Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday (May 24) officially confirmed his 2024 US presidential bid. Papers filed with the Federal Election Commission showed that DeSantis has launched his challenge to Donald Trump for the party's 2024 White House nomination. He tweeted a video to make the announcement ahead of an audio interview on Twitter with its CEO, Elon Musk. DeSantis wrote: "I'm running for president to lead our Great American Comeback." In the video, he said, "We need the courage to lead and the strength to win. I'm Ron DeSantis, and I'm running for president to lead our great American comeback." "Government is not about entertainment, not about building a brand," DeSantis said, taking a veiled swipe at Trump, whom he quite expectedly never mentioned by name. “American decline is not inevitable — it is a choice. And we should choose a new direction — a path that will lead to American revitalization,” DeSantis said, racing through his conservative accomplishments. “We had a huge audience,” DeSantis said in a subsequent interview on Fox News when asked about the technical difficulties. “It was the biggest they ever had. It did break the Twitter space. We’re really excited about the enthusiasm.” Twitter crashes The highly-publicised interaction of Ron DeSantis with Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces didn't go as planned as the social media site crashed repeatedly, disrupting the plan for the announcement. About 678,000 people tuned in to listen as Twitter suffered repeated crashes, and Musk attributed the problems to the number of listeners. The Spaces session eventually resumed, reaching about 304,000 listeners. David Sacks, a venture capitalist and close friend of Musk, attempted to start the event on Wednesday. He said, "We've got so many people here that I think we are kind of melting the servers, which is a good sign." I’m running for president to lead our Great American Comeback. pic.twitter.com/YmkWkLaVDg — Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) May 24, 2023 × DeSantis’ campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin said on Twitter that the enthusiasm for DeSantis had “literally busted up the internet” and shared that the campaign raised $1 million within an hour. The Twitter broadcast of the hour-long interview lost sound for extended stretches and thousands of users were either dropped or were unable to join. Twitter owner Elon Musk, who was hosting the conversation, blamed the glitches on servers not having sufficient bandwidth for the huge number of people who were trying to tune in. After launching a second Spaces from the Twitter account of entrepreneur David Sacks, Musk apologised and said, “I think we’re definitely breaking new ground here. As far as I know, no major presidential candidate has ever announced candidacy on social media this way. So thank you for doing that.” DeSantis will take on Trump for the Republican nomination. However, it might face challenges in the near future as he trails the former president in recent polls. A day before the formal statement, Musk said that they will be interviewing DeSantis as he has "quite an announcement to make" and it will be the very first time that something like this is happening on social media. Musk said he won't endorse any particular candidate at this time, but he is "interested in X/Twitter being somewhat of a public town square". The Twitter CEO also noted that the real-time questions and answers will not be "scripted". Who is Ro DeSantis? DeSantis has an aggressive style of cultural conservatism and has created a national presence. The 44-year-old is quite a newcomer to US politics, having been elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 2012. In 2018, he was elected governor of Florida. He defeated Democratic candidate Charlie Crist last November by over 20 percentage points with 98 per cent of the projected vote counted. He has enraged Donald Trump, who dubbed him "Ron De-Sanctimonious". President Joe Biden referred to DeSantis as "Donald Trump incarnate" in his harshest remarks yet against the governor. Never Back Down, a pro-DeSantis political organisation, released a video to commemorate the announcement of the governor's November 2022 election victory speech, in which he declares that "Florida is where woke goes to die." "We chose facts over fear. We chose education over indoctrination. We weathered the storm," he says. "We fight the woke in the schools. We fight the woke in the corporations, we will never ever surrender to the woke mob. We will be courageous and we will never back down." Donald Trump targeted DeSantis for the glitchy launch on twitter and wrote on Truth Social: “Wow! The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER! His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!” he wrote on his social media site. Other declared Republican candidates include Nikki Haley, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Tim Scott, a U.S. senator from South Carolina. Twitter stutters as Republican Ron DeSantis announces bid to enter 2024 presidential race

Officials in the United States believe that Ukraine was likely behind the failed drone attack on the Kremlin earlier this month, The New York Times reported on Wednesday (May 24).&nbsp;

The officials said Ukraine is also possibly behind a number of other killings and incursions on Russian territory. The report, however, cited intelligence officials as saying that they do not know which unit exactly was behind the drone attack.&nbsp;

It is also unclear if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky knew about the attack beforehand.&nbsp;

Though the failed drone attack did not cause any damage, but it eroded the impression of invincibility of Kremlin.

The report said that the US has based its estimation on intercepted conversations within both Ukraine and Russia. However, it&nbsp;said that it has low confidence in that estimate because it has yet to determine which precise unit was behind the strike.&nbsp;

American intelligence agencies are not sure who exactly carried out the attack, but insinuate that it was part of a series of covert operations plotted and conducted by Ukraine’s security services.

<h2>Kremlin drone attack&nbsp;</h2>

On May 3, two drones attacked the Kremlin in Moscow, but they caused little damage before being destroyed by Russia.&nbsp;

Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russia’s law enforcement agencies, had posted a video of a flying object approaching the dome of the Kremlin Senate building and exploding with an intense burst of light just before it was about to hit.&nbsp;

Social media videos showed two objects flying in the same direction towards the dome, with the clock on the Kremlin’s Spassky Tower reading 2:27 and 2:43. The first appeared to be destroyed with only a cloud of smoke, but the second appeared to leave a blazing ruin on the dome.&nbsp;

The attack made officials in the United States — Kyiv’s biggest military supplier — uncomfortable since the Government weighs the risk of Russia blaming U.S. and retaliating by expanding the war beyond Ukraine.

Russia has consistently blamed Ukraine for the drone attack, and&nbsp;also accused the U.S. of playing a role, and alleged that it was an attempt to kill President Vladimir Putin,&nbsp;but both Kyiv and Washington have&nbsp;vehemently denied their&nbsp;involvement.&nbsp;

Zelensky denied any Ukrainian involvement and said at a press conference in Helsinki, "We don't attack Putin, or Moscow, we fight on our territory."&nbsp;

After the attack, Russia reserved the right to retaliate, Putin's office said, and Russian hardliners demanded swift retribution against Zelensky himself.&nbsp;

The presidency said in a statement: "Two uncrewed aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin. As a result of timely actions taken by the military and special services with the use of radar warfare systems, the devices were put out of action."&nbsp;

"We regard these actions as a planned terrorist act and an attempt on the president's life, carried out on the eve of Victory Day, the May 9 Parade, at which the presence of foreign guests is also planned."&nbsp;

"The Russian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit."&nbsp;

US officials do not believe it was an attempt to assassinate Putin as he is not known to spending a lot of time at the Kremlin.

The drones that targeted the Kremlin were small with a light payload and it is unclear whether they would have had sufficient range to be flown from Ukraine to Moscow.

Besides, US officials have not ruled out the possibility of non-state Ukrainian or Russian actors inside Russia, including Russians sympathetic to Putin hoping to shore up support for him, carrying out the attack.

US officials say inputs indicate Ukrainian role behind failed drone attack on Kremlin

Striker Lautaro Martinez scored twice as Inter Milan fought back to beat Fiorentina 2-1 and win their secured consecutive Coppa Italia title at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

With both teams preparing for major European finals next month and meeting for the first time in a major domestic final, Inter made nine changes from Sunday's defeat by Napoli, starting in-form striker Romelu Lukaku on the bench and Samir Handanovic replacing Andre Onana in goal.

Fiorentina took the lead after three minutes when Jonathan Ikone sent in a cross that found Nico Gonzales unmarked at the back post, and he drilled the ball into the net.

Edin Dzeko had a clear chance to equalise halfway through the half, but he could not keep the ball down when keeper Pietro Terracciano came rushing out and sent his shot over the crossbar.

"We started badly and had the wrong approach, which is rare for us, but the lads did well to stay in the game anyway and then turn it around," Inter manager Simone Inzaghi told Mediaset.

"I am happy, because we won a&nbsp;cup&nbsp;that we wanted, to confirm what we did last season. Fiorentina are a quality team who caused us a lot of problems."

Inter have had a successful season, retaining the Coppa Italia and&nbsp;Italian&nbsp;Supercup&nbsp;titles and reaching next month's Champions League final against Manchester City.

"We have the final two Serie A games, then Istanbul and a great season we want to keep going," Inzaghi added.

Argentine Martinez did level with a shot from a tight angle in the 29th minute and followed up with a close-range volley high into the net eight minutes later.

"In all honesty, I am moved, because for a few years, we have been bringing trophies to this great club, and we must continue like this. I am very happy," Martinez said.

"I am very happy to bring this trophy back to Milan, or rather keep it there, seeing as that’s where it was last year."

Fiorentina rarely threatened to get back into the match and Terracciano showcased his goalkeeping skills by making a remarkable double save to deny Lukaku's powerful strike and Federico Dimarco's follow-up.

Fiorentina's best chance to equalise came when Luka Jovic's strike was saved by Handanovic but Inter held out comfortably before celebrating their ninth Coppa Italia title.

Fiorentina face West Ham United in the Conference League final on June 7 and Inter play City in the Champions League final on June 10.

Jacob Morrill, a 24-year-old tenant from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, facing eviction from his rental home has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed his landlord with an axe blow to the head on the day of a scheduled court hearing.&nbsp;

Morrill was arrested Monday. The police said that he even told investigators where they could find the body, wrapped in a tarp, stashed in the woods.&nbsp;

US-based media reports mentioned that Morrill appeared before a judge Tuesday and was arraigned on a charge of first-degree murder.&nbsp;

As quoted, Police Chief Brian Peters said during a press briefing on Tuesday: "We haven't had an incident like this for a few years now, so it definitely is a shock to see that here in Portsmouth."&nbsp;

Local media outlets reported citing local police that the 50-year-old Xue Feng Wu had left his home in Tiverton early Monday to check on his property in the 1700 block of West Road that Morrill had been renting.&nbsp;

Officers arrived at the area at 4:32 pm (local time), after Wu had not been seen or heard from in several hours, and found Morrill.&nbsp;

Morrill said that the landlord was at the property earlier in the day and Wu had gone to court in Providence.&nbsp;

Wu was meant to appear in court that morning to evict Morrill, but it wasn't until after 6 pm (local time) on Monday that police arrested him.&nbsp;

Morrill was detained and allegedly revealed the location of the victim’s body.

Police said that the victim's body was found in the "rear wooded area" of the rental property "wrapped in a tarp and held down in place by a section of wire fencing and other objects in an area of brush off the pathway."&nbsp;

The police said that Morrill and Wu allegedly had a fight inside a garage at the rental property, during which the suspect allegedly grabbed&nbsp;a "small handheld axe" and hit Wu in the head, killing him.&nbsp;

While speaking to reporters, Portsmouth Police Chief Brian Peters said that "it definitely is a shock to see that here in Portsmouth.” He said there had not been an incident like it for “a few years now".&nbsp;

In the press release, cops said: "The Portsmouth Police Department extends our sincere condolences to Mr. Wu’s family for their tragic loss."&nbsp;

US man facing eviction ‘kills’ landlord with axe, stashes body in nearby woods

Tipu Sultan's bedchamber sword was sold&nbsp;for a whopping&nbsp;$17.4 million&nbsp;at Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art sale in London on Tuesday (May 23).&nbsp;

Tipu Sultan was the Indian Muslim ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India between 1782 and 1799. He was commonly referred to as the "Tiger of Mysore" and was famous for the commanding role he played in wars.&nbsp;

The official site of the auction mentioned that a number of weapons were removed from Tipu Sultan's palace after the loss of his royal bastion at Seringapatam on May 4 in 1799. The bedchamber sword was discovered in his private chambers after the war.&nbsp;

Tipu Sultan was killed in the battle against the East Indian Company and the sword was reportedly "looted". According to Bonhams, the sword was presented to British Army officer, Major General David Baird, "as a token of their high esteem of his courage and conduct in the assault with he commanded and in which Tipu Sultan was slain".&nbsp;

The sword is said to be the finest and most important of the weapons in his arsenal with a proven personal association with the ruler.&nbsp;

The site also mentioned that the blade, emblazoned 'The Sword of the Ruler,' is exquisite. Mughal swordsmiths created it after seeing German blades transported to India in the 16th century.&nbsp;

The hilt is inlaid with superbly wrought gold lettering depicting five of God's characteristics and two invocations to God by name.&nbsp;

<h2>'The sword has an extraordinary history'&nbsp;</h2>

Nima Sagharchi, group head of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams, said in the statement: "The sword has an extraordinary history, an astonishing provenance and unrivalled craftsmanship. It was no surprise it was so hotly contested between two phone bidders and a bidder in the room. We are delighted with the result."&nbsp;

Bruno Vinciguerra, who is the CEO of Bonhams, said: "This is one of the most astonishing objects Bonhams has had the privilege of bringing to auction. It is a stupendous price for a stupendous piece. I am so thrilled for our teams that worked so hard to deliver this result."&nbsp;

While speaking before the sale, Oliver White, Bonhams Head of Islamic and Indian Art and auctioneer, said: "This spectacular sword is the greatest of all the weapons linked to Tipu Sultan still in private hands."&nbsp;

"Its close personal association with the Sultan, its impeccable provenance traceable to the very day it was captured, and the outstanding craftsmanship that went into its manufacture make it unique and highly desirable."&nbsp;

Tipu Sultan’s iconic sword sold for a whopping $17.4 million at London auction

Alex Murdaugh on Wednesday (May 24) was indicted on financial fraud charges related to the housekeeper's death. A federal court in the United States charged the former South Carolina lawyer with 22 counts of financial fraud.&nbsp;

According to the US Attorney's Office in South Carolina, the 54-year-old Murdaugh apparently conspired with another personal injury lawyer — Cory Fleming — to siphon settlement funds in the death of the housekeeper Gloria Satterfield.&nbsp;

The longtime housekeeper died in 2018 following what had been described as a "trip and fall accident" at the family home.&nbsp;

The prosecutors said that Murdaugh directed Fleming to draw checks totalling nearly $3.5 million to a bank account that he utilised for his profit, while Satterfield's estate received none of the settlement cash.

Fleming, 54, is set to plead guilty on Thursday on a charge of conspiracy to conduct wire fraud in connection with the Satterfield case, according to federal authorities.&nbsp;

As quoted by NBC News, US Attorney Adair Boroughs said in a statement: "Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers."&nbsp;

The statement added: "South Carolinians turn to lawyers when they are at their most vulnerable, and in our state, those who abuse the public's trust and enrich themselves by fraud, theft, and self-dealing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Murdaugh's lawyers revealed part of a lawsuit that accused him of life insurance fraud in Satterfield's death.&nbsp;

The suit stated that he "invented the critical facts" surrounding her original trip and fall accident in order to earn millions of dollars in the settlement.&nbsp;

Nautilus Insurance Co. had filed a suit alleging it was defrauded and the attorney for Satterfield's children said that Murdaugh never told the family about the settlement money.&nbsp;

A jury only needed a few hours to convict him despite the lack of specific evidence, such as a murder weapon or DNA proving he shot his son Paul and wife Maggie on June 7, 2021.&nbsp;

The court condemned Murdaugh to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole one day following the jury's decision.&nbsp;

Alex Murdaugh on Wednesday (May 24) was indicted on financial fraud charges related to the housekeeper's death. A federal court in the United States charged the former South Carolina lawyer with 22 counts of financial fraud. According to the US Attorney's Office in South Carolina, the 54-year-old Murdaugh apparently conspired with another personal injury lawyer — Cory Fleming — to siphon settlement funds in the death of the housekeeper Gloria Satterfield. The longtime housekeeper died in 2018 following what had been described as a "trip and fall accident" at the family home. The prosecutors said that Murdaugh directed Fleming to draw checks totalling nearly $3.5 million to a bank account that he utilised for his profit, while Satterfield's estate received none of the settlement cash. Fleming, 54, is set to plead guilty on Thursday on a charge of conspiracy to conduct wire fraud in connection with the Satterfield case, according to federal authorities. As quoted by NBC News, US Attorney Adair Boroughs said in a statement: "Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers." The statement added: "South Carolinians turn to lawyers when they are at their most vulnerable, and in our state, those who abuse the public's trust and enrich themselves by fraud, theft, and self-dealing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Earlier this month, Murdaugh's lawyers revealed part of a lawsuit that accused him of life insurance fraud in Satterfield's death. The suit stated that he "invented the critical facts" surrounding her original trip and fall accident in order to earn millions of dollars in the settlement. Nautilus Insurance Co. had filed a suit alleging it was defrauded and the attorney for Satterfield's children said that Murdaugh never told the family about the settlement money. Today has been a great day for justice in South Carolina related to the ongoing criminal investigations into Alex Murdaugh and Cory Fleming. Boris Johnson, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, has been referred to police by the Cabinet Office, media reports on Tuesday said. The officials reportedly have claimed that Johnson broke coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown rules by hosting family and friends at Chequers.&nbsp;

A government ministry handed two police forces material about alleged Covid lockdown breaches.&nbsp;

The Cabinet Office looks after the operation of government and it said that it had made a referral to police based on information discovered while preparing submissions for a public inquiry into the pandemic.

This development means Johnson is facing further potential police investigations into the "Partygate" scandal.&nbsp;

The Metropolitan Police in London said that it was "assessing" fresh material received in the last week regarding "potential breaches" of Covid guidelines in Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021.&nbsp;

The news was first published by The Times, which stated that the Thames Valley Police were&nbsp;also analysing new evidence related to possible rule-breaking at Chequers, which is the prime minister's country estate outside London.&nbsp;

Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov and translator Angela Rodel were named Tuesday winners of the International&nbsp;Booker&nbsp;Prize with the novel "Time Shelter" -- a first for a book in Bulgarian.

The prestigious award recognises works of fiction from around the world that have been translated into English and the £50,000 ($62,000) prize is split equally between the author and the translator.

The winning novel focuses on a "clinic for the past" that offers experimental Alzheimer's treatment.&nbsp;

It recreates the atmosphere of past decades down to the smallest detail to trigger patients' memories.&nbsp;But with time healthy people start coming to the clinic, seeking an escape from the horrors of modern life.

"It is a novel that invites reflection and vigilance as much as it moves us, because the language -- sensitive and precise -- manages to capture, in a Proustian vein, the extreme fragility of the past," Franco-Moroccan writer and judges panel chair Leila Slimani said.

Born in 1968, novelist and poet Gospodinov is the most internationally acclaimed modern Bulgarian author. His works are translated into 25 languages.&nbsp;

Speaking about the book's nomination, Gospodinov said, "This encourages writers not only from my country, but also from the Balkans, who often feel themselves outside the sphere of English-speaking attention."

Rodel is originally from the US state of Minnesota but lives and works in Bulgaria. Her poetry and prose translations have been published across literary magazines and anthologies.

In 2014, she was granted Bulgarian citizenship for her work and contribution to Bulgarian culture.

"We need not only to recognise the translators, but also put them on an equal footing with the authors," Rodel told journalists.&nbsp;

"It was really trying to decide with Georgi how we were going to not just translate the text but translate the atmosphere, the context... all of those socialist sort of ghosts that were haunting the text itself."

Gospodinov agreed that "It was not easy at all to translate this kind of book, because the book is dealing with different decades in the 20th century and with different languages that we have in this decade."

Last year the International&nbsp;Booker&nbsp;Prize was awarded to the Hindi novel "Tomb of Sand" by Indian author Geetanjali Shree, and translated by Daisy Rockwell.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr's red card in Sunday's La Liga match at Valencia, in which he was also racially abused, has been rescinded, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said on Tuesday.

The Brazilian winger was sent off in stoppage time by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea for striking an opponent following a scuffle with Valencia players in which Vinicius appeared to be grabbed around the neck.

Vinicius had earlier been racially abused by fans at the Mestalla Stadium, which led to the game being halted for 10 minutes as the player pointed out people who were abusing him in the stands.

"The RFEF Competition Committee considers that the referee's assessment was determined by the omission of the entirety of the play that took place, which affected the refereeing decision," the federation said.

"The fact that he (the referee) was deprived of a decisive part of the facts led him to adopt an arbitrary decision. And this is because it was impossible for him to properly assess what happened."

Seven people accused of different hate crimes against Vinicius were detained by the Spanish police earlier on Tuesday.

The RFEF also announced that it had fined the club 45,000 euros ($49,536) and that the south stand of the Valencia stadium will be partially closed for five matches.

Russia claimed on Tuesday (May 23) that it had scrambled a Su-27 fighter jet to "prevent violations of the state border" by two US Air Force strategic bombers flying over the Baltic Sea.&nbsp;

The Russian defence ministry said, "After removing the foreign military aircraft from the Russian state border, the Russian fighter went back to its air base."&nbsp;

The defence ministry claimed that the two aircraft were B-1 strategic bombers belonging to the US Air Force. According to the statement, the army prevented the violation of the border.&nbsp;

The ministry added, "The flight of the Russian fighter was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace."&nbsp;

Similar incidents have happened in the past as well and in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war, they become detrimental.&nbsp;

A major incident happen when an American drone crashed after colliding with a Russian jet over the Black Sea in March.&nbsp;

The US military said that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet downed an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, and called it a "reckless" incident.&nbsp;

A video was released by the Pentagon, which showed the Russian military jet coming very close to a US military drone and dumping fuel near it. The US said that the Russian aircraft damaged the propeller during the intercept.&nbsp;

The Pentagon said that the de-classified video, which is about 40 seconds long, has been edited by the US military for length but shows events in sequential order.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Russia has denied the accusations levelled by the US that its jets acted recklessly. Moscow said that the drone crashed after making "sharp manoeuvres," having "provocatively" flown close to Russian air space near Crimea.&nbsp;

A ministry statement had said that Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told his US counterpart that the American drone flights near Crimea's coast "were provocative in nature" and could lead to "an escalation in the Black Sea zone."&nbsp;

After the incident, General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, had said: "There is a pattern of behaviour recently where there is a little bit more aggressive actions being conducted by the Russians."&nbsp;
