The Pentagon declined to comment after reports emerged on Thursday (June 8) that China is planning to build a secret surveillance base just off US shores in Cuba.

The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials familiar with classified intelligence, that the base would allow Chinese authorities to eavesdrop on electronic communications across the southeastern United States. The region includes the US Southern and Central Command headquarters, both in Florida.

The report cited unnamed US officials as saying that China will pay Cuba "several billion dollars" to be able to construct the facility.

If it happens, a base in Cuba would emerge as a massive challenge for the US as it would be just 150 kilometres off the south coast of Florida. It would be the most direct challenge yet to the continental United States.

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement: "I cannot speak to this specific report, but we are well aware of – and have spoken many times too – (about) the People’s Republic of China's efforts to invest in infrastructure around the world that may have military purposes, including in this hemisphere."

"We monitor it closely, take steps to counter it, and remain confident that we are able to meet all our security commitments at home, in the region, and around the world," he said.

Strained US-China ties

This development comes amid strained US-China relations over a range of issues, including America's support for self-ruled Taiwan, which China says it is determined to reunite with the mainland.

The ties further weakened with the recent unfolding of the spy balloon saga. Earlier this year in February, a suspected Chinese spy balloon was spotted in the US airspace, and later was shot down by fighter jets. The US also shot down "unidentified objects" at two other different locations afterwards.

The US claimed that it was capable of gathering intelligence and is believed to have transmitted it back to Beijing in near-real time, an allegation denied by Beijing.

As quoted by the report, a US Defense Department official on grounds of anonymity said, "We are not going to comment on those specific reports."

"On a broader level, we are very aware of the PRC's attempts to invest in infrastructure around the world that may have military purposes, including in the western hemisphere," the official said.

"We will continue to monitor it closely, and remain confident that we are able to meet all our security commitments at home and across the region," the official added.

In recent times, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has pushed a rapid expansion of the country's security presence around the world, aiming to match the broad presence of the US military on all continents.

China to establish 'spy base' in Cuba off southeastern United States: Report

India's educational technology giant Byju's is expected to be laying off more employees, The Morning Context reported this on Wednesday citing an internal communication seen by it. The company hasn't denied or confirmed the report so far.

The report mentioned that the ed-tech company intends to lay off around 1,000 employees and the move will hurt sales and marketing teams the most.

The report also mentioned that the marketing executives are on third-party payrolls of the companies such as Channelplay, Randstad, and more.

Earlier this year in January, the company fired around 5,000 people across verticals in a mass layoff. The company has also reportedly sacked many top executives, including senior vice presidents who were apparently taking big salaries (reported to be around Rs10 million).

Byju's sued by agent linked to $1.2 billion loan

A couple of days back, the company said that it filed a suit against investment management firm Redwood to challenge the acceleration of a $1.2 billion term loan B facility and disqualify the lender for its "predatory tactics".

Byju's said Redwood purchased a significant portion of the loan while primarily trading in distressed debt, which was contrary to the conditions of the term loan facility. The company filed the suit in the New York Supreme Court.

Byju's also issued a notice to Redwood entities disqualifying the investment firm as a lender with critical rights under the term loan norms once it takes effect, the company said in a statement.

"We had to take these measures following a series of predatory tactics by the lenders, led by Redwood," the startup said.

Bloomberg reported in May that Byju's Alpha was sued by an agent for lenders owed $1.2 billion after months of negotiations between creditors and the education technology firm.

The report added that Glas Trust Company and investor Timothy R. Pohl filed the action against Byju's Alpha, Tangible Play, Inc., and Riju Ravindran. Think and Learn Private, which is the ed-tech giant founded by Byju Raveendran, is suing the two firms. The regulatory filing noted that Ravindran is a director of Think and Learn.

Court filings have been redacted with details on why the complaint was brought and what does Glas Trust and Pohl want. The report mentioned that one filing suggests that the case may be in connection to a fight over the election of directors, although it does not include specific charges.

Before an anti-money laundering investigation began in April, Byju's was scrambling to please creditors on the refinancing of the loan.

India's edtech giant Byju's to lay off 1,000 more employees: Report

A residential building in Russia's southern city of Voronezh was hit by a drone on Friday (June 9), the local governor said. Alexander Gusev, who is the governor of the region, said on Telegram: "A drone fell on Belinsky Street in Voronezh." Gusev said that three people were hurt by shards of broken glass.

News agencies reported and photos posted on social media showed damage and scorch marks to the facade of the apartment block.

Gusev said the three people had received medical attention on the spot and declined hospital treatment, suggesting their injuries were light.

Ukraine has claimed that it is preparing for a counteroffensive. A report also emerged in The Washington Post on Thursday that the long-awaited counteroffensive has started, but Kyiv later denied it.

In recent times, drone attacks have hit Russian cities, including Moscow. But this is the first such incident in Voronezh, a city of around one million people. It lies in the next region deeper into Russia than Belgorod, which has been heavily shelled by Ukraine.

The governor said that at least two people were injured in the attack, some 200 kilometres from the Ukraine border. Belinsky Street, where the drone fell, is in the centre of the city, near Voronezh State University.

Russian state media showed images of a building that had some shattered windows and part of its wall was blackened, where the drone had apparently hit.

Gusev said Russia's FSB security service and emergency services were working near the building and promised help for residents.

In the aftermath, the Kremlin said that Russia's intelligence services were investigating a drone attack on the Russian city of Voronezh, which it blamed on Ukraine.

Peskov said, "We saw reports that it was shot down, and that it was a drone that had already been shot down. The details are being clarified, intelligence services are working on this."

Top 10 Most Expensive Cities. Four Of Them Are in Asia

A critical global financial hub of the United States, New York tops the list, having experienced a rise in inflation rates and cost of living as compared to other cities in the country.

The second spot is taken by Hong Kong, which remains among the top-most expensive cities. Although it has fallen in the ranking like most cities in the area, its inflation and cost of living still soar high.

Geneva ranks as the third-most expensive and most expensive location in Europe for expatriates. It is comparatively costlier when compared to most countries in terms of cost of living, food, transportation, and other essentials.

Prices in London have risen considerably with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, making it the fourth-most expensive city to live in. Rent, cooking oil, and petroleum prices are peaking, contributing to inflation.

Singapore has climbed to the fifth spot. According to reports, it has the highest transportation prices in the world. It is also among the most expensive places for alcohol, tobacco, and clothing.

With high accommodation, transportation, and food costs, Zurich has become a challenging place for expatriates. Prices of necessities like fruits and vegetables are considerably higher in Switzerland than in most countries.

Although the city of San Francisco is known for its innovation and charm, the cost of living in the city makes it hard for people to live here. It is mainly due to the higher demand for land compared to limited land availability.

The Mediterranean metropolis Tel Aviv ranks eighth on the list. The city is one of the most expensive for buying alcohol, groceries, cars, fuel, and other items.

Another Asian city, Seoul has also made it to the list. The country itself is costly to live in, however, the housing prices in Seoul push it to the top ranks.

The fourth-most expensive in Asia, and tenth in the world, Tokyo, is one the most pricey cities to live in. Being a developed island country, Japan’s economy is difficult to engage with other countries. Tokyo is comparatively more expensive as it is a metropolis.

ECA International has released the Cost of Living list for 2023.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reportedly passed a secret order to ban suicide in the country, labelling it as a "treason against socialism". A report by Radio Free Asia claimed that Kim has ordered local governments to take preventative measures.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reportedly passed a secret order to ban suicide in the country, labelling it as a "treason against socialism". A report by Radio Free Asia claimed that Kim has ordered local governments to take preventative measures. A government official told the outlet that the decision was made after data showed an increase in people taking their lives this year. As mentioned in the report, the South Korean National Intelligence Service claimed that suicides were up by about 40% compared to last year at the end of May. However, there's no confirmation of the data from North Korean authorities. As quoted, a spokesperson for South Korea's National Intelligence Service said: "There are a lot of internal unrest factors in North Korea due to people’s hardships." The spy agency apparently also mentioned that violent crimes are also on the rise in North Korea as people struggle to make ends meet. The official spoke to the outlet on condition of anonymity because of security reasons. As quoted, he said, "Our meeting was held at the provincial party committee's building located in Pohang district, in the city of Chongjin." "The large number of suicide cases in the province was revealed and some officials … could not hide their anxious expressions," the official added. The official further added that most of the cases involved whole families ending their lives together. He said, "[The attendees] were shocked by the disclosure of suicide notes that criticised the country and the social system." Has Kim Jong-un issued secret order to ban suicide in North Korea?

A crocodile in Costa Rica has made herself pregnant, which is said to be the first recorded instance of a "virgin birth" in the reptile species as scientists have found evidence that female crocodiles can lay eggs without mating. Virgin birth is known as facultative parthenogenesis and it has been documented in fish, lizards and snakes, but this is the first case in crocodiles.

The study mentioned that the mentioned crocodile was kept in captivity in a zoo and had no contact with males. In fact, the crocodile had no contact with males for about 16 years. However, a fully-formed foetus was discovered inside one of her eggs. The foetus was 99.9 per cent genetically identical to the mother.

The study published in Biology Letters — titled "Discovery of facultative parthenogenesis in a new world crocodile" — said that the female crocodile used a strange reproductive strategy, a method which may have its evolutionary roots in the age of the dinosaurs.

"[T]his discovery offers tantalizing insights into the possible reproductive capabilities of the extinct archosaurian relatives of crocodilians and birds, notably members of Pterosauria and Dinosauria," writes the team of researchers led by evolutionary biologist Warren Booth from Virginia Tech.

Part of the study read the ability of sexually reproducing species to generate offspring without the genetic contributions of males was once considered rare.

But it has been documented across multiple vertebrate lineages, including both avian and non-avian reptiles, and elasmobranch fishes, with notable examples in sharks, rays and sawfish.

The researchers from Virginia Tech have analysed the foetus. The researchers specialise in parthenogenesis and they published their findings in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

As quoted by Sky News, they said that the discovery suggests virgin births could be happening in crocodiles without anyone realising it.

"It is not uncommon for captive reptiles to lay clutches of eggs, given the period of isolation from mates, these would normally be considered non-viable and discarded. These findings, therefore, suggest that eggs should be assessed for potential viability when males are absent," they said.

"Furthermore, given that (virgin births) can occur in the presence of potential mates, instances of this may be missed when reproduction occurs in females co-habited with males," they added.

The study found that "genome-wide maternal heterozygosity was 0.349, compared to 0.045 for the offspring, demonstrating a significant reduction in heterozygosity in the offspring when compared to the mother".

"Regardless of the dataset evaluated, the offspring retained approximately 3% of the maternal heterozygosity (table 1), supporting FP through terminal fusion automixis as the mode of reproduction," it added.

Screams, screams, screams and scary darkness... the last moments inside of the train that met with terrible fate in the east Indian state of Odisha last week portray a painful picture of what people experienced. The video was shared on social media platforms.

India was left grieving after a shocking train accident killed at least 261 people in the nation's worst rail accident in over two decades. On Friday (June 2), a passenger train hit a parked freight train in the district of Balasore in Odisha.

It was a three-way collision which occurred around 7:00 pm (local time), involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and a goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanagar in Odisha's Balasore district. The Howrah Superfast Express from Bengaluru to Howrah in West Bengal collided with the Coromandel Express from Kolkata to Chennai.

The video shared by local media claims to show the exact moment when Coromandel Express crashed with the other train. A member of the cleaning department can be seen mopping the floor in the first few seconds of the video, but after the impact, lights go out and people can be heard screaming.
