President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (June 7) called the attack on the Russian-occupied Kakhovka dam a "barbaric act", in his first public reaction to the situation. Moscow has already blamed Ukraine for the "catastrophic" attack.

The hydroelectric dam was ripped open early Tuesday after a reported blast and in the aftermath, Moscow and Kyiv have traded blame for the attack.

The Kremlin said in a statement that Putin told Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call that the breach was "a barbaric act which has led to a large-scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophe".

During the call, the Russian president also congratulated his Turkish counterpart on officially assuming office, Kremlin said, further adding that Putin and Erdogan have agreed to maintain regular communication. The statement mentioned: "It has been agreed to maintain regular personal dialogue."

Erdogan's office reported that on Wednesday, the Turkish president also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and proposed to create an international commission to probe the destruction of a major dam in southern Ukraine.

"President Erdogan said that a commission could be established with the participation of experts from the warring parties, the United Nations and the international community, including Turkey, for a detailed investigation into the explosion at Kakhovka dam," his office said after the call with Zelensky.

Massive destruction

The alleged attack triggered geopolitical tensions as the Kakhovka dam sits on the Dnipro River, which feeds a reservoir providing cooling water for the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, some 150 kilometres upstream.

Thousands of civilians were forced to flee the flooded areas while raising fears of an ecological disaster after the destruction of the dam caused torrents of water to pour into the Dnipro.

Zelensky said the dam's collapse had left hundreds of thousands of people without normal access to drinking water. Ukraine's agriculture ministry said that the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station will lead the fields in the south of Ukraine to "turn into deserts next year".

In a statement issued late on Tuesday, the ministry said that the disaster would cut off the water supply to 31 irrigation systems in the Ukrainian regions of Dnipro, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

It added that in 2021 these systems provided irrigation on 584,000 hectares from which farmers harvested about four million tonnes of grains and oilseeds. It further mentioned that the dam's destruction has left 94 per cent of irrigation systems in Kherson, 74 per cent of those in Zaporizhzhia and 30 per cent of those in Dnipro regions without water.

At least six people were killed and several were injured on Wednesday (June 7) in a freak train mishap in Odisha — just days after the same state in east India witnessed a major three-train accident that killed nearly 300 people and injured many more.

The victims were reportedly run over by a goods train at Jajpur Road Railway station at the time when they were taking shelter under a wagon due to the heavy downpour.

Local reports mentioned that bogies of the goods trains rolled down abruptly.

The wagons were not attached to the engine and they were parked on the safety track. More details are awaited.

While responding to the incident, East Coast Railway CPRO Biswajit Sahu said, "Few labourers, who were carrying out railway upkeep work had taken shelter under a wagon due to the downpour."

"Due to gusty winds, the wagon rolled which led to four deaths and few injuries," Sahu added.

India: At least six killed after freak train accident in Odisha

Mike Pence, the former vice president of the United States, on Wednesday (June 7) officially announced his entry into the 2024 presidential election campaign. With his announcement, Pence joined an already-crowded field that includes his one-time boss Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former US envoy to UN Nikki Haley, and others.

Pence's announcement comes two days after papers filed with the US Federal Election Commission showed he had formally entered the race. In his online campaign, he said: "Today, before God and my family, I'm announcing I'm running for president of the United States."

The 64-year-old Republican will appear at a campaign launch event later in the day in the early-voting state of Iowa, followed by a CNN town hall event Wednesday evening

In a tweet accompanying the video, he wrote: "I believe in the American people, and I have faith God is not done with America yet." He added, "Together, we can bring this Country back, and the best days for the Greatest Nation on Earth are yet to come!"

In his video, Pence cited inflation, immigration and recession risk. He also said, over images of the leaders of Russia and China, that "the enemies of freedom are on the march around the world".

What to expect next?

The road ahead for Pence is not going to be easy as a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll in May noted that Pence enters the Republican presidential primary with a mountain to climb, polling at just five per cent and trailing Trump by 44 points.

For a vice president to run against a president he served under is quite rare as it has happened just a few times in history. He was a loyal deputy of Trump while serving as the vice president from 2017 to 2021. Pence also brought the religious right into the tent and was willing to defend the president against any accusation. Pence repeatedly defended him through multiple scandals during tumultuous four years in the White House.

However, the narratives changed when Pence rejected Trump's demands that he overturn the 2020 election in his role as president of the Senate. After the US Capitol attack, Pence continued to praise his assailant in public, but it eventually changed as Trump's torrent of false claims of election fraud led to a mob chanting for Pence to be hanged at the US Capitol.

Pence even called out Trump for endangering his family and other people at the US Capitol, and also emphasised his differences with Trump on issues ranging from the handling of Russian leader Vladimir Putin to abortion rights.

Former VP Mike Pence officially announces 2024 US presidential run

US Geological Survey (USGS) said on Wednesday (June 7) that the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted in the morning. Alert has been raised but the agency said that the lava flows are currently confined to the surrounding crater floor. The observatory said that the alert level for Kilauea was raised to red for "warning".

The USGS also mentioned that the volcano last erupted in January, and the activity stretched into March. A new eruption was detected when the organisation's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) noticed a glow in Kilauea summit webcam images on Wednesday at 4:44 am (local time) (14:44 GMT).

“At approximately 4:44 am HST on June 7, 2023, the (US Geological Survey's) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected glow in Kīlauea summit webcam images indicating that an eruption has commenced within Halemaʻumaʻu crater in Kīlauea’s summit caldera, within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park," the observatory said in a statement.

The USGS issued an advisory, stating that "the opening phases of eruptions are dynamic".

"The activity is confined to Halema'uma'u (crater) and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses."

A report by NDTV mentioned that on Sunday (June 4) the vehicle was set ablaze with three people inside, including the minor. The incident took place in the Iroisemba area of Imphal West which is under the jurisdiction of the Lamphel police station.

The report mentioned that those who lost their lives have been identified as eight-year-old Tonsing Hangsing, his mother Meena Hangsing, and a relative who was also with them, identified as Lydia Lourembam.

Hangsing, who is reportedly the son of a tribal man and a Meitei mother, received life-threatening wounds when he sustained a bullet wound in his head during a shoot-out. The report cited police and army sources as saying that he was being taken to the hospital.

A senior Assam Rifles officer confirmed the incident. The official also noted that security has been beefed up in and around the camp where the tragic incident took place.

The report further stated that a gunfight started in the area on June 4 evening and he was hit by a bullet despite the fact that he was in the camp. They were staying at an Assam Rifles relief camp at Kangchup.

As quoted by India TV, sources said: "A senior Assam Rifles officer immediately spoke to police in Imphal and arranged for an ambulance. Since the mother was from the majority community, a decision was taken to take the kid to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal by road."

Divulging details about the incident, one of the sources added that the ambulance was under Assam Rifles escort for a few kilometres, but after that, the local police took over. The report mentioned that at around 6:30 pm (local time), the ambulance was "waylaid by civilians" at Isoisemba and set ablaze. The report mentioned that all three in the vehicle were killed and they still do not know where the bodies are.

For the unversed, the Kangchup area has several Kuki villages and the region is witnessing heavy exchange of fire in the second wave of violence. Violent clashes broke out in the northeastern state of India after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts on May 3 aimed at protesting the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Nearly 100 people have lost their lives and over 300 have been injured so far.

Manipur: Minor boy and two women, including his mother, charred to death in ambulance

The European Commission on Wednesday (June 7) launched a legal action against Poland over its creation of a controversial body investigating "Russian influence". The move is widely seen as targeting the opposition.

In a letter, which will be sent on Thursday, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission's executive vice-president, said: "The College (of Commissioners) agreed to start an infringement procedure by sending a letter of formal notice in relation to the new law on the state committee for examination of Russian influence."

Dombrovskis also said that the commission had "agreed to start an infringement procedure by sending a letter of formal notice" to Warsaw, a neighbour and staunch ally of Ukraine, which is battling Russia's invasion.

This comes after Poland created a committee aimed at probing citizens who may have succumbed to Russian influence. Last week, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that he would propose amending the law on the panel after criticism from the EU's executive and the United States.

The Polish government, which is led by the hard-right Law and Justice party (PiS), claimed that the committee is necessary to strengthen the country's "cohesion and internal security" in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

A government spokesperson told Euronews last week that "the scale of Russian influence on the functioning of the Republic of Poland is still not fully explored". The spokesperson insisted that the committee "shall not have the power to deprive anyone of their public rights".

Reports have mentioned that the law would enable the authorities to impose a ban of 10 years from public positions, relating to public finances and classified information, on those who are found guilty.

However, the critics argued that the move would be used to target opposition leader Donald Tusk as the governing conservatives introduced it just months before parliamentary elections.

The opposition party raised concerns over its suspected aim and has even gone so far as to dub it the "Lex Tusk", or Tusk Law.

The European Union said on Tuesday that it had "special concern" over the committee while the United States said the legislation "could be used to block the candidacy of opposition politicians without due process".

As quoted by Euronews, Iustitia, one of the main judges' associations in Poland, said that the law "grossly violates the constitutional principles of a democratic state of law, the tripartite separation of powers and independence of the judiciary, and the presumption of innocence. It is anti-democratic and anti-EU".

"The transfer of the competence to determine the responsibility from an independent court to a quasi-administrative political body, equipped with oppressive repressive measures, is another step towards an authoritarian state," it added.

Indian hospital AIIMS says malware attack 'thwarted' by cybersecurity systems

At least four people were killed when a light aircraft with an unresponsive pilot crashed into the mountains of Virginia on Sunday (June 4). The authorities in the United States were forced to scramble F-16 fighter jets after a sonic boom that rocked the Washington DC metropolitan area. The sonic boom startled residents and rattled windows and walls for miles.

In the report, CNN mentioned that the first responders who arrived at the crash site said that the plane left a "crater". Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of them said that it looked like the plane impacted the ground at a very steep angle.

The first responders said that there were four recognisable pieces of wreckage from the plane. As quoted, one said, "There was nothing really bigger than your arm." They also said that they found signs of human remains.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which was investigating the incident, said that the Cessna Citation slammed into the mountainous terrain Sunday afternoon some 275 kilometres southwest of the capital.

In a statement sent to news agency AFP, Virginia State Police said that first responders reached the site near the town of Staunton by foot some four hours after the crash. The state police said that "no survivors were located" and the search efforts were suspended.

The AFP report quoted an official as saying that President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident. Biden was at the White House and also played golf on Sunday. The official didn't mention whether or not any emergency precautions were implemented.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement that the US military attempted to contact the pilot who was unresponsive until the Cessna crashed near the George Washington National Forest.

As reported by Reuters, a source familiar with the matter said that the Cessna appeared to be flying on autopilot.

The statement said, "The NORAD aircraft were authorised to travel at supersonic speeds and a sonic boom may have been heard by residents of the region." It added that NORAD aircraft also used flares in an attempt to the pilot's attention.

What exactly happened?

The FAA said that the civilian plane took off from Elizabethton, Tennessee bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York. However, the flight tracking website Flightradar24 indicated it turned around after flying over Long Island. It was headed back south over Washington and into Virginia.

In a statement, the FAA said, "There were four people on board. The FAA and NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) will investigate." A preliminary accident report was expected later Monday.

As per public records, the aircraft was registered to Florida-based company Encore Motors of Melbourne. The owner of the company, John Rumpel, told The Washington Post that his "entire family" was on board, including his daughter, a grandchild and her nanny.

US: 4 dead in unresponsive Cessna Citation plane crash that leaves a 'crater'

Mike Pence, the former vice president of the United States, on Monday (June 5) launched his hotly-anticipated bid to run for president — a challenge for his one-time boss Donald Trump.

The papers filed with the Federal Election Commission showed that Pence has officially joined the candidates who are contesting to be the 2024 presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

The 63-year-old is scheduled to kick off his presidential campaign officially with a video and announcement in the early-voting state of Iowa.

US-based media outlets reported that Pence is expected to publicly launch his campaign with a June 7 rally in Des Moines.

The report mentioned that the former vice president is also expected to hold several additional events in Iowa following his campaign announcement, which may also include a CNN town hall in the evening.

Pence made regular visits to a couple of key early-voting states — Iowa and New Hampshire, which according to media reports, is a process of the groundwork for a presidential campaign.

As quoted by USA TODAY, Democratic leaders, including Jaime Harrison, criticised Pence's entry. As quoted, Harrison, who is Democratic National Committee Chair, said in a statement that "Pence's entrance will no doubt drag an increasingly MAGA 2024 GOP field even further to the extremes".

Harrison said, "In Mike Pence's own words, he was a member of the extreme Tea Party 'before it was cool,' and he hasn't slowed down since. Now, he's promising to take the Trump-Pence agenda even further, leading the charge for a national abortion ban, cutting Medicare, and ending Social Security as we know it."

From 2017 to 2021, Pence was a loyal deputy of Trump while serving as the vice president. He brought the religious right into the tent and was willing to defend the president against any accusation.

Republican White House race

Some polls have shown Trump leading the Republican race, which has other names, including Florida Gov Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, and more. But reports have noted that Pence has aimed to distinguish himself from his rivals on issues such as support for Ukraine, and other issues of global concern.

But reports have noted that Pence has aimed to distinguish himself from his rivals on issues such as support for Ukraine, and other issues of global concern. Former US vice president Mike Pence files papers to enter 2024 White House race

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday (June 5) that America won't let Iran get nuclear weapons, reiterating the Biden administration's firm stance against Tehran.

Blinken showed commitment to Israel's security in a speech to the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC, where he said that there was no danger that Israel faces "that is graver than the one posed by the Iranian regime".

In a speech to the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, Blinken said that the US continues to believe that diplomacy is the best way to "verifiably, effectively and sustainably" prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. But he added that economic pressure and deterrence reinforce the diplomacy in parallel.

He added, "If Iran rejects the path of diplomacy, then, as President Biden has repeatedly made clear, all options are on the table to ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons."

Blinken also pledged continued US commitment to both Israel's security and a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. He, however, warned the expansion of Jewish settlements would be an obstacle to peace.

He said that the administration of President Joe Biden was committed to the Abraham Accords, which is an initiative launched under former president Donald Trump to persuade Arab countries to establish formal relations with the Jewish state.

Without specifying the holy sites in his reference, he said in his speech that moves toward annexation of the Israeli-occupied West Bank or that disrupting the status quo at holy sites would hurt the prospects for a two-state solution.

Blinken said, "Settlement expansion clearly presents an obstacle to the horizon of hope that we seek. Likewise, any move toward annexation of the West Bank, de facto or de jure, disruption of the historic status quo at holy sites, the continuing demolitions of homes and the evictions of families that have lived in those homes for generations damage prospects for two states. They also undermine the basic daily dignity to which all people are entitled."

Blinken urges for normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia

News agency Reuters reported that there was a muted response from the audience when he spoke about the settlement expansion, but he received widespread applause when he outlined the longstanding American commitment to Israel and said all options were on the table when it came to preventing Israel's No. 1 enemy, Iran, from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Blinken said that Washington would continue to work toward helping Israel integrate into the region as a means of enhancing security, stability and prosperity in the Middle East. He also stressed the importance of normalisation of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

He said, "The United States has a real national security interest in promoting normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia."

US won't allow Iran get nuclear weapons, says Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao were sued by the regulators in the United States on Monday (June 5) for allegedly operating a "web of deception" and "calculated evasion of the law".

The allegations piled further pressure on the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange and sent bitcoin to its lowest in almost three months.

News agencies reported that Binance allegedly permitted US residents to trade, even though the platform is not registered in the nation as a securities exchange. The case also alleges Binance misused customer funds.

A civil complaint listing 13 charges involving platforms and other investment entities controlled by founder Changpeng Zhao was filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The SEC case is being followed closely after the charges in March by another US regulator, the Commodities Futures and Exchange Commission.

The allegations d levelled by SEC also claimed that Binance and Zhao secretly controlled customers' assets, allowing them to commingle and divert investor funds "as they please".

Billionaire Zhao is the founder of Binance and also one of the crypto industry's highest-profile moguls. He was once seen as the archrival of disgraced crypto tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried.

The complaint noted that Zhao maintained that Binance.US was independent of Binance, but was "secretly controlled" by Binance "behind the scenes".

The SEC said that the agency also alleged that Zhao and Binance "commingled" customer assets, including to another Zhao-controlled entity, Signa Chain, which "engaged in manipulative trading that artificially inflated the platform's trading volume".

SEC Chair Gary Gensler said, "Through thirteen charges, we allege that Zhao and Binance entities engaged in an extensive web of deception, conflicts of interest, lack of disclosure, and calculated evasion of the law."

"Zhao and Binance misled investors about their risk controls and corrupted trading volumes while actively concealing who was operating the platform, the manipulative trading of its affiliated market maker, and even where and with whom investor funds and crypto assets were custodied."

Zhao reacts to the allegations

Zhao said on Twitter that the Binance "team is all standing by, ensuring systems are stable, including withdrawals, and deposits".

He added, "We will issue a response once we see the complaint. Haven't seen it yet. Media gets the info before we do."
