlin and Brussels in more than a decade this week, and it is now operational. Passengers were served champagne on board to commemorate the event.

The aim of the company is to push for less polluting alternatives to air travel in Europe.

The sleeper train is the only direct nightly service between the two capitals since 2009. The first train left Brussels at 7:22pm (1722 GMT) on Friday and was scheduled to arrive in Berlin at 8:01am (0601 GMT) on Saturday.

European Sleeper was set up in 2021 and its first overnight route is from Brussels to Berlin. The railway will be expanded to Dresden and Prague in 2024, with further routes planned.

European Sleeper's co-founder Chris Engelsman said, "We're making good progress" when it comes to the financing side for extra carriages and "this is one of the areas where the European Commission can help".

With the inauguration of the Brussels-Berlin route, Engelsman also hopes to capitalise on a sudden increase in interest in rail which is seen as a green alternative to cheap airfares.

Engelsman said, "It's a nice way to travel - especially by night train, it is a very pleasant way, it's very comfortable and it's also an adventure. Your holidays start when you are boarding."

He also weighed in on the challenges, as he stated that establishing the service had been tough due to the lack of cross-border slots and a lack of cooperation across national railway networks.

"We think there is a major challenge in the administrative and bureaucratic processes on the track access, the infrastructure managers because they are organised nationally in essence and they are all different. The rules are all different. The regulations are terrible," Engelsman added.

Engelsman said that he got Belgian subsidies to establish the route. An upcoming night service train from Amsterdam to Barcelona, which is scheduled to start in 2025, will be one of ten pilot cross-border train services slated to get financial backing from the European Commission, he further mentioned.

'Nice way to travel'

Laurence Couvreur, 49, a passenger and doctor living in Brussels, told news agency Reuters, "I think it's the best (means of transport). It's the best for the climate but it's also a nice way to travel."

"It's a nice way to meet people, to meet people from the country, to take time. For me, it was already nice before (the Brussels-Berlin night service was suspended in 2009). And that it came back - I find it amazing - except the price," Couvreur added.

On being asked about why she picked the train, Heather Grabbe, 52, a passenger and political scientist living in Brussels, told Reuters, "I love trains both because they are sustainable. I believe that we must have low-carbon transport and trains are by far the best way of travelling with much lower impact on the environment than flying and also than driving. So I want to support the train industry."

Night train connecting Brussels-Berlin starts operations. Push for less polluting alternatives to air travel

Olivier Vandecasteele, a Belgian humanitarian worker who had been jailed in Iran for 15 months, arrived in Belgium late Friday after being deported in a military plane, images broadcast on television showed.

The 42-year-old was received on the tarmac of the Melsbroek military post outside Brussels by his parents, sister, and other family members after he was released on Friday.

The images shown on RTL-TVI channel showed that the plane bringing him back from Oman landed shortly after 9:30pm (1930 GMT).

Vandecasteele was arrested during a visit to Iran in February 2022 and sentenced to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes in January on charges that included spying.

The Belgian government said on Friday they had reason to believe that Iran had been planning to increase his sentence.

Iran's foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said earlier that in the swap, a diplomat, Assadolah Assadi, was released from Belgium.

Assadi was jailed in Belgium over a 2018 plot to bomb an Iranian opposition rally outside Paris.

The Iranian foreign minister tweeted that Assadi, "the innocent diplomat of our country... is now on his way back to his homeland and will soon enter our beloved Iran".

Oman's foreign ministry said in a statement that "the Omani efforts have resulted in an agreement between the two sides for a mutual exchange deal" and both Belgium and Iran thanked Oman for its role in securing the release.

Belgium prime minister's comment

Belgium has always claimed that Vandecasteele was innocent and after news of his release, Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said, "Olivier spent 455 days in prison in Tehran in unbearable conditions. Innocent."

"For me, the choice has always been clear. Olivier's life has always come first. It's a responsibility that I take upon myself, that I accept. In Belgium, we do not abandon anyone," he added.

Aid worker arrives in Belgium after prisoner swap with Iranian diplomat

A sailing boat off the coast of southern Spain on Thursday (May 25) was severely destroyed by killer whales, news agency Reuters reported citing the local maritime rescue agency. This issue has become serious as scores of orca assaults on vessels have been recorded this year on the Spanish and Portuguese coasts.

The pod punctured the hull of the Mustique and also shattered the rudder on its route to Gibraltar. The spokeswoman for the maritime rescue agency said that the damage forced the ship's four-man crew to seek assistance from Spanish authorities.

Endangered orcas are actually members of the dolphin family, but they are known as killer whales. As adults, they can grow to be up to eight metres long and weigh up to six tonnes.

The spokesperson said that the agency sent a rapid-response vessel and a helicopter carrying a bilge pump to assist the 20-metre vessel, which was travelling under the British flag. It also added that the Mustique was transported to Barbate port in Cadiz province for repairs.

April Boyes, a British sailor, was aboard the Mustique and posted photos and footage of the orcas' destruction to her Instagram account.

She can be heard saying in the videos that "it's like they are biting it apart". "What started off as a seemingly unique encounter ended with orcas breaking off our rudder from the boat, then proceeding to tear bits off the boat for an hour," she later said.

"A huge hole in the hull meant we had water ingress to other parts of the boat and the engine room and I can honestly say it was a scary experience. We are all safe, I'm feeling grateful for the coastguard."

Killer whales attacks

The GTOA, a research organisation, which records populations of the Iberian orca subspecies, stated that this incident comes after at least 20 confrontations between small vessels with the highly gregarious apex predators in the Strait of Gibraltar this month alone. There were 207 documented encounters in 2022.

Earlier in May, the sailing vessel Alboran Champagne was hit by three orcas half a nautical mile off the coast of Barbate. Because the ship was entirely inundated, it could not be dragged and was allowed to sink.

In guidelines, the Spanish Transport Ministry stated that whenever ships witness any change in the conduct of orcas, such as unexpected changes in direction or speed, they should leave the region as quickly as possible to avoid further disturbance to the animals during the movements.

The government also stated that any interaction between a ship and an orca must be notified to authorities.
